Although documentary films, in formats such as the travelogue-expedition film, are rarely considered as a basis for insight into the Hollywood cinema, the early 1930s provide one historical period during which travelogues produced by independent filmmakers achieved such public popularity that the Hollywood studios were forced to respond. Studios produced some feature-length documentaries themselves, began distributing others, and generated "hybrid" films, such as M-G-M's Trader Horn [1931], that demonstrate a surprising willingness to give up the priority of narrative for the advantage of providing audiences with digressive documentary interludes devoted to the spectacle of exotic cultures, landscapes and wildlife.  相似文献

“Women's film” in Hollywood is associated both with the genre of melodrama, the “weepie”, and with female spectatorship. In the Indian context of popular Hindi cinema, first, genre analysis itself is a questionable line of inquiry since several genres, the melodrama, musical, gangster, or mystery, combine in a single film, known locally as the masala (spicy) film; and second, films are scarcely divided by a gendered viewership. Yet I identify “women's films” as a distinct category in Hindi cinema, emerging around the ‘70s. These women's films typically center on female protagonists, dramatize their victimization and vindication; by the ‘80s under a range of influences these films mutated into rape‐revenge narratives.

However, another strain emerged within the ‘70s’ “women's film,” which drew on cinema's rich visual iconographic tradition of the sight gag, promulgating the comedic/tomboy heroine figure. It favored laughing and mocking patriarchal structures rather than surrendering to them in tears. Focusing on Ramesh Sippy's Sita aur Gita [1972] emblematic of this trend I explore theoretical concerns about associating genres with gender. In keeping with recent poststructuralist theories about gender and media ‘consumption I show how the film destabilized clear‐cut gender identification and stood for a promising trend that was sadly undercut. Thus, while genre might still be a useful analytical tool for Hindi cinema, defining women's film as female‐centered narratives is a viable category as long as we appreciate the instability in gendered viewer identification.  相似文献

Studies of Jamie Uys's Gods Must be Crazy films have tended to focus on his pseudo-ethnographic representation of “Bushmen,” from primarily Western perspectives, both anthropological and anti-apartheid. This study examines critically the wider corpus of Uys's feature films, especially those employing “Bushmen” characters, in terms of intertextual relations. The article offers the comments of many San viewers of the films and also conveys the perspective of Gao, the main Ju/'hoansi actor. Finally, the study examines responses from the anthropological community to the films.  相似文献

Thermodynamics of contact angle phenomena is strongly affected by the presence of thin liquid films. However, at present, studies for CO2/brine/mineral systems only consider the films apart from contact angles. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to simultaneously investigate the interrelationship between water film thicknesses and water contact angles. Two types of contact angles were considered namely Young’s contact angle (no water film is present) and contact angle with film (a stable film is present). The results showed that as Young’s contact angle increased, film thickness decreased which leading to increasing of contact angle with film. The effects of CO2-mineral pre-contact have also been investigated and it has been found that on mediate hydrophilic surfaces (Q3), water films were present when CO2 droplets were placed above the surfaces, however, water films were absent when CO2 droplets directly contact with the surfaces. This phenomenon implies that water films on mineral surfaces have a possibility to rupture and a film rupture mechanism for CO2 adhesion on hydrated mineral surfaces was proposed. These results may provide new information on interactions among CO2, water/brine and mineral to better understand the behaviour of CO2 during geologic sequestration.  相似文献

Anthropological evaluations of the film work of Robert Gardner have been compromised by their reluctance to engage with it as art, and more broadly, to celebrate rather than vilify the aesthetic possibilities of the genre of ethnographic film. Even recent experiments with reflexivity have done little to challenge the realism that undergirds anthropological reception of non‐fiction film. By contrast, this article and interview considers Gardner's work as both anthropology and art. In particular, it addresses the evolving dialectic of the verbal and the visual in his films, from Bhinden Harbour (1951) to Passenger (1998). It also argues that recent efforts by anthropologists to rethink the concept of culture from a post‐semiotic perspective, foregrounding corporeal embodiment in the constitution of culture as much as the self, expand the theoretical boundaries of visual anthropology. In turn, it suggests that this reorientation towards sensation and perception should allow for a more approbatory understanding of Gardner's films.  相似文献

Fifty-five Crested Francolins, Dendroperdix sephaena sephaena, were trapped, marked, retrapped and observed from 1984 to 1988 to assess and describe gender and age criteria based on morphological measurements and plumage characteristics on the farm La Boheme (Rustenburg, North West province, South Africa). The measurements and characteristics were compared with skin specimens of the other recognied subspecies endemic to Africa, namely D. s. zambesiae, D. s. grantii, D. s. spilogaster and D. s. rovuma. Selected biometric parameters of specimens were measured at the Ditsong Museum of Natural History and the American Museum of Natural History in 2014. The purpose of this study was to describe age categories (excluding chicks) with corresponding gender characteristics based on morphology and plumage features. This study revealed six definitive age/gender categories. A combination of spur length (or absence of long spurs in the case of females) and feather colouration patterns on the back, tail coverts, wing coverts and mantle are reliable indicators of different gender/age categories in all D. sephaena subspecies in Africa.  相似文献

In the northern Vanuatu town of Luganville a small group of men have responded to social and legal changes engendered by women's rights activists by forming a male support group called ‘Violence Against Men’. Members of this ‘backlash’ movement argue that the insidious promotion of Western‐style ‘women's rights’ is leading to discrimination against men in divorce proceedings, child custody battles, and in domestic violence and rape cases. They directly oppose recent and ongoing legal changes aimed at protecting women from domestic violence, such as Domestic Violence Protection Court Orders, and the repeatedly tabled (but long‐delayed) ‘Family Protection Bill’. Such interventions, they argue, undermine Vanuatu's ‘natural’kastom and Christian patriarchal gender order and, in doing so, pose a serious threat to the socio‐economic productivity of the nation‐state. For other men, however, rather than opposing women's rights activism, such challenges have raised questions about how men might successfully negotiate their identities in ways that are sensitive to contemporary issues of gender equality without undermining existing paradigms. Thus, this paper addresses the value accorded to universalism and relativism in gender activism in Vanuatu, and especially in terms of the linked discourses of kastom, church and modernity. It therefore explores gender relations in terms of the contemporary entanglement of indigenous and exogenous epistemologies, and in doing so argues that the contextual analysis of ‘rights’ should consider the specific historical, political and socio‐cultural circumstances in which they are put to use.  相似文献

Melt‐coated films of poly(fluoroalkylacrylate)s and poly(fluoroalkylmethacrylate)s have been exposed respectively to bacterial cultures (Pseudomonas spp., Alteromonas sp. NCIMB 1534 and Desulphovibrio alaskensis NCIMB 13491), Enteromorpha zoospores and cyprid larvae of Balanus amphitrite Darwin. In all experiments, settlement and development was considerably less on the films than on controls of glass, poly‐(methylmethacrylate), poly(tetrafluoroethene) (ptfe) and polyester/glassf ibre composite. The settled bacteria were also much more weakly attached to the fluoropo‐lymer films than to the controls. Enteromorpha zoospores tended to settle at surface faults/cracks and also showed some sensitivity to the fluorine content of the materials. Cyprids did not settle on ptfe and could find only occasional sights for attachment on the films. Although the fluoropolymers show promise as fouling‐resistant coatings, improvements in film quality are required.  相似文献

The proposal in this study was to evaluate the physical properties of different biopolymers films. The materials used were: pectin, carboxyl methylcellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxyl propylcellulose, hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose, and corn waxy starch; from these polysaccharides aqueous dispersions were prepared to 3% (w/v) for obtained films. In these biopolymer films, the thermal diffusivities (α) was evaluated by the Open Photoacoustic Cell method; also, their mechanical properties as tensile strength, elongation, and Young’s modulus were measured, their crystallinity percentage was evaluated by X-ray diffraction and microstructure through atomic force microscopy in contact mode. From the polysaccharide films, it was observed that most of them were flexible and transparent. In the case of the films, mechanical properties were found that the highest value of tensile strength and Young’s modulus corresponded to carboxyl methylcellulose with 69.17 and 1,912.20 MPa values, respectively. Also, Open Photoacoustic Cell method and X-ray diffraction measurements showed that there exist a correlation between the thermal diffusivity values and the crystallinity measured in the biopolymer films. It was also observed that α values of cellulose derived was affected by the substitution group in the molecule, reaching the highest α value, the films of carboxyl methylcellulose. Regarding the microstructural of the films, starch showed the highest roughness value (88.6 nm) whereas hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose resulted with the lowest roughness value (7.67 nm).  相似文献

The potential driving force(s) of the vertical distribution of subtidal barnacle Balanus trigonus Darwin were investigated using both field and laboratory experiments. Early juveniles (∼24 h old) placed in intertidal [∼0.5 m above mean low water level (MLWL)] and subtidal (∼3 m below MLWL) habitats survived equally well, indicating that the intertidal absence of B. trigonus in Hong Kong waters was not determined by differential mortality. However, enhanced attachment of cyprids in subtidal habitats indicated the importance of differential larval choice in determining their vertical distribution. In the laboratory, cyprids preferred to attach in response to subtidal microbial films, which may implicate microbial films as a primary cue in driving the adult vertical distribution. Microbial films developed in these two habitats differed in their biomass (=total organic carbon), abundance of bacteria and diatoms (determined by fluorescence microscopy), and bacterial diversity (determined by DNA fingerprinting analysis). For example, 6-day films in subtidal habitat had a significantly higher biomass than in films from intertidal habitat (P<0.05). There was no difference in the biomass of films from these two habitats in 9-day films (P>0.05); however, bacterial abundance was greater in subtidal films than in intertidal films, irrespective of the age of the film, although there was no difference in diatom abundance in films from these two habitats. Neither the abundance of bacteria and diatoms nor the biomass correlated with the attachment preferences of cyprids. This study has not provided any data to prove the existence of inductive and inhibitive (to cyprid attachment) bacterial species in subtidal and intertidal films, respectively; however, results indicate that bacterial community provided qualitative information that might explain the preferential attachment of B. trigonus cyprids in subtidal habitat.  相似文献

In this article, I describe and analyze the ways in which the Other is represented in three of Jean Rouch's earlier films. After briefly outlining Rouch's relationship to the cinema of Robert Flaherty, I look closely at Les magiciens de Wanzerbé [1948], Les maîtres fous [], and Jaguar [], and argue that these films exhibit a progression from a conventional, colonialist mode of documentary practice to a more open, polyvocal, collaborative form. I conclude by suggesting that this transition constitutes a shift from the attempt to represent that which can never be adequately represented to the evocation of it.  相似文献

Microscopic foam films from suspensions of small unilamellar dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) vesicles have been obtained. The film formation is facilitated at temperatures above the gel-liquid crystalline transition of DMPC. A detailed study of the dependence of equilibrium thickness of DMPC foam films on electrolyte concentration at constant capillary pressure and a direct measurement of the disjoining pressure isotherm has been carried out. Formation of thick equilibrium horizontal microscopic films stabilized with DMPC at low external pressures and low electrolyte concentrations was found and interpreted as being due to the existence of long-range electrostatic interactions in these films. A diffuse electric layer potential of 36 mV has been calculated. The DMPC films have been compared to films obtained from non-ionic surfactant solutions where the long range electrostatic repulsion is explained as being due to specific adsorption of OH at the film interfaces. However, unlike the results obtained for surfactant films, in this study formation of common black films and thinning of the DMPC Newton film with pressure have been observed. In the early 1990s, a new cycle of films emerged that depicted complex portrayals of the lives of African-Americans in the neighbourhoods in which they lived. This so-called ‘hood genre was quite radical in its foregrounding of structural racism and police violence. But Hollywood's marketing of these films muted this radical content by directly contradicting explicit signifiers in the films’ story worlds. While many of the ‘hood films take place on the urban fringe and in suburbs, their promotional materials worked to confine the action, to a mythic ‘inner city'.

This essay studies the two most popular films of the genre, Boyz n the Hood and Menace II Society, to illustrate how ‘paratexts' redistricted 'hood films. Through a comparative analysis of the films and their promotional materials, this essay argues Hollywood marketed a racialized ‘imaginative geography' for this important genre of African-American cinema.  相似文献

Jamie Uys's The Gods Must be Crazy and its sequel films are icons of South African entertainment, perceived both as hilarious comedy and blatant apartheid propaganda. Three further sequels, made from Hong Kong by Chinese directors, are hardly known in South Africa. These films are particularly interesting from a cultural point of view, as they portray Orientals (and white South Africans) from an Oriental perspective and San Bushmen from a position that is neither Western nor set in an apartheid/post-apartheid South African context. The current context of globalization in which cultures are expressed and negotiated creates an interesting space for the analysis of these “multicultural” films. This article examines these films especially, Crazy Safari, and discusses them in terms of responses from focus groups, one of Taiwanese viewers in Durban, and another of Kenyans in Kenya.  相似文献

Saffron, a plant from the Iridaceae family, is the world’s most expensive spice. Gamma irradiation and silver nano particles whose uses are gradually increasing worldwide, have positive effects on preventing decay by sterilizing the microorganisms and by improving the safety without compromising the nutritional properties and sensory quality of the foods. In the present study combination effects of gamma irradiation and silver nano particles packaging on the microbial contamination of saffron were considered during storage. A combination of hurdles can ensure stability and microbial safety of foods. For this purpose, saffron samples were packaged by Poly Ethylene films that posses up to 300 ppm nano silver particles as antimicrobial agents and then irradiated in cobalt-60 irradiator (gamma cell Model: PX30, dose rate 0.55 Gry/Sec) to 0, 1, 2,3 and 4 kGy at room temperature. The antimicrobial activities against Total Aerobic Mesophilic Bacteria, Entrobacteriace, Escherichia Coli and Clostridium Perfringines were higher in the irradiated samples, demonstrating the inhibition zone for their growth. Irradiation of the saffron samples packaged by Poly Ethylene films with nano silver particles showed the best results for decreasing microbial contamination at 2 kGy and for Poly Ethylene films without silver nano particles; it was 4 kGy.  相似文献

Structured around the idea that there is a non-linguistic and cross-cultural, possibly biological, basis on which the understanding of pictures rests, this essay looks at the ways whereby images in documentary films challenge the notion of cultural difference. Drawing on Said's Orientalism [1978] and its impact on the basic assumptions of anthropologists, the essay stresses Said's relevance to documentary film theorists, and discusses the work of visual anthropologists and filmmakers influenced by Merleau-Ponty's ideas about the phenomenology of perception. Discussion suggests that the kind of knowledge disclosed by revelatory films represents an important answer to one of the fundamental epistemological issues that Said does not take up in Orientalism, namely the question of the materialization of an “authentic human encounter” not subjugated to the dead book. The essay implies that we should have no objection in principle to the self/other dichotomy when it is used intelligently.  相似文献

Urtica L. (Urticaceae) is generally reported as a genus of monoecious and dioecious taxa. However, the gender information found in the literature does not at all reflect the actual diversity of gender patterns in Urtica. Dioecy appears to be truly absent from Urtica, but otherwise there has been a major diversification in the geometry of gender and no comparable patterns exist in other plant groups. Thus, we here define technical terms for all unique architectural types of monoecy found in Urtica and closely related genera and reconstruct the ancestral gender states in a Bayesian framework. Our studies are based on a near‐comprehensive sampling, including 61 of the 63 Urtica species recognized. We report polygamy, two types of gynodioecy and five different architectural types of monoecy. A total of 15 switches appear to have taken place within the genus. Although gender characteristics have diversified strongly, they are relatively conserved within clades. Monoecy is the predominant sexual system within Urtica and specifically basiandrous monoecy (i.e. basal inflorescence branches of each individual male only, apical branches female) is the most widespread type, reported for 11 different clades. In particular, it characterizes the basally branching pilulifera‐clade and the sister genus Zhengyia, and may thus represent the plesiomorphic condition for Urtica. Gender distribution and gross morphology appear to evolve largely independently from each other and gender distribution is largely independent of growth habit. However, polygamous taxa are most common amongst rhizomatous perennials (one‐third of the taxa).  相似文献

This article focuses on a corpus of Hindi films that, from a variety of ideological and generic viewpoints, articulate Hindi cinema's presentation of India's Partition trauma. It asserts that the cinematic mediation of this trauma appears symptomatic of the vicissitudes of larger discourses at work, and can be categorized into three phases with definite trajectories; wherein Partition first appears as a “denial,” where the traumatic episode becomes a Barthesian absence in the immediate aftermath of the Partition. Later, Partition reappears as “supracommunal trauma” transcending established national boundaries or spheres of sectarian interest in deference to the national conciliation project of Nehruvian secularism. In its third trajectory of the Hindutva milieu, films like Gadar and Hey Ram mark the “expropriation” of the Partition narratives from collective consciousness of experiences into a purely sectarian phenomenon.  相似文献

Chitosan films loaded with bacteriocin were examined by FTIR spectroscopy, tested for color, puncture strength, water vapor permeability, and as antimicrobials of Listeria innocua HPB13. Divergicin M35, a bacteriocin produced by Carnobacterium divergens, was incorporated into films made with chitosan of molecular mass 2 kDa, 20 kDa, or 100 kDa and de-acetylated either 87% or 95%. Only 100 kDa chitosan yielded films that could be peeled and handled easily. The higher degree of de-acetylation increased the total color factor (ΔE) of bacteriocin-loaded films, their permeability, and puncture strength. Incorporation of divergicin M35 into the films increased amide I peak intensity but otherwise did not induce significant structural change. The FTIR spectra of divergicin M35 shed from the films did not differ from those of the original free bacteriocin, except in overall peak intensity. The release of active divergicin M35 from the film was faster into the buffer than into tryptic soy broth and peaked at 10–12 h in both cases. Chitosan 95% de-acetylated and loaded with divergicin M35 was the most active, producing a six-log drop in Listeria innocua HPB13 viable count within 24 h. These results suggest that the biocompatible and biodegradable films developed here have the potential for application as antimicrobials of Listeria spp. in foods, especially ready-to-eat, minimally processed products.

Some results of our studios on transformation of steroids by mixed culture fermentation are presented in this paper. Arthrobacter simplex was paired in turn with each of the following: Streptomyces roseochromogenes, Curvularia lunata, Absidia coerulea, and Aspergillus ochraceus. The steroid substrates examined for multiple transformation were 16α-hydroxy-cortexolone, 16α-hydroxy-cortexolone 16,17-acetonide, 9α-fluorohydrocortisone, 9α-fluorohydrocortisone 21-acetate, and 9α-fluorohydrocortisone 21-hemisuccinate. The effects of media, steroid substrate, and microbial interaction in a mixed culture on the induction and repression of steroid transforming enzymes were unique to each case studied. The reaction mechanism of the multiple steroid transformation was also found to vary from one mixed culture system to another. Two different reaction mechanisms were observed, namely, consecutive and parallel. In the former, one of the two enzymatic reactions always preceded the other, while in the latter, two different enzyme reactions occurred simultaneously, thereby giving rise to two different intermediates. Multiple transformation of steroids by a single step mixed culture fermentation has potential economic advantages.  相似文献
