There is some controversy concerning the presence of steryl glycosides and acylated steryl glycosides in eucaryotic algae. These two classes of sterol compounds were investigated in species belonging to the three major groups of eucaryotic algae: green algae (Ulva gigantea, Cladophora rupestris), brown algae (Fucus vesiculosus, Ascophyllum nodosum), and red algae (Rhodymenia palmata, Porphyridium sp.). All these algae contain both steryl glycosides and acylated steryl glycosides. The sterol components of these compounds vary according to the alga but they are always the same as the free sterols of the alga in question. The most common sugar moiety is glucose. In the acylated steryl glycosides, the fatty acid is mainly palmitic acid. The percentage of these compounds (as a percentage of the total sterol content) is often low. 相似文献

Transition temperatures of phosphatidylsulfocholines (PSCs; di-14 : 0-, di-16 : 0-, di-18 : 0- and di-18 : 1-) were compared with those of the corresponding phosphatidylcholines (PCs) using the techniques of differential scanning calorimetry, fluorescent polarization with diphenylhexatriene (DPH) and cis- and trans- parinaric acids as probes, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) with 5-doxyl stearic acid as probe. Liposomal dispersions of the sulfonium analogs showed the typical multibilayer structure by electron microscopy (EM) and were in general very similar in physical behaviour to those of the corresponding PCs. However, the fully hydrated saturated PSCs consistently showed sharp main transitions 2–4°C above those of the corresponding PCs, by all three techniques used; the unsaturated PSC (di-18 : 1) had a transition 2–3°C below that of di-18 : 1-PC and only the di-14 : 0-PSC and di-18 : 1-PSC showed a well-defined pretransition. Fluorescence polarization studies with cis- and trans-parinaric acids showed that the PSC bilayers were less ordered than the corresponding PC bilayers in both the gel and liquid crystalline states.These results provide a rationale for the observed ability of the sulfonium analogs to substitute for PC in some natural membranes. 相似文献

A relationship between the initial rate of liposome swelling, d(1/A)/dt and the reciprocal of the lipid concentration of the liposomes has been derived and then utilized to describe the osmotic swelling behavior of serially diluted liposomes and chloroplasts exposed to hypertonic urea solutions. The slopes of plots of d(1/A)/dt vs. the reciprocal of the lipid concentration of liposomes were not affected by differences in the initial absorbance of phosphatidylcholine-sterol bilayers, and were used to assess the ability of sterols to reduce the initial rates of urea permeation through dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayers in the liquid-crystalline state. Multilamellar liposomes and sonicated vesicles were prepared from dimyristoylphosphatidylsulfocholine (DMPSC), in which the quaternary ammonium group of choline is replaced by -S+(CH3)2. Cholesterol reduced the initial rate of osmotic urea penetration into liposomes and the rate of 6-carboxyfluorescein efflux from vesicles at 35°C. The effect of cholesterol on bilayers of phosphatidylsulfocholine and phosphatidylcholine was very similar, suggesting that no strict structural requirements need be met in the choline moiety for lecithin-cholesterol interaction. The sulfonium analog could thus functionally replace phosphatidylcholine in natural membranes. 相似文献

Interactions have been studied between juvenile plants of green, brown, and red marine algae and 31 diatom clones isolated from a variety of marine eulittoral habitats. The interactions seemed to be of an individual nature for both juvenile plants and diatoms. Germlings of Ulva lactuca L. mostly showed enhanced growth, often with significant increases in population sizes of the accompanying diatoms. Fucus spiralis L. germlings were mainly unaffected by growth in the presence of the diatom clones, but growth of the diatoms was often stimulated. Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. germlings were little affected, whilst the accompanying diatoms were less noticeably affected than with Fucus spiralis. Germlings of F. vesiculosus L. often showed growth inhibitions in the presence of diatoms, with many diatom populations showing enhanced growth. Similarly, the discoid encrusting sporelings of Chondrus crispus Stackh. showed growth inhibitions where there were measurable interactions, although the accompanying diatoms usually failed to show growth stimulations. The discoid sporelings of Gigartina stellata (Stackh. in With.) Batt. showed high mortalities, usually with marked increases in population sizes of accompanying diatoms. 相似文献

Two types of long-wave fluorescence bands with similar band shape occur at room temperature in various algae: FII700 and FI715. FII700 occurs in a limited number of algae, follows PS II transients, increases with culture age and is moderately increased by cooling to 83 K. FI715 occurs in most algae, especially Anabaena, but much less in most diatoms and Tribonema. It does not follow PS II transients, does not increase with culture age and is much increased by cooling to 83 K.An interpretation for the characteristics of FII700 and FI715 is given. 相似文献

A sulfonium analog of lecithin has been reported to replace the ubiquitous phosphatidyl choline in a non-photosynthetic diatom, Nitzschia alba. The structure of this sulfonium analog has now been established by chemical synthesis using the following methods: (i) condensation of sn-3-phosphatidic acid (dimyristoyl-, dipalmitoyl-, distearoyl-, distearoyl-, and dioleoyl-) with sulfocholine chloride in the presence of triisopropylbenzenesulfonylchloride in chloroform-pyridine (9:1); and (ii) phosphorylation of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycerol with monophenylphosphoryl-dichloridate followed by a reaction with sulfocholine in the presence of pyridine and finally removal of the blocking phenyl group by catalytic hydrogenolysis. The desired synthetic products were obtained in overall yields of 50-70% and 11% for methods (i) and (ii), respectively, and were characterized by elemental analyses; infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, and mass spectrometry; optical rotation; and thin-layer chromatography mobilities. Comparison of the synthetic analogs with the natural sulfolecithin showed them to be identical, except for the nature of the fatty acid chains, thus establishing the natural product as sn-3-phosphatidyl sulfocholine. 相似文献

The well-known reduction in the permeability properties of liposomes of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) by sterols has also been demonstrated for its sulfonium analog (DMPSC) in which the N+(CH3)3 group of choline is replaced by S+(CH3)2. We have now compared the effects of 25 mol% 24-methylenecholesterol and cholesterol on the initial rates of urea permeation into dipalmitoyl-PC (DPPC) and dipalmitoyl-PSC (DPPSC) liposomes above the gel-to-liquid-crystalline phase transition temperature and found a greater reduction with 24-methylenecholesterol/DPPSC than with cholesterol/DPPSC liposomes but little difference between the two sterols in DPPC liposomes. Fluorescence polarization studies, using diphenylhexatriene as a probe, show that polarization (P) values are considerably higher in DMPSC liposomes containing 20 and 30 mol% 24-methylenecholesterol than in DMPC liposomes containing 20 and 30 mol% cholesterol. Higher P values were also obtained in DMPSC liposomes containing other 24-alkyl-substituted sterols (beta-sitosterol, ergosterol and campesterol) than in DMPC liposomes containing the same sterols. Reduced permeability rates in PSC liposomes containing 24-alkyl-substituted sterols are correlated with higher polarization values, reflecting an increased degree of order and/or motion in these liposomes compared with liposomes from the corresponding PC. These results suggest that alkyl substitution at C-24 of the sterol molecule results in tighter interactions with the sulfonium analog of PC than with PC. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Eighteen taxa of diatoms from the Ikpoba reservoir, southern Nigeria are listed in this report. They belong to the genera Cymbella, Stenopterobia, Eunotia, Brachysira, Frustulia, Navicula, Pinnularia, Stauroneis and Surirella. The occurrences and distribution of the algae are indicated. Two of these taxa occurred very frequently, six frequently and four occasionally. Five taxa had rare occurrences while one was very rare. Population densities and total phosphorus concentrations in samples from different lakes of south-eastern Norway were determined. In addition some transplant experiments with dilute phytoplankton populations were carried out. A laboratory batch culture method was used.The diatoms studied may be divided into three ecological groups based on their cell densities and total phosphorus concentrations in the samples. This classification was supported by the experimental results.Cyclotella spp., Asterionella formosa and Tabellaria fenestrata did not grow or had low growth rates above pH 9. Synedra cf. acus and Fragilaria crontonensis had often high growth rates within the pH 9–10 range, but were not able to grow at pH values above 10. High pH-values had no effect on the growth rate of Oscillatoria.Oscillatoria, Synedra and Stephanodiscus were severely growth-limited in filtered water from oligotrophic lakes. Maximum growth rates of all the populations studied were often obtained after addition of phosphate and chelated iron (FeEDTA) in combination to filtered water samples from oligotrophic/mesotrophic lakes. 相似文献

Thioether methyltransferase was previously shown to catalyze the S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methylation of dimethyl selenide, dimethyl telluride, and various thioethers to produce the corresponding methyl onium ions. In this paper we show that the following thioethers are also substrates for this enzyme in vitro: 2-hydroxyethyl ethyl sulfide, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, thiodiglycol, t-butyl sulfide, and isopropyl sulfide. To demonstrate thioether methylation in vivo, mice were injected with [methyl-3H]methionine plus different thioethers, and extracts of lungs, livers, kidneys, and urine were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography for the presence of [3H]methyl sulfonium ions. The following thioethers were tested, and all were found to be methylated in vivo: dimethyl sulfide, diethyl sulfide, methyl n-propyl sulfide, tetrahydrothiophene, 2-(methylthio)ethylamine, 2-hydroxyethyl ethyl sulfide, and 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide. This supports our hypothesis that the physiological role of thioether methyltransferase is to methylate seleno-, telluro-, and thioethers to more water-soluble onium ions suitable for urinary excretion. Conversion of the mustard gas analog, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, to the methyl sulfonium derivative represents a newly discovered mechanism for biochemical detoxification of sulfur mustards, as this conversion blocks formation of the reactive episulfonium ion that is the ultimate alkylating agent for this class of compounds. 相似文献

The seasonal colonization and vertical zonation of adpressed and upright algae on Phragmites stems in Lake Belau, Germany, was investigated from November 1988 to October 1991. During the autumns and winters from 1988 to 1990 the dominant adpressed species included the diatoms Epithemia adnata, E. sorex, E. turgida and Rhopalodia gibba, while during the same seasons in 1990 and 1991, Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta was abundant. The upright diatoms were most abundant on the middle sections of the stems, whereas those epiphytes with most of their cell surfaces directly in contact with the substratum constituted the greatest part of the biomass on the lowest sections of the stems. Epithemia spp. and R. gibba attained their highest abundances near the sediment as well as buried beneath the most dense periphyton aggregations, while there were dense populations of C. placentula var. euglypta on the entire surface of the stems. Cocconeis is able to tolerate higher light intensities, with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) values averaging 38?μmol?m?2?s?1, than Epithemia and Rhopalodia, which settle at a significantly lower PAR (26 and 20?μmol?m?2?s?1, respectively). The change in dominance among the adpressed species from Epithemia and Rhopalodia to Cocconeis can be explained by changes in the grazing habits of the snail Acroloxus lacustris. 相似文献

The distribution of sterols in 14 Chilean Rhodophyceae and in Lessonia sp. (Phaeophyceae) has been examined. Cholesterol is present in all the red algae examined. Golidium filicinum contains, in addition desmosterol and 24-methylene-cholesterol. Cholest-7-en-3-β-ol was found in Cryptonemia angustate and Neoagardhiella gaudichaudii.
