We hypothesize that rapid eye movement or REM sleep evolved, in part, to mediate sexual/reproductive behaviors and strategies. Because development of sexual and mating strategies depends crucially on early attachment experiences, we further hypothesize that REM functions to mediate attachment processes early in life. Evidence for these hypotheses comes from (1) the correlation of REM variables with both attachment and sexual/reproductive variables; (2) attachment-related and sex-related hormonal release during REM; (3) selective activation during REM of brain sites implicated in attachment and sexual processes; (4) effects of maternal deprivation on REM; (5) effects of REM deprivation on sexual behaviors; and (6) the REM-associated sexual excitation. To explain why we find associations among REM sleep, attachment, and adult reproductive strategies, we rely on recent extensions of parent-offspring conflict theory. Using data from recent findings on genomic imprinting, Haig (2000) and others suggest that paternally expressed genes are selected to promote growth of the developing fetus/child at the expense of the mother, while maternally expressed genes counter these effects. Because developmental REM facilitates attachment-related outcomes in the child, developmental REM may be regulated by paternally expressed genes. In that case, REM may have evolved to support the “aims” of paternal genes at the expense of maternal genes. The proton nmr spectra of the synthetic valency hybrids, α2+CN)2, (α+CN)2β2 of hemoglobin A and the natural valency hybrids of the mutant hemoglobins Boston, Iwate and Milwaukee have led to the unambiguous assignment of the two proximal histidyl imidazole exchangeable proton signals at 64 and 76 ppm to individual α and β subunits, respectively. New single non-exchangeable proton resonances detected in the extreme downfield region of the spectra of Hbs Boston and Iwate are tentatively assigned to the coordinated tyrosine of the mutated α chains.  相似文献

The ethylisocyanide equilibria of all the five known hemoglobins M, namely Hb M Iwate (alpha287 Tyrbeta2), Hb M Boston (alpha258 Tyrbeta2), Hb M Hyde Park (alpha2beta292 Tyr), Hb M Saskatoon (alpha2beta263 tyr), and Hb M Milwaukee-I (alpha2beta267 Glu), were studied both in the half-ferric and fully reduced heme states. In the half-ferric state, no heme-heme interaction was observed for Hb M Iwate, Hb M Boston, and Hb M Hyde Park, but Hb M Saskatoon and Hb M Milwaukee-I show small but definite heme-heme interaction with Hill's n of 1.3. The beta chain mutants, Hb M Hyde Park and Hb M Saskatoon, have almost normal affinity for ethylisocyanide and a normal Bohr effect, whereas the alpha chain mutants, Hb M Iwate and Hb M Boston, have abnormally low affinity and almost no Bohr effect. Hb M Milwaukee-I showed a large Bohr effect and low affinity. These results are consistent qualitatively with those on oxygen equilibria reported previously. In the fully reduced state, in which all four hemes were in the ferrous state and capable of binding ethylisocyanide distinct differences were found in the extent of heme-heme interaction. Namely, the n values for proximal histidine mutants, Hb M Iwate and Hb M Hyde Park, were 1.1 and 1.0, respectively, whereas the distal histidine mutants, Hb M Boston and Hb M Saskatoon, showed high n values of 2.4 and 1.6, respectively. Hb M Milwaukee-I also exhibited a high n value of 2.0 The ethylisocyanide affinity of the four histidine mutants was high compared with that of Hb A, while that for Hb M Milwaukee-I was almost normal. All five Hbs M had approximately normal magnitudes of Bohr effect. In the half-ferric state, the proximal and distal histidine mutants of the same chain showed similar affinity for ethylisocyanide and Bohr effect, rather different from those of the mutants of the opposite chain. These differences seem to be derived from the difference of abnormal bonding of ferric iron to tyrosine or glutamic acid. On the other hand, the reduction of iron, which abolished the abnormal bonding and made all of the chains capable of binding ligand, extinguished the differences of alpha and beta chains, and the effect of amino acid side chains close to iron on ligand binding properties became clear. Proximal histidine, which is considered to trigger the transition between the T and R states, seems to be essential to the heme-heme interaction.  相似文献

Message retransmission is a central aspect of information diffusion. In a disaster context, the passing on of official warning messages by members of the public also serves as a behavioral indicator of message salience, suggesting that particular messages are (or are not) perceived by the public to be both noteworthy and valuable enough to share with others. This study provides the first examination of terse message retransmission of official warning messages in response to a domestic terrorist attack, the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013. Using messages posted from public officials’ Twitter accounts that were active during the period of the Boston Marathon bombing and manhunt, we examine the features of messages that are associated with their retransmission. We focus on message content, style, and structure, as well as the networked relationships of message senders to answer the question: what characteristics of a terse message sent under conditions of imminent threat predict its retransmission among members of the public? We employ a negative binomial model to examine how message characteristics affect message retransmission. We find that, rather than any single effect dominating the process, retransmission of official Tweets during the Boston bombing response was jointly influenced by various message content, style, and sender characteristics. These findings suggest the need for more work that investigates impact of multiple factors on the allocation of attention and on message retransmission during hazard events.  相似文献

Hemoglobins M (Hbs M) are human hemoglobin variants in which either the α or β subunit contains a ferric heme in the α2β2 tetramer. Though the ferric subunit cannot bind O2, it regulates O2 affinity of its counterpart ferrous subunit. We have investigated resonance Raman spectra of two Hbs, M Iwate (α87His → tyrosine [Tyr]) and M Boston (α58His → Tyr), having tyrosine as a heme axial ligand at proximal and distal positions, respectively, that exhibit unassigned resonance Raman bands arising from ferric (not ferrous) hemes at 899 and 876 cm-1. Our quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory on Fe-porphyrin models with p-cresol and/or 4-methylimidazole showed that the unassigned bands correspond to the breathing-like modes of Fe3+-bound Tyr and are sensitive to the Fe-O-C(Tyr) angle. Based on the frequencies of the Raman bands, the Fe-O-C(Tyr) angles of Hbs M Iwate and M Boston were predicted to be 153.5° and 129.2°, respectively. Consistent with this prediction, x-ray crystallographic analysis showed that the Fe-O-C(Tyr) angles of Hbs M Iwate and M Boston in the T quaternary structure were 153.6° and 134.6°, respectively. It also showed a similar Fe-O bond length (1.96 and 1.97 Å) and different tilting angles.  相似文献

Antigenic Variation in Group A Streptococci: Types 11 and 9   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
A strain of group A Streptococcus which was virulent but M-nontypable was isolated from patients in a hospital nursery during an epidemic. This strain, Boston 11, reacted in T-agglutination tests with antisera for types 9 and 11, an unusual combination. A comparison of this strain with Lancefield's M-11 strain (NCDC SS-721) and Alabama 11 (Provisional 61) revealed three serologically related but distinct strains. Antiserum produced with the Boston 11 strain exhibited similar reactivity with all three "11" strains as well as with M-9 (SS-501) as demonstrated in precipitin tests. Immunodiffusion studies indicated that the Boston 11 antigen was partially identical with the M-11 and M-9 strains and shared at least one antigen with the Alabama 11 strain. The Boston 11 antiserum could be made specific for precipitin tests, but bactericidal activity for the Alabama 11, M-11, and Boston 11 strains was essentially negative.  相似文献

The reduction of hemoglobins (Hb) M such as Hb M Iwate, Hb M Boston, Hb M Hyde Park, Hb M Saskatoon, and Hb M Milwaukee by the ferredoxin and ferredoxin-NADP reductase system was studied systematically under anaerobic conditions. The enzyme system could not reduce the abnormal chains in methemoglobin M with an alpha chain anomaly but effectively converted the methemoglobin M with a beta chain anomaly to the fully reduced form. During the reduction of the methemoglobin M with a beta chain anomaly, the spectra showed a shift of the initial isosbestic points, indicating the possible formation of intermediate hemoglobins in the partially reduced state. On the reduction mode of the methemoglobin M, however, it was classified into three types. 1) Only normal chains were reduced (Hb M Iwate and Hb M Boston). 2) Sequential reduction from normal to abnormal chains occurred (Hb M Milwaukee and Hb M Hyde Park). 3) Normal chains were preferentially reduced, but the reduction of abnormal chains also started at the same rate when the reduction of normal ones had proceeded halfway (Hb M Saskatoon). These differences are discussed in relation to the redox potential of each abnormal chain in methemoglobin M.  相似文献

Harvard University's Neurological Unit at Boston City Hospital (BCH) became the premier center for neurological training in the United States during the middle part of the 20th century. During part of this period (1939-1967), it was directed by Derek Denny-Brown, who had been recruited from England by Harvard president James Conant. The training program that Denny-Brown initiated at BCH emphasized neurology as a medical specialty, independent of psychiatry and neurosurgery. This program, which reflected Denny-Brown's British training, was remarkably effective and served as a model for rest of the country.  相似文献

Leaf-level responses to increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) concentrations could have large implications for water and carbon cycles. We investigated whether stomatal density, guard cell length, and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) of 27 individual trees growing at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, Massachusetts have responded to changing environmental conditions over the last 100 years. We examined leaves from 74 herbarium specimens collected from three genera-Acer (maples), Quercus (oaks), and Carpinus (hornbeams)-from 1893 to 2006. During this period, global average atmospheric CO(2) concentrations increased by approximately 29% (86 ppm), and temperatures in Boston increased by 1.8°C. Stomatal density and guard cell length were negatively correlated in oaks and hornbeams. Although stomatal density declined and guard cell length increased over time, the changes were not dependent on the magnitude of changes in CO(2) concentrations. Intrinsic WUE did not change significantly over time. Our findings suggest that iWUE may not respond to changes in CO(2) concentrations over the lifetimes of individual trees, possibly because of compensating changes in stomatal density and guard cell size. We provide an example of a method that can enable researchers to differentiate between genetic and plastic responses to global change in long-lived trees.  相似文献

This study compared the roles of root exudates collected from two fern species, the As hyperaccumulating Chinese Brake fern (Pteris vittata L.) and the As-sensitive Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata L.), on As-mobilization of two As minerals (aluminum arsenate and iron arsenate) and a CCA (chromated copper arsenate)-contaminated soil as well as plant As accumulation. Chinese Brake fern exuded 2 times more dissolved organic carbon (DOC) than Boston fern and the difference was more pronounced under As stress. The composition of organic acids in the root exudates for both ferns consisted mainly of phytic acid and oxalic acid. However, Chinese Brake fern produced 0.46 to 1.06 times more phytic acid than Boston fern under As stress, and exuded 3–5 times more oxalic acid than Boston fern in all treatments. Consequently, root exudates from Chinese Brake fern mobilized more As from aluminum arsenate (3–4 times), iron arsenate (4–6 times) and CCA-contaminated soil (6–18 times) than Boston fern. Chinese Brake fern took up more As and translocated more As to the fronds than Boston fern. The molar ratio of P/As in the roots of Chinese Brake fern was greater than in the fronds whereas the reverse was observed in Boston fern. These results suggested that As-mobilization from the soil by the root exudates (enhancing plant uptake), coupled with efficient As translocation to the fronds (keeping a high molar ratio of P/As in the roots), are both important for As hyperaccumulation by Chinese Brake fern.  相似文献

Two new polyaromatic hydrocarbon-degrading marine bacteria have been isolated from burrow wall sediments of benthic macrofauna by using enrichments on phenanthrene. Strain LC8 (from a polychaete) and strain M4-6 (from a mollusc) are aerobic and gram negative and require sodium chloride (>1%) for growth. Both strains can use 2- and 3-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as their sole carbon and energy sources, but they are nutritionally versatile. Physiological and phylogenetic analyses based on 16S ribosomal DNA sequences suggest that strain M4-6 belongs to the genus Cycloclasticus and represents a new species, Cycloclasticus spirillensus sp. nov. Strain LC8 appears to represent a new genus and species, Lutibacterium anuloederans gen. nov., sp. nov., within the Sphingomonadaceae. However, when inoculated into sediment slurries with or without exogenous phenanthrene, only L. anuloederans appeared to sustain a significant phenanthrene uptake potential throughout a 35-day incubation. In addition, only L. anuloederans appeared to enhance phenanthrene degradation in heavily contaminated sediment from Little Mystic Cove, Boston Harbor, Boston, Mass.  相似文献

Heme-heme interaction in Hb M Boston (His alpha 58-->Tyr) was investigated with visible and UV resonance Raman (RR), EPR, and CD spectroscopies. Although Hb M Boston has been believed to be frozen in the T quaternary state, oxygen binding exhibited appreciable co-operativity (n=1.4) and the near-UV CD spectrum indicated weakening of the T marker at pH 9.0. Binding of CO to the normal beta-subunit gave no change in the EPR and visible Raman spectra of the abnormal alpha-subunit at pH 7.5, but it caused an increase of EPR rhombicity and significant changes in the Raman coordination markers as well as the Fe(III)-tyrosine related bands of the alpha-subunit at pH 9.0. The UVRR spectra indicated appreciable changes of Trp but not of Tyr upon CO binding to the alpha-subunit at pH 9.0. Therefore, we conclude that the ligand binding to the beta heme induces quaternary structure change at pH 9.0 and is communicated to the alpha heme, presumably through His beta 92-->Trp beta 37-->His alpha 87.  相似文献
