The genome sizes of 18 species of New Zealand triplefin fishes (family Tripterygiidae) were determined by flow cytometry of erythrocytes. The evolutionary relationships of these species were examined with a molecular phylogeny derived from DNA sequence data based on 1771 base pairs from fragments of three mitochondrial loci (12S and 16S ribosomal RNA, and the control region) and one nuclear locus (ETS2). Haploid genome sizes ranged from .85 pg (1C) to 1.28 pg with a mean of 1.15 +/- .01pg. Genome size appeared to be highly plastic, with up to 20% variation occurring within genera and a 50% difference in size between the smallest and the largest genome. No evidence was found to indicate polyploidy as a mechanism for speciation in New Zealand triplefins. Factors suggested to influence genome sizes of other organisms, such as morphological complexity, neoteny, and longevity, do not appear to be associated with shifts in the genome sizes of New Zealand triplefins.  相似文献

The effect of body size on spatial resource competition and reproductive isolation was examined in a sister species pair of subtidal triplefin fishes (F. Tripterygiidae) in New Zealand. Ruanoho decemdigitatus and Ruanoho whero have overlapping sympatric distributions and differ in body size, attaining a total length of 12 cm and 9 cm, respectively. R. decemdigitatus was most commonly found in sheltered areas shallower than 5 m, while R. whero was frequently found in sheltered to moderately exposed areas down to 20 m. In sites where the species co-occurred, R. whero was less associated with rock substratum. The effect of body size on substratum use was investigated using laboratory trials based on the field data to test habitat preference and competitive ability in a common setting. Reproductive behaviour was assessed in courtship, mate choice and hybridisation trials. Both species exhibited similar habitat preferences, but large R. decemdigitatus were dominant in inter- and intraspecific contests for the preferred rock habitat, while small R. whero were displaced into less preferred habitats. Courtship behaviour in R. whero was a subset of that displayed by R. decemdigitatus, while no mating behaviour was observed in heterospecific trials. Female R. whero showed a strong preference for smaller males, while female R. decemdigitatus had no preference for male size. Results suggest that body size differences in the Ruanoho pair are consistent with female choice for smaller males in R. whero and competition for habitat in both species. Body size in the Ruanoho species appears to be influenced by conflicting selection pressures that may differ between the species.  相似文献

Microalgal biofilms are sensitive to environmental conditions. Impacts of contaminants on assemblages of marine biofilm are often investigated in laboratories or in mesocosms. Such experiments are rarely representative of the effects of contaminants on biofilms under natural conditions. Studies in field situations, with enough power to detect impacts, are necessary to develop a better understanding of the effects of contaminants on ecological processes. Metals are a common contaminant of marine systems and can cause disturbances to assemblages. Using a new technique to experimentally deliver contaminants to microalgal assemblages, hypotheses were tested regarding the effects of zinc on microalgal biofilms growing on settlement panels in subtidal and intertidal habitats. PAM fluorometry was used to assess the amount and physiological state of biofilms on panels. Control panels deployed for 1 month in each habitat had significantly greater amounts of biofilm than those exposed to zinc. After deployment for 3 months, the results varied with location. The observed effects on the biofilm did not, however, cause significant changes in the macro-invertebrate assemblages that developed on the panels.  相似文献

There has been considerable interest in the directionality of resource specialisation during the diversification of lineages. We developed a quantitative method to investigate habitat specialisation in a radiation of New Zealand triplefin fishes, as habitat use appears to be an important axis of diversification in this marine group. The degree of specialisation in 15 species was calculated by comparing each individual to all other individuals of a species, thus allowing for quantitative distinction between species. Species differed in habitat specialisation, but Bayesian comparative methods found no directional trend in the evolution of resource use. Further analyses showed that specialisation had evolved gradually and was phylogenetically constrained, with most differences between species arising toward the tips of the tree. No correlation between the degree of specialisation and body size was detected in this group, suggesting that habitat specialisation evolved independently of body size. Habitat specialisation does not appear to have been an impediment to ecological diversification in this group. Rather, diversification in these fishes appears to have followed different evolutionary trajectories in habitat specialisation, one in which species have sub-partitioned available resources, and another in which species have expanded their use of resources. These findings support recent studies suggesting that diversification does not necessarily proceed from generalised ancestors to specialised descendants.  相似文献

This paper presents information on the biochemical properties (via starch gel electrophoresis) of 26 marine species (15 fish and 11 invertebrates). Evidence is presented on 48 polymorphisms found in the 26 species. Estimates of the proportion of the genome heterozygous per individual per species were calculated and ranged from 0.000 to 0.176 for the invertebrates and from 0.000 to 0.074 for the fish species. Estimates of the percentage of loci polymorphic per species for invertebrates were 0 to 54 %; for the fish species, the range was 0 to 20 %.  相似文献

The relationship between pelagic larval duration (PLD) and population connectivity in marine fishes has been controversial, but most studies to date have focused on tropical taxa. Here, we examine PLD in 11 species of triplefin fishes from a temperate environment in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, to describe daily increment patterns and settlement marks in the otoliths. The formation of daily increments was validated using larvae of known age and tetracycline marking of settled juveniles. Settlement mark identity was verified by comparing total increment counts from otoliths of recently settled fishes with PLD counts from post-settlement fishes. A similar pattern of three groups of increments across the otolith was found in all specimens examined. The settlement mark was similar in all species and occurred as a sharp drop in increment width within the area of transition in optical density. PLD was lengthy, compared to species of triplefins from elsewhere, and ranged between 54.4 ± 1.7 SE days in Bellapiscis lesleyae to 86.4 ± 2.6 SE days in Forsterygion malcolmi. Variation in PLD within species was high but did not mask interspecific differences. PLD was not phylogenetically constrained, as sister species differed significantly in PLD. PLD was compared with genetic population connectivity for eight of the study species using mitochondrial gene flow data from Hickey, Lavery, Hannan, Baker, Clements. Mol Ecol 18:680–696 (2009). The observed lack of correlation between PLD and gene flow suggests that dispersal is limited by other factors, such as larval behaviour and the availability of settlement habitat.  相似文献

Balanids are the numerically dominant epibionts on mussel beds in the Wadden Sea. Near the island of Sylt (German Bight, North Sea), Semibalanus balanoides dominated intertidally and Balanus crenatus subtidally. Field experiments were conducted to test the effects of predation on the density of barnacle recruits. Subtidally, predator exclusion resulted in significantly increased abundances of B. crenatus, while predator exclusion had no significant effects on the density of S. balanoides intertidally. It is suggested that recruitment of B. crenatus to subtidal mussel beds is strongly affected by adult shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) and juvenile starfish (Asterias rubens), whereas recruits of S. balanoides in the intertidal zone are mainly influenced by grazing and bulldozing of the very abundant periwinkle Littorina littorea, which is rare subtidally. Aquatic and aerial respiration of the amphibious fishes Lipophrys pholis and Periophthalmus barbarus were examined using a newly designed flow-through respirometer system. The system allowed long-term measurements of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide release during periods of aquatic and aerial respiration. The M o 2 of L. pholis , measured at 15° C, was 2·1 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aquatic and 1·99 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aerial exposure. The corresponding values of the M co2 were 1.67 and 1.59 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 respectively, giving an aquatic respiratory exchange ratio (RER) of 0·80 and an aerial RER of 0·79. The M o2 of P. barbarus , measured at 28°C, was 4·05 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aquatic and 3·44 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aerial exposure. The corresponding values of the Mco2 were 3·29 μmol CO2 g–1 h–1 and 2·63 μmol CO2 g–1 h–1 respectively, giving an aquatic RER of 0·81 and an aerial RER of 0·77. While exposed to air for at least 10 h, both species showed no decrease in metabolic rate or carbon dioxide release. The RER of these fishes equalled their respiratory quotient. After re-immersion an increased oxygen consumption, due to the payment of an oxygen debt, could not be detected.  相似文献

Geographic variability in the physiological attributes of widely distributed species can be a result of phenotypic plasticity or can reflect evolutionary responses to a particular habitat. In the field, we assessed thermal variability in low and high intertidal pools and the distribution of resident fish species Scartichthys viridis and transitory Girella laevifrons along this vertical intertidal gradient at three localities along the Chilean coast: Antofagasta (the northernmost and warmest habitat), Carrizal Bajo (central coast) and Las Cruces (the southernmost and coldest habitat). In the laboratory, we evaluated the thermal sensitivity of fish captured from each locality. The response to temperature was estimated as the frequency of opercular movements and as thermal selectivity in a gradient; the former being a indirect indicator of energy costs in a particular environment and the latter revealing differential occupation of habitat. Seawater temperature in intertidal pools was greatest at Antofagasta, and within each site was greatest in high intertidal pools. The two intertidal fish species showed opposite patterns of local distribution, with S. viridis primarily inhabiting the lower sectors of the intertidal zone, and G. laevifrons occupying the higher sectors of the intertidal zone. This pattern was consistent for all three localities. Locality was found to be a very important factor determining the frequency of opercular movement and thermal selectivity of both S. viridis and G. laevifrons. Our results suggest that S. viridis and G. laevifrons respond according to: (1) the thermal history of the habitat from which they came, and (2) the immediate physical conditions of their habitat. These results suggest local adaptation rather than plasticity in thermoregulatory and energetic mechanisms.  相似文献

In contrast to other mammals, muscarinic receptors in the bat ventricle can mediate significant decrease in basal contractile force (greater than 50%), not only at 37 degrees C but also at hibernation temperature (12 degrees C). At frequencies of contraction that approximate in vivo values for 37-12 degrees C, no significant shift in receptor affinity or maximum response to applied acetylcholine was found for either ventricular or atrial muscle. Low temperature does not appear to compromise receptor function in hibernators. The atypical cholinergic innervation of the ventricle may maintain a regulative role during hibernation.  相似文献

This paper presents a comparative analysis of territoriality in three intertidal (Lipophrys pholis, Coryphoblennius galerita, Salaria pavo) and two subtidal (Tripterygion delaisi, Parablennius pilicornis) blennioid fishes. Focal-animal observations of males guarding eggs showed that: (i) intertidal species had smaller territories that were less frequently patrolled; (ii) in subtidal species feeding was limited to the territory, while in intertidal fishes a substantial proportion of the feeding acts occurred outside the defended area; (iii) intertidal species spent less time out of the nest and showed a lower level of locomotory activity; (iv) subtidal species were subjected to a higher number of territorial intrusions with more species intruding their territory, some of them potential egg predators; (v) subtidal species performed several water column displays that played a significant role in courtship, while in intertidal fishes these displays are almost absent. Signalling without the presence of a female was almost absent in intertidal species. It is argued that intertidal fishes minimize the time spent out of the nest and the loss of contact with the substrate, features that may be of high survival value in conditions of strong turbulence. Although intertidal species have a reduced time available for feeding, this may be compensated by lower levels of locomotory activity, territorial defense and risk of egg predation. Haemoglobin components were analysed for nine species of New Zealand triplefins and their isoelectric points (pI) ranged from 5.1 to 7.0. The number of well-expressed isohaemoglobins was larger in shallow-water and tidal pool species, ranging from four in Grahamina signata to eight in Grahamina capito, and were relatively cathodal. Two strongly anodal isohaemoglobins were expressed in the mid-depth species Ruanoho decemdigitatus and Ruanoho whero, and one in the deeper water species Karalepis stewarti and Forsterygion malcolmi. The red blood cell oxygen-binding properties were determined at 15 °C and 25 °C in the pH range 6.7–7.9 for the shallow-water species G. capito, the shallow to mid-depth species Forsterygion varium, and the deep-water species F. malcolmi. Oxygen affinity was highest for G. capito and the magnitude of the Bohr effect lower (Δlog P 50/ΔpH = −0.37 at 25 °C, where P 50 is the half-saturation coefficient) compared to the two Forsterygion species (Δlog P 50/ΔpH = −0.52 to −0.59). Further, the cooperativity factor, n 50, was lower in G. capito thus maintaining oxygen transport over a wide range of environmental oxygen pressures. Oxygen binding was similarly influenced by temperature in both G. capito and F. malcolmi (maximum heat of oxygenation ΔHmax = −27 kJ mol−1 and −37 kJ mol−1, respectively). Thus, triplefin fishes living in shallow, thermally unstable habitats possess a greater number of cathodally migrating isohaemoglobins, and their red blood cells have a higher oxygen affinity and reduced cooperativity which is less sensitive to changes in pH than do species occurring in more stable, deeper water habitats. Our analysis of an assemblage of closely related species circumvents some of the difficulties inherent in studies where interpretation of experimental results is confounded by phylogeny. Synopsis Distribution patterns and relative abundances were determined for rocky intertidal fishes in central California. Distributions were described relative to a categorization scheme of tidepools based on certain biotic and physical criteria. The fishes displayed a variety of distributions over tidepool categories and showed some segregation within categories.Cottids were the predominant tidepool fishes encountered, withOligocottus snyderi andClinocottus analis comprising 62% of all captures. The cebidichthyidCebidichthys violaceus and the stichaeidAnoplarchus purpurescens were also relatively common and dominated the out-of-water microhabitat.Oligocottus snyderi showed a minor shift in distribution over tidepool categories between seasons, and C. analis showed none, but both species varied substantially in abundance. Temporal changes in abundance of the more common species indicated seasonal trends, but the duration of the census period was insufficient to verify this.It is concluded that while species interactions may have influenced the observed patterns of habitat partitioning, the roles of predation and competition cannot be unambiguously defined. Presently, neither these nor historical factors can be discounted from having significantly influenced the evolution of the intertidal fish community.  相似文献

Aim Encrusting faunal communities on rocks were examined from Southern Ocean intertidal and subtidal (6 m) zones to investigate potential change with latitude. Location The site locations were South Georgia (54°S [sub-Antarctic]), Signy Island (60.5°S [maritime Antarctic]) and Adelaide Island (68°S [high Antarctic]). Methods The number of taxa, degree of colonization and bryozoan growth and mortality were measured. Results The communities present were relatively simple in terms of composition and interactions. Spirorbid polychaetes (Annelida) and cheilostomatid bryozoans were the principal components. The community simplicity and dominance of unitary (compared to colonial) fauna increased with latitude. Mean annual mortality of subtidal cheilostomatids also significantly increased with latitude. The number of bryozoan species and potential aspects of community complexity increased with latitude. The growth of the bryozoan Inversiula nutrix increased with latitude reversing the general trend of decreased growth rate. Conclusions These findings suggest that disturbance may significantly increase with latitude within the Southern Ocean. The apparent reversal of typical latitudinal growth trends is probably a result of classical island biogeography, with species decreasing away from a centre of high diversity.  相似文献

Parvalbumin (PV) is a soluble calcium-binding protein that is especially abundant in fast-twitch muscles of fish and other lower vertebrates. Despite its prevalence in ectothermic taxa, few data address the effects of temperature on PV binding function. In this study, calcium dissociation constants (KD) were measured as a function of temperature (0-25 degrees C) for PV from two Antarctic (Gobionotothen gibberifrons and Chaenocephalus aceratus) and two temperate zone fish species (Cyprinus carpio and Micropterus salmoides). Measurements by fluorometric competitive binding assay show that KD values for PVs from the Antarctic species were significantly higher at all assay temperatures and were less sensitive to temperature relative to carp and bass. However, estimates of KD are fundamentally similar for PVs from the Antarctic and temperate zone species when examined at their native physiological temperature. Variation in pH and ionic strength within a physiologically relevant range had only modest effects on KD. Thermodynamics of calcium binding to PV from G. gibberifrons and C. carpio was measured by isothermal microcalorimetry. When measured at 15 degrees C, the Gibbs free energy change (deltaG) was significantly greater for calcium binding to PV from G. gibberifrons than from carp (-43.4+/-1.5 kJ mol(-1) and -46.6+/-3.0 kJ mol(-1), respectively), and the relative contribution of entropy to deltaG for calcium binding to PV from the Antarctic species was about twice that of carp (deltaS=16.0+/-0.8 J degrees C(-1) mol(-1) for G. gibberifrons; deltaS=7.5+/-0.8 J degrees C(-1) mol(-1) for C. carpio).  相似文献

Metabolic potential and muscle development were investigated relative to habitat and phylogeny in seven species of New Zealand triplefin fishes. Activity was measured in three principal glycolytic enzymes (lactate dehydrogenase, pyruvate kinase and phosphofructokinase) and two oxidative enzymes (citrate synthase and L3-hydroxyacyl CoA:NAD(+) oxidoreductase). The non-bicarbonate buffering capacity of caudal muscle was also estimated. Phylogenetic independent contrast analyses were used to reduce the effects of phylogenetic history in analyses. A positive relationship between metabolic potential and the effective water velocity at respective habitat depths was found only after the exclusion from analyses of the semi-pelagic species Obliquichthys maryannae. O. maryannae showed high glycolytic enzyme activities, and displayed double the activity of both oxidative enzymes relative to the six benthic species. Histochemically stained sections taken immediately posterior to the vent showed that adult O. maryannae and larval Forsterygion lapillum had significantly more red muscle, and smaller cross-sectional areas of white and red muscle fibres, than adults of benthic species. The distribution of red muscle in adult O. maryannae resembled that of larval F. lapillum, and differed from the typical teleost pattern seen in adults of the six benthic species. Both adult O. maryannae and larval F. lapillum have an expansive lateralis superficialis muscle, typical of larval fish, which encompasses much of the caudal trunk. Results suggest that anaerobic potential in New Zealand triplefins: (a) increases with the locomotory requirements of different habitats, and (b) displays a negative relationship with depth-dependent water velocities in benthic species. O. maryannae appears to have increased aerobic potential for sustained swimming by paedomorphic retention of larval muscle architecture.  相似文献

The temperature sensitivity of the human cardiac pacemaker was investigated during exhaustive exercise. From graded runs to exhaustion, we established the relationship between maximum exercise heart rate (HRmax) and rectal temperature (Tr). After warm-up periods of varying intensity and duration, four male subjects completed 4 to 6 runs each, each run performed on a separate day. For every subject there was a strong linear correlation between HRmax and Tr (r = 0.79 to 0.96). Various measures of the temperature sensitivity were: linear sensitivity, 8.8 +/- 4.3 beats min-1.degrees C-1; Q10, 1.6 +/- 0.4 and the Arrhenius constant, mu, 35.9 +/- 16.6 kJ.mol-1. At HRmax the value for linear temperature sensitivity was similar to, but the values for Q10 and mu lower than, those observed previously for intrinsic heart rate. Sympathetic influence on the cardiac pacemaker during exercise may cause this reduction, by shifting the pacemaker location to cells with a lower temperature sensitivity, or by altering a rate-limiting step determining the diastolic pacemaker potential.  相似文献
