The paper gives a bibliographical review of the finite element modelling and simulations in cardiovascular mechanics and cardiology from the theoretical as well as practical points of views. The bibliography lists references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations that were published between 1993 and 2004. At the end of this paper, more than 890 references are given dealing with subjects as: Cardiovascular soft tissue modelling; material properties; mechanisms of cardiovascular components; blood flow; artificial components; cardiac diseases examination; surgery; and other topics.  相似文献

Computational modelling of the cardiovascular system offers much promise, but represents a truly interdisciplinary challenge, requiring knowledge of physiology, mechanics of materials, fluid dynamics and biochemistry. This paper aims to provide a summary of the recent advances in cardiovascular structural modelling, including the numerical methods, main constitutive models and modelling procedures developed to represent cardiovascular structures and pathologies across a broad range of length and timescales; serving as an accessible point of reference to newcomers to the field. The class of so-called hyperelastic materials provides the theoretical foundation for the modelling of how these materials deform under load, and so an overview of these models is provided; comparing classical to application-specific phenomenological models. The physiology is split into components and pathologies of the cardiovascular system and linked back to constitutive modelling developments, identifying current state of the art in modelling procedures from both clinical and engineering sources. Models which have originally been derived for one application and scale are shown to be used for an increasing range and for similar applications. The trend for such approaches is discussed in the context of increasing availability of high performance computing resources, where in some cases computer hardware can impact the choice of modelling approach used.  相似文献

Background: Ischemic heart diseases now afflict thousands of Iranians and are the major cause of death in many industrialised countries. Mathematical modelling of an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) could provide a better understanding of its performance and help to represent blood flow and pressure in systemic arteries before and after inserting the pump.

Methods: A mathematical modelling of the whole cardiovascular system was formulated using MATLAB software. The block diagram of the model consists of 43 compartments. All the anatomical data was extracted from the physiological references. In the next stage, myocardial infarction (MI) was induced in the model by decreasing the contractility of the left ventricle. The IABP was mathematically modelled and inserted in the model in the thoracic aorta I artery just before the descending aorta. The effects of IABP on MI were studied using the mathematical model.

Results: The normal operation of the cardiovascular system was studied firstly. The pressure–time graphs of the ventricles, atriums, aorta, pulmonary system, capillaries and arterioles were obtained. The volume–time curve of the left ventricle was also presented. The pressure–time curves of the left ventricle and thoracic aorta I were obtained for normal, MI, and inserted IABP conditions. Model verification was performed by comparing the simulation results with the clinical observations reported in the literature.

Conclusions: IABP can be described by a theoretical model. Our model representing the cardiovascular system is capable of showing the effects of different pathologies such as MI and we have shown that MI effects can be reduced using IABP in accordance with the modelling results. The mathematical model should serve as a useful tool to simulate and better understand cardiovascular operation in normal and pathological conditions.  相似文献

The clinical examination of the cardiovascular systems efficiency based on methods of control theory demands favourable input signals and suitable response characteristics. In this paper by means of modelling it was intended to find aspects, which should allow to evaluate several test methods with regard to their correspondence to specific claims. A control model used for this purpose represents the baroceptor control of systemic arterial pressure by physical workload. Its alterations were considered in step, stair, ramp, and sinusoidal form. According to a judgement founded on theoretical and practical aspects, the aperiodic input changes prove to be advantageous. Especially the ramp test function seems to be suitable for selection of output components issuing from physical and mental parts of work-load.  相似文献

Background  

The aortic aneurysm is a dilatation of the aortic wall which occurs in the saccular and fusiform types. The aortic aneurysms can rupture, if left untreated. The renal stenosis occurs when the flow of blood from the arteries leading to the kidneys is constricted by atherosclerotic plaque. This narrowing may lead to the renal failure. Previous works have shown that, modelling is a useful tool for understanding of cardiovascular system functioning and pathophysiology of the system. The present study is concerned with the modelling of aortic aneurysms and renal artery stenosis using the cardiovascular electronic system.  相似文献

Summary The modelling of protein structures (whether isolated, in solution, or involved in recognition processes) is reviewed, free of any mathematical apparatus, to provide an overview of the concepts as well as leading references. A general feeling for this field of work is first established by a sampling of some impressions on its difficulties and chances of success. Then, the main body of this work examines the information available (databases and parameters), presents the theoretical foundations for the modelling procedures (with emphasis on the potential energy functions), surveys the existing simulation techniques and prediction methods, and discusses the problems still to be faced. Background

The coupling of pathways and processes through shared components is being increasingly recognised as a common theme which occurs in many cell signalling contexts, in which it plays highly non-trivial roles.

Results

In this paper we develop a basic modelling and systems framework in a general setting for understanding the coupling of processes and pathways through shared components. Our modelling framework starts with the interaction of two components with a common third component and includes production and degradation of all these components. We analyze the signal processing in our model to elucidate different aspects of the coupling. We show how different kinds of responses, including "ultrasensitive" and adaptive responses, may occur in this setting. We then build on the basic model structure and examine the effects of additional control regulation, switch-like signal processing, and spatial signalling. In the process, we identify a way in which allosteric regulation may contribute to signalling specificity, and how competitive effects may allow an enzyme to robustly coordinate and time the activation of parallel pathways.

Conclusions

We have developed and analyzed a common systems platform for examining the effects of coupling of processes through shared components. This can be the basis for subsequent expansion and understanding the many biologically observed variations on this common theme.  相似文献

Large-scale scientific computing applications frequently make use of closely-coupled distributed parallel components. The performance of such applications is therefore dependent on the component parts and their interaction at run-time. This paper describes a methodology for predictive performance modelling and evaluation of parallel applications composed of multiple interacting components. In this paper, the fundamental steps and required operations involved in the modelling and evaluation process are identified—including component decomposition, component model combination, M×N communication modelling, dataflow analysis and overall performance evaluation. A case study is presented to illustrate the modelling process and the methodology is verified through experimental analysis.

Patient-specific haemodynamic computations have been used as an effective tool in researches on cardiovascular disease associated with haemodynamics such as atherosclerosis and aneurysm. Recent development of computer resource has enabled 3D haemodynamic computations in wide-spread arterial network but there are still difficulties in modelling vascular geometry because of noise and limited resolution in medical images. In this paper, an integrated framework to model an arterial network tree for patient-specific computational haemodynamic study is developed. With this framework, 3D vascular geometry reconstruction of an arterial network and quantification of its geometric feature are aimed. The combination of 3D haemodynamic computation and vascular morphology quantification helps better understand the relationship between vascular morphology and haemodynamic force behind 'geometric risk factor' for cardiovascular diseases. The proposed method is applied to an intracranial arterial network to demonstrate its accuracy and effectiveness. The results are compared with the marching-cubes (MC) method. The comparison shows that the present modelling method can reconstruct a wide-ranged vascular network anatomically more accurate than the MC method, particularly in peripheral circulation where the image resolution is low in comparison to the vessel diameter, because of the recognition of an arterial network connectivity based on its centreline.  相似文献

The study of bi-directionally coupled oscillators is relevant in biological modelling of such systems as gastro-intestinal electrical activity, cardiac pacemarkers, cardiovascular and respiratory interactions and circadian rhythms. Interconnecting pathways in biological systems often exhibit pure time-delay characteristics. In this paper the multiple-mode limit-cycle behaviour of such systems is analysed using the method of harmonic blance. It is shown that the coupling time delay radically affects the number, frequency and amplitudes of entrained limit-cycles.  相似文献

Sparse coding is a popular approach to model natural images but has faced two main challenges: modelling low-level image components (such as edge-like structures and their occlusions) and modelling varying pixel intensities. Traditionally, images are modelled as a sparse linear superposition of dictionary elements, where the probabilistic view of this problem is that the coefficients follow a Laplace or Cauchy prior distribution. We propose a novel model that instead uses a spike-and-slab prior and nonlinear combination of components. With the prior, our model can easily represent exact zeros for e.g. the absence of an image component, such as an edge, and a distribution over non-zero pixel intensities. With the nonlinearity (the nonlinear max combination rule), the idea is to target occlusions; dictionary elements correspond to image components that can occlude each other. There are major consequences of the model assumptions made by both (non)linear approaches, thus the main goal of this paper is to isolate and highlight differences between them. Parameter optimization is analytically and computationally intractable in our model, thus as a main contribution we design an exact Gibbs sampler for efficient inference which we can apply to higher dimensional data using latent variable preselection. Results on natural and artificial occlusion-rich data with controlled forms of sparse structure show that our model can extract a sparse set of edge-like components that closely match the generating process, which we refer to as interpretable components. Furthermore, the sparseness of the solution closely follows the ground-truth number of components/edges in the images. The linear model did not learn such edge-like components with any level of sparsity. This suggests that our model can adaptively well-approximate and characterize the meaningful generation process.  相似文献

This paper presents some results on the modelling and the corresponding parameter estimation of the human shoulder. This system consists of the clavicle, the scapula, the humerus and the various joints between these bodies and the trunk through the sternum; it will be represented as a succession of a rotational joint between the sternum and the clavicle and a constant distance joint, representing the scapula between, the clavicle and the humerus head. The parameters of this system are the components of the position vectors of the joint characteristic points (the corresponding centres of the rotations). Objective To investigate the routine use of low dose aspirin in people aged ≥ 70 without overt cardiovascular disease.Design Epidemiological modelling in a hypothetical population.Setting Reference populations of men and women in the year 2000 from the state of Victoria, Australia.Subjects 10 000 men and 10 000 women aged 70-74 with no cardiovascular disease.Main outcome measures First ever myocardial infarction or unstable angina, ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and major gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Health adjusted years of life lived.Results The proportional benefit gained from the use of low dose aspirin by the prevention of myocardial infarctions (-389 in men, -321 in women) and ischaemic stroke (-19 in men and -35 in women) is offset by excess gastrointestinal (499 in men, 572 in women) and intracranial (76 in men, 54 in women) bleeding. The results in health adjusted years of life lived (which take into account length and quality of life) are equivocal for aspirin causing net harm or net benefit.Conclusion Epidemiological modelling suggests that any benefits of low dose aspirin on risk of cardiovascular disease in people aged ≥ 70 are offset by adverse events. These findings are tempered by wide confidence intervals, indicating that the overall outcome could be beneficial or adverse.  相似文献
