Complementing its primary role in motor control, cerebellar learning has also a bottom-up influence on cognitive functions, where high-level representations build up from elementary sensorimotor memories. In this paper we examine the cerebellar contribution to both procedural and declarative components of spatial cognition. To do so, we model a functional interplay between the cerebellum and the hippocampal formation during goal-oriented navigation. We reinterpret and complete existing genetic behavioural observations by means of quantitative accounts that cross-link synaptic plasticity mechanisms, single cell and population coding properties, and behavioural responses. In contrast to earlier hypotheses positing only a purely procedural impact of cerebellar adaptation deficits, our results suggest a cerebellar involvement in high-level aspects of behaviour. In particular, we propose that cerebellar learning mechanisms may influence hippocampal place fields, by contributing to the path integration process. Our simulations predict differences in place-cell discharge properties between normal mice and L7-PKCI mutant mice lacking long-term depression at cerebellar parallel fibre-Purkinje cell synapses. On the behavioural level, these results suggest that, by influencing the accuracy of hippocampal spatial codes, cerebellar deficits may impact the exploration-exploitation balance during spatial navigation.  相似文献

It was examined whether stimulus modality (auditory vs. visual) affects the retrieval of subjective duration from memory. In two experiments the temporal generalization paradigm was used. Participants had to decide whether the previously learned standard duration (400 ms) occurred in the context of comparison stimuli. Two major results were found. (1) Discrimination was more accurate if the training and testing stimuli were of the same modality than if they were of opposite modalities. (2) If both modality of learning and modality of testing were different, subjects systematically underestimated the test durations, i.e. temporal generalization gradients (the proportion of identifications of a stimulus as the standard, plotted against stimulus duration) shifted to the right. The observed shift is interpreted as a result of a delayed timing process.  相似文献

The Preferences Scale (PS) is a new measure of morningness and therefore requires intensive investigation to establish its measurement properties and validity. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of Smith and colleagues (2002) posited model structure was not optimal in both a student (n = 731) and working sample (n = 218). However, significant differences (p < 0.01) were found for times to sleep and wake between morning and evening types. Principal components and reliability analyses were used to develop a 6-item model comprising 2 factors using a student sample (n = 368). Cronbach's alpha for the PS was 0.73 and the factors explained 61% of the variance. The revised model was replicated via CFA in a separate student sample (n = 363). A subsequent CFA confirmed the model structure in the working sample. Cronbach's alpha was 0.74 and the factors explained 64% of the variance. Significant differences (p < 0.01) in self-reported alertness ratings between morning and evening types were obtained by time-of-day. These results provide preliminary support for the PS. The predictive efficacy of the PS requires further validation against a number of health and work-related variables.  相似文献

Most phylogenetic comparative methods used for testing adaptive hypotheses make evolutionary assumptions that are not compatible with evolution toward an optimal state. As a consequence they do not correct for maladaptation. The "evolutionary regression" that is returned is more shallow than the optimal relationship between the trait and environment. We show how both evolutionary and optimal regressions, as well as phylogenetic inertia, can be estimated jointly by a comparative method built around an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model of adaptive evolution. The method considers a single trait adapting to an optimum that is influenced by one or more continuous, randomly changing predictor variables.  相似文献

The memory T cell pool is characterized by a substantial degree of heterogeneity in phenotype and function as well as anatomical distribution, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study we confirm that the memory CD4(+) T cell pool in wild-type and TCR-transgenic mice consists of heterogeneous subsets, as defined by surface marker expression or cytokine production. Extralymphoid sites contain significant numbers of memory CD4(+) T cells, which are phenotypically and functionally distinct from their lymphoid counterparts. However, we show in this study that the phenotype of lymphoid and extralymphoid memory T cells is not stable. Instead, the unique properties of extralymphoid memory T cells are acquired upon migration into extralymphoid sites and are lost when memory T cells migrate back into lymphoid organs. Thus, at least some of the extralymphoid properties may represent a transient activation state that can be adopted by T cells belonging to a single memory T cell pool. Furthermore, such intermittent activation during or after migration into extralymphoid sites could provide an important signal, promoting the survival and functional competence of memory T cells in the absence of Ag.  相似文献

Background

We study the adaptation of Link Grammar Parser to the biomedical sublanguage with a focus on domain terms not found in a general parser lexicon. Using two biomedical corpora, we implement and evaluate three approaches to addressing unknown words: automatic lexicon expansion, the use of morphological clues, and disambiguation using a part-of-speech tagger. We evaluate each approach separately for its effect on parsing performance and consider combinations of these approaches.

Results

In addition to a 45% increase in parsing efficiency, we find that the best approach, incorporating information from a domain part-of-speech tagger, offers a statistically significant 10% relative decrease in error.

Conclusion

When available, a high-quality domain part-of-speech tagger is the best solution to unknown word issues in the domain adaptation of a general parser. In the absence of such a resource, surface clues can provide remarkably good coverage and performance when tuned to the domain. The adapted parser is available under an open-source license.

Little research has been undertaken to evaluate whether environmental factors other than bright light influence the individuals ability to initiate and maintain sleep. In the present analyses, nine meteorologic variables were evaluated for their possible relationship to self-reported sleep continuity in a sample of 43 subjects over a period of 105 days. In this preliminary analysis, high barometric pressure, low precipitation, and lower temperatures were significantly correlated with good sleep continuity. Interestingly, ambient light and lunar phase were not found to be strongly associated sleep diary measures.  相似文献

A long-handled, double-headed garden rake was used to collect submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) and compared to in-boat visual inspection to record species presence at 67 individual sites. Six rake subsamples were taken at each site and a rake density rating was given to each species collected in the subsamples. Presence at the site, frequency of occurrence in the six rake samples, and additive density rating (the sum of the six rake density ratings) were quantified for each species at each site. The validity of the indices was tested against biomass data collected by clipping all remaining vegetation from the 67 sites. In the turbid water of the Mississippi River, visual inspection of SAV from boats was ineffective with only 27% of the species detected, while raking retrieved on average 70% of the total number of submersed species in the 67 sites. Presence of species at individual sites was correlated with biomass from Stuckenia pectinata, while frequency of occurrence and additive density rating were correlated with biomass for species with greater than 21 g of total biomass from all sites. The efficiency of the rake to collect biomass varied among species; only 18% of total biomass was captured via raking the site six times. Additive density rating as an index of abundance can be used to detect temporal changes in the same water body; however, cross-species comparison is not encouraged unless the efficiency of the rake has been determined for each species being compared.  相似文献

Users' fatigue is the biggest technological hurdle facing Interactive Evolutionary Computation (IEC). This paper introduces the idea of "absolute scale" and "neighbour scale" to improve the performance of predicting users' subjective evaluation characteristics in IEC, and thus it will accelerate EC convergence and reduce users' fatigue. We experimentally evaluate the effect of the proposed method using two benchmark functions. The experimental results show that the convergence speed of IEC using the proposed predictor, which learns from absolute evaluation data, is much faster than the conventional one, which learns from relative data, especially in early generations. Also, IEC with predictors that use recent data are more effective than those which use all past data.  相似文献

The Depression List is a Dutch self-report measure of depressive symptoms in persons with dementia. Fifteen items differ to the extent that they provide reliable measurements of latent constructs such as feeling depressed, tired or lonely. Item scalability and construct reliability were studied by administering the questionnaire to 599 consecutive visitors of a psychogeriatric day care department. Using confirmatory factor analysis three competing hypothetical models were tested for model fit. A four-factor model composed of latent constructs for feeling depressed, tired, lonesome and appetite or sleep disturbance provided an adequate fit to the clinical data, which did not apply to a two-factor model (distinguishing a construct of loneliness from a more general mood construct) and a one-factor model, that hypothesized a single general mood construct for all fifteen items. Nine items carried relatively small proportions of error variance. These reliable items were selected for the construction of three scales that satisfied the assumptions of Mokken's criteria for homogeneity. The resulting measures of feeling depressed, tired or lonely showed evidence of convergent validity for a latent affective construct. The affective measures were not associated with severity of cognitive impairment (discriminant validity). The three scales allow a reliable measurement of differences in affective function in cognitively impaired subjects.  相似文献

Sexually dimorphic characteristics in men may act as cues, advertising long-term health, dominance, and reproductive potential to prospective mates. Evolution has accordingly adapted human cognition so that women perceive sexually dimorphic facial features as important when judging the attractiveness and suitability of potential mates. Here we provide evidence showing, for the first time, that women's memory for details encountered in recently experienced episodes is also systematically biased by the presence of men's facial cues signaling enhanced or reduced sexual dimorphism. Importantly, the direction and strength of this bias are predicted by individual differences in women's preferences for masculine versus feminine facial features in men and are triggered specifically while viewing images of male but not female faces. No analogous effects were observed in male participants viewing images of feminized and masculinized women's faces despite the fact that male participants showed strong preferences for feminized facial features. These findings reveal a preference-dependent memory enhancement in women that would promote retention of information from encounters with preferred potential mates. We propose that women's memory for recently experienced episodes may therefore be functionally specialized for mate choice and in particular for the comparative evaluation of alternative potential mates. This also raises the possibility that similar specialization may be present in other species where it has been established that precursor, ‘episodic-like’ forms of memory exist.  相似文献

The evaluation of the ELISA technique has been studied in the special case of its application to the serological diagnosis of chlamydiosis in goats. The results showed that this technique is reliable (accurate and reproducible) and efficient. Sera from 96 goats were studied with the ELISA technique, indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and complement fixation (CF), the latter being the standard method in France. A comparison of the results revealed a similarity of findings with ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence and the greater sensitivity of the ELISA technique relative to that of complement fixation.  相似文献

生态城市是依据生态学原理提出的一类社会-经济-自然协调发展的城市。目前生态城市理论研究主要应用在城市的规划、设计和管理上。生态城市建设的评价是衡量生态城市规划、建设、管理成效的主要依据。在对生态城市理论和内涵详细分析的基础上,采用专家咨询的定性和定量信息构建了扬州生态城市评价指标体系,该指标体系包括了城市复合生态系统中社会、经济、自然3个子系统,反映生态城市的内涵和衡量生态城市各子系统的状态、动态和实力。为对各级指标进行综合,提出了全排列多边形图示指标评价方法,评价生态城市在各个规划时段的建设成效。评价结果表明,扬州生态城市的综合发展能力市在2005规划年将达到0.44,在2010规划年将达到0.64,在2020规划年将达到0.85。评价方法简单直观,代数计算结果考虑了各级指标临界值对综合指标的放大和紧缩效应,反映了整体大于或者小于部分之和的系统整合原理。  相似文献
