Traditionally, Panarthropoda (Euarthropoda, Onychophora, Tardigrada) are regarded as being closely related to Annelida in a taxon Articulata, but this is not supported by molecular analyses. Comparisons of gene sequences suggest that all molting taxa (Panarthropoda, Nematoda, Nematomorpha, Priapulida, Kinorhyncha, Loricifera) are related in a monophyletic taxon Ecdysozoa. An examination of the characters supporting Articulata reveals that only segmentation with a teloblastic segment formation and the existence of segmental coelomic cavities with nephridia support the Articulata, whereas all other characters are modified or reduced in the panarthropod lineage. Another set of characters is presented that supports the monophyly of Ecdysozoa: molting under influence of ecdysteroid hormones, loss of locomotory cilia, trilayered cuticle and the formation of the epicuticle from the tips of epidermal microvilli. Comparative morphology suggests Gastrotricha as the sister group of Ecdysozoa with the synapomorphies: triradiate muscular sucking pharynx and terminal mouth opening. Thus there are morphological characters that support Articulata, but molecular as well as morphological data advocate Ecdysozoa. Comparison of both hypotheses should prompt further thorough and targeted investigations. J. Morphol. 238:263–285, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The sesquiterpene lactones isolated from species in the genus Artemisia have been reviewed in an attempt to better understand the phylogeny and systematics of the four sections (subgenera), Abrotanum, Absinthium, Dracunculus and Seriphidium, proposed by Besser in 1829. The absence of hair on the receptacle is the only morphological characteristic separating species of Abrotanum from the species of Absinthium. There are no chemical characteristics segregating the species in these two subgenera since both produce eudesmanolides and guaianolides that are identical or biosynthetically similar. This suggests that the two subgenera could be combined into one (Artemisia) as proposed by Poljakov. The subgenus Seriphidium is composed of two geographical groups, one in the Old World and the other in the New World. The Old World species almost exclusively produce sesquiterpene lactones in the eudesmanolide class whereas the New World species (section Tridentatae) produce eudesmanolides and guaianolides, many of the latter being identical or structurally related to the sesquiterpene lactones in New World Abrotanum species. The chemical data in conjunction with geographic distributions suggest that the subgenus Seriphidium is polyphyletic and that the section Tridentatae originated from Abrotanum. Consequently, the Tridentate should be recognized as a subgenus separate and distinct from the Old World Seriphidium. There was insufficient information from the subgenus Dracunculus for interpretation.  相似文献

The stepsirrhine primates, defined here as living tooth-combed primates, their immediate ancestor, and all of its descendants, are a diverse assemblage of mammals, viewed by some as exemplars of the richness of evolutionary innovation and by others as uninteresting “primitive” primates. Fortunately, the former view has taken precedence in recent years. The Strepsirrhini have been central to numerous debates touching on key issues such as the congruence of phylogeny to biogeography, the reliability of morphological characters for phylogeny reconstruction, and the relationship of living lineages to fossil lineages. Thanks to important theoretical and methodological advances, particularly within the arena of genetics, a robust picture of strepsirrhine phylogeny is emerging that casts light on these and numerous other evolutionary questions. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships, evolutionary history and systematics of tapeworms of the family Catenotaeniidae were studied using nucleotide sequences of the partial 28S nuclear rDNA (ca. 1,500 bp) and mitochondrial 12S–16S DNA (ca. 820 bp) genes. The tapeworm material consists of 29 species, including type species of the genera Catenotaenia Janicki, 1904, Catenotaenioides Haukisalmi, Hardman and Henttonen, 2010, Pseudocatenotaenia Tenora, Mas‐Coma, Murai and Feliu, 1980, Skrjabinotaenia Akhumyan, 1946, Meggittina Lynsdale, 1953, and Hemicatenotaenia Tenora, 1977. The basal phylogenetic structure of the Catenotaeniidae remains unresolved, but it is shown that most of the catenotaeniids in Eurasia and Africa comprise a large clade represented by species of Catenotaenia, Catenotaenioides, Skrjabinotaenia and Meggittina, parasitizing murid, cricetid, nesomyid and sciurid rodents. The results suggest that the divergence and early radiation of this clade have occurred in murid rodents (represented by Apodemus spp. and Mus musculus in the present material) in western Eurasia, followed by colonization of Africa, most likely independently of the colonization of their murid hosts between these continents. There is very little evidence of cophylogeny between hosts and parasites, suggesting that host transfers have played a major role in the divergence of catenotaeniids. In Africa, catenotaeniids have radiated in other murid and nesomyid rodents, and later colonized Madagascar and recolonized Eurasia. The results also show that the subfamily Skrjabinotaeniinae (including Skrjabinotaenia and Meggittina) is monophyletic, but the Catenotaeniinae (including Catenotaenia, Catenotaenioides, Pseudocatenotaenia and Hemicatenotaenia) is clearly non‐monophyletic. In addition, the genera Catenotaenia and Skrjabinotaenia were both found to be non‐monophyletic. Based on the phylogenetic and morphological evidence, several taxonomical changes, mainly new combinations, are proposed. Overall, the present results suggest that the family Catenotaeniidae is in need of major systematic revision.  相似文献

Our analysis of parts of the mitochondrial ribosomal 12S and 16S genes from 39 populations of Southeast Asian ranid frogs confirms that the fanged frogs are a monophyletic clade. This group, properly called Limnonectes, appears to have arisen in the early Tertiary at a time when free faunal exchange was possible among Southeast Asia, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and, probably, Sulawesi. Four species groups are tentatively identified within the clade. Part of group 1 includes species related to L. kuhlii that occur in Borneo. Another part of group 1 includes species from Malay Peninsula and Thailand that are related to L. pileata. Species group 2, L. leporina, occurs only in Borneo. Species group 3 is restricted to species distributed in Sulawesi and the Philippines. Species group 4 includes L. blythii and relatives. There is a lack of compatibility between phylogenetic hypotheses generated from molecular and morphological data sets. These differences are related, in large part, to whether some species of Limnonectes have secondarily lost fangs or whether lack of fangs represents the primitive condition.  相似文献

A new genus and species of Ziphiidae, Dagonodum mojnum gen. nov., sp. nov., from the upper Miocene Gram Formation (c. 9.9–7.2 Ma) represents the first occurrence of the family in Denmark. This long‐snouted ziphiid is characterized by two pairs of mandibular tusks, the Eustachian outlet that approximately levels with the dorsalmost margin of the posterior portion of the involucrum, and the left trapezoid nasal with a posteromedial projection into the frontal. A phylogenetic analysis including 25 species and 69 characters was conducted. Dagonodum mojnum is placed in a basal ziphiid clade as the sister taxon of Messapicetus. The specimen is probably a male, because it has enlarged tusks. Alternatively, females could also be involved in fights and develop erupted tusks as in the extant Berardius. Although less well supported, this interpretation proposes that aggressive interactions were not restricted to males in stem‐ziphiids. With a thickened thyrohyal and the presence of a precoronoid crest, D. mojnum was able to use suction feeding, but was less specialized to it compared to extant ziphiids. The elongated neck of D. mojnum less optimized to perform deep dives, and the shallow depth at which the Gram Formation was deposited corroborates the hypothesis that at least part of the stem‐ziphiids were not regular deep divers.  相似文献

The Permian terebratulids of Eurasia are revised. The taxonomic composition of the Permian terebratulids of the Russian Platform, Northern Caucasus, Transcaucasia, northern and southeastern Pamirs, and northern China (Inner Mongolia) is elucidated. Fifty-one species (13 described here as new), 21 genera (3 described here as new), 7 families, and 6 superfamilies are described. During the progress of the study, the author (Smirnova, 2004a, 2004b, 2006a, 2006b) and Smirnova and Grunt (2002, 2003a, 2003b) described for the first time 19 species, nine genera, two families, and one superfamily. Morphofunctional analysis reveals a great diversity of internal structures, of the time of their appearance in the ontogeny, and of their taxonomic significance. Ontogenetic study reveals phylogenetic relationships between the Permian and Meso-Cenozoic terebratulids, the presence of the superfamilies Terebratuloidea and Loboidothyroidea in the Permian, and a new type of brachidium ontogeny characterizing the superfamily Compositelasmatoidea. This book is intended for paleontologists and biologists interested in problems of taxonomy and phylogeny, and includes 5 plates, 80 figures, and 75 bibliographic references.  相似文献

The Guizhou snub‐nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus brelichi) is a primate species endemic to the Wuling Mountains in southern China. With a maximum of 800 wild animals, the species is endangered and one of the rarest Chinese primates. To assess the genetic diversity within R. brelichi and to analyze its genetic population structure, we collected fecal samples from the wild R. brelichi population and sequenced the hypervariable region I of the mitochondrial control region from 141 individuals. We compared our data with those from the two other Chinese snub‐nosed species (R. roxellana, R. bieti) and reconstructed their phylogenetic relationships and divergence times. With only five haplotypes and a maximum of 25 polymorphic sites, R. brelichi shows the lowest genetic diversity in terms of haplotype diversity (h), nucleotide diversity (π), and average number of pairwise nucleotide differences (Π). The most recent common ancestor of R. brelichi lived ~0.36 million years ago (Ma), thus more recently than those of R. roxellana (~0.91 Ma) and R. bieti (~1.33 Ma). Phylogenetic analysis and analysis of molecular variance revealed a clear and significant differentiation among the three Chinese snub‐nosed monkey species. Population genetic analyses (Tajima's D, Fu's Fs, and mismatch distribution) suggest a stable population size for R. brelichi. For the other two species, results point in the same direction, but population substructure possibly introduces some ambiguity. Because of the lower genetic variation, the smaller population size and the more restricted distribution, R. brelichi might be more vulnerable to environmental changes or climate oscillations than the other two Chinese snub‐nosed monkey species. Mammalodon colliveri is an unusual toothed archaic mysticete (Cetacea) from the Upper Oligocene Jan Juc Formation of south‐east Australia. The morphology of the holotype skull and postcrania are described in detail. Superimposed on the generally plesiomorphic archaeocete‐like morphology of Mammalodon are subtle mysticete synapomorphies. Derived features of Mammalodon include a short and bluntly rounded rostrum, reduced premaxillae, and anterodorsally directed orbits. Within Mysticeti, this suite of features is unique. The aberrant rostral morphology of Mammalodon suggests specialization for suction feeding. Janjucetus hunderi is placed in an expanded family Mammalodontidae. Phylogenetic analysis corroborates the monophyly of Basilosauridae, Neoceti, Odontoceti, and Mysticeti, and yields a novel hypothesis of toothed mysticete relationships: a basal clade of undescribed toothed mysticetes from South Carolina, a Llanocetidae + Mammalodontidae clade, and monophyletic Aetiocetidae are posited as successive sister taxa to edentulous baleen whales (Chaeomysticeti). Toothed archaic mysticetes clearly employed diverse prey capture strategies, with exaptations for filter feeding evolving sequentially in stem group Mysticeti. A stratigraphically calibrated phylogeny implies that the initial diversification of Mysticeti occurred during the Late Eocene. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 158 , 367–476.  相似文献

The morphology of the larval hyobranchial apparatus of discoglossoid frog species representing the genera Ascaphus, Alytes, Bombina, and Discoglossus is described and the resulting characters were analysed cladistically. Seven species representing seven major lineages of frogs were included in the cladistic analysis of characters. Several changes in the terminology of the musculature are introduced, and a new interpretation of the subarcualis-muscle system is presented. The phylogenetic analysis suggest that the hyobranchial apparatus was substantially altered in the lineages leading to and within the Pipanura. This notably involved fusion, reduction and loss of skeletal structures and muscles, and splitting of certain muscles into muscle groups. The result confirm previous hypotheses based on the study of adults: discoglossoid species retain the most numlerous plesiomorphic characters among extant ianurans. The larval hyobranchial apparatus is in many features structrually similar to that of urodeles. Many of their character states were most likely present in the most recent common ancestor of all living forgs. The cladistic analysis of 31 characters of ithe larval hyobranchial apparatus supports major clades: Anura, Bombinanura, Pipanura, and Pelobatoidea + Neobatrachia. The cladiostic analysis and interpretation of larval characters is in part compatible with phylogenetic hypotheses based on characters of adults and rRNA sequences, but is in conflict with the Mesobatrachia and Archaeobatrachia concepts of other authors.  相似文献

The Aeolosomatidae and the Parergodrilidae are meiofaunal Annelida showing different combinations of clitellate‐like and non‐clitellate character states. Their phylogenetic positions and their systematic status within the Annelida are still in debate. Here we attempt to infer their systematic position using 18S rDNA sequences of the aeolosomatid Aeolosoma sp. and the parergodrilid Stygocapitella subterranea and several other meiofaunal taxa such as the Dinophilidae, Polygordiidae and Saccocirridae. The data matrix was complemented by sequences from several annelid, arthropod and molluscan species. After evaluation of the phylogenetic signal the data set was analysed with maximum‐parsimony, distance and maximum‐likelihood algorithms. Sequences from selected arthropods or molluscs were chosen for outgroup comparison. The resolution of the resulting phylogenies is discussed in comparison to previous studies. The results do not unequivocally support a sister‐group relationship of Aeolosoma sp. and the Clitellata. Instead, depending on the algorithms applied, Aeolosoma clusters in various clades within the polychaetes, for instance, together with eunicidan species, the Dinophilidae, Harmothoë impar or Nereis limbata. The position of Aeolosoma sp. thus cannot be resolved on the basis of the data available. S. subterranea always falls close to a cluster comprising Scoloplos armiger, Questa paucibranchiata and Magelona mirabilis, all of which were resolved as not closely related to both Aeolosoma sp. and the Clitellata. Therefore, convergent evolution of clitellate‐like characters in S. subterranea and hence in the Parergodrilidae is suggested by our phylogenetic analysis. Moreover, the Clitellata form a monophyletic clade within the paraphyletic polychaetes.  相似文献

The systematic features of a small West African marine gobiid fish, Gobius nigricinctus Delais 1951, are redescribed from the holotype with special emphasis on the head lateral-line canal and sensory papillae (tree neuromast) systems. A junior synonym is found to be Gobius lepidogenys Robins 1970. The status of G. nigricinctus is best expressed in a new monotypic genus, Gorogobius , with closest affinity to the Atlantic-Mediterranean Corcyrogobius and Odondebuenia , Similarities in head sensory papillae arrangement exist between Gorogobius and certain 'seven-spined' genera of the New World tropical insular fauna, but G. nigricinctus is shown not to be a recent transatlantic immigrant. The validity of the tribe Gobiosomini as a natural grouping endemic to the Americas is questioned. Close resemblance in striped coloration between Gorogobius and small Indo-West Pacific gobies, especially Quisquilius eugenius , is shown to be the result of convergent evolution.  相似文献

We studied social organization, behavior, and range use of the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) at Wuyapiya (99°12E, 28°30N, the People's Republic of China) over 12 months between May 1992 and June 1994. The Wuyapiya band contained 175 members and had two levels of social organization. At one level, the monkeys formed multifemale, one-male units (OMUs) similar to those of many other colobines. At another level, 15 to 18 OMUs traveled together in a cohesive band. Unlike the bands of other species of Rhinopithecus, the Wuyapiya band of R. bieti did not show seasonal fission–fusion, although some social behavior, such as male–male aggression, was seasonal. With regard to range use, the Wuyapiya band had a large home range and long daily travel distances compared with other colobines. Minimum range size in 1 year at Wuyapiya is 16.25 km 2 , although there is no asymptote for range size as a function of observation time. Range size for the Wuyapiya band is 25.25 km 2 over the 2-year study and appeared to cover 100 km 2 between 1985 and 1994. The primary food of R. bieti at Wuyapiya is lichens, which are ubiquitous in fir trees. The multitiered social organization of R. bieti appears to result from the interaction of food resource characters with the forces of mate competition, with band sizes based on female responses to the spatial and temporal characteristics of lichens and subdivisions within bands based on male competition for mates.  相似文献

The cranial anatomy of Dinilysia patagonica, a terrestrial snake from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina, is redescribed and illustrated, based on high‐resolution X‐ray computed tomography and better preparations made on previously known specimens, including the holotype. Previously unreported characters reinforce the intriguing mosaic nature of the skull of Dinilysia, with a suite of plesiomorphic and apomorphic characters with respect to extant snakes. Newly recognized plesiomorphies are the absence of the medial vertical flange of the nasal, lateral position of the prefrontal, lizard‐like contact between vomer and palatine, floor of the recessus scalae tympani formed by the basioccipital, posterolateral corners of the basisphenoid strongly ventrolaterally projected, and absence of a medial parietal pillar separating the telencephalon and mesencephalon, amongst others. We also reinterpreted the structures forming the otic region of Dinilysia, confirming the presence of a crista circumfenestralis, which represents an important derived ophidian synapomorphy. Both plesiomorphic and apomorphic traits of Dinilysia are treated in detail and illustrated accordingly. Results of a phylogenetic analysis support a basal position of Dinilysia, as the sister‐taxon to all extant snakes. The fossil taxa Yurlunggur, Haasiophis, Eupodophis, Pachyrhachis, and Wonambi appear as derived snakes nested within the extant clade Alethinophidia, as stem‐taxa to the crown‐clade Macrostomata. The hypothesis of a sister‐group relationship between Dinilysia and Najash rionegrina, as suggested by some authors, is rejected by the results of our analysis. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 164 , 194–238.  相似文献

An overview of the literature changes in the systematics of algae in the order Laminariales (Phaeophyta) based on molecular phylogentic data is given. In a recent taxonomic revision by Lane et al., [45], the number and status of the families traditionally included in the order have been revised. One family was transferred to the order Tilopteridales; a new family, the Costariaceae, was described; and the genus Laminaria was split into 2 genera, Laminaria and a newly resurrected genus Saccharina. These innovations have necessitated a systematic revision of the Far Eastern species of the Laminariales. Our genetic studies indicate that 2 species of Laminaria and 12 intraspecific taxa (1 subspecies and 11 forms) from the Russian Pacific coasts should be transferred to the genus Saccharina. The following new nomenclatural combinations are proposed: Saccharina bongardiana, comb. nov. (including 4 forms: f. bifurcata, f. subsessilis, f. subsimplex, f. taeniata) and Saccharina gurjanovae, comb. nov. (including f. lanciformis). In addition, new nomenclature combinations are proposed for intraspecific taxa of the Laminaria species (L. angustata, L. cichorioides, L. japonica) that have already been transferred to the genus Saccharina [45]. These include S. angustata subsp. sibirica, comb. nov., 4 new combinations for the forms of S. cichorioides (f. coriacea, f. sacchalinensis, f. sikotanensis, and f. sinuicola), and 2 new combinations for the forms of S. japonica (f. diabolica, and f. longipes). The taxonomic status of the rest of the members of the Laminariales known from the seas of the Russian Far East is discussed. Laminariaceous algae in this area represent 6 of the 8 known families currently included in the Laminariales (Chordaceae, Pseudochordaceae, Alariaceae, Arthrothamnaceae, Laminariaceae, and Costariaceae).  相似文献

A morphological dataset based on 14 standard counts and indices was constructed for 68 specimens comprising 12 species of octopuses. This was used to construct distance matrices based on morphological characters. These matrices were compared with genetic distance matrices compiled during molecular phylogenetic analyses of the same 12 species using four mitochondrial and two nuclear genes. Mantel tests showed that there was significant congruence between the phenetic and genetic matrices, suggesting that the genetic signal is reflected in the morphological data set. Matrices of geographical distance were constructed for the 12 species based on the latitude, longitude, and depth of capture of 1726 individuals. These matrices never showed significant congruence with genetic data or with morphological data. Multivariate analysis of the morphological dataset suggests that these counts and indices, traditionally used for discriminating between species in cephalopods, do not show great discrimination at species level, but provide excellent discrimination at the generic level, and, as such, might be useful for resolving the generic placement of some problematic taxa. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 205–218.  相似文献
