A human case of tick bite on the scalp was found at a local hospital on June, 1984. The patient, 63-year old female, was attacked by a tick while working in a farm forest which located in the suburbs of Seoul. The clinical complaint was a (worm) mass on the scalp which she thought as a tumor. On admission the patient complained of facial edema and general malaise. After removal of the mass (tick), small bleeding and discoloration were observed around the biting site. The tick was morphologically examined and identified as Ixodes nipponensis. This is the 4th human case of tick bite reported in the literature of Korea.  相似文献

Summary The structure of the extensible (alloscutum) and inextensible (scutum) integument of the nymph, Amblyomma variegatum was examined during the whole bloodmeal and the nymphal-adult moulting cycle. Integumental events were tentatively correlated with the ecdysteroid levels measured by radioimmunoassay. We observed that all the integumental events were realised along an anteroposterior gradient. During the 5 days corresponding to the bloodmeal, although the hormone concentration was low, a new endocuticle was deposited on both the alloscutum and scutum. Furthermore, mitoses were initiated in the capitulum. On days 1–2 after the meal, ecdysteroid titres began to increase and reached a first peak corresponding to 4.1 ng 20-hydroxyecdysone equivalents/tick on the 4th day after the ticks dropped off their host. At this time the epidermis of the capitulum was detached and the outline of the adult capitulum was already visible. Mitotic activity in the alloscutum was initiated. On day 6 post-drop, the frontal apolysis was achieved and the ecdysteroid titres declined to basal values. A second peak much higher than the first one (maximum value of 33.7 ng/tick) and identified principally as 20-hydroxyecdysone by HPLC/RIA was noted on the 13th day post-drop. During the period of increase in the ecdysteroid levels (days 9–10 post-drop), the mitotic phase ended in the alloscutum and the apolysis began. Epicuticle was deposited after day 12 postdrop. Then, while the titre fell to low values (about 1.6 ng/tick, days 16–20 post-drop), the exocuticle was deposited and the nymphal cuticle was digested. All adult structures were functional 3 days before ecdysis. In young male as in female adults the mean value of the ecdysteroid levels corresponded to about 2.5 ng/tick. Finally, hydrolysis of tick whole extracts with esterase demonstrated a low increase of RIA-positive material, demonstrating the probable presence of natural ecdysteroid fatty-acid conjugates in this species.  相似文献

The evolution of a showy floral display as an advertisement to pollinators could simultaneously advertise the availability of resources to pre-dispersal seed-predators. The hypotheses tested here are that the incidence of seed predation by bud-infesting insect larvae in capitula of Asteraceae is positively related to (1) capitulum size among species, (2) capitulum size within species, (3) capitulum lifespan, and (4) the degree of flowering asynchrony on individual plants. Three populations of each of 20 common herbaceous species of Asteraceae from disturbed ground and grassland habitats were monitored for the presence of pre-dispersal, seed-eating insect larvae. Mean capitulum size (receptacle width) of each species was measured. In a sub-set of eight species, individual capitula were tagged to determine their flowering phenology and lifespan (from anthesis to seed shedding). From these data an index of flowering synchrony on individual plants was derived. Among species, the incidence of larval infestation increased with capitulum size. Small-flowered species such as Achillea millefolium were largely free of bud-infesting larvae, whilst large-flowered species such as Arctium minus were heavily infested. In three cases investigated in greater detail, bud infestation was found to increase with capitulum size within species, suggesting a potential for natural selection to favour smaller capitula. No relationship was found between infestation levels and either capitulum lifespan or degree of flowering synchrony, and there was no evidence that the relationship between capitulum size and infestation was confounded by correlations with these other features. The results support hypotheses 1 and 2, but not 3 and 4. It is suggested that the characteristic capitulum size of each species may represent a trade-off between the opposing selection pressures of pollinators and pre-dispersal seed predators.  相似文献

The soft tick Ornithodoros peruvianus Kohls, Clifford & Jones, 1969 was described as a parasite of bats in Peru upon the examination of engorged larvae only. Recently, larvae of this tick species were reported on bats from northern Chile. However, the adult and nymphal stages of O. peruvianus have remained undescribed. This study aimed to redescribe the larva of O. peruvianus based on unfed specimens, and to describe nymphs, the male and the female of this species. Ticks were collected on the walls inside three caves in northern Chile. Two females laid eggs in the laboratory. Part of the unfed larvae was separated for morphological and morphometrical analyses, and the remaining specimens were fed upon laboratory mice in order to obtain subsequent nymphal and adult stages. The first nymphal stage (N1) moulted either to male or to a second nymphal stage (N2) without feeding. Obtained N2 moulted either to male or female after one meal. PCR amplification of tick mitochondrial 16S rRNA of specimens from the three caves revealed almost identical sequences. The unfed larva of O. peruvianus has an elongated idiosoma, and fringed setae cover the ventral surfaces of coxae, palps and tarsi. Nymph 1 has a thin integument covered by incipient mammillae and barely noticeable dorsal disks; it lacks cheeks and possesses few short setae on the basis capitulum. Nymph 2 has a pair of small cheeks and resembles adult stages in its tegumentary traits and capitulum. Adult stages exhibit developed cheeks (larger in females) without the capacity to completely cover the capitulum. Very small and low mammillae cover the surface of the dorsal idiosoma in adults. As this feature also occurs in other bat-associated soft ticks, regardless of their phylogenetic relatedness, small mammillae in bat soft ticks are suggestive of convergent evolution.

Study of morphological characters to identify the subspecies of Hyalomma marginatum immature stages is based on material collected throughout all the geographical range of the species. As it was found, the discrimination of subspecies of H. marginatum immature stages needs a complex use of structural and morphometrical characters. Only H. m. marginatum larvae and H. m. isaaci nymphs may be easily differentiated from other subspecies based on the structural (qualitative) characters. Besides, morphometric (quantitative) characters should be used only in combinations for identification of the subspecies. In regard to structural characters of larvae, it was found that the shape and size of coxal spurs of H. marginatum allow differentiating this subspecies from the others (Fig. 3, 5, 6). Based on morphometrical characters of larvae, the following characteristic features of subspecies have been found: in H. m. marginatum, the capitulum is wide, the palpi, hypostome and genua I are short and narrow; in H. m. turanicum, the capitulum is narrow, the palpi are short and narrow, the hypostome is short and wide, the genua I are long and narrow; in H. m. rufipes, the scutum is large, the capitulum is wide, the palpi are long and narrow, the hypostome and genua I are long and wide; in H. m. isaaci, the scutum is small, the capitulum is narrow, the palpi and hypostome are long and narrow, the genua I are short and narrow. Among structural characters of nymph, several discriminative features of subspecies have been found. The shape of the scutum in H. m. isaaci (Fig. 2, 2) clearly differentiates this subspecies from the others (Fig. 2, 1). In H. m. marginatum, the setae of alloscutum as a rule have bluntly rounded apices (Fig. 1, 2), while in the other subspecies these setae are more tapering apically (Fig. 1, 1). The shape of spiracular plates is rather variable within the species, but in H. m. marginatum and H. m. isaaci (Fig. 1, 3) the plates are larger and more perforated than in H. m. rufipes and H. m. turanicum (Fig. 1, 4). In H. m. isaaci, the spurs of coxae I are narrower than in other subspecies (Fig. 1, 8). Based on morphometrical characters of nymphs, the following discriminative features of subspecies have been found: in H. m. marginatum, the capitulum is wide, the palpi are short and wide; in H. m. turanicum, the capitulum is narrow, the palpi are long and narrow; in H. m. rufipes, the scutum is wide, the capitulum is narrow, the palpi are long and narrow, the hypostome is long; in H. m. isaaci, the scutum is long and narrow, the capitulum is wide, the palpi are short and wide, the hypostome is short.  相似文献

Morphological characters of immature stages of three closely related tick species, Hyalomma asiaticum Schulze et Schlottke, 1929, H. dromedarii Koch, 1844 and H. schulzei Olenev, 1931, collected mainly in areas of their sympatry (Fig. 1) were investigated. The larvae and nymphs of these three species were collected in Egypt, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Tadjikistan: 159 larvae and 137 nymphs of H. asiaticum from 12 localities; 78 larvae and 167 nymphs of H. dromedarii from 5 localities; 30 larvae and 6 nymphs of H. schulzei from one locality. Both qualitative morphological features and measured character (in mkm) were used to discriminate these species. Main discriminant characters for larvae. H. asiaticum (Fig. 3). Scutum: length < 246, width < 389; base of capitulum: width < 158, dorsally hexagonal, apices of lateral projections directed forward; palpae (II and III segments): length < 106, width < 42; hypostome: length < 87, width < 25; the spur of coxa I small, equilateral triangular; patella: length < 154. H. dromedarii (Fig. 4). Scutum: length > 236, width > 379; base of capitulum: width > 158, dorsally almost triangular, apices of lateral projections directed laterally or backward; palpae: length > 110, width < 46; hypostome: length > 87, width < 26; the spur of coxa I large, isosceles triangular; patella: length > 115. H. schulzei (Fig. 5). Scutum: length > 249, width > 407; base of capitulum: width > 162, dorsally hexagonal, apices of lateral projections directed forward; palpae: length > 114, width > 44; hypostome: length > 89, width > 28; the spur of coxa I large, isosceles triangular; patella: length > 164. Main discriminant characters for nymphs: H. asiaticum (Fig. 3). Scutum: small, width < 650, length and width subequal, posterior margin widely rounded, lateral incisions weakly developed; spiracular plates with distinct, pointed dorsal projection, marginal row of perforations distant from the base of dorsal projection, submarginal row with a gap; base of capitulum: lateral projections situated in posterior half of capitulum; palpae (II segment) short and narrow; hypostome short and narrow, width < 69; pore of coxae I-III present. H. dromedarii (Fig. 4). Scutum: large, width > 650, length shorter than width, posterior margin widely rounded, lateral incisions moderately developed; spiracular plates: with distinct and wide dorsal projection, marginal row of perforations distant from the base of dorsal projection, submarginal row present, without gap; base of capitulum: lateral projections situated in the middle part of capitulum; palpae long and narrow; hypostome long and wide, width > 69; coxal pore lacking. H. schulzei (Fig. 5). 研究了海拔对青藏高原东缘不同海拔12个居群弯齿风毛菊繁殖特征的影响.结果表明: 弯齿风毛菊的个体大小、繁殖器官和营养器官生物量、每株头状花序数量及种子总数量均随海拔的升高而减小,而每个头状花序质量和种子百粒重随海拔的升高而增加,表明弯齿风毛菊可以通过减小个体大小来降低资源消耗,把获取的有限资源分配到繁殖部分以达到繁殖成功.为了保证顺利完成有性繁殖,繁殖分配随海拔升高而增大.弯齿风毛菊头状花序的数量与大小、种子数量与百粒重之间均存在资源分配上的权衡,以此来适应环境胁迫,提高自身的适合度.  相似文献

A range of seed and flower characters was examined in 37 species of the New Zealand genus Celmisia (Asteraceae) to determine whether there were any relationships between reproductive features and the geographic or altitudinal ranges of the species. Using published sources and herbarium material, flower attractiveness to pollinators was measured in terms of capitulum size and ray/disc length ratio. Dispersibility was measured in terms of seed dry weight, seed terminal velocity, pappus/seed length ratio, and scape/leaf length ratio. Altitude (minimum and maximum) and geographic ranges (number of 1o latitude x 1o longitude squares occupied) were obtained from published sources. A multivariate principal components analysis using 12 morphological characters revealed the presence of five groups of species differing in capitulum size, seed weight, pappus length, number of pappus bristles, leaf length and scape length. Linear regressions showed that altitude was significantly and negatively related to seed dry weight and capitulum size, and positively to scape/leaf length ratio. Geographic range is negatively related to capitulum size, and positively to ray/disc ratio and altitudinal range. Amongst the seed features measured, seed weight was the best predictor of terminal velocity (an inverse measure of dispersability), but lighter seeds also had a higher pappus/seed length ratio. The frequency distribution of the geographic ranges of the species is highly skewed, with many local species (86% occurring in 15 or fewer one‐degree squares) and very few common ones. Two species (C. gracilenta and C. graminifolia) are notably more common than all the others. A comparison of these species with the others shows that, on average, they have lighter seeds with more bristles, taller scapes and higher ray/disc ratios, but have smaller capitula. The low geographic abundance of the rare species could not readily be attributed to any specific reproductive feature, possibly because of the multiple types of rarity represented within the genus.  相似文献

We report the case of a 70-year-old man with a 1 year history of relapsing folliculitis of the scalp. Bacteriological, mycological and the Tzanck tests from the lesions were negative. Histopathological study showed suppurative perifollicular flogosis. Virological cultures were negative, while HSV nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) assays made on swabs and histological sections from the scalp lesions demonstrated the presence of herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) in all samples. Skin swabs of healthy areas yielded negative results for HSV-2 infection. The folliculitis showed a marked and quick improvement after therapy with famciclovir suggesting a possible etiologic role of HSV-2 in the scalp folliculitis.  相似文献

Spatial distribution of the Karoo paralysis tick (Ixodes rubicundus) has been studied in a paralysis enzootic area of the southwestern Orange Free state. Significantly more females than males were collected from the vegetation. Most ticks (99%) used grass as questing sites at a height of approximately 45 cm (range 10–97 cm), which correlates with the size of host animals. No significant differences between the questing height of male and fermale ticks were evident. The ticks were found on most of the grass species present and, except for the genusEragrostis no specific preference was evident. When questing, the capitulum ofI. rubicundus is usually (90%) directed towards the ground. Seventy-eight percent of the ticks occurred singly on a specific grassblade or flowerhead. In those cases where two ticks occurred together, no sexual aggregation was evident. Most ticks occurred under or close ( =62 cm) to the corwn cover of specific shrub or tree species. These plant species were characterized by a dense crown cover with a mat of decaying leaf litter underneath. The preference of the tick for wild olive trees (Olea europaea fricana) suggests that except for the physical characteristics of this tree species, host factors may also be important. Significantly more ticks were distributed on the cooler, more protected southern sides of vegetation in comparison to the northern sides.  相似文献

The distributions of neuropeptides in paraffin-embedded tissue sections (PETS) of the eyestalk, brain, and thoracic ganglia of the shrimp Penaeus monodon were visualized by imaging mass spectrometry (IMS). Peptide signals were obtained from PETS without affecting morphological features. Twenty-nine neuropeptides comprising members of FMRFamide, SIFamides, crustacean hyperglycaemic hormone, orcokinin-related peptides, tachykinin-related peptides, and allatostatin A were detected and visualized. Among these findings we first identified tachykinin-related peptide as a novel neuropeptide in this shrimp species. We found that these neuropeptides were distributed at specific areas in the three neural organs. In addition, 28 peptide sequences derived from 4 types of constitutive proteins, including actin, histones, arginine kinase, and cyclophilin A were also detected. All peptide sequences were verified by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The use of IMS on acetic acid-treated PETS enabled us to identify peptides and obtain their specific localizations in correlation with the undisturbed histological structure of the tissue samples.  相似文献

Aims Theory suggests that species perform best at intermediate densities, where density-dependent facilitation and antagonism are balanced, but empirical evidence is scarce, particularly in plants. In a self-incompatible perennial herb (Saussurea nigrescens), whose recruitment heavily relies on seed output, we test whether both intraspecific facilitation and antagonism significantly affect seed production, resulting in highest seed yield at an intermediate capitulum density.Methods Plots with different S. nigrescens densities were sampled in an Eastern Tibetan meadow during the growing season of 2012 to investigate the relationships between capitulum density and pollinator visitation rate, seed set ratio, parasite ratio, seed damage ratio, and capitulum size. Both simple linear and quadratic models were employed to determine the shape of relationships.Important findings In line with general theory, hump-shaped relationships of capitulum density versus seed set ratio and number of florets per capitulum indicate intraspecific facilitation in sparse populations, which can be attributed to positive density-dependent pollinator visitation and the amelioration of detrimental physical factors. However, the proportion of seeds damaged by pre-dispersal predators increased monotonically with capitulum density, which may have—in combination with increased intraspecific competition for light and soil nutrients—resulted in density-dependent antagonism. Both positive and negative density-dependent agents acted simultaneously throughout the density range investigated and led to the highest seed yield at intermediate density levels in the Tibetan lotus. More efforts concurrently exploring the two effects are needed to facilitate understanding species abundance and community structure.  相似文献

The changes of the midgut in the females of the tick species Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus during the second and third immunizing feeding on rabbits were studied by the histological technics. The alternation of one generation of the digestive cells of nymphal stage and two generations of the digestive cells of adult stage was observed. The generation of secretory cells is absent. The tick completes feeding and drop off when the last generation of the digestive cells is on the initial activity stages. The amount of the blood consumed is not enough for the rhythmical functioning of the midgut. The feeding of tick is broken on the second phase and full satiation does not take place. It is apparently an effect of the interruption of the blood entrance into the midgut cavity of feeding tick as a probable result of anti-ticks resistance of unnatural hosts.  相似文献

Abstract

Sphagnum fuscum samples collected from an ombrotrophic bog were grown in a greenhouse at six water levels (0, 5, 10, 15, 25 and 30 cm) below the capitulum level and in four concentrations of CO2 (350, 700, 1000 and 2000 ppm). The cores of S. fuscum were treated for 87 days and length increment was measured by the plastic strip method and by innate time markers. Water content of the shoot, dry mass of the capitulum, dry mass per unit length of stem and production of dry mass were measured at the end of the experiment.

The water content, capitulum dry mass, dry mass per unit length of stem, length increment and dry mass production differed markedly for S. fuscum grown in different water levels. With lower water levels, the water content of the shoot decreased and the dry mass of both the capitulum and unit length of stem increased. The total length increment was highest when the water level was at or near the capitulum level (0–10 cm). No clear trend in dry mass production on an areal basis could be found due to uncoupled responses in length increment and stem dry mass at the experimental water levels.

Neither capitulum dry mass nor dry mass per unit length of stem showed distinct trends in S. fuscum grown at different ambient CO2 concentrations. Some increase in length increment and in dry mass production was detected at CO2 concentrations above 350 ppm, but this effect appeared only at high water levels. It is suggested that the low response in length increment and production to CO2 concentration resulted in part from insufficient moisture for photosynthesis at the lower water levels. Also, the possibility of increased nonstructural production is discussed.  相似文献

Genes encoding ferritins were isolated and cloned from cDNA libraries of hard tick Ixodes ricinus and soft tick Ornithodoros moubata. Both tick ferritins are composed of 172 amino-acid residues and their calculated mass is 19,667.2 Da and 19,974.5 Da for I. ricinus and O. moubata, respectively. The sequences of both proteins are closely related to each other as well as to the ferritin from another tick species Dermacentor variabilis (>84% similarity). The proteins contain the conserved motifs for ferroxidase center typical for heavy chains of vertebrate ferritins. The stem-loop structure of a putative iron responsive element was found in the 5' untranslated region of ferritin mRNA of both ticks. Antibodies against fusion ferritin from O. moubata were raised in a rabbit and used to monitor the purification of a small amount of ferritins from both tick species. The authenticity of ferritin purified from O. moubata was confirmed by mass-fingerprinting analysis. In the native state, the tick ferritins are apparently larger (~500 kDa) than horse spleen ferritin (440 kDa). On SDS-PAGE tick ferritins migrate as a single band of about 21 kDa. These results suggest that tick ferritins are homo-oligomers of 24 identical subunits of heavy-chain type. The Northern blot analysis revealed that O. moubata ferritin mRNA level is likely not up-regulated after ingestion of a blood meal.  相似文献

Vascular plant leaf traits that influence photosynthetic function form the basis of mechanistic models of carbon exchange. Given their unique tissue organization, bryophytes may not express similar patterns. We investigated relationships among tissue, shoot, and canopy traits, and their associations with photosynthetic characteristics in 10 Sphagnum species. Trait relationships were organized around a primary dimension accounting for 43% of variation in 12 traits. There was no significant relationship between nitrogen content of shoot systems and maximum photosynthesis expressed on mass (A(mass)) or area (A(area)) bases due to nitrogen sequestration and storage within the canopy interior. This pattern differs from the distribution of nitrogen in vascular plant canopies. Thus, nitrogen and its relationship to carbon uptake in Sphagnum shoots does not conform to patterns of either vascular plant leaves or canopies. Species that concentrate biomass and nitrogen in the capitulum have enhanced rates of A(mass) and A(area). Consequently, A(area) was positively associated with N(area) of the capitulum only. Overall, water content and carotenoid concentration were the strongest predictors of both A(mass) and A(area) and these were expressed as inverse relationships. The relationships of plant traits in Sphagnum defines a principal trade-off between species that tolerate environmental stress and those that maximize carbon assimilation.  相似文献

The brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus is one of the most important tick species in both veterinary and human medicine. Studies on the biology of this tick are pivotal in order to develop improved control strategies. The brown dog tick is a gregarious species, tending to form large clusters in highly infested environments. This is the case of engorged females of R. sanguineus that often tend to aggregate in the environment. In the present study, we assessed whether aggregation affects R. sanguineus females in the laboratory. Engorged females of R. sanguineus were separated in six groups, each with four replicates. Six groups (G1–G6) were composed of single, five, 10, 20, 40 or 60 females, for a total of 544 females. We found that aggregation (expressed as tick density within Petri dishes) affected egg production efficiency of females and incubation period, but not egg hatching. In particular, there was a strong negative correlation between tick density and the following parameters: egg mass weight, incubation period, egg production efficiency, reproduction efficiency index, and reproductive fitness index. However, for the maintenance of tick colonies, engorged females can be maintained in groups (density up to 0.4/cm2) without major prejudices in terms of egg production and hatch rate. This information might be useful for those interested in maintaining large tick colonies, as grouping engorged females might help to save space in incubators and, most importantly, to keep the genetic heterogeneity within the tick colony, across generations.  相似文献

Acanthocephalans of the genus Bolbosoma are intestinal parasites of marine mammals with a lifecycle similar to that of anisakid nematodes. Several cases of Bolbosoma infection in humans have been reported, but no species identification has been made. Here, we report a case of Bolbosoma infection, in which the worm was found in histological sections of the partially resected small intestine of a Japanese man. Morphological features of the worm reconstructed from serial sectioning indicated that the worm was most likely to be a sexually immature female of Bolbosoma capitatum. DNA extraction from paraffin-embedded sections and ITS1-5.8S rRNA-ITS2 sequencing showed that this species formed a monophyletic group with Bolbosoma nipponicum, and was clearly distinguishable from Corynosoma spp. or Polymorphus spp. These results may provide a reference for identifying and characterizing unknown acanthocephalans found in histological sections.  相似文献

Ixodid ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are the major vectors of pathogens threatening animal and human health. Tokat Province, Turkey, is a suitable habitat for extended tick activity with its moderate climate and vegetation. In the present study, we surveyed humans visiting health centers to determine the species diversity, geographical distribution, and seasonal activity of ixodid ticks infesting them. Out of 5,999 adult ticks collected from humans from April to September, 2008, 800 ticks were identified to species, while the remaining were identified to genus according to their distinct morphological characteristics. Hyalomma marginatum, Hyalomma detritum, Rhipicephalus bursa, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus, Haemaphysalis punctata, Dermacentor marginatus, and Ixodes laguri were the most prevalent tick species among 24 ixodid tick species infesting humans in the region. One of these tick species, Hyalomma isacii was identified as a new record for the ixodid tick fauna of Turkey. Hyalomma species were the most abundant in summer, while Dermacentor and Ixodes species displayed the lowest frequency. Hyalomma aegyptium infestation was very common on humans in the province. Results indicated that a variety of ixodid tick species infest humans depending on the season in the target area.
