The conventional narrative of American environmentalism is no longer very helpful for conservationists and restorationists seeking philosophical justification and guidance for their work. The tradition has often been cropped into a narrower and simplified account of the battle between the philosophies of wise use and preservation, a move bolstered by the turn to historical images of President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir visiting California's Yosemite National Park in the early years of the twentieth century. This cropped conservation picture needs to be restored and widened to engage the pragmatism that has always been a part of the U.S. environmental tradition, but that became eclipsed by preservationist ideology with the rise of the fields of environmental history and environmental philosophy in the late twentieth century. Restoring this lost pragmatism to the environmental tradition will prove vital to recovering the value of environmental history and philosophy for conservation and restoration practice and to reclaiming a more holistic and useful narrative of people, culture, and environment.  相似文献

Spinitectus osorioi (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae) is described from the freshwater atherinids Chirostoma estor and Chirostoma attenuatum from Lake Pátzcuaro in the Mesa Central, Michoacán State, México. This nematode is characterized by a conspicuous protuberance on the ventral surface of the distal end of the long spicule that distinguishes it from its congeners in North America and in the neotropics. In addition, the species can be readily distinguished from 4 of the 5 nominal species of North American freshwater Spinitectus by the absence of either a terminal barb or heel on the short spicule and from Spinitectus mexicanus by the spination. Previous records of Spinitectus carolini from Chirostoma spp. in México (Lakes Pátzcuaro and Zirahuén) refer to S. osorioi, and the species appears to be specific to Chirostoma spp. The geological history of the Mesa Central drainages and the historical biogeography of freshwater atherinids in this region suggest that the origin of S. osorioi may be associated with either the marine history of their hosts or with host-switching from more distantly related freshwater hosts after colonization of freshwater environments by atherinids.  相似文献

Spider monkeys (Genus: Ateles) are a widespread Neotropical primate with a highly plastic socioecological strategy. However, the Central American species, Ateles geoffroyi, was recently re‐listed as endangered due to the accelerated loss of forest across the subcontinent. There is inconsistent evidence that spider monkey populations could persist when actively protected, but their long‐term viability in unprotected, human‐dominated landscapes is not known. We analyzed noninvasive genetic samples from 185 individuals in 14 putative social groups on the Rivas Isthmus in southwestern Nicaragua. We found evidence of weak but significant genetic structure in the mitochondrial control region and in eight nuclear microsatellite loci plus negative spatial autocorrelation in Fst and kinship. The overall pattern suggests strong localized mating and at least historical female‐biased dispersal, as is expected for this species. Heterozygosity was significantly lower than expected under random mating and lower than that found in other spider monkey populations, possibly reflecting a recent decline in genetic diversity and a threat from inbreeding. We conclude that despite a long history of human disturbance on this landscape, spider monkeys were until recently successful at maintaining gene flow. We consider the recent decline to be further indication of accelerated anthropogenic disturbance, but also of an opportunity to conserve native biodiversity. Spider monkeys are one of many wildlife species in Central America that is threatened by land cover change, and an apt example of how landscape‐scale conservation planning could be used to ensure long‐term persistence.  相似文献

We apply historical biogeography techniques to the macaques, baboons and their relatives (Primata: Papionini) and relate the inferred history of range shifts, and associated evolutionary events, to the latitudinal distribution of extant species, which is strongly tropical. The results of reversible parsimony, weighted ancestral area and dispersal-vicariance analyses all agree that Central Africa was part of the range of the ancestor of the tribe. Tropical regions with high current species richness (Central Africa, South-east Asia, Indonesia) have: (1) had a relatively long history of occupation, (2) experienced both a greater number and a greater average rate of speciation events and (3) given rise to more dispersal events to other regions. However, nested sister-taxon comparisons across the tribe show no overall association between differences in latitude and differences in rates of cladogenesis. Our historical reconstructions are largely consistent with previous hypotheses and fossil data, and suggest that both the passage of time since colonization and rates of cladogenesis have enhanced tropical species richness. Like commercial fishers everywhere, it seems, those living in coastal communities of Victoria perceive themselves to be under threat from recreational fishers, environmentalists, imposed management regimes, and modernisation and globalisation of the industry. In responding to these threats they appeal to conventional props of tradition—to continuity in genealogical time, affiliation with place and specialised knowledge and practice. This seems paradoxical, given that most established fishers in Victoria are first or second generation members of an industry that, through its 150‐year history, has been characterised by innovation and mobility. That paradox, we argue, is more apparent than real. Fisher identity is grounded primarily in engagement with an environment that is not familiar to outsiders. The paradox arises because fishers, like others who seek to sustain a future in the face of threat from outsiders, reshape strongly felt identity as tradition.  相似文献

The extent to which species richness patterns of the major palm subfamilies in the Americas are controlled by lineage history was studied. Based on the fossil record, we suggest that the subfamily Coryphoideae has followed a boreotropical dispersal route into Central and South America, whereas Calamoideae (tribe Lepidocaryeae), Ceroxyloideae and Arecoideae have Gondwana/South America-biased histories. However, Arecoideae has been present and diverse in both South and Central America at least since the early Tertiary. We used regression analyses to evaluate the relative importance of environmental factors and spatial variables (as substitutes for historical or other non-environmental factors) as determinants of geographical variation in species richness for each subfamily. Given the different lineage histories, we hypothesized that: (1) coryphoid richness should be least strongly controlled by the modern environment and exhibit a strong non-environmental bias towards Central and North America, reflecting its boreotropical invasion route, (2) calamoid species richness should exhibit a non-environmental bias towards South America, reflecting its long African–South American history, and (3) arecoid species richness should be most strongly environmentally determined, reflecting the long arecoid residency in both Central and South America. The regression analyses confirmed the hypothesized effects of lineage history on the geographical patterns in species richness. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was extracted and analyzed from the skeletal remains of 44 individuals, representing four prehistoric populations, and compared to that from two other prehistoric and several contemporary Native American populations to investigate biological relationships and demographic history in northeastern North America. The mtDNA haplogroup frequencies of ancient human remains from the Morse (Red Ocher tradition, 2,700 BP) and Orendorf (Mississippian tradition, 800 BP) sites from the Central Illinois River Valley, and the Great Western Park (Western Basin tradition, 800 BP) and Glacial Kame (2,900 BP) populations from southwestern Ontario, change over time while maintaining a regional continuity between localities. Haplotype patterns suggest that some ancestors of present day Native Americans in northeastern North America have been in that region for at least 3,000 years but have experienced extensive gene flow throughout time, resulting, at least in part, from a demic expansion of ancestors of modern Algonquian-speaking people. However, genetic drift has also been a significant force, and together with a major population crash after European contact, has altered haplogroup frequencies and caused the loss of many haplotypes.  相似文献

Background

Archaeologists and anthropologists have long recognized that different cultural complexes may have distinct descent histories, but they have lacked analytical techniques capable of easily identifying such incongruence. Here, we show how Bayesian phylogenetic analysis can be used to identify incongruent cultural histories. We employ the approach to investigate Iranian tribal textile traditions.

Methods

We used Bayes factor comparisons in a phylogenetic framework to test two models of cultural evolution: the hierarchically integrated system hypothesis and the multiple coherent units hypothesis. In the hierarchically integrated system hypothesis, a core tradition of characters evolves through descent with modification and characters peripheral to the core are exchanged among contemporaneous populations. In the multiple coherent units hypothesis, a core tradition does not exist. Rather, there are several cultural units consisting of sets of characters that have different histories of descent.

Results

For the Iranian textiles, the Bayesian phylogenetic analyses supported the multiple coherent units hypothesis over the hierarchically integrated system hypothesis. Our analyses suggest that pile-weave designs represent a distinct cultural unit that has a different phylogenetic history compared to other textile characters.

Conclusions

The results from the Iranian textiles are consistent with the available ethnographic evidence, which suggests that the commercial rug market has influenced pile-rug designs but not the techniques or designs incorporated in the other textiles produced by the tribes. We anticipate that Bayesian phylogenetic tests for inferring cultural units will be of great value for researchers interested in studying the evolution of cultural traits including language, behavior, and material culture.  相似文献

There is a long history of controversy in ecology over the role of competition in determining patterns of distribution and abundance, and over the significance of the mathematical modeling of competitive interactions. This paper examines the controversy. Three kinds of considerations have been involved at one time or another during the history of this debate. There has been dispute about the kinds of regularities ecologists can expect to find, about the significance of evolutionary considerations for ecological inquiry, and about the empirical credentials of theoretical studies of competition. Each of these elements is examined with an eye toward gaining philosophical clarification of the issues involved. In the process, certain shortcomings of contemporary philosophical theories are revealed. In particular, I argue that plausibility arguments based on background considerations are an important part of the model building tradition, but that current accounts of the structure and evaluation of scientific theories do little to illuminate this side of theoretical ecology.  相似文献

Population-based methods for the genetic mapping of adaptive traits and the analysis of natural selection require that the population structure and demographic history of a species are taken into account. We characterized geographic patterns of genetic variation in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana by genotyping 115 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers in 351 accessions from the whole species range using a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight assay, and by sequencing of nine unlinked short genomic regions in a subset of 64 accessions. The observed frequency distribution of SNPs is not consistent with a constant-size neutral model of sequence polymorphism due to an excess of rare polymorphisms. There is evidence for a significant population structure as indicated by differences in genetic diversity between geographic regions. Accessions from Central Asia have a low level of polymorphism and an increased level of genome-wide linkage disequilibrium (LD) relative to accessions from the Iberian Peninsula and Central Europe. Cluster analysis with the structure program grouped Eurasian accessions into K=6 clusters. Accessions from the Iberian Peninsula and from Central Asia constitute distinct populations, whereas Central and Eastern European accessions represent admixed populations in which genomes were reshuffled by historical recombination events. These patterns likely result from a rapid postglacial recolonization of Eurasia from glacial refugial populations. Our analyses suggest that mapping populations for association or LD mapping should be chosen from regional rather than a species-wide sample or identified genetically as sets of individuals with similar average genetic distances. Since intelligent design (ID) advocates claimed the ubiquitous mouse trap as an example of systems that cannot have evolved, mouse trap history is doubly relevant to studying material culture. On the one hand, debunking ID claims about mouse traps and, by implication, also about other irreducibly complex systems has a high educational value. On the other hand, a case study of mouse trap history may contribute insights to the academic discussion about material culture evolution. Michael Behe argued that mouse traps cannot trap mice with any part missing; therefore, they cannot have a precursor with one part less, therefore, cannot have a continuous history, and therefore, cannot have evolved. The patented and seminal precursor of current flat snap traps, however, had one part less, because spring and striker were formed of one wire. Secondly, historical records that reach back into the Bronze Age suggest that its history continued for a very long time. Thirdly, all prerequisites for evolution (variation, transmission, and selection) abound in mouse trap populations. Hence, Behe’s triple-jump conclusion about mouse traps is false each step. There is no, in principle, impossibility for mouse traps to evolve. An evolutionary account of mouse trap history also has academic merits beyond its educational value. Three important conclusions can be drawn: (1) reticulate phylogenies of artifact systems may be resolvable as overlapping, but branching, phylogenies of parts; (2) homologous ideas may be realized by analogous material, that is, phylogenies of information do not necessarily coincide with those of material parts; (3) recombination of parts between different artifact systems increases the cumulative nature of cultural evolution.  相似文献

The variability of mtDNA in four Far Eastern endemic species of the genus Tribolodon was studied in the significant part of their areas. There was no close relationship between the lifetime and the level of mtDNA variability. The relation between the population genetic structure and the level of amphidromic species was revealed. The presence of mtDNA phylogroup differed in three of the four species shows that there was a long period of independent intraspecific divergent evolution in the history of these species. This period falls on aproximately the same historical age, and, apparently, is caused by one and the same factors. The period was not enough long and ended in the integration of genetically independent units into a single species.  相似文献

Antiarch placoderms (Pisces, Placodermi, Antiarchi) from the Middle-Upper Devonian of Central and northern Asia (Asian part of the former Soviet Union) are described. Available antiarch specimens belong to 28 species (eight of which are described in open nomenclature), of 9 genera, 5 subfamilies, 6 families, 2 orders. The main localities of Middle-Late Devonian antiarchs are listed and provided with the data on stratigraphic distribution. The morphological structure of antiarchs and history of their study in Central and northern Asia are briefly considered. The principles of systematics and phylogeny of antiarchs, feature of their historical development in the Middle and Late Devonian of this area, and their paleozoogeographic relationships are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

By means of a contract with the National Park Service, and additional support from the University, the Department of Anthropology at the University of Kansas conducted archaeological salvage investigations in the northern part of the Tuttle Creek Reservoir of north-central Kan5as in 1957. Excavations were conducted at five sites, of which the Budenbender site (14P04) proved most productive. The present report describes excavations at Budenbender, the discoveries made, and interprets the data from the excavations in terms of current archaeological interest and taxonomic usages. The single house completely excavated at Sudanbender is identified as a component of the Central Plains tradition, and is placed in the Smoky Hill regional variant of that tradition.  相似文献

Aim To reconstruct the biogeographical history of New World emballonurid bats (tribe Diclidurini). Although bats are the second most species‐rich order of mammals, they have not contributed substantially to our understanding of the historical biogeography of mammals in the Neotropics because of a poor fossil record. In addition, being the only group of mammals that fly, bats typically have large distributions with relatively few species endemic to restricted areas that are amenable to vicariant biogeographical approaches. Location Central and South America. Methods Phylogenetic analysis for comparing trees (PACT) is a new algorithm that incorporates all spatial information from taxon area cladograms into a general area cladogram. There were nine biogeographical areas identified in Central and South America for New World emballonurid bats. Molecular dating was used to incorporate the temporal aspect of historical biogeography. This method was compared with dispersal–vicariance analysis (DIVA), which assumes vicariance as the default mode of speciation. Results Of the 45 speciation events in a fully resolved phylogeny, eight that were hypothesized by DIVA as vicariance were considered by PACT as two peripheral isolations and six within‐area events. DIVA was less parsimonious because it required six more post‐speciation dispersal events in addition to the 73 hypothesized by PACT. DIVA reconstructed a widely distributed ancestor, suggesting that most dispersal events occurred earlier, whereas the ancestral area for PACT based on character optimization was the Northern Amazon, suggesting that dispersal events were more recent phenomena. Main conclusions The general area cladogram from PACT indicated that within‐area events, and not vicariance, provide the major mode of speciation for New World emballonurid bats. There was no biological evidence supporting or rejecting sympatric speciation in New World emballonurid bats. However, the geological history, combined with fluctuations in temperature and sea level, suggested within‐area speciation in a changing and heterogeneous environment in the Northern Amazon during the Miocene. This scenario is similar to the taxon‐pulse hypothesis of biotic diversification, which posits repeated episodes of range expansions and contractions from a stable core area such as the Guiana Shield within the Northern Amazon.  相似文献

The apple is the most common and culturally important fruit crop of temperate areas. The elucidation of its origin and domestication history is therefore of great interest. The wild Central Asian species Malus sieversii has previously been identified as the main contributor to the genome of the cultivated apple (Malus domestica), on the basis of morphological, molecular, and historical evidence. The possible contribution of other wild species present along the Silk Route running from Asia to Western Europe remains a matter of debate, particularly with respect to the contribution of the European wild apple. We used microsatellite markers and an unprecedented large sampling of five Malus species throughout Eurasia (839 accessions from China to Spain) to show that multiple species have contributed to the genetic makeup of domesticated apples. The wild European crabapple M. sylvestris, in particular, was a major secondary contributor. Bidirectional gene flow between the domesticated apple and the European crabapple resulted in the current M. domestica being genetically more closely related to this species than to its Central Asian progenitor, M. sieversii. We found no evidence of a domestication bottleneck or clonal population structure in apples, despite the use of vegetative propagation by grafting. We show that the evolution of domesticated apples occurred over a long time period and involved more than one wild species. Our results support the view that self-incompatibility, a long lifespan, and cultural practices such as selection from open-pollinated seeds have facilitated introgression from wild relatives and the maintenance of genetic variation during domestication. This combination of processes may account for the diversification of several long-lived perennial crops, yielding domestication patterns different from those observed for annual species.  相似文献

This paper is about the interaction and the intertwinement between history of science as a historical process and history of science as the historiography of this process, taking molecular biology as an example. In the first part, two historical shifts are briefly characterized that appear to have punctuated the emergence of molecular biology between the 1930s and the 1980s, one connected to a new generation of analytical apparatus, the other to properly molecular tools. The second part concentrates on the historiography of this development. Basically, it distinguishes three phases. The first phase was largely dominated by accounts of the actors themselves. The second coincided with the general ‘practical turn’ in history of science at large, and today’s historical appropriations of the molecularization of the life sciences appear to be marked by the changing disciplinary status of the science under review. In a closing remark, an argument is made for differentiating between long-range, middle-range and short-range perspectives in dealing with the history of the sciences.  相似文献

This study reevaluates the hypothesis in Demarchi et al. (2001 Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 115:199-203) that Gran Chaco peoples demonstrate a unique pattern of genetic diversity due to a distinct regional population history. Specifically, they found populations in the central part of the Gran Chaco, or Central Chaco, to have higher within- and lower between-population mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroup frequency variation compared to populations in other South American regions. To test this hypothesis of regional uniqueness, we applied analytical and simulation methods to mtDNA first hypervariable (HVI) region sequence data from a broad set of comparative South and Central American population samples. Contrary to the results of Demarchi et al. (2001 Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 115:199-203), we found that the Gran Chaco's regional within-population diversity is about average among regions, and populations are highly differentiated from each other. When we limited the scale of analysis to the Central Chaco, a more localized subregion of the Gran Chaco, our results fell more in line with the original findings of Demarchi et al. (2001 Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 115:199-203). Still, we conclude that neither the Gran Chaco regional pattern, nor the Central Chaco subregional pattern, is unique within South America. Nonetheless, the Central Chaco pattern accords well with the area's history, including pre-European contact lifeways and the documented historical use of the area as an interregional crossroads. However, we cannot exclude post-European contact disruption of traditional mating networks as an equally plausible explanation for the observed diversity pattern. Finally, these results additionally inform broader models of South American genetic diversity. While other researchers proposed an east-west continental division in patterns of genetic variation (e.g., Fuselli et al. 2003 Mol. Biol. Evol. 20:1682-1691), we found that in the geographically intermediate Central Chaco, a strict east-west divide in genetic variation breaks down. We suggest that future genetic characterizations of the continent, and subsequent interpretations of evolutionary history, involve a broad regional sampling of South American populations.  相似文献

This paper is the second part of a study into the mechanical effectiveness of a new intramedullary femoral nail (the Derby nail). The results of three point bending tests have shown that the Derby nail is stronger and stiffer than both the K and Zickel nails and offers advantages over the AO plate, despite the lattcr's higher load carrying ability when used on the compressively loaded bone face. Previous work by the authors has shown the Derby nail to be superior in torsional loading and it is felt that this intramedullary device offers sound clinical advantages over the other designs, this being confirmed by extensive clinical trials.  相似文献

A primary goal of conservation genetics is the discovery, delimitation and protection of phylogenetic lineages within sensitive or endangered taxa. Given the importance of lineage protection, a combination of phylogeography, historical geology and molecular clock analyses can provide an important historical context for overall species conservation. We present the results of a range-wide survey of genetic variation in the California tiger salamander, Ambystoma californiense, as well as a summary of the past several million years of inundation and isolation of the Great Central Valley and surrounding uplands that constitute its limited range. A combination of population genetic and phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA variation among 696 samples from 84 populations revealed six well-supported genetic units that are geographically discrete and characterized by nonoverlapping haplotype distributions. Populations from Santa Barbara and Sonoma Counties are particularly well differentiated and geographically isolated from all others. The remaining units in the Southern San Joaquin Valley, Central Coast Range, Central Valley and Bay Area are separated by geological features, ecological zone boundaries, or both. The geological history of the California landscape is consistent with molecular clock evidence suggesting that the Santa Barbara unit has been isolated for at least 0.74-0.92 Myr, and the Sonoma clade is equally ancient. Our work places patterns of genetic differentiation into both temporal- and landscape-level contexts, providing important insights into the conservation genetics of the California tiger salamander.  相似文献
