The original definition of aerobic dive limit (ADL) was the dive duration after which there is an increase in post-dive concentration of lactate in the blood of Weddell seals freely diving in the field. The only other species in which such measurements have been made is the emperor penguin. For all other species, aerobic dive limit has been calculated (cADL) by dividing usable oxygen stores with an estimation of the rate of oxygen consumption during diving. Unfortunately, cADL is often referred to as the aerobic dive limit, implying that it is equivalent to that determined from the measurement of post-dive blood lactate concentration. However, this is not so, as at cADL all of the usable oxygen would have been consumed, whereas Weddell seals and emperor penguins can dive for at least 2-3 times longer than their ADL. Thus, at ADL, there is still some usable oxygen remaining in the stores. It is suggested that to avoid continued confusion between these two terms, the former is called diving lactate threshold (DLT), as it is somewhat analogous to the lactate threshold in exercising terrestrial vertebrates. Possible explanations of how some species routinely dive beyond their cADL are also discussed.  相似文献

Following several decades of research, there is not yet a convincing vaccine against shigellosis. It is still difficult, in spite of the breadth of strategies (i.e. live attenuated oral, killed oral, subunit parenteral) to select an optimal option. Two approaches are clearly emerging: (i) live attenuated deletion mutants based on rational selection of genes that are key in the pathogenic process, and (ii) conjugated detoxified polysaccharide parenteral vaccines, or more recently conjugated synthetic carbohydrates. Some of these approaches have already undergone phase I and II clinical trials with promising results, but important issues have also emerged, particularly the discrepancy between colonization and immunogenic potential of live attenuated vaccine candidates depending upon the population concerned (i.e. non endemic vs. endemic areas). Efforts are needed to definitely establish the proof of concept of these approaches, and thus the need for clinical trials which should also soon explore the possibility to associate different serotypes, in response to serotype specific protection against shigellosis. More basic research is also required to improve what we can still consider as first-generation vaccines, and to explore possible new paradigms including the search for cross-protective antigens.  相似文献

Too often cases of industrial injuries are submitted for permanent disability rating before maximum recovery is attained and the condition is permanent and stationary. This is frequently a situation that is detrimental to the injured working man, since his physical disability might be further reduced by additional treatment, and his future earning power and economic status thus be improved. Also it may be detrimental to the insurance carrier and/or employer, since in some instances it results in increased permanent disability award payments for portions of the condition which are not truly permanent. Inadequate medical reports also are a frequent cause of unfair awards. The necessary factors used to arrive at proper conclusions, the errors that have been observed and the importance of this problem are discussed.  相似文献

A case of pigmented axillary nodes in the presence of malignant melanoma of the upper extremity points out the caution necessary in making intraoperative decisions based on gross appearance at the time of surgery. Had our preoperative plans been abandoned in consideration of the "obvious pathology," the patient might not have done as well. Histologic confirmation should always precede any altering of preoperative plans despite gross findings.  相似文献

Prior work has shown that the degree of basicranial flexion among primates is determined by relative brain size, with anatomically modern humans possibly having a less flexed basicranium than expected for their relative brain size. Basicranial flexion has also been suggested to be adaptive in that it maintains a spheroid brain shape, thereby minimizing connections between different parts of the brain. In addition, it has been argued that the degree of flexion might be constrained such that increases in relative brain size beyond that seen in Australopithecus africanus were accommodated by mechanisms other than basicranial flexion. These hypotheses were evaluated by collating an extensive data set on basicranial flexion and relative brain size in primates and other mammals. The data were analyzed using standard least squares regression, geometric and curvilinear modeling, and phylogenetically independent contrasts (PICs). Geometric modeling does not support the hypothesis that flexion is an adaptation that facilitates enlargement of a spheroid brain. Whether humans have a less flexed basicranium than expected for their relative brain size depends on the phylogenetic vantage point from which it is evaluated. They are as flexed as expected for a descendant of the last common ancestor of the Paranthropus-Homo clade, but their degree of flexion cannot be predicted from the basal hominoid node, even if their relative brain size is specified. Humans undoubtedly occupy an unusual part of morphospace in terms of basicranial flexion and relative brain size, but this does not mean that their degree of flexion is or is not constrained. Curvilinear regression models and standard linear regression models describe the relationship between flexion and relative brain size equally well. Hypotheses that the degree of flexion is or is not constrained cannot be discriminated at present. Consideration of recently published ontogenetic data in the context of the interspecific data for adults suggests that much of the variance in basicranial flexion can still be explained as a mechanical consequence of brain enlargement relative to basicranial length.  相似文献

Biochemistry and structural biology are undergoing a dramatic revolution. Until now, we have tried to study subtle and complex biological processes by crude in vitro techniques, looking at average behaviors of vast numbers of molecules under conditions usually remote from those existing in the cell. Researchers have realized the limitations of this approach, but none other has been available. Now, we can not only observe the nuances of the behaviors of individual molecules but prod and probe them as well. Perhaps most important is the emerging ability to carry out such observations and manipulations within the living cell. The long-awaited leap to an in vivo biochemistry is at last underway.  相似文献

Rapid developments in free radical biology and molecular technology have permitted exploration of the free radical theory of aging. Oxidative stress has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of diseases. Studies have found evidence of oxidative damage to macromolecules (DNA, lipids, protein), and data in transgenic Drosophila melanogaster support the hypothesis that oxidative injury might directly cause the aging process. Additional links between oxidative stress and aging focus on mitochondria, leading to development of the mitochondrial theory of aging. However, despite the number of studies describing the association of markers of oxidative damage with advancing age, few, if any definitively link oxidative injury to altered energy production or cellular function. Although a causal role for oxidative stress in the aging process has not been clearly established, this does not preclude attempts to reduce oxidative injury as a means to reduce morbidity and perhaps increase the healthy, useful life span of an individual. This review highlights studies demonstrating enhanced oxidative stress with advancing age and stresses the importance of the balance between oxidants as mediators of disease and important components of signal transduction pathways.  相似文献
