Three hundred and twenty-three fish of six species (salmonids and coregonids) from four locations on the eastern coast of Labrador were examined for metazoan parasites, using conventional parasitological techniques. Twenty-four genera of parasites were recovered (3 of Monogenea, 8 of Digenea, 5 of Cestoda, 5 of Nematoda, 1 of Acanthocephala, 2 of parasitic Copepoda). Fifty-one new host records were noted. Fourteen genera of parasites were noted in Salmo salar L., while Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill) contained 21 genera; S. namaycush (Walbaum,) 12 genera; S. alpinus (L.), 16 genera: Coregonus clupeaformis (Mitchill), 11 genera; Prosopium cylindraceum (Pallas), 11 genera. It was found that the parasite burden of the various fish species examined was not homogeneous when sample areas and sex of the fish was considered. An increase in the number of parasite species per infected host with age was seen in the case of Salmo salar, Salvelinus fontinalis, S. namaycush, S. alpinus. In Coregonus clupeaformis and Prosopium cylindraceum no such correlation was seen, this difference being related to the ecology of the fish. The parasitofauna of the various salmonid species examined was not homogeneous, significant differences being noted in the number of certain species infected with specific parasites. Significant differences were also noted in the parasite burden of the Salmonidae when compared with the Coregonidae. Food items recovered from the fish autopsied were noted.  相似文献

Eighty stocked lake trout Salvelinus namaycush (Salmonidae), collected from 2 locations in Lake Huron in May 1995, were examined for parasites. The parasite fauna of this top predator in Lake Huron was characterized by only 6 helminth species. Echinorhynchus salmonis infected all lake trout with a mean intensity of 163.9. The intensity of this acanthocephalan species significantly increased with host length and weight. Eubothrium salvelini infected 78 lake trout with a maximum number of 81 scoleces counted. Diplostomum sp., Cyathocephalus truncatus, Capillaria salvelini, and Neoechinorhynchus sp. infrequently infected lake trout. The low parasite species richness in these lake trout is believed to be due to their large size at stocking and to the loss of historical enzootic host-parasite relationships that followed the absence of this fish species in Lake Huron for 26 yr.  相似文献

The ribosomal RNA cistrons of three species of trout: Salvelinus namaycush (lake trout), Salvelinus fontinalis (brook trout), and Salmo gairdneri (rainbow trout) were examined by Southern blot analysis of genomic DNA. The repeat length of the cistron of S. namaycush is 26 kb. A repeat-length polymorphism was observed in some of the individual fish examined. These individuals showed 24-kb repeats. In some individuals both forms were present. The restriction maps of the transcribed regions of all three species were similar and showed a site homology with other vertebrate ribosomal RNA genes. Interspecific comparison showed restriction-site differences within the spacer regions examined. A restriction-site polymorphism within the 28 S gene was observed in S. fontinalis. The rDNA of S. namaycush liver showed a high degree of methylation as determined by digestion with the restriction endonucleases MspI and HpaII.  相似文献

The factors that determine parasite assemblages among the clariid fishes of Lake Victoria, Tanzania were studied between August 2003 and February 2005. Six hundred and fifty-six fish belonging to seven species were necropsied and examined for parasites, from which 31 species of metazoan parasites were recorded. The community was dominated by the nematodes both in species and numbers. Most species were generalists with only two trematodes, Diplostomum mashonense and Tylodelphys species, being specialists of Clarias gariepinus. Ten species were considered core and predictable. Parasite species richness, number of individuals per host and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices were generally high. At the compound community level, a mean number of 7.8 parasites were shared among different species of fish and the maximum number of parasites species per fish at the infracommunity level was seven. Levels of similarity in parasite species richness at the component community level ranged from 29.6 to 61.5%. The study concludes that parasite communities in clariid fishes of Lake Victoria are structured by ecological factors. At the infracommunity level, host size, diet and vagility promoted a richer parasite community. At the compound level, two factors were crucial, namely the intermixing of the waters in the lake and the predominant and mobile C. gariepinus.  相似文献

Data on the parasite diversity in Salmonidae fish parr from different parts of the Utsjoki River obtained during 1993-1995 and 2006-2007 are presented. Three fish species, Salmo salar L., S. truttae L., and Salvelinus alpinus L., were examined on the presence of helminthes. Twenty species of salmon parasites were found, the majority of which are the parasites with complicated life cycles. Infusorians C apriniana piscium, myxosporidia Chloromyxum januaricus and Myxobolus neurobius, metacercaria of the genera Diplostomum and Apatemon, and the nematode Raphidascaris acus larvae were the most numerous in salmon parasite fauna. Brown trout had the most number of specific parasite species, whereas char was infested by protozoan parasites only.  相似文献

A total of 668 specimens representing 18 species of meso- and bathypelagic fishes collected from the western North Atlantic were examined for parasites. Seventeen species and 39.1% of the specimens harboured at least one type of parasite. The highest number of parasite taxa recovered from a single fish species was seven. Host species had overall infection prevalences ranging from 10.0 to 88.9% of the specimens examined. Cestodes were most common (22.8% of all specimens examined), followed by fungi (6.6%), nematodes (6.1%) and digenetic trematodes (4.9%). Mesopelagic fishes showed a greater prevalence of infection (49.1%) than bathypelagic fishes (28.9%). Most parasites recovered were immature; however, based on the presence of adult and postlarval stage parasites, definitive and second intermediate host status is suggested for at least three fish species (Nemichthys scolopaceus, Nessorhamphus ingolfianus and Eurypharynx pelecanoides ). The presence of the cestode Nybelinia and Anisakis-lype nematodes among a number of host species may have been due to predation on the euphausiid Nematoscelis , which was found in the stomachs of all host species infected by these two parasite taxa. Higher overall infection prevalences among host species were found than have been previously reported for mid-water fishes and it is possible that this may be a function of near-bottom presence of the fishes over the continental slope. It is suggested that the low prevalence of parasites within meso- and bathypelagic fishes when compared to benthic and shallow-water species reflects the lower overall energy of, and reduced probability of host-to-host transfer in, the deep-sea pelagic ecosystem.  相似文献

Trophically transmitted parasites are known to impair fish growth in experimental studies, but this is not well documented in natural populations. For Arctic charr [Salvelinus alpinus (L.)], individual growth is positively correlated with food consumption. However, increased food consumption will increase the exposure to trophically transmitted parasites. Using a correlative approach, we explore the association between parasite abundance and the individual growth of Arctic charr from five lakes within the same watercourse. The studied parasite species differ in their life cycles and cost to the host. We predicted a positive association between parasite abundance and fish growth for parasites of low pathogenicity reflecting high consumption rates, and a negative association at higher parasite abundances for more costly parasites. We found no direct negative associations between parasite abundance and fish growth. The relationship between parasite abundance and growth was linearly positive for the low costly Crepidostomum sp. and concave for the more costly Eubothrium salvelini. In natural fish populations, the negative effects of parasites on fish growth might be outweighed by the energy assimilated from feeding on the intermediate host. However, experimental studies with varying food consumption regimes are needed to determine the mechanisms underlying our observations.

Nested species subsets are a common pattern in many types of communities found in insular or fragmented habitats. Nestedness occurs in some communities of ectoparasites of fish, as does the exact opposite departure from random assembly, anti-nestedness. Here, we looked for nested and anti-nested patterns in the species composition of communities of internal parasites of 23 fish populations from two localities in Finland. We also compared various community parameters of nested and anti-nested assemblages of parasites, and determined whether nestedness may result simply from a size-related accumulation of parasite species by feeding fish hosts. Nested parasite communities were characterised by higher prevalence (proportion of infected fish) and intensities of infection (number of parasites per fish) than anti-nested communities; the two types of non-random communities did not differ with respect to parasite species richness, however. In addition, the correlation between fish size and the number of parasite species harboured by individual fish was much stronger in nested assemblages than in anti-nested ones, where it was often nil. These results were shown not to be artefacts of sampling effort or host phylogeny. They apply to both assemblages of adult and larval parasites, which were treated separately. Since species of larval parasites are extremely unlikely to interact with one another in fish hosts, the establishment of nestedness appears independent of the potential action of interspecific interactions. The species composition of these parasite communities is not determined from within the community, but rather by the extrinsic influence of host feeding rates and how they amplify differences among parasite species in probabilities of colonisation or extinction. Nested patterns occur in parasite communities whose fish hosts accumulate parasites in a predictable fashion proportional to their size, whereas anti-nested communities occur in parasite communities whose fish hosts do not, possibly because of dietary specialisation preventing them from sampling the entire pool of parasite species available locally. Thus, nestedness in parasite communities may result from processes somewhat different from those generating nested patterns in free-living communities.  相似文献

The parasite faunas of 12 species of freshwater fish from 17 localities on the island of Jersey were examined. Comparison of the species composition, number, diversity and equitability of the parasite fauna of each species of fish in each locality revealed that community diversity was always low, that most communities were dominated by a single species of parasite, and that community similarity between host species, and often between sites, was generally low. This was not related to unavailability or distribution of potential, invertebrate, intermediate host species, but appeared to be due to chance colonization events. With two exceptions, little exchange of parasites took place between host species, despite vacant niches in the parasite communities and the absence of competitors, and normal parasite specificity was maintained. Comparison of the parasite communities with those on other oceanic islands suggests that they are poorer than would be predicted by island biogeographical theory, and that this is not a very good predictor of parasite community richness on oceanic islands.  相似文献

The parasite fauna of Dissostichus eleginoides was examined from locations around the Falkland Islands. In total, of 11,362 individual parasites of 27 taxa were recovered from 105 fish. Two species, Ceratomyxa dissostichi and Sphaerospora dissostichi, represent new host records. The nematode Ascarophis nototheniae and the larval acanothocephalan Corynosoma bullosum were found to be new locality records and add to the knowledge of the biogeography and host specificity of parasites on the Patagonian Shelf. There were no significant differences in the mean abundance and prevalence of parasites recovered between sexes. Therefore, sex was not considered in further analysis and the data were pooled. Cysts of unknown etiology (CUE), the monogenean Neopavlovskioides georgianus, the larval acanthocephalan Corynosoma bullosum, and the digenean Neolepidapedon magnatestis had significant positive correlations with increasing host length. The larval Trypanorhynch cestode Grillotia erinaceus and the digenean Elytrophalloides oatesi showed significant negative correlations with increasing host length. CUEs, N. georgianus, the digenean Gonocerca physidis and E. oatesi showed statistically significant prevalence between summer, winter, and spring. The effect of depth on parasite communities was also examined, initially using a linear discriminant function analysis. The prevalence of individual parasites was then compared between depth strata using the chi-square test. The parasite communities on the shelf and deep water (> 1,000 m) were found to be different, whereas those caught at intermediate depths on the shelf slope were found to have parasite communities that were intermediate, containing a mixture of shelf and deeper-water parasites. The causes of the variations in parasite faunas in association with these intrinsic and extrinsic factors are discussed.  相似文献

Metazoan parasites of pike Esox lucius from Southern Indian Lake, Manitoba were studied to reveal species composition, differences with host age, sex, and location and season of capture. Pike hosted 18 species of metazoan parasites, two of which, Tetraonchus monenteron and Proteocephalus pinguis , made up over 84% of metazoan parasite numbers. Some parasite species exhibited definite patterns of abundance with host age and season which resulted from changes in host diet and behaviour. No differences in parasite abundance existed between the host sexes. Ranking of parasite abundances was significantly different between two sampling sites only 2 km apart as a result of intermediate host distribution. Impoundment could greatly change pike parasite levels. An initial decrease in parasite numbers could be followed by a rapid increase.  相似文献

Fish parasites have been repeatedly reported to be a major threat to the developing industry of finfish mariculture in Indonesia, due to severe parasite and disease outbreaks. The aim of this study was to identify the metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates that infect Lates calcarifer in a representative mariculture farm in Indonesia. Examined were 105 L. calcarifer (seabass) for the metazoan parasite fauna and trichodinid ciliates. Thirty‐five specimens each from the net cages of the National Sea Farming Development Centre (Balai Budidaya Laut, BBL) in Lampung Bay, South Sumatra, Indonesia were investigated in three consecutive seasons (two dry and one rainy season from 2002 to 2003). Nineteen parasite species were identified; all fish specimens were infected with two to 10 parasite species, demonstrating a species‐rich parasite fauna. Protozoans (1 species), myxozoans (1), digeneans (3), monogeneans (5), cestodes (3), nematodes (5) and acanthocephalans (1) were found, including 11 new host records in cultured L. calcarifer from Indonesia. Larval and adult parasite stages were isolated, demonstrating that this fish species, although kept inside the net cages, still functions as an intermediate and final host for marine fish parasites. During all seasons, the six detected monoxenous (single host life cycle) parasite species showed a higher prevalence than the 13 heteroxenous (multiple hosts) species. Most abundant were the fish pathogenic monogeneans Pseudorhabdosynochus epinepheli, Pseudorhabdosynochus lantauensis, Benedenia epinepheli and Neobenedenia melleni with a high prevalence. Most heteroxenous parasites (Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda and Acanthocephala) occurred with a low prevalence below 26%, caused by the specific culture conditions. Diversity of the heteroxenous parasites was higher in the dry seasons than in the rainy season. Though some seasonality could be observed for the fish pathogenic monogeneans, severe disease outbreaks of these ectoparasites cannot be excluded in either the dry or rainy season.  相似文献

Fifty specimens of Notothenia coriiceps caught in Potter Cove, King George Island, were examined for ecto- and endoparasites. Of the 22 parasite species found, 18 were helminths, 2 were hirudineans and 2 were crustaceans. The isopod Aega antarctica and an unidentified hirudinean are reported for the first time from this fish host. Dominant parasites were the adults of Aspersentis megarhynchus, the invasive stage of Corynosoma spp. (cystacanth) and the adults of Macvicaria pennelli, with respective prevalences of infestation of 94, 76 and 74%. The preferred sites of infestation were the pylorus and intestine, where five different larval (nematodes and cestodes) and eight adult (digeneans and acanthocephalans) parasite species were found. No adult nematodes and cestodes were found and no parasites could be isolated from the musculature. The results of the present study are related to previous findings on the parasite fauna of N. coriiceps. The comparison implies a high parasite diversity in this benthic Antarctic fish species. Most parasites found appear to have a wide range of distribution within Antarctic waters together with a low host specificity. Besides its role as final host for several species of trematodes and acanthocephalans, N. coriiceps serves as transmitter of parasite larvae to piscivorous birds and seals. It is concluded that the parasite fauna in Antarctic fish species provides important insights into the different habitat use and trophic relationship of their fish hosts. The helminth parasites present in 412 lesser sandeels (Ammodytes tobianus) taken from June 1996 to May 1997 from the Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland were examined. Ten helminth parasite species were recorded, and more than 92% of the sandeels were infected with at least 1 helminth species. Seven of the species were digeneans, including Brachyphallus crenatus, Hemiurus communis, Derogenes varicus, Lecithaster gibbosus, Opechona bacillaris, Cryptocotyle lingua, and Galactosomum lacteum; 2 nematodes, including Hysterothylacium sp. and Contracaecum sp.; and 1 cestode, Scolex pleuronectis. Three of the 7 digenean species were either larvae or immature. Only 2 species, the digeneans G. lacteum and H. communis, had prevalences greater than 50%. The dominant species was G. lacteum, accounting for 67% of all parasites present. The relationship between spawned groups, host length, and season versus the abundance, prevalence, species richness, and the total number of parasites in the infracommunities was investigated. No difference was found between the parasite communities of the 2 spawning races of the host population. Mean abundance and prevalence of the different parasite species showed seasonal variation. Numbers of parasite species and numbers of parasites increased with fish length. The role of A. tobianus as an intermediate host for helminths was assessed; it was determined that most were infectious to birds or mammals, with the majority of the parasite species being autogenic (infectious to fish). The mean number of parasites per fish was nearly a quarter of the value recorded for A. tobianus in the North Sea, where a much higher intensity of infection was recorded.  相似文献

In aquatic ecosystems, fish play a key role in parasite accumulation and transmission to predacious animals. In the present study, realized on seven populations of a small cyprinid fish species, the European bitterling Rhodeus amarus, we investigated (1) the role of the European bitterling as a potential intermediate or paratenic host, (2) the ability of the fish to accumulate parasites with similar final host group, and (3) its significance as a potential source of parasite infection in the ecosystem in respect to habitat characteristics. A total of 36 parasite species were recorded; 31 species (90% of all parasite specimens) were classified as endoparasites. Most of the endoparasites were found in the larval life stage, using bitterling as an intermediate or paratenic host. In particular, parasite community structure showed significantly higher proportions of allogenic parasites in comparison with autogenic. The supposed co-occurrence of parasite species with identical final host groups showed only a weak association. The adjacent reservoir areas were a significant determinant of both the total and infracommunity parasite species richness and for the mean parasite abundance. No relationship between the distance of sampling site from the adjacent reservoir and parasite community characteristics was found. As a small-sized fish with a wide distribution range and high local abundances, the European bitterling can represent a natural prey for a wide range of piscivorous predators. Due to its susceptibility to the number of larval endoparasites, this fish species may therefore fulfill the role as important transmitter of parasites to their final hosts.  相似文献

Empirical studies suggest that most exotic species have fewer parasite species in their introduced range relative to their native range. However, it is less clear how, ecologically, the loss of parasite species translates into a measurable advantage for invaders relative to native species in the new community. We compared parasitism at three levels (species richness, abundance and impact) for a pair of native and introduced cichlid fishes which compete for resources in the Panama Canal watershed. The introduced Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was infected by a single parasite species from its native range, but shared eight native parasite species with the native Vieja maculicauda. Despite acquiring new parasites in its introduced range, O. niloticus had both lower parasite species richness and lower parasite abundance compared with its native competitor. There was also a significant negative association between parasite load (abundance per individual fish) and host condition for the native fish, but no such association for the invader. The effects of parasites on the native fish varied across sites and types of parasites, suggesting that release from parasites may benefit the invader, but that the magnitude of release may depend upon interactions between the host, parasites and the environment.  相似文献

Changes in abiotic and biotic factors between seasons in subarctic lake systems are often profound, potentially affecting the community structure and population dynamics of parasites over the annual cycle. However, few winter studies exist and interactions between fish hosts and their parasites are typically confined to snapshot studies restricted to the summer season whereas host‐parasite dynamics during the ice‐covered period rarely have been explored. The present study addresses seasonal patterns in the infections of intestinal parasites and their association with the diet of sympatric living Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) in Lake Takvatn, a subarctic lake in northern Norway. In total, 354 Arctic charr and 203 brown trout were sampled from the littoral habitat between June 2017 and May 2018. Six trophically transmitted intestinal parasite taxa were identified and quantified, and their seasonal variations were contrasted with dietary information from both stomachs and intestines of the fish. The winter period proved to be an important transmission window for parasites, with increased prevalence and intensity of amphipod‐transmitted parasites in Arctic charr and parasites transmitted through fish prey in brown trout. In Arctic charr, seasonal patterns in parasite infections resulted mainly from temporal changes in diet toward amphipods, whereas host body size and the utilization of fish prey were the main drivers in brown trout. The overall dynamics in the community structure of parasites chiefly mirrored the seasonal dietary shifts of their fish hosts.  相似文献

Communities of metazoan parasites in ten species of fishes from Cold Lake, Alberta are described and compared. Relative abundances in the overall community of parasites in the lake were estimated using data on abundance in each host species, plus estimates of the relative abundances of the species of hosts. Parasites of the numerically dominant salmonid fishes dominated the overall community, with over half of the individual parasites being Metechinorhynchus salmonis . Exchange of parasites between host species was greatest between related and/or abundant host species. Parasite communities in cisco and whitefish, Coregonus spp., were relatively rich in species and diverse (Simpson's index) compared with communities in those species in other lakes in North America; communities in lake trout, Salvelinus spp., and the non-salmonid fishes were poor in species and low in diversity compared with communities in other lakes. Parasite species overlaps (Jaccard index) between related host species in Cold Lake were greater than overlaps within host species between lakes. The same pattern is seen in data from some other lakes. These features support the hypothesis of Wisiewski (1958); that the parasite community within an ecosystem is characterized by parasites of the numerically dominant hosts.  相似文献

One hundred and twenty-eight specimens of namorado sandperches, 62 P. numida and 66 P. semifasciata, collected between October 2002 and June 2003 off the Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Lat 23 degrees S and Long 42 degrees W), were examined to study their metazoan parasites. Parasite communities of these fish were composed basically of endoparasites, mainly digenean and cestodes species, with low prevalence and abundance but having high parasite species richness values (at the component community level). Among these values, that found for P. numida is the highest so far recorded for marine fishes from the Neotropical Region. Thirty-nine species of metazoan parasites were collected: 36 from P. numida and 28 from P. semifasciata. Twenty-five parasite species were common to both species of namorado sandperches. Pseudopercis numida and P. semifasciata are new host records for all parasite species collected, with the exception of Microcotyle pseudopercis. Choanodera sp., Leurodera decora, Neolebouria georgenascimentoi, and Proctoeces sp. which were recorded for the first time in the South American Atlantic Ocean. Gnathia sp. from P. numida and Scolex pleuronectis from P. semifasciata were the species having the greatest dominance frequency. Parasite abundance in P. numida and P. semifasciata were positively correlated with the host total length. Only in P. numida was parasite species richness correlated positively with the host total length. No significant differences between endoparasite infracommunities of P. numida and P. semifasciata were detected. The ectoparasites of P. numida had higher values for parasite abundance, parasite richness, Brillouin index, evenness index, and Berger-Parker index than those of the ectoparasites of P. semifasciata. Comparisons among all ecto- and endoparasites showed the ectoparasites of P. numida as the most heterogeneous group. Low similarity values were observed among the three types of parasite infracommunities of the two hosts.  相似文献

The communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). The latter is a new host record, and A. physeteris is reported for the first time in blue whiting from the north-east Atlantic. Host gender was not a significant predictor of abundance of any helminth species, and host length was only weakly and positively related to the abundance of A. simplex. Infracommunities were species-poor, with 56% of fish harbouring only one parasite species, and 92% up to two species. Infracommunities were strongly dominated by A. simplex (389 fish) or S. lophii (6 fish). Fish length or gender, and the year of capture, did not affect species richness nor the degree of dominance. There were no significant pair-wise associations between species. Infracommunities were basically composed of several allogenic parasites with different life histories that converge in the blue whiting through the local food web. The parasite fauna of blue whiting in the study area was poor and distinctive compared with that of other localities in the north-east North Atlantic. These peculiarities might primarily be related to the composition of the local community of definitive hosts, although there might also be some influence of the geographical distribution of parasites.  相似文献
