This article describes, analyzes, and interprets various cultural influences on the representational drawings of young Navajo students, in order to understand their changing cultural viewpoint. The data and drawings were gathered from two elementary art classes in one Navajo public school in northeastern Arizona, as part of an ongoing study. This information is compared to anthropological data gathered on adult Navajo drawings nearly 30 years ago, as well as to some dominant theories on child art. Data reveal students are influenced by Navajo traditional images, classroom teachers’ versions of school art, popular art images, pan‐Indian influences, and peer copying. Results reveal the persistence of traditional nature imagery, the incorporation of similar schemas and color use with mainstream children, a keen ability to render realistic images and space, and the incorporation of those American things that the Navajo regard as “good for them.” Keen drawing abilities appear at a young age among the Navajo because of the high status of the arts, traditional education through observation and demonstration, peer imitation, and male drawing competition.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

As the most traditional form of performing art in Hong Kong, Cantonese opera has accumulated rich stylistic characteristics that are shown by its practitioners but not necessarily comprehended by either insiders or outsiders of the profession. Borrowing ideas from “evolutionary musicology,” which assumes that music originated from mating and communicating behaviors, and music has been functionally deployed by men for enhancing their survival, this article puts forward the idea that many stylistic elements of Cantonese opera are products of the genre's negotiation with its performance context, where physical, cultural, and human factors play important roles in shaping the genre's stylistic characteristics. This article discusses in detail the use of audio elements such as: high-pitched falsetto singing, penetrating melodic instruments, and resonating percussions; the strategic deployment of improvisations; the use of visual elements such as “enlarged” and exaggerated gestures and on-stage movements, symbolic space, time and stage property, in terms of how such stylistic conventions and characteristics solve problems for the practitioners and further enhance the performance. As the focal attraction within a series of rituals that are held to celebrate religious events, traditional Cantonese opera often features plots with happy endings. In short, the traditional repertory of Cantonese opera has been shaped to adapt to its environment. With a selection of 35 photographs for illustration, this article concludes that one can understand the stylistic characteristics of Cantonese opera only within its performance context. Images of Cantonese opera performance can be intelligible only when they are documented meaningfully within their context.  相似文献

This article offers a comparison of the status of the “traditional” medium of oil painting or acrylic in Hong Kong SAR and in Mainland China. This issue concerns the well-known discourse about the hand as medium; a typical example of what Pierre Bourdieu would call habitus. The representation of art as something produced by the hand has been the only habitus in Euro-America for a number of centuries, and it remains so among many participants of the social field of art. The development of this habitus followed very different paths in Mainland China and in Hong Kong, thanks to very different institutions in those places. Those responsible for their establishment in the 20th century, especially educational institutions, are analyzed and provide the backdrop for the analysis of the field of art in present-day Hong Kong. New institutions and new ways for these institutions to deal with art education are now changing the field of art in Hong Kong, creating new concepts to deal with the issue of forms of art seen as respectively “traditional” and “contemporary.” In ways very different than what happens in Europe, for instance, where even media that can be seen as “traditional” like oil painting tend to belong to a single “contemporary art” habitus, Hong Kong has seen the establishment of a state of competition between two habitus seen as unrelated. This article concludes with a brief portrait of the state of struggle between these two habitus within the Hong Kong art field.  相似文献

Abstract

Results are presented from Monte Carlo simulation of hydration of guanine-uracil mispairs by 25 and 50 water molecules. The hydration shells of three mispairs formed between “normal” dioxo form of uracil (U) and three forms of guanine (“normal” amino-oxo tautomer G and two rotamers of the “rare” amino-hydroxy tautomer G*) depend on the tautomeric forms of the guanine molecule. The simulation shows the important role of hydration effects on the relative stability of the mispairs.  相似文献

The figure of woman in post‐revolutionary Iranian cinema is the site of a relentless contestation between a metaphysics of concealment and an esthetics of revelation. By concealing, Islamic metaphysics intimates a “Truth” which always awaits discovering; by revealing, the esthetics of revelation dismantles the metaphysical assumption by exposing the profane moment of its sacred claim. Iranian filmmakers must situate their art somewhere between those two categorical imperatives. However, like artists everywhere, they are not in full control of the esthetic signifiers through which they speak: they must negotiate their art through a ruthless theocratic censorship. This dialectic of power and resistance, consensus and contestation, is the premise on which the Iranian culture is defined.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

There is a growing need to develop clean, nontoxic and environmentally friendly (“green chemistry”) procedures for synthesis and assembly of nanoparticles. The use of biological organisms in this area is rapidly gaining importance due to its growing success and ease of formation of nanoparticles. Presently, the potential of bio-organisms ranges from simple prokaryotic bacterial cells to eukaryotic fungus and even live plants. In this article we have reviewed some of these biological systems, which have revolutionized the art of nano-material synthesis.  相似文献

Word responses have been used to dedde whether pictures of expressive faces or postures portray truthful expressions. Previous investigators have assumed words are used only as symbols of “meaning”. They did not appreciate the use of words as symbols of “sorting”. If one viewer calls two photographs “angry” and another viewer calls the same two photographs “happy,” the viewers may disagree in their “meanings” but they agree in their ‘sortings” both agree each photograph portrays the same expression. Sorting groups reveal how the visual system processes photographic images.  相似文献

A cult of healing through meditation that was observed in Bangkok, Thailand in 1974 is described, and the cult is interpreted in terms of two axes, the cosmological and the performative, and the dialectical, reciprocal and complementary relations between them. The various ramifications of the cosmology are discussed — the categorization of the cosmos itself as a hierarchical scheme, the relations between man and non-human forms of existence, the ideas concerning power and its manner of acquisition and use, the relation between power and restraint, etc. The epistemological basis of the cult, which attempts cure through meditation, and the features of the ritual as they contribute to its performative efficacy are highlighted. The essay concludes by suggesting that there is a single scheme (episteme) underlying religious ideas and applications of knowledge such as meditation, medicine, alchemy, and astrology.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Scholars of Japan like to point out that the Japanese are interested in tamed (miniature trees, ikebana, gardens) as opposed to wild nature, and that for the Japanese, culture and nature are not mutually exclusive concepts. Moreover, there hardly seems to be any direct relationship between the Japanese sensitivity to nature and Japanese environmental behaviour. Bearing these general assumptions in mind, this paper analyzes the changes in the relationship between the Japanese and animals through two recent movements in Japan: firefly protection and fly fishing.

This study is based on interviews and participant observation among several firefly protection groups in the Kansai area from 1989 to 1997, among fly-fishing fishermen, and in fishing cooperatives of Gifu prefecture since 1997. In order to ascertain tendencies regarding new shifts in attitudes toward animals, specific observations regarding each of these issues will be disregarded so as to deal only with the commonalities. The similarities between the movements are indeed striking. Traditionally caught by the thousands, and released in houses and gardens for people's enjoyment, fireflies play a role in linking humans with what the Japanese call “close nature.” The firefly image is also very conspicuous in poetry and art. But the firefly population declined in the 1950s, and they are now being protected through drastic legal and social policies, partly influenced by Western environmentalism. The issue of firefly protection is entangled in a criss-cross of interests involving environmental concerns, urban renewal policies and the revival of depopulated rural areas, for which the firefly has become a widely used symbol. At the same time, the movement for firefly protection is highly critical of the traditional ways of dealing with fireflies. Similarly, despite the existence of a traditional Japanese method of “fly-fishing” (tenkara), the recent fly fishing boom seems to be the result of environmental trends such as the “outdoor boom,” and the “catch and release” method.

The introduction of a new fishing technique and the emergence of a consciousness and a commitment to protect fauna and flora disrupted the complex traditional relationship between humans and certain species of animals in both cases. And in both cases, the new approach to nature provoked a strong “cultural resistance” to the loss of the specific Japanese way of dealing with animals. Like “woodpigeon hunting” in southern France, or the whaling issue in other cultural areas, these phenomena appear to be symptomatic of the opposition between tradition(al culture) and environmental concerns. Indeed, the objectification of nature that underscores environmental concern is only possible through a distancing from nature, in which people differentiate and disassociate themselves from other animals… a very “un-Japanese” idea.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Amazake is a traditional Japanese health drink. Here, we examined the effects of amazake on skin in cells and humans. Treatment with sake cake or rice koji suppressed intracellular lipid accumulation in differentiated hamster sebocytes, likely through the reduced expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPARγ) mRNA. In double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, seventeen Japanese women ingested either amazake or placebo for 4 weeks. Ingestion of the amazake decreased the sebum content compared to the placebo. The questionnaires showed improvements in “face color,” “dark circles under the eyes,” “glossy hair,” and “waking up well”, only in the amazake. In accordance with the questionnaires, additional analysis revealed the change in the L* values under the eyes was statistically increased in the amazake compared to the placebo. These results indicate that amazake may decrease sebum content in cells and humans and increase the L* values under the eyes, with some additional beneficial effects in humans.  相似文献

This article looks at Bollywood dance to explore the production of the commodified bodies of global consumer culture. It focuses on “embodiment” to examine how dominant sensibilities are altered through changes in dance training and technological innovations. I argue that analyzing the dancing body as a locus of experience and expression shifts the ground from culture as text or discourse (popular in postcolonial, poststructuralist or choreographic analysis) to embodiment of subjectivity. “Remix” is the term that describes both the new training techniques and the aesthetics of Indian dances. Since the older boundaries of high and low, classical and popular are fluid under globalization, “remix” is replacing traditional codes and aesthetic experiences associated with rasa. I draw on my fieldwork among the “background dancers” in Bollywood films to argue that as consumer culture creates the dominant mode of cultural expression in India, the only durable form of dance practice seems to be the practice of consumption.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

When considering inclusive art curriculum that accommodates all learners, including English language learners, two distinct yet inseparable issues come to mind. The first is that English language learner students can use visual language and visual literacy skills inherent in visual arts curriculum to scaffold learning in and through the arts. Second, in facilitating a sense of belonging for students whose home language and cultural aesthetic may be different from those of the dominant school culture, an authentically developed multicultural art curriculum can guide self-efficacy and inclusiveness. Both aspects of teaching art for English language learners can have the added benefits of facilitating collaborative learning opportunities and increasing worldviews for all students.  相似文献

Background

Copper oxide nanomaterials’ (NMs) are important for the critical roles of Cu as a micronutrient that its improper concentration could cause toxicity or deficiency in plant. The Nano form of CuO could amplify the effects due to special characteristic of nano materials.

Method

Treatments of 0.1, 0.5, and 2.5 μM and NM of copper with three replications were applied to plants under hydroponic conditions. Physiological parameters and expression of IRT1 and CAT genes were investigated.

Results

Copper absorption decreased according to MMs-CuO ? NMs-CuO ?? CuSO4 pattern. The positive effects of MMs-CuO on plant copper content were higher than those of nanomaterials and CuSO4. MMs-CuO effect was more significant on plant biomass increase compared to the control. Rue plant needed lower amounts of copper for better plant growth. The treatments increased protein and carotenoids content in leaves compared with control. Changes in total chlorophyll content under three copper forms were very low and were only increased in leaves at 0.1 μM CuSO4. The NMs-CuO and MMs-CuO similarly reduced leaves’ Cu, MDA and ROS contents, and SOD activities. CAT enzyme activity had a similar pattern in three copper forms. CAT enzyme activity was only induced under the lowest level of three forms, while at other levels of Cu, it was reduced. NMs-CuO had a more negative effect on IRT1 relative gene expression in root compared with other iron forms. The IRT1 relative gene expression in shoots was positively affected under 2.5 μM CuSO4, 0.5 μM MMs-CuO, and 0.1 and 2.5 μM NMs CuO treatments.

Conclusion

The effect of micro- and nano-CuO on physiology and gene expression mechanisms in rue plants is shown to be does-dependent.

The examination of a well‐documented petroglyph site, located near the northeastern shoreline of now‐dry Owens Lake, California, is used as a springboard for a review of explanatory models for the interpretation of rock art sites in California and the Great Basin. Interpretive models and methods of analysis used by Julian Steward, Robert Heizer, and others who have visited or reported on this site are reviewed. The persistence of Heizer's “hunting‐magic” explanation for the creation of the rock art is used as one of several examples of how preconceived notions can affect interpretations of ancient art.  相似文献

Latent transforming growth factor-β binding protein-1 (LTBP-1) is an extracellular protein that is structurally similar to fibrillin and has an important role in controlling transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling by storing the cytokine in the extracellular matrix and by being involved in the conversion of the latent growth factor to its active form. LTBP-1 is found as both short (LTBP-1S) and long (LTBP-1L) forms, which are derived through the use of separate promoters. There is controversy regarding the importance of LTBP-1L, as Ltbp1L knockout mice showed multiple cardiovascular defects but the complete null mice did not. Here, we describe a third line of Ltbp1 knockout mice generated utilizing a conditional knockout strategy that ablated expression of both L and S forms of LTBP-1. These mice show severe developmental cardiovascular abnormalities and die perinatally; thus these animals display a phenotype similar to previously reported Ltbp1L knockout mice. We reinvestigated the other “complete” knockout line and found that these mice express a splice variant of LTBP-1L and, therefore, are not complete Ltbp1 knockouts. Our results clarify the phenotypes of Ltbp1 null mice and re-emphasize the importance of LTBP-1 in vivo.  相似文献

Two ecological forms of the threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus – a strictly marine form and an anadromous form – are often merged in the literature as a single “marine” form. Because we know virtually nothing of the life style of the two oceanic ecotypes in the sea and consequently nothing on reproductive isolation and gene flow I argue for a precise use of the ecological terms “marine” and “anadromous” for these two ecotypes. These terms should be self-describing. The frequent use of terms incorrectly describing intraspecific variation and life style of ecotypes can bias studies on community composition and interactions of populations.  相似文献

This paper examines the use of visual images of the Bushman peoples (San) and their cultural objects in contemporary South African advertising. As an image is a site of meaning, the relationship between the people represented in the advertisement and the culture for which the advertisement is produced demonstrates strategies of subjection and power. Within the context of the advertisement, I explore the extent to which San people are appropriated by the consumer society and their ritual objects reduced or altered to a Western aesthetic dimension. The contexts and ideas of the producing society determine production of the visual object.

The relationship between the San “artefact” and the advertisement as a work of “art” reflects a dimension of South African social and political processes. Representations of the two juxtaposed societies suggest that the value systems and cultural attitudes of the dominant group present contested domains which are explored. Bushmen represent a malleable signifier which is used to promote an apparently/ ostensibly applied vision of an emerging non‐racial country.  相似文献
