Abstract:  Microplitis mediator (Haliday) (Hym., Braconidae) is an important parasitoid of early instar larvae of the European cabbage moth, Mamestra brassicae L. (Lep., Noctuidae). In the laboratory, we examined attack responses of female M. mediator to the first three larval instars of M. brassicae . Females were presented with M. brassicae larvae either one individual at a time in a no-choice experiment, or three individuals, one from each instar, simultaneously in a choice experiment. Whether or not there was choice, naïve female parasitoids attacked a high proportion of larvae and did not discriminate among instars. In the no-choice experiment, attacked larvae were reared, and parasitoid cocoons were produced from about 76% of larvae attacked as first and second instars, but from only 19% of larvae attacked as third instars. Dissections of attacked larvae from the choice experiment showed that about 79% of attacks on first and second instars resulted in oviposition compared with only 49% for third instars. When given choice, frequency and number of attacks on first instar larvae increased with increasing parasitoid experience. Our results suggest that first and second instar larvae of M. brassicae are suitable hosts for M. mediator , but that third instar larvae are suboptimal both because oviposition attempts were frequently unsuccessful and because immature parasitoids failed to complete development. Nevertheless, naïve attacking parasitoids exhibited minimal discrimination among instars, although experienced parasitoids most frequently attacked first instar larvae. The host selection behaviour of M. mediator is discussed in the context of optimal foraging theory and implications for biological control.  相似文献

Xanthopimpla stemmator (Thunberg)(Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a solitary endoparasite of pupae of Old World lepidopteran stalkborers, was recently imported into Texas as a candidate for biological control of New World stalkborers. Information on host acceptability, host suitability and cues responsible for host finding were necessary to gain an insight into parasite/host interactions, because of the absence of a coevolutionary history.Xanthopimpla stemmator females were exposed to laboratory-reared one-to six-day-oldDiatraea saccharalis (F.) pupae. An average of 62% of host pupae were accepted and all ages of pupae were equally acceptable. Host suitability decreased with host age. One- to five-day-old host pupae averaged 31–37% suitability, whereas only 19% of 6-day-old pupae were suitable. Successful parasitization, defined as the product of the proportion accepted and the proportion suitable, decreased from 22–23% for 1-, 2- and 3-day-old pupae to 13% for 6-day-old pupae. Sex ratio (female:male) of the parasite progeny increased with host age. Females comprised 47% of total parasite progeny of 1-day-old and 84% of 6-day-old pupae. The increase in percent females was a result of a similar number of females in all age classes, coupled with a decrease in the number of males from older hosts.Xanthopimpla stemmator superparasitized 61% of acceptedD. saccharalis pupae in the laboratory. On dissection, 73% of host pupae with multiple probe wounds were found to contain parasite eggs or larvae; these hosts contained up to 10 eggs or 7 first-instar larvae. Increased numbers of probes by the parasites were associated with an increase in successful parasitization. Host seeking activity inX. stemmator was stimulated by the presence of larval frass, host odor and movement of host pupae. Results suggest thatX. stemmator is a good candidate for biological control ofD. saccharalis and possibly other factitious stalkborer hosts.  相似文献

Sudden oak death is an emerging forest disease caused by the invasive pathogen Phytophthora ramorum. Genetic and environmental factors affecting susceptibility to P. ramorum in the key inoculum-producing host tree Umbellularia californica (bay laurel) were examined across a heterogeneous landscape in California, USA. Laboratory susceptibility trials were conducted on detached leaves and assessed field disease levels for 97 host trees from 12 225-m(2) plots. Genotype and phenotype characteristics were assessed for each tree. Effects of plot-level environmental conditions (understory microclimate, amount of solar radiation and topographic moisture potential) on disease expression were also evaluated. Susceptibility varied significantly among U. californica trees, with a fivefold difference in leaf lesion size. Lesion size was positively related to leaf area, but not to other phenotypic traits or to field disease level. Genetic diversity was structured at three spatial scales, but primarily among individuals within plots. Lesion size was significantly related to amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers, but local environment explained most variation in field disease level. Thus, substantial genetic variation in susceptibility to P. ramorum occurs in its principal foliar host U. californica, but local environment mediates expression of susceptibility in nature.  相似文献

Impaired health caused by alcohol abuse has been known throughout recorded history. Over the past century, alcohol abuse has been clearly linked to host susceptibility to infectious disease, particularly bacterial pneumonia. Recently, both acute and chronic alcohol intake have been shown to result in specific defects in innate and adaptive immunity; these could, in principle, be subjected to specific modulation to overcome the immunosuppressive effects of the most commonly abused substance in the Western world.  相似文献

The intestinal microbiota is a complicated ecosystem that influences many aspects of host physiology (i.e. diet, disease development, drug metabolism, and regulation of the immune system). It also exhibits spatial patterning and temporal dynamics. In this review, the effects of internal and external (environmental) factors on intestinal microbiota are discussed. We describe the roles of the gut microbiota in maintaining intestinal and immune system homeostasis and the relationship between gut microbiota and diseases. In particular, the contributions of polysaccharides, as the most abundant diet components in intestinal microbiota and host health are presented. Finally, perspectives for research avenues relating to gut microbiota are also discussed.  相似文献

采用寄主转换建立生命表及触角电位 (EAG)方法比较了棉蚜两寄主专化型 (棉花型和黄瓜型 )对不同夏季作物的适合度。结果表明 ,棉花型蚜转到黄瓜上及黄瓜型蚜转接到棉花上均不能正常产仔繁殖和建立种群。两种蚜型均不能在茄子和苋菜上建立种群。黄瓜型蚜能在豇豆上建立种群 ,但棉花型蚜不能 ,表现出两种寄主型棉蚜对夏寄主利用上存在显著差异。受棉蚜为害 12~ 36 h后的黄瓜或棉花植株仍不适合于棉花型或黄瓜型蚜 ,表现出黄瓜型蚜不能在被棉花型蚜为害过的棉株上正常存活和繁殖 ,棉花型蚜也不能在被黄瓜型蚜为害过的黄瓜苗上存活和繁殖。两种寄主型蚜对不同寄主叶片丙酮提取物的触角电位表明 ,黄瓜型蚜对棉花、哈密瓜和马铃薯叶片提取物的反应显著强于棉花型蚜 ,而对黄瓜和甜瓜叶片提取物的反应上两种蚜型差异不显著。文中同时对棉花型和黄瓜型棉蚜产生的生态机制进行了讨论。  相似文献

Even for parasitoids with a wide host range, not all host species are equally suitable, and host quality often depends on the plant the host feeds on. We compared oviposition choice and offspring performance of a generalist pupal parasitoid, Pteromalus apum (Retzius) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), on two congeneric hosts reared on two plant species under field and laboratory conditions. The plants contain defensive iridoid glycosides that are sequestered by the hosts. Sequestration at the pupal stage differed little between host species and, although the concentrations of iridoid glycosides in the two plant species differ, there was no effect of diet on the sequestration by host pupae. The rate of successful parasitism differed between host species, depending on the conditions they were presented in. In the field, where plant‐associated cues are present, the parasitoid used Melitaea cinxia (L.) over Melitaea athalia (Rottemburg) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), whereas more M. athalia were parasitised in simplified laboratory conditions. In the field, brood size, which is partially determined by rate of superparasitism, depended on both host and plant species. There was little variation in other aspects of offspring performance related to host or plant species, indicating that the two host plants are of equal quality for the hosts, and the hosts are of equal quality for the parasitoids. Corresponding to this, we found no evidence for associative learning by the parasitoid based on their natal host, so with respect to these host species they are truly generalist in their foraging behaviour.  相似文献

【目的】亚洲柑桔木虱Diaphorina citri Kuwayama的虫口密度及活动与柑桔黄龙病的田间传播、流行有十分密切的关系,寻找合适的室内饲养条件能够便于观察和研究其生物学特性和传病机制。【方法】本文以九里香Murraya exotica(L.)Mant.、酸桔Citrus sunki Hort.ex Tanaka和马水桔Citrus reticulata Blanco.cv.Mashuiju 3种寄主植物不同成熟度离体梢为研究材料,(1)比较亚洲柑桔木虱卵分别在3种寄主植株和离体嫩梢上的孵化率;(2)比较3种寄主不同成熟度离体梢对各龄若虫存活率和蜕皮的影响;(3)比较3种寄主不同成熟度离体梢对成虫存活率的影响。【结果】(1)亚洲柑桔木虱在植株嫩梢上卵的孵化率高于离体嫩梢,九里香表现最明显;(2)低龄若虫在叶片未完全展开的离体嫩梢上存活率最高,而高龄若虫在完全展开的嫩梢上最高;(3)用离体成熟梢饲养柑桔木虱成虫存活率高于离体嫩梢,酸桔和马水桔离体梢饲养的存活率较九里香高。【结论】用寄主植物离体梢饲养的亚洲柑桔木虱卵孵化率和若虫、成虫存活率都较高而且较稳定,该方法可用于这种木虱的室内繁殖中。  相似文献

Aim

Identifying barriers that govern parasite community assembly and parasite invasion risk is critical to understand how shifting host ranges impact disease emergence. We studied regional variation in the phylogenetic compositions of bird species and their blood parasites (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus spp.) to identify barriers that shape parasite community assembly.

Location

Australasia and Oceania.

Methods

We used a data set of parasite infections from >10,000 host individuals sampled across 29 bioregions. Hierarchical models and matrix regressions were used to assess the relative influences of interspecies (host community connectivity and local phylogenetic distinctiveness), climate and geographic barriers on parasite local distinctiveness and composition.

Results

Parasites were more locally distinct (co‐occurred with distantly related parasites) when infecting locally distinct hosts, but less distinct (co‐occurred with closely related parasites) in areas with increased host diversity and community connectivity (a proxy for parasite dispersal potential). Turnover and the phylogenetic symmetry of parasite communities were jointly driven by host turnover, climate similarity and geographic distance.

Main conclusions

Interspecies barriers linked to host phylogeny and dispersal shape parasite assembly, perhaps by limiting parasite establishment or local diversification. Infecting hosts that co‐occur with few related species decreases a parasite's likelihood of encountering related competitors, perhaps increasing invasion potential but decreasing diversification opportunity. While climate partially constrains parasite distributions, future host range expansions that spread distinct parasites and diminish barriers to host shifting will likely be key drivers of parasite invasions.  相似文献

Euneura augarusis a specialized ectohyperparasitoid of conifer lachnids, which causes considerable mortality in mummies of conifer lachnid parasitoids. For the search on a large scale, E. augarusfemales rely mainly on volatile secondary plant compounds of conifers to locate potential host plants. In the medium-range (i.e., on a given host plant), females detect the presence of hosts either during spiral search flights or during search by walking. Search flights were more effective when mummies were dispersed, while clumped mummies were mainly found by walking. On ant-attended trees, E. augaruswas not able to forage successfully. Choice experiments with Aphidius ervi-mummies showed that E. augarusis able to develop in species that are not attacked in the field. We hypothesize that the proximate mechanism of host plant specificity, and as a consequence, host aphid specificity seems to be the use of typical conifer volatiles for host finding which provide the `search image' for the species.  相似文献

In the adult stage, many parasitoids require hosts for their offspring growth and plant-derived food for their survival and metabolic needs. In agricultural fields, nectar provisioning can enhance biological control by increasing the longevity and fecundity of many species of parasitoids. Provided in a host patch, nectar can also increase patch quality for parasitoids and affect their foraging decisions, patch time residence, patch preference or offspring allocation. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of extrafloral nectar (EFN) provisioning close to hosts on parasitoid aggregation in patches. The aphid parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae (M’Intosh) was released inside or outside patches containing Brassica napus L. infested by Brevicoryne brassicae L. aphids and Vicia faba L. with or without EFN. When parasitoids were released outside patches, more parasitoids were observed in patches with EFN than in patches deprived of EFN. This higher recruitment could be linked to a higher attraction of a combination of host and food stimuli or a learning process. A release–recapture experiment of labeled parasitoids released within patches showed the higher retention of parasitoids in patches providing EFN and hosts, suggesting that food close to the host patch affects patch residence time. Both attractiveness and patch retention could be involved in the higher number of parasitoids foraging in host patches surrounded by nectar and for the higher parasitism recorded. Nectar provisioning in host patches also affected female offspring allocation inside the patch.  相似文献

Predation risk may affect the allocation priorities of limitingresources by potential prey. Investment in immune function shouldreceive reduced priority, when hosts are exposed to predatorsbecause of the costs of immune function. We tested this hypothesisby randomly exposing adult house sparrows, Passer domesticus,to either a cat, Felis catus, or a rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus,for 6 h while assessing their ability to raise a T-cell–mediatedimmune response to a challenge with phytohemagglutinin. Sparrowsexposed to a cat had a significant reduction of, on average,18% and 36% in T-cell response in two different experimentscompared with sparrows that were exposed to a rabbit. In a fieldexperiment with a barn owl, Tyto alba, or a rock dove, Columbalivia, placed next to a nest-box during laying, we found a meanreduction in T-cell–mediated immune response of 20%. Inmales, the reduction in cell-mediated immune response owingto cat exposure increased with increasing size of the badge,which is a secondary sexual character, but only during the breedingseason. In a third experiment, house sparrows were either exposedto a barn own, T. alba, or a rock dove, C. livia, and developmentof malarial infections was recorded during the following 6 weeks.Individual sparrows exposed to a predator had a higher prevalenceand intensity of Haemoproteus malarial infection than did controlindividuals. Therefore, exposure to predators reduced theirability of hosts to cope with parasitism mediated through effectson immune function.  相似文献

Retaliation against cheaters can prevent the breakdown of cooperation. Here we ask whether the ant-plant Cordia nodosa is able to apply retaliatory sanctions against its ant symbiont Allomerus octoarticulatus, which patrols new shoots to prevent herbivory. We test the hypothesis that the modular design of C. nodosa physiologically ties the growth of housing (stem swellings known as domatia) to the successful development of the attached leaves. We experimentally simulated herbivory by cutting leaves from patrolled shoots and found that the domatia on such 'cheated' shoots suffered higher mortality and lower growth than did controls, evidence for a host sanction. On the other hand, patrolling is costly to the ant, and experiment shows that non-patrollers run a low risk of being sanctioned because most leaves (and the attached domatia) escape heavy herbivory even when patrollers are absent. This suggests that cheaters might enjoy a higher fitness than do mutualists, despite sanctions, but we find that patrolling provides a net fecundity benefit when the colony and plant exceed a minimum size, which requires sustained ant investment in patrolling. These results map directly onto the principal-agent (P-A) game from economics, which we suggest can be used as a framework for studying stability in mutualisms, where high sampling costs and cheating do not allow market effects to select for mutual benefits.  相似文献
