  • 1 By examining variation in the abilities of polyphagous insects to develop on host plants with secondary metabolites that they have never encountered previously, we may be able to gain some insights into the nature of evolution of biochemical mechanisms to process plant secondary metabolites by phytophagous insects.
  • 2 The present study aimed to examine variation in the ability of gypsy moth larvae Lymantria dispar (Lymantriidae) to complete development on different species of the plant genus Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae). Leaves of at least some Eucalyptus species contain formylated phloroglucinol derivatives. These are secondary metabolites that are evolutionarily unfamiliar to the gypsy moth.
  • 3 Larvae of gypsy moth showed extremely variable responses in larval performance between Eucalyptus species, between individual trees within host plant species, between moth populations, and between individuals within moth populations.
  • 4 Larval survivorship was in the range 0–94%, depending on the host. Failure of at least some larvae to complete development on some Eucalyptus species indicates that gypsy moth larvae have a limited ability to process secondary metabolites in eucalypt leaves.
  • 5 At least some individuals, however, appear to already possess biochemical mechanisms that process the secondary metabolites in leaves of Eucalyptus species, and therefore the abilities of larvae to complete development on phylogenetically and chemically unfamiliar hosts are already present before the gypsy moth encounters these potential hosts.

Keystone species in their native ranges, eucalypts, are ecologically and genetically very diverse, growing naturally along extensive latitudinal and altitudinal ranges and variable environments. Besides their ecological importance, eucalypts are also the most widely planted trees for sustainable forestry in the world. We report the development of a novel collection of 535 microsatellites for species of Eucalyptus, 494 designed from ESTs and 41 from genomic libraries. A selected subset of 223 was evaluated for individual identification, parentage testing, and ancestral information content in the two most extensively studied species, Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus globulus. Microsatellites showed high transferability and overlapping allele size range, suggesting they have arisen still in their common ancestor and confirming the extensive genome conservation between these two species. A consensus linkage map with 437 microsatellites, the most comprehensive microsatellite‐only genetic map for Eucalyptus, was built by assembling segregation data from three mapping populations and anchored to the Eucalyptus genome. An overall colinearity between recombination‐based and physical positioning of 84% of the mapped microsatellites was observed, with some ordering discrepancies and sporadic locus duplications, consistent with the recently described whole genome duplication events in Eucalyptus. The linkage map covered 95.2% of the 605.8‐Mbp assembled genome sequence, placing one microsatellite every 1.55 Mbp on average, and an overall estimate of physical to recombination distance of 618 kbp/cM. The genetic parameters estimates together with linkage and physical position data for this large set of microsatellites should assist marker choice for genome‐wide population genetics and comparative mapping in Eucalyptus.  相似文献

桉树(Eucalyptus spp.)种植所产生的生态争议已受到广泛关注。丛枝菌根真菌(Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, AM真菌)是土壤微生物的重要组成部分,与根系共生后可促进植物的养分运输、提高植物逆境生存能力等。然而,桉树种植对土壤AM真菌群落结构和功能的影响尚不清楚。研究比较了次生林改种桉树后不同年限(2年/5年/10年)的土壤理化性质、AM真菌种类、群落组成及多样性的变化。结果表明,桉树种植显著改变了土壤理化性质,具体表现为2年生和10年生桉树林中土壤pH和有机碳显著降低(P0.05);AM真菌的孢子密度在桉树林土壤中显著低于次生林土壤(其中在5年生土壤中最低);AM真菌的种丰度随种植年份的增加逐渐下降,在10年生桉树林土壤中有所恢复; 5年生桉树的菌根侵染率最高,10年生桉树侵染率最低。AM真菌群落组成和结构发生显著变化,优势种Funneliforms geosporus的丰度在2年生和10年生林地中显著降低;而Septoglomus deserticola的丰度在2年生和10年生林地中显著增加。另外,冗余分析(Redundancy analysis, RDA)结果表明,土壤AM真菌群落结构主要受土壤pH值(解释率:89.88%)变化的影响。研究揭示了次生林改种桉树林后土壤AM真菌的群落变化特征,为桉树林的栽培管理和环境修复提供了数据支撑。  相似文献

A number of reed populations (Phragmites australis) from natural locations on the shore of Lake Ammersee in the south of Bavaria as well as artificially grown reed plants were analyzed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in order to evaluate for further ecological studies the dynamics of the restriction pattern within the genome of plants which propagate themselves asexually. The artificially grown reed plants were raised in four ponds supplemented with different phosphate concentrations (8 μg, 16 μg, 50 μg, and 200 μg/l) from rhizomes taken from a neighbouring fish pond. The genomic DNA of 25 of these plants and the DNA from 37 plants out of 18 stands from the lakeshore was isolated and restricted with the enzyme EcoRI, EcoRV, XbaI and HindIII and hybridized to three probes from a shot-gun cloned reed plasmid library. The probes gave between 15 and 26 bands (DNA fingerprints) of high polymorphic frequency (68% ? 100%) after hybridization with repetitive sequences of restricted DNA. A cluster analysis based on the banding pattern as a measure of genetic similarity (GS) was performed with the two sets of reed plants. The plants from the lakeshore exhibited a clear formation of clusters with GS up to 100%; the 20 plants grown from rhizomes, in contrast, did not show any clear correlation among themselves, neither to the phosphate concentration they grew in, nor to the five plants tested from the pond their rhizomes came from. The value of genetical investigations of the plant genome in context with environmental impact on plants is being discussed.  相似文献

Background and AimsHybridization is an important evolutionary process that can have a significant impact on natural plant populations. Eucalyptus species are well known for weak reproductive barriers and extensive hybridization within subgenera, but there is little knowledge of whether patterns of hybridization differ among subgenera. Here, we examine eucalypts of Western Australia’s Stirling Range to investigate how patterns of hybridization are associated with landscape and taxon age between the two largest Eucalyptus subgenera: Eucalyptus and Symphyomyrtus. In doing so, we tested a hypothesis of OCBIL (old, climatically buffered, infertile landscape) theory that predicts reduced hybridization on older landscapes.MethodsSingle nucleotide polymorphism markers were applied to confirm the hybrid status, parentage and genetic structure of five suspected hybrid combinations for subg. Eucalyptus and three combinations for subg. Symphyomyrtus.Key ResultsEvidence of hybridization was found in all combinations, and parental taxa were identified for most combinations. The older parental taxa assessed within subg. Eucalyptus, which are widespread on old landscapes, were identified as well-defined genetic entities and all hybrids were exclusively F1 hybrids. In addition, many combinations showed evidence of clonality, suggesting that the large number of hybrids recorded from some combinations is the result of long-term clonal spread following a few hybridization events rather than frequent hybridization. In contrast, the species in subg. Symphyomyrtus, which typically occur on younger landscapes and are more recently evolved, showed less distinction among parental taxa, and where hybridization was detected, there were high levels of introgression.ConclusionsReduced hybridization in subg. Eucalyptus relative to extensive hybridization in subg. Symphyomyrtus affirmed the hypothesis of reduced hybridization on OCBILs and demonstrate that clade divergence times, landscape age and clonality are important drivers of differing patterns of speciation and hybridization in Eucalyptus.  相似文献

Abstract Social crab spiders (Thomisidae, Diaea) are found in Eucalyptus forests of varying latitude, altitude and species composition in southern Australia. Neither temperature nor rainfall differ between areas where social Diaea are found, suggesting that spiders have a preferred climatic range, and that they change altitudes at different latitudes to maintain their preferred range. In these areas, those Eucalyptus species that hosted Diaea had smaller leaves and fruit than eucalypts that did not, which suggests that the spiders may choose trees based on leaf morphology.  相似文献

The feeding behavior of four captive adult koalas was investigated at the San Francisco Zoo. This study examined the correlations between koala preference for selected Eucalyptus species and the nutritional and chemical components of those species. The total grams of Eucalyptus leaves consumed daily per animal were not significantly different, averaging 400 grams. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in consumption of the nine different Eucalyptus species across the 16-day feeding study. Significant differences in chemical composition (percent) were found among all Eucalyptus species examined. There was a significant positive correlation (P = 0.04) between quantity of a given Eucalyptus species consumed and crude protein level. A significant negative correlation was found between consumption and ADF (P = 0.01). No overall group pattern of correlation emerged between koala consumption and Eucalyptus essential oil content, although there were associations between individual koalas and certain essential oils (including cineole). The results suggest that it may not be the amount of an oil that determined Eucalyptus selection by the koalas, but rather the presence of a single oil or a combination of oils in the leaves. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Aim There has been considerable debate about pre‐settlement stand structures in temperate woodlands in south‐eastern Australia. Traditional histories assumed massive tree losses across the region, whereas a number of recent histories propose that woodlands were originally open and trees regenerated densely after settlement. To reconcile these conflicting models, we gathered quantitative data on pre‐settlement stand structures in EucalyptusCallitris woodlands in central New South Wales Australia, including: (1) tree density, composition, basal area and canopy cover at the time of European settlement; and (2) post‐settlement changes in these attributes. Location Woodlands dominated by Eucalyptus species and Callitris glaucophylla, which originally occupied approximately 100,000 km2 in central New South Wales, Australia. Methods We recorded all evidence of pre‐settlement trees, including stumps, stags and veteran trees, from 39 relatively undisturbed 1‐ha stands within 16 State Forests evenly distributed across the region. Current trees were recorded in a nested 900 m2 quadrat at each site. Allometric relationships were used to estimate girth over bark at breast height, tree basal area, and crown diameter from the girth of cut stumps. A post‐settlement disturbance index was developed to assess correlations between post‐settlement disturbance and attributes of pre‐settlement stands. Results The densities of all large trees (> 60 cm girth over bark at breast height) were significantly greater in current stands than at the time of European settlement (198 vs. 39 trees ha?1). Pre‐settlement and current stands did not differ in basal area. However, the proportional representation of Eucalyptus and Callitris changed completely. At the time of settlement, stands were dominated by Eucalyptus (78% of basal area), whereas current stands are dominated by Callitris (74%). On average, Eucalyptus afforded 83% of crown cover at the time of settlement. Moreover, the estimated density, basal area and crown cover of Eucalyptus at the time of settlement were significantly negatively correlated with post‐settlement disturbance, which suggests that these results underestimate pre‐settlement Eucalyptus representation in the most disturbed stands. Main conclusions These results incorporate elements of traditional and recent vegetation histories. Since European settlement, State Forests have been transformed from Eucalyptus to Callitris dominance as a result of the widespread clearance of pre‐settlement Eucalyptus and dense post‐settlement recruitment of Callitris. Tree densities did increase greatly after European settlement, but most stands were much denser at the time of settlement than recent histories suggest. The original degree of dominance by Eucalyptus was unexpected, and has been consistently underestimated in the past. This study has greatly refined our understanding of post‐settlement changes in woodland stand structures, and will strengthen the foundation for management policies that incorporate historical benchmarks of landscape vegetation changes.  相似文献

Hybridization and introgression are thought to be important for speciation and adaptation in many plants. However, little is known about the hybridization and introgression among Cypripedium species. To investigate the evidence for hybridization and the pattern of introgression between Cypripedium yunnanense and C. tibeticum in Shangrila County, Yunnan Province, China, morphological characters and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) data for both the species and their putative hybrids were studied. Hand pollination was also performed to verify the crossability of the putative parents. Principal coordinate analysis based on morphological characters and the AFLP data suggested that the putative hybrids were true hybrids of these two Cypripedium species. Analysis with the NewHybrids software indicated that the putative hybrids were F1 generation individuals and backcrosses to C. yunnanese, but no F2 generation was found. Analysis with the Structure software demonstrated asymmetric introgression from C. tibeticum to C. yunnanense. We conclude that natural hybridization and introgression can occur between these two species and that in situ conservation of the parental species is required before fully assessing the evolutionary potential of hybrids.  相似文献

Herit)是桃金娘科(Myrtaceae)的大属,该属约600余种,主要分布于世界各地热带亚热带地区。我国引入品种较多,主要分布于华南地区,其中广东和广西为桉树的主要种植基地。桉属植物具有较多的工业价值,其木材、叶、果实等是化学工业、香料、医药领域的重要原料,可用作开发高性能桉木重组材、竹桉复合材料、造浆与造纸等。桉属植物作为民间药材被使用,具有抑菌消炎、疏风解热、防腐止痒等功效,其药理研究表明,桉属植物具有良好的抗氧化、抗炎、抗菌、抗病毒、抗肿瘤、抗心血管疾病等药理活性。该研究通过查阅近三十年桉属植物相关的国内外文献报道,对桉属植物不同部位的421个非挥发性化学成分及其药理活性等进行了较详细的分类阐述,其中黄酮类化合物共73个、有机酸化合物共61个、萜类化合物共45个、多酚类化合物共229个、脂肪醇类化合物共13个,药理活性多集中在抗氧化、抗菌、抗病毒、抗肿瘤等,但相关机制仍需进一步阐明。该文重点关注桉属植物的药用部位,充分发掘其药用价值,开展临床转化和新药研究工作,为今后桉属植物的进一步研究、开发和利用提供科学依据。  相似文献

在海南西部儋州林场选取空间相邻、自然环境相似、不同林龄与连栽代次的桉树林样地和椰树林对照样地,通过2010—2012年连续3a定点取样,研究桉树林土壤水分变化特征及其对林龄的响应,分析桉树林种植对林地土壤水分的影响。结果表明:(1)1—4月土壤含水量持续减少,5—6月波动较大,7—10月增加到年内极大值,11—12月降低,但处于年内较高水平。(2)短伐桉树林(二代5年桉树林、三代1年桉树林、三代4年桉树林)、20a桉树林以及10a椰树林5个样地的月均土壤含水量存在显著或极显著差异。二代5年桉树林与三代1年桉树林之间以及20a桉树林与10a椰树林之间的土壤含水量差异均不显著;其余各林地之间土壤含水量差异显著或极显著。(3)随着土壤深度增加,短伐桉树林与20a桉树林、10a椰树林之间的土壤含水量差异增大。表层0—30 cm短伐桉树林年均土壤含水量为6.08%,20a桉树林为7.53%,10a椰树林为6.93%;80 cm以下则分别为8.10%、11.72%和11.95%。与10a椰树林、20a桉树林相比,短伐桉树林对土壤深层水分有较大负面影响。(4)短伐桉树林、20a桉树林和10a椰树林土壤含水量的变异系数由表层到深层逐渐递减,其中林龄较大的短伐桉树林变异系数较大,且变异系数较大的土层也较深厚。与20a桉树林、10a椰树林相比,林龄较大的短伐桉树林对深层土壤水分的消耗较多。(5)连栽代次愈多,林龄越大,土壤含水量愈少;采伐之后1a桉树林的土壤含水量明显增加,有利于桉树后期生长。  相似文献

Extensive areas of Acacia harpophylla (brigalow) woodlands have been cleared for pasture production in Queensland. The woody regrowth of A. harpophylla influences pasture production and composition following initial development of these woodlands. Biomass component regressions were developed using tree basal area as the predictor variable and used to estimate component yields of regrowing A. harpophylla communities. Leaf biomass of A. harpophylla reached a maximum of 12 t ha-1 with a leaf area index of 2.5 when regrowing plants were 2.5 m high and about 10 years old. Pasture production, pasture basal area and the proportion of sown pasture species were lower at higher tree basal area of A. harpophylla. The greatest decrease was seen between 0 and 2 m2ha-2tree basal area. Annual grasses and broadleaf herbaceous species represented a greater proportion of pasture biomass at high tree basal area. The poor control achieved by herbicide sprays on A. harpophylla plants that are 2–2.5 m tall would be partly due to poor coverage of the herbicide spray, as leaf area index is at a maximum at this stage. A density of 1000 plants ha-1is a threshold value above which regrowth control would be necessary at some stage to maintain acceptable pasture production and composition. The non-linear regression relationship between pasture production and tree basal area was similar to that observed in Eucalyptus spp. However, in the equation that relates pasture yield (Y) to tree basal area (X), Y = A + B*e(-kX)the value of k for A. harpophylla communities was generally higher than observed in Eucalyptus spp. communities with the same potential pasture production in the absence of trees. Within even-aged stands, the use of tree leaf biomass to predict pasture production showed no advantage over the use of tree basal area as the predictor. However, there are advantages in using tree leaf biomass as a predictor when comparing communities with different size- or age-class structures.  相似文献

The allelopathic potential of four tree species on soil microbial populations and some herbaceous plants (two understory species and one general biotest species) was investigated. Effects of three nonindigenous tree species, Eucalyptus globulus Labill, Pinus radiata D.Don and Acacia melanoxylon R.Br., on microorganisms participating in the cycle of nitrogen were evaluated, comparing them with those produced by the autochthonous Quercus robur L. Influence of the trees on Lactuca sativa L., Dactylis glomerata L. and Trifolium repens L. was also checked in bioassays. Cell numbers of Nitrosomonas sp. were negatively affected by Acacia and Eucalyptus stands, mainly during spring, when flowers are especially abundant on the ground. Proteolytic microorganisms were also negatively affected by Eucalyptus and Pinus stands, whilst Quercus stand did not show any toxicity. Soil bioassays showed clear inhibitory effects on germination and growth of understory plants, particularly soils from Eucalyptus and Acacia stands. The greatest effects had the soil from Acacia stand, which was phytotoxic during the whole period of germination and growth of understory plants. Allelopathic phenomena could be, at least partially, responsible of the low species diversity in the understory of the nonindigenous tree stands.  相似文献

We compared the vegetation structure between old (>70 year) stands of planted diversified native forests and stands of Eucalyptus tereticornis embedded in a mosaic of Eucalyptus stands. We then tested for differences in the abundance, species richness, species composition, and ecological traits (forest dependence, sensitivity to forest fragmentation, and diet) of the understory bird assemblages inhabiting both kinds of stands. We expected differences in the structure of the bird assemblages because of the different origins and management strategies (contrary to native stands, Eucalyptus stands were selectively logged in the past). Three stands of each habitat (native and Eucalyptus) were sampled with mist nets during 11 months. Eucalyptus stands had a denser understory, whereas native plantations had a more developed vertical structure and a greater density of native trees. The abundance distribution of bird species was more homogeneous in Eucalyptus than in native stands. Eucalyptus had slightly higher species richness (36 species) than native stands (32 species). The composition of species and the occurrence of the diet, forest dependence, and sensitivity to forest fragmentation categories were similar between habitats. Some bird species (e.g. Turdus leucomelas), however, were more abundant in one habitat over the other. Old stands of Eucalyptus and planted native forest can harbor a diverse bird community similar in structure but not exactly equivalent for individual bird species. Planting native diversified forests and keeping set‐aside stands of the exotic tree should be viewed as complementary rather than alternative strategies for maintaining bird diversity within plantations.  相似文献

Analysis of soil solution from forest sites dominated by Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus maculata indicates that soluble forms of organic nitrogen (amino acids and protein) are present in concentrations similar to those of mineral nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium). Experiments were conducted to determine the extent to which mycorrhizal associations might broaden nitrogen source utilization in Eucalyptus seedlings to include organic nitrogen. In isolation, species of ectomycorrhizal fungi from northern Australia show varying abilities to utilize mineral and organic forms of nitrogen as sole sources. Pisolithus sp. displayed strongest growth on NH4+, glutamine and asparagine, but grew poorly on protein, while Amanita sp. grew well both on mineral sources and on a range of organic sources (e.g. arginine, asparagine, glutamine and protein). In sterile culture, non-mycorrhizal seedlings of Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus maculata grew well on mineral sources of nitrogen, but showed no ability to grow on sources of organic nitrogen other than glutamine. In contrast, mycorrhizal seedlings grew well on a range of organic nitrogen sources. These observations indicate that mycorrhizal associations confer on species of Eucalyptus the ability to broaden their resource base substantially with respect to nitrogen. This ability to utilize organic nitrogen was not directly related to that of the fungal symbiont in isolation. Seedlings mycorrhizal with Pisolithus sp. were able to assimilate sources of nitrogen (in particular histidine and protein) on which the fungus in pure culture appeared to grow weakly. Experiments in which plants were fed 15N-labelled ammonium were undertaken in order to investigate the influence of mycorrhizal colonization on the pathway of nitrogen metabolism. In roots and shoots of all seedlings, 15N was incorporated into the amide group of glutamine, and label was also found in the amino groups of glutamine, glutamic acid, γ-aminobutyric acid and alanine. Mycorrhizal colonization appeared to have no effect on the assimilation pathway and metabolism of [15N]H4+; labelling data were consistent with the operation of the glutamate synthase cycle in plants infected with either Pisolithus sp. (which in isolation assimilates via the glutamate synthase cycle) or Elaphomyces sp. (which assimilates via glutamate dehydrogenase). It is likely that the control of carbon supply to the mycorrhizal fungus from the host may have a profound effect on both the assimilatory pathway and the range of nitrogen sources that can be utilized by the association.  相似文献

The history of isolated patches of monsoon rainforest within large tracts of Eucalyptus savanna is poorly understood because of the scarcity of reliable palaeoecological records in the Australian monsoon tropics. Elsewhere in the world, the ratio of the stable isotopes 13C to 12C (δ13C) in soil organic matter has shed light on the dynamics of rainforest–savanna boundaries because tropical grasses with the C4 photosynthetic pathway have a distinct δ13C signature (–17 to –9‰) compared with that of woody plants with the C3 photosynthetic pathway (–32 to –22‰). In order to determine the magnitude of the variation in δ13C, unreplicated soil profiles were sampled beneath different vegetation types on three boundaries between Eucalyptus savanna and rainforest that were both growing on Tertiary age laterite parent material. Replicated (n = 3) soil profiles, which were also derived from Tertiary age laterite, were sampled from beneath: (i) dense stands of African grasses within a frequently burnt Eucalyptus savanna; and within the same long unburnt Eucalyptus savanna, (ii) patches of African and natives grasses and (iii) clumps of Acacia trees. The strongly negative δ13C values of soil organic matter derived from the frequently burnt and long unburnt grassy understoreys in the Eucalyptus savannas showed that a considerable amount of the soil carbon was derived from C3 (woody) species despite the presence of a ground layer dominated by C4 grasses. However, a feature of these data was the considerable variability among the three ‘replicate’ profiles. The surface soil samples from beneath three clumps of Acacia trees in the unburnt Eucalyptus savanna had much less variable δ13C values and were similar to two of the three monsoon rainforests sampled. The pattern of δ13C values from unreplicated soil profiles from different vegetation types across three rainforest boundaries was also very variable and not always obviously related the known disturbance history of the extant vegetation. Given the considerable variability within and between vegetation types with contrasting disturbance histories, it is concluded that the use of carbon stable isotopes to advance understanding of the dynamics of rainforest and Eucalyptus savanna boundaries will require further development, such as determination of the 14C age and δ13C values of different soil carbon fractions.  相似文献

1. Recent stable isotope studies have revealed that C4 plants play a minor role in aquatic food webs, despite their often widespread distribution and production. We compared the breakdown of C3 (Eucalyptus) and C4 (Saccharum and Urochloa) plant litter in a small rain forest stream and used laboratory feeding experiments to determine their potential contribution to the aquatic food web. 2. All species of litter broke down at a fast rate in the stream, although Urochloa was significantly faster than Eucalyptus and Saccharum. This was consistent with the observed higher total organic nitrogen of Urochloa compared with the other two species. 3. The breakdown of Urochloa and Saccharum was, however, not associated with shredding invertebrates, which were poorly represented in leaf packs compared with the native Eucalyptus. The composition of the invertebrate fauna in packs of Urochloa quickly diverged from that of the other two species. 4. Feeding experiments using a common shredding aquatic insect Anisocentropus kirramus showed a distinct preference for Eucalyptus over both C4 species. Anisocentropus was observed to ingest C4 plant litter, particularly in the absence of other choices, and faecal material collected was clearly of C4 origin, as determined by stable isotope analysis. However, the stable carbon isotope values of the larvae did not shift away from their C3 signature in any of the feeding trials. 5. These data suggest that shredders avoid the consumption of C4 plants, in favour of native C3 species that appear to be of lower food quality (based on C : N ratios). Lower rates of consumption and lack of assimilation of C4 carbon also suggest that shredders may have a limited ability to process this material, even in the absence of alternative litter sources. Accelerated tropical landscape changes occurring over recent decades have produced environmental mosaics comprising remaining isolated green areas and mixed land‐use types. Our objective was to study the effects of alterations in the natural landscape on the species composition and structure of assemblages of Asteraceae and their endophagous insects through comparisons between cerrado (savanna), pastures and Eucalyptus stands. We first investigated whether similarities between assemblages of Asteraceae and their insects varied among land uses or localities. Secondly, we asked whether assemblages of Eucalyptus stands and pastures are subsets of those within the cerrado. We sampled within randomly deployed transects in 15 areas. Land use was found to be an important factor in determining plant composition similarity; however, locality did not exert any significant influence. Pastures were less similar to one another, suggesting high beta diversity. Similarities among insect assemblages were correlated with plant assemblage composition, but not with land use or locality. Species of Tephritidae were distributed along localities independently of land use. High beta diversity in Asteraceae assemblages among cerrados and pastures was supported by nestedness analysis. Plant assemblages in Eucalyptus stands were subsets of cerrado, but pasture assemblages were only partial subsets. A higher degree of nestedness in insect assemblages than in plant assemblages indicated lower beta diversity within these herbivores. Our data indicate that many herbivores are specialized on widely distributed plant genera. Conservation of Asteraceae species and their flower head insects depends not only on maintenance of landscape fragments but also on the correct matching of management form and land use. Such management may contribute to reducing isolation of plant and insect species by increasing the connectivity of remaining cerrado tracts, allowing population maintenance even at low abundances.  相似文献

 We report on the development, genetic characterization and linkage mapping of a battery of SSR (simple sequence repeat) loci in Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla. This study reveals the abundance of SSRs in Eucalyptus, the very high information content of these markers for mapping and individual identification, and demonstrates the feasibility of constructing a comprehensive microsatellite-based linkage map for Eucalyptus. Primer sequence for a set of 20 highly informative EMBRA (Eucalyptus microsatellites from Brazil) loci are made available together with their map position and estimates of the expected heterozygosity and allele size range in these two species. Using genomic library enrichment and anchored-PCR screening prior to sequencing, the efficiency of SSR marker locus development was 63% from sequencing data to operationally useful SSR loci. Absolute transportability between the two species and very high levels of allelic variability and expected heterozygosity (H) were seen at all SSR loci surveyed. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 9 to 26 with an average of 16.3±4.8. The average H of 15 loci was 0.86±0.04, 0.83±0.08 and 0.89±0.04, respectively, for E. urophylla, E. grandis and the combined two-species estimate. In the mapping analysis 16 out of 20 marker loci segregated in a fully informative configuration, allowing the determination of synteny of six homologous linkage groups between the two species. The availability of transportable, multiallelic, PCR-based co-dominant SSR loci represents a dramatic improvement in our ability to carry out detailed population genetic analysis and to search, understand, and manipulate allelic variation at QTLs (quantitative trait loci) in species of Eucalyptus. A review of the slowly accumulating data on artificial hybridization in the genus Aureolaria shows a pattern of unilateral hybridization (or unilateral incompatibility) indicative of a type of homomorphic gametophytic self-incompatibility system, involving multiple S alleles at a single locus, which has been found and genetically analyzed in plants of a few genera of both the Solanaceae and Scrophulariaceae. In such systems, if well developed, the pollen of the self-compatible (SC) plants (in this case the annual A. pedicularia) will not grow on the stigma of the self-incompatible (SI) plants (here the three perennial species of Aureolaria) but the reciprocal cross would be effective and the hybridization would thus be unilateral. The fact that some SI stigma x SC pollen crosses were successful indicates a relatively recent evolutionary age for the less strongly developed (Sc) system in A. pedicularia.  相似文献
