Mini UV lamps were installed over antarctic plants at Léonie Island, Antarctic peninsula, and shoot length measurements of Deschampsia antarctica were performed during the austral summer January–February 1999.We studied the response of the antarctic hairgrass, Deschampsia antarctica to enhanced UV-B. In a climate room experiment we exposed tillers of Deschampsia antarctica, collected at Léonie Island, Antarctic peninsula, to ambient and enhanced levels of UV-B radiation. In this climate room experiment with 0, 2.5 and 5 kJ m–2 day–1 UV-BBE treatments we observed that length growth of shoots at 2.5 and 5 kJ m–2 day–1 UV-BBE was markedly reduced compared to 0 kJ m–2 day–1 UV-BBE. In addition, there was an increased number of shoots and increased leaf thickness with enhanced UV-B. The Relative Growth Rate (RGR) was not affected by UV-B, possibly because reduced shoot length growth by enhanced UV-B was compensated by increased tillering. Light response curves of net leaf photosynthesis of plants exposed to 5 kJ m–2 day–1 UV-BBE did not differ from those exposed to 0 kJ m–2 day–1 UV-BBE. The content of UV-B absorbing compounds of plants exposed to increasing UV-B did not significantly change.Mini UV-B lamp systems were installed in the field, to expose the terrestrial antarctic vegetation at Léonie Island to enhanced solar UV-B. In that study, the increment of shoot length of tagged plants of Deschampsia antarctica during the January-February 1999 at Léonie Island, was recorded and compared to shoot length growth under controlled conditions. The consequences of enhanced UV-B radiation as a result of ozone depletion for the terrestrial antarctic ecosytems are discussed.  相似文献

Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.)Karst.) from seven seed sources was grown in a greenhouse with 8.3 and 14.7 kJ·m−2·d−1 m UV-BBE (biologically effective UV-B: 280–320 nm) irradiation, and with no supplemental irradiation as control. The seedlings total biomass (dry weight) and shoot growth decreased with high UV-B treatment but spruce from low elevation seed sources were more affected. The seedlings grown at the highest UV-B irradiance (14.7 kJ·m−2·d−1) showed from 5 to 38% inhibition of total biomass and 15 to 70 % shoot growth inhibition. Norway spruce populations from higher altitude seed sources manifested greater tolerance to UV-B radiation compared to plants from low altitudes. Changes in phospholipids and protective pigments were also determined. The plants grown at the lower UV-B irradiance (8.3 kJ·m−2·d−1) showed greater ability to concentrations UV-B-absorbing pigments then control plants. Chlorophyll a fluorescence parameter Rfd, (Rfd=(Fm-Fs)/Fs) showed a significant decrease in needles of UV-B treated plants and this correlated with the altitude of seed source. Exposure to UV-B affect levels of the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm). Results from this study suggest that the response to increased levels of UV-B radiation is depended upon the ecotypic differentiation of Norway spruce and involved changes in metabolites in plant tissues.  相似文献

Hybridisation between certain willow species is a common feature leading to novel genotypes varying in growth rate and stress tolerance. The objective of this 4-week study was to investigate the effects of decreased watering, enhanced ultraviolet-B irradiation (UV-BBE, 280–315 nm, 7.2 kJ m−2 day−1) and combined decreased watering and enhanced UV-B irradiation on di- and polyamines in the leaves of Salix myrsinifolia and its hybrid with S. myrsinites. Control plantlets were well-watered and exposed to ambient UV-B irradiation (UV-BBE, 3.6 kJ m−2 day−1). HPLC analyses showed that the constitutive concentrations of soluble di- and polyamines varied markedly between S. myrsinifolia and its hybrids. The degree of responses to treatments also varied: in S. myrsinifolia, concentrations of free putrescine were clearly increased by reduced watering, while in the hybrid willow, change in putrescine was less pronounced and not significant. Results also showed that the increase in putrescine in S. myrsinifolia by reduced watering was mitigated by concurrent enhancement of UV-B irradiation. There were no direct UV-B effects on the soluble polyamines.  相似文献

IR68 and Dular rice cultivars were grown under ambient, 13.0 (simulating 20% ozone depletion) and 19.1 (simulating 40% ozone depletion) kJ m-2 day-1 of biologically effective ultraviolet-B (UV-BBE) for 4 weeks. Plant height and leaf area were significantly reduced by supplemental UV-BBE radiation. Greater reduction in leaf area than of plant height was observed. A decrease in indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content and increase in peroxidase and IAA oxidase activities of UV-B treated plants in both cultivars were observed compared with ambient control. Calmodulin content also decreased after plants were treated with high supplemental UV-B for two weeks and medium UV-B treatment for four weeks. The results indicated that peroxidase and IAA oxidase activities in rice leaves were stimulated by supplemental UV-B, resulting in the destruction of IAA which in turn may cause inhibition of rice leaf growth. Although the mechanism is unclear, calmodulin is most likely involved in leaf growth.  相似文献

This study reports changes in the plant's chemical composition and the decomposition of this plant material under enhanced solar UV-B radiation. Calamagrostis epigeios, a dominant grass species in the dune grassland in The Netherlands, was grown outdoor on an experimental field under ambient and enhanced solar UV-B (5 and 7.5 kJ m-2 day-1 UV-BBE, respectively), corresponding to about 15% stratospheric ozone depletion. After one growing season aerial plant parts were harvested. The decomposition of this harvested leaf material was studied in a dune grassland and on the above mentioned experimental field under ambient (5 kJ m-2 day-1 UV-BBE) and enhanced (7.5 kJ m-2 day-1 UV-BBE) radiation, using litter bags. The chemical quality of the leaves grown under enhanced solar UV-B changed. There was an increase in the leaf content of lignin, while no significant changes occurred for the content of -cellulose, hemicellulose and tannins under enhanced UV-B. In the field, the rate of decomposition of leaf material grown under enhanced UV-B (with an increased content of lignin) was reduced. The content of lignin of the decomposing leaf material increased, but less under exposure to enhanced UV-B. The latter may be explained by photodegradation of the lignin. The consequences of enhanced UV-B radiation for carbon fluxes in the dune grassland ecosystem are discussed.  相似文献

The impact of elevated ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–320 nm) on membrane systems and lipid peroxidation, and possible involvement of active oxygen radicals was investigated in leaves of two UV-B susceptible rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L. cvs IR74 and Dular). Rice seedlings were grown in a greenhouse for 10 days and then treated with biologically effective UV-B (UV-BBE) radiation for 28 days. Oxidative stress effects were evaluated by measuring superoxide anion (O2) generation rate, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and relative electrolyte conductivity (EC) for IR74 and Dular at 0 (control), 6 or 13 kJ m?2 day?1 UV-BBE. Significant increases in these parameters were found in rice plants grown at 13 vs 0 kJ m?2 day?1 UV-BBE after 28 days; indicating that disruption of membrane systems may be an eventual reason for UV-B-induced injury in rice plants. There was a positive correlation between O2? generation and increases in EC or MDA in leaves. Activities of enzymatic and nonenzymatic free radical scavengers were measured for IR74 after 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of exposure to 13 or 0 UV-BBE to evaluate dynamics of these responses over time. Activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase (but not ascorbate peroxidase) and concentrations of ascorbic acid and glutathione were enhanced by 13 vs 0 UV-BBE after 14 days of UV-B exposure. Further exposure to 28 days of UV-B was associated with a decline in enzyme activities and ascorbic acid, but not glutathione. It is suggested that UV-B-induced injury may be associated with disturbance of active oxygen metabolism through the destruction and alteration of both enzymatic and nonenzymatic defense systems in rice.  相似文献

Supply of aqueous solution of triadimefon (20 mg dm−3) to unstressed green gram plants increased the contents of soluble proteins, amino acids, nitrate and nitrite, and the activity of nitrate reductase in the leaves and nitrate reductase in nodules. The nitrogenase activity in nodules and roots was also increased. Number and fresh mass of nodules and their nitrate and nitrite contents were also higher than those of the controls. In contrast, the UV-B stress (12.2 kJ m−2 d−1) suppressed nodulation and nitrogen metabolism in leaves and roots compared to plants under natural UV-B (10 kJ m−2 d−1). Triadimefon-treated plants did not show such severe inhibitions after exposure to elevated UV-B. Thus triadimefon increased their tolerance to UV-B stress.  相似文献

Due to anthropogenic influences, solar UV-B irradiance at the earth’s surface is increasing. To determine the effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on photosynthetic characteristics of Prunus dulcis, two-year-old seedlings of the species were submitted to four levels of UV-B stress, namely 0 (UV-Bc), 4.42 (UV-B1), 7.32 (UV-B2) and 9.36 (UV-B3) kJ m−2 d−1. Effects of UV-B stress on a range of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters (FPs), Chl contents and photosynthetic gas-exchange parameters were investigated. UV-B stress promoted an increase in minimal fluorescence of dark-adapted state (F0) and F0/Fm, and a decrease in variable fluorescence (Fv, Fv/Fm, Fv/F0 and F0/Fm) due to its adverse effects on photosystem II (PSII) activity. No significant change was observed for maximal fluorescence of dark-adapted state (Fm). Enhanced UV-B radiation caused a significant inhibition of net photosynthetic rate (P N) at UV-B2 and UV-B3 levels and this was accompanied by a reduction in stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E). The contents of Chl a, b, and total Chl content (a+b) were also significantly reduced at increased UV-B stress. In general, adverse UV-B effects became significant at the highest tested radiation dose 9.36 kJ m−2 d−1. The most sensitive indicators for UV-B stress were Fv/F0, Chl a content and P N. Significant P<0.05 alteration in these parameters was found indicating the drastic effect of UV-B radiation on P. dulcis.  相似文献

Long-term effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on flavonoid biosynthesis were investigated in Arabidopsis thaliana using the sun simulators of the Helmholtz Zentrum München. The plants, which are widely used as a model system, were grown (1) at high photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; 1,310 µmol m?2?s?1) and high biologically effective UV irradiation (UV-BBE 180 mW m?2) during a whole vegetative growth period. Under this irradiation regime, the levels of quercetin products were distinctively elevated with increasing UV-B irradiance. (2) Cultivation at high PAR (1,270 µmol m?2?s?1) and low UV-B (UV-BBE 25 mW m?2) resulted in somewhat lower levels of quercetin products compared to the high-UV-BBE conditions, and only a slight increase with increasing UV-B irradiance was observed. On the other hand, when the plants were grown (3) at low PAR (540 µmol m?2?s?1) and high UV-B (UV-BBE 180 mW m?2), the accumulation of quercetin products strongly increased from very low levels with increasing amounts of UV-B but the accumulation of kaempferol derivatives and sinapoyl glucose was less pronounced. We conclude (4) that the accumulation of quercetin products triggered by PAR leads to a basic UV protection that is further increased by UV-B radiation. Based on our data, (5) a combined effect of PAR and different spectral sections of UV radiation is satisfactorily described by a biological weighting function, which again emphasizes the additional role of UV-A (315–400 nm) in UV action on A. thaliana.  相似文献

The penetration of natural and artificial UV-BBE (Biologically Effective UV-B, Caldwell 1971) and PAR (400–700 nm) in a grass canopy with increasing LAI was followed during 2 months. Overall, the transmission of UV-BBE sunlight is significantly higher than of PAR sunlight. This is mainly due to the higher proportion of diffuse light in the UV-B. Under cloudy conditions no difference between UV-BBE and PAR could be found. Sun angle and intensity of the radiation were less important in determining the penetration of light. Artificial light penetrates much more through the canopy, resulting in higher irradiation levels in the lower part of the canopy, but a lower UV-BBE/PAR ratio (since UV-B transmittance of the leaves is lower). The UV-BBE/PAR ratio reaching the leaves was influenced by LAI, sun angle, percent diffuse light and leaf angle. The large differences in UV-BBE/PAR ratio per unit leaf area under natural and artificial light conditions are important in understanding the influence of UV-B on plants.  相似文献

Pea (Pisum sativum L., cv. Scinado) seedlings were exposed to low doses of ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 4.4 and 13.3 kJ m−2 d−1) or UV-C (0.1 and 0.3 kJ m−2 d−1) radiation for 14 d. Aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC), indoleacetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) contents were quantified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The accumulation of ACC upon irradiation was dose-dependent. ABA content was reduced and IAA content increased upon UV-C treatment whereas the UV-B doses used did not cause significant changes in ABA and IAA contents.  相似文献

Reaction of savanna plants from Botswana on UV-B radiation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The annual savanna grasses Chloris virgata (C4) and Tragus berteronianus (C3) and the tree Acacia tortilis were exposed in a greenhouse to elevated UV-B radiation (16.8 kJ m-2 d-1 UV-BBe) and to no UV-B and grown on a poor and a rich soil for one life-cycle (grasses) and one growing season (Acacia). UV-B radiation had no effect on biomass production and caryopses mass of both annual grasses. The longevity of the cotyledons of A. tortilis was shortened by 4 to 10 days under enhanced UV-B radiation, which also hampered the translocation of Fe, Mg and Mn from the cotyledons to the seedling and the retranslocation of Mn on both soil types and that of P on fertile soil out of senescent leaves. At the end of the growth period (190 days after germination), photosynthesis of UV-B radiated leaves of A. tortilis was significantly decreased and supported the tendency of decreased biomass of UV-B radiated plants. It is concluded that from the investigated savanna species the grasses are relatively well adapted to increased UV-B due to their actual exposure to high UV-B radiation under Botswana conditions, whereas saplings of A. tortilis are more sensitive to UV-B radiation.  相似文献

We assessed the effect of salinity on plant growth and leaf expansion rates, as well as the leaf life span and the dynamics of leaf production and mortality in seedlings of Avicennia germinans L. grown at 0, 170, 430, 680, and 940 mol m−3 NaCl. The relative growth rates (RGR) after 27 weeks reached a maximum (10.4 mg g−1 d−1) in 170 mol m−3 NaCl and decreased by 47 and 44% in plants grown at 680 and 940 mol m−3 NaCl. The relative leaf expansion rate (RLER) was maximal at 170 mol m−3 NaCl (120 cm m−2 d−1) and decreased by 57 and 52% in plants grown at 680 and 940 mol m−3 NaCl, respectively. In the same manner as RGR and RLER, the leaf production (P) and leaf death (D) decreased in 81 and 67% when salinity increased from 170 to 940 mol m−3 NaCl, respectively. Since the decrease in P with salinity was more pronounced than the decrease in D, the net accumulation of leaves per plant decreased with salinity. Additionally, an evident increase in annual mortality rates (λ) and death probability was observed with salinity. Leaf half-life (t 0.5) was 425 days in plants grown at 0 mol m−3 NaCl, and decreased to 75 days at 940 mol m−3 NaCl. Thus, increasing salinity caused an increase in mortality rate whereas production of new leaves and leaf longevity decreased and, finally, the leaf area was reduced.  相似文献

The possible ameliorative effects of quercetin on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] leaves exposed to UV-B radiation were conducted in greenhouse. The symmetrical leaves supplied with quercetin solution (0.2%, 1%) were exposed to UV-B radiation (0, 3.5, 6.5 kJ m−2 d−1). 0.2% quercetin ameliorated leaf photosynthesis, improved leaf water content (LWC), and decreased lipid oxidation. The unfavorable effect on photosynthetic parameter was displayed in 1% quercetin treatment. The effect of quercetin on phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity varied with the quercetin concentration, UV-B radiation intensity and leaf development. In the later development polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity was increased significantly by quercetin treatments. We suggested that quercetin with suitable concentration could serve as UV-B protective agent partly due to its antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

Near-isogenic lines of maize varying in their genes for flavonoid biosynthesis were utilized to examine the effects of foliar flavonoids and nutrient deficiency on maximum net photosynthetic rate (P N) and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (Fv/Fm) in response to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Plants with deficient (30 to 70 % lower N, K, Mn, Fe, and Zn) and sufficient nutrients were exposed to four irradiation regimes: (1) no UV-B with solar photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), (2) two day shift to ambient artificial UV-B, 8.2–9.5 kJ m−2 d−1 (21–25 mmol m−2 d−1); (3) continuous ambient artificial UV-B; (4) continuous solar UV-B in Hawaii 12–18 kJ m−2 d−1 (32–47 mmol m−2 d−1). The natural ratio of UVB: PAR (0.25–0.40) was maintained in the UV-B treatments. In the adequately fertilized plants, lines b and lc had higher contents of flavonoids and anthocyanins than did lines hi27 and dta. UV-B induced the accumulation of foliar flavonoids in lines hi27 and b, but not in the low flavonoid line dta or in the high flavonoid line lc. In plants grown on deficient relative to adequate nutrients, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents decreased by 30–40 and 40–50 %, respectively, and Chl a and Chl b contents decreased by 30 and 70 %, respectively. The UV-B treatments did not significantly affect P N and Fv/Fm in plants grown on sufficient nutrients, except in the low flavonoid lines dta and hi27 in which P N and Fv/Fm decreased by ∼15 %. P N, Fv/Fm, and stomatal conductance decreased markedly (20–30 %) in all lines exposed to UV-B when grown on low nutrients. The decrease in Fv/Fm was 10 % less in higher flavonoid lines b and lc. The photosynthetic apparatus of maize readily tolerated ambient UV-B in the tropics when plants were adequately fertilized. In contrast, ambient UV-B combined with nutrient deficiency significantly reduced photosynthesis in this C4 plant. Nutrient deficiency increased the susceptibility of maize to UV-B-induced photoinhibition in part by decreasing the contents of photoprotective compounds.  相似文献

Plants of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (cv. Stella) were grown in controlledconditions under three different irradiances of visible lightwith or without UV-B (280–320nm) radiation. The biologicallyeffective UV-B radiation (UV-BBE) was 6.17 kJ m–2 d–1,and simulated a c. 5% decrease in stratospheric ozone at 55.7?N,13.4?E. The photon flux densities of the photosyntheticallyactive radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm) were either 700 µmolm–2–1 (HL), 500, µmol m–2 s–1(ML) or 230 µmol m–2 s–1 PAR (LL). Under highlight (HL) conditions plus UV-B radiation, bean plants appearedmost resistant to the enhanced levels of UV-B radiation, andresponded only by increasing leaf thickness by c. 18%. A smallincrease in UV screening pigments was also observed. Both thelower irradiances (ML and LL) increased the sensitivity of theplants to UV-B radiation. Changes in leaf structure were alsoobserved. Photosystem II was inhibited under ML and LL togetherwith UV-B radiation, as determined by Chi fluorescence inductionand calculation of the fluorescence half-rise times. Leaf reflectivitymeasurements showed that the amount of PAR able to penetrateleaves of UV-B treated plants was reduced, and that a possiblecorrelation may exist between the reduced PAR levels, loss ofChi and lowered photosynthetic activity, especially for LL +UV-Bgrown plants, where surface reflection from leaves was highest.Changes in leaf chlorophyll content were mostly confined toplants grown under LL + UV-B, where a decrease of c. 20% wasfound. With regard to protective pigments (the carotenoids andUV screening pigments) plants subjected to different visiblelight conditions responded differently. Among the growth parametersmeasured, there was a substantial decrease in leaf area, particularlyunder LL + UV-B (c. 47% relative to controls), where leaf dryweight was also reduced by c. 25%. Along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula springtime ozone depletion events can lead to a two-fold increase in biologically effective UV-B radiation (UV-BBE) and summer air temperatures have risen ≈1.5°C during the past 50 years. We manipulated levels of UV radiation and temperature around Colobanthus quitensis (a cushion-forming plant, Caryophyllaceae) and Deschampsia antarctica (a tussock grass) along the Peninsula near Palmer Station for two field seasons. Ambient levels of UV were manipulated by placing filters that either transmitted UV (filter control), absorbed UV-B (reducing diurnal levels of UV-BBE by about 82%), or absorbed both UV-B and UV-A (reducing UV-BBE and UV-ABE by about 88 and 78%, respectively) on frames over naturally growing plants from November to March. Half the filters of each material completely surrounded the frames and raised diurnal and diel air temperatures around plants by an average of 2.3°C and 1.3°C, respectively. Reducing UV or warming had no effect on leaf concentrations of soluble UV-B absorbing compounds, UV-B absorbing surface waxes or chlorophylls. Warming had few effects on growth of either species over the first season. However, over the second field season warming improved growth of C. quitensis, leading to a 50% increase in leaf production (P < 0.10), a 26% increase in shoot production, and a 6% increase in foliar cover. In contrast, warming reduced growth of D. antarctica, leading to a 20% decline in leaf length, a 17% decline in leaf production (P < 0.10), and a 5% decline in foliar cover. Warming improved sexual reproduction in both species, primarily through faster development of reproductive structures and greater production of heavier seeds. Over the second field season, the percentage of reproductive structures that had reached the most developed (seed) stage in C. quitensis and D. antarctica was 20% and 15% higher, respectively, under warming. Capsules of C. quitensis produced 45% more seeds under warming and these seeds were 11% heavier. Growth of D. antarctica was improved when UV was reduced and these effects appeared to be cumulative over field seasons. Over the second season, tillers produced 55% more leaves and these leaves were 32% longer when UV-B was reduced. Tillers produced 137% more leaves that were 67% longer when both UV-B and UV-A were reduced. The effects of UV reduction were not as pronounced on C. quitensis, although over the second season cushions tended to be 17% larger and produce 21% more branches when UV-B was reduced, and tended to be 27% larger and produce 38% more branches when both UV-B and UV-A were reduced (P < 0.10). Few interactions were found between UV reduction and warming, although in the absence of warming, reducing UV led to slower development of reproductive structures in both species. The effects of warming and UV reduction were species specific and were often cumulative over the two field seasons, emphasizing the importance of long-term field manipulations in predicting the impacts of climate change. Ultraviolet-B radiation (biologically effective dose 2.6 kJ m−2 d−1) had negative influence on morphology and physiology of the young triticale plants. Plants exposed to UV-B were of lower height than control plants, their leaves were narrow, and the rate of net photosynthesis was decreased. The line RAH 336, which wax cover is lesser than that of traditional cultivar Magnat, was more susceptible to UV-B radiation, considering primary photosynthesis reactions, recorded by chlorophyll a fluorescence. An activation of protective mechanisms was observed: plants responded to UV-B by an increase of the content of UV-B absorbing compounds, and changes of antioxidant enzyme activities.  相似文献

Narrow-leaved plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), a perennial forb, flowers for virtually the full length of the growing season in temperate latitudes and as a result it is exposed to widely variable intensities of shortwave (UV-B) radiation. In order to determine effects of spring and summer levels of UV-B exposure on growth and development, representatives of 42 maternal families were grown for 85 days at 3.2 and 6.4 kJ m–2 day–1 BE300, levels corresponding to early spring and mid-summer in central Illinois. Impacts on early vegetative stages were most pronounced; early vegetative growth was decreased by higher levels of UV-B and both leaf angle (a measure of erectness) and leaf hair density were increased. At harvest, vegetative growth was significantly affected by higher levels of UV-B as well; the mass of senescent leaves and crown tissue were both decreased. Although exposure to higher levels of UV-B decreased inflorescence number by nearly 15%, it did not significantly alter reproductive biomass. Significant variation attributable to maternal families was present in nearly all measurements and the range of variation among families was wider than among UV-B treatments. A marginally significant (p=0.07) maternal family by UV-B interaction was found for the number of inflorescences, suggesting that, within populations of this plant, some small amount of genetic variation exists to allow for differential reproductive performance under a regime simulating spring and summer differences in UV-B exposure. For the most part, however, in this cosmopolitan species the level of adaptation to natural levels of variation in UV-B radiation does not differ dramatically among maternal families.  相似文献

Several studies have found the photosynthetic integration in clonal plants to response to resource heterogeneity, while little is known how it responses to heterogeneity of UV-B radiation. In this study, the effects of heterogeneous UV-B radiation (280–315 nm) on gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence of a clonal plant Trifolium repens were evaluated. Pairs of connected and severed ramets of the stoloniferous herb T. repens were grown under the homogeneity (both of ramets received only natural background radiation, ca. 0.6 kJ m−2 d−1) and heterogeneity of UV-B radiation (one of the ramet received only natural background radiation and the other was exposed to supplemental UV-B radiation, 2.54 kJ m−2 d−1) for seven days. Stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) and transpiration rate (E) showed no significant differences in connected and severed ramets under homogenous and heterogeneous UV-B radiation, however, net photosynthetic rate (P N) and maximum photosynthetic rate (P max) of ramets suffered from supplemental increased UV-B radiation and that of its connected sister ramet decreased significantly. Moreover, additive UV-B radiation resulted in a notable decrease of the minimal fluorescence of dark-adapted state (Fo), the electron transport rate (ETR) and photochemical quenching coefficient (qP) and an increase of nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) under supplemental UV-B radiation, while physiological connection reverse the results. In all, UV-B stressed ramets could benefit from unstressed ramets by physiological integration in photosynthetic efficiency, and clonal plants are able to optimize the efficiency to maintain their presence in less favourable sites.  相似文献
