Orthotrichum lewinskyae sp. nov. (Orthotrichaceae,Musci), a Moroccan epiphytic moss related to O. scanicum Grönv. and o. holmenii Lew.-Haap

Abstract

A new species of Orthotrichum (O. lewinskyae) from the Rif Cordillera and the Mid Atlas Mountains (Morocco) is described. This taxon is included in subgenus Pulchella (Schimp.) Vitt section Pulchella Schimp. It is close to O. scanicum Grönv. and o. holmenii Lew.-Haap., from which it differs by the following combination of characters: large spores (22–30 μm); leaves linear-Ianceolate with wide and excavate at bases; leaf margins progressively narrowed at apices, which can be plane or incurved on one or both sides; upper leaf-cells larger than those of related taxa; seta intermediate between those of O. scanicum and o. holmenii.     

On two new species of Mesochaetopterus (Polychaeta) from the Brazilian coast

Es wurden zwei neue Arten von Mesochaetopterus (Chaetopteridae) (Polychaeta) beschrieben und mit den restlichen Arten dieser Gattung verglichen.

Der 60 cm lange Mesochaetopterus xerecus zeigt eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit M. tay‐lori, aber unterscheidet sich durch die Länge und Pigmentierung der Tentakel, existenz von einem Paar Augen, Anzahl der Parapodien in der vorderen Körperregion, Form der dunklen starken Borsten des 4. Segments, Anzahl der "accessory feeding organs”;, Anzahl der Zähne der Haken der Neuropodia.

Mesochaetopterus xejubus ist eine kleinere Art von ungefähr 7 cm Länge und ist in Form und Größe M. minuta am ähnlichsten. Es unterscheidet sich jedoch durch die Form und Größe des Peristomium, Farbe der Tentakeln, Anzahl der Parapodia der vorderen Körperregion, Anzahl und Form der dunklen starken Borsten des 4. Para‐podiums der vorderen Region, Anzahl der "accessory feeding organs”;, Anzahl der Segmente der mittleren Körperregion, Anzahl der Zähne der Haken der Neuropodia und schleimdrüsenreiches Epithelium der mittleren Körperregion.

The Effect of “Ferrodex”, Vitamin A and “Rovimix β-Carotene” on the Iron and Copper Levels in Blood Plasma of Calves

In 8 Versuchen wurde der Gärungsverlauf bei der Silierung von nitratarmem Grünfutter von Welschem Weidelgras, Knaulgras und Gras‐Leguminosen‐Gemenge geprüft. Aus den Ergebnissen geht hervor, daß bei Fehlen von Nitrat im Grünfutter bereits zu Gärbeginn Buttersäure entsteht, parallel zur Milchsäuregärung, auch in leicht vergärbarem Grünfutter. Diese frühzeitige Buttersäurebildung ist mit dem Fehlen von Nitrat als natürlicher Clostridieninhibitor zu erklären. Die Clostridienentwicklung verläuft zu Gärbeginn demnach wesentlich schneller als bisher angenommen wurde. Offensichtlich dienen leicht lösliche Kohlenhydrate als Substrat für die Buttersäurebildung. In nitratarmem Grünfutter werden deshalb Clostridien als Nahrungskonkurrenten für die Milchsäurebakterien wirksam. Aminosäuren werden zu Gärbeginn nicht abgebaut. Trotz z.T. hoher Buttersäuregehalte sind die Ammoniakgehalte gering. Höhere Homologe der Buttersäure fehlen. Die Milchsäuregärung erreicht trotz hoher Zuckergehalte im Grünfutter meist nur ein begrenztes Ausmaß. Es werden Unterschiede in der Vergärbarkeit der Kohlen‐hydratfraktion zwischen den Gräsern angenommen.

The Genus Nomocharis

Background: Ziziphus lotus, wild jujube, is a xerophytic shrub of the Rhamnaceae family widely distributed in arid and semi-arid regions of Tunisia, where it occupies most soil types. Phenological patterns of desert plants are strongly affected by the seasonality of water availability and phreatophytes represent a particularly interesting case for studying such relationships.

Aim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between phenological traits and water potential patterns of the wild jujube as a tool for understanding how plants cope with extreme drought.

Methods: Phenophases and predawn (Ψ_pd) and midday (Ψ_md) xylem water potentials of wild jujube were studied monthly (Nov 2007–Oct 2008) at Samaâliate and Oued El Hallouf in southern Tunisia. These sites receive164 mm and 191 mm of annual rainfall, respectively, and differ in slope and soil type.

Results: The Ψ_md decreased progressively and concomitantly with increasing seasonal drought, reaching the lowest values in late summer (down to –3.9 MPa for both sites). Seasonality of Ψ_pd was less pronounced for plants established in Oued El Hallouf (–2.09 MPa) than in Samaâliate (–2.63 MPa) at the end of the dry season. Wild jujube is dormant from October through to March and mature plants flower in May and produce fruits in August.

Conclusions: Our results clearly demonstrate that wild jujube is a drought tolerant species reaching low water potentials during the driest months of summer.

Scaphidiidae (Coleoptera) of Fiji

Abstract

This paper describes 12 new species of Scaphidiidae from Fiji based on a collection made in October 1977 on the two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Three genera and 23 species are now known from Fiji: Baeocera Erichson (parallela n.sp., vanuana n.sp., plana n.sp., ovalis n.sp., kuscheli n.sp., gnava n.sp., ignobilis n.sp., kuscheliana n.sp., reducta n.sp., plus two species left unnamed); Scaphisoma Leach (kuscheli n.sp., liliputanum Löbl, distans Löbl, aequatum Löbl, zimmermani Löbl, debile n.sp., mucronatum n.sp., fijianum Löbl, alienum Löbl); and Scaphoxium Löbl (ventrale Löbl, malekulense Löbl, vitianum Löbl). Keys are given to genera and species.
