The Downton Series as the fourth Series of the Silurian System

A review of lithofacies and fossil distributions in the Downton strata of the Welsh Borderland and Wales indicates that these beds form a suitable basis for definition of a chronostratigraphical division of Series rank within the Silurian System. The basal boundary stratotype for the Downton Series is defined at the base of the Ludlow Bone Bed Member of the Downton Castle Sandstone Formation in a section at Whitcliffe Road, Ludlow. Shallow water marine sediments span the boundary, with no evidence of a measurable time break. Correlation of the base of the Downton Series from eastern North America through Baltoscandia and Poland suggests that it lies at or very close to the base of the Monograptus ultimus Biozone and thus approximates to the base of the Přiacute;dolí beds of Bohemia. Summary

The discovery of the fern Cystopteris dickieana Sim in Kincardineshire (the type locality of the species) during the mid- nineteenth century, an its supposed extirpation only twelve years after being first brought to public notice is described. The background to its apparent disappearance and subsequent reappearance are examined.     

The Film as an Art Form

In this article, the author explores the possibilities of teaching and learning through multiple-literacies in an arts environment. Acknowledging that technologies have a profound effect on our society, and often outpace our ability to properly assess or understand their implications, the author asserts that young people can become critical and active agents in their interactions with new media. Arts education, specifically theater education, is uniquely positioned to substantially contribute to these interactions between teachers and students that acknowledge and explore the new forms of literacy that are essential to navigating our contemporary culture. To this end, the author calls on arts educators to effectively engage with their students' multimodal concerns through interactions that value new multimodal literacies.     

The Village,a Transitional Film

The Village, probably the first observational film to have been completed, is a “transitional” film made in 1968 at UCLA. This was during a period of creative ferment there when the departments of Theater Arts and of Anthropology came together to explore the possibility of working out a new film language that would enable the production of films that might be more useful to anthropology. This article examines what this film offers that was new at the time, and considers to what extent it was also rooted in old forms.
