In this study, we investigated the capabilities for adaptation to reduced salinity in the larvae from spring and summer spawnings of the same population of the Pacific mussel Crenomytilus grayanus. Spring larvae normally develop and grow when salinity is reduced to 24‰. The lower salinity limit for summer larvae is 20‰. The differences in adaptive capabilities between the spring and summer larvae may be due to the different temperatures of spawning and cultivation of the larvae: 11 °C in the spring and 22 °C in the summer.  相似文献

Restriction-endonuclease analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of the unisexual M. clarkhubbsi complex and close sexual relatives indicated that the unisexual complex arose through multiple, nonreciprocal hybridizations involving females of M. peninsulae. High-resolution analyses using restriction endonucleases that cleave at 4-bp sites revealed mtDNA sequence diversity that was low among unisexuals but high among individuals of M. peninsulae. The identification of M. peninsulae as a parent of the unisexuals conflicts with some details of previous allozyme comparisons. One possibility is that the unisexuals were derived from hybridization involving M. beryllina and a recently extinct form of M. peninsulae. In contrast to the unisexuals, contemporary hybrids of M. peninsulae and M. beryllina are formed by reciprocal matings. The origins of extant unisexual lineages from nonreciprocal hybridizations, together with their low mtDNA diversity relative to the maternal ancestor, implies strong constraints on origins of unisexuality via hybridization. Data on reproduction by contemporary F1 hybrids reveal one form of genetic/developmental constraint: M. peninsulae and M. beryllina may now have diverged beyond the point where the hybrid origin of new unisexual lineages is possible.  相似文献

The semiterrestrial crab Neohelice (=Chasmagnathus) granulata (Dana 1851) is a predominant species in brackish salt marshes, mangroves and estuaries. Its larvae are exported towards coastal marine waters. In order to estimate the limits of salinity tolerance constraining larval retention in estuarine habitats, we exposed in laboratory experiments freshly hatched zoeae to six different salinities (5–32‰). At 5‰, the larvae survived for a maximum of 2 weeks, reaching only exceptionally the second zoeal stage, while 38% survived to the megalopa stage at 10‰. Shortest development and negligible mortality occurred at all higher salt concentrations. These observations show that the larvae of N. granulata can tolerate a retention in the mesohaline reaches of estuaries, with a lower limit of ca. 10–15‰. Maximum survival at 25‰ suggests that polyhaline conditions rather than an export to oceanic waters are optimal for successful larval development of this species. In another experiment, we tested the capability of the last zoeal stage (IV) for reimmigration from coastal marine into brackish waters. Stepwise reductions of salinity during this stage allowed for moulting to the megalopa at 4–10‰. Although survival was at these conditions reduced and development delayed, these results suggest that already the zoea-IV stage is able to initiate the reimmigration into estuaries. After further salinity reduction, megalopae survived in this experiment for up to >3 weeks in freshwater, without moulting to juvenile crabs. In a similar experiment starting from the megalopa stage, successful metamorphosis occurred at 4–10‰, and juvenile growth continued in freshwater. Although these juvenile crabs showed significantly enhanced mortality and smaller carapace width compared to a seawater control, our results show that the late larval and early juvenile stages of N. granulata are well adapted for successful recruitment in brackish and even limnetic habitats.  相似文献

Postlarvae of two atherinid species, Menidia menidia (L.) and Menidia beryllina (Cope), were tested in two 14-day experiments at four densities of fish to determine effects of interspecific versus intraspecific competition for food. In one experiment, when M. menidia was slightly larger than M. beryllina (simulating a slightly earlier hatching time in nature) M. menidia exhibited a clear competitive advantage over M. beryllina, as demonstrated by covariance analysis of fish biomass change on fish density. In the second experiment, when M. beryllina was larger than M. menidia, neither species showed competitive advantage. The results suggest that M. menidia has an inherently superior ability to compete for food. Results of the experiment in which M. menidia was the larger species indicate the selective pressures which could have caused the two species to evolve spawning times ≈1 month apart. In another set of experiments, post-larval and juvenile M. menidia and M. beryllina were fed wet weight rations of Artemia nauplii ranging from 10–640% of initial body weight per day during a series of three 10-day feeding trials. As Menidia menidia grew, they required a smaller percentage of body weight per day in food for maximum growth (640, 320, and 160% for the three feeding trials). The same trend was observed with M. beryllina, although the percentages (160, 160, and 80%) were much less than those for M. menidia. Menidia menidia also required more food per day (20–135% of body weight) as a minimum ration for survival and growth than did M. beryllina (5–60%). The explanation for these differences may be that M. menidia in nature hatch earlier in the year, when Zooplankton is more abundant, than do M. beryllina. The two species have apparently evolved different feeding requirements as adaptations to the different food availabilities that they encounter.  相似文献

The effect of salinity on survival, osmoregulation and oxygen consumption was determined on coastal young-of-the-year (YOY) largemouth bassMicropterus salmoides by exposing them to saline media of 0, 4, 8, 12, and 16‰. The data indicated a decrease in survival with longer exposure time and increased salinity. There were no significant differences in plasma osmolality with increased salinity from 0 to 8‰ but osmolality was significantly greater at 12‰ than 0‰ and osmolality from 16‰ was greater than all other salinity treatments. No significant differences in hematocrits were detected between 0 and 12‰, but hematocrits in the 16‰ treatment were significantly reduced compared to all other treatments. YOYM. salmoides are good osmoregulators up to 8‰ but increased salinity caused measurable osmoregulatory dysfunction. Oxygen consumption rate increased significantly as salinity increased, suggesting that adaptation of this species to hypersaline media is in part accompanied by increased energy expenditure.  相似文献

Synopsis The spawning periodicity and mating behavior of a northern population of the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, was studied both in the field (Salem Harbor, Massachusetts) and in laboratory experiments. Spawning in the field coincided with new and full moons. Under conditions of unlimited food availability in artificial outdoor pools that received natural celestial illumination or in indoor aquaria receiving no evening illumination, spawning occurred every 1–3 days rather than fortnightly. These results suggest that tidal influences are a primary factor that synchronizes spawning in M. menidia. Published reports of diel time of spawning in both marine and freshwater species of Menidia indicate a generic tendency to spawn during mid-morning. This pattern coupled with high tides that cover suitable spawning substrates during mid-morning only at fortnightly intervals could account for the semilunar spawning cycle in marine populations of Menidia. Although general characteristics of the reproductive ecology of M. menidia in Massachusetts were similar to a thoroughly studied population in South Carolina, several differences were evident. The breeding season was shorter in Massachusetts (late; April–June), and occurred over a much lower range of temperatures (9–21°C). Intensity and frequency of spawning was correlated with the height of high tide. Eggs were deposited only on mats of intertidal, filamentous algae rather than on roots or stems of Spartina alterniflora or other intertidal vegetation. Promiscuous spawning occurred in small, highly male-dominated groups of fish, primarily after the tide had begun to recede, and often at the water's edge. No predation on spawning adults was observed but the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, fed daily on developing embryos during high tide. Populations that vary across ecological gradients or that have invaded novel habitats are important to elucidate the association between adaptive divergence and gene flow, factors that may play an important role in speciation of silverside fishes. The inland silverside, Menidia beryllina, is an ideal organism for this kind of research, displaying a great diversity in morphology among freshwater and coastal brackish habitats. Using a combination of geometric morphometrics and mitochondrial (mt) DNA, we investigated patterns of variation within and among the nominal freshwater Menidia audens and coastal M. beryllina, spanning the transition from freshwater to tidally influenced semi-brackish waters of the lower Mississippi River to brackish waters of the Lake Pontchartrain estuary. Although we found no evidence for a phylogenetic split between M. audens and M. beryllina, our results indicate that significant genetic divergence corresponds with body shape differences among the two, with a clear distinction at the interface of freshwater and brackish water. Patterns in mtDNA suggest that freshwater populations referred to as M. audens are of recent origin with evidence for habitat-based divergence compared to coastal populations referred to as M. beryllina. Our findings add to a growing body of evidence that ecological shifts, following colonization of novel habitats, may promote rapid adaptive divergence and reduced gene flow among silverside populations in adjacent environmental regimes.  相似文献

The study deals with the effect of changes in salinity from 32 to 4‰ (at an interval of 4‰) on the growth, chlorophyll a and carotenoid contents, and cell size of the benthic alga Attheya ussurensis (Bacillariophyta). A. ussurensis showed high tolerance to reduced salinity and ability to adapt to salinity changes from 16 to 12‰. In this salinity range, the cells restored their shapes, sizes, and physiological functions. The number of cells and photosynthetic pigment content were highest at a salinity reduction to 24‰. At 8‰, algal cells remained alive, but the process of cell division was inhibited; as a result, the number of cells was significantly lower than in the control, the cells did not restore their sizes and shapes and remained deformed until the end of the experiment. A drop in salinity to 4‰ caused a complete loss of cell viability of A. ussurensis within a day of exposure to this factor.  相似文献

Multiple, sympatric morphotypes of rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) are known in Lake Utopia, New Brunswick. The largest, ‘giant’ form is predominantly a piscivore, the smaller, ‘dwarf’ form are predominantly planktivores, and there is an intermediate body-sized form. The forms exhibit some genetic variability, but it is body size that best defines morphotypes, trophic status, and spawning behaviour. We compared egg size, spawning date, incubation time, size at hatching, and daily and annual growth to determine when divergence in body size occurs among morphotypes. Giant form larvae hatched earlier and grew faster during their first year. Dwarf and intermediate form larvae displayed inter-annual variability in degree of overlap and divergence in growth which occurred in their first growing season or at age 1+ or 2+. We conclude that earlier hatching, early growth trajectories, and later niche shifting are linked to the persistence of morphotypes, i.e., the process is controlled by the environment and sustained to some degree by spawning segregation.  相似文献

Synopsis Playback experiments conducted in the field and the laboratory demonstrated the use of sound interception in bicolor damselfish,Pomacentrus partitus. Two courtship sounds produced by male bicolors: the ‘chirp’ which occurs at the initiation of courting and the ‘grunt’ which occurs near the termination, just prior to spawning, were found to hold different meanings to intercepting male competitors. Males responded to grunt playback with directional swimming towards the sound source and increased courtship behavior. No directional response was observed during chirp playback. The grunt sound appears to indicate that a spawn-ready female is present near the sound source. Males therefore move towards it, likely to interfere with the imminent spawning or to gain a possible spawning partner. Such is not observed in response to chirps, as little advantage would be gained by moving to the source of a sound which is known to serve as an ‘advertisement’ or ‘territorial keep-out’ signal. Thus, upon intercepting a neighbor's chirps, males exhibit courting within their own territory, or directly court a nearby female.  相似文献

The main objective of the current study was to determine an optimal dosage of commercial carp pituitary extract (CPE) of the conventional heteroplastic hypophysation technique to induce spawning in the wild caught striped mojarra broodstock Eugerres plumieri under laboratory conditions. We also describe trials testing saline acclimation regimes (changes from 10‰ to 30‰) prior to hormonal induction. For saline acclimation, three treatments were performed: first and second treatments began 1-day after conditioning of broodstock fish with a total duration of the saline changes lasting 1-day and 2-days, respectively. The third treatment began 30-days after conditioning with a 7-day saline regime. After reaching 30‰, all fish from the first and second treatments died after the fourth and ninth days, respectively; while the fishes in the third treatment survived more than two years. These fish remain on public exhibit in the “Mundo Marino” Aquarium, Santa Marta, Colombia. Four treatments of hormonal induction were tested on females using a total concentration of 5-mg of CPE per kg of body weight: first, second and third treatments were applied in two hormonal doses that corresponded to 10%–90%, 30%–70% and 40%–60%, respectively, with time intervals between doses of 14-h for the first and second treatment and of 12-h for the third treatment. The fourth treatment was applied in four hormonal doses that it corresponded to 20%–20%–30%–30% with 12-h time intervals between doses. Only the fishes of the fourth treatment resisted the induction, continued to live and reached spawning artificially. Water temperature remained at 28 ± 1°C and at 30‰ salinity during the study. The “dry” method of fertilization was used. The fertilized eggs were incubated at 30‰ and 35‰ salinities. These eggs reached the Morula early stage, but were later attacked by protozoan. These results suggest that fast changes of saline and limited hormonal dosages do not offer effective results in Eugerres plumieri. This work provided fundamental procedures for the culture and maintenance of live broodstock for striped mojarra in saltwater and/or coastal lagoon habitats and provides an effective and viable dosage of CPE for artificial spawning and commercial production in this species.  相似文献

Siphonophores are exclusively marine cnidaria and their predatory role in plankton food-webs is well recognised. In this study, we analyse the structure and the spatial extent of siphonophore assemblages in relation to changes in freshwater outflows and food availability in the southern Gulf of Mexico during a high (October) and a low (April) outflow periods. A total of 149 samples were collected using a 505 μm multiple closing net at 1–6 levels (0–100 m) of the water column, depending on the bathymetry. Data on siphonophore species biovolumes (ml 100 m−3) were treated by means of the Bray-Curtis Dissimilarity Index, and two distinctive assemblages were identified: the ‘inner’ and the ‘outer’ assemblages, located over the inner and outer shelves. Temperature, salinity, zooplankton biomass, and siphonophore species were included in a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to identify the factors associated with each assemblage. Geographical distribution of the assemblages practically remained the same during both seasons and its cross-shelf variability was stronger than the vertical one. Seasonally, diversity values were higher in October, when the highest river discharges occur. Spatially, the lowest diversity and mean siphonophore biovolumes values were registered in the ‘inner assemblage’, where the highest and lowest salinity values were recorded. We suggest that even when extreme salinity values (>36.5 or <34) might depress siphonophore populations in the coastal area, enough food availability in the concerned areas might mitigate the negative effect of salinity, since a positive and significant (p < 0.05) relationship was found between siphonophores biovolume and zooplankton biomass. Bassia bassensis, Diphyes dispar and Enneanogum hyalinum, present in both assemblages during both seasons, were able to survive in a wide range of salinity values, following perhaps, their prey. All the 23 species here registered were found in the ‘outer assemblage’; however, Abylopsis eschscholtzi, Chelophyes appendiculata and Diphyes bojani were more associated with the ‘outer’ group according to the PCA results. Enneagonum hyalinum was the only species frequently encountered and abundant in the ‘inner assemblage’ during both seasons and, supporting previous observations, this species might be considered as an indicator of nearshore waters.  The spawning grounds of a cottid fish, Trachidermus fasciatus, were investigated off the mouth of the Kashima River in Ariake Bay from January to March, 1996–1999. The nests were found about 1.1–2.3 km off the mouth of the river, where the bottom salinity was 8‰–21‰ at low tides. Oyster shells were mainly found to be used as nests. A male, a pair, a male and egg clusters, a pair and egg clusters, or a female were found inside shells. The average number of guarded egg clusters per male in shells was 1.3 ± 0.4. We analysed plant growth, ion accumulation, leaf water relations, and gas exchange of Avicennia germinans (L.) L. subjected to a long-term, controlled salinity gradient from 0 to 55 ‰. Growth and leaf area were affected by salinity higher than 10 ‰. As salinity increased, the predawn leaf water potential (Ψw) and leaf osmotic potential (Ψs) decreased. Leaf Ψw was at least −0.32 MPa lower than the Ψw of solution. Na+ and K+ ions explained about 78 % of decrease in Ψs. K+ tissue water concentration decreased by more than 60 % in all salinity treatments as compared with those grown at 0 ‰. Inversely, Na+ concentration in tissue water increased with nutrient solution salinity. The maximum net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) decreased by 68 and 82 %, respectively, as salinity increased from 0 to 55 ‰; the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) followed the same trend. The P N as a function of C i showed that both the initial linear slope and upper plateau of the P N vs. C i curve were markedly affected by high salinity (40 and 55 ‰).  相似文献

Porphyra vietnamensis Tanaka & Pham-Hoang Ho is a tropical species of high potential for farming. Studies of the life cycle have been conducted for many years but have not been successful until recently. Mature thalli were collected from Songkhla, in the southern part of Thailand, and were used to obtain Conchocelis in the laboratory in Bangkok. Conchocelis in shells as well as free-floating filaments could be observed after one week of incubation at 25 °C, 25 salinity and 350–500 lux light intensity, and covered the culture shell surface within 2 months. Conchosporangia were formed after being incubated for 10 days at 30 °C, 20 salinity under light intensities of 350–500 lux with a photoperiod of 12 hours a day. Induction of conchospore release was achieved by lowering the temperature to 25 °C and the salinity to 10–15 and increasing the light intensity to 800–1000 lux. Liberated conchospores germinated into young thalli which became mature after 70 days.  相似文献

Acclimation responses of the red alga Gracilaria tenuistipitata var. liui collected on the northwest coast of Philippines were determined in laboratory setups and outdoor cultivation tanks in Haifa, Israel. Growth under laboratory conditions was influenced by all three variables studied, namely, temperature (20 or 30 °C), salinity (20, 30 or39‰) and seawater pH (6.5, 7.0, 8.0 or ≥ 9.0). In 250 mL flasks lacking pH control growth was influenced by temperature only at 20 ‰, whereas at 39 ‰, growth rates were similar at 20 or 30 °C. In 500 mL cylinders in which pH was controlled, growth rates were significantly different at a pH of 6.5 and 7.0 for all salinities, with maximal rates occurring in 39 ‰. At pH 8.0, and above, growth rates between salinities were similar and reduced to approximately 50% at a pH of 9.0 compared to rates at a pH of 6.5. Photosynthesis responses generally resembled growth responses both, in 250 mL and 500 mL cultures. In 40-L outdoor tanks, weekly growth and agar yields were apparently enhanced by increasing light intensities (up to full sunlight) and nutrient concentrations (up to 0.2 mM PO3 2- and 2.0 mM NH4 +), and rates averaged four times higher than rates determined in the smaller flask cultures. This study shows broad salinity tolerance of G. tenuistipitata var. liui and its ability to sustain growth rates that are among the highest measured for Gracilaria spp. in outdoor cultures. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Effects of temperature and salinity on the growth of the two agarophytes, Gracilaria verrucosa (Hudson) Papenfuss and Gracilaria chorda Holmes were examined in Korea. Both species grew over a wide range of temperatures (10–30 C) and salinities (5–35‰), and grew well at 17–30 C and a salinity of 15–30‰. In culture, G. verrucosa grew faster than G. chorda and their maximum growth rates were 4.95% day−1 (30 C, 25‰) and 4.47% day−1 (at 25 C, 25‰), respectively. In the field population the maximum growth and fertility of G. chorda were observed in summer. The growth rate of G. verrucosa was slightly higher than that of G. chorda for 2 weeks on the cultivation rope and in culture but it was much lower after being contaminated with epiphytes. The biomass of the epiphytes was 0.82 g dry wt. per host plant in G. verrucosa and 0.001 g in G. chorda. G. chorda exhibited resistance to epiphytism and grew 7 times in length and the dry weight increased 15 times after 55 days. In conclusion, G. chorda appears to be a good agarophyte with a fast growth rate and resistance to epiphytesm, and compared with G. verrucosa, has good potential for commercial cultivation.  相似文献

Commercial catches of the ‘major carps’ (grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella, silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus and bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis) in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River have declined precipitously since construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). To assess specific environmental effects, young-of-the-year major carps were collected below TGD in the Yangtze River at Jianli (larvae) and E’zhou (juveniles) and in the Dongting Lake (juveniles) during June–August 2007. Lapillar otoliths were analyzed to determine early growth. There were no discernible growth increments in otoliths for a majority of the larvae (38 of 63 grass carp and 40 of 47 silver carp), while increments were evident in otoliths formed in the larval stage for all the juveniles, indicating that larvae without discernible increments failed to recruit to the juvenile stage. Back-calculated hatch dates of major carps were between 31 May and 24 July. The initiation of the spawning season was delayed about 1 month compared to pre-TGD records. Larval growth rates, as reflected by otolith-increment width, were lower at Dongting Lake (closer to TGD) than at E’zhou (farther from TGD), indicating that TGD-moderated effects on early growth and development of carps are more apparent for fishes hatched nearer to the dam. The delay in spawning and decreased early growth may partly explain the recent decline of the major carp resources in the middle and lower Yangtze River.  相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) and diel feeding rhythm of two cladocerans, Daphnia longispina and Bosmina coregoni were investigated at the pelagic area of Lake Toya (Hokkaido, Japan) in May, August and October 1992. Both species performed nocturnal DVM. The amplitude of DVM, however, became smaller from May to October. Such seasonal variations in DVM could not be explained by light penetration and/or water temperature. The two species had a clear feeding rhythm; they fed at night in May and October but also after sunrise in August. These feeding rhythms appeared to be related to the light-dark cycle, but were not necessarily associated with their DVM. We suggest that the diel feeding rhythm and DVM are regulated independently by light cues.  相似文献
