Abstract. 1. Life tables were constructed for natural populations of a cicada. Mogannia minuta , during an outbreak in sugarcane fields at Okinawa to determine possible reasons for the outbreak.
2. The highest mortality during the life cycle was during the beginning of the nymphal stage, and was mainly due to predation by ants.
3. The estimated rate of natural increase based on a survivorship—fecundity schedule in sugarcane fields was near unity, but during the increasing period the rate was estimated to be substantially higher than unity.
4. The rate of natural increase in Miscanthus -grassland was slightly negative, suggesting that the grassland population was maintained by immigration of adults from sugarcane fields.

A five-year study on the microgeographical distribution pattern of a sugarcane cicada, Mogannia minuta (=iwasakii), in the Island of Okinawa revealed that the trapezoid type distribution was an unique feature of the distribution of this species. The rate of expansion of the distribution range was remarkably small despite the continuous occurrence of sugarcane plants. These facts can be explained well by the theory of escape. That is, the epidemic cicada populations should be free from predation pressure in the infested area, but those in peripheral zones could be eradicated by predators. The possible role of regulatory factor(s) which suppress further increase in the density in the infested area was suggested.  相似文献

‘Predator-foolhardiness’ (Lloyd andDybas , 1966b) in an epidemic population of the sugarcane cicada, Mogannia minuta was tested by counting the number of successful and failed trials of hand-capturing of adults in the centre and periphery of a heavily infested area. Males frequently failed to escape from capture in the outbreak area but they did not in the peripheral zone. Females could escape well irrespective of the density. It was considered that the ‘predator-foolhardiness’ of males is not due to genetic differentiation through the process of outbreak but to the effect of massive chorus on the escape behaviour.  相似文献

The yellow protein of the takeout family (YPT) controls the development of yellow body color in the desert locust. This study focused on two aspects related to YPT in the locust. We first examined the expression pattern of YPT during nymphal stages because yellowing was not obvious during the early instars. YPT expression levels were extremely low in the second and third instars compared with the last two nymphal instars. Warm rearing temperature and juvenile hormone (JH) injection, which stimulated YPT expression in the late instars, had little effect in the second instar, suggesting that YPT expression during the early instars was suppressed and could not be stimulated by either of these factors. We also investigated delayed yellowing in fasting male adults, under the hypothesis that fasting decreased the JH titers and delayed the onset of YPT expression. Yellowing was delayed in fasting adults compared with well‐fed adults and YPT expression was stimulated by JH injections at Day 15. However, we failed to obtain evidence that fasting significantly influenced the expression levels of YPT and the JH early‐inducible gene Krüppel homolog 1 at Days 15 and 20 post‐adult emergence. Results suggest that a YPT‐independent mechanism possibly induces delayed yellowing in fasting males.  相似文献

Abstract

Cicada emergence skins in a subalpine shrub grassland have been sampled during 1969–75 to determine the abundance and spatial distributions of nymphs feeding on plant roots. A guild of six cicada species is primarily associated with two forms of vegetation: shrubs (Dracophyllum and Cassinia) and tall tussock (Chionochloa). Skin locations were mapped relative to dominant vegetation species, litter zones, and soil and rock pavements over a range of aspects, altitudes, and vegetation types, and sampling methods were scaled at four levels: the locality, plot, quadrat, and individual plant. There were significant differences in skin counts over four years, and different measures of mean skin densities are given for the four sampling scales. The two primary vegetation types had cumulative 1969–72 mean densities of 5.2 ± 4.0 and 12.9 ± 10.0 skins/quadrat (2.3 m2) , and the 1969–72 mean productivities of the upper 25% of quadrats (adjusted for percent ground cover) were, respectively, 5.5 and 35.5 skins/m2. These productivities are believed to be conservative estimates of the maturing nymph numbers per individual host plant over the span of one cicada generation. Over a 17-year span, such productivities lie within the upper range of mean densities recorded for 17-year periodical cicadas in the United States. As the dominant subalpine vegetation species are very slow-growing,it is suggested that high densities of nymphs feeding on root sap may affect plant vitality, although 1971/1987 comparisons of vitality in 52 Chionochloa tussocks could not positively demonstrate a correlation across all data. Skin dispersion analyses indicated significant levels of patchiness, in agreement with other nymphal studies and with known cicada oviposition behaviour. No single dispersion model fitted the data comprehensively, and it is suggested that a gradual shifting of the centres of cicada aggregation may occur over a cumulative period of several generations.  相似文献

The grapevine cicada, Cicadatra alhageos (Kolenati) (Hemiptera: Cicadidae), is a key pest of grapevine (Vitis spp., Vitaceae) in the Middle East. The main damage is caused by nymphs that feed on root sap, and adults that oviposit on branches. As males produce sound to attract females, one of the control methods can be disruption of sexual communication. Disruptive effects of acoustic playbacks on singing males were studied. Signals (0.5–10 kHz) were broadcast to disrupt male calling behavior. Playback of acoustic signals interrupted male sexual signalling. To reduce female oviposition behavior in the field, an experiment was conducted based on a completely randomized design with two treatments (control vs. acoustic broadcasting) and four replications over a period of 3 years. Playback of disruption signals in the field reduced female oviposition on grapevine branches that were close to the signal source. Therefore, application of acoustic stimuli may be an effective and low‐cost control method against grapevine cicada.  相似文献

A selection of the 10% lightest and 10% heaviest males and females of a population of individually weighed Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Neumann adults was made in two experiments. The offspring of homologous pairs were followed until the next adult stage (light x light, control x control and heavy x heavy). The engorged nymphal weights, unfed adult weights, engorged female weights of the parents, egg mass weights, egg weights, larval scutal lengths, engorged larval weights, unfed nymphal weights, engorged nymphal weights and adult weights of the progeny were determined. No significant differences could be demonstrated between the two lines for egg weight, larval scutal length, engorged larval weight and unfed nymphal weight. Significant differences were found between the egg masses, engorged nymphal weights and adult weights of the two lines. The heritability coefficients of body weight determined from adult to adult were 0.14 and 0.10, respectively, during the first and second experiments. Considering females and males separately, the coefficients were 0.10 and 0.18 during the frist experiment and 0.12 and 0.09 during the repeat experiment respectively.  相似文献

The relative fitness rule states that parasitoid females should adopt risk‐prone reproductive behaviours when expecting low reproductive success. Temperature influences the reproductive success of insects by affecting their basal metabolic rate during development, their egg load at emergence, and their life expectancy as adults. Using an aphid–parasitoid model system, we investigated the influence of developmental and adult temperature on the risk‐sensitive decision‐making of females. We considered the use of a low‐quality host nymphal instar by the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi to be a risk‐prone behaviour. Immature females were reared at 12, 20 or 28 °C and had access to the four nymphal instars of the potato aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae for oviposition at one of these temperatures. Host selection behaviour was continuously recorded during exploitation of an aphid patch. We observed that warm‐developed females and parasitoids foraging at high temperature attacked low‐quality hosts more frequently than females from other treatments. These results support the hypothesis that a decrease in expected parasitoid reproductive success resulted in risk‐prone behaviours. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence suggesting that temperature influences host stage selection and risk‐sensitive making decision in parasitoids, and the present study is the first to support the relative fitness rule. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, ●●, ●●–●●.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Periodical cicadas occur widely in deciduous forests of eastern North America and represent the largest insect emergences in the world. Their effects on forest community dynamics, via oviposition damage and root feeding, are potentially great but not well understood. If tree species vary in their susceptibility to cicada oviposition and root colonization, then periodical cicadas may affect ecological interactions among tree species and forest composition. 2. We measured oviposition damage on 63 tree species at 52 sites in southern Indiana, U.S.A. for two broods of periodical cicadas. We compared oviposition damage among different sites, habitats, and tree species. We also measured cicada emergence rates in mature and successional forest habitats and from beneath different tree species. 3. Certain tree species received significantly more oviposition damage than others, and the most and least damaged species were consistent between the two broods. For some species, oviposition damage varied between mature and successional sites. Despite the differences in oviposition rates among species, there was no difference in emergence rates from beneath different tree species, suggesting that initial differences in cicada density among tree species are not maintained through the nymphal life cycle. 4. Cicadas oviposited more at successional sites, but emerged more in mature forest stands, suggesting that successive generations of cicadas represent a shifting mosaic between forests of different ages. As tree species consistently vary in their susceptibility to oviposition damage, periodical cicadas could alter local competitive interactions and therefore affect forest dynamics.  相似文献

Abstract The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is a wing-dimorphic species, which causes globally important agricultural losses. In this present study, we compared the biochemical basis of wing polymorphism in A. gossypii with respect to trade-off of energy resources, including glycogen, trehalose, lipids (total lipid, triglyceride and phospholipid), free fatty acids, and soluble protein between dispersal and reproduction morphs during the wing-bud nymph and adulthood. Total lipid, triglyceride and free fatty acids were significantly higher in winged versus wingless morphs at 12 h of adulthood, the period during which alates are able to fly. By contrast, the wingless morph contained more glycogen than the winged morph from the 4th nymphal stage to adulthood. Trehalose content in the wingless morph was also higher than that in the winged morph during the 3rd and 4th nymphal stages, but vice versa at 12 h of adulthood. Finally, soluble protein content increased from nymphs to adults and was higher during adulthood in aptera versus alate. Whole-body water content in 12-h adults was significantly higher in apterae than that in alatae. These results indicate significant physiological differences between morphs related to specialization for flight.  相似文献

Vertical transmission of symbionts in insects is critical to persistence of symbioses across host generations. The key time point and related cellular/molecular mechanisms underlying the transmission in most insects remain unclear. Here, we reveal that in the bacteriome–endosymbiont system of the cicada Meimuna mongolica, the obligate symbiont Candidatus Sulcia muelleri (hereafter Sulcia) proliferates and migrates to the ovaries mainly after the adult emergence of cicadas. Sulcia cells swell to approximately twice their previous size with the outer membrane changed to be more irregular during this process. Almost all the Sulcia genes involved in biosynthesis of essential amino acids, heat shock protein, energy metabolism, DNA replication and repair and protein export were highly expressed in all life stages of cicadas. Among which, genes involved in DNA replication and synthesis of leucine and arginine were upregulated in the newly emerged adults relative to fifth-instar nymphs. Signal transduction is the pronounced function exhibited in both Sulcia and the cicada bacteriomes in newly emerged adults. The results suggest host sensing of arginine and leucine integrate Sulcia's output of host-EAAs into mTORC1 signalling. This study highlights the importance of signalling pathways in regulating the host/symbiont interaction and symbiont transmission in sap-feeding auchenorrhynchous insects.  相似文献

Abstract:  The potential of azadirachtin as an insect growth regulator was evaluated in Nezara viridula L. by applying different doses to fifth instar nymphs. At doses of 200–500 ng per insect almost all the individuals died during moulting to adults and the survivors showed a great number of nymphal characteristics, and also died very soon after. At lower doses, from 2 to 50 ng per insect, approximately 50% of the adults seemed normal. No effect was observed during the last nymphal instar, even at the highest dose applied. The fertility and fecundity of adults, males and females, developing from nymphs treated with different low doses of azadirachtin were also studied. When azadirachtin was applied at 20 ng per insect on fifth instar nymphs, females developing from these nymphs showed a conspicuous reduction of fecundity. This same effect was evident when untreated females mated with males obtained from treated nymphs. Finally, azadirachtin applied at 1  μ g/cm2 to the oviposition surface showed a remarkable oviposition repellency.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of strain Beauveria bassiana (LPSC 1067) on nymphal development time, fecundity and adult survival in Dichroplus maculipennis and Ronderosia bergi under laboratory conditions. It was observed that infection with 1×103 conidia/ml altered nymphal development time, fecundity and adult survival in both species. Mortality of D. maculipennis during third through the last instar (sixth) was significantly higher among treated nymphs (66±3.8%) than in controls (15±1.7%). Similarly, mortality in R. bergi during third through the last instar (fifth) was higher in treated nymphs (71±2.8%) than in controls (19±1.5%). Nymphal development times of both infected D. maculipennis and R. bergi were longer than controls. On the other hand, among survivors of both the species, control adults lived longer than infected adults. Finally, control grasshoppers of both species were much more successful reproductively than infected grasshoppers.  相似文献

1. Female eugenia psyllids Trioza eugeniae oviposit on the margins of expanding young Syzygium paniculatum leaves. The developing nymphs, feeding within pit‐shaped galls on the leaves, cause the leaves to become curled and deformed. The degree of leaf curling was correlated positively with densities of T. eugeniae nymphs. 2. High relative humidity increased persistence of nymphs on leaves at low insect densities, but persistence did not differ between high or low relative humidity conditions when nymphal densities were high and leaves were greatly curled. 3. Direct insolation increased nymphal mortality. Nymphs on the abaxial leaf surface in the direct sun had lower mortality than similarly exposed nymphs on the adaxial leaf surface. 4. Field populations showed high preference for abaxial leaf surfaces and a stronger preference for shaded adaxial surfaces than for exposed adaxial surfaces. 5. Adverse environmental conditions of direct insolation and low relative humidity may be mitigated by leaf curl associated with moderate populations, however competition at high nymphal density supersedes any potential benefit arising from leaf curling and has a negative effect on nymphal survival.  相似文献

Changes in biliverdin-binding cyanoprotein content in whole body and tissue extracts during development of nymphal and adult (non-diapause) bean bugs, Riptortus clavatus were analyzed by rocket immunoelectrophoresis (RIE). RIE using anti-CPegg serum can be used to determine the content of CP-A (Cp-1, 2 and 3) and CP-B (CP-4) separately. During the nymphal stage CP content of whole body changes cyclically in each instar. In the first nymphal instar, CPegg is the main CP which disappears during the first-second instar ecdysis. In nymphal bugs from the 2nd to 4th instars only CP-B (CP-4) is detected, and at the beginning of each instar the CP content is very low but increases toward the next ecdysis, after which CP decreases and disappears very rapidly. In the 5th nymphal instar, CP-B is the major CP but CP-A (CP-1, 2 and 3) is also detected. These changes in whole body CP content of 5th instar nymphs are observed in both females and males. The content of total CPs in the 5th instar nymph reaches about 1000 μg in the whole insect. During nymphal-adult ecdysis, nymphal CPs decrease and disappear at day 2 after emergence. In female adults CP-A (CP-1 only) increases rapidly after day 4 of adult emergence, while no CP is detected in male adults. In females CPs were detected only in the fat body, hemolymph and ovary. In the mid-5th-instar nymphs, CPs (CP-A and B) are mainly distributed in the hemolymph. CPs in the Hemolymph decrease during nymphal-adult ecdysis, whereas they increase in the fat body. CPs disappear from both the hemolymph and fat body by 2 days after ecdysis. Subsequently in the adult stage only CP-A increases again in the fat body and ovary. By tracer experiments using [35S]-methionine, the fat body was shown to be the site of CP synthesis. CP-A and B synthetic activity was detected in nymphal females whereas, only CP-A synthesis was observed in adult females, while no CP synthesis was seen in adult males.  相似文献

The membrane properties of dark-adapted green sensitive photoreceptors of adult and nymphal desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) were investigated in situ with single electrode (discontinuous) current and voltage clamp techniques. The photoreceptors had a resting potential of about -70 mV. The membrane rectified strongly in response to depolarizing current pulses at and above the resting potential. Two outward currents could be distinguished on the basis of different kinetics. The first, a transient current, was inactivating between-40 mV and -100 mV, and activated above -90 mV. The second, a sustained current had a similar activation range. The inactivating current could be blocked by application of 50 mM TEA into the retinal extracellular space. Both currents were expressed in nymphal photoreceptors already in the 1st instar larva and have similar properties as in the adults, although the behaviour of adults and nymphs is different. The conductances underlying these currents could be shown to modify the frequency response of the photoreceptor membrane.The work was started in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.  相似文献

The planthopper Delphacodes kuscheli is the main vector of Mal de Río Cuarto virus in Argentina, disease that severely affects maize production. In this study, we investigated the effects of heat stress on fitness traits and on the number of its obligate yeast‐like symbionts (YLS). The exposition of newly‐hatched nymphs to 35°C for 3 days, a well‐known procedure used to reduce the number of YLS in planthoppers, was applied. To compare different fitness components between control and heat‐treated insects, we estimated nymphal instars development time, nymphal survival, adult body length, longevity, fecundity and fertility. Also, correlates of fitness, as proportion of sexes and wing forms of the emerging adults, were evaluated. In heat‐treated group, the nymphal developmental time increased due to an increase in the fifth instar duration, and the nymphal survival, body length of adults and fecundity were reduced when compared to control. There was a significant association between treatments (control and heat‐treated insects) and wing morphs. The heat treatment successfully reduced the number of YLS in third instar nymphs of D. kuscheli. Our results revealed the negative effect of heat stress on development, survival and reproduction of D. kuscheli and on the load of its YLS endosymbionts suggesting that YLS could play a crucial role in the development and reproduction of these planthoppers.  相似文献

Abstract The virulence change and damage characteristics of brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stal, populations collected from Guangxi, Yunnan and Zhejiang Provinces were studied by using various resistant rice varieties. The results indicated that the Zhejiang population could successfully infest varieties IR26 and Mudgo, showing the characters of BPH biotype 2 after 1989. The Guangxi population, however, could adapt the resistant varieties IR26, Mudgo and ASD7 after 1991. In 1997, the nymphal survival indices of Guangxi and Yunnan populations on Rathu Heenati (Bph3) were up to 70. 9 and 66. 7 respectively. This may imply that the BPH populations in Guangxi and Yunnan have shifted into a new biotype. In free-choice test, there was obvious difference in the feeding preference of nymphs and adults of Zhejiang population, the adult preferred to feeding on resistant variety IR26 and the nymphs chose the hosts randomly. Under 26 C and L12: D12, the nymphal duration of Zhejiang population was the longest in the three tested populations. For Guangxi population, the nymphal duration on ASD7 was significantly longer than on TN1, although it could infest resistant variety ASD7. The nymphal survival rate of Zhejiang population fed on IR26 was higher than those fed on TN1 and ASD7. On varieties IR26 and ASD7, an obviously higher nymphal survival rate was observed in Yunnan population as compared to those of Zhejiang and Guangxi populations. These results indicate that difference in virulence and damage characteristics could be found in different geographical populations of BPH.  相似文献

Pristhesancus plagipennis (Walker) is a predator of larvae and nymphs of many pestiferous insects for which natural enemies are not commercially available. This paper describes a containerized mass-rearing method for P. plagipennis using hot water-killed larvae of Tenebrio molitor (L.) and Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). In addition, the effect of P. plagipennis density during nymphal rearing and adult oviposition was investigated. The rearing method minimizes P. plagipennis cannibalism, avoids the need for live insect prey, and is space and labor efficient. Larvae of the yellow mealworm, T. molitor, were the most suitable prey for minimizing nymphal development time and mortality while producing insects with the highest body weight. When reared on a diet of T. molitor, the optimum rearing density was 20–27 nymphs per 5-liter container. This rearing density minimized nymphal mortality to 16–22%. The optimum density for oviposition was 16 adults per 5-liter container, which provided the best compromise between egg production and space utilization.  相似文献
