Abstract

From July 1987 to June 1989, 141 nests and 365 nests, respectively, of the adventive social vespines the German wasp, Vespula germanica (F.), and the common wasp V. vulgaris (L.), from the City of Christchurch, New Zealand, were evaluated for seven major characteristics.

There were few, if any, differences in nest sites, and from spring to early summer in nest traffic, nest size, and numbers of combs. However, Getman wasps showed no preference for direction of nest entrances, while common wasp nests were more numerous in areas most exposed to the morning sun. Some Getman wasp nests survived the winter and began producing new worker cells by late June, but all common wasp nests died by June. Because common wasp nests have been reported surviving the winter in beech forest, which produces honey dew, and honey dew is not available in Christchurch City, common wasp nest survival over winter may be more dependent upon carbohydrates and/or prey dependent upon carbohydrates than the survival of German wasp nests. The presence of large, expanding wasp nests from early spring must impose localised predation pressures virtually unknown in the Northern Hemisphere where overwintering nests are rare. Wasp population dynamics, and impacts of wasps on fauna, are likely to vary between different geographical areas of New Zealand, but as targets for biological control, the two wasp species can generally be considered to be quite similar.  相似文献

Abstract

After occurring sporadically in New Zealand since 1921, the common wasp, Vespula vulgaris (L.), was found in March and April 1983 to be established in Dunedin, where 6 nests were discovered. Subsequent examination of museum specimens showed that queens had been collected in Wellington in 1978, and nests by January 1982. Christchurch was invaded in early 1984, several workers were collected near Auckland in March and April 1984, and workers were reported at Nelson in March and May 1984. The Dunedin nests were up to 6 times the size of nests recorded from the Northern Hemisphere, and produced up to 23 times as many new queens. Workers, nest size, and nest productivity were sufficiently different from those reported in western North America to suggest that the New Zealand population originated elsewhere. Colour patterning of the head and pronotum readily separate New Zealand V. vulgaris from New Zealand V. germanica. The nest carton of V. vulgaris is brown; that of V. germanica is grey. Conditions in New Zealand appear to be favourable for V. vulgaris; it can be expected to spread and it may at times reach the high population levels experienced in Europe and the western United States.  相似文献

Abstract

Density‐related variation in queen quality has been proposed as a possible mechanism regulating population fluctuations in Vespula species. We investigated annual variation in the quality (size, weight, and fat content) of adult V. vulgaris queens representing four stages of their life cycle (spring, founding, developing, and emerged) taken from six sites in beech forest, South Island, New Zealand. For each queen the dry weight, head width, and thorax length was measured. For a subsample of queens, the fat content was determined by ether extraction. The size of queen cells was measured from a subsample of nests. Size, weight, and fat content of queens varied between wasp colonies and sites. The smallest juvenile queens were under‐represented in the reproductive population. There was no direct link between body size and food supply. Size and weight of developing queens increased as the number of cells in the nest increased. The size of the queen cells varied significantly among layers in a nest and among nests. The under‐representation of small queens in the reproductive population suggests that queen quality may affect survival and/or competitive ability by increasing winter fat storage, nest building activity, and/or success in usurpation disputes.  相似文献

Abstract

German wasps (Vespula germanica F.) and common wasps (V. vulgaris L.) both show variations in colour markings in New Zealand. Overlap in the ranges of markings of the head and thorax is limited enough for ready distinction of queens and workers of the two species. Abdominal markings overlap considerably between the species. Colour markings of males were too similar to identify the species, which were completely separated by the shape of their genitalia. The frequency of occurrence of “intermediate” markings in V. germanica populations did not increase in areas where the two species overlap. This suggests there is little or no genetic exchange between the two species.  相似文献

Vespine wasps are known for their high endothermic capacity. Endothermic activity is directly linked to respiration. However, knowledge on wasp respiration is sparse and almost nothing is known about their resting metabolism. We investigated the yellowjackets' CO(2) production in a flow-through respirometer chamber overnight. Endothermic and behavioral activity was observed by real-time infrared thermography. Most resting wasps were ectothermic or only slightly endothermic (thoracic temperature excess against abdomen <0.6°C). In the investigated temperature range (T(a)=2.9-42.4°C) mean CO(2) production rate of resting wasps increased steeply according to an exponential function, from 5.658 μl g(-1) min(-1) at 8.3°C to 8.504 μl g(-1) min(-1) at 20.2°C, 58.686 μl g(-1) min(-1) at 35.3°C and 102.84 μl g(-1) min(-1) at 40°C. The wasps' respiratory critical thermal maximum (CT(max)), marking the upper edge of their viable temperature range, was 45.3°C. The respiratory CT(max) did not differ significantly from the activity CT(max) of 44.9°C. CT(max) values were considerably below that of honeybees (48.9 and 49.0°C for respiration and activity, respectively). This allows honeybees to kill wasps by heat-balling. Comparison with other arthropods showed that vespine wasps are among the insects with the highest mass-specific resting metabolic rate and the steepest increase of metabolism with ambient temperature.  相似文献

Summary The rearing of queen brood from worker cells in the nests ofVespula germanica (F.) in Australia was found at all stages of the colony cycle from early summer to autumn. Worker cells used to rear queens were 17% wider at their open ends than cells used for worker production, and in all other respects their dimensions were greater. The volume of a worker cell used for queen nearing was 21% larger than cells used for rearing workers but half the volume of a normal queen cell. Queen pupae reared in worker cells were significantly smaller than those reared in queen cells of the same nest. The spatial distribution of queen pupae in worker comb tended to be random although some evidence of nonrandom clustering was noted.The significance of this phenomenon is discussed in relation to caste differentiation and queen-control of gyne initiation and production. It is concluded that the phenomenon is neither seasonal nor due to some intrinsic component of the colony's annual cycle, and that it is unlikely to be an emergency queen-rearing response. Development of queens in worker cells may have occurred during favourable feeding regimes, perhaps determined by the benign Australian environment.  相似文献

The mating decisions made by social insect males and females profoundly affect the structure of colonies and populations. However, few studies have used experimental approaches to understand mating behavior and mate choice in social insect taxa. This study investigated mating success in the polyandrous social wasp Vespula maculifrons. Mating trials were designed to test predictions that characteristics of body size and colony‐of‐origin would affect mating success. We first investigated if size differences existed among individuals and found that males from different colonies differed significantly in the size of nine morphological traits. However, male trait size was not significantly associated with male mating success. In contrast, females from different colonies differed significantly in only six of the nine measured traits, and four of these traits were associated with successful mating behaviors. Specifically, the correlated traits of gaster length, third tergum length, antennal length, and total length were positively associated with female mating success. Thus, long females experience mating advantages over females that are short. We also found that males and females from one particular colony displayed significantly greater mating activity than individuals from other colonies. Thus, the colony from which individuals originate plays an important role in determining mating success. Finally, our experiments failed to detect any evidence of nestmate avoidance during the mating trials. Overall, our data suggest that social insect reproductives may experience differential mating success based on their phenotype or developmental environment.  相似文献

Summary While foraging on dead adult and pupal honeybees, individual wasps showed little conformity in the order in which they dismembered their prey; they attempted to take as large loads as possible and preferred abdomens and thoraces to heads.Although wasps always removed some of the appendages from thoraces, especially the hind and middle legs, the presence of these appendages did not encourage foraging or facilitate recognition of the prey.Pupae were preferred to newly emerged bees, and newly emerged bees to old bees, probably because of the difference in hardness of the cuticle. Whereas wasps learnt to divide adult bodies at the neck and waist, they showed considerable adaptability when dismembering pupae and when confronted with unusual situations. Although individuals tended to become conditioned to collecting one type of prey, some changed from collecting adults to collecting pupae.Wasps could easily be enticed away from meat by offering sugar syrup, but the change from syrup to meat was much more difficult, although it happened occasionally.Some wasps attempted to defend a supply of food against other would-be collectors. Despite their wariness of each other, wasps were attracted to the sight of others at a food source. The frequency with which a wasp continues to visit a site that has ceased to yield food depends on its previous foraging experience there.  相似文献

Summary: Changes in intraspecific social organization are of particular interest to sociobiologists, because an understanding of the genetic and ecological determinants of different social forms bears on the origins of sociality and mating isolation. The Southern Yellowjacket, Vespula squamosa (Drury), occurs as both polygyne and single queen nests. This study examined intra-caste size differences between both social forms of nests. Four polygyne and 13 single queen nests were collected from counties in Florida and Georgia. All single queen nests were one season old, whereas polygyne nests were at least 2 years old. The latter had significantly more workers per nest (p < 0.005), but mean values varied by over 50-fold. Workers and gynes from each social form were compared for six measures of body size: weight, wing length, femur length, thorax length, thorax width and head width. Correlation coefficients for pairs of all traits were highest between head width and both measures of thorax size (r > 0.72), whereas the lowest positive correlations were obtained between weight and all other measures of size (r < 0.64). Gynes of both social forms differed significantly in weight (p < 0.001) and thorax length (p < 0.04), whereas workers differed significantly for all six measures of size (p < 0.04 to p < 0.001).  相似文献

Summary With two combs and one or a small number of workers it was found that the comb itself without brood was less attractive than a comb with cocoon caps or larvae, but single workers were equally attracted to combs with a large or small number of larvae, or queen or non-queen larvae. A worker walked at random when off a comb and tended, when on a comb, to stay with the first group of larvae that it found.Observations in the field showed that adults formed a group at night at the bottom of the nest.Records from six observation nests of whole or almost whole colonies have been collected over a period of three years. In all cases a dominant comb, which carried a larger percentage of the workers than any other comb and usually the queen if present, was soon established. The dominant comb always contained brood, was nearest or one of the combs nearest the entrance, received most foragers, and workers grouped on it more frequently than other combs.The grouping behaviour of workers on a comb can be related to background temperature and caused comb temperature to increase to 29° C–32.5° C.The worker attention a larva received increased as the number of workers on its comb increased.Reasons for and the consequences of grouping behaviour, the appearance of a dominant comb and the position of the latter in the nest, are discussed.

L'ouvrière ne se trouvant pas sur le rayon se déplace au hasard. De plus, quand elle est sur un rayon elle a tendance à rester avec le premier groupe de larves qu'elle trouve.L'examen des observations effectuées sur le terrain montre que les adultes se groupent la nuit, au fond du nid.Six nids, contenant des colonies entières ou presque entières, ont fait l'objet de plusieurs observations pendant une période de trois ans. Durant la même période, les résultats ont été enregistrés. Dans tous les cas, un rayon dominant s'est établi dans un bref délai. Ce rayon avait un plus grand pourcentage d'ouvrières que tout autre, et comportait généralement la reine. Le rayon dominant contenait toujours du couvain; il se trouvait le plus près de l'entrée du nid (ou bien était parmi les plus près); il recevait le plus grand nombre de butineuses, et des ouvrières s'y groupaient plus fréquemment que sur d'autres rayons.Il est possible d'établir un rapport entre le comportement des ouvrières lorsqu'elles se groupent sur un rayon, et la température ambiante. Abstract

The way in which foraging wasps use cues for prey location and choice appears to depend on both the context and on the type of prey. Vespula germanica is an opportunistic, generalist prey forager, and individual wasp foragers often return to hunt at sites of previous hunting success. In this paper, we studied which cues are used by this wasp when relocating a food source. Particularly we analysed the response to a displaced visual cue versus a foraging location at which either honey or cat food had been previously presented. We conclude that location is used over a displaced visual cue for directing wasp hovering, although the landing response is directed differently according to bait type. When wasps are exploiting cat food, location also elicits landing, but if they are exploiting honey, a displaced visual cue elicits landing more frequently than location.  相似文献

Many social insects exhibit morphologically distinct worker and queen castes that perform different functions. These functional differences may generate unique selection regimes operating on body size. For example, queens may be under directional selection for large body size, whereas directional selection on worker body size may be limited. Such contrasting selection pressures may differentially affect levels of genetic variation associated with size variation in the two castes. This study sought to determine if genetic effects underlying phenotypic differences varied between the worker and queen castes of the social wasp Vespula maculifrons. We predicted that directional selection would remove genetic variation associated with size differences in the queen caste, whereas a lack of directional selection would tend to maintain genetic variation associated with size differences in the worker caste. We thus (1) calculated broad and narrow sense heritabilities for several morphological traits, (2) examined whether some paternal genotypes produced more morphologically diverse offspring than others, and (3) determined whether trait size variation was associated with genetic variation within colonies. We found that few morphological traits were significantly heritable, indicating that little genetic variance for those traits existed within our study population. We also found that some patrilines produced more morphologically variable offspring than others, suggesting a role of genotype in phenotypic plasticity. And finally, no significant correlations between genetic diversity arising from multiple mating by queens within colonies and trait variation in either caste were found. Overall, our findings indicate a weak effect of genotype on both worker and queen body size variation and are suggestive of a large environmental influence on morphological trait size. Moreover, our results do not indicate that levels of genetic variation underlying size variation differ substantially between castes in this species.  相似文献

Abstract

Nests of both common (Vespula vulgaris) and German wasps (V. germanica) sometimes overwinter in New Zealand. Three overwintering common wasp colonies were found in low-altitude honeydew beech forest; about 2% of the colonies initiated there in 1988 survived the winter. Wasp traffic rates from nests in Nelson city and a nation wide survey of wasp abundance, showed that more German wasp than common wasp workers were on the wing in winter and spring. German wasp colonies in Nelson city were more likely to overwinter than were common wasp colonies. Of the active German wasp colonies recorded in Nelson in January and February 1989, only two (4%) had previously overwintered, but these two nests accounted for 38% of all German wasp workers estimated to leave nests in the area. Had other overwintering colonies not been poisoned, overwintering colonies might have accounted for up to 11 % of nests and produced up to 64% of German wasp workers on the wing in January and February 1989.

Overwintering common wasp colonies did not produce queens or drones in their first year or second spring, but all 10 overwintering German wasp colonies examined produced sexuals at both times. German wasp queens produced in winter and spring may influence the number of colonies successfully initiated and affect the population dynamics of German wasps in New Zealand.  相似文献

The classic formulation of optimal foraging theory predicts that a central-place forager will gather more food if it is required to travel farther from the nest to find that food. We examined the foraging behavior of German yellowjackets (Vespula germanica) to determine whether carbohydrate foragers follow this pattern. We trained foragers to collect 2 M fructose solution at 5 or 50 m from the nest and measured the time spent feeding, load size, and the rate of delivery. We show that as a forager’s crop fills during a foraging bout, the amount of solution ingested per second decreased. However, load size did not change as wasps collected food up to 50 m from the nest. Instead, temperature and body size were better predictors of the volume of fructose a forager carried. Finally, the rate of fructose delivered to the nest was higher at warmer temperatures. Due to the fact that wasps gather more food but feed for shorter periods of time at warmer temperatures, we found an overall negative relationship between feeding time and load size. We conclude that the strong effects temperature had on the behavior of V. germanica foragers imply that feeding time may not always be an accurate predictor of the size of the load an individual carries back to the nest. Results from this study suggest that in yellowjacket colonies, foragers can collect and bring disproportionately more food back to the nest during the warmest days of the summer, a time of year when this pest species reaches peak population size during its annual colony cycle.  相似文献

Pumpkins, a subgroup of the domesticated Cucurbita species, have been reported to range in fruit type (related to size) from miniature (<100 g) to jumbo (>273 kg). In order to obtain a wide range of fruit types it is hypothesised that all potential factors affecting fruit type must be used. One factor that is often overlooked in plant studies is genome size. In various plant species, genome size variation has been associated with characteristics such as cell size, plant size and flowering time. Such characteristics are referred to as nucleotypic parameters. In order to determine if nucleotypic selection is occurring in pumpkin, 17 varieties were analysed for genome size variation in two separate experiments. The species selected encompass the total range of fruit types reported in pumpkin. Significant nuclear DNA content variation was observed in pumpkin. There was no significant correlation between genome size and fruit type. In fact, the miniature pumpkin types were found to have the same genome size as the jumbo pumpkin types. In addition, a positive correlation between genome size and stomata length (an estimate of cell size in plants) was observed. Both the miniature and jumbo types were observed to have the smallest genome size and the smallest cell size. Thus, nucleotypic selection does appear to occur in pumpkin and appears to be involved in determining fruit type, although it may not be the only factor involved.  相似文献

In some ants, bees, and wasps, workers kill or "police" maleeggs laid by other workers in order to maintain the reproductiveprimacy of the queen. Kin selection theory predicts that multiplemating by the queen is one factor that can selectively favorworker policing. This is because when the queen is mated tomultiple males, workers are more closely related to the queen'ssons than to the sons of other workers. Earlier work has suggestedthat reproductive patterns in the German wasp Vespula germanicamay contradict this theory, because in some colonies a largefraction of the adult males were inferred to be the workers'sons, despite the effective queen mating frequency being greaterthan 2 (2.4). In the present study, we reexamine the V. germanicacase and show that it does support the theory. First, geneticanalysis confirms that the effective queen mating frequencyis high, 2.9, resulting in workers being more related to thequeen's sons than to other workers' sons. Second, behavioralassays show that worker-laid eggs are effectively killed byother workers, despite worker-laid eggs having the same intrinsicviability as queen-laid ones. Finally, we estimate that approximately58.4% of the male eggs but only 0.44% of the adult males areworker derived in queenright colonies, consistent with workerreproduction being effectively policed.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that affect animal dispersal behavior is important from both fundamental and applied perspectives. Dispersal can have clear evolutionary and ecological consequences, but for nonnative insect pests, dispersal capacity can also help to explain invasion success. Vespula germanica is a social wasp that, in the last century, has successfully invaded several regions of the world, showing one of the highest spread rates reported for a nonnative insect. In contrast with nonsocial wasps, in social species, queens are responsible for population redistribution and spread, as workers are sterile. For V. germanica, it has been observed that queen flight is limited to 2 distinct periods: early autumn, when new queens leave the nest to mate and find sheltered places in which to hibernate, and spring when new colonies are founded. Our aim was to study the flight behavior of V. germanica queens by focusing on the different periods in which dispersal occurs, characterizing as well the potential contribution of queen flight (i.e., distance) to the observed geographical spread. Our results suggest that the distances flown by nonoverwintered queens is greater than that flown by overwintered individuals, suggesting that the main queen dispersal events would occur before queens enter hibernation. This could relate to a behavioral trait of the queens to avoid the inbreeding with related drones. Additionally, given the short distances flown and remarkable geographical spread observed, we provide evidence showing that queen dispersal by flight is likely to contribute proportionately less to population spread than human‐aided factors.  相似文献

Abstract: The reproduction performance of captive owl monkeys, a breed used extensively in biomedical research, was observed at the Battelle Primate Facility (BPF). The colony grew through captive breeding, imports from the Peruvian Primatological Project, and others to a peak size of 730. It included seven karyotypes of Aotus sp. Results showed that owl monkeys can breed successfully in a laboratory in numbers sufficient to sustain modest research programs. Reproductive success increases when pairs are compatible, of the same karyotype, and stabilized; however, mated pairs of different karyotype are also productive. Under conditions of controlled lighting and heating, owl monkeys at BPF showed no birth peak nor birth season.  相似文献
