A hypothetical phylogeny is presented for the genus Cryptocoryne (Araceae, Cryptocoryninae). This scheme is based on both geographical and cytological data. Therefore the geography of S. E. Asia, the distribution of the various base numbers and the possible relationships between the base numbers are discussed. In the resulting phylogeny the various base numbers of Cryptocoryne (and the one of Lagenandra) are thought to have been derived from a hypothetical primary base number x1=9. As a consequence of the scheme, Cryptocoryne is assumed to have a diphyletic character.  相似文献

Depending on the species, Cryptocoryne plants grow in different biotopes, viz. spring, river, dark forest, and tree-savanna. The species of Lagenandra are exclusively found in river biotopes. The chromosome numbers found in this study corroborate the numbers previously recorded. Some variation in respect to the morphology of the inflorescence of C. wendtii de Wit and L. ovata (L.) Thwaites is described. A map presenting the distribution of the of Cryptocoryne with their chromosome numbers is included.
The existing populations of Cryptocoryne on Sri Lanka should be protected from further exploitation by plant collectors.  相似文献

The new speciesH. lucens Bogner differs fromH. truncatum (M. Hotta)Bogner etNicolson: The leaf blades are narrower, the spadix is adnate to the spathe for two third of its length, i.e. with all of its female and half of its male part. The latter has (fertile) stamens only on its front and staminodes on its back side. Further staminodes occur between the male and female flowers.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers for 38 species of Cryptocoryne are reported, 16 of which have not been reported earlier. About 90% of the species of Cryptocoryne have now been investigated cytologically. On the basis of chromosome numbers, morphology, and distribution, it is possible to distinguish some 24 groups within the species investigated. The chromosome numbers represent a heteroploid series which is based on the (secondary) base numbers 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, and 18. Evidence is given that 2n = 36 is the more primitive one. Evolution on the chromosome level has most likely gone in the direction of a reduction in numbers. Two new species, Cryptocoryne amicorum De Wit & N. Jacobsen and C. keei N. Jacobsen, are described.  相似文献

SEM studies of the spathe structures in the two closely related genera Cryptocoryne and Lagenandra show differences between the inner and outer surfaces, as well as in cell structures in the various parts of the spathe. The cell structure reveals patterns mat makes it possible to depict homologous structures of the spathe, even though the spathes of the two genera look different. The basal part of the kettle has a mucilage covering of the cells, interpreted as a hitherto unnoticed food source. The cells of the inner surface of the kettle and tube have downward pointing trichomes. On the second day of flowering these collapse and sink into the cell lumen, which is suggested to create a unique lattice-like structure that enables the insects to climb out of the kettle and tube. The cell structure of the flap shows that it is a prolongation and continuation of the spathe tube margin.  相似文献

Cryptocoryne cordata var. cordata (2n = 34) is an aquatic plant species distributed from the southern part of Peninsular Thailand through the Malay Peninsula. It propagates both sexually and asexually via stolons. The current study is aimed at developing nuclear microsatellite markers for the species using next generation sequencing (Roche 454 pyrosequencing) from genomic DNA. A total of 41,653 reads was generated, of which 3636 fragments contained at least one repeat motif. Seventy two primer sets in the flanking region of dinucleotide, trinucleotide and tetranucleotides repeat motifs were designed and tested for efficiency in polymerase chain reaction amplification. Using these primer sets, 11 new microsatellite marker loci were successfully amplified with unambiguous polymorphic alleles exhibited across 30 individuals examined. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 6, while observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.8190 to 1.0000 and 0.5401 to 0.7548, respectively. Genotype frequencies at all loci departed significantly from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Linkage disequilibrium was not detected between any pair of loci. Cross-species amplification was successful across a panel of ten Cryptocoryne species. The markers described in this study will be useful for evaluating genetic diversity within and between populations, levels of gene flow, and the population dynamics of clones. They will be of further value in the development of effective conservation programs for Cryptocoryne species.  相似文献

Two taxonomically undescribed Colocasiomyia species were discovered from inflorescences of Alocasia macrorrhizos in Kota Kinabalu City, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. The aims of this study were to investigate the reproductive ecology of the flies and the plant, ascertain the importance of the flies as pollinators and examine the intimate association between flowering events and life history of the flies. We conducted sampling, observations and field pollination experiments. The flies were attracted by the odour of female‐phase inflorescences in the early morning on the first day of anthesis. They fed, mated and oviposited in the inflorescences for 1 day. On the second day, the flies, covered with pollen grains, left the male‐phase inflorescences for the next female‐phase inflorescences. The immature forms of both fly species hatched, developed and pupated within the infructescences without damaging the fruits, and developed adults emerged when the mature infructescences dehisced. The flowering events and fly behaviours were well synchronized. In field pollination experiments, inflorescences bagged with a fine mesh (insect exclusion) produced almost no fruits, whereas those bagged with a coarse mesh (bee exclusion) produced as many fruits as the open‐pollinated controls. These results indicate that these flies are the most efficient and specialised pollinators for their host, A. macrorrhizos. These flies, in return, depend on A. macrorrhizos for food and habitat through most of their life cycle. This study provides a deeper insight into the less recognised, highly intimate pollination mutualism between Araceae plants and Colocasiomyia flies.  相似文献

The Bornean species of Callicarpa (Lamiaceae) are revised. Twenty three species are recognized: of these, four are described as new ( C. argentii , C. coriacea , C. subaequalis and C. teneriflora ) and two are raised to species level from variety ( C. endertii and C. hispida ). All 23 species described are assessed for World Conservation Union (IUCN) conservation status. Distribution maps and an identification key are provided. The historic confusion between the genera Geunsia and Callicarpa is discussed. Geunsia is included as a synonym of Callicarpa based on the examination of morphological characters and molecular data. Geunsia is suggested to be nested within Callicarpa based on phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS), partial matK and trnD‐T sequences of 30 taxa using maximum parsimony. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 416–455.  相似文献

In this study, the flowering mechanisms and pollination strategies of seven species of the highly diverse genus Homalomena (Araceae) were investigated in native populations of West Sarawak, Borneo. The floral scent compositions were also recorded for six of these species. The selected taxa belong to three out of four complexes of the section Cyrtocladon (Hanneae, Giamensis and Borneensis). The species belonging to the Hanneae complex exhibited longer anthesis (53–62 h) than those of the Giamensis and Borneensis complexes (ca. 30 h). Species belonging to the Hanneae complex underwent two floral scent emission events in consecutive days, during the pistillate and staminate phases of anthesis. In species belonging to the Giamensis and Borneensis complexes, floral scent emission was only evident to the human nose during the pistillate phase. A total of 33 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected in floral scent analyses of species belonging to the Hanneae complex, whereas 26 VOCs were found in samples of those belonging to the Giamensis complex. The floral scent blends contained uncommon compounds in high concentration, which could ensure pollinator discrimination. Our observations indicate that scarab beetles (Parastasia gestroi and P. nigripennis; Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae) are the pollinators of the investigated species of Homalomena, with Chaloenus schawalleri (Chrysomelidae, Galeuricinae) acting as a secondary pollinator. The pollinators utilise the inflorescence for food, mating opportunities and safe mating arena as rewards. Flower‐breeding flies (Colocasiomyia nigricauda and C. aff. heterodonta; Diptera, Drosophilidae) and terrestrial hydrophilid beetles (Cycreon sp.; Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) were also frequently recovered from inflorescences belonging to all studied species (except H. velutipedunculata), but they probably do not act as efficient pollinators. Future studies should investigate the post‐mating isolating barriers among syntopically co‐flowering Homalomena sharing the same visiting insects.  相似文献

Sweet flag,Acorus calamus, one of the few extratropical members of the Araceae, is a semi-aquatic component of aquatic habitats throughout the temperate to sub-temperate regions of Eurasia and the Americas. The plant has a rich ethnobotanical history dating back possibly to the time of Moses in the Old Testament of the Bible and in early Greek and Roman medicine. Sweet flag, thought to be indigenous to India and spread along trade routes, has been valued for its rhizome and fragrant oils which have been used medicinally, in alcoholic beverages, as a fragrant essence in perfumes and oils, and for insecticidal properties. Current research investigates sweet flag’s value as an insecticidal, antibacterial and antifungal agent. This paper is a comprehensive survey of the past, present and future uses of sweet flag.  相似文献

The spadix of Montrichardia arborescens contains unisexual flowers without a perianth. The pistillate flowers are located in the basal portion of the inflorescence, and the staminate flowers are located in the apical portion. There is a narrow :zone between male flowers and female flowers consisting of atypical flowers. The portion of the atypical flowers facing the staminate zone exhibits staminate characters (stamens), and the portion facing the pistillate zone has an aborted gynoecium. The floral development of Montrichurdia is compared with that of Philodendron and a new interpretation of the morphology of atypical flowers of Montrichardia is proposed. Ontogenetic evidence supports relationships with Philodendron rather than Cercestis. 2001 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Morphological, anatomical, and histochemical aspects of zygotic embryogenesis by Anthurium andraeanum Lind. were investigated from 4 to 24 wk postpollination. Anatomical features were correlated with morphology of the spadix and capacity of embryos to germinate in vitro. Development from a single-cell zygote to fully mature seed takes 24 wk. The suspensor was two ranked and obvious during the early stages of embryogeny. It was apparent by week 8, substantial until week 14, and diminished rapidly until its absence by week 22. Differentiation of the shoot apex, cotyledon, and protoderm occurs at 14 wk. The embryo starts to derive nutrition from the endosperm at this time, and germination of cultured ovules reached 56%. By 20 wk the shoot apex had visible leaf primordia and the root apex was clearly defined. The cotyledon was well developed and surrounded the shoot tip. The storage of protein and starch was at its greatest in the endosperm and embryo. Furthermore, 100% germination of cultured ovules and embryos occurred at 20 wk and thereafter. Fully mature embryos at 24 wk are green and contain protoxylem elements.  相似文献

Pollination ecology of Arum italicum (Araceae)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The pollination ecology of Arum italicum was studied in south-western France. This plant attracts olfactory dung-breeding flies through deceit. These insects are principally represented by Diptera, all belonging to saprophyte families. The volatilization of the odouriferous compounds, responsible for their attraction, is achieved through the production of heat by the appendix. The insects are trapped for 24 h in order to participate in both sexual phases of the protogynous inflorescence. The male flowers produce three heat events during flowering. These peaks of heat seem to be involved in the spathe movements, since they occur during the opening of the inflorescence and the liberation of the insects. The last male heat event may be linked with the liberation of pollen and its dispersion by stimulating trapped flies. According to their frequency and pollen-load, two Psychoda species appear to be the most efficient pollinators ( P. crassipenis and P. pusilla ). Nevertheless, each of the other attracted species could play a significant role under different spatio-temporal conditions. Experiments on self-pollination have shown that obligate cross-pollination is necessary for A. italicum to set seeds. Moreover, hand- and natural-pollinated plants showed similarly high abortion frequencies suggesting that seed set may be more constrained by resources rather than by pollination limitation.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 205–214.

Chromosome numbers are determined from 37 populations attributed to 22 taxa of JapaneseArisaema. Of them, chromosome numbers ofA. limbatum var.conspicuum (2n=26),A. minus (2n=26),A. nambae (2n=28) andA. seppikoense (2n=26) are determined for the first time. New chromosome numbers, 2n=26, are reported forA. aequinoctiale, A. limbatum, A. stenophyllum, A. undulatifolium andA. yoshinagae. Three modes of basic chromosome numbers,x=14,x=13 andx=12, occur in JapaneseArisaema. Precise karyotypic comparisons of 20 taxa reveal that taxa withx=14 andx=13 share 26 major chromosome arms and have an obvious chromosomal relationship. One of two submeta-centric chromosomes inx=13 corresponds to two telo-centric chromosomes inx=14. InA. ternatipartitum with 2n=6x=72, ten out of 12 basic chromosomes are the most similar in size and arm ratio with larger ten chromosomes ofA. ringens among JapaneseArisaema examined. A basic chromosome number ofx=14 is the commonest in the genusArisaema and the remaining basic chromosome numbers,x=13 andx=12, seem to be derived through dysploidal reduction by translocating large segments of major arm of telo-centric chromosome onto other minor arm of telo-centric followed by loss of the remainings including a centromere, and by loss of two telo-centrics fromx=14, respectively. Some systematic problems of JapaneseArisaema are discussed based on new cytological data.Arisaema hatizyoense, A. minus andA. nambae are accepted as independent species.  相似文献
