Colonial basal metazoans often encounter members of their ownspecies as they grow on hard substrata, with the encounterstypically resulting in either fusion of close relatives or rejectionbetween unrelated colonies. These allorecognition responsesplay a critical role in maintaining the genetic and physiologicalintegrity of the colony. Allorecognition responses in basalmetazoans are controlled by highly variable genetic systems.The molecular nature of such systems, however, remains to bedetermined. Current efforts to identify the genes and moleculescontrolling allorecognition in basal metazoans have followedtwo pathways: identification of molecules differentially expressedin incompatible interactions, and positional or map-based cloningof allorecognition genes. Most studies following the first approachhave been performed with marine demosponges, while those followingthe second approach have centered on the cnidarian of the genusHydractinia. Here, I discuss the latter, focusing primarilyon the genetic control of allorecognition responses.  相似文献

The interaction between the hermit crab, Pagurus longicarpus, and the shell epibiont, Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus, varies from mutualism to parasitism based on the environmental context. We tested the hypothesis that this interaction also varies as a function of hermit crab sex. Given that recent work showed a negative effect of Hydractinia on female reproduction, we predicted a greater frequency of males in Hydractinia shells in the field and a stronger preference by males than females for shells with Hydractinia. Field collections documented a significantly greater proportion of males than females occupying shells with Hydractinia, and a significantly greater proportion of ovigerous females than non-ovigerous females in shells with Hydractinia. In laboratory shell-switching experiments, a greater proportion of males than females chose to enter shells with Hydractinia, but there was no difference in the proportions of males and females that vacated shells with Hydractinia.We examined whether the presence of Hydractinia influenced predation rates. Blue crabs fed on more than twice as many hermit crabs in shells with Hydractinia as compared to bare shells, but there was no significant difference for stone crabs. Laboratory experiments showed that the force required to crush shells was significantly greater for shells without Hydractinia. Thus, the lower occupancy and preference exhibited by females than males for shells with Hydractinia appears to result both from the decreased reproduction shown in past studies and an increase in predation risk.  相似文献

Colonial hydrozoans represent some of the most diverse and complexbody plans within the Metazoa. Complex hydrozoans colonies aremore physiologically and structurally integrated than theirsimple colonial relatives. Colonial integration is commonlyassociated with the regulation of the general structural planof the colony, the division of labor, and the physiologicalintegration of the colony. In the hydrozoan Hydractinia, thesefeatures are manifested through evolutionary innovations involvingthe spatial regulation of polyps within the colony, the developmentof polyp polymorphs, and the acquisition of a stolonal mat.These innovations all involve evolutionary changes in the regulationof polyp and colony-wide patterning systems. In Hydractinia,the ParaHox gene, Cnox-2, is expressed in a spatially restrictedmanner along the axes of stolons and polyps, suggesting thatchanges in the regulation of this gene may be in part responsiblefor the evolutionary innovations important for colonial complexity.  相似文献

Summary Homogenate of coelenterate tissue interferes with metamorphosis in Hydractinia and pattern formation in both Hydractinia, and Hydra. From the extracts two fractions comprising low-molecular-weight compounds with strong metamorphosis-inhibiting activity were separated. One of these contains, as the active compound, homarine (N-methyl picolinic acid). Homarine concentrations down to 10–6 mol/l stop or retard metamorphosis. High concentrations block the continuation of metamorphosis as long as they are maintained in the culture medium and treatment with homarine during metamorphosis influences the proportioning of the future polyp's body pattern. Most of the homarine found in Hydra tissue derives from Artemia given as food. It is not identical with inhibitor I, an activity partially purified from Hydra tissue, which prevents head and foot formation in Hydra.  相似文献

The effects of a number of metabolic inhibitors on calcificationand photosynthesis in Halimeda tuna, H. discoidea, and H. macrolobaare described. The inhibitors used are CCCP, DNP, DCMU, azide,cyanide, chloramphenicol, cycloheximide, and Diamox. The effectsof these inhibitors, although complex, are consistent with ourmodel of calcification in Halimeda. Inhibition of photosyntheticCO2 uptake inhibits calcification as does stimulation of respiratoryCO2 evolution (i.e. uncoupling). There is also indirect evidencefor the presence of a possible light stimulated H+ efflux whichinhibits calcification. The observed calcification rate is thereforethe result of a number of factors which affect the concentrationof COand the pH in the intercellular space of the Halimedathallus. The results obtained with the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor Diamoxprovide further evidence for the effective separation of theintercellular space from the external medium by the appressedperipheral utricles.  相似文献

By washing out solutes in 0.5 mM CaSO4at 25 °C during aperiod of 5–6 h, the release of sugars by excised stemsegments of Vicia faba L. was measured. The stem parasite Cuscutaeuropaea strongly stimulated the release of sucrose into theefflux medium; this effect was most marked during the last hoursof each experiment but this stimulating effect of the parasitecould not be detected for glucose and fructose. The fact thatparasitized stem segments released higher than normal hexoseamounts during the last hours of several experiments, couldbe explained as the result of extracellular hydrolysis of sucroseby free space invertase. A high free space acid invertase activitywas present in young stem segments of Vicia faba and in tissuesof Cuscuta. The stimulating influence of Cuscuta on sugar releaseby cells of stem segments appears sucrose-specific, supportingthe idea that the stimulating influence of Cuscuta on sugarrelease is restricted to the sieve-tube system. When metabolic inhibitors were added to the washing solutionor when segments were incubated at low temperature, no cleareffect of the parasite could be observed and for all segments(parasitized and non-parasitized) a strongly enhanced releaseof sucrose into the efflux medium was found during the lasthours of an experiment. These data support the idea that anintensive resorption of sucrose occurs within stem segments,after its release into the apoplast. Summary Retinoids have been shown to influence pattern formation in hydroid polyps (Hydractinia echinata) at various levels. These effects are counteracted by an inhibitor isolated from Hydra. The present study provides a theoretical attempt to elucidate the role of retinoids by computer simulations based on a simple model of pattern formation in Hydractinia. The elements of this model are morphogens of the Gierer-Meinhardt type, namely a long-range inhibitor and a short-range activator. From the calcualtions, a reducing effect of retinoids on the propagation of the inhibitor seems most probable.  相似文献

Background and Aims: Many notorious alien invasive plants are clonal, but littleis known about some roles and aspects of clonal integration.Here, the hypothesis is tested that clonal integration affectsgrowth, photosynthetic efficiency, biomass allocation and competitiveability of the exotic invasive weed Alternanthera philoxeroides(Amaranthaceae). Methods: The apical parts of Alternanthera were grown either with orwithout the lawn grass Schedonorus phoenix (tall fescue) andtheir stolon connections to the basal parts grown without competitorswere either severed or left intact. Key Results: Competition greatly reduced the maximum quantum yield of photosystemII (Fv/Fm) and growth (biomass, number of ramets and leaves,total stolon length and total leaf area) of the apical Alternanthera,but not the biomass of S. phoenix. Stolon connections significantlyincreased Fv/Fm and growth of Alternanthera. However, such effectson growth were smaller with than without competition and stolonconnections did not alter the relative neighbour effect of Alternanthera.Stolon connections increased Alternanthera's biomass allocationto roots without competition, but decreased it with competition. Conclusions: Clonal integration contributed little to Alternanthera's competitiveability, but was very important for Alternanthera to exploreopen space. The results suggest that the invasiveness of Alternantheramay be closely related to clonal integration.  相似文献

Using X-ray photography and flow cytometry, the internal morphologyand DNA replication activity of wild type (wt), GA- (gib-1 )and ABA-deficient (sitw ) tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.cv. Moneymaker) mutant seeds were studied. During seed formation,from 30 to 45 d after pollination (DAP) the endosperm becomessolid and the seed starts to gain desiccation tolerance. Atthis time significant changes occur in the amounts of DNA inradicle tip cells. At 30 DAP, radicle tip cells of the threegenotypes manifest about 60% of 2C, 30% of 4C and 10% of 8Camounts of DNA. Upon maturation (45 DAP onwards), most cellsin the seeds of the three genotypes arrest in the G1phase ofthe cell-cycle with 2C amounts of DNA. However, a relativelyhigh proportion of cells with 4C amounts of DNA was detectedin the radicle tip cells ofsitw compared with wild type andgib-1. At the well-matured stage (60 DAP), there were about 2% ofseeds with free space in wild type andgib-1 , and about 13%insitw . At the over-matured stage (75 DAP), even more seedswith free space were found insitw , whereas no increase in theproportion of the seeds with free space was detected in theother two genotypes. In -1.0 MPa PEG-6000 with or without 10µM GA4+7, no germination occurred in well-matured wildtype andgib-1 seeds, whether or not they were dried after harvest.However,sitw seeds were able to germinate both in over-maturefruit and in -1.0 MPa PEG-6000. Priming of dried seeds in -1.0MPa PEG induced a large amount of free space in almost all seedsof the three genotypes, and nuclear DNA synthesis in the radicletip cells of wild type andsitw seeds. However, PEG priming offresh (non-dried) seeds had no effect on the amount of freespace and 2C/4C DNA ratios in wild type orgib-1 seeds, but didinduce free space in about 20–25% ofsitw seeds and provoked4C signals insitw seeds. Removal of the endosperm and testaopposite the radicle tip of seeds resulted in root protrusion,the induction of free space and an increase of 4C DNA signalsin the three genotypes. It is concluded that ABA is crucialfor the efficient arrest of tomato embryo radicle tip cellsin G1phase upon maturation, whereas GAs play an important rolein re-initiating 4C DNA levels upon germination. Leaves of a chimaera which are composed of the tissues fromLycopersicum esculentum var. kinnari (L. e.) covered by twolayers of cells from Solatium villosum (S. v.) were comparedwith those of control plants, L. e. and S. v. with respect tothe respiratory activity. 2. As for the respiratory activity of leaf strips, the chimaerawas more active than either L. e.. or S. v. 3. To respiratory inhibitors examined leaf strips of the chimaeraresponded rather similarly to those of S. v. but differentlyfrom those of L. e. 4. Of various substrates tested, glycolic, ascorbic and chlorogenicacids were actively oxidized by cell-free extracts of leavesfrom every plant. The first two were especially good substratesfor S. v.: L. e. attacked most the third, and the chimaera oxidizedjust as well the first two as S. v. did and the third as L.e. did. 5. Ascorbic acid and chlorogenic acid contents of the leaf extractswere not correlated with the activities of the extracts of oxidizingthese substances. 6. Animals may exhibit a variety of defensive behaviors in thepresence of indirect predator cues. Such behavior offers immediatefitness benefits but may also incur substantial foraging andreproductive costs. We measured shifts in space use (verticalclimbing) by the wolf spider Pardosa milvina induced by chemotactilecues (silk and excreta) from a co-occurring predatory wolfspider Hogna helluo. We then measured foraging and reproductive costs, as well as survival benefits, of this behavior. For 2weeks, we maintained mated adult female Pardosa in plasticcontainers with one of three treated peat moss substrates:a container previously occupied by a conspecific for 3 days,a container previously occupied by an adult Hogna for 3 days,and a container devoid of either cue (control). We measuredprey capture efficiency, body condition, egg sac production,egg sac weight, and egg number for individuals in each treatment.We also counted the number of Pardosa that survived and exhibitedclimbing behavior in the presence of a live Hogna with andwithout silk and excreta cues. Pardosa climbed container wallssignificantly more often in the presence of Hogna silk andexcreta relative to other treatments. Pardosa exposed to Hognacues coupled with live Hogna survived significantly longerthan spiders that had no predator cues available. Pardosa placedin containers with Hogna cues, but no Hogna, lost weight morequickly, ate fewer prey, were in poorer body condition, producedlighter egg sacs, and produced fewer eggs than spiders in controlor conspecific treatments.  相似文献

The pigments contained in the inner seed coats of Cucurbitapepo, C. maxima and C. moschata were investigated spectroscopicallyusing both intact tissues and their ether extracts. The pigment(s) contained in C. pepo and C. maxima was inferred to be "protochlorophyll"and/or Mg vinyl pheoporphyrin a5 which are indistinguishablefrom each other by mere spectroscopic observations. The coatsof C. moschata were found to contain Mg-free vinyl pheoporphyrina5 which has so far been reported to exist only in some Chlorellamutants. The spectra of these pigments in intact tissues wereremarkably different from those of the ether extracts, indicatingthe profound difference in their physical states in vitro andin vivo. 测定了4种文蛤属贝类的15个个体的COI基因序列,并从GenBank下载了短文蛤 (M. petechialis)的相应序列。比对后的序列长度为574 bp,包括93个简约信息位点,A、T、C和G的平均含量分别为21.15%、44.71%、14.05%和20.09%。通过对序列的分析,共定义了12个单倍型:文蛤 (M. meretrix) 4个,斧文蛤 (M. lamarckii) 2个,丽文蛤 (M. lusoria) 3个,琴文蛤 (M. lyrata) 1个,短文蛤2个。以青蛤(Cylina sinensis)为外群,用MP法和贝叶斯法构建系统树。结果显示,短文蛤、丽文蛤和文蛤为亲缘关系较近的物种, 支持短文蛤和丽文蛤为文蛤的同物异名的观点。  相似文献

Photosynthetic electron transfers through the water-solubleperipheral membrane proteins of plastocyanin and cytochromec2, were studied in spinach chloroplasts and the photosyntheticbacterium Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides. In spinach chloroplasts,the rate of flash-induced oxidation of cytochrome f was highlydependent on the salt concentration in the suspending medium.The maximum rate with a half time of 200 µs was observedin the presence of 50 mas KCl or 5 mM MgCl2. The salt effectwas similar to that on the reaction rate between P700 in thylakoidfragments and externally added plastocyanin. On the other hand,in intact cells of R. sphaeroides, in which cytochrome c2 islocated in the periplasmic space exposed to the outer ionicenvironment, the rate of cytochrome c1 oxidation via cytochromec2 was almost independent of salt concentration. This independencewas a contrast to the strong dependence on salt concentrationof reactions between isolated reaction centers and cytochromec2 These results suggest that plastocyanin reacts collisionallywith the photosystem I reaction center and cytochrome b6f complexin a manner that is controlled by the surface electrostaticpotential. Cytochrome b561 from Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides had cytochromec (c2) oxidase activity and a pH optimum at 6.0 for this activity.The activity was affected by the ionic strength of the reactionmixture. The apparent Km and maximal velocity (Vmax) valuesin the absence of addea salts were 14 µM and 120 nmoloxidized per min per mg protein for horse heart cytochrome c.Reduced horse heart cytochrome c was reoxidized in first-orderkinetics by this cytochrome b561. The specific activity was0.7 s–1 per mg protein at 20°C at the concentrationof 30 µMM cytochrome c. Activity was inhibited by KCN and NaN3, but not by antimycin.The addition of a low concentration of KCN to the cytochromeb561 produced a change in the absorption spectrum, evidencethat KCN interacts with the heme moiety of cytochrome b561.Results of this and preceeding studies show that the cytochromeoxidase (cytochrome "o") described earlier (Sasaki et al. 1970)is cytochrome b561. Fronds of marine algae, especially green alga, Codium latum,and red alga, Porphyra tenera, evolved a quantity of ethylenewhen IAA was exogenously applied, while brown alga, Padina arborescens,evolved only a little. Propionic acid, when added together withIAA, noticeably enhanced IAA-induced ethylene evolution in P.tenera and P. arborescens. This evolution was also enhancedby added acrylic acid in P. arborescens but not in P. tenera.It was promoted by methionine, though only at a high concentration(0.1 M), in P. tenera but not in P. arborescens. The rate ofethylene evolution was highest at 12?C among the incubationtemperatures tested of 5, 12 and 15?C. To clarify the way in which the light available for growth affectsrespiration in leaves of sun and shade plants, we examined therespiratory properties of mature leaves of Spinacia oleraceaL., a sun species, and of Alocasia macrorrhiza (L.) G. Don.,a shade species, that had been grown at various irradiances.In leaves of S. oleracea, the respiratory rates, on a dry massbasis, decreased with time during the night, and the higherwas the growth irradiance during the day, the higher was therespiratory rate. The marked decreases in the respiratory rateduring the night were accompanied by decreases in the concentrationof carbohydrates in the leaves. By contrast, the respiratoryrates of leaves of A. macrorrhiza were virtually constant throughoutthe night and the absolute rates were lower than those of S.oleracea even though the absolute value of the concentrationof carbohydrates and its decrease at night resembled to thosein S. oleracea. The maximum activities of respiratory enzymeswere also similar to those in S. oleracea. However, the leavesof A. macrorrhiza contained less soluble protein than thoseof S. oleracea. These results suggest that, in S. oleracea,the concentration of carbohydrates might determine the respiratoryrate while such is not the case in A. macrorrhiza.
