The chemistry of the lemon-scented oil gland secretion ofCollohmannia gigantea, a middle-derivative mixonomatanoribatid mite, was investigated by gas chromatography – massspectrometry.Gas chromatographic profiles of whole body extracts of C.gigantea revealed two distinct chromatographic zones, the firstcontaining a set of six volatile compounds, comprising the lemon-scentedmonoterpene aldehydes neral and geranial, the scented monoterpene ester nerylformate, a distinctly scented aromatic aldehyde(2-hydroxy-6-methyl-benzaldehyde= 2,6-HMBD), and the two non-scented hydrocarbons, tridecane and pentadecane. All six components appeared to be present in steady relative proportions inscenting mites only, indicating their unity within the scented secretion. Incontrast, the components of the second chromatographic zone were less volatileand found in both, scenting and non-scenting mites. Chemically, they representaset of fatty acids of already known cuticular origin. The secretion bouquet ofthe first chromatographic zone was linked with oil glands by histochemicalmeans: large amounts of aldehydes were present only in oil gland reservoirs, notin any other region of the mite body. While chemical profiles of oil glandsecretions of several dozen astigmatid mites are known, only one other oribatidoil gland composition, from a desmonomatan species, has been elucidated, beingalmost the same as that of C. gigantea. Moreover, allcomponents of these two secretions are widely distributed amongst astigmatidmite species and may also be common in a restricted set of middle-derivativeoribatids. These findings are consistent with the idea of astigmatid miteoriginfrom a mixonomatan-desmonomatan group. 相似文献

The multicomponent oil gland secretion of Collohmannia gigantea, a middle-derivative mixonomatan oribatid mite, is demonstrated to possess alarm pheromonal and allomonal properties. Four components of the secretion, namely the monoterpenes neryl formate, neral, geranial and the aromatic 2-hydroxy- 6-methyl-benzaldehyde (2,6-HMBD), showed moderate to strong alarm pheromonal activity in adult mites. Naturally elicited response is due to neral (about 50% of the secretion) and probably 2,6-HMBD (only 5% of the secretion, but strong alarm pheromonal activity). This is the second report of an alarm pheromone in Oribatida. Tridecane and pentadecane (=the hydrocarbon fraction of the secretion) did not evoke evident behavioural reactions, and most likely serve as solvents and spreading agents for the pheromonal-active components. Alarm reactions were characterized by a short recognition phase (waving movements with legs I), followed by shrinking back and panic escape from the scent source. In addition, all six components of the oil gland secretion, including the hydrocarbons, exhibited strong allomonal properties against a model oribatid predator, the scydmaenid beetle, Euconnus (Tetramelus) oblongus. Considering the widespread semiochemical properties of oil gland secretions in astigmatid mites (=a highly derivative oribatid group), these results furnish evidence for a phylogenetically early origin of defensive and communicative roles of oil gland secretions in oribatids. These roles include alarm communication, defence and the production of anti-fungal compounds. 相似文献

The composition of oil gland exudates from two oribatid mites, Trhypochthoniellus sp. and Trhypochthonius
japonicus, was studied with reference to the related species Trhypochthoniellus
crassus. Trhypochthoniellus sp. contained a mixture of seven compounds; (Z,Z)-6,9-heptadecadiene, geranial, 3-hydroxybenzene-1,2-dicarbaldehyde (γ-acaridial),
neryl formate, neral, (Z)-8-heptadecene and geranyl formate in decreasing order of abundance. The profile of the components
from T. japonicus consisted of two types depending on the locality of sampling with unknown reason; one possessing a mixture of eight compounds
[(Z,E)-farnesal, γ-acaridial, (Z,Z)-6,9-heptadecadiene, (E,E)-farnesal, (Z)-8-heptadecene and geranial in decreasing order]
together with two unknown compounds, and the other composed of the same set of compounds together with 2-hydroxy-6-methylbenzaldehyde
as the most abundant component. Relative abundance among common components was consistent between the two types of T. japonicus. Profiles of components differed among three species including T. crasus. The phylogenetic relationship between Oribatida and Astigmata was discussed based on secretory compounds commonly distributed
between these two suborders.

We examined Ixodes ricinus embryos between 18 and 28 days of development with light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The differences
in inner structure attested to establish three successive developmental stages: days 18–20, day 23, and days 26–28. Between
18 and 20 days the embryos are at early stages of organogenesis. Salivary glands cannot be identified at that stage. In 23-day-old
embryos salivary glands are already outlined but the structure of alveoles is still different from that in larvae in which
the embryonic development has been completed. Gland cells start to form alveoles and become active between 26 and 28 days
of the development.

Morphology of the ontogenetic stages of the Neotropical oribatid mite Platynothrus altimontanus Hammer, [1958. Investigation on the Oribatid fauna of the Andes Mountains. I. The Argentina and Bolivia. Biol. Skr. Dan. Vid. Selsk. 10(1), 121] is described and illustrated based on specimens from Ecuador and compared with specimens from Venezuela, which is a new record of its distribution. Moreover it is compared with type material and holotype of the most similar species Platynothrus major Hammer, [1966. Investigations on the oribatid fauna of New Zealand. Teil 1. Biol. Skr. Dan. Vid. Selsk.15(2), 108]. On the basis of present studies there is a possibility that P. major is a junior synonym of P. altimontanus or its sibling species.Specimens were found in samples of moss, soil, litter and detritus from forest patch, below trees, near riverbank and of decomposing tree stump, from very wet accumulated litter at the rocks, under paramo grass and pillow-plants. All samples were collected from Ecuador (provinces Pichincha, Illiniza and Cotopaxi, at 2750–4200 m a.s.l.) and Venezuela. 相似文献

Astigmata comprise a diverse group of acariform mite species with a remarkable range of life histories, most of which involve
parasitic or commensal relationships with other organisms. Several authors have suggested that Astigmata evolved as a paedomorphic
clade from within Oribatida, and both morphology and gland-chemistry strongly suggest that their sister-clade is within the
oribatid subgroup Desmonomata. The biologies of these groups contrast greatly, since oribatid mites are mostly soil-living
detritivores and fungivores, and have life cycles that are much longer than those in Astigmata. We tested the hypothesis that
Astigmata evolved from within Desmonomata using two molecular markers, the ribosomal 18S region (18S) and the nuclear elongation
factor 1 alpha (ef1α) gene. Representative acariform mites included 28 species of Oribatida, eight of Astigmata, two of Prostigmata and two of
Endeostigmata; outgroups included members of Opilioacariformes, Parasitiformes and Ricinulei. To minimize the possibility
of long-branch attraction artifacts, we limited highly variable sites by removing gaps (18S) and third codon positions (ef1α) from the sequences. Maximum parsimony, neighbor-joining and Bayesian algorithms formed trees that consistently placed Astigmata
outside monophyletic Oribatida, usually as sister-group of the endeostigmatid mite Alicorhagia sp. Analyses with and without outgroups resulted in similar topologies, showing no evidence for long-branch artifacts and
leaving the conflict with morphological and biochemical data unexplained. 相似文献

Oribatid mites are primarily terrestrial. Only about 90 species (less than 1% of all known oribatid species) from 10 genera
are truly aquatic, with reproduction and all stages of their life cycle living in freshwater. Adaptation to aquatic conditions
evolved independently in different taxa. However, many terrestrial species can also be found in aquatic habitats, either as
chance stragglers from the surrounding habitats, or from periodic or unpredictable floodings, where they can survive for long
periods. In spite of their low species richness aquatic oribatids can be very abundant in different freshwater habitats as
in lentic (pools, lakes, water-filled microhabitats) or flowing waters (springs, rivers, streams), mainly on submerged plants.
The heavily sclerotized exoskeletons of several species enables subfossil or fossil preservation in lakes or bog sediments.

Paired, sac-like and typically large opisthonotal glands (syn. oil glands), mainly considered for chemical protection and communication, characterize the so-called 'glandulate Oribatida' which include the Parhyposomata, Mixonomata, Desmonomata and Brachypylina but also the Astigmata. Among these groups distinct evolutionary trends affect the morphology of glands and their secretion profiles, thereby rendering them highly informative characters with phylogenetic significance. One striking tendency, convergently occurring in a few glandulate groups, leads to the degeneration or even complete regression of opisthonotal glands. In this study, a first example of coherent evolutionary steps towards opisthonotal gland degeneration is described by using desmonomatan Camisiidae as a model: Opisthonotal glands in representatives of genus Platynothrus still show morphologically and chemically ancient conditions with fairly-well developed glandular reservoirs. Secretion patterns mainly consist of a characteristic set of terpenes and aromatics ('astigmatid compounds') as found in outgroups such as desmonomatan Trhypochthoniidae. Progressive states of regression of opisthonotal glands, along with a reduction of component-richness and amounts of secretions, occur in representatives of Heminothrus and, more conspicuously, in species of Camisia , most likely indicating a consistent evolutionary trend. This trend towards opisthonotal gland atrophy may be due to novel alternative and cheap strategies of passive defense in more-derivative camisiids – such as mechanical protection by encrustation of the cuticle – that possibly compensate for the lack of chemical defenses. 相似文献

Because of the medical and veterinary importance of ticks and the wide use of synthetic chemical substances such as permethrin (active ingredient of Advantage® Max3 – Bayer)for their control, this study evaluated the effects of different concentrations (206, 1031 and 2062 ppm) of the acaricide on the salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus semi-engorged females. Results showed that permethrin is a potent substance that acts morpho-physiologically in the tick glandular tissue, causing changes in the acini shape intense vacuolation in acinar cells, and disruption of the tissue by cell death process, with subsequent formation of apoptotic bodies, especially at higher concentrations, thus precluding the accurate identification of different types of acini. Importantly, it is demonstrated that permethrin acts on salivary gland tissue, as well as affecting the nervous system, accelerating the process of glandular degeneration, and interfering with the engorgement process of female ticks, preventing them from completing the feeding process. 相似文献

The tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus is currently considered an urban plague. For this reason many studies are intended to find methods to control these ectoparasites. Thus, the present study analyzed the ultrastructural modifications of the salivary glands cells of semi-engorged females of R. sanguineus resulting from their exposition to Fipronil (active ingredient of Frontline®). The studied individuals were divided into four groups. Group 1 was exposed to distilled water (control) and groups 2, 3 and 4 were exposed to 1, 5 and 10 ppm of Fipronil, respectively. The salivary gland of ticks subjected to the acaricide showed accelerated process of cell death by atypical apoptosis, as well as augmented cell damages as the concentration of the chemical compound was increased. The acaricide toxicity at cellular level was demonstrated by remarkable changes of elements of the cytoskeleton and spherocrystals (extremely hard inorganic structures). However, tick defense mechanisms, such as the observed autofagic vacuoles proved the cells attempt to preserve their integrity and minimize the devastating action of this chemical compound on the salivary glands. 相似文献

A checklist of identified oribatid mite taxa from riverine freshwater environments from six islands in Polynesia (New Caledonia, Tahiti, Moorea, Rurutu, Tubuai, Raiatea) is presented; 18 species, 16 genera and eight families were recorded. Trhypochthoniellus longisetus (Berlese, 1904) and Trimalaconothrus albulus Hammer, 1972 prevailed on distribution. Fortuynia smitisp. n. (Fortuyniidae) is described from New Caledonia. The new speciesis morphologically most similar to Fortuynia marina Hammen, 1960 from New Guinea, but it differs from the latter by the longer notogastral setae dm, lm, c2, p1, epimeral setae 3b and adanal setae ad1 and the presence of prodorsal lateral ridges. 相似文献

Four new species of oribatid mites of the genus Crotonia , ( C. pauropelor sp. nov., C. dicella sp. nov., C. lyrata sp. nov. and C. ecphylla sp. nov. ) are described from soil and plant litter from South Africa. Crotonia pauropelor, C. dicella and C. ecphylla are allied to the 'capistrata' species-group, previously known only from Queensland, Australia, in that they possess the full complement of c setae on the notogaster. They differ in having eight pairs rather than nine pairs of genital setae. In addition, C. ecpylla is unusual in the genus Crotonia in that it appears to possess two pairs of setae on each of the second epimera. Crotonia lyrata has only two pairs of c setae and is allied to the 'cophinaria' species-group. This is only the second published record of the genus Crotonia from South Africa, and the first of any named species. A key to the African Crotonia species is provided, which includes the only two previously known species C. alluaudi and C. rothschildi (Berlese, 1916). 相似文献

Summary The prosomal glands of Tetranychus urticae (Acari, Tetranychidae) were examined light and electron microscopically. Five paired and one unpaired gland are found both in females and males. The silk spinning apparatus consists of paired silk glands which extend laterally on both sides of the esophagus into the pedipalps. There, they enter the terminal silk gland bag which opens into a silk bristle at the apex of the pedipalps. The salivary secretions are formed in three paired glands which have an interconnecting duct, the podocephalic canal. The dorsal podocephalic glands may produce a serous secretion, the anterior podocephalic glands a mucous secretion, and the coxal organ may add a liquid, ion-rich secretion. These secretions pass the podocephalic canal and reach the mouth at the apex of the gnathosome. The function of the paired tracheal organs and the unpaired tracheal gland is still unclear. The tracheal gland may produce a secretion which facilitates the movement of the fused chelicerae and the stylets. This study was financed by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG Se 162/12) 相似文献

Liacarus subterraneus is a large, soil-dwelling oribatid mite species that possesses a conspicuously shiny, clean and not wettable cuticular surface. The exocrine cuticular chemistry of this species was investigated by means of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Besides a fraction of hydrocarbons and a terpene, hexane extracts of whole mite bodies exhibited free carboxylic acids and their glycerides as main components. The compounds were arranged in three distinct extract profiles. Based on data from individual extracts, (1) the majority (more than 3/4) of specimens showed large amounts of 1,2-dioctanoyl-glycerol (and three other related esters) but no (or only traces of) free carboxylic acids. (2) In about 1/8 of extracts, free acids (mainly octanoic (caprylic) acid) and glycerides were detected. This second type of profile highly varied with respect to the relative abundance of acids and esters. (3) The third profile (in about 7% of specimens) exclusively exhibited free acids and no (or only traces of) glycerides. In addition, a few extracts exhibited no components at all. The extract compounds most likely originate from the lipid layer of the cerotegument of L. subterraneus. The cuticle of individuals that possessed extractable cerotegumental compounds (profile I, II, III) exhibited strong water repellent properties, while the cuticle of individuals that possessed no components in their extract did not. After hexane extraction, water repellent properties got lost. The distinct extract profiles detected most likely portray the stepwise generation of an anti-wetting, exocrine surface lipid layer of glycerides: If this layer is lost, fatty acids may be discharged again (profile III) and may subsequently esterify (profile II) to larger and more stable esters (diacyl-glycerols), eventually building up the “raincoat” (mainly profile I) of L. subterraneus. 相似文献

This study showed the interference of esters extracted from Ricinus communis in the secretory cycle of salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks, which consequently caused collateral effects on their feeding process. Ticks attached on hosts which were fed with commercial feed containing different concentrations of R. communis oil esters suffered damages such as cytoplasmic changes in their salivary glands, notably in the acinar cells, impairing the functioning of the acini and accelerating the organs degeneration as a whole. It was found that esters interfered with the activity of cellular secretion by changing the glycoprotein of salivar composition especially in acini II cells. It was also shown that the damages caused by esters in the salivary glands cells of these ectoparasites increased in higher concentrations of the product and degenerative glandular changes were more pronounced. 相似文献
