Risks from electromagnetic devices are of considerable concern. Electrohypersensitive (EHS) persons attribute a variety of rather unspecific symptoms to exposure to electromagnetic fields. The pathophysiology of EHS is unknown and therapy remains a challenge. We hypothesized that some electrosensitive individuals are suffering from common somatic health problems. Toward this end we analysed clinical laboratory parameters including thyroid‐stimulating hormone (TSH), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), creatinine, hemoglobine, hematocrit and c‐reactive protein (CRP) in subjects suffering from EHS and in controls that are routinely used in clinical medicine to identify or screen for common somatic disorders. One hundred thirty‐two patients (n = 42 males and n = 90 females) and 101 controls (n = 34 males and n = 67 females) were recruited. Our results identified laboratory signs of thyroid dysfunction, liver dysfunction and chronic inflammatory processes in small but remarkable fractions of EHS sufferers as potential sources of symptoms that merit further investigation in future studies. In the cases of TSH and ALT/AST there were significant differences between cases and controls. The hypotheses of anaemia or kidney dysfunction playing a major role in EHS could be unambiguously refuted. Clinically it is recommended to check for signs of treatable somatic conditions when caring for individuals suffering from self‐proclaimed EHS. Background: Health‐related quality of life is important to assess and understand the impact of different diseases and conditions on individuals’ well‐being. Material and methods: Randomly selected 70‐year‐old individuals (N = 561) were included in this analysis. They were clinically examined and answered a questionnaire. Variables used were perceived oral health, satisfaction with appearance of teeth, problems with chewing and dry mouth, burning mouth syndrome, dental anxiety and dental visiting habits. To measure the participants′ perception of the impact of oral conditions on their well‐being, the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP‐14) was used. Results: The OHIP‐14 distribution of sum of scores showed a floor effect but revealed acceptable psychometric properties with regard to reliability and validity. Multivariable logistic regression revealed three highly predictive variables for individuals with high OHIP‐14 scores: using dentures, having chewing problems and being dissatisfied with appearance of teeth. Conclusion: Use of dentures, having chewing problems and being dissatisfied with appearance of teeth are associated with high OHIP‐14 sums, indicating strong influence on OHRQoL.  相似文献

Background: Oral Health Impact Profile for edentulous is an appropriate instrument for assessing the Quality of life (QOL) in edentulous patients. However, the reliability and validity of the Japanese version had not been evaluated. Methods: The study was conducted on 116 edentulous patients (Group A, requiring new dentures, n = 61; Group B, already having dentures, n = 55). Cronbach’s alpha (α) was used to measure internal consistency of the summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J and various subscales in Groups A and B. The interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and 95% confidence interval of the summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J and subscales were calculated. The summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J in Groups A and B were compared with evaluate content validity. The Spearman’s correlation coefficient between the summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J and the satisfaction with dentures (100 mm VAS) was calculated for Groups A and B to evaluate concurrent validity. Results: The reliability of the summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J was good (α = 0.93). The ICC of the summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J was 0.85. Summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J were significantly different (p = 0.027) between Group A and Group B, with Group A having the higher value. The Spearman’s correlation coefficient for the degree of satisfaction with dentures and the summary scores for OHIP‐EDENT‐J, calculated for Groups A and B (n = 107), was ?0.609. Conclusion: The OHIP‐EDENT‐J, a questionnaire on oral health–related QOL comprising 19 items, showed good reliability and validity for edentulous patients.  相似文献

Twenty‐seven individuals of Batrachospermum helminthosum Bory were collected from various sites in Japan, from temperate Iwate Prefecture to subtropical Okinawa Prefecture. The chloroplast‐encoded rbcL gene was sequenced from each sample. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using these and previously published sequences of 12 samples from North America. There were five haplotypes among the Japanese samples. Haplotype 1 was collected throughout a large geographical area corresponding to most of the sampling range in this study and was represented by most individuals (21 individuals). The other haplotypes were represented by one to three individuals, respectively. These distributions of haplotypes suggest the occurrence of one large metapopulation and/or recent colonization over a wide geographical area in Japan. Phylogenetic analysis showed two well‐supported clades within B. helminthosum, one clade containing four haplotypes (1–4) from Japan and the other clade comprising five North American haplotypes. Such differences between Japanese and North American haplotypes might be a result of continental drift and subsequent isolation in the Mesozoic era. The position of haplotype 5 from Okinawa in Japan is poorly resolved, but it is not closely related to the other four Japanese haplotypes. It is suggested that several taxonomic characteristics (sexuality, point of origin of carpogonium‐bearing branches, and trichogynes with or without basal knobs or branching) is not fixed genetically but is affected by environmental conditions. Based on the results of the present study, B. coerulescens Sirodot and B. elegans Sirodot should be placed in synonymy with B. helminthosum.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00609.x Translation and validation of the Hindi version of the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index Purpose: To translate the original English version of the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) into Hindi and assess its validity and reliability for use among people in India. Materials and Method: After translation into Hindi, a total of 385 participants aged 55+ demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability when used for people in India. Individual GOHAI items were recorded and summed as originally recommended. The questionnaire sought information about socio‐demographic characteristics and self‐reported perception of general and oral health. Clinical examination included assessment of periodontal status and number of decayed teeth, missing teeth, filled teeth and crowned teeth. Result: Mean GOHAI score was 40.9 (SD, 10.6; range, 12–60). Cronbach’s alpha for the GOHAI score was 0.88, indicating a high degree of internal consistency and homogeneity between the GOHAI items. The test–retest correlation coefficient for add‐GOHAI scores was 0.72, indicating good stability. Add‐GOHAI scores increased with poorer perceived general and oral health. Convergent validity, construct validity and discriminant validity of the GOHAI were demonstrated. Conclusion: It could therefore be used as a valuable instrument for measuring oral health–related quality of life for people in this region.  相似文献

Twenty‐two microsatellite DNA markers were developed for Japanese sea bass (Laterolabrax japonicus), of which 19 were independent from each other and at Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium across the three populations of Japanese sea bass inhabiting Chinese coasts (defined as China group) and the five populations inhabiting Japanese coasts (defined as Japan group). These 19 markers were used to determine the number of alleles and the expected heterozygosity across the eight populations. The majority of individuals (93.8–98.8%) of the three populations of the pre‐defined China group were assigned to an inferred cluster, and 90.9–94.6% of the individuals of the five populations of the pre‐defined Japan group were assigned to the other. The average number of alleles across the 19 loci was significantly lower in the China group than in the Japan group (10.3 vs 15.4), however, the average expected heterozygosity across the 19 loci of the China group was similar to that of the Japan group (0.743 vs 0.750). An effective population size reduction (i.e. bottleneck effect) was detected in the China group (P = 0.00357), which may have resulted from either over‐catching or glaciations or both. The pairwise FST among populations of the China group (0.019–0.029) and among populations of the Japan group (0.003–0.021) were lower than those between the populations of the China group and the populations of the Japan group (0.076–0.101). The average pair‐wise FST between the populations of the China group and those of the Japan group reached 0.075, and the variation between the China group and the Japan group accounted for 7.16% of the total. Nei’s original measures of genetic distances among the populations of the China group and the Japan group ranged from 0.123 to 0.145 and from 0.055 to 0.123, respectively, while that between the populations of the China group and the populations of the Japan group ranged from 0.326 to 0.450. Japanese sea bass is able to disperse over a long distance; however, our observations demonstrated that it cannot migrate across a possible barrier existing between Chinese and Japanese coasts. Most individuals of the Zhoushan population of the China group were assigned to two inferred clusters, and most individuals of Ariake Sea, Tokyo Bay and Ishikawa populations of the Japan group were assigned to three inferred clusters, indicating that these locations were the gathering grounds of Japanese sea bass.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00584.x Validity and reliability of the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) scale in the elderly population of Bosnia and Herzegovina Objectives: To adapt the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) index for elderly people in Bosnia and Herzegovina and test its validity, reliability and responsiveness to change. Background: Clinical measures alone may not be adequate for assessing the oral health of individuals. Subjective oral health indicators tested within a particular cultural context may not be relevant across cultures. Materials and methods: The study population comprised 231 free‐living adults aged 65 years or older. The OIDP was cross‐culturally adapted from English into the Serbian language and its psychometric properties were tested. Data were collected using a clinical examination and a questionnaire containing the OIDP. Results: In terms of reliability, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.82 and the intraclass correlation coefficient 0.88. The very high correlation of OIDP with self‐rated oral health (r = 0.78) verified criterion validity, while construct validity was demonstrated through its significant and graded associations with other subjective health measures. OIDP change scores on a treated subsample showed moderate effect size (0.59) and were associated with perceptions of oral health change, providing evidence for its responsiveness to change. Conclusion: The Bosnian version of the OIDP showed satisfactory validity, reliability and responsiveness to change confirming its appropriateness for use among older populations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  相似文献

The sleep, circadian rhythms, and mood (SCRAM) questionnaire (Byrne, Bullock et al., 2017) was designed to concurrently measure individual differences in three clinically important functions: diurnal preference, sleep quality, and mood. The 15-item questionnaire consists of three 5-item scales named Morningness, Good Sleep, and Depressed Mood. The overarching aim of the current project was to investigate the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. Here, we report on associations investigated in three data sets. Study 1 (= 70, 80% females) was used to examine the test–retest reliability of the questionnaire, finding strong test–retest reliability of the three scales over a 2-week period (r’s ranging from 0.73 to 0.86). Study 2 (= 183, 80% females) enabled us to examine the construct validity of the SCRAM scales against well-validated self-report measures of diurnal preference, sleep quality, and depression. Strong correlations were found between each SCRAM scale and their respective measure in bivariate analyses, and associations were robust after the inclusion of the remaining two SCRAM scales as predictors in regression analyses. Data from Study 3 (= 42, 100% males) were used to measure the extent to which SCRAM scores correlated with objective measures of sleep–wake behavior using actigraphy. Morningness was found to be related to earlier sleep onset and offset times, and Good Sleep was related to higher sleep efficiency but to no other measures of sleep quality; Depressed Mood was not related to actigraphy measures. The findings provide provisional support for construct validity and reliability of the SCRAM questionnaire as a measure of diurnal preference, sleep quality, and depressed mood. Future research into the psychometrics of SCRAM should test the questionnaire’s discriminant and predictive validity in clinical samples.  相似文献

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to use the oral health impact profile (OHIP‐14) to evaluate the impact of oral disease on the quality of life of a group of independently‐living elderly persons in an urban area of Japan. Subjects: A total of 1244 participants of the Senior Citizen's College, who attended the lectures once a week. They were community‐dwelling, independently‐living people over 60 years of age. Measurements: Japanese version of the short‐form OHIP‐14. Results: Internal reliability for the 14 items overall was very high (Cronbach's α = 0.95). Report of ‘painful aching’ and ‘uncomfortable to eat’ were the two most highly scored items using the mean sum OHIP‐14 score. A multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that the sum OHIP‐14 score had significant associations with self‐assessment of general health, dental status, and a perceived need for dental treatment. However, age, gender, dissatisfaction with financial status or education level was not significantly associated with the sum OHIP‐14. Compared with that of other countries, the items were ranked similarly, whereas the perceived magnitudes of the problems were quite different from other population. Conclusions: The OHIP‐14 in Japanese had a high internal reliability, was significantly associated with dental status and comparable ranking for items when compared with studies from other countries.  相似文献

Objective

The 15D is a self-administered questionnaire for assessment of health-related quality of life, which contains 15 questions with 5 response options each. This study was conducted to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Japanese 15D.

Methods

The subjects were 430 community-dwelling elderly people. Each item of the 15D was scored on a 5-point Likert scale, with level 1 being the best, score 1. Reliability was assessed by determination of the internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Criterion-based validity was assessed using the Japanese version of the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence (TMIG index). Acceptability was assessed by inquiring about the time required to complete the questionnaire and the burden felt in responding to it.

Results

The answers of 423 individuals who responded to all items were analyzed. The median time required to complete the questionnaire was 5.0 minutes, and the proportion of subjects who indicated that the questionnaire was easy to complete was 98.3%. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for all 15 items in the 2 surveys were 0.793 and 0.792, respectively. The intraclass correlation coefficients for the 15 items ranged from 0.44 to 0.72. In the relationship between the 15D and the NHP, the correlation coefficients between the corresponding domains were higher than those between non-corresponding domains. The prevalence of disability in higher-level functional capacity was higher in the “level 2 to 5” group than in the “level 1” group.

Conclusions

The Japanese version of the 15D showed sufficient internal consistency and moderate repeatability. Because of the short time required to complete the Japanese 15D and the significant relationships between the scores on the 15D and the NHP, and between the 15D and higher-level functional capacity, the acceptability and validity of the Japanese 15D were considered to be sufficient.  相似文献

Self-report questionnaires about sleep habits are useful for population-based studies because of their low cost. However, there is no valid and reliable self-report sleep questionnaire for elementary school-aged children. The aim of this study was to examine the availability of a simple self-report sleep questionnaire for 9- to 12-year-old children. Participants were 58 children aged 9–12 years from one elementary school in a rural area of Japan. Participants wore an accelerometer for 10 consecutive days and completed the sleep questionnaire twice. Sleep measures included bedtime, wake time, and assumed and actual sleep duration on weekdays and weekends. The data obtained from the accelerometer and sleep/wake scoring software were used to assess criterion validity. Pearson correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman plots were used to evaluate the relationships between objective and self-reported sleep measures. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients. The correlations between the objective and questionnaire measures were moderate to high (r = 0.45 to 0.90) and significant, except girls’ wake time, assumed sleep duration, and actual sleep duration on weekends. The Bland-Altman plots indicated that bedtime and wake time obtained from the questionnaire were underestimated for both weekdays and weekends. Test-retest reliability of the questionnaire was high, with intraclass coefficients ranging from 0.71 to 0.99. Although caution should be exercised when evaluating sleep duration on weekends, this simple self-reported sleep questionnaire is a useful tool for assessing sleep habits in 9- to 12-year-old children, particularly in school-based and large-scale epidemiological studies.

Factors associated with the oral health‐related quality of life in elderly persons in dental clinic: validation of a Mandarin Chinese version of GOHAI Objectives: To translate the original English version of Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) into Mandarin Chinese and assess its reliability and validity for use among the elderly in inland China and to explore the factors associated with oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL). Methods: The original English version of GOHAI was translated, back‐translated and cross‐culturally adapted. The psychometric properties of GOHAI‐M were assessed in a sample of 263 people aged 60 years and over and OHRQoL was examined in 221 subjects using GOHAI‐M. Multiple regression analysis was conducted. Results: Internal consistency of the GOHAI‐M was excellent (Cronbach’s α : 0.81). Split‐half reliability coefficient was 0.80, and item‐scale correlation coefficient ranged from 0.25 to 0.71. Self‐rated oral health was significantly associated with OHRQoL (rs = 0.505, p < 0.01). The relation coefficient between GOHAI‐M and self‐perceived need for dental treatment and number of missing teeth were 0.231 and ?0.653, respectively (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis found that better OHRQoL was significantly associated with better self‐ratings of oral health (β = 0.497, p = 0.01), number of missing teeth (β = 0.187, p < 0.01) and life satisfaction (β = 0.132, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The Mandarin Chinese version of GOHAI demonstrates acceptable reliability and validity. OHRQoL is associated with self‐rated oral health, number of missing teeth and satisfaction with life.  相似文献

Six intraspecific lineages (Lineages 1–6) of Asparagopsis taxiformis have been previously established based on mitochondrial cox2‐cox3 intergenic spacer and a partial cox1 sequences. ‘Lineage 2’ (L2) was suggested to be a recent introduction to the Mediterranean Sea, but its source population has not yet been identified. In order to clarify the nature of northwestern Pacific populations, we performed extensive sampling in Japan (60 individuals from 16 locations) and molecular phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial sequences. Sixteen additional individuals, collected from eight locations in the Indo‐Pacific, Caribbean, and Mediterranean regions, were also analyzed. Combined sequence analyses revealed that the Japanese populations only consisted of L2. Out of 19 combined haplotypes identified within L2, two are shared between Japan and the Mediterranean Sea and the Hawaiian Islands, and 12 were identified as endemic to Japan. Genetic analyses of population differentiation suggested that Japanese populations are genetically isolated from the Mediterranean and the Hawaiian populations. A genetic disjunction appears to separate two subpopulations within Japan: one between Toi and Kagoshima and the other between Ojikajima Island and Kagoshima in the Kyushu area.  相似文献

Stigma associated with being overweight or obese is widespread. Given that weight loss is difficult to achieve and maintain, researchers have been calling for interventions that reduce the impact of weight stigma on life functioning. Sound measures that are sensitive to change are needed to help guide and inform intervention studies. This study presents the weight self‐stigma questionnaire (WSSQ). The WSSQ has 12 items and is designed for use only with populations of overweight or obese persons. Two samples of participants—one treatment seeking, one nontreatment seeking—were used for validation (N = 169). Results indicate that the WSSQ has good reliability and validity, and contains two distinct subscales—self‐devaluation and fear of enacted stigma. The WSSQ could be useful for identifying individuals who may benefit from a stigma reduction intervention and may also help evaluate programs designed to reduce stigma.  相似文献

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) syndrome is usually defined as a condition where an individual experiences adverse health effects that he or she believes is due to exposure to objects that emit electromagnetic fields. The aim of this study was to develop a questionnaire that would identify the key symptoms associated with EHS and determine how often these symptoms occur in the general population of the United Kingdom. In the pilot study, an EHS questionnaire was developed and tested. In Study 1 the EHS questionnaire was revised and sent to a randomly selected sample of 20,000 people. Principal components analysis of the symptoms resulted in eight subscales: neurovegetative, skin, auditory, headache, cardiorespiratory, cold related, locomotor, and allergy related symptoms. Study 2 established the validity of the questionnaire in that EHS individuals showed a higher severity of symptoms on all subscales compared to the control group. The two key results of this study were the development of a scale that provides an index of the type and intensity of symptoms commonly experienced by people believing themselves to be EHS and a screening tool that researchers can use to pre-select the most sensitive individuals to take part in their research.  相似文献

Impact of pollinator shift on differentiation of floral morphology has attracted the interest of naturalists for many years. A comparative investigation was conducted for determining the pollination characteristics, including pollinator assemblage, floral morphology, flowering phenology, and self‐compatibility, of two closely related Clerodendrum species—insular C. izuinsulare and widespread C. trichotomum. Japanese black swallowtail butterflies were the predominant flower visitors in mainland Japan, whereas diurnal hawk moths were predominantly found on the Izu Islands, a chain of oceanic islands located off the southeastern coast of the main Japanese island of Honshu in the west Pacific Ocean. The corolla tube of C. izuinsulare was longer than that of C. trichotomum, whereas the filaments and petals of C. izuinsulare were shorter than those of C. trichotomum. The flowering season of C. izuinsulare was later than that of C. trichotomum. The self‐compatibility of C. izuinsulare was higher than that of C. trichotomum. These differences might be associated with the low density of Japanese black swallowtail butterflies and dominance of diurnal hawk moths on the Izu Islands.  相似文献

With increasing electrical device usage, social concerns about the possible effects of 60 Hz electromagnetic fields on human health have increased. The number of people with self‐attributed electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) who complain of various subjective symptoms such as headache and insomnia has also increased. However, it is unclear whether EHS results from physiological or other origins. In this double‐blinded study, we simultaneously investigated physiological changes (heart rate, respiration rate, and heart rate variability), subjective symptoms, and perception of the magnetic field to assess origins of the subjective symptoms. Two volunteer groups of 15 self‐reported EHS and 16 non‐EHS individuals were tested with exposure to sham and real (60 Hz, 12.5 µT) magnetic fields for 30 min. Magnetic field exposure did not have any effects on physiological parameters or eight subjective symptoms in either group. There was also no evidence that the EHS group perceived the magnetic field better than the non‐EHS group. In conclusion, the subjective symptoms did not result from the 60 Hz, 12.5 µT magnetic field exposures but from other non‐physiological factors. The present study describes the development and initial validation of a new obesity‐specific, self‐report measure of health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) for children aged 5–13 years. Participants included 141 obese children (mean age = 9.2 years, 67% female, 55% black, mean zBMI = 2.52) and their primary caregivers. Children completed Sizing Me Up (obesity‐specific HRQOL) and the PedsQL (generic HRQOL). Item content for Sizing Me Up was based on the published child obesity and HRQOL literatures and expert opinion. Items use phrasing to orient children to respond to questions in context of his/her size (e.g., “were teased by other kids because of your size”). Caregivers completed Sizing Them Up, a parallel parent‐proxy, obesity‐specific HRQOL measure. Initial psychometric evaluation of Sizing Me Up was completed by conducting a factor analysis and determining internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and convergent and construct validity. Sizing Me Up is a 22‐item measure with five scales (i.e., Emotional Functioning, Physical Functioning, Social Avoidance, Positive Social Attributes, and Teasing/Marginalization) that account for 57% of the variance and a total HRQOL score. Internal consistency coefficients range from 0.68 to 0.85. Test–retest reliabilities range from 0.53 to 0.78. Good convergent validity was demonstrated with the PedsQL (rs = 0.35–0.65) and the parent‐proxy Sizing Them Up (rs = 0.22–0.44). Sizing Me Up represents the first obesity‐specific HRQOL measure developed specifically for younger school‐aged children (aged 5–13 years) with preliminary evidence of strong psychometric properties that likely has both clinical and research utility in a variety of settings.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the relationship between self‐estimated whole body size and fatness and whole body and regional composition, and the relationship between self‐estimated whole body fatness and self‐estimated regional fatness in Japanese university students. Research Methods and Procedures: This was a cross‐sectional study using Japanese university students (110 men and 79 women). The percentage of body fat, fat mass (FM), and fat‐free mass (FFM) were measured by underwater weighing and used as body composition variables. Subcutaneous fat thicknesses were determined at seven sites by ultrasonography to estimate regional body composition, and six circumferences and four breadths to estimate regional size. Relative body size and fatness were self‐estimated using a questionnaire. Results: Only women tended to estimate themselves as being fatter than they actually were. Self‐estimated body fatness moderately correlated with the percentage of body fat (men, r = 0.41; women, r = 0.40) FM (men, r = 0.50; women, r = 0.51), and body mass index (r = 0.56 for men and 0.56 for women). After adjusting for the percentages of body fat and FM, self‐estimated fatness correlated with body mass index (r = 0.31 for men and r = 0.37 for women). Among self‐estimated regional fatness, self‐estimated abdominal fatness had the strongest correlation with self‐estimated whole body fatness in both genders. Discussion: The low correlation between estimated and actual body fatness in both genders indicates that Japanese university students, especially women, inaccurately estimate their percentage of body fat. In fact, both men and women primarily estimate their whole body fatness by body weight relative to height.  相似文献
