Seeds of eight species of Cruciferae were collected, usually in each of 3 years, and mixed with the top 7-5 cm of sterilised soil confined in cylinders sunk in the ground outdoors and cultivated three times yearly. The seedlings emerging were recorded for 5 yr and the numbers of viable seeds remaining then determined. Emergence of Alliaria petiolata was almost entirely restricted to February and March. That of Erysimum cheiranthoides, Lepidium campestre, Sinapis arvensis and Raphanus raphanistrum took place mainly in March and April, but seedlings continued to appear until late autumn. Some seedlings of Arabidopsis thaliana, Cardamine hirsuta and Sisymbrium officinale appeared in spring, but most did so in summer (C. hirsuta and S. officinale) or early autumn (A. thaliana). Seed survival in A. petiolata was of short duration and there were few seedlings after the second year, whereas 18% of the seeds of R. raphanistrum were still present and viable after 5 yr. Seed survival at this time for the other six species ranged from 1 -6% (C. hirsuta) to 6-1% (S. arvensis).  相似文献

The genetic diversity of Agave plants is threatened by clonal commercial reproduction and climatic change. Sexual reproduction is uncommon and research on seed germination is scarce. The present study evaluated the seed germination of Agave lechuguilla, Agave striata, Agave americana var. marginata, Agave asperrima, Agave cupreata, Agave duranguesis, Agave angustifolia ssp. tequilana and Agave salmiana at constant temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C). Initial imbibition (after the first 12 h) was significantly variable among species, positively correlated with seed weight (r = 0.6560, P < 0.001) and increased with temperature (from 35% at 10°C to 66% at 40°C). Temperature affected maximum imbibition (83–150%) for A. asperrima, A. lechuguilla, A. salmiana and A. striata; other species averaged 110%. Most germination kinetics best fitted a logistic model, whereas only a few treatments fit a Weibull model. The time to germination onset diminished (P < 0.05) from 125–173 h at 15°C to 68–84 h at 25°C, and then ascended to 84–196 h at 35°C. The mean germination rate and seed germination percentage after 312 h peaked at 25°C (0.50–0.95% seeds/h and 85–99%, respectively) and fell (P < 0.05) to near zero at 10 and 40°C. Temperatures of 10, 35 and 40°C were partially lethal to A. asperrima, A. duranguensis and A. salmiana seeds. The time to germination onset, seed germination percentage after 312 h and mean germination rate are best described by a Gaussian distribution, with its optimum at approximately 25°C. Thus, optimum temperatures are related to the ecological characteristics of each species area.  相似文献

The thyroid gland is one of the most radiosensitive human organs. While it is well known that radiation exposure increases the risk of thyroid cancer, less is known about its effects in relation to non-malignant thyroid diseases. The aim of this review is to evaluate the effects of high- and low-dose radiation on benign structural and functional diseases of the thyroid. We examined the results of major studies from cancer patients treated with high-dose radiotherapy or thyrotoxicosis patients treated with high doses of iodine-131, patients treated with moderate- to high-dose radiotherapy for benign diseases, persons exposed to low doses from environmental radiation, and survivors of the atomic bombings who were exposed to a range of doses. We evaluated radiation effects on structural (tumors, nodules), functional (hyper- and hypothyroidism), and autoimmune thyroid diseases. After a wide range of doses of ionizing radiation, an increased risk of thyroid adenomas and nodules was observed in a variety of populations and settings. The dose response appeared to be linear at low to moderate doses, but in one study there was some suggestion of a reduction in risk above 5 Gy. The elevated risk for benign tumors continues for decades after exposure. Considerably less consistent findings are available regarding functional thyroid diseases including autoimmune diseases. In general, associations for these outcomes were fairly weak, and significant radiation effects were most often observed after high doses, particularly for hypothyroidism. A significant radiation dose-response relationship was demonstrated for benign nodules and follicular adenomas. The effects of radiation on functional thyroid diseases are less clear, partly due to the greater difficulties encountered in studying these diseases.  相似文献

All samples showed great diversity in terms of both total proteinase inhibitory capacity and specificity. 3. This paper is part of a wider study in which different combinations of species were assayed for the revegetation of experimentally burnt heathlands. In this particular case, we determined whether there was any interaction between the dominant species, Erica australis, which recovered by vegetative resprouting, and the only successful woody species sown, Cytisus sp., eight years after fire and seven years after sowing. A detailed study was carried out on each square metre of cover and height of both species in three 160 m2 plots. Total cover exceeded 100% in all subplots sown with Cytisus, whereas it did not reach 65% in the others, when both species coexist together. There was an inverse correlation between the covers of both species and a positive correlation between the height of Erica australis and the cover and the height of Cytisus. There was no significant difference in Erica cover in plots sown with Cytisus and plots not sown. There could be some competition for light, but both species are capable of coexisting with high canopy overlap, for at least some time. Cytisus is expanding from the seeded subplots, suggesting that the dense cover of Erica australis does not impede the establishment of Cytisus. To test modifications in sensitization to radiation or drugs in preclinical studies of cancer therapy, the colony-forming assay is regarded as the gold standard. Because this assay is time consuming, somewhat laborious, and unsuitable for rapid screening, development of other assays is desirable. We describe here an assay based on the detection of enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) with flow cytometry that is particularly suitable for genetic manipulation studies in which the gene of interest is introduced together with EGFP as reporter. It is easily adaptable to other reporters, however, whether naturally fluorescent or requiring immunochemical staining. Cells are irradiated as mixed populations of a known standard cell line (nonfluorescent) together with the genetically manipulated cell line expressing EGFP. Ratios of fluorescent and nonfluorescent cells are measured before treatment and several days after treatment. If the cell populations have equal radiosensitivities, the ratio remains unchanged. Changes in the ratio indicate changes in radiosensitivity. The assay was validated for two situations in which dominant negative peptides inhibiting DNA repair were expressed in A549 human lung cells and affected radiosensitivity.  相似文献

Seed reserves play an essential role during germination and seedling establishment and are particularly important for species that grow in seasonal ecosystems with a short growing season. In this study, we examined (a) how and when the seedlings change their dependence from seed resources to external resources, (b) the lipid, nitrogen, and non-structural carbohydrate reserve translocation from seeds to seedlings over time, and (c) whether reserve translocation may be correlated to cotyledon and leaf lifespan of seedlings for eight tree species in a tropical deciduous forest in north-western Mexico. Our results showed that the cotyledon lifespan was not related to the cotyledon type (photosynthetic or reserve) and that the cotyledon biomass did not decrease significantly until germination. In six of the eight studied species, biomass allocation to the leaves was favored; lipids were the first reserve exhausted before the first leaves were totally expanded in seven of the eight study species. Species with the highest N concentration had expanded leaves and lost their cotyledons faster than species with a low N concentration. Our results suggest that tropical deciduous forest species employ different strategies to survive the dry season and re-sprout in the next growing season mediated by seed reserve concentrations, translocation patterns and subsequent biomass allocation.  相似文献

Evolutionary adaptation to variation in resource supply has resulted in plant strategies that are based on trade‐offs in functional traits. Here, we investigate, for the first time across multiple species, whether such trade‐offs are also apparent in growth and morphology responses to past low, current ambient, and future high CO2 concentrations. We grew freshly germinated seedlings of up to 28 C3 species (16 forbs, 6 woody, and 6 grasses) in climate chambers at 160 ppm, 450 ppm, and 750 ppm CO2. We determined biomass, allocation, SLA (specific leaf area), LAR (leaf area ratio), and RGR (relative growth rate), thereby doubling the available data on these plant responses to low CO2. High CO2 increased RGR by 8%; low CO2 decreased RGR by 23%. Fast growers at ambient CO2 had the greatest reduction in RGR at low CO2 as they lost the benefits of a fast‐growth morphology (decoupling of RGR and LAR [leaf area ratio]). Despite these shifts species ranking on biomass and RGR was unaffected by CO2, winners continued to win, regardless of CO2. Unlike for other plant resources we found no trade‐offs in morphological and growth responses to CO2 variation, changes in morphological traits were unrelated to changes in growth at low or high CO2. Thus, changes in physiology may be more important than morphological changes in response to CO2 variation.  相似文献

Stem traits were analysed in laboratory-grown seedlings of 80 European woody and semiwoody species of known potential relative growth rate (RGR) and of similar ontogenetic phase. The objectives were, firstly, to assess the relation between stem structure and plant growth potential and, secondly, to explore how stem structure varies among species differing in life form and leaf habit. Hydraulic conductance was represented by the mean diameter of the widest xylem conduits (Dmax), and structural strength by the percentage of xylem tissue occupied by cell wall material (CWx) or stem tissue density (SD). Across all species RGR showed a weak positive correlation with Dmax and weak negative ones with CWx and SD, with slow-growers showing great dispersion of stem trait values. In the RGR-Dmax relationship this dispersion disappeared when trees were removed from the analysis. None of the relationships were significant among tree species alone. It was suggested that fast-growers require a xylem with wide conduits (high Dmax) to achieve high hydraulic conductivity, and “cheaply” constructed stems (low CWx and SD) to maximise allocation to leaves. However, the possession of such traits does not guarantee fast growth, as other factors may constrain RGR elsewhere in the plant. Deciduous seedlings showed higher Dmax and lower CWx than evergreens. Higher Dmax could reflect an innate higher tolerance of conductivity loss by freeze-induced embolism in deciduous plants, which are not burdened by the maintenance of foliage in winter. In contrast, life forms were differentiated most clearly by SD. For instance, shrub seedlings had less dense stem tissues than tree seedlings, possibly because they need less investment in long-term strength and stature. It was shown that gamma-irradiation of Brucella strain chemical vaccine stimulated phospholipid peroxidation therein: the content of extractable total phospholipids in the exposed vaccine decreased mainly due to diminution of phosphatidylcholines and phosphatidyl-ethanolamines. The four methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins of Escherichia coli, often called transducers, are transmembrane receptor proteins that exhibit substantial identity among the sequences of their cytoplasmic domains. Thus, antiserum raised to one of these proteins recognizes the others and might be expected to recognize related proteins in other bacteria. We used antiserum raised to the transducer Trg in immunoblot experiments to probe a wide range of bacterial species for the presence of antigenically related proteins. Such proteins were detected in over 20 different species, representing 6 of the 11 eubacterial phyla defined by analysis of rRNA sequences as well as one archaebacterial group. Species containing proteins antigenically related to the transducers of E. coli included members of all four subdivisions of the phylum in which E. coli is placed, members of four of the six subdivisions of spirochetes, and two gliding bacteria. These observations provide substantial support for the notion that methyl-accepting taxis proteins are widely distributed among the diversity of bacterial species.  相似文献
