Adult female Bennett's wallabies (N = 6) were maintained in artificial winter solstitial daylengths commencing 3 weeks before the winter solstice for 16 or 42 weeks. Such treatment effectively prevented the normal establishment of seasonal reproductive quiescence with animals continuing to exhibit reproductive cycles beyond the time of the normal termination of the breeding season. Animals maintained in natural photoperiods or simulated natural changes in daylength after the winter solstice all entered reproductive quiescence by early February. In the Bennett's wallaby, therefore, the breeding season does not terminate as a result of refractoriness to short daylengths. Our results indicate that the relatively small increases in photoperiod shortly after the winter solstice provide the environmental signal responsible for initiating the onset of seasonal reproductive quiescence which normally occurs 5-8 weeks after the solstice. These results contrast with the effect of fixed artificial summer solstitial daylengths on the onset of the breeding season in which breeding begins spontaneously at the normal time of year as a result of long-day photorefractoriness.  相似文献

The duration of nocturnal pineal melatonin secretion transduces effects of day length (DL) on the neuroendocrine axis of photoperiodic rodents. Long DLs support reproduction, and short DLs induce testicular regression, followed several months later by spontaneous recrudescence; gonadal regrowth is thought to reflect development of tissue refractoriness to melatonin. In most photoperiodic species, pinealectomy does not diminish reproductive competence in long DLs. Turkish hamsters (Mesocricetus brandti) deviate from this norm: elimination of melatonin secretion in long-day males by pinealectomy or constant light treatment induces testicular regression and subsequently recrudescence; the time course of these gonadal transitions is similar to that observed in males transferred from long to short DLs. In the present study, long-day Turkish hamsters that underwent testicular regression and recrudescence in constant light subsequently were completely unresponsive to the antigonadal effects of short DLs. Other hamsters that manifested testicular regression and recrudescence in short DLs were unresponsive to the antigonadal effects of pinealectomy or constant light. Long-term suppression of melatonin secretion induces a physiological state in Turkish hamsters similar or identical to the neuroendocrine refractoriness produced by short-day melatonin signals (i.e., neural refractoriness to melatonin develops in the absence of circulating melatonin secretion). A melatonin-independent interval timer, which would remain operative in the absence of melatonin during hibernation, may determine the onset of testicular recrudescence in the spring. In this respect, Turkish hamsters differ from most other photoperiodic rodents.  相似文献

In many forest passerine bird species, rapid climate warming has led to a phenological mismatch between the period of maximum nestlings' food requirements and the period of maximum food availability (seasonal caterpillar biomass peak) due to an insufficient advancement of the birds' laying dates. The initiation of laying is preceded by the development of the gonads, which in birds are regressed outside the breeding season. Increasing day length in late winter and early spring triggers a cascade of hormones which induces gonadal development. Since day length is not altered by climate change, one potential restriction to advancing laying date is the seasonal timing of gonadal development. To assess the importance of gonadal growth for timing of reproduction we experimentally manipulated the timing of gonadal development. We show that the growth of the largest follicle of captive female great tits (Parus major) increased after being exposed to just a single long day in winter (20 hours of light followed by 4 hours darkness). We then photostimulated wild female great tits from two study areas in a field experiment in spring for a single day and determined their laying date. These populations differed in the availability of food allowing us to test if food availability in combination with photostimulation affected egg laying dates. Despite an expected difference in the onset of gonadal growth, laying dates of photostimulated females did not differ from control females in both populations. These results suggest that wild great tits are not restricted in the advancement of their laying date by limited gonadal development.  相似文献

Testis size, bill colour and moult were monitored in male House Sparrows Passer domesticus kept under a natural daylength regime between February and November. On three occasions (at the summer solstice, 25 days later and 39 days later), groups of birds were transferred to a daylength of 18 h of light and 6 h of darkness per day (18L: 6D), the natural daylength at the solstice. In birds under natural daylengths, the testes had regressed significantly by 2 5 days after the solstice. In those transferred to 18L:6D at the solstice, the onset of regression was delayed by about 4 weeks. Transfer to 18L: 6D after the solstice did not cause recrudescence; the testes continued to regress. In birds transferred to 18L: 6D at the solstice, moult was delayed by 4 weeks and progressed more slowly. These results suggest that photoperiodically induced gonadal regression in this species contains elements characteristic of both absolute and relative photorefractoriness.  相似文献

The avian reproductive cycle is integrated and timed by a variety of environmental factors that include day length, availability of food, nest sites, presence of a mate, etc. However, reproduction can be delayed or disrupted by inclement weather and, until recently, the endocrine responses of avian species to storms were entirely unknown. This communication describes changes in endocrine state in free-living male Song sparrows, Melospiza melodia, during gonadal recrudescence after a severe winter, and in response to storms in early spring and summer. Both the severe winter weather and an early spring snow storm delayed testicular development, and depressed circulating levels of testosterone. The sparrows did not appear to be stressed, however, since body mass and fat deposits were higher than in birds sampled during the previous spring after a less severe winter.
A second storm occurred in late May and early June when Song sparrows were feeding young. Curiously, plasma levels of testosterone were not affected, but the sparrows did appear to be stressed since there was a significant decline in body mass, and a marked increase in circulating levels of corticosterone. These data suggest that the effects of inclement weather on reproductive function can vary in relation to the stage in the reproductive cycle when the storm strikes, and that the endocrine mechanisms underlying acclimatization to severe meteorological conditions are also different.  相似文献

Prolonged and severe periods of inclement weather can retard gonadal development in early spring or disrupt the breeding cycle in summer. Previous investigations on the endocrine responses of free-living avian species to storms have been restricted almost entirely to males. This communication presents the endocrine responses of free-living female Song sparrows, Melospiza melodia, during gonadal recrudescence after a severe winter, and during storms in early spring and summer. As in males, gonadal recrudescence was delayed by the severe winter weather, and this effect was exacerbated by an aseasonal snow storm in early spring. Unlike males, female Song sparrows did appear to be stressed by this snow storm, since body mass and fat deposit decreased, and plasma levels of corticosterone increased. A second storm in early summer did not, however, prove to be stressful to females, although males were apparently stressed by the same storm. At the time the early summer storm occurred, young had been fledged and were being fed mostly by the male. Females begin preparing for a second clutch of eggs and do not feed fledglings to the same extent as males. Thus it is possible that males are stressed by storms at this time, because they are feeding several young as well as themselves during a period of reduced availability of food, whereas females are feeding themselves only. These data suggest that, not only do the endocrine responses to inclement weather vary in relation to stage in the reproductive cycle when storms strike, but also that there are sex differences in those responses.  相似文献

Short day lengths induce testicular regression in seasonally breeding Syrian hamsters. To test whether the ventromedial hypothalamus is necessary to maintain reproductive quiescence once testicular regression has been achieved, photoregressed male hamsters were subjected to lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMHx), pinealectomy (Pinx), or sham operation (Sham). VMHx hamsters underwent accelerated gonadal recrudescence compared to Pinx and Sham hamsters. Recovery of prolactin concentrations (PRL) to values characteristic of long-day hamsters was hastened in the VMHx animals compared to Sham hamsters. Concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) increased prematurely in both the VMHx and Pinx animals, beginning a few weeks after surgery. By the time the gonads had undergone recrudescence and the hamsters were refractory to melatonin, PRL and FSH concentrations had returned to baseline long-day values in all groups; there was no evidence of hypersecretion of either hormone in any of the animals with lesions. Melatonin concentrations of VMHx hamsters did not differ from those of sham-operated animals, but because only a single determination was made, it remains possible that VMH damage altered the duration of nightly melatonin secretion. An intact VMH appears to be essential for the continued maintenance of reproductive suppression induced by exposure to short day lengths; these and earlier findings suggest that the VMH-dorsomedial hypothalamic complex mediates regression of the reproductive apparatus during decreasing day lengths of late summer and early autumn and also is necessary to sustain regression during the winter months.  相似文献

Photoperiodism research has relied on static day lengths and abrupt transitions between long and short days to characterize the signals that drive seasonal rhythms. To identify ecologically relevant critical day lengths and to test the extent to which naturally changing day lengths synchronize important developmental events, we monitored nine cohorts of male Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) born every 2 wk from 4 wk before to 12 wk after the summer solstice in a simulated natural photoperiod (SNP). SNP hamsters born from 4 wk before to 2 wk after the solstice underwent rapid somatic and gonadal growth; among those born 4-6 wk after the solstice, some delayed puberty by many weeks, whereas others manifested early puberty. Hamsters born eight or more weeks after the solstice failed to undergo early testicular development. The transition to delayed development occurred at long day lengths, which induce early puberty when presented as static photoperiods. The first animals to delay puberty may do so predominantly on the basis of postnatal decreases in day length, whereas in later cohorts, a comparison of postnatal day length to gestational day length may contribute to arrested development. Despite differences in timing of birth and timing of puberty, autumn gonadal regression and spring gonadal and somatic growth occurred at similar calendar dates in all cohorts. Incrementally changing photoperiods exert a strong organizing effect on seasonal rhythms by providing hamsters with a richer source of environmental timing cues than are available in simple static day lengths.  相似文献

In Syrian hamsters, exposure to short photoperiods or constant darkness induces a decrease in gonadotrophin secretion and gonadal regression. After 10-12 weeks, animals undergo spontaneous gonadal reactivation, gonadotrophin concentrations rise, and in males, testes size increases and spermatogenesis resumes. The tau mutation shortens the period of circadian wheel-running activity by 4 h in the homozygote. Here, we examine the impact of this mutation on the reproductive response to photoperiod change. Seventeen adult tau mutant and nine adult wild-type males were housed in complete darkness for 25 weeks and testes size determined at weekly intervals. Gonadal regression and subsequent recrudescence occurred in both groups of animals. Regression occurred more rapidly in tau mutants, with a nadir significantly earlier than wild-types but after a similar number of circadian cycles. Rates of testicular recrudescence were similar in both groups. Our data suggest that an acceleration of the circadian period increases the rate of reproductive inhibition in animals exposed to inhibitory photoperiods. Once initiated, the rate of spontaneous reactivation may be independent of the circadian axis.  相似文献

The feeding range and flock structure of Rooks showed temporal variations caused mainly by the dispersion of food and reproductive behaviour.
Feeding range was restricted in spring, autumn and early winter when food availability was high and Rooks were reproductively active. A large feeding range occurred in late summer and late winter, when food availability was either generally low or locally distributed and when Rooks were reproductively inactive. The occurrence of flocks common to several rookeries mirrored variations in feeding range; mixed rookery flocks were more common in late summer and late winter. Similarly, the size of the rookery (as measured by the number of nests) was related to feeding range only when Rooks were reproductively inactive and at such times larger rookeries had greater feeding ranges.
Flock structure showed similar seasonal variations; small widely spaced flocks predominated in summer, autumn, early winter and spring, whereas large dense flocks occurred in late winter. Diurnal variations in flock structure occurred within any one season. Both seasonal and diurnal variations in flock structure may be determined by the dispersion of the prey and the feeding strategy used to obtain it, reproductive behaviour and the risk of predation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In Portugal, the European clam (Ruditapes decussatus) is an important commercial resource. Óbidos Lagoon is a strong candidate as a cultivation area to increase European clam exploitation. However, the reproductive biology of this population has not been described. In this work, the reproductive cycle of R. decussatus was characterized by determining gonadal development stages, gonad index, condition index, and biochemical composition. The relationship between reproduction and environmental parameters (sea surface temperature, chlorophyll a, and particulate organic matter) was assessed. Ruditapes decussatus had an annual reproductive cycle. The gametogenic cycle started in late winter, and the ripe stage in spring was followed by spawning that began at the end of spring/early summer and extended until early autumn. The subsequent period of sexual rest occurred during the winter. Condition index showed seasonal variations related to food availability (chlorophyll a). The European clams in Óbidos Lagoon recovered rapidly after their reproductive period, most likely owing to the availability of food. This study will help to improve sustainable management of this wild stock and is important for future aquaculture development of this species.  相似文献

Short days inhibit reproduction and enhance immune function in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). Their reproductive inhibition is sustained by an endogenous timing mechanism: after ca. 20 weeks in short days, reproductive photorefractoriness develops, followed by spontaneous recrudescence of the reproductive system. It is unknown whether analogous seasonal timing mechanisms regulate their immune function or whether enhanced immune function is sustained indefinitely under short days. In order to test this hypothesis, we housed adult male deer mice under long (16 h light day(-1)) or short (8 h light day(-1)) day conditions for 32 weeks or under long day conditions for 20 weeks followed by 12 weeks of short days. Mice under the long day conditions remained photostimulated over the 32 weeks, whereas mice housed under the short day conditions exhibited gonadal regression followed by photorefractoriness and spontaneous recrudescence. Mice transferred to short days at week 20 were reproductively photoregressed at week 32. Total splenocytes, relative splenic mass and mitogen-activated splenocyte proliferation were greater in those mice transferred to short days at week 20 than in those mice housed under either long or short day conditions for 32 consecutive weeks, and immune function in mice exposed to short days for 32 weeks was comparable with that of long day animals. These data suggest that short day enhancement of immune function is not indefinite. With prolonged (< or = 32 weeks) exposure to short days, several measures of immune function exhibit "spontaneous" regression, restoring long day-like immunocompetence. The results suggest that formal similarities and, possibly, common substrates exist among the photoperiodic timekeeping mechanisms that regulate seasonal transitions in reproductive and immune function.  相似文献

Siberian hamsters are photoperiodic seasonally breeding rodents. To date, there has been no evidence that Siberian hamsters exhibit an annual rhythm in reproductive, thermoregulatory, molt, or body mass changes. However, given that the termination of their winter cycle is under endogenous control, the authors thought it possible that under particular conditions, other aspects of their seasonal cycle may be endogenously mediated. Consequently, the authors monitored the reproductive condition, body mass, and molt of hamsters chronically exposed to short days (LD 9:15) for up to 2 years. All animals were taken from previous experiments and had exhibited gonadal regression, followed by refractoriness to shorts days and spontaneous gonadal growth, as well as a complete cycle of body mass and molt changes. Although some hamsters died during the study, the authors continued to monitor some animals for up to 106 weeks of short-day exposure. Of the 57 animals monitored, 4 (7.02%) exhibited a second cycle of reproductive regression and recrudescence. Furthermore, the timing of the second regression was similar in the 4 animals, occurring about 1 year after the initial short-day exposure (50.5 +/- 1.71 weeks). However, the timing of the second bout of recrudescence was more variable, occurring at about week 80 (79.5 +/- 8.01 weeks). Hamsters exhibited regressed gonads for about 7 months (29.0 +/- 8.02 weeks). Although the body mass of the 4 hamsters declined at the time of the second cycle of gonadal regression, it never recovered. No hamster exhibited a second molt cycle. These observations indicate that a small percentage of Siberian hamsters chronically exposed to short days can exhibit an annual cycle of reproduction.  相似文献

Long days stimulate and short days (SDs) inhibit the reproductive axis of photoperiodic rodents. In long-day Turkish hamsters, unlike most other rodents, elimination of pineal melatonin secretion by constant light or pinealectomy initiates a cycle of gonadal involution and recrudescence outwardly similar to that induced by short days. The present study assessed whether short days and constant light induce the seasonal reproductive cycle via common or different interval timing mechanisms. Male hamsters that had undergone gonadal involution in SDs for 8 or 14 weeks were treated with LL for 14 and 8 weeks, respectively. If SDs and LL act via independent mechanisms, then gonadal quiescence of SD-regressed males, which normally lasts 10 weeks, might be extended by LL treatment; alternatively, if SDs and LL act on the same timer, or the timer cannot be retriggered, then LL will not extend the duration of reproductive quiescence. Neither of these outcomes materialized. Instead, male hamsters exposed to LL while reproductively quiescent exhibited accelerated gonadal recrudescence. Extended LL treatment did not restore responsiveness to SDs in photorefractory hamsters. In Turkish hamsters, photoperiodic history determines whether constant light inhibits or stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis.  相似文献

Gonads of brahminy myna (Sturnus pagodarum) spontaneously regress in July/August when the daylength is still stimulatory. Experiments were conducted to investigate if photoperiod was involved in the timing of gonadal regression and if photorefractoriness terminated the breeding season in this species. The observations obtained in the present study clearly show that: i) increasing photoperiods of spring/summer programmed for eventual gonadal regression in the late summer; ii) the birds developed photorefractoriness to all stimulatory daylengths and consequently the breeding season could not be extended by providing more stimulatory photoperiods; and iii) exposure to short daylength treatment failed to overcome the onset of refractoriness in birds after they had attained full gonadal growth and development. These results suggest that refractoriness is a process used by the brahminy myna to terminate the breeding season, and that this species becomes totally photorefractory.  相似文献

Summer and fall decreases in day length induce reproductive regression in adult hamsters and delay reproductive maturation of their young. The following year pubertal development is triggered by an interval timer (IT) that renders animals refractory to inhibitory short day lengths after approximately 25 wk. Timing of gonadal and somatic development was examined among offspring born to Siberian hamsters in early-August vs. late-September day lengths. Pubertal maturation was delayed in both groups until late winter. Gonadal growth occurred at significantly later ages among August- vs. September-born males as did late-winter spurts in ponderal growth of both sexes. Timing of reproductive and somatic development depended on postnatal rather than prenatal photoperiod exposure and was unrelated to the circadian entrainment status of dams. When developmental patterns were assessed in relation to time of year, group differences were largely eliminated. Because the IT triggers these developmental events, its duration must be plastic. This plasticity facilitates a relative synchronization or entrainment of developmental milestones in hamsters born into different late-summer/early-fall photoperiods.  相似文献

The baya weaver Ploceus philippinus, despite its purely tropical origin and tropical/subtropical distribution, exhibits all features of a typically photoperiodic species. The onset of reproduction in this species is triggered by increasing daylength and breeding is terminated by the development of distinct photorefractory phase. In order to ascertain the involvement of androgens in the development of photorefractoriness the long day response of birds was tested after a prior exposure to varied doses of testosterone. Testosterone treatment accelerated the onset of photorefractoriness as judged from the gonadal status, LH-dependent yellow plumage and testosterone-dependent beak pigmentation. While gonadal development and yellow plumage occurred in the control birds due to the stimulatory long photoperiod, the testosterone administered birds failed to show such developments. These findings indicate that testosterone might impair the higher photoresponding mechanisms resulting in the development of photorefractoriness.  相似文献

作者从1983年至1989年,在河北省三个不同的气候区,对农田中的黑线仓鼠(Cricetulus,bara-bensis)的食物与食量进行了调查。结果表明,黑线仓鼠主要取食农作物种子。同时取食草籽和根、茎、叶、花、果实及动物性食物。不同地区、不同作物地、不同季节和年度、不同性别鼠的食物差异显著。食物差异与鼠的种群繁值及数量动态有关。月夹捕率与颊囊中食物的总检出率和种子检出率正相关非常显著。直线回归方程式分别为y=38.388+2.866x n=60 r=0.343>r_(0.01)=0.325和y=29.734+2.669x r=0.394>r_(0.01360)=0.325。黑线仓鼠对食物的选择,主要受到食物质量的影响,同时也受到食物频度、作物的物候变化、动物的群落结构、种群密度、种内与种间竞争等多种因素的综合影响。在不同的时间和栖息地影响它食物选择的主要因素不同。日食量4-5g。  相似文献

The winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum), population off Newfoundland can include a 'non-reproductive post-mature' subset at any time together with 'reproductive' and 'immature' subsets. Skin samples were taken from male and female specimens from each subset in the winter, after reproductive flounder have normally undergone a pre-winter phase of gonadal recrudescence, and also during the spring prespawning period and in the summer following spawning. Results for immature flounder demonstrate that fish size influences epidermal thickness in this species. The epidermis of reproductive flounders is thick, representing a secondary sexual characteristic, during gonadal recrudescence. A thick epidermis is most pronounced on the blind-side, particularly in prespawning males. Although the epidermis of non-reproductive post-mature fish was thinner than in prespawning males and females, it was thicker than in immature flounders. Also, the epidermal thickness of non-reproductive post-mature individuals can still display some seasonal change although gonadal recrudescence has not been sustained. There is also a relationship between condition factor and epidermal thickness which is manifested particularly clearly in immature and non-reproductive post-mature flounder.  相似文献

Siberian hamsters transferred from a long (16 h light/day [16 L]) to an intermediate (13.5 L) day length (DL) undergo testicular regression within 2 months followed approximately 2 months later by "spontaneous" testicular recrudescence. Recovery of gonadal function after prolonged exposure to intermediate DLs is thought to reflect development of neuroendocrine refractoriness to intermediate-duration melatonin signals. The authors tested the alternative hypothesis that testicular recrudescence in 13.5 L occurs when the "memory" for the 16-L photoperiod fades and hamsters can no longer compare the 13.5-L to the prior 16-L day length. Adult hamsters transferred from 16 L to 13.5 L that underwent testicular involution were either maintained continuously in 13.5 L for 41 weeks or given a supplementary 2-week treatment of 16 L before being returned to 13.5 L. The supplementary treatment was administered either after hamsters had been in 13.5 L for 10 weeks and had involuted testes, or after 24 weeks, when the gonads had undergone recrudescence. The authors found that 16 L treatment administered at week 10 delayed final gonadal recrudescence by approximately 12 weeks; similar 16-L treatment at week 24 induced a second gonadal regression when animals were returned to 13.5 L. The most parsimonious hypothesis to account for these findings is that gonadal recrudescence in intermediate DLs reflects fading of the "memory" for prior long DLs rather than induction of refractoriness to melatonin signals generated in intermediate DLs.  相似文献
