Climate change is resulting in rapid poleward shifts in the geographical distribution of tropical and subtropical fish species. We can expect that such range shifts are likely to be limited by species-specific resource requirements, with temperate rocky reefs potentially lacking a range of settlement substrates or specific dietary components important in structuring the settlement and success of tropical and subtropical fish species. We examined the importance of resource use in structuring the distribution patterns of range shifting tropical and subtropical fishes, comparing this with resident temperate fish species within western Japan (Tosa Bay); the abundance, diversity, size class, functional structure and latitudinal range of reef fishes utilizing both coral reef and adjacent rocky reef habitat were quantified over a 2 year period (2008–2010). This region has undergone rapid poleward expansion of reef-building corals in response to increasing coastal water temperatures, and forms one of the global hotspots for rapid coastal changes. Despite the temperate latitude surveyed (33°N, 133°E) the fish assemblage was both numerically, and in terms of richness, dominated by tropical fishes. Such tropical faunal dominance was apparent within both coral, and rocky reef habitats. The size structure of the assemblage suggested that a relatively large number of tropical species are overwintering within both coral and rocky habitats, with a subset of these species being potentially reproductively active. The relatively high abundance and richness of tropical species with obligate associations with live coral resources (i.e., obligate corallivores) shows that this region holds the most well developed temperate-located tropical fish fauna globally. We argue that future tropicalisation of the fish fauna in western Japan, associated with increasing coral habitat development and reported increasing shifts in coastal water temperatures, may have considerable positive economic impacts to the local tourism industry and bring qualitative changes to both local and regional fisheries resources. 相似文献

In marginal tropical areas, air temperature in winter usually decreases by 10℃ compared with summer at night/day. Although tropical plants are sensitive to low temperature, the mechanism underlying photosynthetic acclimation of tropical trees to winter low temperature is unclear. To address this question, the photosystem I (PSI) and photosystem II (PSII) activities, and energy distribution in PSI and PSII were examined in summer and winter in two tropical high quality timber tree species Erythrophleum guineense and Dalbergia odorifera grown in a marginal tropical area (21°54′N, 101°46′E). Our results indicated that the photosynthetic apparatus of Eguineense and Dodorifera was maintained stable in winter. The effective quantum yield of PSII decreased significantly in winter, but non photochemical quenching (NPQ) significantly increased. In winter, cyclic electron flow (CEF) was significantly stimulated in both species, which was significantly and positively correlated with NPQ. Meanwhile, the stimulation of CEF led to an increase in P700 oxidation ratio and the over reduction of PSI acceptor side was prevented. Antimycin A (a specific inhibitor of PGR5 dependent CEF) significantly aggravated PSII photoinhibition under high light in both species. These results suggested that stimulation of CEF is an important mechanism for photosynthetic acclimation to winter low temperature in a marginal tropical area in the two tropical tree species. 相似文献

Reef fish sustain populations on isolated reefs and show genetic diversity between nearby reefs even though larvae of many species are swept away from the natal site during pelagic dispersal. Retention or recruitment to natal reefs requires orientation capabilities that enable larvae to find their way. Although olfactory and acoustically based orientation has been implicated in homing when larvae are in the reef’s vicinity, it is still unclear how they cope with greater distances. Here we show evidence for a sun compass mechanism that can bring the larvae to the vicinity of their natal reef. In a circular arena, pre-settlement larvae and early settlers (<24 hours) of the cardinal fish, Ostorhinchus doederleini, showed a strong SSE directional swimming response, which most likely has evolved to compensate for the locally prevailing large scale NNW current drift. When fish were clock-shifted 6 hours, they changed their orientation by ca. 180° as predicted by the tropical sun curve at One Tree Island, i.e. they used a time-compensated sun compass. Furthermore, the fish oriented most consistently at times of the day when the sun azimuth is easy to determine. Microsatellite markers showed that the larvae that had just arrived at One Tree Island genetically belonged to either the local reef population or to Fitzroy Reef located 12 kilometers to the SSE. The use of a sun compass adds a missing long-distance link to the hierarchy of other sensory abilities that can direct larvae to the region of origin, including their natal reef. Predominant local recruitment, in turn, can contribute to genetic isolation and potential speciation. 相似文献

This study examines how O2 status, respiration rate, and nitrogenase activity of soybean (Glycine max) nodules acclimate to short-term (<30 min) temperature change from 20 to 15[deg]C or from 20 to 25[deg]C. Acclimation responses were compared between nodules on uninhibited plants and nodules that were severely O2 limited by exposure to Ar:O2. In uninhibited nodules the decrease in temperature caused a rapid inhibition of nitrogenase activity followed by partial recovery, whereas in Ar:O2-inhibited nodules the temperature decrease caused a minor stimulation followed by a gradual decline in nitrogenase activity. In contrast, the temperature increase caused a gradual increase in nitrogenase activity in uninhibited nodules, and an initial inhibition followed by a rapid rise in Ar:O2-inhibited nodules. In both uninhibited and Ar:O2-inhibited nodules, temperature had only minor effects on the degree to which nitrogenase activity was limited by O2 supply, but nodule permeability to O2 diffusion was greater at 25[deg]C, and less at 15[deg]C, than that measured at 20[deg]C. On the basis of these data, we propose that temperature change alters the nodule's respiratory demand and that the observed changes in nodule permeability occur to maintain control over the infected cell O2 concentration as the O2 demand increases at high temperature or decreases at low temperature. 相似文献

Six fish species were studied in an intermittent lowland stream in Trinidad, West Indies for 28 months from 1980 to 1982. They were Gasteropelecus sternicla, Corynopoma riisei, Astyanax bimaculatus, Hemigrammus unilineatus, Corydoras aeneus and Poecilia reticulata. Peaks in GSIs and presence of mature adults and juveniles, as determined from monthly field collections, indicated reproduction coincident with the rainy seasons in all species except Poecilia. Gasteropelecus bred for a short period at the beginning of the main rainy season while Corynopoma, Corydoras and Hemigrammus had extended periods of breeding activity each year coincident with high rainfall. The presence of juveniles suggests that Astyanax also bred during the rainy season. Poecilia reproduced continuously throughout the study period but exhibited discharge-related adult stock fluctuations that may have influenced reproductive activity. Maximum ovarian fecundity correlated with species size suggested body size limitation on fecundity for small species such as Corynopoma and Hemigrammus. Size frequency distributions of oocytes in mature ovaries indicate synchronised ovum maturation in Astyanax and possibly Gasteropelecus, while Hemigrammus, Corynopoma and Corydoras showed evidence of continuous maturation of oocytes and multiple spawning. Prolonged small brood spawning was confirmed in the laboratory for Corynopoma and Hemigrammus and resulted in spawning fecundities up to 11 times greater than ovarian fecundities for Corynopoma. It is concluded that the conditions of intermittency in this stream did not significantly alter the reproductive styles of these species as described for other Neotropical environments, perhaps because of their opportunistic nature. Recent studies have shown that elevated CO2 can affect the behaviour of larval and juvenile fishes. In particular, behavioural lateralization, an expression of brain functional asymmetries, is affected by elevated CO2 in both coral reef and temperate fishes. However, the potentially interacting effects of rising temperatures and CO2 on lateralization are unknown. Here, we tested the combined effect of near-future elevated-CO2 concentrations (930 µatm) and temperature variation on behavioural lateralization of a marine damselfish, Pomacentrus wardi. Individuals exposed to one of four treatments (two CO2 levels and two temperatures) were observed in a detour test where they made repeated decisions about turning left or right. Individuals exposed to current CO2 and ambient temperature levels showed a significant right-turning bias at the population level. This biased was reversed (i.e. to the left side) in fish exposed to the elevated-CO2 treatment. Increased temperature attenuated this effect, resulting in lower values of relative lateralization. Consequently, rising temperature and elevated CO2 may have different and interactive effects on behavioural lateralization and therefore future studies on the effect of climate change on brain functions need to consider both these critical variables in order to assess the potential consequences for the ecological interactions of marine fishes. 相似文献

The behavior of reef fish larvae, equipped with a complex toolbox of sensory apparatus, has become a central issue in understanding their transport in the ocean. In this study pelagic reef fish larvae were monitored using an unmanned open-ocean tracking device, the drifting in-situ chamber (DISC), deployed sequentially in oceanic waters and in reef-born odor plumes propagating offshore with the ebb flow. A total of 83 larvae of two taxonomic groups of the families Pomacentridae and Apogonidae were observed in the two water masses around One Tree Island, southern Great Barrier Reef. The study provides the first in-situ evidence that pelagic reef fish larvae discriminate reef odor and respond by changing their swimming speed and direction. It concludes that reef fish larvae smell the presence of coral reefs from several kilometers offshore and this odor is a primary component of their navigational system and activates other directional sensory cues. The two families expressed differences in their response that could be adapted to maintain a position close to the reef. In particular, damselfish larvae embedded in the odor plume detected the location of the reef crest and swam westward and parallel to shore on both sides of the island. This study underlines the critical importance of in situ Lagrangian observations to provide unique information on larval fish behavioral decisions. From an ecological perspective the central role of olfactory signals in marine population connectivity raises concerns about the effects of pollution and acidification of oceans, which can alter chemical cues and olfactory responses. 相似文献

干季末雨季初以西双版纳热带雨林中木奶果和玉蕊2种树苗为材料,研究了将生长于12.5%自然光(相当于小林窗的光强)和36%自然光(相当于大林窗的光强)下的这2种树苗分别移至36%自然光和12.5%自然光下之后各自叶片最大净光合速率(Pmax)、叶绿素荧光参数、光合色素含量、比叶重(LMA)以及叶片悬挂角(MA)的变化过程,探讨了2种植物幼苗在生长环境光强改变后其形态和生理生态特性做出的相应调整以适应新的光环境的过程与机制。结果表明,这2种树苗均不适宜生长在大林窗的强光环境下,但木奶果对光环境的增强表现出一定的耐受力,光合适应潜力强于玉蕊,2种树苗对低光环境都能较好地适应;新叶的生成在整株植物对生长光环境变化的适应过程中也起到至关重要的作用。 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The ability of scleractinian corals to survive changesthat are predicted in the global environment over the next centurywill lie in their physiological mechanisms of acclimatization.Corals display rapid modifications in behavior, morphology andphysiology enabling them to photoacclimate to changing lightconditions, a scenario that demonstrates considerable biologicalflexibility. Here we argue that the acclimatization mechanismsin corals are fundamentally similar to those exhibited by otherinvertebrate taxa. We discuss protein metabolism as a mechanismunderlying acclimatization responses in reef corals, and explorethe relationship between protein turnover, metabolic rate, growthrate, and acclimatization capacity. Our preliminary analysessuggest that corals with low growth rates (µCa/mgN/h)and high metabolic rates (µO2/cm2/hr), such as the massivespecies, acclimatize more effectively than those with high growthrates and low metabolic rates, a feature that is characteristicof branching species. We conclude that studies of protein turnover,combined with temporally relevant investigations into the dynamicaspects of coral dinoflagellate symbioses will provide considerableinsight into why corals exhibit such a high level of variationin response to the same environmental challenge. Furthermore,a more detailed understanding of acclimatization mechanismsis essential if we are to predict how a coral assemblage willrespond to present and future environmental challenges. 相似文献

Direct selection for increased resistance to a heat shock (41.9° for 90 min) was carried out using two replicate lines of Drosophila buzzatii that were derived from a large base population. Selected individuals were first acclimated to high temperature before selection, while control individuals were acclimated but not selected, and selection was performed every second generation. Resistance to heat shock with acclimation increased in selected lines. Without acclimation, a correlated smaller increase in heat-shock resistance was suggested. Survival of males was higher than that of females in all lines when tested with acclimation, but with direct exposure to high temperatures, survival of females was greater than that of males both in selection and control lines but not in the base population. From analysis of reciprocal cross progeny between lines, one selection line was found to possess a dominant autosomal factor that significantly increased resistance of males much more than resistance of females. Also suggestive was recessive traits on the X chromosome in both selection lines that increased thermotolerance. No cytoplasmic effects were found. After accounting for other effects, survival of F(1) flies was intermediate, suggesting that additive variation is present for one or more of the autosomes. 相似文献

Although spearfishing is a popular method of capturing fish, its ecological effects on fish populations are poorly understood, which makes it difficult to assess the legitimacy and desirability of spearfishing in multi-use marine reserves. Recent management changes within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) fortuitously created a unique scenario by which to quantify the effects of spearfishing on fish populations. As such, we employed underwater visual surveys and a before-after-control-impact experimental design to investigate the effects of spearfishing on the density and size structure of target and non-target fishes in a multi-use conservation park zone (CPZ) within the GBRMP. Three years after spearfishing was first allowed in the CPZ, there was a 54% reduction in density and a 27% reduction in mean size of coral trout (Plectropomus spp.), the primary target species. These changes were attributed to spearfishing because benthic habitat characteristics and the density of non-target fishes were stable through time, and the density and mean size of coral trout in a nearby control zone (where spearfishing was prohibited) remained unchanged. We conclude that spearfishing, like other forms of fishing, can have rapid and substantial negative effects on target fish populations. Careful management of spearfishing is therefore needed to ensure that conservation obligations are achieved and that fishery resources are harvested sustainably. This is particularly important both for the GBRMP, due to its extraordinarily high conservation value and world heritage status, and for tropical island nations where people depend on spearfishing for food and income. To minimize the effects of spearfishing on target species and to enhance protection of functionally important fishes (herbivores), we recommend that fishery managers adjust output controls such as size- and catch-limits, rather than prohibit spearfishing altogether. This will preserve the cultural and social importance of spearfishing in coastal communities where it is practised. 相似文献

Synopsis Many recognised species of coral reef fishes exhibit two or more colour variants, but it is unknown whether these represent
genetically identical phenotypes, genetic polymorphisms or closely related species. We tested between these alternatives for
two colour morphs of the coral reef fish, Pseudochromis fuscus, from Lizard Island (Great Barrier Reef). A molecular analysis using mtDNA did not detect any genetic differentiation between
co-occurring ‘yellow’ and ‘brown’ colour morphs. A previous study proposed that these two colour morphs are aggressive mimics
of yellow and brown damselfishes. Here, a manipulative field experiment was used to evaluate whether the colour dimorphism
in P. fuscus is a phenotypic response to the presence of two different model species. Colonies of either yellow or brown damselfish species
were established on different patch reefs, and each of the two different P. fuscus morphs was then placed on the different reefs. Contrary to expectations, all yellow individuals that stayed on the reefs
changed to brown, regardless of the model species. No brown individuals changed to the yellow colouration. However, P. fuscus were more likely to emigrate from, or suffer higher mortality on, patch reefs where they were not matched with similarly
coloured models. Clearly, yellow and brown P. fuscus are members of a single species with sufficient phenotypic plasticity to switch from yellow to brown colouration. 相似文献
