Symptoms of circular leaf spot of persimmon (CLSP), caused by Mycosphaerella nawae, consisted of necrotic spots on leaves, chlorosis and premature defoliation. Although CLSP is a foliar disease, early fruit maturation and abscission are frequently associated with the presence of lesions on leaves and defoliation, resulting in severe economic losses. Despite their importance for the design of efficient disease management programmes, quantitative relationships between CLSP incidence and yield loss are unknown. Therefore, fungicide efficacy trials were conducted during two consecutive years in Spain to induce different levels of disease severity, defoliation and yield loss. The effects of fungicide treatments on CLSP severity were analysed by ordinal logistic regression models. Relative yield loss values were regressed against the percentage of affected leaves or defoliated obtained at different evaluation dates. The disease had high negative impact and complete yield loss was observed in the absence of effective fungicide treatments. Preventive applications of pyraclostrobin, trifloxy‐strobin and mancozeb provided the best disease control and highest yields, up to 95.77 kg tree?1. An exponential relationship of CLSP incidence and defoliation with yield loss was found. In general, model fit and predictive ability was superior when defoliation, rather than incidence, was used as explanatory variable. The impact of defoliation on yield loss was higher in earliest evaluation dates, suggesting that early leaf abscission may be the main factor contributing to premature fruit drop and subsequent yield loss. Substantial yield losses were observed even with relatively low levels of CLSP incidence and defoliation. Therefore, it was not possible to define a critical action threshold for CLSP management based on foliar symptoms.  相似文献

A model of the effect of foliar-applied fungicides on disease-induced yield loss is described, parameterised and tested. The effects of fungicides on epidemics of Septoria tritici (leaf blotch), Puccinia striiformis (yellow rust), Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici (powdery mildew) and Puccinia triticina (brown rust) on winter wheat were simulated using dose–response curve parameters. Where two or more active substances were applied together, their joint action was estimated using an additive dose model where the active substances had the same mode of action or a multiplicative survival model where the modes of action differed. By coupling the model with models of wheat canopy growth and foliar disease published previously, it was possible to estimate disease-induced yield loss for a prescribed fungicide programme. The difference in green canopy area and, hence, interception of photosynthetically active radiation between simulated undiseased and diseased (but treated) crop canopies was used to estimate yield loss. The model was tested against data from field experiments across a range of sites, seasons and wheat cultivars and was shown to predict the observed disease-induced yield loss with sufficient accuracy to support fungicide treatment decisions. A simple method of accounting for uncertainty in the predictions of yield loss is described. Fungicide product, dose and spray timing combinations selected using the coupled models responded appropriately to disease pressure and cultivar disease resistance.  相似文献

Comparisons of epidemics of light leafspot of differing duration and time of initiation were made in two experiments using a single cultivar of Brassica napus. Fungicide was applied before introduction of disease to prevent infection or some time after inoculation to stop further disease development. In the first experiment, substantial reductions in green leaf area and total plant dry-matter were found at flowering when disease was introduced in the autumn or in January. Plant dry weight at maturity was also greatly reduced in these treatments. The detrimental effect of an epidemic initiated in the autumn was avoided to a large extent if fungicide application began in February. Epidemics initiated in March had only small effects on final dry-matter yield. Seed yield was negatively correlated with the length of the epidemic. In a second experiment, early epidemics initiated in the autumn were halted after different time intervals. Commencing fungicide application even as early as December failed to prevent some loss of dry weight at flowering. At maturity, however, dry weight and seed yield were reduced significantly when fungicide application was delayed until February. Failure to control the disease resulted in a 46% loss of seed yield.  相似文献

Two methods were used to investigate the loss in grain yield associated with specific levels of leaf blotch. Yields from plots sprayed with fungicide were compared with those from unsprayed plots and yields of varieties of different susceptibility to the disease were compared with one another. A disease assessment key is presented, which was used to assess the percentage laminar area of the top two leaves affected by the disease. A linear relationship between disease on the upper two leaves and yield was established. Results from nine trials showed a consistent relationship between the disease level, at growth stage 11·1 (Feekes scale), and loss in yield. The loss in yield expressed as a percentage of the yield of an uninfected crop was equivalent to approximately two-thirds of the percentage of the flag-leaf area visibly infected, or one-half of the infected area on the second leaf. The predicted loss in yield is the average of these two estimates.  相似文献

Surveys and field experiments showed pasmo to be the most serious disease affecting UK winter linseed in the 1997–98, 1998–99 and 1999–2000 growing seasons. Survey data indicated that pasmo was widespread in England and Scotland, causing extensive loss of leaves and stem and capsule symptoms, on both winter and spring linseed crops. In winter linseed experiments at ADAS Boxworth and Rothamsted, when severe epidemics occurred (1997–98 and 1999–2000), control of pasmo with one or two MBC fungicide sprays increased yield. In experiments when severe pasmo epidemics did not occur (1998–99), fungicide applications did not increase yield. In all three growing seasons, large numbers of air-borne Mycosphaerella linicola ascospores were collected in the summer months. At the time when the winter linseed crop was emerging and becoming established in October/November, there were more air-borne M. linicola ascospores in 1999 than in 1998. April/May rainfall was much greater in 1998 (135 mm) and 2000 (223 mm), when severe pasmo epidemics developed by July, than in 1999 (68 mm) when disease severity in July was less. Regression analyses suggested that yield decreased as percentage area affected by pasmo on leaves or stems in July increased. The formulae relating yield loss to pasmo severity, derived from these experiments, were combined with disease survey data to estimate, retrospectively, the UK national losses from pasmo. Estimated national losses from pasmo on winter linseed, although >50% of crops were sprayed with fungicide, were approximately £2.9M in 1998, £1.6M in 1999 and £0.37M in 2000 (when the area of winter linseed had decreased greatly). Estimated combined losses on winter and spring linseed were approximately £14.8M in 1998, £34.9M in 1999 and £11.0M in 2000.  相似文献

The ability to identify diseases in an early infection stage and to accurately quantify the severity of infection is crucial in plant disease assessment and management. A greenhouse study was conducted to assess changes in leaf spectral reflectance of wheat plants during infection by powdery mildew and take-all disease to evaluate leaf reflectance measurements as a tool to identify and quantify disease severity and to discriminate between different diseases. Wheat plants were inoculated under controlled conditions in different intensities either with powdery mildew or take-all. Leaf reflectance was measured with a digital imager (Leica S1 Pro, Leica, Germany) under controlled light conditions in various wavelength ranges covering the visible and the near-infrared spectra (380–1300 nm). Leaf scans were evaluated by means of L*a*b*-color system. Visual estimates of disease severity were made for each of the epidemics daily from the onset of visible symptoms to maximum disease severity. Reflectance within the ranges of 490780 nm (r2 = 0.69), 510780nm (r2 = 0.74), 5161300nm (r2 = 0.62) and 5401300 nm (r2 = 0.60) exhibited the strongest relationship with infection levels of both powdery mildew and take-all disease. Among the evaluated spectra the range of 490780nm showed most sensitive response to damage caused by powdery mildew and take-all infestation. The results of this study indicated that disease detection and discrimination by means of reflectance measurements may be realized by the use of specific wavelength ranges. Further studies have to be carried out, to discriminate powdery mildew and take-all infection from other plant stress factors in order to develop suitable decision support systems for site-specific fungicide application.  相似文献

Control of rape diseases II. Measures for disease reduction caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum with consideration to economical aspects The most widely distributed diseases of rape in the Federal Republic of Germany are Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (white stalk disease, formerly called rape canker) and Phoma lingam (root collar and stalk rot), and these can cause considerable yield losses. S. sclerotiorum occurs sporadically and is more prevalent in the marsh land of northwest Germany than in the hilly landscape of Schleswig-Holstein, where pockets of infection are found. Application of calcium cyanamid, formerly successfully used to control apothecia formation by S. sclerotiorum, has been replaced by fungicides (Vinclozolin) directed at preventing ascospore infection. Many experiments proved to be economically unsuccessful due to the low rate of infection and the high costs involved with such treatments. With an expected yield of 30 dt/ha, an 8 % increase in yield following spraying must be achieved in order to make the fungicide treatment profitable. In fields where only up to 12% of the plants were infected, 75 % of the experiments proved to be uneconomical. By a disease index of 13–25 %, 55 % of the trials were similarly uneconomical. Only where more than 25 % of the plants were infected did the fungicide application prove to have a considerable effect on the yield. A prophylactic treatment is not to be recommended. Only in those areas where severe disease occurs nearly every year should such treatment be practiced that is unless the Advisory Service advises otherwise due to extreme weather conditions (too wet or too dry) which may lead to only very slight infection.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Crop protection strategies, based on preventing quantitative crop losses rather than pest outbreaks, are being developed as a promising way to reduce fungicide use. The Bastiaans' model was applied to winter wheat crops (Triticum aestivum) affected by leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and Septoria tritici blotch (STB; Mycosphaerella graminicola) under a range of crop management conditions. This study examined (a) whether green leaf area per layer accurately accounts for growth loss; and (b) whether from growth loss it is possible to derive yield loss accurately and simply. Methods Over 5 years of field experiments, numerous green leaf area dynamics were analysed during the post-anthesis period on wheat crops using natural aerial epidemics of leaf rust and STB. Key Results When radiation use efficiency (RUE) was derived from bulk green leaf area index (GLAI), RUE(bulk) was hardly accurate and exhibited large variations among diseased wheat crops, thus extending outside the biological range. In contrast, when RUE was derived from GLAI loss per layer, RUE(layer) was a more accurate calculation and fell within the biological range. In one situation out of 13, no significant shift in the RUE(layer) of diseased crops vs. healthy crops was observed. A single linear relationship linked yield to post-anthesis accumulated growth for all treatments. Its slope, not different from 1, suggests that the allocation of post-anthesis photosynthates to grains was not affected by the late occurring diseases under study. The mobilization of pre-anthesis reserves completely accounted for the intercept value. Conclusions The results strongly suggest that a simple model based on green leaf area per layer and pre-anthesis reserves can predict both growth and yield of wheat suffering from late epidemics of foliar diseases over a range of crop practices. It could help in better understanding how crop structure and reserve management contribute to tolerance of wheat genotypes to leaf diseases.

The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, is considered one of the most significant insect pests of maize in North America. Larvae of other secondary subterranean pests such as grape colaspis, Colaspis brunnea (F.), and Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman, can also injure maize seedlings and cause yield loss. In the past decade, maize hybrids containing Bt proteins have been used to manage the western corn rootworm; additionally, seeds are commonly treated with a neonicotinoid and fungicide combination to control secondary pests. Recently, soil‐applied insecticides have been used in conjunction with rootworm Bt hybrids (and seed‐applied insecticides) in areas with perceived risk for increased rootworm larval or secondary pest damage. We conducted a series of trials from 2009 to 2011 that examined multiple rootworm Bt hybrids and their near‐isolines, along with two soil‐applied insecticides, to determine whether the Bt plus insecticide combination resulted in an increased level of efficacy or yield. We also sampled for Japanese beetle and grape colaspis larvae to determine their potential for reducing yield. Densities of secondary pests in our trials were low and likely had no effect on maize yield. The addition of a soil‐applied insecticide to rootworm Bt hybrids improved efficacy only once across 17 location‐years, when overall corn rootworm injury was highest; an improvement in yield was never observed. Our results suggest that the use of a soil‐applied insecticide with a rootworm Bt hybrid should only be considered in scenarios with potentially significant rootworm larval populations. However, potential negative consequences related to trait durability when soil insecticides are used with rootworm Bt maize should be considered.  相似文献

Stripe rust of winter bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) causes substantial grain yield loss in Central Asia. This study involved two replicated field experiments undertaken in 2009–2010 and 2010–2011 winter wheat crop seasons. The first experiment was conducted to determine grain yield reductions on susceptible winter wheat cultivars using single and two sprays of fungicide at Zadoks growth stages Z61–Z69 in two farmers’ fields in Tajikistan and one farmer's field in Uzbekistan. In the second experiment, four different fungicides at two concentrations were evaluated at Zadoks growth stage Z69. These included three products from BASF – Opus (0.5 l/ha and 1.0 l/ha), Platoon (0.5 l/ha and 1.0 l/ha) and Opera (0.75 l/ha and 1.5 l/ha) – and locally used fungicide Titul 390 (0.5 l/ha and 1.0 l/ha). One and two sprays of fungicides did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) in increasing grain yield. Stripe rust reduced grain yield and 1000‐kernel weight (TKW) from 24 to 39% and from 16 to 24%, respectively. The benefits from the two concentrations of the same fungicide did not consistently resulted in significantly higher grain yield, suggesting that the lower concentrations could be more cost effective. Our study provides important information about the selection of fungicides, spray concentrations and number of spray to control stripe rust and increase grain yield. The findings could play an important role in developing stripe rust management approaches such as fungicide rotation and strategic fungicide applications in Central Asian countries.  相似文献

Leaf size and foliar disease in winter barley increased with increasing total amounts of nitrogen applied to the crop: flag leaf areas increased at an average of 10% per 35 kg N ha-1 Nitrogen top dressing applied in mid-March (G.S. 31) resulted in larger leaves, more foliar disease, more straw, delayed ear emergence, fewer grains ear-1 and less grain yield than nitrogen applied in mid-April (G.S. 31). Application of chlormequat at G.S. 30 gave a variable response, but overall it increased fertile stems m-2 and crop yield and decreased crop height but had no significant effect on straw yield. Fungicide treatments suppressed foliar disease and improved yield. Yield responses were greater when plant growth regulator and mid-March nitrogen had been applied at sites where more disease prevailed than with April-applied nitrogen. In one of the field experiments, on cv. Sonja, delaying the main nitrogen application until April, without fungicide treatment, gave a similar yield to that provided by nitrogen in March with two or three fungicide sprays.  相似文献

Six rice cultivars were shown to have measurable levels of rate-limiting resistance (RLR) to blast disease in the seedling stage in the greenhouse, as compared to a susceptible cultivar. The criteria for RLR were: a consistent ability to reduce receptivity, sporulation capacity and an extension of the latent period. Another method for a quantitative evaluation of the RLR to blast disease was developed. This procedure used sub-lethal concentrations of the systemic fungicide Tricyclazole. It was found, that a certain threshhold (225–525 μg a.i./ml) of fungicide concentration could be used to determine different levels of RLR and that the minimum concentration of the fungicide needed for complete inhibition of the disease in a given cultivar is related to the level of its RLR.  相似文献

Three fungicide rates, 4·48, 2.24, and 1.12 kg peT ha,and four spray intervals, 5, 7, 10, and14-day intervals, were investigated for the control of Phytophthoraleaf blight of taro in a subtropical field environment in Hawaii. The fungicide rate was studied in two separate locations onthe windward sides of the island of Kauai. The fungicide utilizedin these experiments was a co-ordination product of zinc ionand manganese ethylene bisdithiocarbamate (Dithane M-45, 80per cent WP). In the lower rainfall location, there was no differencedue to different fungicide rates while in the wetter location, the 4·48 kg per ha rate gave better control than the1·12 kg per ha rate. There was no significant differencebetween the 5, 7, and IO-day spray intervals butwhen compared with the 14-day interval, the 5-day interval wassuperior. Periods of increased rainfall were reflected in thefollowing week by increased lesion counts. Present data indicatethat rainfall is a major factor to consider as a basis for predictingdisease was occurrences and may be utilized for planning intervalof fungicide application. The amount of disease was a functionof initial disease levels, rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, fungicide rate, and spray interval between fungicide applications.Applications of fungicide at weekly intervals when weekly rainfallaccumulation exceeded 1 cm per week and/or when lesion countsexceeded more than one per plant gave substantial disease control. Thus, once these parameters of disease have been established, fungicide application could be governed conveniently by monitoringrainfall and disease incidence to achieve practical Phytophthowraleaf blight control. The 2·24 and 4·48 kg ha-1rates gave significant yield increases over the 1·12and check (no fungicide) treatments where Phytophthora leafblight occurred in epidemic proportions.  相似文献

Skin color is a polygenically determined quantitative trait. Although it has been used extensively in studies of between-population variation, there have been relatively few studies of the inheritance of skin color. In this article we use measurements on 359 members of the Jirel population of eastern Nepal to assess the heritabilities and additive genetic correlations of three skin reflectance measures. Skin color was measured at the upper inner arm site at three wavelengths. A maximum likelihood approach was used to estimate sex and age effects on skin reflectance, heritabilities, and phenotypic variances at each wavelength and both additive genetic and environmental correlations between wavelengths. This technique incorporated information from 36 pedigrees with 2-25 members and 173 independent individuals. Likelihood ratio tests were used to assess the significance of specific variance/covariance components. The results indicate that skin reflectances are moderately heritable at all three wavelengths. The pairwise phenotypic correlations ranged from 0.76 to 0.88. The observed additive genetic correlations were not significantly different from 1.00, suggesting that the same loci influence variation at each wavelength. This evidence for relatively complete pleiotropy implies that measurements at multiple wavelengths yield little additional genetic information, although they may be useful for reducing measurement error. Based on estimates of the genetic and phenotypic covariance matrices, we determined that skin reflectance measurements are expected to provide only as much information for assessing local between-population genetic variation as a single two-allele polymorphic marker. Therefore microevolutionary studies based on skin color variation should be viewed with caution.  相似文献

Some sixty fungicides were tested in the laboratory for ability to ( a ) depress sporulation of Colletotrichum coffeanum on the maturing bark of coffee shoots and ( b ) inhibit spore germination. On the basis of these tests over twenty products were selected for testing in the field during 1968-70. Nine of these (50 % copper formulations, Ortho-Difolatan, Daconil, Benlate, Topsin, Top-sin M, Tecto 60, Delan and Du-Ter) could be recommended for control of coffee berry disease (CBD) in Kenya.
Field evaluation of fungicides is complicated by multiple flowering which creates a succession of overlapping crops, and by high variability in cropping potential which is often aggravated by normal pruning practices; in some circumstances other diseases and pests may also be a complicating factor. As a result, yield, which should be the most sensitive measure of CBD control, is at times even less satisfactory than disease estimates based on a small sample of the developing crop. Disease incidence in the ripe crop, which is easy to measure, is unfortunately not always well correlated with disease and crop loss earlier in the season. Consequently, critical assessment of fungicide performance requires estimates of both disease progress and crop loss.
Consideration of fungicide performance indicates that physical characteristics, particularly persistence and capacity for redistribution, are especially important for effective control of CBD.  相似文献

Shell spectral reflectance, activity and weight loss in the land snail Cepaea nemoralis were examined to test whether solar radiation has different effects on the behavioural and physiological responses of different morphs. A uniform area from the empty shells of different morphs was cut and a spectrophotometer was used to measure the spectral reflectance at wavelengths from 220 nm to 800 nm. Snails were put into cages made of mesh hardware cloth, and their activities were observed from dawn onwards on two hot, dry days. Weight loss of snails under shade and under direct sunlight was also measured.
The results show that unbanded morphs reflect more light than five-banded ones, but the yellow morphs reflect only a little more than pink morphs. Five-banded morphs became inactive more quickly than unbanded ones from dawn onwards, but the differences in activity patterns were not significant between pink and yellow morphs. There are significant differences in percent weight loss between snails placed under direct sunlight and under shade. The weight loss of different morphs under shade was not statistically different. But when exposed to sunlight, five-banded morphs lost more weight than pink and yellow unbanded morphs.
Because of their lower reflectance of solar radiation, the five-banded morphs are, in a hot, arid climate, at a selective disadvantage compared to unbanded morphs. However, they can avoid such selective disadvantage by actively seeking a shaded area, as all other morphs do in the field. Such behavioural habitat selection could help the maintenance of genetic polymorphisms in natural populations.  相似文献

An organic treatment for control of crown rot disease of banana was developed and evaluated at EARTH University in Costa Rica. Studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Biocto 6 (seed extract from citrus) in combination with the wax-based adjuvant Verdiol for control of post-harvest crown rot of banana. The standard commercial fungicide treatment (thiabendazol, imazalil and ammonium sulfate) and an untreated control were included for comparison. Bananas with the various treatments were processed using standard commercial procedures and stored in a refrigerated chamber that was modified to simulate commercial transport, distribution and controlled ripening for exported bananas. Fruit clusters were evaluated for percent weight loss, ripening in storage and crown rot disease severity. At the end of the 28-day storage period, there were no significant differences in percent weight loss between any of the treatments. There was no significant difference in ripening (maturity level) between the organic treatment and the commercial fungicide standard in 2 years of testing. In 2003, the untreated control had a significantly higher maturity rating than the organic or standard fungicide treatment. However, there were no significant differences in any of the treatments in maturity level in 2005. There was no significant difference between the organic and standard fungicide treatment for crown rot control and both treatments had significantly less crown rot than the untreated control. Results indicate that Biocto 6 in combination with Verdiol wax provides a new organic alternative for control of post-harvest crown rot of banana.  相似文献

Eight maize hybrids were tested for resistance to eyespot (Kabatiella zeae) and stalk rot (Fusarium spp.) under field conditions in 1993–1995. The relationship between eyespot and stalk rot and their effect on grain yield of hybrids were studied. Effectiveness of the prochloraz fungicide in controlling both diseases was evaluated. The experiments were performed in three subtrials where plants were naturally infected, inoculated with K. zeae or treated with the fungicide, Sportak 450 EC. The relationship between intensity of leaf damage by eyespot and incidence of stalk rot has been evidently confirmed. High infection of leaf by K. zeae reduced grain yield of hybrids. However, considerable differences in prevalence of disease and yield losses were noted in successive years. The intensity of eyespot depended upon environmental conditions highly variable over the years: it was enhanced by low temperature and high air humidity in July and August. Hybrids showed significant differences in susceptibility to both diseases. Mona – hybrid from the USA and two experimental hybrids from Poland were less affected by diseases than Smolimag and Hidosil (commercial hybrids from Poland). The fungicide Sportak was effective in controlling eyespot and had an indirect influence on decreasing fusarium stalk rot.  相似文献

Plant protection problems are simulated by a system of ordinary differential equations with given initial conditions. The sensitivity and resistance of pathogen subpopulations to fungicide mixtures, fungicide weathering, plant growth, etc. are taken into consideration. The system of equations is solved numerically for each set of initial conditions and parameters of the disease and fungicide applications. Optimization algorithms were investigated and a computer program was developed for optimization of these solutions. 14 typical cases of the disease were simulated and optimized in order to determine optimal fungicide treatments. The optimized strategy for fungicide application differs considerably from the commonly used method and seems to be an important new principle in plant protection. The approach developed in this study may be useful for a wide spectrum of purposes in the simulation of leaf diseases. It may also help the biologist to decrease or pinpoint experimental work and analyze its results and is perspective for plant disease control.  相似文献
