Biomechanism of impact resistance in the woodpecker’s head and its application

The woodpecker does not suffer head/eye impact injuries while drumming on a tree trunk with high acceleration(more than 1000×g) and high frequency.The mechanism that protects the woodpecker’s head has aroused the interest of ornithologists,biologists and scientists in the areas of mechanical engineering,material science and electronics engineering.This article reviews the literature on the biomechanisms and materials responsible for protecting the woodpecker from head impact injury and their applications in engineering and human protection.     

The mass‐produced postcard and the photography of emotions

During its heyday, roughly 1890–1940, the mass‐produced European picture‐postcard brought a tremendous variety of scenes, real and fabricated, within the reach of an avid buying public. While many people early in the present century did put together albums of postcards—commonly unused ones—others were able to use these for brief formalized messages to friends and family once the post office had decided to transmit such things. Amateurs and local commercial photographers alike could also make up their own picture‐postcards, to memorialize local scenes or even fleeting emotional states. Yet in the main postcard production was a large industry and a genuine mass medium. At the beginning of the century Germany alone was producing about 9 million cards a month. Examples from several countries are presented here.     

The group of 77 and the establishment of the international sea‐bed authority

Abstract

The Group of 77 favors the establishment of a strong International Sea‐Bed Authority with powers to regulate and control all the activities of exploration and exploitation of the “common heritage of mankind,”; referred to in the draft articles as “the Area.”; The Authority itself is to be composed of an Assembly as the supreme policy‐making organ in which the Contracting Parties are to be represented on the basis of sovereign equality; a Council as the executive organ implementing the policies emanating from the Assembly, to be composed of at least 36 states elected to ensure representation of clearly defined special interests and the principle of equitable geographical distribution, and to eschew any form of veto mechanism in its decision‐making process; the Enterprise as the operational organ through which the Authority is to undertake direct exploitation of the Area along with the other entities given access to the Area; and a Secretariat as well as certain subsidiary bodies of the Council.

The Group of 77 takes the position that the Convention itself and the Basic Conditions governing the entire process of exploration and exploitation of the Area must leave the Authority an appreciable margin of discretion in managing the Area for the benefit of mankind as a whole. Thus, a limited category of judicially reviewable decisions of the Authority is envisaged so long as such review does not challenge the legislative powers and resource policy decisions of the Authority. A Sea‐Bed Tribunal is no longer necessary as an organ of the Authority, since the work of such a Tribunal could be done by the special Sea‐Bed Disputes Chamber of the Proposed Law of the Sea Tribunal dealing with disputes arising under the Convention as a whole.     

The Body and Face of Woman: One Ornament that Signals Quality?

Evidence has accumulated in recent years supporting the hypothesis that both facial and bodily physical attractiveness in humans are certifications of developmental and hormonal health. Such evidence indicates that physical attractiveness is an honest or Zahavian signal of phenotypic and genetic quality. The hypothesis that physical beauty connotes health was first proposed by Westermarck and was discussed later by Ellis and Symons. It has been suggested that facial attractiveness in women is a deceptive signal of youth, unrelated to phenotypic and genetic quality. This sensory-bias or super-stimulus hypothesis is not supported by this study of men’s ratings of the attractiveness of photographs of 92 nude women. Independent ratings of photographs of faces, fronts with faces covered, and backs of the same women are significantly, positively correlated. The correlation between the ratings of different photos implies that women’s faces and external bodies comprise a single ornament of honest mate value, apparently constructed during puberty by estrogen and also probably by developmental adaptations for symmetry. Thus, women’s physical attractiveness in face and body honestly signal hormonal and perhaps developmental health.     

Oleo‐Signs and Quali‐Signs: The Qualities of Olive Oil

This article considers the way that a single substance, olive oil, bundles together a set ofqualisigns including luminosity, liquidity, spreadibility, durability, capacity to cleanse, capacity to seal or preserve, capacity to insulate, and notably, a lack of miscibility in water. These qualisigns allow olive oil to operate in several discrete religious contexts in the Mediterranean although the interpretations and the specific qualisigns made salient by particular semiotic metadiscourses are always changing, even though the material substrate remains the same. In contemporary Western discourses of distinction, the positive qualities of olive oil are not those primarily registered by the ordinary senses of taste, touch, and smell, but rather those that are established discursively by expert opinions of various kinds, which attest to olive oil's ‘healthful’ qualities.     

The continuity of living matter and the discontinuities of its constituents: do plankton and benthos really exist?

Plankton and benthos are popular concepts identifying two ways of life of aquatic organisms. Their spatial separation led to the development of different sampling techniques and to separate conceptualizations of the principles governing these subsets of the aquatic environment. Reciprocal connections between plankton and benthos, however, are very strong both from a functional (energy fluxes) and a structural (life cycle dynamics) point of view. A full appreciation of such links is forcing marine ecology towards a more integrated approach.     

Introduction—development and phylogeny of the arthropods: Darwin’s legacy

In the present essay, I first recall the genealogical concept of classification settled by Charles Darwin in the Origin of Species. Darwin tightly linked what we now call phylogeny and development. He often insisted to take into account embryonic and larval characters, most often using as examples his favourite animals, the cirripedes. Then I discuss remaining problems, and also perspectives, to address the link between phylogeny and development in the modern terms of molecular and cladistic phylogenetics and of molecular and genetic developmental biology.     

The visual remaking of urban space: Relocation and the use of public housing in “modern” Cairo

Focusing on an urban group that was moved from the center of the capital during 1979–1981 to public housing in a neighborhood in northern Cairo,1 this article explores some of the strategies used by the relocated population to articulate their daily needs and cultural dispositions with the state's hegemonic construction of “modern” space. The discussion focuses on the visual manifestations of these strategies that localize change in durable forms. It is the visibility of these transformations, the article shows, that makes them important signs of distinction and markers of social status. At the same time, it is this visibility that transforms the housing project and remakes the image of Cairo that the state envisaged.

Self‐employment among French‐Canadians: The role of the regional milieu

This article examines the relationship between self‐employment among French‐Canadians and the regional milieu. Our main argument is that self‐employment among French‐Canadians depends on the specific regional milieu. The empirical analysis is based on the public use file on individuals of the 1986 Census of Canada. Self‐employment is related to mother tongue, region, industry, occupation, income and language spoken at home. Then, the association of socio‐economic and socio‐demographic attributes with self‐employment and mother tongue in different French‐Canadian communities is examined. The relation between self‐employment, regional milieus and French‐Canadian communities is further explored using the correspondence analysis method. Results show that in addition to variations in class resources and local opportunities, a majority or minority setting influences the economic niches utilized by French entrepreneurs. Among francophone minorities, small and relatively assimilated communities are usually more entrepreneurial than major francophone concentrations. However, this relationship is not causal, and does not indicate an economic benefit associated with assimilation. Still, French‐Canadians are not a typical entrepreneurial minority that utilizes extensive informal entrepreneurial networks for economic mobility, and the political and economic struggle of French‐Canadians for advancement has not been markedly focused on entrepreneur‐ship. In fact, our results suggest that self‐employment is not a major facet of group mobilization among francophones. Entrepreneurship is perceived by the francophone establishment as an important means for long‐term economic advancement. In attempting to promote entrepreneurship, the need to utilize ethnic networks and community cohesion is greatly acknowledged. We conclude that the preservation of autonomous ethno‐linguistic identity is viewed not only as a means for economic advancement but as a major goal by itself. Hence, French‐Canadians resemble, perhaps, certain sub‐national minorities in Europe, rather than other ethnic minorities in North America. The desired relationship between self‐employment and retention of group identity does not yet prevail, among French‐Canadians, and their political and economic struggle for advancement, so far, has not been focused on entrepreneurship.     

Strasburger’s legacy to mitosis and cytokinesis and its relevance for the Cell Theory

Eduard Strasburger was one of the most prominent biologists contributing to the development of the Cell Theory during the nineteenth century. His major contribution related to the characterization of mitosis and cytokinesis and especially to the discovery of the discrete stages of mitosis, which he termed prophase, metaphase and anaphase. Besides his observations on uninucleate plant and animal cells, he also investigated division processes in multinucleate cells. Here, he emphasised the independent nature of mitosis and cytokinesis. We discuss these issues from the perspective of new discoveries in the field of cell division and conclude that Strasburger's legacy will in the future lead to a reformulation of the Cell Theory and that this will accommodate the independent and primary nature of the nucleus, together with its complement of perinuclear microtubules, for the organisation of the eukaryotic cell.     

Estimation of bird distribution based on ring re‐encounters: precision and bias of the division coefficient and its relation to multi‐state models

Capsule The division coefficient is an estimate of the proportion of ringed birds migrating to different destination areas taking into account area‐specific re‐encounter probabilities.

Aims To explore precision and bias of the division coefficient method by a simulation study and to compare the approach with multi‐state models.

Methods In a simulation study true and estimated division coefficients were compared. The division coefficient method was mathematically compared with the multi‐state model.

Results The estimated division coefficients seemed to be unbiased if the assumptions were met. The precision decreased if the bird distribution became similar in both bird groups and when difference between area‐specific re‐encounter probabilities increased. A bootstrap method to assess precision is presented. The estimates from the division coefficient method equal the maximum likelihood estimates in a multi‐state model including only one time interval.

Conclusion Before applying the division coefficient method or a multi‐state model to real data a simulation study should be conducted in order to explore the behaviour of parameter estimation. The division coefficient method with the bootstrap confidence intervals is an easy alternative to a multi‐state model with one time interval when the bird distribution between destination areas (e.g. migratory connectivity) alone is of interest.     

The Traditional Account of Ethics and Law at the End of Life—and its Discontents

For the past 30 years, the Melbourne urologist Dr Rodney Syme has quietly—and more recently, not-so-quietly—assisted terminally and permanently ill people to die. This paper draws on Syme’s recent book, A Good Death: An Argument for Voluntary Euthanasia, to identify and to reflect on some important challenges to what I outline as the traditional account of law, ethics, and end of life decisions. Among the challenges Syme makes to the traditional view is his argument that physicians’ intentions are frail and unfairly expose physicians to moral and legal censure. Secondly, Syme argues that physician-assisted dying (PAD) should be framed as a form of palliative care, not as a kind of safety-chute for when palliative care fails. Thirdly, Syme himself is a rare breed: a dissident doctor who has opened himself up for scrutiny and criticism, by reflecting publicly on his experiences at the edge of the law. Syme’s career illustrates that prohibition, just like legalization, is a social policy that carries social consequences. The paper acknowledges the variability and idiosyncratic nature of extra-legal physician-assisted dying, and argues that the best way forward is to attempt to weigh the social consequences of both policies. Advocates and opponents of PAD should recognize that both prohibition and legalization involve trade-offs and impose possible costs on patients and on society.     

The ‘paradox’ of polyembryony: A review of the cases and a hypothesis for its evolution

Animal polyembryony appears to be paradoxical because it clones an unproven genotype at the expense of genetic diversity in a clutch. However, it is employed by at least 18 taxa in six phyla (excluding instances of occasional twinning). Most polyembryony occurs in parasitic stages or in other environments whose quality is not predictable by the mother; in some instances, it compensates for a constraint on zygote number. We predict that polyembryony is likely to evolve when the offspring has more information regarding optimal clutch size than the parents.     

“People think that Romanians and Roma are the same”: everyday bordering and the lifting of transitional controls

ABSTRACT

On 1 January 2014 the transitional controls on free movement adopted by the UK when Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007, ended. This paper demonstrates how the discourses of politicians relating to their removal, amplified via news media contributed to the extension of state bordering practices further into everyday life. Based on ethnographic research into everyday bordering during 2013–15 the paper uses an intersectional framework to explore how this homogenizing, bordering discourse was experienced and contested from differently situated perspectives of Roma and non-Roma social actors from established communities.     

The exclusive economic zone and antarctica: The dilemmas of non‐sovereign jurisdiction

Abstract

Antarctica is the only continent from which no exclusive economic zones extend. This article examines the EEZ as a legal concept, particularly its relevance for enhancing maritime jurisdiction offshore Antarctica. The study analyzes the political setting in the Antarctic which would affect creation of EEZs in the region, especially the division of the continent into sector claims by certain states and the implications presented by various island groups in the area. An appraisal is made of the legal situation and the jurisdictional opportunities afforded by the Antarctic Treaty System. The author concludes that a recognized political authority, with demonstrated legal competence and capabilities, is administering jurisdictional considerations in the Antarctic area. In its operation, this Antarctic Treaty regime fulfills management and conservation functions analogous to those of EEZs in waters offshore the continent.
