The pollen spectra of air and surface soil samples from a rooftop (at 14 m) and from ground level (at 1.6 m) in the suburbs of Vienna (Austria) were compared. Two soil samples and two air samples were taken on four different days to account for possible differences: in winter when no pollination occurred (reference day), in spring during the main flowering of Betula (birch day), in spring/summer during the main flowering of Poaceae (grass day), and in autumn during the main flowering of Ambrosia (ragweed day). Thirty-five different pollen types were used to describe the pollen spectra. Frequencies of certain pollen types reflect a seasonal impact on both the surface soil and air samples and show a similarity between air and soil samples on most of the days. However, the seasonal impact is higher in the air samples and shows a high consistency for ground and rooftop level. Kendall’s tau correlation coefficients further substantiate the similarities of the samples especially for the pollen season days. Exceptions include the winter day when pollination was low and the air samples recorded nearly no pollen at all, and the ragweed day when Ambrosia pollen was abundant in three of four samples but not in the ground surface soil sample. Thus, (1) air and surface pollen samples record similar signals during the pollen season but not during the ragweed and winter season and (2) air and surface pollen samples show the impact of local vegetation also in pollen traps located at different heights.  相似文献

Pollen allergies affect a large part of the European population and are considered likely to increase. User feedback indicates that there are difficulties in providing proper information and valid forecasts using traditional methods of aerobiology due to a variety of factors. Allergen content, pollen loads, and pollen allergy symptoms vary per region and year. The first steps in challenging such issues have already been undertaken. A personalized pollen-related symptom forecast is thought to be a possible answer. However, attempts made thus far have not led to an improvement in daily forecasting procedures. This study describes a model that was launched in 2013 in Austria to provide the first available personal pollen information. This system includes innovative forecast models using bi-hourly pollen data, traditional pollen forecasts based on historical data, meteorological data, and recent symptom data from the patient’s hayfever diary. Furthermore, it calculates the personal symptom load in real time, in particular, the entries of the previous 5 days, to classify users. The personal pollen information was made available in Austria on the Austrian pollen information website and via a mobile pollen application, described herein for the first time. It is supposed that the inclusion of personal symptoms will lead to major improvements in pollen information concerning hay fever sufferers.  相似文献

We compared simple mathematical pollen dispersal–deposition models with Gaussian plume models. The simple mathematical models proved equal or better approximations of real world pollen dispersal–deposition. We concluded that for most standard applications, such as estimating pollen productivity or quantitative vegetation reconstructions, simple mathematical models would perform satisfactory. Such easy-to-use models may lower the threshold to employ quantitative tools to palaeoecological questions.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The sterol compositions of two oceanic and three inter-tidal zone species of annelid have been analysed by combined GC-MS techniques and the results compared with previous analyses.
  • 2.2. It was found that the oceanic annelids had more complex sterol profiles in which small quantities of 5α-stanols were present, whereas in the simpler profiles of the intertidal zone species, 5α-stanols were normally absent.
  • 3.5. It was also found that lugworm species from South Africa and South Wales contained substantially identical sterol compositions.

TwoChenopodium species (C. album L.,C. suecicum J. Murr) were grown under field conditions with sugar beet to assess the weed-caused crop loss, and with spring wheat in a replacement series experiment. The weeds strongly reduced the growth of sugar beet. Dew's competition indexes for the regressions of sugar beet yield on weed density were 6.81 and 3.78 forC. suecicum andC. album respectively. On the other hand, the yield of spring wheat was not affected by the twoChenopodium species owing to early shading of the weeds by the faster growing crop stand.  相似文献

Sterols and alcohols isolated from a collection of industrially important fresh-water green algaeChlorella kessleri, Scenedesmus acuminatus, S. acutus andS. acutus var.Tomasclli cultivated heterotrophically or autotrophically under pilot plant conditions, were identified and quantified by gas chromatography — mass spectrometry. Previsously demonstrated sterols with double bonds in position 5 and 7 were detected. In addition, cholesta-5,7,22-trien-3 β-oI that had not yet been described in green algae was found inS. acutus. Alcohols were found only inC. kessleri cultivated under heterotrophic conditions. Some saturated and unsaturated alcohols were detected for the first time in green algae.  相似文献

A test of Allan's (1978) hypothesis about differential drift abundance of mayflies of the genus Baetis between night and day, and the size of larvae was performed at a mountain stream in Idaho. Palisades Creek, Idaho, contains a different species of mayfly, B. tricaudatus, and vertebrate predator, Salmo clarki, than Cement Creek, Colorado (B. bicaudatus, and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis). Consequently it was not known if B. tricaudatus would exhibit a similar pattern as its congener in Cement Creek, with large instars tending to avoid daylight drift, as found by Allan (1978). However, similar results were observed in the present study. It appears that the earlier hypothesis may have generality for geographically distinct streams with a different vertebrate predator and mayfly prey. The existence of a similar pattern for chironomid larvae was also tested, however, no such pattern existed. This discrepency between taxa may be due to differential predation, or to inherent differences in drift abilities.  相似文献

Functional pollen is needed to successfully complete fertilization. Pollen is formed inside the anthers following a specific sequence of developmental stages, from microsporocyte meiosis to pollen release, that concerns microsporocytes/microspores and anther wall tissues. The processes involved may not be synchronous within a flower, an anther, and even a microsporangium. Asynchrony has been barely analyzed, and its biological consequences have not been yet assessed. In this review, different processes of pollen development and lifetime, stressing on the possible consequences of their differential timing on pollen performance, are summarized. Development is usually synchronized until microsporocyte meiosis I (occasionally until meiosis II). Afterwards, a period of mostly asynchronous events extends up to anther opening as regards: (1) meiosis II (sometimes); (2) microspore vacuolization and later reduction of vacuoles; (3) amylogenesis, amylolysis, and carbohydrate inter-conversion; (4) the first haploid mitosis; and (5) intine formation. Asynchrony would promote metabolic differences among developing microspores and therefore physiologically heterogeneous pollen grains within a single microsporangium. Asynchrony would increase the effect of competition for resources during development and pollen tube growth and also for water during (re)hydration on the stigma. The differences generated by developmental asynchronies may have an adaptive role since more efficient pollen grains would be selected with regard to homeostasis, desiccation tolerance, resilience, speed of (re)hydration, and germination. The performance of each pollen grain which landed onto the stigma will be the result of a series of selective steps determined by its development, physiological state at maturity, and successive environmental constrains.  相似文献

Four tetraploid potato genotypes (194.10, 199.13, 201.5, 201.12) were examined in anther culture. The androgenic responses were in general high. Cv. 199.13 contributed with the best response, varying between 0.38 and 0.55 embryoids per anther. Gellan gum or potato starch were used as gelling agents in a double-layer medium. Anthers incubated on potato starch gave a higher embryo yield in the beginning of the culture period, compared to anthers cultivated on gellan gum. The number of embryoids per anther, however, was higher on gellan gum at the end of the culture period. Anther cultures of potato were incubated in two different temperatures (20 °C and 25 °C), and the highest embryo yield was obtained in 25 °C except for genotype 201.12 where no difference was found between the two temperatures. Experiments with pollen germination in various temperatures (10 °C and 20 °C) were correlated to anther culture experiments. Also in case of pollen germination, genotype 201.12 was temperature-independent, while germination was stimulated by higher temperatures in the other genotypes.  相似文献

A qualitative and quantitative analysis of airborne pollen and spores was carried out over 2 years (from September 1987 to August 1989) in the city of León. Slides were prepared daily using a volumetric pollen trap, which was placed on the Faculty of Veterinary Science building (University of León) 12m above ground-level. Fifty-one pollen types were observed; the most important of these were: Cupressaceae during the winter,Pinus andQuercus in spring, and Poaceae, Leguminosae and Chenopodiaceae in the summer. The results also showed the existence of a rich mould spore assemblage in the atmosphere. The group of Amerospores (Penicillium, Aspergillus andCladosporium) as well as Dictyospores (Alternaria) were the most abundant;Puccinia was common in the air in August. Fluctuations in the total pollen and spores m3 of air were compared with meteorological parameters (temperature, relative humidity and rainfall). From the daily sampling of the atmosphere of León, considering the maximum and minimum temperature and duration of rainfall, the start of the pollen grain season was observed generally to coincide with a rise in temperature in the absence of rain.  相似文献

Two exo-β-glucanases (LP-ExoI, 83 kDa and LP-ExoII, 71 kDa) were extracted and partially purified from the cell wall of Lilium longiflorum pollen tubes. Both LP-ExoI and LP-ExoII hydrolyzed laminarin (1,3-β-glucan). These enzymes also exhibited some activity toward 1,3:1,4-β-glucans of Hordeum vulgare and Cetraria islandica and the 1,6-β-glucan of Umbilicaria papullosa. The pH for optimum activity for both exo-β-glucanases was 5.5. Methylation analysis of the reaction products revealed that purified LP-ExoI decreased both 1,3- and 1,4-glucosyl linkages in hemicellulosic polysaccharides isolated from the cell wall of lily pollen tubes. D-gluconolactone and nojirimycin, inhibitors of glucosidase, inhibited activities of both exo-β-glucanases, as well as growth of the lily pollen tubes. These results disclosed that the wall-bound exo-β-glucanases play an important role in the regulation of lily pollen tube growth. Received: 3 January 2000 / Revision accepted: 8 March 2000  相似文献

The structural and functional aspects of two specific centromeres, one drawn from the animal kingdom (Drosophila) and the other from the plant kingdom (maize), are compared. Both cases illustrate an epigenetic component to centromere specification. The observations of neocentromeres in Drosophila and inactive centromeres in maize constitute one line of evidence for this hypothesis. Another common feature is the divisibility of centromere function with reduced stability as the size decreases. The systems differ in that Drosophila has no common sequence repeat at all centromeres, whereas maize has a 150-bp unit present in tandem arrays together with a centromere-specific transposon, centromere retrotransposon maize, present at all primary constrictions. Aspects of centromere structure known only from one or the other system might be common to both, namely, the presence of centromere RNAs in the kinetochore as found in maize and the organization of the centromeric histone 3 in tetrameric nucleosomes.  相似文献

The growth of pollen tubes is supported by the continuous supply of secretory vesicles in the tip area. Movement and accumulation of vesicles is driven by the dynamic interplay between the actin cytoskeleton and motor proteins of the myosin family. A combination of the two protein systems is also responsible for the bidirectional movement of larger organelle classes. In contrast, the role of microtubules and microtubule-based motors is less clear and often ambiguous. Nevertheless, there is evidence which shows that the pollen tube contains a number of microtubule-based motors of the kinesin family. These motor proteins are likely to be associated with pollen tube organelles and, consequently, they have been hypothesized to participate in the distribution of organelles during pollen tube growth. Whether microtubule motor proteins take part in either the transport or positioning of organelles is not known for sure, but there is evidence for this second possibility. This review will discuss the current knowledge of microtubule-based motor proteins (including kinesins and hypothetical dyneins) and will make some hypothesis about their role in the pollen tube.  相似文献

The effects of fresh thalli, culture filtrate, water-soluble extract and dry powder of two species of macroalgae, Ulva pertusa (Chlorophyta) and Gracilaria lemaneiformis (Rhodophyta), on the growth of a bloom-forming microalga, Heterosigma akashiwo, were studied in co-culture under controlled laboratory conditions. Both fresh thalli and culture filtrate of U. pertusa and G. lemaneiformis, particularly in the form of fresh thalli, significantly inhibited microalgal growth; indeed, the microalga was completely killed during the course of the experiment. A clear concentration-dependent relationship was observed between the initial concentration of fresh thalli (either U. pertusa or G. lemaneiformis) and its inhibitory effect on H. akashiwo. Simultaneous nutrient assays showed that nitrate and phosphate were almost exhausted in G. lemaneiformis fresh thalli co-culture but remained well above nutrient limitation for microalgal growth in U. pertusa co-culture, in which the microalgal cells were completely killed. However, daily f/2 medium repletion would obviously alleviate the growth inhibition in G. lemaneiformis co-culture. Since the present study was carried out under controlled conditions, fluctuations in environmental factors (i.e., light, temperature, carbon limitation, bacterial presence and pH) were limited during the experiment. We thus concluded that allelopathy was the most likely explanation for microalgal growth inhibition in U. pertusa co-culture, while the combined roles of allelopathy and nutrient limitation were responsible for growth inhibition in G. lemaneiformis co-culture. Similarly, macroalgal water-soluble extracts and dry powders affected the co-cultured H. akashiwo greatly, with more obvious effects observed in water-soluble extract co-cultures. A dose-dependent relationship was also observed over the course of the experiment. It can be concluded that macroalgal thalli contain some bioactive compounds. The results of the present study suggest that U. pertusa and G. lemaneiformis, especially in the form of fresh thalli, effectively inhibit the growth of H. akashiwo and could thus be potential candidates for use in the control and mitigation of H. akashiwo blooms.  相似文献
