Anatomic variability in the deposition of radiofrequency electromagnetic energy in mammals has been well documented. A recent study [D'Andrea et al., 1985] reported specific absorption rate (SAR) hotspots in the brain, rectum and tail of rat carcasses exposed to 360- and to 2,450-MHz microwave radiation. Regions of intense energy absorption are generally thought to be of little consequence when predicting thermal effects of microwave irradiation because it is presumed that heat transfer via the circulatory system promptly redistributes localized heat to equilibrate tissue temperature within the body. Experiments on anesthetized, male Long-Evans rats (200-260 g) irradiated for 10 or 16 min with 2,450, 700, or 360 MHz radiation at SARs of 2 W/kg, 6 W/kg, or 10 W/kg indicated that postirradiation localized temperatures in regions previously shown to exhibit high SARs were appreciably above temperatures at body sites with lower SARs. The postirradiation temperatures in the rectum and tail were significantly higher in rats irradiated at 360 MHz and higher in the tail at 2,450 MHz than temperatures resulting from exposure to 700 MHz. This effect was found for whole-body-averaged SARs as low as 6 W/kg at 360 MHz and 10 W/kg at 2,450 MHz. In contrast, brain temperatures in the anesthetized rats were not different from those measured in the rest of the body following microwave exposure.  相似文献

Three key compounds in brain energy metabolism have been measured during and after exposure to continuous wave radiofrequency radiation at 200, 591, and 2,450 MHz. Frequency-dependent changes have been found for all three compounds. Changes in NADH fluorescence have been measured on the surface of a surgically uncovered rat brain during exposure. At 200 and 591 MHz, NADH fluorescence increased in a dose-dependent manner between approximately 1 and 10 mW/cm2, then became constant at higher exposures. There was no effect at 2,450 MHz. Levels of ATP and CP were measured in whole brain after exposure. The ATP levels were decreased at 200 and 591 MHz but not at 2,450 MHz. The CP levels decreased only at 591 MHz. The effect of duration of exposure (up to 5 min) was investigated for all compounds at 200 MHz and 2,450 MHz, and exposures to 20 minutes were examined at 591 MHz. Temperature in the rat brain was essentially constant for all exposures. A general mechanism for inhibition of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and the CP-kinase reaction pathway by radiofrequency radiation has been proposed.  相似文献

It would be useful to develop a tissue equivalent gel to improve the uniformity of the electromagnetic field in the human body, and for making a tissue equivalent dielectric human phantom. In this study, solid type, water based gelatin-honey gels were developed which have the electrical characteristics of skin tissue. It was demonstrated that a stable and homogeneous gel, with a relative dielectric constant epsilon ' chosen from desired ranges found in skin, can be made for 200-400 MHz.  相似文献

This paper addresses the exposure assessment of RFID devices for newborn identity reconfirmation. To that purpose, a realistic newborn model ("Baby") is used to evaluate by a computational approach the levels of exposure due to these devices. Considering the average technical specifications currently in use, the exposure matrix in Baby shows that the systems comply with the ICNIRP exposure guidelines. As second aim, the effects of the change of the tissue dielectric properties with age on the so called "exposure matrix" (set of induced magnetic and electric field together with the derived values of SAR) is addressed. Specifically, three different approaches proposed in literature for the age variation of the dielectric properties at 13.56 MHz (the working frequency of the RFID systems for these applications) have been implemented using the Baby geometrical model. The related exposure matrices were then compared with the results obtained using the adult properties. No clear trend can be identified on the exposure matrices obtained varying the dielectric properties at 13.56 MHz, although the results could suggest a trend toward the underestimation of the exposure using adult properties.  相似文献

Single giant cells of Chara braunii and Nitella flexilis were placed in a microstrip exposure apparatus and subjected to bursts of electromagnetic radiation (carrier frequencies from 200 to 8,200 MHz) at a nominal power level of 100 W/m2. The vacuolar potential was monitored with a micropipette, and offsets as low as 1 μ V could be resolved in real time by suitable filtering and signal averaging; under these conditions, no offsets of the vacuolar potential were detected. At much higher power levels (corresponding to > 2 V rms between microstrip and ground plane), the slow hyperpolarizing ramp reported at lower frequencies could be seen but, because of insufficient power, could not be accurately measured. It appeared to decay beyond 500 MHz and to be absent at and above 950 MHz. To investigate reports that snail neurons irradiated for 1 h at 2,450 MHz and approximately 15.5 W/kg developed lowered membrane resistivities, Characean cells were exposed in the microstrip apparatus for 1 h at 2,450 MHz and 230 W/m2; their membrane resistivities were found to be lowered about 18.5%.  相似文献

Because exposure to microwave fields at the resonant frequency may generate heat deep in the body, hyperthermia may result. This problem has been examined in an animal model to determine both the thresholds for response change and the steady-state thermoregulatory compensation for body heating during exposure at resonant (450 MHz) and supra-resonant (2,450 MHz) frequencies. Adult male squirrel monkeys, held in the far field of an antenna within an anechoic chamber, were exposed (10 min or 90 min) to either 450-MHz or 2,450-MHz CW fields (E polarization) in cool environments. Whole-body SARs ranged from 0-6 W/kg (450 MHz) and 0-9 W/kg (2,450 MHz). Colonic and several skin temperatures, metabolic heat production, and evaporative heat loss were monitored continuously. During brief RF exposures in the cold, the reduction of metabolic heat production was directly proportional to the SAR, but 2,450-MHz energy was a more efficient stimulus than was the resonant frequency. In the steady state, a regulated increase in deep body temperature accompanied exposure at resonance, not unlike that which occurs during exercise. Detailed analyses of the data indicate that temperature changes in the skin are the primary source of the neural signal for a change in physiological interaction processes during RF exposure in the cold.  相似文献

Ten experiments on pigs were performed to investigate possible postmortem changes of the dielectric properties of brain gray matter in the frequency range of 800-1900 MHz. After keeping the animals in stable anaesthesia for at least 45 min, they were euthanatised by an intravenous injection of hypertonic potassium chloride (KCl), causing cardiac arrest within 3 min. Measurements of the dielectric properties were performed repeatedly from at least 45 min prior to death to 18 h after euthanasia. The anaesthesia regimen was chosen to minimize influence on brain tissue characteristics such as brain water content, intracranial blood volume, and cerebral blood flow. The data showed a decline of mean gray matter equivalent conductivity of about 15% at 900 MHz and about 11% at 1800 MHz within the first hour after death. The decline in permittivity was less pronounced (about 3-4%) and almost frequency independent. The results indicate that in vitro measurements of dielectric properties of brain tissue underestimate equivalent conductivity as well as permittivity of living tissue. These changes may affect the generally accepted data of dielectric properties of brain tissue widely used in RF dosimetry.  相似文献

Artificial materials that can simultaneously mimic the relative permittivity and conductivity of various human tissues are usually used in medical applications. However, the method of precisely designing these materials with designated values of both relative permittivity and conductivity at 3 T MRI resonance frequency is lacking. In this study, a reliable method is established to determine the compositions of artificial dielectric materials with designated relative permittivity and conductivity at 128 MHz. Sixty dielectric materials were produced using oil, sodium chloride, gelatin, and deionized water as the main raw materials. The dielectric properties of these dielectric materials were measured using the open‐ended coaxial line method at 128 MHz. Nonlinear least‐squares Marquardt–Levenberg algorithm was used to obtain the formula, establishing the relationship between the compositions of the dielectric materials and their dielectric properties at 128 MHz. The dielectric properties of the blood, gall bladder, muscle, skin, lung, and bone at 128 MHz were selected to verify the reliability of the obtained formula. For the obtained formula, the coefficient of determination and the expanded uncertainties with a coverage factor of k = 2 were 0.991% and 4.9% for relative permittivity and 0.992% and 6.4% for conductivity. For the obtained artificial materials measured using the open‐ended coaxial line method, the maximal difference of relative permittivity and conductivity were 1.0 and 0.02 S/m, respectively, with respect to the designated values. In conclusion, the compositions of tissue‐mimicking material can be quickly determined after the establishment of the formulas with the expanded uncertainties of less than 10%. The complex permittivities of L-alpha-lysolecithin in the absence and presence of the gramicidin A ion channel were measured over the temperature range 0-60 degrees C and over the frequency range 1-1000 MHz. One dielectric relaxation/loss has been observed. It is located at 103.3 MHz (1.54 ns) for a micellar 0.4 M L-alpha-lysolecithin solution at 20 degrees C, whereas it is shifted to 71.7 MHz (2.22 ns) for a lamellar L-alpha-lysolecithin-gramicidin A aqueous solution (0.4 M L-alpha-lysolecithin, 0.0308 M gramicidin A) at 20 degrees C. The dielectric relaxation decreases and the relaxation time increases when gramicidin A is incorporated into L-alpha-lysolecithin. These dielectric changes are related, in part, to the micellar-to-lamellar lipid phase transition induced by the incorporation of gramicidin A into lysolecithin. We suggest that the diffuse rotational motion of the polar head group of L-alpha-lysolecithin contributes to the dielectric relaxation/loss at around 100 MHz.  相似文献

The specific absorption rate (SAR) measurements are carried out for compliance testing of personal 3G Mobile phone. The accuracy of this experimental setup has been checked by comparing the SAR in 10?gm of simulated tissue and an arbitrary shaped box. This has been carried out using a 3G mobile Phone at 1718.5?MHz, in a medium simulating brain and muscle phantom. The SAR measurement system consists of a stepper motor to move a monopole E-field probe in two dimensions inside an arbitrary shaped box. The phantom is filled with appropriate frequency-specific fluids with measured electrical properties (dielectric constant and conductivity). That is close to the average for gray and white matters of the brain at the frequencies of interest (1718.5?MHz). Induced fields are measured using a specially designed monopole probe in its close vicinity. The probe is immersed in the phantom material. The measured data for induced fields are used to compute SAR values at various locations with respect to the mobile phone location. It is concluded that these SAR values are position dependent and well below the safety criteria prescribed for human exposure.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of gray matter in the frequency range of 800-2450 MHz were measured on 20 human brains immediately after excision, less than 10 h after death. The brains were obtained during autopsy of 10 male and 10 female humans who died at ages between 47.5 and 87.5 years [70.4 +/- 9.8 years, mean +/- standard deviation (SD)]. The tissue temperature at the measurement sites ranged between 18 and 25 degrees C (21.35 +/- 1.6 degrees C, mean +/- SD). On each brain, four specific locations on the temporal lobe were measured on the right and left sides, i.e., 160 different measurements of the dielectric properties were performed. The dielectric probe was placed on the intact arachnoid on a gyrus in the selected area. The measurements yielded a mean value (+/-SD) of gray matter equivalent conductivity of 1.13 +/- 0.12 and 2.09 +/- 0.16 S/m at 800 and 2450 MHz, respectively. The mean value of measured relative permittivity was 58.2 +/- 3.3 and 54.7 +/- 3.3 at 800 and 2450 MHz, respectively. Taking into account a positive temperature coefficient of equivalent conductivity, these measurements indicate that the equivalent conductivity of human gray matter at body temperature is somewhat higher than today's generally accepted value, which is based on measurements on animal tissue and excised samples of human tissue measured more than 24 h postmortem.  相似文献

The relative permittivity and conductivity of aqueous solutions of oxyhaemoglobin and carboxyhaemoglobin were measured over the frequency range 150kHz-100MHz. To minimize errors of measurement the investigations were carried out with three different samples of each type of haemoglobin, independent apparatus being used in two different laboratories. The dielectric increment and relaxation time were calculated at each of several temperatures from the results. These lead to a dipole moment of 400 Debyes and an activation enthalpy of 17.6+/-1.4kJ.mol(-1), both of which were found to be independent of temperature to within experimental error over the range 3-35 degrees C. The value of the dipole moment shows that the distribution of charge throughout the haemoglobin molecule is nearly symmetrical with respect to the centre of charge. The magnitude of the activation enthalpy is similar to that of the viscosity of water, in accord with the common observation that dielectric relaxation and viscosity are related phenomena. No significant differences are found between the dielectric parameters of oxyhaemoglobin and carboxyhaemoglobin. Combining the results with those obtained from X-ray diffraction of the solid a hydration value of 0.45g of water/g of protein is suggested, subject to the limitations of the model used. Finally, the results indicate the presence of a subsidiary dispersion, which could be attributed to the above quantity of bound water having a static permittivity of about 100 and a relaxation frequency in the region 100-200MHz.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated whether exposure to 2450 MHz high-frequency electromagnetic fields (HFEMFs) could act as an environmental insult to evoke a stress response in A172 cells, using HSP70 and HSP27 as stress markers. The cells were exposed to a 2450 MHz HFEMF with a wide range of specific absorption rates (SARs: 5-200 W/kg) or sham conditions. Because exposure to 2450 MHz HFEMF at 50-200 W/kg SAR causes temperature increases in culture medium, appropriate heat control groups (38-44 degrees C) were also included. The expression of HSP 70 and HSP 27, as well as the level of phosphorylated HSP 27 ((78)Ser) (p-HSP27), was determined by Western blotting. Our results showed that the expression of HSP 70 increased in a time and dose-dependent manner at >50 W/kg SAR for 1-3 h. A similar effect was also observed in corresponding heat controls. There was no significant change in HSP 27 expression caused by HFEMF at 5-200 W/kg or by comparable heating for 1-3 h. However, HSP 27 phosphorylation increased transiently at 100 and 200 W/kg to a greater extent than at 40-44 degrees C. Phosphorylation of HSP 27 reached a maximum after 1 h exposure at 100 W/kg HFEMF. Our results suggest that exposure to a 2450 MHz HFEMF has little or no apparent effect on HSP70 and HSP27 expression, but it may induce a transient increase in HSP27 Phosphorylation in A172 cells at very high SAR (>100 W/kg).  相似文献

Micronucleus induction after whole-body microwave irradiation of rats   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Adult male Wistar rats were exposed for 2 h a day, 7 days a week for up to 30 days to continuous 2,450 MHz radiofrequency microwave (rf/MW) radiation at a power density of 5-10 mW/cm(2). Sham-exposed rats were used as controls. After ether anesthesia, experimental animals were euthanized on the final irradiation day for each treated group. Peripheral blood smears were examined for the extent of genotoxicity, as indicated by the presence of micronuclei in polychromatic erythrocytes (PCEs). The results for the time-course of PCEs indicated significant differences (P<0.05) for the 2nd, the 8th and the 15th day between control and treated subgroups of animals. Increased influx of immature erythrocytes into the peripheral circulation at the beginning of the experiment revealed that the proliferation and maturation of nucleated erythropoietic cells were affected by exposure to the 2,450 MHz radiofrequency radiation. Such findings are indicators of radiation effects on bone-marrow erythropoiesis and their subsequent effects in circulating red cells. The incidence of micronuclei/1,000 PCEs in peripheral blood was significantly increased (P<0.05) in the subgroup exposed to rf/MW radiation after eight irradiation treatments of 2 h each in comparison with the sham-exposed control group. It is likely that an adaptive mechanism, both in erythrocytopoiesis and genotoxicity appeared in the rat experimental model during the subchronic irradiation treatment.  相似文献

This study reports the dosimetry performed to support an experiment that measured physiological responses of volunteer human subjects exposed to the resonant frequency for a seated human adult at 100 MHz. Exposures were performed in an anechoic chamber which was designed to provide uniform fields for frequencies of 100 MHz or greater. A half wave dipole with a 90 degrees reflector was used to optimize the field at the subject location. The dosimetry plan required measurement of transmitter harmonics, stationary probe drift, field strengths as a function of distance, electric and magnetic field maps at 200, 225, and 250 cm from the dipole antenna, and specific absorption rate (SAR) measurements using a human phantom, as well as theoretical predictions of SAR with the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. On each exposure test day, a measurement was taken at 225 cm on the beam centerline with a NBS E field probe to assure consistently precise exposures. A NBS 10 cm loop antenna was positioned 150 cm to the right, 100 cm above, and 60 cm behind the subject and was read at 5 min intervals during all RF exposures. These dosimetry measurements assured accurate and consistent exposures. FDTD calculations were used to determine SAR distribution in a seated human subject. This study reports the necessary dosimetry for work on physiological consequences of human volunteer exposures to 100 MHz.  相似文献

The in vitro bulk electrical properties of MCA1 fibrosarcoma induced in C57B1/6 male mice were measured at frequencies of 10 kHz to 100 MHz, with some tissues measured to 2 GHz. The properties of normal surrounding tissue also were measured. A comparison of the dielectric properties between three different stages of tumor development as well as that between various locations within the tumor is reported. Statistical analysis of the experimental results revealed statistically significant differences in the dielectric constant and conductivity of the tumor tissues at various stages of development as measured at frequencies below 10 MHz. Conductivity values at different stages also differ at a frequency of 100 MHz. At other frequencies these differences were found to be statistically insignificant.  相似文献

Background

The purpose was to investigate mobile phone interference with implantable deep brain stimulators by means of 10 different 900 Mega Hertz (MHz) and 10 different 1800 MHz GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) mobile phones.

Methods

All tests were performed in vitro using a phantom especially developed for testing with deep brain stimulators. The phantom was filled with liquid phantom materials simulating brain and muscle tissue. All examinations were carried out inside an anechoic chamber on two implants of the same type of deep brain stimulator: ITREL-III from Medtronic Inc., USA.

Results

Despite a maximum transmitted peak power of mobile phones of 1 Watt (W) at 1800 MHz and 2 W at 900 MHz respectively, no influence on the ITREL-III was found. Neither the shape of the pulse form changed nor did single pulses fail. Tests with increased transmitted power using CW signals and broadband dipoles have shown that inhibition of the ITREL-III occurs at frequency dependent power levels which are below the emissions of GSM mobile phones. The ITREL-III is essentially more sensitive at 1800 MHz than at 900 MHz. Particularly the frequency range around 1500 MHz shows a very low interference threshold.

Conclusion

These investigations do not indicate a direct risk for ITREL-III patients using the tested GSM phones. Based on the interference levels found with CW signals, which are below the mobile phone emissions, we recommend similar precautions as for patients with cardiac pacemakers: 1. The phone should be used at the ear at the opposite side of the implant and 2. The patient should avoid carrying the phone close to the implant.

In this paper, we present the effect of the plasma needle on tumor cell surface. The plasma is generated at the tip of a metal needle by using a radio-frequency generator of 13.56 MHz, 100's V amplitude. In our study we investigated the interaction of non-thermal plasma (plasma needle) with living monolayer tumour cells in culture medium. We applied short needle to sample distance (1 mm) at temperature of 25 degrees C, 30 degrees C and 37 degrees C, respectively. Our data sugest that the plasma needle reduces the viability and induces apoptosis of tumour cells. These activities may be very useful in dermatology, where a part of the tissue must be removed with high-precision, without damage to the adjacent cells and without inflammatory reaction.  相似文献
