Parthenocissus (the Virginia creeper genus, Vitaceae) consists of 13 species and shows a disjunct distribution between Asia and North America. We investigated the inflorescence structure, calyx morphology, appendages on the inner side of petals, leaf epidermis, pollen and seed characters throughout the genus. A combined phylogenetic analysis with 27 morphological and 4137 molecular characters was conducted and the result was largely congruent with that of the previous molecular work, but with higher resolution. The combined analysis identified two clades corresponding to the Asian and North American taxa. Parthenocissus feddei was resolved as closely related to the clade containing P. cuspidifera, P. heterophylla and P. semicordata. The four species share synapomorphies of having conspicuously raised veinlets, an obscurely five‐ (to eight‐) lobed calyx, appendages on the inner side of petals covering the entire length of anthers and foveolate pollen exine ornamentation. Within the Old World clade, the pentafoliolate species were weakly supported as more closely related to species with both simple and trifoliolate leaves. Furthermore, the ancestral states of tendril apices, inflorescence structure, appendages on the inner side of petals and exine ornamentation of pollen grains were reconstructed on the molecular strict consensus tree. The appendages on the inner side of petals and exine ornamentation of pollen grains were suggested to be important characters in the taxonomy of Parthenocissus, especially for species with trifoliolate leaves. A survey of morphological characters is carried out for Stapeliopsis . The information obtained from this is combined with molecular data from the plastid trn L-F DNA region and ITS1 of the nuclear encoded 18S−26S rRNA cistron, to obtain a hypothesis of the evolutionary relationships among the species. It is shown that Stapeliopsis is monophyletic in a combined molecular and morphological analysis. Stapeliopsis is sister to a clade containing Huernia , Orbea and Tromotriche . The species of Stapeliopsis group into two clades. One contains S. khamiesbergensis , S. neronis and S. urniflora , and this is highly supported. The remaining species fall into an unsupported clade in which S. exasperata is sister to the others. The genera Hermanschwartzia Plowes and Neopectinaria Plowes are rejected. It is shown that a synapomorphy for Stapeliopsis is the laterally flattened inner corona-lobes, which touch the anthers only at their bases. We investigated phylogenetic relationships among Otus scops owls from Socotra Island, the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa using molecular, vocalization and biometric data. The Socotra Scops Owl Otus senegalensis socotranus, currently treated as a subspecies of the African Scops Owl Otus senegalensis, is more closely related to the Oriental Scops Owl Otus sunia and to the endemic Seychelles Scops Owl Otus insularis. Considerable mitochondrial genetic distance and significant morphological differentiation from its two closest relatives, as well as its distinctive vocalizations compared with O. insularis, strongly support recognition of Socotra Scops Owl as a full species. Unexpectedly, two taxa from the Arabian Peninsula, Pallid Scops Owl Otus brucei and African Scops Owl Otus senegalensis pamelae, represent very distinct lineages; O. brucei is basal to a clade that includes taxa found in the Indo‐Malayan region and on Indian Ocean islands. In contrast, O. s. pamelae occupies a well‐supported basal position within a clade of continental Afro‐Palaearctic taxa. The uncorrected‐p genetic distance between O. s. pamelae and its closest relatives (other populations of senegalensis from mainland Africa) is c. 4%. As O. s. pamelae is also well differentiated phylogenetically, morphologically and vocally from O. s. senegalensis, we recommend its elevation to species status, as Otus pamelae. Among mainland African O. senegalensis subspecies, Ethiopian populations appear to represent the most divergent lineage, whereas other lineages from Somalia, Kenya and South Africa are poorly differentiated. The large genetic distance between the Ethiopian haplotype and other African haplotypes (3.2%) suggests that the Ethiopian Otus may represent a cryptic taxon, and we recommend that more individuals be sampled to assess the taxonomic status of this population.  相似文献

Abstract Pupae and mature larvae of the Australian ceratocanthid beetle, Cyphopisthes descarpentriesi Paulian 1977, are described and extensively illustrated. This is the sixth species of the family for which immature stages are known and the first from the Australian region. Unlike other ceratocanthid larvae described before, those of Cyphopisthes Gestro lack stridulatory teeth on the middle and hind legs and any trace of a frontoclypeal suture on the cranium. Reduced one-segmented labial palpi in Cyphopisthes are unique in Scarabaeoidea. Monophyly of the family is not corroborated by larval characters. Absence of spiracular closing apparatus in larvae is reported in the family for the first time. Like pupae of Ceratocanthus White and Germarostes Paulian, those of Cyphopisthes have thoracic projections, but their shape and location are different. Spiracles are found on abdominal segments 2−4 of pupa; that on segment 2 differs in colour and location from the others.  相似文献

A phenetic study ofQuercus acutifolia andQ. conspersa (Fagaceae) is carried out. The study was based on morphological characters, and included cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The results revealed that the characters employed so far to separateQuercus acutifolia andQ. conspersa seem to be quite unreliable. Nevertheless, both species can still be recognized as taxonomically different entities, although mostly based on characters of leaf margins. We propose that the individuals that have leaves with dentate-aristate margins correspond toQ. acutifolia, whereas those that have leaves with entire and not dentate-aristate margins belong toQ. conspersa.  相似文献

The comparative floral ontogeny of five species belonging to the primuloid clade of the Ericales are investigated, viz. Maesa japonica, M. perlarius, Aegiceras corniculatum, Embelia laeta and E. ribes. All five species basically show 2/5-spiral phyllotaxis of the sepal primordia, although with some minor modification (particularly in Embelia, where the flowers are predominantly tetramerous). The phyllotaxis of the common petal-stamen primordia is also 2/5-spiral in the Maesa and Aegiceras species investigated, but appears to be unidirectional in Embelia. All five species develop common petal-stamen primordia in which the resultant petal primordia are larger than the stamen primordia, and in which the stamens develop proximally on the adaxial flank of the common primordia. Growth of the placenta in Maesa and Aegiceras partially embeds the ovules, but in Embelia the ovules are almost fully immersed in placental tissue at maturity. A comprehensive review of all previously published studies of floral ontogeny of primuloid genera is presented, and the phylogenetic significance of the variation between genera is evaluated with reference to recently published cladograms.  相似文献

The current sectional classification of the genus Aeschynanthus Jack, essentially based on seed morphology, presents some problems of species placement. A comparative SEM survey of seed and seed appendages was undertaken in order to assess the value of this classification. Seeds of 99 taxa (that is about two‐thirds of the estimated total) were examined and found to fall into two types, A and B. Type A has spiral testa cell orientation, papillae formed from a single cell and short smooth appendages. Type B is recognized by the straight orientation of the testa cells, combined with the presence of papillae formed from the raised ends of two adjacent cells on the long hair‐like appendages and usually on the testa. Only six of the investigated species did not fall into either category. Three have straight testa cell orientation combined with single‐cell papillae and short smooth appendages; the papillae and appendage characters place them in type A. Three have spiral testa cell orientation and short smooth appendages but the testa cells have slightly raised ends; these are also placed in Type A. The three subtypes in Type A are equivalent to the sections Haplotrichium s.s., Microtrichium and Aeschynanthus, but the divisions are less clear than those within Type B. However, other morphological characters support sectional separation. Type B subdivides into three: two subtypes equivalent to sections Polytrichium and Diplotrichium, and a third encompassing section Xanthanthos together with part of the current sect. Haplotrichium, and here referred to as sect. X. There is sufficient morphological correlation with seed type to make the sectional position of many species clear without recourse to seed, particularly in sects Polytrichium, Diplotrichium, Haplotrichium S.S. and Aeschynanthus. There is strong correlation between seed type and geographical distribution. Sects. Microtrichium and Aeschynanthus, with Type A seed, are essentially Malesian. Groups with Type B seed are largely confined to mainland south and south‐east Asia, except for sect. Polytrichium which is more widespread, possibly due to the greater effectiveness of a coma of hairs in wind dispersal. It is suggested that Type A seed, probably sect. Microtrichium, is the least determined and Type B sect. Polytrichium the most derived seed type. Based on these findings a revised key to the sections is provided.  相似文献

Morphological and anatomical features (including wood anatomy and pollen morphology) of the small neotropical genusPagameopsis (Rubiaceae-Rubioideae) are discussed and illustrated. The fused ovaries, fenestrate corolla tube, basally attached anther filaments, and absence of raphides are especially noteworthy.Pagameopsis is definitely not a member of the Psychotrieae because of significant differences in wood anatomy and gynoecial and fruit structure. A close affinity with Gaertnereae seems doubtful for similar reasons. The taxonomic affinities ofPagameopsis remain obscure. The genus shows similarities with several taxa of the Rubioideae, such as Coccocypseleae, Morindeae, Hedyotideae, andMetabolos. The absence of raphides, on the other hand, makes a position in the Rubioideae doubtful.  相似文献

External and internal head structures of Caurinus dectes were examined and described in detail. The features are compared to conditions found in other groups of Antliophora. Caurinus is obviously crucial for the reconstruction of the mecopteran and antliophoran groundplan. It displays a remarkable series of plesiomorphic character states such as a complete clypeolabral suture, the presence of M. hypopharyngomandibularis (M. 13) and M. frontohypopharyngalis (M. 41), a subdivided clypeus, a short head without rostrum, a dorsal tentorial arm attached to the head capsule, the absence of a cranial dilator of the antenna, and large mandibles with a well developed apical tooth, two distinct subapical teeth, and a basal molar part. The first three plesiomorphic features render potential autapomorphies of Mecoptera in the traditional sense invalid. Autapomorphies of Caurinus are the distinctly flattened labrum, the absence of the labroepipharyngeal muscle, the very large size of M. 13, the strongly enlarged penultimate palpomeres, the partition of M. 41, the very strongly developed precerebral sucking chamber, strongly curved optic lobes, the presence of a large protocerebral extension in the genal region and deep posterior excavations of the protocerebrum. The maxillolabial plate, the absence of cardines as separate structures, the reduction of ocelli, and the origin of maxillary palp muscles on a median ridge or area of the maxillolabial plate are likely autapomorphies of Boreidae. Another potential autapomorphy of the family is the presence of longitudinal furrows on the mandibles. However, they are absent in Boreus. The thick strongly sclerotised, median ridge of the maxillolabial plate, the missing retractibility of the prementum, the absence of extrinsic labial muscles, and the presence of a median ridge on the prepharyngeal roof suggest a clade Boreus + Hesperoboreus. The origin of extrinsic maxillary muscles from the clypeus has probably evolved independently in Boreus and Hesperoboreus, and in Panorpa, respectively. The absence of M. craniolacinialis and the presence of a row of several subapical mandibular teeth are autapomorphies of Boreus. The presence of a specific intrinsic muscle of the salivary duct and a membranous galea enclosing the labrum and mandibular base are derived features shared by Boreidae and Pistillifera (galea absent in Nannochorista, Siphonaptera and Diptera). The loss of M. frontolabralis (M. 8) is a potential apomorphy of Mecoptera incl. Siphonaptera. A sister group relationship between Boreidae and Siphonaptera is not supported by characters of the adult head. Head structures of Siphonaptera are extremely modified in correlation with ectoparasitic habits.  相似文献

The tropical Indo-Pacific genus Excoecaria L. (Euphorbiaceae) has several closely related species in Australia whose taxonomic relationships are unclear. The most widely reported species in Australia is the mangrove species Excoecaria agallocha L. (type species), whose taxonomic and geographic limits are difficult to define from its closely related species or sub-species. Two additional taxa have also been described but not clearly differentiated from the type species: Excoecaria dallachyana Baillon and Excoecaria ovalis Endl. This project aimed to determine the taxonomic relationships of the Australian Excoecaria species using both leaf morphological data and DNA sequence data from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal genes. The nucleotide differences in the examined ITS1 region show that E. agallocha from eastern Australia and E. ovalis from Western Australia respectively, are genetically uniform within species but differ from each other consistently, thus supporting species status. The leaf morphological data also support this view: single factor analysis of variance consistently separated E. ovalis from E. agallocha on the basis of leaf width, leaf length and length of petiole. In contrast, E. ovalis from the Gulf of Carpentaria differs only slightly from E. ovalis in Western Australia, but no evidence was found to suggest any leaf morphological differentiation within this species. The analysis also suggests that E. dallachyana is not closely related to either mangrove species E. agallocha or E. ovalis, despite superficial morphological similarities.  相似文献

16 morphological characters were assessed in 300 plants sampled from 27 populations ofPolygonum aviculare sensu lato representative of the whole ecological range of the species in Belgium. The three multivariate treatments performed, namely principal component analysis, cluster analysis and discriminant analysis provide evidence thatP. aviculare can be divided in 4 units, roughly corresponding to the four taxa recognized byChrtek. However, the results point out that subsp.monspeliense and subsp.calcatum should be included at the varietal rank within respectively subsp.aviculare (=P. heterophyllum) and subsp.aequale (=P. arenastrum) as defined byLindman. Fruit dimensions, fruit shape and tepal length are the most discriminant characters for separating the four taxa, while several other characters are discriminant at the population level only. The evolutionary significance of the variation pattern of the whole complex is discussed in terms of life history differentiation and ecological specialization.  相似文献

Investigation of chromosome numbers of allAzolla species, and for the first time of hybrids, has been undertaken. Removal of wax from the leaf surface proved invaluable in achieving clear cytological preparations and providing unambiguous chromosome numbers. In contrast to previous records, the speciesA. pinnata, A. filiculoides, A. filiculoides var.rubra, A. caroliniana, A. microphylla, andA. mexicana were found to be 2n=44, andA. nilotica to be 2n=52. Several triploids (2n=66) and one tetraploid (2n=88) were identified. No geographical pattern could be observed in the distribution of triploids which probably derive from the function of unreduced gametes. The chromosome number of hybrids occasionally deviates from the diploid chromosome number (2n=44). The small chromosome size limits karyotypic analysis and only differences in overall chromosome size can be observed. Taxonomic implications of chromosome numbers and sizes are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we present a phylogeny based on a study of the general morphology of 61 of the ca. 80 species ofDuguetia. Analyses were performed with PAUP. The resulting phylogeny is compared with the classification ofDuguetia as suggested byFries (1934, 1937, 1939, 1959). The results are partly corresponding withFries's classification. SectionAlcmene includingD. rionegrensis, and sects.Geanthemum, Synsepalantha, andCalothrix withoutD. uniflora, are upheld by this analysis. It is concluded that sect.Xylopipetalum should be united with sect.Duguetia. Before other taxonomic decisions at the section level can be made, more solid data must be available. 该研究在形态学观察以及统计学分析的基础上,深入研究了山矾科中原氏山矾复合体的叶片形态学结构。结果表明:叶片质地在整个复合体中可分为革质、纸质2种类型,叶片大小变异幅度较大,除中原氏山矾(Symplocos kawakamii)、棱角山矾(S.tetragona)、蒙自山矾(S.henryi)均与其他种差异显著外,其余种均属于连续过度,叶片分形可以初步区分该复合体植物。该研究结果为中原氏山矾复合体的进一步研究提供了依据,对复合体的分类处理具有一定的分类学意义。  相似文献

External and internal head structures of adults of Karoophasma sp. were examined and described. The results are compared with conditions found in other representatives of Mantophasmatodea and members of other lower neopteran groups. The X-shaped apodeme of the frons, the unpigmented oval area enclosed by apical branches of the anterior tentorial arms, the oval sclerotisation at the base of the labrum, the sclerotized rounded apical part of the galea, and the loss of M. labroepipharyngalis are probably autapomorphic for Mantophasmatodea. Plesiomorphic features (groundplan of Neoptera) are the orthognathous condition, the absence of parietal ridges, the absence of a gula, the absence of a 'perforation of the corpotentorium', the multisegmented antennae inserted between the compound eyes, the general arrangement of the mouthparts, the shape and composition of the maxillae and labium, and the nearly complete set of muscles. The presence of a transverse muscle connecting the antennal ampullae is a potential synapomorphy of Orthoptera, Phasmatodea and Dictyoptera. Character states suggesting affinities with Grylloblattodea are the absence of ocelli, the elongation of the corpotentorium, and the very similar mandibles with widely separated bases and completely reduced molae. Whether predacious habits are a synapomorphic feature of Mantophasmatodea and Grylloblattodea is uncertain. The retained orthognathous condition in Mantophasmatodea and Mantodea is likely related with different specialized preying techniques in both groups, i.e. rapid forward pushes of the head–prothorax complex, and the use of raptorial legs, respectively.  相似文献
