Encysted acanthocephalans belonging to the genus Centrorhynchus were found in the body cavities of Sorex araneus (common shrew) and Sorex minutus (pygmy shrew) from Boxworth, Cambridgeshire, U.K. Fifty percent of the male S. araneus and 67% of the male S. minutus examined were found to be infected, with the mean intensity (+/-SD) being 54.3 +/- 91.3 and 14.7 +/- 18.4, respectively. The species of Centrorhynchus in the shrews may be Centrorhynchus aluconis, which is distributed widely in tawny owls, Strix aluco, in the United Kingdom. Shrews appear to serve as paratenic hosts for C. aluconis.  相似文献

Pygmy shrews were snap-trapped over one year in grassland and occasionally in other habitats. The bodies yielded data on tooth-wear, body and skull dimensions, moulting, reproduction, food and parasites. The shrews appeared equally abundant in grassland and woodland and were more active in the day. The breeding season, population turnover, and winter body and skull regression were similar to those of other Sorex species. However, cranial regression was more marked: this may be associated with the animal's exceptionally small size. Moulting extended in autumn from August to November, and in spring from March to May, the latter in males starting earlier and perhaps lasting longer. Simultaneous and patch moults were also recorded. The litter size dropped as the breeding season progressed. The main foods were beetles, woodlice, Diptera and insect larvae; all except Diptera were eaten consistently over the year. There was a wide variety of other foods, many showing seasonal fluctuations. The commonest flea was Doratopsylla dasycnema. Palaeopsylla soricis, a common shrew-flea, widespread in the British Isles, is at least locally absent. Pygmy shrews may be the principal host of Hystrichopsylla talpae in Ireland. Rates of infestation by the trematodes and one cestode appeared to increase as the hosts aged. The tapeworm Hymenolepis scutigera, however, was commonest in juveniles. It is postulated that Doratopsylla dasycnema is its intermediate host, allowing infection of young before they leave the nest. Sorex araneus is sympatric with Sorex minutus over most of its range, but not in Ireland. In its absence, S. minutus may have been able to exploit its niche, the apparent abundance of the latter in woodland and wider variety of food consumed providing grounds for such a hypothesis.  相似文献

Throughout most of its range in western Europe, the Pigmy shrew Sorex minutus is sympatricwith the Common shrew Sorex araneus but greatly outnumbered by it. This makes it difficult to explain the presence of the Pigmy shrew, in the absence of its congener, in Ireland. A limited pitfall trapping exercise in England has shown that in moorland on deep peat, the Pigmy shrew may in fact outnumber the Common shrew. Reference to the literature on the ecology of the two shrews shows that this result is readily explained by existing knowledge of their diet; earthworms are a major prey for Common shrews and are absent from waterlogged, acidic, peats. Further, evidence on the nature of the possible land bridge from Scotland to Ireland suggests that it was at best low-lying, and probably partly flooded. By analogy with moorland, such a land bridge might have been suitable for Pigmy shrews but not for Common shrews.  相似文献

The status of the pygmy shrew ( Sorex minutus L.) as a native or an introduced species in Ireland has been subject to much debate. To examine this and other aspects of the colonization history of the Irish pygmy shrew, genetic variation was determined in 247 pygmy shrews collected throughout Ireland, using mitochondrial control region sequences and five polymorphic microsatellite loci. Genetic diversity was low for both types of marker. The median-joining network for control region sequences was star-like, suggesting that the colonization of Ireland involved a small number of founders and rapid population expansion thereafter; this was supported by other statistics. Molecular dating with both mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite data is consistent with a human introduction. This would have been several thousand years ago; a recent colonization within historical times can be ruled out. Background  

The molecular forms of Anopheles gambiae are undergoing speciation. They are characterized by a strong assortative mating and they display partial habitat segregation. The M form is mostly found in flooded/irrigated areas whereas the S form dominates in the surrounding areas, but the ecological factors that shape this habitat segregation are not known. Resource competition has been demonstrated between species undergoing divergent selection, but resource competition is not the only factor that can lead to divergence.  相似文献

The helminth fauna of shrews (Sores araneus, S. caecutiens, S. minutus, S. minutissimus) from the Karelian coast and islands of the Kandalaksha nature reserve was studied. 18 helminth species belonging to 3 taxonomic groups, Trematoda (3), Cestoda (8), and Nematoda (7) were found. The main body of the helminth fauna of shrews is represented by the nematodes species Longistriata codrus, L. didas, and the cestode species Ditestolepis diaphana. Inhabiting of shrews in the insular localities leads to the decrease of the species diversity and the abundance of their helminths. The distribution ranges of the shrew parasites have been outlined more accurately.  相似文献

Three of the six species of shrew in Finland, Sorex araneus, S. caecutiens, and S. minutus , are common on the mainland and widespread on islands in lakes. The islands range from 0.01 to 500 ha in area, and from 10 to 3000 m in isolation (distance from the mainland). The species-area relationship, the lack of importance of habitat diversity, the increasing frequency of unoccupied small islands with isolation, and direct observations of small populations, all suggest that populations on small islands have a high extinction rate. Demographic stochasticity is the main cause of extinctions in the superior competitor, S. araneus , which occurs consistently on islands greater than 2 ha. The small species, S. caecutiens and S. minutus , are more sensitive to environmental stochasticity than is S. araneus , and are inferior to it in interspecific competition; these factors probably contribute to the absence of the small species from many islands tens of hectares in area. Frequent colonization of islands less than 500 m from the mainland is indicated by large numbers of shrews trapped from tiny islets where breeding is not possible, by increasing epigenetic divergence of island populations with isolation, and by observations of dispersal to and colonization of islands. Dispersal ability decreases with decreasing individual size, which may partly explain the absence of the small shrews from many relatively large islands. The shrew populations persist in a dynamic equilibrium on the islands. Epigenetic morphological variation is a useful tool in ecological studies of island populations.  相似文献

Disruptive selection mediated by predation on aquatic immature stages has been proposed as a major force driving ecological divergence and fostering speciation between the M and S molecular forms of the African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae. In the dry savannahs of West Africa where both molecular forms co-occur, the S form thrives in temporary pools filled with rainwater, whereas the M form preferentially breeds in permanent freshwater habitats where predator pressure is higher. Here, we explored the proximal mechanisms by which predation may contribute to habitat segregation between molecular forms using progeny of female mosquitoes captured in Burkina Faso. We show that the S form suffers higher predation rates than the M form when simultaneously exposed to the widespread predator, Anisops jaczewskii in an experimental arena. Furthermore, behavioral plasticity induced by exposure to the predator was observed in the M form, but not in the S form, and may partially explain its habitat use and ecological divergence from the S form. We discuss the role of adaptive phenotypic plasticity in allowing successful colonization of a new ecological niche by the M form and highlight further research areas that need to be addressed for a better understanding of the ultimate mechanisms underlying ecological speciation in this pest of major medical importance.  相似文献

The morphometrics and reproduction of shrews (Sorex araneus, S. minutus, S. alpinus) was studied in Slovakia. Significant differences in weight, body length and tail length were recorded in adult and subadult shrews. Adult individuals and males had higher mean somatometric values (apart from tail length of subadults). The hind foot length was the least variable characteristic, which can be considered as the most stable taxonomic somatic characteristic of shrews. Weight and body length varied considerably. Values of somatic characteristics in S. araneus and S. minutus increased with increasing altitude, apart from hind foot length in S. araneus, which decreased with increasing altitude. The values of somatic characteristics declined with increasing continentality, but tail length gradually increased in the direction west — east at the highland level. Sorex minutus was characterized by the greatest reproductive activity (length of reproductive cycle April–October, average number of embryos 6.97). The lowest reproductive activity was observed in S. alpinus (average number of embryos 5.72). The mating season of S. araneus began at the end of March and ended in August with an average number of embryos of 6.12.  相似文献

One of the hypotheses explaining preferential transmission of metacentrics among simple Robertsonian (Rb) heterozygotes of the common shrew (Sorex araneus L.) invokes the existence of meiotic drive. Thus far, evidence that metacentrics are favoured at meiosis has been obtained indirectly, on the basis of crosses made under controlled conditions. The aim of the present work was to test the hypothesis in a direct study. We analysed products of chromosome segregation among 12 simple heterozygote male subjects from a wild population, with regard to jl, io, nr and mn Rb fusions. We were able to demonstrate significant segregation distortion in favour of all four metacentrics. The level of preferential segregation was independent either of the composition of chromosome arms or the dimensions of metacentrics. We also found that X chromosomes were favoured over Y1Y2 chromosomes during segregation. We discuss the role of meiotic drive in the evolutionary success of metacentric chromosomes in S. araneus, as well as in the emergence of post-hybridization modifications in the zones of contact between races.  相似文献

Small mammals were trapped on five islands for short periods during the summers of 1964 and 1965, with the following results:
Handa: Rattus norvegicus only, probably no other species present.
Muck: Sorex araneus, S. minutus, Apodemus sylvaticus and Microtus agrestis; R. norvegicus also present.
Pabay: S. minutus and Neomys fodiens ; probably no other species present.
Scalpay: S. araneus, S. minutus and M. agrestis.
Soay: S. araneus and S. minutus ; rodents almost certainly absent.

A population of the Australian mudskipper, Periophthalmus minutus, was found to inhabit mudflat that remained uncovered by tide for more than 20 days in some neap tides. During these prolonged emersion periods, P. minutus retreated into burrows containing little water, with a highest recorded salinity of 84 ± 7.4 psu (practical salinity unit). To explore the mechanical basis for this salinity tolerance in P. minutus, we determined the densities of mitochondria-rich cells (MRCs) in the inner and outer opercula and the pectoral fin skin, in comparison with P. novaeguineaensis, from an adjacent lower intertidal habitat, and studied morphological responses of MRCs to exposure to freshwater (FW), and 100% (34-35 psu) and 200% seawater (SW). Periophthalmus minutus showed a higher density of MRCs in the inner operculum (3365 ± 821 cells mm(-2)) than in the pectoral fin skin (1428 ± 161) or the outer operculum (1100 ± 986), all of which were higher than the MRC densities in p. novaeguineaensis. No mortality occurred in 100% or 200% SW, but half of the fish died within four days in FW. Neither 200% SW nor FW exposure affected MRC density. Transfer to 200% SW doubled MRC size after 9-14 days with no change in the proportion of MRCs with apical pits or plasma sodium concentration. In contrast, transfer to FW resulted in a rapid closing of pits and a significant reduction in plasma sodium concentration. These results suggest that P. minutus has evolved morphological and physiological mechanisms to withstand hypersaline conditions that they may encounter in their habitat.  相似文献

The habitat preferences of small rodents were studied by live trapping methods at Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire, a relict area of East Anglian fenland. The study sites were chosen to cover areas of managed fields, dominated by sedge ( Cladium mwiscus ) or by litter (grasses with sedges); the adjacent fen carr "bush growth"; and an area of unmanaged sedge. Clethrionomys glareolus is the commonest rodent species, occurring at relatively high densities, and closely associated with sedge growth. It is ubiquitous in unmanaged sedge but in managed sedge and litter field areas there is a marked preference for the field/fen carr transition where sedge growth is not cut. Thick sedge seems to afford the optimum habitat for this species probably because of the three-dimensional vegetation structure which provides dense ground cover with a natural thatch of dead leaves; this decays only slowly, even in succeeding fen carr. Sedge fields provide a less stable habitat and recolonization of a harvested field by Clethrionomys only began after eight months of sedge regrowth. Micromys minutus are caught only in sedge and litter. Apodemus sylvaticus seem to show no marked habitat preference but there are some data which suggest that high Clethrionomys densities can affect Apodemus distributions locally. Microtus agrestis prefers grassy patches within sedge fields; trap success points tending to be associated with the presence of Calamagrostis canescens. Microtus avoids fen carr and unmanaged sedge and is generally caught more often in litter fields than in sedge fields; however, this preference seems to disappear at the end of the Clethrionomys breeding season. During flooding, Clethrionomys found refuge in the dense sedge and sedge/carr transition habitats; prolonged flooding caused a decline in numbers of Clethrionomys and the elimination of Microtus , while the distribution of Apodemus was apparently unaffected.  相似文献

Microsatellite and mtDNA markers have been used to identify two pairs of cryptic species Sorex araneus L. (Sorex satunini Ogn.) and Sorex minutus L. (S. volnuchini Ogn.). The new data were obtained on the distribution of these species on the plain between the Don and Kuban rivers. The shrew S. volnuchini and Caucasian mole are distributed on the plain areas up to the Eya River. The endemic species of the Caucasus, the shrews S. satunini and S. volnuchini, are widely distributed across the valleys alongside small streams on the steppe plain. Both species are most abundant on thick grasslands, bushy scrub, and deciduous woodlands. They don??t show any clear differences in habitat preferences.  相似文献

National field surveys for otters were carried out between 1977 and 1981. The species is apparently absent from large areas of England, although healthy populations still occur in the south-west. In many other areas, populations are isolated and fragmented and there is some evidence for continuing declines. In Wales the otter is rare or absent from the south and parts of the north. Healthy populations are present in the Highland Region of Scotland, on the north and west coasts and in the islands but there is evidence of a decline in the south and east-central lowlands. Otters are widespread and common in Ireland which sustains the best of the known populations in Europe.
Pollution by pesticides probably caused the initial rapid decline of the species but habitat destruction is increasingly important and where habitat is poor, human disturbance assumes greater significance. There is no evidence of competition with mink. The otter is now a protected species but if it is to recover some of its former range, remaining habitat must be retained.
While otter populations have decreased over much of northern Europe, the animal survives, albeit somewhat precariously, in a few southern parts of the continent.  相似文献

The diets of three species of shrew (Neomys fodiens, Sorex araneus and S. minutus) living sympatrically in an area of water-cress beds were investigated over a two-year period by faecal analysis of live-trapped animals. Thirty-eight different prey types were identified in the diet of N. fodiens , 25 in the diet of S. araneus and 18 in S. minutus. The most important prey items of N. fodiens in all months were freshwater crustaceans and cased trichopteran larvae. Other important items were terrestrial gastropods, coleopterans and dipterans. Neomys fodiens foraged underwater throughout the year and 33–67% of its prey were of aquatic origin. Major prey items of S. araneus throughout the year were lumbricids, terrestrial gastropods and coleopterans. Araneids, isopods and coleopterans were the dominant dietary items of S. minutus. All terrestrial prey items were taken in greater proportions by S. araneus and S. minutus than by N. fodiens , excepting lumbricids which were never eaten by S. minutus. Dietary overlap was greatest between S. araneus and S. minutus at 57%, followed by N. fodiens and S. araneus (44%) and least similar were N. fodiens and S. minutus (36%).  相似文献

During the past century, the upland breeding areas of Hen Harriers in Ireland have been extensively afforested. There is no evidence that this species avoids breeding in heavily forested landscapes and, indeed, young commercial forests in their second rotation are often selected as nest‐sites. However, Hen Harriers have coexisted with these forested areas for only a few decades and it is possible that such landscapes are suboptimal. We examined the relationship between breeding success and habitat using a dataset spanning three years and four study areas in the south and west of Ireland. We assessed whether nest success and fledged brood size were related to habitat type, both at the nest‐site and in the surrounding landscape. Neither measure of breeding productivity was related to total forest cover or to percentage cover of closed canopy forest in the landscape. However, in a subset of areas, high cover of second‐rotation pre‐thicket (young forests planted on land from which a first rotation has already been harvested) in the surrounding landscape was associated with low levels of breeding success. This may be due to factors related to predation, disturbance or prey availability. The fact that second‐rotation pre‐thicket is a preferred habitat for nesting in Ireland suggests that Hen Harriers may be making suboptimal decisions in the landscapes available to them.  相似文献

Tick-borne diseases present a major threat to both human and livestock health throughout Europe. The risk of infection is directly related to the presence of its vector. Thereby it is important to know their distribution, which is strongly associated with environmental factors: the presence and availability of a suitable habitat, of a suitable climate and of hosts. The present study models the habitat suitability for Ixodes ricinus in Ireland, where data on tick distribution are scarce. Tick habitat suitability was estimated at a coarse scale (10 km) with a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method according to four different scenarios (depending on the variables used and on the weights granted to each of them). The western part of Ireland and the Wicklow mountains in the East were estimated to be the most suitable areas for I. ricinus in the island. There was a good level of agreement between results from the MCDA and recorded tick presence. The different scenarios did not affect the spatial outputs substantially. The current study suggests that tick habitat suitability can be mapped accurately at a coarse scale in a data-scarce context using knowledge-based methods. It can serve as a guideline for future countrywide sampling that would help to determine local risk of tick presence and refining knowledge on tick habitat suitability in Ireland.  相似文献

Hen Harriers Circus cyaneus are threatened across much of their range and their conservation requires appropriate habitat management. The locations of 148 Hen Harrier nests found in the Republic of Ireland during national breeding surveys in 2000 and 2005 were used to assess nest-site selection. The distribution of these nests was compared to distributions of randomly located points to investigate selection at the scale of the nest-site and landscape. The main nesting habitats selected were pre-thicket stage of first and, particularly, second rotation plantations, mostly of exotic conifers. There was no evidence that the area of post-closure plantations negatively affected Hen Harrier nest distribution. There was a positive correlation across study areas between changes in numbers of Hen Harrier nests between 2000 and 2005 and changes in the area of pre-thicket second rotation plantations over the same period. The overall effect of plantation forests on breeding Hen Harriers in Ireland therefore appears to be positive. However, this study did not consider the effects of plantation habitats on breeding success. Improved grassland was strongly avoided as a nesting habitat. Furthermore, after controlling for the influence of nesting habitat on nest location, landscapes with a high percentage cover of improved grassland were also avoided. Further agricultural intensification of grassland in areas where Hen Harriers breed is likely to have a negative impact on this species. These results are required for the development of management strategies for the conservation of this species.  相似文献
