We assessed levels of genetic diversity and investigated patterns of population structure in three remnant populations of
the endangered giant otter, Pteronura brasiliensis, using microsatellite loci. All populations displayed moderate to low levels of heterozygosity and allelic richness (H
O
0.56–0.57, A
R
4.00–5.15) and effective population sizes were low (N
E
10.8–54) although only the Iténez population exhibited the signature of a genetic bottleneck. Population structure analyses
revealed a pattern in which the populations of the Upper Amazon, Orinoco and Essequibo drainages comprised partially differentiated
segments of a northern South American metapopulation, whereas the population of the Iténez appeared isolated. The observed
patterns are congruent with previous mitochondrial DNA analysis which suggested the Iténez and northern South American groups
constitute two evolutionary significant units. The results presented here should be considered in planning future policies
aiming to manage the recovery of the giant otter across its range. 相似文献

The giant otter, Pteronura brasiliensis, occupies a range including the major drainage basins of South America, yet the degree of structure that exists within and among populations inhabiting these drainages is unknown. We sequenced portions of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome b (612bp) and control region (383 bp) genes in order to determine patterns of genetic variation within the species. We found high levels of mtDNA haplotype diversity (h = 0.93 overall) and support for subdivision into four distinct groups of populations, representing important centers of genetic diversity and useful units for prioritizing conservation within the giant otter. We tested these results against the predictions of three hypotheses of Amazonian diversification (Pleistocene Refugia, Paleogeography, and Hydrogeology). While the phylogeographic pattern conformed to the predictions of the Refugia Hypothesis, molecular dating using a relaxed clock revealed the phylogroups diverged from one another between 1.69 and 0.84 Ma, ruling out the influence of Late Pleistocene glacial refugia. However, the role of Plio-Pleistocene climate change could not be rejected. While the molecular dating also makes the influence of geological arches according to the Paleogeography Hypothesis extremely unlikely, the recent Pliocene formation of the Fitzcarrald Arch and its effect of subsequently altering drainage pattern could not be rejected. The data presented here support the interactions of both climatic and hydrological changes resulting from geological activity in the Plio-Pleistocene, in shaping the phylogeographic structure of the giant otter. 相似文献

The hemoglobin of the Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis, Carnivora) contains only one component. The complete primary structures of the alpha- and beta-chains are presented. The globin chains were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and the sequences determined by automatic liquid- and gas-phase Edman degradation of the chains and their tryptic peptides. The alpha-chains show 18 and the beta-chains 12 exchanges compared with human alpha- and beta-chains, respectively. In the alpha-chains, two substitutions involve alpha 1/beta 1-contacts and one a heme-contact. In the beta-chains one alpha 1/beta 1-, one alpha 1/beta 2- and one heme-contact are exchanged. The alpha- and beta-chains of the Giant Otter are compared to those of the Common Otter and other Carnivora hemoglobins. 相似文献

In financially and human capacity poor countries, there is an important need to monitor the status of resource rich ecosystems
in the face of growing extractive activities in simple and inexpensive ways. In this study we explore the potential of using
birds as indicators of ecosystem change in the wetland systems of the North Rupununi, Guyana, where local communities rely
heavily on wetland resources for their subsistence activities. This is done by (1) assessing what environmental factors determine
bird communities at different spatial and temporal scales; and (2) identifying indicator groups and/or species for ecosystem
status. We surveyed 31 wetland sites over 2 years, taking monthly recordings of both the environmental features of waterbodies
using a modified version of the River Habitat Survey and bird species counts. Using multivariate analyses, we found that large-scale
habitat type, namely forest and savanna, and waterbody type, namely pond or main river channel, were the main factors affecting
bird species distribution. At the smaller scale, habitat features around the waterbody and seasonality become important factors.
We were able to identify lists of bird species associated with different waterbody types, and we present this as a checklist
for future monitoring. We hope these findings can be integrated into the adaptive management and sustainable livelihood goals
of the local stakeholders through linking monitoring with tourism and local school curriculum activities. 相似文献

The cichlid fishes of Guyana, South America, with notes on their ecology and breeding behaviour 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Field studies in Guyana, north-eastern South America, from 1957 to 1962 included observations on the ecology and behaviour of cichlids in natural waters. Collections made were examined at the British Museum (Natural History) together with other cichlid material from Guyana. This paper records these observations and gives keys for the field indentification of these cichlids. Fifteen genera comprising at least 35 species occur in Guyana, mostly species with a wide distribution in tropical South America. In the predatory Cichla ocellaris which grows larger than other South American cichlids, growth continues long after the fish matures. Males tend to be larger than associated females. The behaviour of Cichla ocellaris and Cichlasoma festivum when guarding their young suggests that the caudal ocellus has a vital role in the orientation of young to parent. Most of these cichlids in which breeding habits are known are substratum-spawners. An attachment gland, producing viscous threads, was found on the heads of recently hatched Geophagus jurupari young, although this species carries the young in the mouth. 相似文献

From 1995 to 1999, two species of endemic Hawaiian thrushes, `Oma`o (Myadestes obscurus) and Puaiohi (M. palmeri), were captive‐reared and re‐introduced into their historic range in Hawai`i by The Peregrine Fund, in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey–Biological Resources Division (BRD) and the Hawai`i State Department of Land and Natural Resources. This paper describes the management techniques that were developed (collection of wild eggs, artificial incubation, hand‐rearing, captive propagation, and release) with the non‐endangered surrogate species, the `Oma`o; techniques that are now being used for recovery of the endangered Puaiohi. In 1995 and 1996, 29 viable `Oma`o eggs were collected from the wild. Of 27 chicks hatched, 25 were hand‐reared and released into Pu`u Wa`awa`a Wildlife Reserve. Using the techniques developed for the `Oma`o, a captive propagation and release program was initiated in 1996 to aid the recovery of the endangered Puaiohi. Fifteen viable Puaiohi eggs were collected from the wild (1996–1997) to establish a captive breeding flock to produce birds for re‐introduction. These Puaiohi reproduced for the first time in captivity in 1998 (total Puaiohi chicks reared in captivity 1996–1998 = 41). In 1999, 14 captive‐bred Puaiohi were re‐introduced into the Alaka`i Swamp, Kaua`i. These captive‐bred birds reproduced and fledged seven chicks in the wild after release. This is the first endangered passerine recovery program using this broad spectrum of management techniques (collection of wild eggs, artificial incubation, hand‐rearing, captive‐breeding, and release) in which re‐introduced birds survived and bred in the wild. Long‐term population monitoring will be published separately [BRD, in preparation]. Zoo Biol 19:263–277, 2000. © 2000 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

This study sought to assess the potential effects of hand‐rearing by evaluating the relationships among rearing type and reproductive success in the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Species Survival Plan® for western lowland gorillas. Our study included data on 697 gorillas: 257 wild‐born (WB) and 440 born at zoos or related facilities in North America. We found no significant differences in the number of reproductive zoo‐born (ZB) and WB females, but more WB males sired infants than their ZB counterparts. This was influenced by a skew in the number of reproductive years for WB males in the studbook. ZB males showed no difference in infants produced per reproductive year, as compared to WB males, while ZB females produced more infants per reproductive year than did WB females. Mother‐reared (MR), ZB females produced more offspring and used more reproductive opportunity than hand‐reared (HR) females, whereas rearing had no effect on the reproductive success of ZB males. Moreover, MR and partially hand‐reared (PHR) females were more likely to become nurturing mothers themselves. Zoo Biol 21:389–401, 2002. © 2002 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The growth of most mensural characters of Krobia guianensis and Crenicichla saxatilis during early development was explained by a split regression indicating inflection in allometry at specific standard lengths. Double-centred PCA revealed morphological transformations during ontogeny mostly under the influence of the maximum body depth and the maximum caudal peduncle width, the area of the caudal fin and the horizontal diameter of the eye contributing also, but to a lesser extent. Young K. guianensis switched to larger prey at the end of the period when the growth of most of their studied mensural characters demonstrated an inflection, but young C. saxatilis changed their diet at a much smaller size than that at which an inflection occurred. However, in the lower reservoir sites, most young juveniles of K. guianensis and C. saxatilis did not switch to larger items during their ontogeny and micro-crustaceans occurred more frequently in their diet. It is hypothesized that the low net energy gained when eating such small prey may explain why the young of both species were thinner at these sites than in their undisturbed habitats. If food resources of young cichlids do not improve in the Petit-Saut reservoir, it is hypothesized that these species will develop stunted populations there. 相似文献

Urinary bladder imaging is critical to diagnose urinary tract disorders, and bladder cancer. There is a great need for safe, non‐invasive, and sensitive imaging technique which enables bladder imaging. Photoacoustic imaging is a rapidly growing imaging technique for various biological applications. It can be combined with clinical ultrasound imaging system for hand‐held, dual modal ultrasound‐photoacoustic real‐time imaging. Structural (bladder wall) and functional (accretion of nanoparticles) bladder imaging is shown here with combined ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging in rats. Photoacoustic images of bladder wall is shown using black ink as the contrast agent. Chicken tissues were stacked on the abdomen of the animal to demonstrate the feasibility of photoacoustic imaging till a depth of 2 cm. Also, the feasibility of photoacoustic imaging for a common bladder disorder, vesicoureteral reflux is studied using urinary tract mimicking phantom. It is also shown that a clinical ultrasound system can be used for photoacoustic imaging of non‐invasive clearance study of gold nanorods from circulation by monitoring the gradual accumulation of the gold nanorods in the bladder. The time taken for accumulation of nanorods in the bladder can be used as an indicator of the clearance rate of the nanoparticle circulation from the body. 相似文献

The giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) is a coral fish with high commercial value in Southeast Asia. In the present study, we isolated 11 microsatellite DNA markers, and analysed the genetic diversity and differentiation between cultured stocks and wild populations of the giant grouper originating from the South China Sea. A total of 390 alleles at 11 microsatellite loci were detected in 130 individuals from five different populations. The expected heterozygosity varied from 0.131 to 0.855 with a mean value of 0.623 and the observed heterozygosity varied from 0.145 to 0.869 with a mean value of 0.379. The allelic richness and heterozygosity studies revealed that the genetic diversity of the cultured population was significantly reduced when compared with that of the wild population. The Fis, pairwise Fst values, analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), three-dimensional factorial correspondence analysis and structure analysis revealed significant population differentiation between the cultured stocks and the wild populations, among the three cultured populations and between the two wild populations. These differences may be caused by random genetic drift, the effects of artificial selection and founder effects. Our results will be useful in the management of cultured stocks and conservation of wild populations of the giant grouper. 相似文献
