The Scottish Beaver Trial, involving the translocation and release of 16 wild Norwegian beavers (Castor fiber) to Scotland, provides a good example of a ‘One Health’ scientific monitoring approach, with independent monitoring partners on ecology and public health feeding into veterinary health surveillance. Pathogen detection did not prohibit beaver release, although eight beavers were seropositive for Leptospira spp. Six deaths (37.5%) occurred during Rabies quarantine, followed by the death of two animals shortly after release and two wild-born kits due to suspected predation. Two host-specific parasites, the beaver fluke (Stichorchis subtriquetrus) and beaver beetle (Platypsyllus castoris) were also reintroduced.  相似文献

In the enamel microstructure of the incisors, porcupines (Hystricidae) are characterized by multiserial Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB) while beavers (Castoridae) basically have uniserial HSB. In addition, two groups can be differentiated among beavers based on enamel microstructure.Palaeocastor, Steneofiber andCastor show rather typical uniserial HSB. OnlyCastor shows a slight tendency of fusion of the bands. In contrast,Trogontherium andCastoroides are characterized by the regular occurrence of fused bands.Anchitheriomys, having uniserial HSB and a high frequency of fused bands fits well with theTrogontherium group, proving the castorid nature ofAnchitheriomys. Furthermore, the enamel differentiation observed among the Castoridae thus provides an important character for further systematic subdivision of the beavers. In the enamel of the cheek teeth, porcupines can be told apart from beavers as well.Anchitheriomys shows a two-layered schmelzmuster with inner radial enamel like other beavers. Porcupines have thick HSB throughout the enamel layer. This character in the cheek teeth facilitates the separation of isolated beaver teeth from porcupine teeth.  相似文献

  • 1 The Eurasian beaver Castor fiber suffered a drastic reduction in both geographical range and population size, due to human persecution, until the end of the 19th century. After the adoption of protection measures, natural expansion and reintroductions led to the recovery of this species over much of its European range.
  • 2 We review historical events that led to the recovery of beavers in France, and summarize the status of beavers in various river systems. Beaver establishment in France is a story of overall success: several major river systems are presently occupied, so that the species is no longer at risk in France.
  • 3 However, beaver recolonization took place in parallel with increasing human impacts on the environment. In addition to natural limiting factors, anthropogenic factors impeded beaver settlement in many areas. Today, beavers often occupy suboptimal habitats and, as a consequence, come into conflict with human activities. Effective solutions for preventing beaver damage include the restoration of riparian habitats to discourage crop damage and the provision of physical barriers to protect crops.
  • 4 Beaver populations reintroduced into France all originate from the relict Rhône population. However, in recent years, beavers from populations in neighbouring countries have been expanding into north‐eastern France. Therefore, our review of beaver origin and distribution in these countries may contribute to the development of appropriate national management strategies and towards important decisions, e.g. the decision to try to keep Rhône beavers genetically isolated, or to allow populations to mix.
  • 5 The recently discovered presence of North American beavers Castor canadensis in three countries surrounding France has raised an important issue. This species may out‐compete C. fiber in places where the species come into contact. A programme based on field‐trapping sessions and genetic analyses has recently been initiated in some western countries in order to eradicate this non‐native species.

A 483-bp cDNA was isolated from sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) head kidney leukocytes, dicentracin, using PCR primers designed from conserved moronecidin domains. Gene bank analysis revealed that dicentracin cDNA belongs to the moronecidin family. As deduced from alignment with Morone chrysops moronecidin, the precursor of 79 aa appeared to be composed of a signal peptide of 22 aa, followed by the mature AMP (antimicrobial peptide) of 22 aa named dicentracin, and a C-terminal extension of 35 aa. Dicentracin precursor displayed 3 aa substitutions with other moronecidin sequence but none in the mature peptide sequence. Using in situ hybridization assay, dicentracin gene expression was observed in 68–71% of peripheral blood leukocytes, kidney leukocytes or peritoneal cavity leukocytes without significant statistical differences. Dicentracin mRNA was observed in most of the granulocytes, as well as in monocytes from both peripheral blood and head kidney, and in macrophages from peritoneal cavity. No expression was observed in thrombocytes or in lymphocytes.  相似文献

The respiratory burst of leukocytes isolated from sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) pronephros, peritoneal cavity (P.C.), spleen and blood, was measured by a chemiluminescence (CL) assay after stimulation with β-glucan. The CL response by P.C. and pronephros leukocytes was significantly higher than that expressed by a similar number of cells separated from spleen and blood. This probably reflects the observation that the proportion of macrophages and neutrophils was highest in the populations of leukocytes from peritoneal cavity and pronephros. Comparative observations showed a higher degree of yeast phagocytosis by leukocytes taken from peritoneal cavity than the pronephros. Moreover phagocytic index evaluated by microscopical observations, indicated that peritoneal macrophages internalised more yeast cells than neutrophils (identified by the peroxidase reaction). Scanning electron microscopy observations were also carried out.Inhibition experiments by a myeloperoxidase inhibitor sodium azide, iodonium-diphenyl-chloride which inhibits NADPH-oxidase, and exogenous superoxide dismutase, which catalyses O−2 dismutation to H2O2, supported the correlation between CL and respiratory burst. Treatment with ouabain and DNP suggested that in this response, Ca++ pump channels and calmodulin are involved in a metabolic energy-dependent pathway.  相似文献

Early recruitment of the peritoneal cell population was observed during migration of newly excysted juvenile flukes. The peritoneal lavages were examined for T cells, cytotoxic NK cells (CNK) and free radicals production of rats at an early stage of infection by Fasciola hepatica. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were infected with 50 metacercariae of F. hepatica and non-infected controls were euthanized 2, 4 and 7 days post infection (d.p.i.), respectively. The peritoneal fluid of experimental animals was analyzed by flow cytometry to estimate cell phenotypes. The peritoneal areas were infiltrated by inflammatory cells, particularly from numerous neutrophils, eosinophils and CD4+ lymphocytes, which were significantly higher for infected rats than non-infected. CNK cells dominated in the peritoneal fluid of infected rats as early as 2 d.p.i. However, after 4 d.p.i. there was a decreased level of CNK cells which may indicate a change from a cytotoxic natural killer (NK) to a regulatory NK response. The challenged group generated very high in vivo levels of inducible nitric oxide (NO) from eosinophils. Superoxide expression was very high in macrophages and neutrophils compared to the uninfected control. In conclusion, our studies suggest that early F. hepatica infection could directly affect lymphoid cells and generate a high in vivo NO production by eosinophils in the peritoneal cavity. Moreover juvenile flukes could stimulate the macrophages and neutrophils to generate H2O2 radicals. The host parasite interactions resulting from immune response regulation by effector cells and immune evasion are discussed.  相似文献

From October 2002 till April 2003, 194 feces samples and 28 liver samples of red deer shot in the Republic of Croatia territory were examined to determine the prevalence of Fascioloides magna in this game population. The majority of study samples were obtained from animals originating from the east part of Croatia, and only a minor proportion from animals originating from the central and west parts and littoral of Croatia. F. magna eggs were detected in 67/194 (34.53%) feces samples and F. magna adults in 8/28 (28.57%) liver samples. The majority of invaded red deer originated from the east part of Croatia, Baranya region, where F. magna eggs were found in 64/120 (53.33%) and F. magna adults in 8/15 (53.33%) animals. F. magna eggs were detected in only 3/74 (4.05%) animals originating from the other parts of Croatia.  相似文献

The role of neutrophils in mediating host inflammation was examined in mice vaccinated with living third-stage infective hookworm larvae (L3). Mice were vaccinated by oral immunization with 500 L3 (Ancylostoma caninum) once every 2 weeks for a total of three immunizations. The vaccinated mice were then challenged intraperitoneally with 2000 L3, 1 week after the final immunization. To stimulate peritoneal production of neutrophils, 2 ml of 2% glycogen were injected intraperitoneally at 16 h prior to the challenge infection. Neutrophils were found to comprise 85% of the peritoneal cell population. L3 from the challenge infection were collected and then examined at timed intervals by inverted light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Greater than a fivefold increase in the total numbers of peritoneal cells was noted in the vaccinated mice as compared to unvaccinated mice. In the peritoneal cavity of vaccinated mice, the neutrophils adhered to the L3 within 2 h, and over 55% of the L3 were surround by clusters of neutrophils to form a sausage-like sheath 4 h later. At 24–72 h after challenge, almost all of the L3 recovered from the vaccinated mice were covered with thick clusters of cells. Both SEM and TEM demonstrated extensive ultrastructural damage to the L3. In contrast, the L3 recovered from the unvaccinated mice appeared to be unaffected by neutrophils. These studies suggest that neutrophils, like macrophages, can have an important role as effector cells in L3-vaccinated mice.  相似文献

To determine whether some of the B. burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies associate with fat dormouse as a reservoir host, we investigated the prevalence of infection in questing animals. A total of 45 adult fat dormice (30 female and 15 male) were captured by hunters during their hunting season in the region of Gorski Kotar, Croatia. Dead animals were aseptically dissected, and the urinary bladder tissue was used for isolation attempt and for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction. Out of 45 DNA samples extracted from urine bladder tissue, we found four (8.88%) to be polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positive. The RFLP analysis of the PCR product after cleavage with DraI and MseI distinguished between the three major genospecies: B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. garinii and B. afzelii. All positive samples were typed as B. afzelii with a unique DraI or MseI pattern. The results of the analysis of urinary bladder tissue samples culture for the presence of Borrelia were negative. Results showed that a prevalence of the Borrelia infection among population of fat dormice indicated their epizootiological involvement as a reservoir of Borrelia spirochetes. Furthermore, this work is an initial step in the investigation of the molecular epidemiology/epizootiology of Lyme borreliosis in Croatia.  相似文献

Increasing evidence suggests that climate change affects bird breeding phenology and other life-history traits of wildlife. This study is based on the mean spring temperatures (February, March, April) and laying dates of first eggs of the marsh tit Parus palustris. We collected data from 1984 to 2004 for the Mokrice area in NW Croatia. Correlation between laying date and mean spring temperatures was significant. The relationship between mean laying date (y) and air temperature (x) can be expressed as y = 44.69 − 2.08x. Results indicate that spring temperatures are a good predictor of timing of laying eggs. Such long-term data could than be used in order to assess the effects on biological systems if human activities influence climate.  相似文献

Habitat selectivity by European beaver (Castor fiber L., 1758) was studied in 226 km of river channels during their colonization of the Morava River basin (the Czech Republic), which had not been occupied by beavers for hundreds of years. The colonization started after initial reintroductions in 1991 and 1992. Annual increases in colonization of the river system from 1995 to 2007 were 15.5 ± 9.4 SD km year−1 and varied greatly between these years (min 0 km, max 33 km). Beavers appeared to be following a dispersal pattern, in which distant sites are often colonized before close-by sites. The selection of habitat variables during the colonization process varied. In the early phase of colonization, there were many areas with optimal habitat that were not occupied by beavers, and habitat selection appeared chaotic. After this early phase, the most significant habitat variable related to beaver occupation was shown to be the presence of willow (Salix spp.) species. In the later phases, the beaver population expanded into suboptimal habitat. Settlement distance from roads, railways, and urbanized areas became less. When comparing the generalized linear models, a model from the winter of 2003/2004 had the best overall accuracy and showed excellent agreement among observed and fitted values (Cohen’s κ = 0.75). The model suggests that beavers established their home ranges at first in optimal habitat, which had not been occupied before and then subsequently in suboptimal/marginal areas.  相似文献

The fat dormouse (Glis glis) is a traditional game species in the Republic of Croatia. Although today the fat dormouse is not frequently caught as game, it is still a source of animal protein in human nutrition in certain rural areas of Croatia. In this paper the chemical analysis of fat dormouse meat is presented. The average values for the quantity of water, fat, protein and ash in dormouse meat are comparable with the chemical composition of the meat of rabbits and brown hares, except for the important fact that rabbit and hare meat contains a greater quantity of fat on average. According to our results, the meat of fat dormice can be categorised as dietary food, characterised by a small percentage of fat (mean 2.83%) and a high amount of protein (mean 21.01%).  相似文献

European beavers (Castor fiber) from two regions were examined to identify exposure to persistent environmental contaminants. A reference group was comprised of six animals from the Forest Division of Srokowo, and an exposed group was comprised of five animals from the vicinity of a former military airport operated in 1918–1986—both from Warmia land in Poland. 137Cs in beavers' muscles was considered negligible for the overall condition and reproduction of the animals. Elevated levels of Cd and Pb occurred in the kidneys and liver of beavers from a former military airport area. dl-PCBs were found in the liver of all specimens, and pCB no. 118 was a dominant compound. Beavers as animals living both in water and land habitats can be good bioindicators of heavy metal environmental pollution caused by human activity. Despite the significant contamination of former military sites in northeastern Poland, the beaver population shows an upward trend, reflecting the excellent adaptation of this species to a changing environment.  相似文献

The Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) represents an uncommon example of an endangered species in which the restoration programs proved a spectacular success and led to enormous spatial and demographic expansion. Documented reintroduction of beavers in Poland has been conducted using animals of the eastern European origin, most likely derived from the eastern mtDNA lineage. However demographic and spatial expansion of beavers from Germany, which represent the western lineage, may have led to admixture of these two genetically distinct entities in Poland. We detected significant genetic differentiation between the populations from W and NE Poland both in mitochondrial DNA control region and microsatellites, but also substantial admixture including apparent first-generation migrants between regions. Our results indicate that beavers from the western mtDNA lineage have contributed considerably to the Polish population, particularly in W Poland. As there have been no adequately documented translocations of beavers from the western European populations to Poland, the observed situation appears to result from natural migration or range expansion from the west. In contrast to previous findings we detected a substantial diversity in mtDNA control region, which indicates that either the variation in relict populations has been underestimated, or that additional relict beaver populations survived at the end of the 19th century in Poland and Germany as indicated by considerable similarity of ancient and extant mtDNA haplotypes. The implications of our findings for beaver conservation and management are discussed.  相似文献

The metric variability of the teeth of Castor fiber Linné, 1758 and Castor canadensis Kuhl, 1820 with age are assessed. The ages of the studied specimens of C. fiber range from about 2 months to 16–17 years. Measurements of all teeth are given, and show a large range of size variation over all ages. The greatest size ranges can be observed for incisors, premolars, and third molars. Size variations of the fossil beavers Steneofiber eseri v. Meyer, 1846, Steneofiber castorinus Pomel, 1847, Anchitheriomys suevicus Schlosser, 1884, and Trogontherium cuvieri Fischer de Waldheim, 1809 are compared with those of C. fiber, and are of the same range and magnitude. It seems that it is nearly impossible to age beavers exactly with non‐invasive methods on the basis of tooth morphology, namely by the form and pattern of enamel islands on the chewing surface of the cheek teeth. Therefore, in conclusion, it is suggested that the observed variability in the size of fossil beaver teeth should be interpreted as changes with age in accordance with the overall size range in C. fiber. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 926–936.  相似文献
