This study examined the relationship between onset latencies estimates from EMG and center of pressure (COP) in young (five female, five male; mean=24.2+/-2.3 years) and older (six female, four male; 78.4+/-2.3 years) subjects during anterior or posterior platform translations. The latencies to onset of activity were estimated for the tibialis anterior (TA; mean=119.8 ms across both age groups) and COP (mean=139.7 ms across both groups) for anterior translations, and the soleus (SOL; mean=122.4 ms across both groups), gastrocnemius (GAS; mean=126.0 ms for young, and 115.9 ms for old subjects) and COP (mean=160.0 ms across both groups) for posterior translations. Average within-subject correlations (r') among these measures showed a high correlation between TA and COP onset latency (r'=0.667, young; r'=0.482, old), and relatively low correlations between the plantar flexors (SOL and GAS) and COP onset latencies (SOL: r'=0.292 for young, r'=0.249 for old; GAS: r'=0.126 for young, r'=0.143 for old). The SOL and GAS onset latencies correlated well with each other, especially in the older subjects (r'=0.762), suggesting that the contribution of two muscles creates some variability in the relationship with COP onset latency. The strong correlation between TA and COP for anterior perturbations, coupled with the weaker correlations for the plantar flexors suggest that the COP method may be preferable for studies interested in determining timing of postural responses to multidirectional perturbations.  相似文献

During the excavations of the XIX century Meadowlark cemetery (Manhattan, Kansas, US), samples of sediments were taken from around five skeletons, and analyzed to detect intestinal parasites. No helminth eggs were found, but immunological ELISA tests for Entamoeba histolytica were positive in three samples. The immunological techniques have been successfully used in paleoparasitology to detect protozoan infections. Amoebiasis could have been a severe disease in the past, especially where poor sanitary conditions prevailed, and there is evidence that this cemetery may have been used in a situation where poor sanitary conditions may have prevailed. The presence of this protozoan in US during the late XIX century gives information on the health of the population and provides additional data on the parasite's evolution since its appearance in the New World.  相似文献

Recent evidence has shown that a variety of prostaglandins and leukotrienes can be produced in brain tissue after injury in animals. It has also been speculated that increases in brain prostaglandins occur in humans following injury. Ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples have been obtained from children with static lesions (controls) as well as children with acute brain injury and eicosanoids measured by immunologic techniques. Metabolites of prostacyclin (6-keto-PGF1 a) and thromboxane A2 (thromboxane B2) were the major eicosanoids found in CSF, and levels of these compounds were increased 3-10 times in acutely injured patients. Prostaglandin E2 was also found in lower amounts, although in one case its level was very high. Prostaglandin D2 was also present, but in low amounts. No leukotrienes were found in CSF samples that were purified by HPLC prior to immunoassay. Elevated levels of hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) were observed in those samples stored frozen, but these metabolites were most probably due to autooxidation of arachidonic acid in CSF. Arachidonic acid concentration in CSF was typically found to be in the range of 10-200 ng/ml, but was found to be 5-10 fold higher in one severely injured patient. Thus, elevated free arachidonic acid and various oxygenated metabolites were observed in CSF following brain injury.  相似文献

—Aqueous-soluble brain proteins from 100 adult humans have been screened by discontinuous polyacrylamide and by continuous-SDS-polyacrylamide electrophoresis for evidence of genetically determined variation. In addition 42 adult Macaca nemestrina and 36 inbred strains of mice were screened in the SDS-continuous system. No variation in position of major bands was found within species, although differences in relative intensity of staining were noted. Fetal human cerebral cortex gave profiles of aqueous-soluble proteins distinguishable from that of adults. After affinity chromatography on Concanavalin-A-agarose, adult samples gave one band on SDS-polyacrylamide gels, while fetal samples gave the same band plus an additional band, presumably representing glycoproteins.  相似文献

This paper reports prevalence of coccidial oocysts in fecal samples from 6 endemic and 2 introduced lizard species on Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Total coccidian prevalence was 54% (n = 341) for the endemic 'ornate day gecko,' Phelsuma ornata; 48% (n = 159) for the endemic 'Durrell's night gecko,' Nactus durrelli; 53% (n = 15) for the endemic 'Serpent Island night gecko,' N. serpensinsula; and 78% (n = 248) for the introduced gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus. These high prevalences may reflect lack of long-lasting immune response to coccidial infection. There were few significant differences in prevalence among age, island, sex, or body condition within species, suggesting that these coccidia are relatively nonpathogenic and have little effect on host fitness. Prevalence was higher in the dry season than the wet season. These data suggest other factors, such as low host immune response to reinfection, affect overall prevalence more significantly than the effect of humidity on oocyst survival on Mauritius. No coccidia were found in samples from the endemic 'Gunner's Quoin night gecko,' N. coindemirensis (n = 155), probably reflecting parasite extinction due to a host population bottleneck following historical introduction of rats. There was no evidence of competitive or facilitative interactions between Eimeria sp. and Isospora sp., but evidence of competition between 2 Eimeria species in the 'ornate day gecko,' Phelsuma ornata. No evidence was found of cross-species infection, suggesting that reptile coccidia have high host specificity and are, therefore, poor subjects for studies of parasite-mediated competition and the evolution of sex.  相似文献

Two hundred black and white adult human skeletons and 200 living black and white children from the greater Cleveland area were examined for evidence of enamel hypoplasia. Enamel hypoplasia, present in varying expressings (pits, lines and grooves), was found to be more prevalent in both skeletal samples, than in the living groups. In the majority of cases, sex differences between white and black males and females through time and space are highly significant for all tooth catagories. Regardless of the mechanisms behind it, prevalence of enamel hypoplasia for both white and black group has significantly declined through time. No evidence suggesting specific etiologies responsible for enamel hypoplasia can be found. In the majority of previously published reports, the etiology is still idiopathic. The reduction in the prevalence of enamel hypoplasia in the groups examined through time may be related to improved nutritional conditions and the elimination or decline of childhood diseases that have been implicated in this condition.  相似文献

The human mitochondrial genome has an exclusively maternal mode of inheritance. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is particularly vulnerable to environmental insults due in part to an underdeveloped DNA repair system, limited to base excision and homologous recombination repair. Radiation exposure to the ovaries may cause mtDNA mutations in oocytes, which may in turn be transmitted to offspring. We hypothesized that the children of female cancer survivors who received radiation therapy may have an increased rate of mtDNA heteroplasmy mutations, which conceivably could increase their risk of developing cancer and other diseases. We evaluated 44 DNA blood samples from 17 Danish and 1 Finnish families (18 mothers and 26 children). All mothers had been treated for cancer as children and radiation doses to their ovaries were determined based on medical records and computational models. DNA samples were sequenced for the entire mitochondrial genome using the Illumina GAII system. Mother's age at sample collection was positively correlated with mtDNA heteroplasmy mutations. There was evidence of heteroplasmy inheritance in that 9 of the 18 families had at least one child who inherited at least one heteroplasmy site from his or her mother. No significant difference in single nucleotide polymorphisms between mother and offspring, however, was observed. Radiation therapy dose to ovaries also was not significantly associated with the heteroplasmy mutation rate among mothers and children. No evidence was found that radiotherapy for pediatric cancer is associated with the mitochondrial genome mutation rate in female cancer survivors and their children.  相似文献

A recursive estimation scheme, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) technique, was applied to study enzymatic deactivation in the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated cellulose using a model previously developed by the authors. When no deactivation model was assumed, the results showed no variation with time for all the model parameters except for the maximum rate of cellobiose-to-glucose conversion (r'(m)).The r'(m) variation occurred in two zones with a grace period. A new model of enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated cellulose deactivation was proposed and validated showing better behavior than the old deactivation model. This approach allows one to study enzyme deactivation without additional experiments and within operational conditions.  相似文献

An analysis is presented of data collected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at six unlinked variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) loci for the United States population. Databases have been constructed of VNTR profiles of Caucasians, Blacks and Hispanics from Florida, Texas and California. There was very little evidence for correlations between lengths for pairs of VNTR fragments, within or between loci. When the fragment lengths were amalgamated into discrete bins, there was also little evidence for disequilibrium over all genotypes, within or between loci, for the Caucasian database, although some disequilibrium was found for the Black and Hispanic databases. No disequilibrium was found for the Caucasian or Black databases when tests were confined to heterozygous individuals. In cases of global disequilibrium, local tests can be applied to specific genotypes. The results suggest that, at the bin level, frequencies of VNTR profiles can generally be estimated as the products of the frequencies of the constituent elements. This overcomes the problem of estimating population frequencies when any particular profile does not exist in the database. There is some evidence for different frequencies, at the individual bin level, between geographic samples within each of the Caucasian, Black and Hispanic databases, and considerable evidence for differences between the three databases. These differences are less evident for the frequencies of four-locus profiles.  相似文献

The relationships of the microsoroid ferns were studied using a DNA sequence-based phylogenetic approach. Nucleotide sequences for up to four chloroplast genome regions were assembled for 107 samples from 87 species. Microsoroids s.l. include six lineages of which two are species rich. The results indicate that several genera are not monophyletic (e.g. Microsorum), several controversial genera are confirmed to be monophyletic (e.g. Leptochilus), and some genera new to science should be recognized (M. membranaceum clade). Unique insights were gained into the biogeographic history of this highly diverse epiphytic vascular plant lineage that is widespread in continental Asia to Australasia. Evidence was found for splits into lineages diversifying in parallel in continental Asia and Malesia. No evidence was recovered for an African radiation because all African microsoroid species either also are found in Asia or have sister species in continental Asia. In contrast, evidence for independent radiations were discovered for the Australasian region.  相似文献

Increased mortality of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), related to lowered levels of stored energy following the loss of ice cover during winter, has been observed after hydropower development in the subarctic River Alta, northern Norway. Drift samples were compared to examine if drift densities, and thus drift prey availabilities for juvenile salmon, were lower in the ice-free than the ice-covered area. In addition, juvenile salmon stomach contents were compared to benthos and drift in the ice-free area to examine salmon winter feeding habitat. Zooplankton, originating from the reservoir, dominated drift at the ice-free site but had lower densities at the downstream ice-covered site. Excluding zooplankton, Chironomidae comprised most of the remaining drift at both the ice-free and ice-covered site, followed by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Simuliidae. No Trichoptera were found in the drift samples. There was no consistent diel periodicity in drift. Benthos was dominated by Chironomidae, followed by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera. Other invertebrates occurred in low numbers. Juvenile salmon demonstrated size-selective feeding and fed mainly on Ephemeroptera, followed by Trichoptera and Plecoptera. No zooplankton and few Chironomidae were found in the stomach samples. Stomach content was more similar to benthos than to drift, indicating a larger extent of benthic than drift feeding. No evidence was found for the hypothesis that lack of ice cover reduced the invertebrate drift or caused diel periodicity in the drift. Differences in drift between areas with and without ice could not account for the observed differences in mortality of juvenile salmon during the winter in these areas.  相似文献

Aim The goal of this study was to quantify levels of variation in spectral reflectance within and among populations of Dendrobates pumilio, the strawberry poison frog from the Bocas del Toro Archipelago. Location This study was carried out in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, in the Republic of Panama, Central America. Methods Spectral reflectance was measured for samples of individuals from fifteen distinct island and mainland populations, using an Ocean Optics 2000 spectrometer and a BiLink portable computer. Results Our results provide quantitative evidence for extreme polymorphism among populations, and more limited levels of polymorphism within some populations. No obvious signs of sexual dimorphism were found. All the colour morphs appear to have relatively little reflectance in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. There is some evidence for clinal variation in colour and pattern across some mainland populations. There is also at least one area where distinctly different morphs occur in sympatry, suggesting the possibility of incipient reproductive isolation. We argue that variation in coloration may have been enhanced by sexual selection.  相似文献

Complexing heparin or dermatan sulfate with the fluorescent probe acridine orange provides a means of studying electrostatic as well as static and dynamic conformational aspects of these glycosaminoglycans via the thermodynamic and photochemical (fluorescence fading) properties of these complexes. The cooperative binding constants (Kq), fluorescence fading rate parameters (r'), and anticoagulant activities of heparins fractionated according to anionic density all showed qualitatively the same dependence upon anionic density. When Kq and r' were plotted against anticoagulant activity, empirical relationships were observed. Interestingly, the corresponding values for unfractionated dermatan sulfate fell on the lines defined by the heparin fractions. Temperature-dependence, studies demonstrated that differences in fading rate observed for heparins of different anionic densities are entropic in origin and reflect differences in the ability to assume a special configuration. Differences in activation entropy for fluorescence fading can be empirically correlated with anticoagulant activity. The latter correlation suggests a physical similarity in the roles played by anionic density in both fluorescence fading and anticoagulant activity.  相似文献

A growing body of evidence suggests that ocean acidification acting synergistically with ocean warming alters carbonate biomineralization in a variety of marine biota. Magnesium often substitutes for Ca in the calcite skeletons of marine invertebrates, increasing their solubility. The spatio-environmental distribution of Mg in marine invertebrates has seldom been studied, despite its importance for assessing vulnerabilities to ocean acidification. Because pH decreases with water depth, it is predicted that levels of Mg in calcite skeletons should also decrease to counteract dissolution. Such a pattern has been suggested by evidence from echinoderms. Data on magnesium content and depth in Arctic bryozoans (52 species, 103 individuals, 150 samples) are here used to test this prediction, aided by comparison with six conceptual models explaining all possible scenarios. Analyses were based on a uniform dataset spanning more than 200 m of coastal water depth. No significant relationship was found between depth and Mg content; indeed, the highest Mg content among the analyzed taxa (8.7 % mol MgCO3) was recorded from the deepest settings (>200 m). Our findings contrast with previously published results from echinoderms in which Mg was found to decrease with depth. The bryozoan results suggest that ocean acidification may have less impact on the studied bryozoans than is generally assumed. In the broad context, our study exemplifies quantitative testing of spatial patterns of skeletal geochemistry for predicting the biological effects of environmental change in the oceans.  相似文献

Segregation analysis of 99 sibships in 2 samples from Venezuela and Japan indicates that a torus palatinus is inherited in simple dominant fashion. The gene shows variable expressivity and penetrance close to 85%, without significant heterogeneity between the populations considered. No evidence of sporadic cases has been found.  相似文献

Homocysteine is an amino acid that has been strongly associated with vascular disease. Plasma homocysteine concentrations are known to vary with dietary patterns and to decrease with exogenous estrogen use, but no other behavioral factors have been examined as potential modifiers of this risk factor. Because psychological stress has also been implicated in the development of cardiovascular disease, the purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that acute psychological stress induces elevations in plasma homocysteine concentrations. A secondary aim was to test potential differences in response between premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Thirty-four healthy women, one-half of whom were naturally postmenopausal with no hormone replacement, participated in this study. The psychological stressors included standard mental arithmetic and speech stressors. Blood samples were taken prior to, during, and after the stressors, and heart rate and blood pressure were also monitored. Results indicated significant elevations in plasma homocysteine during acute psychological stress, with a return to baseline concentrations during recovery. The pattern of findings for blood pressure and heart rate was similar, suggesting that the rise in homocysteine concentrations may have been sympathetically-mediated. No effects of menopausal status or endogenous estrogens were found. The findings provide preliminary evidence that plasma homocysteine may be an important factor in the relationship between psychological stress and risk for heart disease.  相似文献

A genetic locus associated with familial Alzheimer disease (FAD) and a candidate gene, APP, encoding the amyloid protein precursor have both been assigned previously to chromosome 21, and, in a few FAD families, mutations of APP have been detected. However, obligate crossovers between APP and FAD have also been reported in several FAD pedigrees, including FAD4, a large kindred showing highly suggestive evidence for linkage of the disorder to chromosome 21. In case the apparent APP crossover in FAD4 actually represented an intragenic recombination event or segregation of different mutations in different family branches, we have performed a more detailed assessment of APP as a candidate gene in this family. The entire coding region of the APP gene was sequenced for FAD4 and for FAD1, a second large kindred. No mutations were found, indicating that, in at least one chromosome 21-linked FAD pedigree, the gene defect is not accounted for by a mutation in the known coding region of the APP gene. A total of 25 well-characterized early- and late-onset FAD pedigrees were typed for genetic linkage to APP, to assess the percentage of FAD families predicted to carry mutations in the APP gene. None of the FAD families yielded positive lod scores at a recombination fraction of 0.0. To estimate the overall prevalence of FAD-associated mutations in the beta A4 domain of APP, we sequenced exons 16 and 17 in 30 (20 early- and 10 late-onset) FAD kindreds and in 11 sporadic AD cases, and we screened 56 FAD kindreds and 81 cases of sporadic AD for the presence of the originally reported FAD-associated mutation, APP717 Val----Ile (by BclI digestion). No APP gene mutations were found in any of the FAD families or sporadic-AD samples examined in this study, suggesting that the mutations in exons 16 and 17 are a rare cause of FAD. Overall, these data suggest that APP gene mutations account for a very small portion of FAD.  相似文献

Forty-seven microsatellite loci were amplified in Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila simulans, Drosophila mauritiana and Drosophila sechellia. The two cosmopolitan species D. melanogaster and D. simulans were found to be the most variable ones, followed by D. mauritiana and D. sechellia. A model based clustering algorithm was applied to the population samples of D. melanogaster, D. simulans and D. sechellia. No evidence for population substructure was detected within species--most likely due to insufficient power. A Markov chain Monte Carlo method developed for demographic inference based on microsatellites provided unambiguous evidence for population contraction in D. melanogaster, D. simulans and D. sechellia, despite that the D. melanogaster and D. simulans population samples were of non-African origin and represented recently expanded populations.  相似文献
