Nasal morphology and the emergence of Homo erectus   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Modern humans, among extant hominoids, possess a unique projecting, external nose whose basic structure is reflected in a series of skeletal features including nasal bone convexity, an internasal angle, lateral nasal aperture eversion, prominence and anterior positioning of the anterior nasal spine, an acute angle of the subnasal alveolar clivus, and an expansion of the breadth of the nasal bones relative to that of the piriform aperture. This anatomy appears with the emergence of Homo erectus ca. 1.6 million years ago. Although it undoubtedly evolved in the context of craniofacial and dental reduction during hominid evolution, it appears to have been primarily a response to the need for moisture conservation in an arid environment via turbulence enhancement and ambient cooling of expired air. Its appearance at this time in hominid evolution, in conjunction with the presence of a fatigue-resistant locomotor anatomy characteristic of archaic members of the genus Homo, indicates a shift to increasingly prolonged bouts of activity in open and arid environments.  相似文献

Published reports of palaeopathological analyses of skeletal collections from Central Asia are, to date, scarce. During the macroscopic examination of skeletal remains dating to the early first millennium AD from the Ustyurt Plateau, Uzbekistan, diagnostic features suggestive of leprosy were found on one individual from Devkesken 6. This adult female exhibited rhinomaxillary changes indicative of leprosy: resorption of the anterior nasal spine, rounding and widening of the nasal aperture, erosion of the alveolar margin, loss of a maxillary incisor, and inflammatory changes in the hard palate. While it is unclear whether the bones of the hands and the feet from this individual were absent as a result of collection strategy or poor preservation, lesions affecting the tibia and fibula were recorded, and the ways in which they may be related to a diagnosis of leprosy are discussed. This is the first skeletal evidence of leprosy from Central Asia and raises questions not only about the spread of the disease in the past, but also about the living conditions of what traditionally were thought of as nomadic peoples.  相似文献

Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis is an unusual form of nasal airway obstruction in the neonate. Pediatric plastic surgeons are often involved in the management of these children and should recognize this condition and know the treatment options. Fifteen cases of children with congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis were reviewed for presentation of the disorder, management, and effectiveness of treatment, making it the largest series to date. There were nine male patients and six female patients in the series. They all experienced varying degrees of nasal obstruction at birth and were managed on the basis of the severity of their symptoms. Twelve patients were treated surgically in the first year of life, with a mean age at operation of 97 days (range, 3 to 362 days). Two patients required surgical intervention during their teenage years (age, 14 and 18 years) because of persistent symptoms, and one patient (age, 2 years) with mild symptoms was managed medically. Associated craniofacial anomalies were present in six cases (40 percent). Surgical enlargement of the pyriform aperture was successfully performed through an upper buccal sulcus incision in 14 patients. Preoperative symptoms of upper airway obstruction were improved in all patients at an average follow-up of 2.4 years (range, 1 month to 5 years). Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis varies in presentation and severity, occurring either as an isolated congenital anomaly or in association with developmental craniofacial anomalies. It can be effectively managed by surgical enlargement of the pyriform aperture without significant recurrence or long-term morbidity.  相似文献

Humeral septal aperture is studied in a large Mediaeval skeletal series from England. The aims are to investigate associations between septal aperture and sex, age, side and humeral robusticity; and to evaluate any associations with relative projection of ulna coronoid and olecranon processes. In this way, it is hoped to shed light on age at occurrence and the causation of the trait. Results showed a paucity of cases in juveniles. In adults, the trait was more common in left bones and in females. No association was found with humeral robusticity or humero-ulnar conformation. Detailed morphological study of humeral septa of individuals with and without apertures suggested that septal aperture forms via resorption from the anterior surface of the septum. In this group, apertures appear generally to form in early adult life. It is suggested that in the study group septal aperture generally arises from impingement on the humeral septum by the coronoid and olecranon processes, chiefly the former. It is tentatively suggested that frequency of septal aperture may be an index of joint hypermobility in earlier populations.  相似文献

Primary correction of the unilateral cleft lip nose: a 15-year experience   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper reviews a 15-year personal experience based on 400 unilateral cleft nasal deformities that were reconstructed using a method that repositions the alar cartilage by freeing it from the skin and lining and shifts it to a new position. The rotation-advancement lip procedure facilitates the exposure and approach to the nasal reconstruction. The nasal soft tissues are transected from the skeletal base, reshaped, repositioned, and secured by using temporary stent sutures that readapt the alar cartilage, skin, and lining. The nasal floor is closed and the ala base is positioned to match the normal side. Good subsequent growth with maintenance of the reconstruction has been noted in this series. The repair does not directly expose or suture the alar cartilage. Improvement in the cleft nasal deformity is noted in 80 percent of the cases. Twenty percent require additional techniques to achieve the desired symmetry. This method has been used by the author as his primary unilateral cleft nasal repair and has been taught to residents and fellows under his direction with good results. This technique eliminates the severe cleft nasal deformity seen in many secondary cases.  相似文献

Neandertals have been characterized as possessing features indicative of cold-climate adaptation largely based on ecogeographical morphological patterning found in recent humans. Interestingly, one character that deviates from this pattern is a relatively wide nasal aperture. The ecogeographical patterning of the nasal aperture in recent humans would predict instead that Neandertals should exhibit reduced nasal breadth dimensions. To explain this apparent anomaly it has been argued that a reduction in Neandertal nasal breadth was not possible due to dentognathic constraints on their midfaces via large anterior palatal breadth dimensions, especially large intercanine distances. A complicating factor in understanding the relationship between anterior palate breadth and nasal breadth is that both measurements are also correlated with facial prognathism. It is, therefore, unknown to what degree the relationship between anterior palate breadth and nasal breadth in Neandertals is a function of the pleisiomorphic retention of a prognathic facial skeleton. We used path analysis to test for a causal relationship between intercanine breadth and nasal breadth taking into account the potential effect of facial projection and facial prognathism (i.e., basion-nasion length and basion-prosthion length) using a large sample of geographically diverse recent and fossil Homo. Additionally, we examined the ontogenetic relationship between nasal breadth and intercanine breadth using a longitudinal human growth series to determine whether these variables exhibit similar growth trajectories. The results of these analyses indicate a weaker association between intercanine breadth and nasal breadth than expected, and that more variation in nasal breadth can be explained through basion-prosthion length rather than anterior palatal breadth dimensions. Moreover, the ontogenetic development of anterior palate breadth does not correspond to the growth trajectory of the breadth of the nose. These results explain the apparent paradox of wide piriform apertures in generally cooler climate-adapted Neandertals without resorting to dentognathic constraints, and provide additional insight into both the adaptive and nonadaptive (i.e., neutral) basis for Neandertal facial evolution.  相似文献

Theoretically, individuals whose ancestors evolved in cold and/or dry climates should have greater nasal mucosal surface area relative to air volume of the nasal passages than individuals whose ancestors evolved in warm, humid climates. A high surface-area-to-volume (SA/V) ratio allows relatively more air to come in contact with the mucosa and facilitates more efficient heat and moisture exchange during inspiration and expiration, which would be adaptive in a cold, dry environment. Conversely, a low SA/V ratio is not as efficient at recapturing heat and moisture during expiration and allows for better heat dissipation, which would be adaptive in a warm, humid environment. To test this hypothesis, cross-sectional measurements of the nasal passages that reflect surface area and volume were collected from a sample of CT scans of patients of European and African ancestry. Results indicate that individuals of European descent do have higher SA/V ratios than individuals of African descent, but only when decongested. Otherwise, the two groups show little difference. This pattern of variation may be due to selection for different SA/V configurations during times of physical exertion, which has been shown to elicit decongestion. Relationships between linear measurements of the skeletal nasal aperture and cavity and cross-sectional dimensions were also examined. Contrary to predictions, the nasal index, the ratio of nasal breadth to nasal height, is not strongly correlated with internal dimensions. However, differences between the nasal indices of the two groups are highly significant. These results may be indicative of different adaptive solutions to the same problem.  相似文献

Clinical and pathologic anatomic parameters were studied in 50 patients with maxillonasal dysplasia (Binder's syndrome). The skeletal deformity causing the flat and low-set nose was in typical patients a palpable depression in the anterior nasal floor (fossa prenasalis) and a localized maxillary hypoplasia in the alar base region. Class III malocclusion was found in 54 percent. In 6 percent of the patients a slope (sulcus prenasalis) was found instead of a fossa in the anterior nasal floor, and in one patient a rudimentary fossa was found. Concomitant malformations were noted in 18 percent, and a hereditary connection was seen in 16 percent. The etiology is discussed in relation to the development of the premaxilla and the appearance of a secondary external trabecular network of bone in the canine region. An inhibition of the latter ossification center would explain the localized hypoplasia in the floor and walls of the piriform aperture in maxillonasal dysplasia.  相似文献

In order to study the adaptive significance of the nasal chamber in felids (Mammalia, Carnivora), we measured the nasal aperture area and used it as an indirect estimate of the nasal chamber volume. We assume that this measurement relates to the metabolic demands for oxygen by animals, which in turn would depend on their mass, hunting techniques and/or the environment inhabited. The proven relationship between nasal aperture area and body size among living felids was used to estimate the mass and different aspects of the paleobiology of nine extinct felids from the New and Old World, six of the subfamily Machairodontinae and three of the subfamily Felinae. Results obtained confirm that the North American lion and the Eurasian cave lion were both comparable in size, with a body about 25% heavier than in today's lions. The large nasal apertures of smilodontines suggest that, compared to extant felids with skulls of similar length, these ambushing saber-tooth cats had a more robust body and thus greater oxygen demands. In contrast, coursing homotherines had longer skulls, narrower palates and a more lightened body than other saber-tooth cats.  相似文献

Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis is a rare, but increasingly recognized, form of neonatal nasal airway obstruction. The condition may occur as an isolated anomaly or in association with holoprosencephaly. Treatment is determined by the overall prognosis of the infant and the symptomatic severity of the stenosis.  相似文献

The relationship between the lateral nasal gland and sacs of the maxillary recesses was investigated. The nasal sacs possess a well-defined aperture communicating with the nasal cavities. It was concluded that the sacs and not the body of the gland produce mucous secretions that moisten the inhaled dry air of the desert and may also act as reservoirs. A possible function of the body of the nasal gland is water economy by excretion of concentrated salts.  相似文献

Biology of the Hyolitha   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Hyoliths are Paleozoic fossils that have a calcareous exoskeleton consisting of an elongate, usually bilaterally symmetrical cone, a close fitting operculum, and a pair of curved appendages. Their skeletal ultrastructure resembles the crossed-lamellar shell layers of some molluscs. Several specimens from the Ordovician of France and the Cambrian of Antarctica have parts of the gut preserved by infilling matrix, showing that both mouth ad anus were located near the cone aperture. Muscle scars in other hyolith shells indicate that the animal had a series of dorsoventral and longitudinal, or longitudinal and circular muscles, which operated through a hydrostatic skeleton to protract and retract the head, to open and close the operculum, and to move the appendages. Although the shell form and skeletal ultra-structure of hyoliths are of a molluscan type, the muscle insertions suggest that the hyolith cone is not homologous with the dorsal exoskeleton of primitive molluscs. Hyoliths probably constitute a small extinct branch of phylum size, related to the Mollusca and the Sipunculoidea. All three groups may have had common ancestors in the late Precambrian.  相似文献

Many prediction guidelines exist in facial approximation for determining the soft-tissue features of the face, and the reliability of each is generally unknown. This study examines four published and commonly used soft-tissue prediction guidelines for estimating nose projection, two of which also estimate the position of the pronasale. The methods tested are those described by: 1) Gerasimov ([1971] The Face Finder; London: Hutchinson & Co.), using the distal third of the nasal bones and the nasal spine; 2) Krogman ([1962] The Human Skeleton in Forensic Medicine; Springfield: Charles C. Thomas), using the average soft-tissue depth at midphiltrum, plus three times the length of the nasal spine (and a variation of this technique: plus three times the distance of the tip of the nasal spine from the nasal aperture); 3) Prokopec and Ubelaker ([2002] Forensic Sci Commun 4:1-4), using the reflected profile line of the nasal aperture; and 4) George ([1987] J Forensic Sci 32:1305-1330), using a variation of the Goode method. Four identical hard-tissue tracings were made of 59 adult lateral head cephlograms (29 males, mean age 24, SD 10 years; 30 females, mean age 23, SD 5 years) on separate sheets of tracing paper. One soft-tissue tracing was also made for each radiograph. All tracings were marked with three identical reference points. Soft-tissue tracings were isolated from one of us (C.N.S.), who attempted under blind conditions to predict pronasale position and nose projection on the hard-tissue tracings, using the soft-tissue prediction guides above. Actual soft-tissue tracings were then compared to each of the predicted tracings, and differences in projection/pronasale position were measured. Results indicate that for nose projection, methods 3 and 4 performed well, while methods 1 and 2 performed poorly. Features which are most related to nose projection/pronasale are described in this paper, as are regression equations generated from these variables that predict pronasale/nose projection better than the traditional methods mentioned above. The results of this study are significant because they: 1) indicate that the popular facial approximation methods used to build the nose are inaccurate and produce incorrect nose anatomy; and 2) indicate that the new pronasale prediction methods developed here appear to have less error than traditional methods.  相似文献

The secondary deformity of the unilateral cleft lip nose has many components. One is the dorsal dislocation of the lateral crus of the alar cartilage. We used a conchal composite graft positioned between the piriform aperture and the lateral crus and the upper lateral cartilage to correct this dislocation in nine patients. We believe that this graft is effective because it elevates the lateral crus of the alar cartilage off the depressed piriform aperture. This technique is very simple to perform, and it is easy to achieve nasal symmetry. Our results have been quite satisfactory, with no recurrence of dorsal dislocation. The donor site was covered by a subcutaneous pedicled flap from the cephaloauricular sulcus, leaving an inconspicuous deformity.  相似文献

The cranial airways are in the center of the human face. Therefore variation in the size and shape of these central craniofacial structures could have important consequences for the surrounding midfacial morphology during development and evolution. Yet such interactions are unclear because one school of thought, based on experimental and developmental evidence, suggests a relative independence (modularity) of these two facial compartments, whereas another one assumes tight morphological integration. This study uses geometric morphometrics of modern humans (N = 263) and 40 three‐dimensional‐landmarks of the skeletal nasopharynx and nasal cavity and outer midfacial skeleton to analyze these questions in terms of modularity. The sizes of all facial compartments were all strongly correlated. Shape integration was high between the cranial airways and the outer midfacial skeleton and between the latter and the anterior airway openings (skeletal regions close to and including piriform aperture). However, no shape integration was detected between outer midface and posterior airway openings (nasopharynx and choanae). Similarly, no integration was detected between posterior and anterior airway openings. This may reflect functional modularization of nasal cavity compartments related to respiratory physiology and differential developmental interactions with the face. Airway size likely relates to the energetics of the organism, whereas airways shape might be more indicative of respiratory physiology and climate. Although this hypothesis should be addressed in future steps, here we suggest that selection on morphofunctional characteristics of the cranial airways could have cascading effects for the variation, development, and evolution of the human face. Deviant forms of polycolpate pollen, differing from the typical pattern in the number and arrangement of apertures, are found to be similar in distantly related dicotyledon taxa. The range of variation of common and deviant aperture patterns may be arranged as a continuous series, which may be described as a gradual and geometrically regular transformation of the deviant form with a meridional circular colpus to one of the common polycolpate conditions. Similar series have been observed in the taxa with colporate and pseudocolpate pollen. All possible spatial isomers and their mirror symmetrical variants of the deviant polycolpate and polypseudocolpate pollen have been predicted in terms of the suggested regularities of aperture multiplication. Some of them have been identified in the samples studied.  相似文献

Two new species, Hypancistrus phantasma and Hypancistrus margaritatus, are described based on material from the Rio Negro drainage. Both species are distinguished from congeners by unique color patterns. Hypancistrus phantasma is described from the Rio Uaupes and differs from congeners by having a tan body with small dark spots (vs. dark with light spots or with saddles or stripes). Hypancistrus margaritatus is described from the Takutu River and differs from congeners by having densely-packed light spots on a dark brown background, with spots about the size of the nasal aperture (vs. sparse light spots either smaller or larger than the nasal aperture, or brown to black spots, saddles, or stripes).  相似文献

We describe several novel morphological features in the nasal region of the hammerhead shark Sphyrna tudes. Unlike the open, rounded incurrent nostril of non-hammerhead shark species, the incurrent nostril of S. tudes is a thin keyhole-like aperture. We discovered a groove running anterior and parallel to the incurrent nostril. This groove, dubbed the minor nasal groove to distinguish it from the larger, previously described, (major) nasal groove, is common to all eight hammerhead species. Using life-sized plastic models generated at 200 μm resolution from an X-ray scan, we also investigated flow in the nasal region. Even modest oncoming flow speeds stimulate extensive, but not complete, circulation within the model olfactory chamber, with flow passing through the two main olfactory channels. Flow crossed from one channel to another via a gap in the olfactory array, sometimes guided by the interlamellar channels. Major and minor nasal grooves, as well as directing flow into the olfactory chamber, can, in conjunction with the nasal bridge separating incurrent and excurrent nostrils, limit flow passing into the olfactory chamber, possibly to protect the delicate nasal structures. This is the first simulation of internal flow within the olfactory chamber of a shark.  相似文献

Two new monotypic genera and a new monotypic family Rozanovicystidae of the class Cincta are described from the Middle Cambrian (Mayaktakh Formation) of the northeastern part of the Siberian Platform. Based on data obtained by morphofunctional analysis, there is a possibility that these animals could move by jet propulsion by ejecting water from the opercular aperture. Probable homologies of the main skeletal parts are discussed.  相似文献

Primary correction of the unilateral cleft nasal deformity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An 18-year experience with the management of the unilateral cleft nasal deformity in 1200 patients is presented. A primary cleft nasal correction was performed at the time of lip repair in infancy; a secondary rhinoplasty was done in adolescence after nasal growth was complete. The technical details of the authors' primary cleft nasal correction are described. Exposure was obtained through the incisions of the rotation-advancement design. The cartilaginous framework was widely undermined from the skin envelope. The nasal lining was released from the piriform aperture, and a new maxillary platform was created on the cleft side by rotating a "muscular roll" underneath the cleft nasal ala. The alar web was then managed by using a mattress suture running from the web cartilage to the facial musculature. In 60 percent of cases, these maneuvers were sufficient to produce symmetrical dome projection and nostril symmetry. In the other 40 percent, characterized by more severe hypoplasia of the cleft lower lateral cartilage, an inverted U infracartilaginous incision and an alar dome supporting suture (Tajima) to the contralateral upper cartilage were used. Residual dorsal hooding of the lower lateral cartilage was most effectively managed with this suture. This primary approach to the cleft nasal deformity permits more balanced growth and development of the ala and domal complex. Some of the psychological trauma of the early school years may be avoided. Also, because of the early repositioning of the cleft nasal cartilages, the deformity addressed at the time of the adult rhinoplasty is less severe and more amenable to an optimal final result.  相似文献
