Arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization was measured in the most abundant plant species of the Paraguaná Peninsula, northwestern Venezuela. These plant species included: Acacia tortuosa, Argusia gnaphalodes, Croton punctatus, Croton rhamnifolius, Egletes prostrata, Melochia tomentosa, Panicum vaginatum, Scaevola plumieri, Sporobolus virginicus, Suriana maritima, Leptothrium rigidum, and Fimbristylis cymosa. Mycorrhizal colonization was assessed using the Trouvelot et al. (1986) method that allows for simultaneous evaluation of frequency of colonization (%F), intensity of colonization (%M), and the proportion of arbuscules (%A) and vesicles (%V) present in the roots. Average frequency of colonization was 69%. The highest frequency of colonization was around 92% in C. rhamnifolius and A. tortuosa; in the other species, it varied from 49 to 86%. L. rigidum and F. cymosa were considered nonmycorrhizal because its colonization was very scarce and at all times appeared without arbuscules. Average intensity of colonization was 7%. The highest intensity of colonization was 18% in C. rhamnifolius. In the other species, it varied from 3 to 15%. Paspalum vaginatum, A. gnaphalodes, M. tomentosa, and S. maritima had their fungal structures tightly packed in modified little ovoid roots. In general, frequency of AM colonization was high and similar to those reported for other tropical ecosystems, whereas the intensity of AM colonization was low and similar to values obtained in analogous studies in disturbed ecosystems.  相似文献

The feeding habits of the sand tiger shark Carcharias taurus , one of the most threatened sharks of the world, are poorly known. Sand tiger sharks are critically endangered in the South-west Atlantic. Since 2007, the law requires that all individuals caught in recreational fisheries off Argentina must be released. Using data from a north Patagonian recreational fishery ( n =164 stomachs with contents), we analyzed the diet of sand tiger sharks in relation with size, sex, maturity stage and season; assessed prey consumption patterns and hooking location; and estimated diet overlap with fishery landings. Sand tiger sharks consumed mainly teleosts (55.4% of the total prey number, N ) and elasmobranchs (41.84% N ), and ate more benthic elasmobranchs (batoids and angel sharks) as they become larger. Sharks swallowed prey mostly in one piece (93.7%) and were hooked mainly in internal organs (87.4%, n =175), causing occlusion and perforation of the esophagus and stomach, and lacerations to the pericardium, heart and liver. Sand tiger sharks fed on the most heavily landed species, overlapping almost completely (>90%) with fishery landings. Conservation plans should take into account that releasing hooked sharks could be insufficient to minimize fishing mortality and that competition for food with fisheries is likely to occur.  相似文献

The distribution of three gerbil species in the Negev Desert, Israel differs in relation to sandy habitats. Gerbillus gerbillus occurs in sand only, Gerbillus dasyurus lives in all habitat types except sand, Gerbillus henleyi occurs in sand at high density periods only. We hypothesized that the reason for this distribution pattern is differential ability of species to forage in sand. We tested the ability of gerbils to search for seeds in sand layers of different depths and predicted that a) G. gerbillus will have equal search success at different sand depths, b) G. henleyi (which is twice smaller than G. gerbillus and G. dasyurus) will find seeds in thin layers better than in deep layers, and c) G. dasyurus will successfully find seeds in the thinnest layers only. We predicted also d) that G. gerbillus relies on olfaction for seed location, so its foraging success will be higher in searching for whole seeds than for seed kernels, whereas this will not be the case for G. henleyi and G. dasyurus. We examined the responses of the three species to odor of whole seeds vs seed kernels in Y-maze. In regards to seed depth, the search success of G. gerbillus was significantly higher when the whole seeds rather than kernels were offered in all treatments except the control, but sand depth did not influence the search success. The search success of G. dasyurus and G. henleyi did not depend on the type of seeds offered. The search success of G. dasyurus was lower in experimental (1, 3, 5 and 8 cm sand depth) than in control (1 mm sand depth) treatments, but did not differ among most experimental treatments. The search success of the smallest G. henleyi depended on sand depth for both whole seeds and kernels. Gerbillus gerbillus and G. dasyurus did not lose body masses in any treatment, whereas body mass changes of G. henleyi were influenced by the depth of sand in which gerbils foraged. No species demonstrated differences in response to whole seeds vs kernels in Y-maze tests.  相似文献

Sand packed to a constant dry bulk density, is frequently used as an artificial growth medium in which to simulate the effects of a constant mechanical impedance on root growth. This research aimed to determine whether conventional packing resulted in constant mechanical impedance and to test alternative packing regimes. Perspex cylinders 300 mm tall with a 49 mm internal diameter were packed with moist sand to uniform and varying bulk densities to examine which type of packing gave the greatest uniformity of penetration resistance (PR) with depth. The cylinders packed to a constant bulk density (1.48, 1.55, and 1.6 Mg m-3) all had measured PR profiles which increased markedly with depth by approximately 1, 1.5 and 3 MPa, respectively, within the top 100 mm. Between 100–300 mm depth, these same cylinders showed reductions in PR of up to 1, 2 and 2 MPa respectively. These results show that sand packed to a constant bulk density with depth would not provide a uniform mechanical impedance to plant roots.By packing sand to different bulk densities at different depths, we obtained packed cylinders that had much more uniform PR profiles (with average values of 0.25, 1.40 and 2.30 MPa). Below a depth of 50 mm, the coefficients of variation for replicate cylinders packed in this way were 12%, 5% and 18% for the 0.25, 1.40, and 2.30 MPa treatments respectively. For experiments with single plants, the lower PR values that were unavoidable near to the surface (< 50 mm) can be avoided by sowing seeds at the base of a funnel inserted into the cylinder. Treatments such as these can provide reproducible growth media, with adequate water/nutrient and aeration status for the study of plant response to uniform mechanical impedance.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess whether positioning of the operant cost would affect blue foxes’ (Vulpes lagopus) behaviour and time budget between a mesh floor and sand floor. We built fourteen test apparatuses, six consisting of two fox cages with a mesh floor in both cages and eight with a mesh floor in one cage and a sand floor in the other cage. A cost could be imposed to pass through one-way doors between the cages. The effect of changing the cost to move from the mesh floor to the sand floor or from the sand floor to the mesh floor or between the two mesh floors was examined in 28 juvenile male blue foxes. The foxes’ time allocation between the cages was recorded for four different costs. The foxes’ behaviour was analysed in more detail at the lowest and highest costs. The visit duration increased considerably when leaving the cage became costly, but did not markedly change when entering was costly. The foxes spent less time on the sand floor than on the mesh floor. The foxes preferred to rest on the mesh floor, but rested also on the sand floor when there was a cost associated with leaving the sand floor. The sand floor stimulated digging, rooting and play. In conclusion, both positioning of the cost and the floor material affected blue foxes’ time budget between the two cages.  相似文献

Background

Different epidemiological studies previously indicated that canine leishmaniasis is present in the region of Thiès (Senegal). However, the risks to human health, the transmission cycle and particularly the implicated vectors are unknown.

Methodology/Principal Findings

To improve our knowledge on the population of phlebotomine sand flies and the potential vectors of canine leishmaniasis, sand flies were collected using sticky traps, light traps and indoor spraying method using pyrethroid insecticides in 16 villages of the rural community of Mont Rolland (Thiès region) between March and July 2005. The 3788 phlebotomine sand flies we collected (2044 males, 1744 females) were distributed among 9 species of which 2 belonged to the genus Phlebotomus: P. duboscqi (vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Senegal) and P. rodhaini. The other species belonged to the genus Sergentomyia: S. adleri, S. clydei, S. antennata, S. buxtoni, S. dubia, S. schwetzi and S. magna. The number of individuals and the species composition differed according to the type of trap, suggesting variable, species-related degrees of endophily or exophily. The two species of the genus Phlebotomus were markedly under-represented in comparison to the species of the genus Sergentomyia. This study also shows a heterogeneous spatial distribution within the rural community that could be explained by the different ecosystems and particularly the soil characteristics of this community. Finally, the presence of the S. dubia species appeared to be significantly associated with canine leishmaniasis seroprevalence in dogs.

Conclusions/Significance

Our data allow us to hypothesize that the species of the genus Sergentomyia and particularly the species S. dubia and S. schwetzi might be capable of transmitting canine leishmaniasis. These results challenge the dogma that leishmaniasis is exclusively transmitted by species of the genus Phlebotomus in the Old World. This hypothesis should be more thoroughly evaluated.  相似文献

New Rural Reconstruction is an ongoing alternative development movement in China, with ties to transnational movements for “social economy,” “fair trade,” and “food sovereignty.” It consists of a diverse network of organizations and projects loosely united by the goals of reversing the rural-to-urban flow of resources and (re)constructing sustainable, self-sufficient communities based on cooperation among peasant households, supported by agroecological skill-sharing and alternative marketing. This article examines four peasant organizations in this movement, focusing on their efforts to negotiate the contradictions between their ideals and their relation to capitalism. I argue that, under present conditions, “success” at reversing the flow of resources through commercial means tends to require further integration into capitalist processes, both increasing vulnerability to global economic forces and undermining “alternative” ideals such as equality, sustainability, and participatory democracy. I thus engage critically with the interdisciplinary literature on “social economy” and cooperatives, considering how cooperative experiments might move beyond the limits of alternativism to play a role in the transformation of their socioeconomic context.  相似文献

Microbial souring (H2S production) in porous medium was investigated in an anaerobic upflow porous medium reactor at 60°C using produced waters obtained from the North Sea Ninian oilfield as the inoculum. Multiple carbon sources commonly found in oil field waters (formate, acetate, propionate, iso‐ and n‐butyrates) with inorganic sulfate as the electron acceptor were used as the substrates. Stoichiometry and the rate of souring in the reactor column were calculated. A large proportion of H2S was trapped in the column as FeS and possibly as a gas phase. Concentration gradients for the substrates (organic acids and sulfate) and H2S were generated along the column. At steady state, the highest volumetric substrate consumption and H2S production were found at the front part (inlet) of the reactor column. The average volumetric sulfate reduction rate after H2S production had stabilized was calculated to be 203 ± 51 mg sulfate‐S.l‐1.d‐1. Comparison of the results with the authors’ previous work on the Alaska Kuparuk oilfield waters indicates that the two different microbial inocula (produced waters) exhibited the same experimental trends (rates and location) for souring in the experimental reactor system. This indicates that abiotic factors, as well as microbial parameters, may play an important role for microbial souring in the system.  相似文献

Aims

By analysing cattle- and sheep-grazed sand grasslands, we tested the following hypotheses: (i) livestock type has a stronger effect on the vegetation characteristics than grazing intensity; (ii) sheep grazing results in lower biomass and species and functional diversity than cattle grazing, regardless of intensity; and (iii) increased grazing intensity causes a shift of the trait composition in grasslands.

Location

Sand grasslands in the Nyírség region, East Hungary.

Methods

We selected 26 sand grassland sites grazed by cattle or sheep and classified them into four intensity levels. Vegetation composition was surveyed in 2 m × 2 m plots. We harvested the above-ground biomass from 20 cm × 20 cm plots; then dried and sorted it to live biomass, litter, moss, and lichen. We compared Rao dissimilarity index, species richness, Shannon diversity, evenness, and the community-weighted means of nine vegetative and generative traits along a grazing intensity gradient. We calculated functional richness, evenness, and divergence for comparison.

Results

We found that some diversity metrics and community-weighted means of most studied traits were significantly affected by grazing intensity. Several characteristics were also affected by the interaction of grazing intensity and livestock type, but none of the studied characteristics was affected by livestock type in itself. Increasing Rao dissimilarity index peaking at the fourth grazing intensity level was detected, but for other multitrait indices, no such changes were proven, except for functional divergence, which was the lowest at the first intensity level. Graminoid, forb, and litter biomass were significantly affected by intensity, but none of the biomass fractions was affected by livestock type.

Conclusions

We suggest that for the management of sand grasslands, grazing intensity should be carefully adjusted, considering not only livestock units per hectare. For practical recommendations, well-defined, long-term experiments studying different livestock and habitat types along an intensity gradient would be essential.  相似文献

A molecular study was carried out to incriminate sand fly vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in rural areas of Sarakhs district, Khorassane-Razavi Province, northeastern Iran, in 2011. Sand flies of Sergentomyia with three species and Phlebotomus with six species respectively comprised 73.3% and 26.7% of the specimens. Phlebotomus papatasi was the most common Phlebotomine species in outdoor and indoor resting places. Leishmania infection was found at least in 17 (22%) specimens including Ph. papatasi (n = 9 pool samples), Phlebotomus caucasicus (n = 6), Phlebotomus alexandri (n = 1), and Sergentomyia sintoni (n = 1). The parasites were found comprised Leishmania major (n = 5), Leishmania turanica (n = 10), and Leishmania gerbilli (n = 4). Infection of Ph. papatasi with both L. major and L. turanica supporting the new suggestion indicating that it is not restricted only with L. major. Circulation of L. major by Ph. alexandri, and both L. gerbilli and L. turanica by Ph. caucasicus, in addition to previous data indicating the ability of Ph. alexandri to circulate Leishmania infantum and Leishmania donovani, and Ph. caucasicus to circulate L. major, suggests that these two species can be permissive vectors. The results suggest that Ph. papatasi and Ph. alexandri are the primary and secondary vectors of CL where circulating L. major between human and reservoirs, whereas Ph. caucasicus is circulating L. turanica and L. gerbilli between the rodents in the region.  相似文献

Responsiveness of the liver to estradiol-17β was examined immunologically by measuring the amount of female-specific serum proteins (FSSP) in the serum of the sand lamprey,Lampetra reissneri, injected with estrogen. FSSP synthesis was clearly induced in adult males and young adult lampreys of both sexes by two injections of estradiol-17β, at 200 μg/animal 3 days apart, while the same treatment was quite ineffective in ammocoetes larvae. Induction of FSSP synthesis was successful in some ammocoetes when estradiol-17β injections (200 μg/animal) were done once a week for three weeks. Discussions were made on the development of responsiveness of the liver to estrogen during ontogenesis of the sand lamprey.  相似文献

Summary Upper Jurassic (Malm δ to ζ1) massive limestones (‘algal-sponge-reefs, sponge-reefs, reef-complexes, reefs, algal-sponge-bioherms, biolithites, Massenkalk, bioherms, Stillwasser-Mudmounds’) were analyzed in the Southern Swabian Alb, the Southern Franconian Alb and in drilling wells in the Molasse basin (Southern Bavaria). This analysis was carried out within the frame of a multidisciplinary DFG-study with the objective of decifering the controls on the development of Upper Jurassic spongiolites, their three-dimensional distribution, their characteristic faunal composition, and the diagenetic trends of the different primary facies. The data base consists of detailed facies mapping in the areas of the Eybtal and the Blautal (1300 samples) as well as comparative studies in the Upper Donautal (Swabian Alb) and the Southern Franconian Alb (400 samples). All together about 500 thin sections were studied. The distribution of the most important components (ooids, intraclasts, peloids, corals, sponges, sponge spicules, cyanobacterial crusts, brachiopods, molluscs, echinoids, bryozoans, serpulids,Terebella, Tubiphytes), and diagenetic features (dolomite, dedolomite, silicification, stylolites, clay flasers, hematite patches) results in a spatial distribution pattern of facies types. The largest part (70 %) of the massive limestones consists of a peloid-lithoclast-ooid sand facies rich in completely or partly micritized ooids. These ooids, especially in beds of the Malm δ to ε, might be the clue to a reinterpretation of the water depth. True biogenic constructions occur (about 30 % of the volume; sponge-algalmudmounds, algal-sponge-boundstones, and brachiopod-algal-sponge-mounds) within and at the margins of this facies and are interpreted as platform sands. The spatial distribution of the buildups in relation to the sand facies was probably controlled by hydrodynamic conditions. In addition, zoned sponge-algal-mounds occur in intraplatform channels and nodular sponge-algal-mudmounds in the marly basin sediments between platform sand areas. Breccias and slumpings in beds older than the Malm ζ have to be reinterpreted. Most of the breccias found originated from the flanks of the sand platforms, reflecting the faunal composition of the algal-sponge-boundstones which stabilized the flanks. Breccias of this composition occur throughout the Malm δ-ζ1 and differ markedly in their composition from the sand facies. The boundary breccia (Malm ε/ζ1) is interpreted as marking a regressive maximum. The increasing growth of buildups, rich in brachiopods in the Malm ζ1, is ascribed to an increase of reef growth at the beginning of a transgression. Detailed facies analyses necessary for the reconstruction of the spatial distribution of different facies types are in progress. Most of the older data on faunal distributions cannot be used for detailed facies analysis because they differentiated only between massive facies and bedded facies. Therefore Upper Jurassic limestones of Southern Germany should be restudied in order to recognize the volumetric importance of sand facies and buildups within massive limestones.  相似文献

Populations rarely show immediate genetic responses to habitat fragmentation, even in taxa that possess suites of traits known to increase their vulnerability to extinction. Thus conservation geneticists must consider the time scale over which contemporary evolutionary processes operate to accurately portray the effects of habitat isolation. Here, we examine the genetic impacts of fragmentation on the Florida sand skink Plestiodon reynoldsi, a sand swimming lizard that is highly adapted to the upland scrub habitat of central Florida. We studied fragments located on the southern Lake Wales Ridge, where human activity in the latter half of the 20th century has modified the natural patchiness of the landscape. Based on a relaxed molecular clock method, we estimate that sand skinks have persisted in this region for approximately 1.5 million years and that the time frame of human disturbance is equivalent to fewer than 30 skink generations. Using genotypes from eight microsatellite loci, we screened for molecular signatures of this disturbance by assessing congruence between population structure, as inferred from spatially-informed Bayesian assignment tests, and the current geography of scrub fragments. We also tested for potential intrapopulation genetic effects of inbreeding in isolated populations by comparing the average pairwise relatedness of individuals within fragments of different areas and isolation. Our results indicate that although some patches show a higher degree of relatedness than expected under random mating, the genetic effects of recent isolation are not evident in this part of the species’ range. We argue that this result is an artefact of a time-lag in the response to disturbance, and that species-typical demographic features may explain the genetic inertia observed in these populations.  相似文献

This study examined factors affecting juvenile recruitment in the tuatua Paphies donacinaon an exposed surf beach in Pegasus Bay, South Island New Zealand between October 1994 and April 1997. Tuatua recruitment followed female gonad maturation with a delay of approximately 2 months. Juveniles (1–10 mm shell length) occurred throughout the study except during June and July 1995 (winter). Average densities (m–2 ) were 28 in winter, 230 in spring, 174 in summer and 108 in autumn. There was high juvenile mortality and/or emigration and the maximum average density of (741m–2 ) was recorded in November 1996. Recruit densities were similar between years except during winter. Adult tuatua populations were dominated by modal shell lengths greater than 70 mm.There was no significant relationship between adult and juvenile recruit length. Recruit length decreased with recruit density suggesting density dependent competition for space or food resources. Juvenile density increased following increases in food availability (chlorophyll a concentration) but average length of juveniles did not correlate directly with any of the environmental variables. Recruit density decreased as the modal adult length increased and recruit length reduced when adult populations had a high condition index. Because larvae, juveniles and adult are mobile the beach population is characteristic of an open system with adults and juveniles from the resident population affecting post-settlement density- dependent processes.  相似文献

There has long been controversy on which environmental factor is the predominant determinant of community zonation on sand dunes. It is demonstrated here that, on a dune system in southern New Zealand, several environmental factors that could limit growth all vary along the sea-to-inland sand dune zonation: soil moisture, soil nutrients, wind exposure, sand burial, salt spray and soil salinity. Correlation of the responses of 30 species to experimental stress (burial, darkness, rooting-medium salinity and salt spray) with the zonation of the species in the field indicates that, in the four dune systems studied, sand burial and salt are both important, with salt generally being the more important. However, the relative importance of the factors differs between sites.  相似文献

The cryptic habits of subterranean termites restricts detailed analysis of their foraging patterns in situ, but the process is evidently dominated by tunnel constructions connecting the nest with woody resources discovered within the territory of each colony. In this study, tunnel formation and orientation were studied experimentally in the termite Reticulitermes grassei (Clement), using 2-dimensional laboratory foraging arenas con- taining fine sand as the substratum. The building of exploratory tunnels over a 10-day period and the geometry of the resulting network are described. Fractal analysis showed that tunnel geometry had a fractal dimension, regardless of the total length tunnelled whether foragers encountered the food source or not. The bulk density of the sand in the arenas affected the distances tunnelled, with higher density reducing construction, but did not affect tunnel geometry. Tunnels were not discernibly orientated with respect to the positioning of the food source, even in a situation where termites had failed to find the food source at a distance of less than 50 mm, suggesting that volatiles from wood are not attractants.  相似文献

Bacterial diversity in the rhizosphere of beach morning glory (Calystegia soldanella) and wild rye (Elymus mollis), two of the major plant species inhabiting the coastal sane dune in Tae-An, Korea, was studied by the analysis of community 16S rRNA gene clones. The amplified rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) of the clones using HaeIII exhibited significant differences in the community composition between the two plant species as well as regional differences, but also identified a specific ARDRA pattern that was most common among the clones regardless of plant species. Subsequent sequence analysis indicated that the pattern was that of Lysobacter spp., which is a member of the family Xanthomonadaceae, class Gamma proteobacteria. The Lysobacter clones comprised 50.6% of the clones derived from C. soldanella and 62.5% of those from E. mollis. Other minor patterns included those of Pseudomonas spp., species of Rhizobium, Chryseobacterium spp. and Pantoea spp. among C. soldanella clones, and Pseudomonas sp. and Aeromonas hydrophila among E. mollis clones. It is not yet clear what kind of roles Lysobacter plays in association with sand dune plants, but its universal presence in the rhizosphere, together with the potential of this taxon for antagonistic activity against plant pathogens, suggests that Lysobacter might form a symbiotic relationship with its host plants.  相似文献

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has been naturally transmitted in periurban areas due to the emergence and reemergence of its vectors in such areas. Aimed to further knowledge on ecological aspects affecting the occurrence of phlebotomine sand flies in VL transmission areas in the municipality of Várzea Grande, state of Mato Grosso (MT), Brazil, sand fly captures were carried out. Monthly collections of sand flies were undertaken with CDC light-traps, which were left in both intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary areas of ten residences during four consecutive days between January 2004 and June 2006. Twenty-two species of genus Lutzomyia and one of Brumptomyia were captured. The most abundant species was Lutzomyia longipalpis (65.23%), followed by L. evandroi (16.26%), L. lenti (7.69%), L. whitmani (4.92%), L. sallesi (2.34%) and L. termitophila (1.32%). The highest density of the main VL vector, L. longipalpis, was found in peridomiciliary areas, mostly males. No significant correlation was found between environment (temperature, air relative humidity and rain fall) and phlebotomine density; although a slight increase in sand fly density has been observed in the period following rainfalls, particularly L. longipalpis. No correlation was observed between distribution and density of L. longipalpis, prevalence of human VL cases and the presence of serologically positive dogs. The presence of infected dogs, increased vector density, susceptibility rate and interruption of epidemiological surveillance may raise the risk of VL transmission to man in Várzea Grande.  相似文献
