Eccentrically biased exercise results in skeletal muscle damage and stimulates adaptations in muscle, whereby indexes of damage are attenuated when the exercise is repeated. We hypothesized that changes in ultrastructural damage, inflammatory cell infiltration, and markers of proteolysis in skeletal muscle would come about as a result of repeated eccentric exercise and that gender may affect this adaptive response. Untrained male (n = 8) and female (n = 8) subjects performed two bouts (bout 1 and bout 2), separated by 5.5 wk, of 36 repetitions of unilateral, eccentric leg press and 100 repetitions of unilateral, eccentric knee extension exercises (at 120% of their concentric single repetition maximum), the subjects' contralateral nonexercised leg served as a control (rest). Biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis from each leg 24 h postexercise. After bout 2, the postexercise force deficit and the rise in serum creatine kinase (CK) activity were attenuated. Women had lower serum CK activity compared with men at all times (P < 0.05), but there were no gender differences in the relative magnitude of the force deficit. Muscle Z-disk streaming, quantified by using light microscopy, was elevated vs. rest only after bout 1 (P < 0.05), with no gender difference. Muscle neutrophil counts were significantly greater in women 24 h after bout 2 vs. rest and bout 1 (P < 0.05) but were unchanged in men. Muscle macrophages were elevated in men and women after bout 1 and bout 2 (P < 0.05). Muscle protein content of the regulatory calpain subunit remained unchanged whereas ubiquitin-conjugated protein content was increased after both bouts (P < 0.05), with a greater increase after bout 2. We conclude that adaptations to eccentric exercise are associated with attenuated serum CK activity and, potentially, an increase in the activity of the ubiquitin proteosome proteolytic pathway. 相似文献

Metabolic demand and muscle mechanical tension are closely coupled during exercise, making their respective drives to the circulatory response difficult to establish. This coupling being altered in eccentric cycling, we implemented an experimental design featuring eccentric vs. concentric constant-load cycling bouts to gain insights into the control of the exercise-induced circulatory response in humans. Heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (Q), oxygen uptake (V(.-)(O(2))), and electromyographic (EMG) activity of quadriceps muscles were measured in 11 subjects during heavy concentric (heavy CON: 270 +/- 13 W; V(.-)(O(2)) = 3.59 +/- 0.20 l/min), heavy eccentric (heavy ECC: 270 +/- 13 W, V(.-)(O(2)) = 1.17 +/- 0.15 l/min), and light concentric (light CON: 70 +/- 9 W, V(.-)(O(2)) = 1.14 +/- 0.12 l/min) cycle bouts. Using a reductionist approach, the circulatory responses observed between heavy CON vs. light CON (difference in V(.-)(O(2)) and power output) was ascribed either to metabolic demand, as estimated from heavy CON vs. heavy ECC (similar power output, different V(.-)(O(2))), or to muscle mechanical tension, as estimated from heavy ECC vs. light CON (similar V(.-)(O(2)), different power output). 74% of the Q response was determined by the metabolic demand, also accounting for 65% and 84% of HR and SV responses, respectively. Consequently, muscle mechanical tension determined 26%, 35%, and 16% of the Q, HR, and SV responses, respectively. Q was significantly related to V(.-)(O(2)) (r(2) = 0.83) and EMG activity (r(2) = 0.82; both P < 0.001). These results suggest that the exercise-induced circulatory response is mainly under metabolic control and support the idea that the level of muscle activation plays a role in the cardiovascular regulation during cycle exercise in humans. 相似文献

Cardiac remodelling is commonly defined as a physiological or pathological state that may occur after conditions such as myocardial infarction, pressure overload, idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy or volume overload. When training excessively, the heart develops several myocardial adaptations causing a physiological state of cardiac remodelling. These morphological changes depend on the kind of training and are clinically characterised by modifications in cardiac size and shape due to increased load. Several studies have investigated morphological differences in the athlete’s heart between athletes performing strength training and athletes performing endurance training. Endurance training is associated with an increased cardiac output and volume load on the left and right ventricles, causing the endurance-trained heart to generate a mild to moderate dilatation of the left ventricle combined with a mild to moderate increase in left ventricular wall thickness. Strength training is characterised by an elevation of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This pressure overload causes an increase in left ventricular wall thickness. This may or may not be accompanied by a slight raise in the left ventricular volume. However, the development of an endurancetrained heart and a strength-trained heart should not be considered an absolute concept. Despite full voluntary effort, neuromuscular activation of the quadriceps femoris muscle appears inhibited during slow concentric and eccentric contractions. Our aim was to compare neuromuscular activation during maximal voluntary concentric and eccentric quadriceps contractions, hypothesizing that inhibition of neuromuscular activation diminishes with resistance training. In 15 men, pretraining electromyographic activity of the quadriceps muscles [vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), and rectus femoris (RF)] was 17-36% lower during slow and fast (30 and 240 degrees/s) eccentric and slow concentric contractions compared with fast concentric contractions. After 14 wk of heavy resistance training, neuromuscular inhibition was reduced for VL and VM and was completely removed for RF. Concurrently, electromyographic activity increased 21-52, 22-29, and 16-32% for VL, VM, and RF, respectively. In addition, median power frequency decreased for VL and RF. Eccentric quadriceps strength increased 15-17%, whereas slow and fast concentric strength increased 15 and 8%, respectively. Pre- and posttraining median power frequency did not differ between eccentric and concentric contractions. In conclusion, quadriceps motoneuron activation was lower during maximal voluntary eccentric and slow concentric contractions compared with during fast concentric contraction in untrained subjects, and, after heavy resistance training, this inhibition in neuromuscular activation was reduced. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare pure eccentric and concentric isokinetic training with respect to their possible specificity in the adaptation of strength and morphology of the knee extensor muscles. Ten moderately trained male physical education students were divided into groups undertaking eccentric (ETG) and concentric (CTG) training. They performed 10 weeks of maximal isokinetic (90 degrees x s(-1)) training of the left leg, 4x10 repetitions - three times a week, followed by a second 10-week period of similar training of the right-leg. Mean eccentric and concentric peak torques increased by 18% and 2% for ETG and by 10% and 14% for CTG, respectively. The highest increase in peak torque occurred in the eccentric 90 degrees x s(-1) test for ETG (35%) whereas in CTG strength gains ranged 8%-15% at velocities equal or lower than the training velocity. Significant increases in strength were observed in the untrained contra-lateral leg only at the velocity and mode used in ipsilateral training. Cross-sectional area of the quadriceps muscle increased 3%-4% with training in both groups, reaching statistical significance only in ETG. No major changes in muscle fibre composition or areas were detected in biopsies from the vastus lateralis muscle for either leg or training group. In conclusion, effects of eccentric training on muscle strength appeared to be more mode and speed specific than corresponding concentric training. Only minor adaptations in gross muscle morphology indicated that other factors, such as changes in neural activation patterns, were causing the specific training-induced gains in muscle strength. 相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of contraction velocity on the eccentric (ECC) and concentric (CON) torque production of the biceps brachii. After performing warm-up procedures, each male subject (n = 11) completed 3 sets of 5 maximal bilateral CON and ECC isokinetic contractions of the biceps at speeds of 90, 180, and 300 degrees x s(-1) on a Biodex System 3 dynamometer. The men received a 3-minute rest between sets and the order of exercises was randomized. Peak torque (Nm) values were obtained for CON and ECC contractions at each speed. Peak torque scores (ECC vs. CON) were compared using a t-test at each speed. A repeated measures analysis of variance was used to determine differences between speeds. ECC peak torque scores were greater than CON peak torque scores at each given speed: 90 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001; 180 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001; and 300 degrees x s(-1), p = 0.0001. No differences were found between the ECC peak torque scores (p = 0.62) at any of the speeds. Differences were found among the CON scores (p = 0.004). Post hoc analysis revealed differences between 90 degrees x s(-1) (114.61 +/- 23) and 300 degrees x s(-1) (94.17 +/- 18). These data suggest that ECC contractions of the biceps brachii were somewhat resistant to a force decrement as the result of an increase in velocity, whereas CON muscular actions of the biceps brachii were unable to maintain force as velocity increased. 相似文献

Two composite scores for the relative balance of eccentric to concentric strength at the different movement velocities were calculated (the DEC and SEC), to determine whether or not self perceived pain, disability, or fear avoidance measures were associated with hamstring strength characteristics.DesignCross-sectional repeated measures design.SettingUniversity laboratory.ParticipantsFifteen individuals with chronic LBP and 15 matched controls.Main outcome measuresIsokinetic eccentric and concentric strength at 30° s?1 and 120° s?1. Composite scores (DEC and SEC) based on peak torque were calculated to evaluate the relationship between the different muscle actions across the test velocities. Self report measures included the Oswestry disability index, general health and well being, fear avoidance, and pain.ResultsEccentric/concentric strength ratio at 30° s?1 was higher for the LBP group (F(1,58) = 4.81, p = 0.032). The SEC was also higher for the LBP (F(1,58) = 5.97, p = 0.018). Fear avoidance beliefs and mental well-being were significantly associated with the SEC only in the LBP group (adjusted r2 = 0.26, (F(2,27) = 5.8, p = .008). For the control group both the DEC and SEC were associated with self report measures. Matched differences between groups’ for the SEC were best explained by fear avoidance beliefs about work (adjusted r2 = 0.12, F(1,28) = 5.1, p = 0.03).ConclusionReduced concentric relative to eccentric strength is best identified by the SEC. The SEC was significantly associated with impaired self report measures of fear avoidance and mental well being in individuals with LBP. Differences between groups for the SEC were best explained by fear avoidance beliefs about work. 相似文献

Although research has demonstrated that isokinetic eccentric (ECC) strength is 20-60% greater than isokinetic concentric (CON) strength, few data exist comparing these strength differences in standard dynamic resistance exercises. The purpose of the study was to determine the difference in maximal dynamic ECC and CON strength for 6 different resistance exercises in young men and women. Ten healthy young men (mean +/- SE, 25.30 +/- 1.34 years), and 10 healthy young women (mean +/- SE, 23.40 +/- 1.37 years) who were regular exercisers with resistance training experience participated in the study. Two sessions were performed to determine CON and ECC 1 repetitions maximum for latissimus pull-down (LTP), leg press (LP), bench press (BP), leg extension (LE), seated military press (MP), and leg curl (LC) exercises. Maximal ECC and maximal CON strength were determined on weight stack machines modified to isolate ECC and CON contractions using steel bars and pulleys such that only 1 type of contraction was performed. Within 2 weeks, participants returned and completed a retest trial in a counterbalanced fashioned. Test-retest reliability was excellent (r = 0.99) for all resistance exercise trials. Men demonstrated 20-60% greater ECC than CON strength (LTP = 32%, LP = 44%, BP = 40%, LE = 35%, MP = 49%, LC = 27%). Women's strength exceeded the proposed parameters for greater ECC strength in 4 exercises, p < 0.05 (LP = 66%, BP = 146%, MP = 161%, LC = 82%). The ECC/CON assessment could help coaches capitalize on muscle strength differences in young men and women during training to aid in program design and injury prevention and to enhance strength development. 相似文献

Catechins have a great variety of biological actions. We evaluated the potential benefits of catechin ingestion on muscle contractile properties, oxidative stress, and inflammation following downhill running, which is a typical eccentric exercise, in senescence-accelerated prone mice (SAMP). Downhill running (13 m/min for 60 min; 16° decline) induced a greater decrease in the contractile force of soleus muscle and in Ca(2+)-ATPase activity in SAMP1 compared with the senescence-resistant mice (SAMR1). Moreover, compared with SAMR1, SAMP1 showed greater downhill running-induced increases in plasma CPK and LDH activity, malondialdehyde, and carbonylated protein as markers of oxidative stress; and in protein and mRNA expression levels of the inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in muscle. SAMP1 exhibited aging-associated vulnerability to oxidative stress and inflammation in muscle induced by downhill running. Long-term (8 wk) catechin ingestion significantly attenuated the downhill running-induced decrease in muscle force and the increased inflammatory mediators in both plasma and gastrocnemius muscle. Furthermore, catechins significantly inhibited the increase in oxidative stress markers immediately after downhill running, accompanied by an increase in glutathione reductase activity. These findings suggest that long-term catechin ingestion attenuates the aging-associated loss of force production, oxidative stress, and inflammation in muscle after exercise. 相似文献

The concentric and eccentric strength profile and muscular balance of the hip joint are important parameters for success in soccer. This study evaluated the reliability for the assessment of hip abduction and adduction isokinetic strength over a range of angular velocities (30 and 90°/s) and types of muscular actions (concentric and eccentric) in young soccer players. The reliability for the assessment of reciprocal (conventional and functional) and bilateral torque ratios was also examined. Fifteen male soccer players (15±1 years) performed two sessions, separated by three days. The testing protocol consisted of five maximal concentric and eccentric hip abductions and adductions of both legs at angular velocities of 30°/s and 90°/s. The peak torque was evaluated in young soccer players using an isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex Norm), and the reciprocal strength ratios (conventional and functional) and bilateral ratios (non-preferred to preferred leg ratios) were calculated. The test-retest reliability for the assessment of peak torque (ICC = 0.71-0.92) and of reciprocal muscle group ratios (ICC = 0.44-0.87) was found to be moderate to high. Bilateral torque ratios exhibited low to moderate reliability (ICC = 0.11-0.64). In conclusion, isokinetic strength of hip abductor and adductor muscles and the conventional and functional strength ratios can be reliably assessed in young soccer players, especially at low angular velocities. The assessment, however, of bilateral strength ratios for hip abductor/adductor muscles should be interpreted with more caution. 相似文献

Women (age 20.0 ± 0.5 yr) randomly assigned to Con training (CTG;n = 16), Ecc training (ETG;n = 19), and control (CG;n = 19) groups were tested before andafter 10 wk of unilateral Con or Ecc knee-extension training. Averagetorque measured during Con and Ecc maximal voluntary knee extensions increased 18.4 and 12.8% for CTG, 6.8 and 36.2% for ETG, and 4.7 and1.7% for CG, respectively. Increases by CTG and ETG were greater than for CG (P < 0.05). ForCTG, the increase was greater when measured with Con than with Ecctesting. For ETG, the increase was greater when measured with Ecc thanwith Con testing. The increase by ETG with Ecc testing was greater thanthe increase by CTG with Con testing. Corresponding changes in theintegrated voltage from an electromyogram measured during strengthtesting were 21.7 and 20.0% for CTG, 7.1 and 16.7% for ETG, and8.0 and 9.1% for CG. Quadriceps cross-sectional areameasured by magnetic resonance imaging (sum of 7 slices) increased morein ETG (6.6%) than in CTG (5.0%) (P < 0.05). We conclude that Ecc is more effective than Con isokinetictraining for developing strength in Ecc isokinetic muscle actions andthat Con is more effective than Ecc isokinetic training for developingstrength in Con isokinetic muscle actions. Gains in strength consequentto Con and Ecc training are highly dependent on the muscle action usedfor training and testing. The present study aimed to standardize isotonic (IT) and isokinetic (IK) eccentric exercises by equalizing the amount of work and the angular velocity at two intensity levels, to be able to compare specific effects of these exercise modes on the neuromuscular system. Fourteen subjects participated in three test sessions consisting of two IT and two IK sets on a customized isokinetic dynamometer. IT sets were comprised of 8 eccentric contractions of the knee extensors at 120% of the maximal repetition (1RM) in the first two sessions, and 100% in the third session. IK sets were performed at the same mean angular IT velocity and stopped when the amount of work performed corresponded to the IT set. External work, angular velocity and Root Mean Square (RMS) of electromyographic activity of three superficial muscles of the quadriceps femoris were calculated. Results showed concordance of work and angular velocity for each test session. Both modes involved the same number of repetitions at 120% and fewer repetitions in IK mode at 100% of 1RM. Work and RMS values remained steady in all sets. This study allowed the standardization of isotonic and isokinetic eccentric exercises, a first step before determining their specific effects on neuromuscular function. 相似文献

O2 uptake (VO2) kinetics and electromyographic (EMG) activity from the vastus medialis, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and medial gastrocnemius muscles were studied during constant-load concentric and eccentric cycling. Six healthy men performed transitions from baseline to high-intensity eccentric (HE) exercise and to high-intensity (HC), moderate-intensity (MC), and low-intensity (LC) concentric exercise. For HE and HC exercise, absolute work rate was equivalent. For HE and LC exercise, VO2 was equivalent. VO2 data were fit by a two- or three-component exponential model. Surface EMG was recorded during the last 12 s of each minute of exercise to obtain integrated EMG and mean power frequency. Only in the HC exercise did VO2 increase progressively with evidence of a slow component (phase 3), and only in HC exercise was there evidence of a coincident increase with time in integrated EMG of the vastus medialis and rectus femoris muscles (P < 0.05) with no change in mean power frequency. The phase 2 time constant was slower in HC [24.0 +/- 1.7 (SE) s] than in HE (14.7 +/- 2.8 s) and LC (16.7 +/- 2.2 s) exercise, while it was not different from MC exercise (20.6 +/- 2.1 s). These results show that the rate of increase in VO2 at the onset of exercise was not different between HE and LC exercise, where the metabolic demand was similar, but both had significantly faster kinetics for VO2 than HC exercise. The VO2 slow component might be related to increased muscle activation, which is a function of metabolic demand and not absolute work rate. 相似文献

A new computerized dynamometer (the SPARK System) is described. The system can measure concentric and eccentric muscle strength (torque) during linear or nonlinear acceleration or deceleration, isokinetic movements up to 400 degrees.s-1, and isometric torque. Studies were performed to assess: I. validity and reproducibility of torque measurements; II. control of lever arm position; III. control of different velocity patterns; IV. control of velocity during subject testing; and, V. intra-individual reproducibility. No significant difference was found between torque values computed by the system and known torque values (p greater than 0.05). No difference was present between programmed and external measurement of the lever arm position. Accelerating, decelerating and isokinetic velocity patterns were highly reproducible, with differences in elapsed time among 10 trials being never greater than 0.001 s. Velocity during concentric and eccentric isokinetic quadriceps contractions at 30 degrees.s-1, 120 degrees.s-1 and 270 degrees.s-1 never varied by more than 3 degrees.s-1 among subjects (N = 21). Over three days of testing, the overall error for concentric and eccentric quadriceps contraction peak torque values for 5 angular velocities between 30 degrees.s-1 and 270 degrees.s-1 ranged from 5.8% to 9.0% and 5.8% to 9.6% respectively (N = 25). The results indicate that the SPARK System provides valid and reproducible torque measurements and strict control of velocity. Many studies have reported strength gains in older adults following high-intensity resistance training. However, the muscle
contraction types examined have been primarily isometric (static) or concentric (CONC; shortening). Less is known about how
eccentric (ECC) strength in older adults responds to training or about the efficacy of ECC contractions as training stimuli
in these subjects, even though muscle contractions of this type are performed in most training regimens and daily physical
activities. In this study, 15 physically active, healthy older women [68 (5) years; mean (SD)] completed an 8-week resistance
training program of two sessions per week. Training consisted of three sets of eight repetitions of CONC ankle plantar flexion
(PF) and ECC dorsiflexion (DF), at greater than 80% of the initial peak torque, in a standing position only. Subjects were
tested in standing and supine positions for: (1) strength over a range of 10° DF to 20° PF for both CONC and ECC; DF and PF
(2) passive resistive torque of the plantar flexors at 6°/s; and (3) DF and PF rate of torque development. All strength testing
and training was done at 30°/s. Significant increases (P < 0.01) were found for both CONC DF (↑30%) and ECC DF (↑17%) peak torque in the standing position. No significant changes
occurred for DF strength as measured with the subjects in the supine position, PF strength in either position, passive resistive
torque, or rate of torque development. In summary, strength gains occurred only in the dorsiflexors, which were trained using
ECC contractions. Improvements in DF strength were specific to the position of training, which has implications for the transferability
of strength gains to functional tasks such as maintaining gait.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of elevated muscle vitamin E content on skeletal muscle damage from eccentric exercise. Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were put on a normal (40 IU vitamin E/kg food) or supplemented (10,000 IU vitamin E/kg food) diet for 5 wk. Injury in soleus muscle was determined using several criteria: reductions in maximal tetanic force and number of intact fibers per square millimeter and elevations in muscle glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and plasma creatine kinase activity, either immediately (0 h) or 2 days (48 h) after a downhill walking protocol. Sedentary animals were also tested but did not exercise. Muscle vitamin E levels were significantly elevated (approximately 3- to 4-fold), and susceptibility of the muscles to oxidant stress was decreased, after supplementation. However, vitamin E supplementation did not attenuate injury by any of the criteria employed. Maximal tetanic force decreased approximately 20% at 0 and 48 h after exercise in both groups. The number of intact fibers per square millimeter decreased approximately 30-35% in both groups at 0 and 48 h. Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity increased approximately 50-100% in both groups at 48 h, and plasma creatine kinase activity was elevated approximately 2- to 2.5-fold at 0 h in both groups. These findings do not support a major role for free radical damage to muscle membranes in the initiation of injury from eccentric exercise, although they do not disprove free radical involvement in the etiology. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate systematically if complementary knowledge could be obtained from the recordings of electromyography (EMG) and mechanomyography (MMG) signals. EMG and MMG activities were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle during slow concentric, isometric, and eccentric contraction at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The combination of the EMG and MMG recordings during voluntary concentric-isometric-eccentric contraction showed significant different non-linear EMG/force and MMG/force relationships (P<0.001). The EMG root mean square (rms) values increased significantly from 0 to 50% MVC during concentric and isometric contraction and up to 75% MVC during eccentric contraction (P<0.05). The MMG rms values increased significantly from 0 to 50% MVC during concentric contraction (P<0.05). The non-linear relationships depended mainly on the type and the level of contraction together with the angular velocity. Furthermore, the type of contraction, the contraction level, and the angular velocity influenced the electromechanical efficiency evaluated as the MMG to EMG ratio (P<0.05). These results highlight that EMG and MMG provide complementary information about the electrical and mechanical activity of the muscle. Eccentric and concentric force and median frequency of the EMG power spectrum were measured during and immediately after maximal eccentric (EE) and concentric (CE) exercise and during the recovery period of 1 week. Eight male subjects performed EE and CE consisting of 100 maximal eccentric and concentric actions with elbow flexors during two separate exercise sessions. When comparing maximal eccentric and concentric actions before the exercises, the average force was higher (P<0.001) in eccentric than in concentric but the average rectified EMG (aEMG) values were the same with the two types of action. The average eccentric force decreased 53.3% after EE and 30.6% after CE, while the average concentric force decreased 49.9% after CE and 38.4% after EE. The recovery was slower after EE. The median frequency (MF) of biceps brachii (BB) in eccentric action decreased during both EE (P<0.01) and CE (P<0.05). It recovered within 2 days of the exercises but was lower again (P<0.01) 7 days after EE. In concentric action MF of BB decreased during CE (P<0.01), while no changes were observed in EE. Blood lactate concentration increased (P<0.001) in both exercises and serum creatine kinase (CK) activity increased in EE only, being significantly higher (P<0.001) 7 days after than before the eccentric exercise. In the absolute scale, the eccentric force in EE decreased more than the concentric force in CE (P<0.01). Fatigue response was action type specific as seen in the greater reduction in the force of the exercise type. MF decreased immediately after both exercises, which may be at least partly related to elevated blood lactate concentration. Eccentric actions led to possible muscle damage as indicated by elevated serum CK and muscle soreness, and therefore to longer recovery as compared to concentric actions. Decreased MF after EE may be indicative of selective damage of the fast twitch fibers in this type of exercise. 相似文献
