Indo-Pacific Lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) are venomous marine fishes in the family Scorpaenidae that invaded the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and western North Atlantic Ocean beginning in the mid-1980s. Lionfish are generalist, opportunistic predators that consume a variety of invertebrates and small reef fishes, such that the presence of Lionfish can significantly reduce reef fish abundance, diversity, and recruitment on invaded reefs. This study focused on the feeding ecology of Lionfish in Biscayne National Park (BNP), located in southeast Florida, USA. BNP consists of multiple marine habitats, including mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and limestone keys that support a diverse array of species resulting in multi-million dollar fishing and tourism industries. These habitats within BNP are at risk from the predatory impacts of invasive Lionfish. Through morphological prey identification of stomach contents, supplemented with DNA barcoding for identification of highly-digested prey items, Lionfish diet was analyzed and compared among fish sizes (immature, transitional and mature), BNP region (bay, shelf, and edge), and seasons (wet and dry). A total of 513 stomachs, containing more than 2600 prey items, were examined. We report that Lionfish in BNP fed predominantly on small reef fishes and small crustaceans, with a dietary shift from crustaceans to fishes occurring with increasing Lionfish size. Diets differed among BNP regions for medium-sized (100–179 mm) transitional Lionfish but not for large-sized (≥?180 mm) mature individuals. Furthermore, dietary differences between seasons were observed in mature Lionfish, but no seasonal differences were detected for smaller Lionfish (i.e., immature and transitional Lionfish). Based on the diet habits observed, Lionfish in BNP could have significant ecological and economic consequences for BNP and south Florida coastal habitats.  相似文献

Light is an important environmental regulator of diverse growth and developmental processes in plants. However, the mechanisms by which light quality regulates root growth are poorly understood. We analyzed lateral root (LR) growth of tobacco seedlings in response to three kinds of light qualities (red, white, and blue). Primary (1°) LR number and secondary (2°) LR density were elevated under red light (on days 9 and 12 of treatment) in comparison with white and blue lights. Higher IAA concentrations measured in roots and lower in leaves of plants treated with red light suggest that red light accelerated auxin transport from the leaves to roots (in comparison with other light qualities). Corroborative evidence for this suggestion was provided by elevated DR5::GUS expression levels at the shoot/root junction and in the 2° LR region. Applications of N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA) to red light-treated seedlings reduced both 1° LR number and 2° LR density to levels similar to those measured under white light; DR5::GUS expression levels were also similar between these light qualities after NPA application. Results were similar following exogenous auxin (NAA) application to blue light-treated seedlings. Direct [3H]IAA transport measurement indicated that the polar auxin transport from shoot to root was increased by red light. Red light promoted PIN3 expression levels and blue light reduced PIN1, 34 expression levels in the shoot/root junction and in the root, indicating that these genes play key roles in auxin transport regulation by red and blue lights. Overall, our findings suggest that three kinds of light qualities regulate LR formation in tobacco seedlings through modification of auxin polar transport.  相似文献

Responses of seed germination to air temperature, water potential, light, and smoke were studied in the laboratory for seeds of the invasive bunch grass Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link (syn. Cenchrus ciliare L.; buffel grass). First introduced to North America during the mid-twentieth Century for establishing pastures, this African bunch grass has become an invasive species of concern. Across all the experiments conducted, a low germination was observed for P. ciliare fascicles that never exceeded 30 % at 21 days after sowing. Optimal day/night air temperatures for germination, controlled with an environmental chamber, were 25/15 and 30/20 °C, while extreme temperatures of 15/5 and 45/35 °C inhibited germination. By sowing seeds of P. ciliare under different water potentials, created with aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol, an optimum of ?0.03 MPa led to the highest germination, while no germination was observed at ?1.0 MPa. Monochromatic optical filters were utilized to germinate seeds under various wavelengths, of which red (650 nm) and far red (730 nm) led to the highest germination. In addition, seeds that were incubated in the dark had higher germination than those incubated under white light. Incubation in smoke water, which can stimulate germination of pyrophytic species, resulted in a marginal inhibition of germination compared with imbibition with distilled water.  相似文献

Invasive species are a regional and global threat to biological diversity. In order to evaluate an invasive predator species’ potential to harm populations of native prey species, it is critical to evaluate the behavioral responses of all life stages of the native prey species to the novel predator. The invasion of the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) into southern California provides an opportunity to evaluate the predation risk and behavioral responses of native amphibians. We performed predation trials and explored prey behavioral responses to determine how this invasive predator may impact native amphibian populations using Pacific chorus frogs (Pseudacris regilla) as a representative native California prey species. We found that X. laevis will readily prey upon larval and adult life stages of P. regilla. Behavior trials indicated that both larval and adult P. regilla exhibit prey response behaviors and will spatially avoid the novel invasive predator. The results suggest that native anurans may have a redundant predator response in both the larval and adult life stages, which could reduce the predatory impact of X. laevis but also drive emigration of native amphibians from invaded habitat.  相似文献

We determined the effects of various light spectra (white, green, blue, and red) on the growth rate, biochemical composition, and fatty acid content of Tisochrysis lutea (Haptophyta, Isochrysidales) maintained in batch cultures. The growth rate peaked with white and blue light, and the lowest rate was observed with green and red light. The chlorophyll a content differed significantly between light spectra and growth phases—higher values were recorded with blue and red light in both growth phases. The proximal composition varied significantly with growth phases and light spectrum. In the exponential growth phase, protein content was significantly greater with blue light and in the stationary phase with green light. The level of carbohydrates in the exponential growth phase was significantly higher for white light, but unchanged in the stationary growth phase between light spectra. The lipid percentages were similar in the exponential phase but differed significantly in the stationary growth phase. The lipid percentages peaked in the stationary growth phase with red and green light. The highest eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) levels were seen in white light in the exponential growth phase and under green light in the stationary growth phase. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels were greatest in the exponential growth phase with red light and in the stationary growth phase with green light. Blue light increased the DHA content in both growth phases. We conclude that T. lutea alters its metabolic pathways and experience shifts in growth rate, proximate composition, and fatty acid content, depending on the type of light used.  相似文献

In most European freshwater ecosystems, the invasive gammarids Gammarus tigrinus and Dikerogammarus villosus strongly impair recipient communities through predation of a wide range of native invertebrates. Due to the effects of temperature on both the physiology and the behaviour of such ectotherms, understanding how global warming may influence their ecological impact is a research priority. These species were therefore exposed to three different food types to determine their detritivorous, herbivorous and carnivorous characters, and predation was measured characterizing the Holling’s functional response. The effect of increasing water temperatures (15, 20, 25°C) on both the food choice and predatory activities was investigated. Both species showed a significant preference for animal tissues at all temperatures. The total food intake increased with temperature for G. tigrinus but did not change for D. villosus, which may result from specific species differences in metabolic requirements. The consumption of live prey strongly increased with temperature. The main differences were an increased searching efficiency in G. tigrinus and a decreased handling time in D. villosus as temperature increased, which may result from differences in foraging strategies. These results suggest that climate change is likely to increase the predation pressure of both invasive gammarids on prey species.  相似文献

Refuges are fundamental to animal ecology as refuge availability affects many levels of biological organization—from the behavior and physiology of individuals to the interspecific dynamics of a community. Although frequently studied in the context of predator–prey interactions, refuges may also mediate interspecific competition between native and invasive taxa given the role of refuges as a valuable resource. Because interspecific interactions (e.g., competition and predation) can be modulated by temporal and biotic (e.g., trophic level) factors, we used a manipulative approach to investigate community-wide refuge-use patterns in the context of two important ecological factors: invasive species and seasonality. We surveyed refuge (artificial cover object) use of ants and vertebrates in a forest community for 2 years, and we systematically suppressed an established invasive species (red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta) to examine its impact on community refuge use. Native Camponotus ants appeared to co-exist and share refuges with S. invicta, but we found evidence for a negative effect of S. invicta on vertebrate refuge use that was also influenced by season. Vertebrates were more abundant under refuges undergoing suppression of S. invicta, and they were less abundant under refuges during the fall (the season characterized by the highest occupancy of refuges by S. invicta). Thus, researchers must continue to examine the entire community and to incorporate the effects of season when assessing the impact of invasive species (e.g., at our site, a survey conducted only in the summer or only on native ants would have indicated a negligible effect of S. invicta on community refuge use).  相似文献

Introductions of non-native predatory fishes can be a major driver of aquatic biodiversity loss. The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides (L.) has been introduced throughout much of the world, thereafter negatively affecting native faunal communities owing to its predatory impact. To investigate the environmental factors affecting the predatory performance of invasive bass, we examined the stomach contents and habitat characteristics of bass in 15 irrigation farm ponds in northeastern Japan. The food habits of the bass populations differed among the studied ponds: the predominant prey items were fishes among bass in seven of the ponds, whereas aquatic invertebrates (mainly insects and zooplankton) were the predominant taxa in the diets of bass in the eight remaining ponds, with the onset of piscivory related to body size. The results of multivariate analysis indicated that the extent to which the bass consumed fish was positively associated with fish prey abundance and negatively associated with percentage of aquatic vegetation coverage. We suggest that the extent of aquatic vegetation coverage strongly influenced the predation efficiency of bass in the ponds. These findings might be employed to assess a pond ecosystem’s vulnerability to invasive largemouth bass and to reduce the predator’s impact on native fish species by improvements to the habitat.  相似文献

Herbivore feeding on host plants may induce defense responses of the plant which influence other herbivores and interacting species in the vicinity, such as natural enemies. The present work evaluated the impact of pre-infestation with the tobacco whitefly Bemisia tabaci cryptic species MEAM 1, on the predation ability of the ladybird Propylea japonica, to the green peach aphid Myzus persicae, on tomato plants. The results show that B. tabaci pre-infestation density, duration, and leaf position, can impact prey consumed by P. japonica under various aphid densities. The aphids consumed by P. japonica in each treatment were fit using the Holling type II functional response equation. The predatory efficiency (a/T h) of P. japonica was the highest in the treatment with 60 aphids and 48-h infestation directly on damaged leaves. The predatory efficiencies of P. japonica decreased with a reduction of pre-infestation density and duration. We also observed that pre-infestation on young and undamaged leaves increased predation by P. japonica.  相似文献

The lipid class and the fatty acid compositions of microalgae highly influence bivalve larval and post-larval development. Light is an essential environmental factor for microalgal culture, and quantity and quality of light may induce changes in the biochemical composition of the algae. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of light spectrum (blue vs. white light) on lipid class and fatty acid compositions of Tisochrysis lutea cultured in a chemostat. Two different dilution rates (D) were assayed for each light spectrum: 0.2 and 0.7 day?1. Triacylglycerol (TAG), sterol, and hydrocarbon (HC) content increased sharply at low D. The proportion of alkenones was significantly reduced under blue light. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and particularly n-3 PUFA, content in phospholipids (PL) increased under blue light compared to white light at low D. Thus, blue light raised 22:6(n-3) levels in total lipids of T. lutea at low D. The cultivation of T. lutea in a chemostat at low D under blue light may improve nutritional value as feed for bivalve larvae by modifying the PUFA profile, especially increasing 22:6(n-3).  相似文献

The spectral sensitivity of the fish and the suitable light wavelength range for survival and growth performance of juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT) were investigated. The spectral sensitivity peak of PBT under photopic condition was observed between 449 and 503 nm, which corresponded to their natural habitat. The fish were reared in tanks irradiated continuously with 4 kinds of light emitting diodes (LEDs). The maximum wavelength of LEDs used for the rearing experiment were 460 nm (blue), 520 nm (green), 630 nm (red), and 450–680 nm (white). There was no notable difference in survival rate among fish in the four LED groups. However, the growth of juvenile PBT was lesser under red light compared to the green and white light wavelengths. These results suggest that PBT juveniles have low sensitivity to red light because the fish are rarely exposed to the red light wavelengths under natural ocean conditions. Thus, low sensitivity to red light negatively influenced the feeding behavior and growth of PBT juveniles.  相似文献

Dietary composition of the onychoteuthid squid Moroteuthis ingens at the Falkland Islands was related to predator size, as shown by stomach contents and fatty-acid analyses. Comparisons were made between two size classes of squid: those of mantle length <200 mm and those of mantle length >200 mm. Smaller squid had frequently consumed crustaceans and cephalopods; fish were of secondary importance. Larger squid consumed mostly fish and moderate amounts of cephalopods, but had rarely consumed crustaceans. These findings were supported by comparisons drawn between digestive-gland fatty-acid profiles and the fatty-acid profiles of potential prey species. Fatty-acid analyses indicated that the crustaceans Euphausia lucens, Munida gregaria and Themisto gaudichaudii were important prey items of smaller squid, whereas stomach content and fatty-acid analyses indicated that Gymnoscopelus nicholsi of around 100 mm standard length represented much of the fish prey of larger squid.  相似文献

The aim of the current study is to investigate the influence of light intensity, quality of light and alternative membrane sytems on the growth and headspace-GC/MS chemical analysis of Plectranthus amboinicus cultivated in vitro. Nodal segments were grown under light intensities (26, 51, 69, 94 and 130 µmol m?2 s?1) provided by cool-white fluorescent lamps. Apical segments were grown under light-emitting diodes blue; red; 1 blue/2.5 red; 2.5 blue/1 red; 1 blue/1 red and white fluorescent lamps. Apical and nodal segments were grown under alternative membrane and membrane-free systems. One, two or four PTFE membranes were used on the lid of the culture vessel. The membranes provided natural ventilation and worked as filters. The results have shown significant differences in the growth and carvacrol content, as well as in the content of carvacrol precursors (γ-terpinene and p-cymene) in different treatments. Among all tested light intensities, the significant increase in the dry weight and in the carvacrol content of plantlets derived from the nodal segments was recorded at 69 µmol m?2 s?1. The monochromatic red led to greater shoot length and higher dry weight in plantlets derived from the apical segments, as well as to carvacrol accumulation greater than that provided by the fluorescent lamps. The culture vessel enclosure by one and two membranes led to higher dry weight in plantlets derived from the apical and nodal segments, respectively. They also showed higher carvacrol content. Thus, it is possible optimizing the growth and carvacrol content in P. amboinicus cultivated in vitro by adjusting these environmental parameters.  相似文献

Syngnathus abaster is an euryhaline species, which has penetrated freshwaters in Europe and its range is expanding. The goal was to investigate the feeding patterns of this species in an invaded freshwater habitat, where it first appeared at the beginning of 1990s, with implications for assessing its possible effects on invaded ecosystems. In total, 36 prey items were identified in the diet of S. abaster. The most important prey were zooplanktonic organisms, among which copepods predominated significantly. The second most important prey were cladocerans, represented by 20 species/genera. The diet composition of this species showed clear seasonal dynamics but copepods remained the predominant prey item throughout the year. Significant positive relationships between the abundance of zooplanktonic organisms in the gut contents of S. abaster and their abundance in zooplankton samples were found for copepods and Ceriodaphnia sp. S. abaster showed a significant positive electivity for copepods throughout all months. It also positively selected some large cladocerans, which probably shared the same habitat. S. abaster also consumed fish items including gobiid larvae and its own juveniles, when they were abundant in May and especially in June. The possible effect of S. abaster on native ecosystems may include the shaping of zooplanktonic communities through selective predation on copepods. This species is unlikely to be a serious food competitor for native fish inhabiting European freshwaters, the majority of which are cyprinids. Nevertheless, it can have effects on some native fish through predation on their juveniles, which might share the same habitats.  相似文献

This study reports spore germination, early gametophyte development and change in the reproductive phase of Drynaria fortunei, a medicinal fern, in response to changes in pH and light spectra. Germination of D. fortunei spores occurred on a wide range of pH from 3.7 to 9.7. The highest germination (63.3%) occurred on ½ strength Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with 2% sucrose at pH 7.7 under white light condition. Among the different light spectra tested, red, far-red, blue, and white light resulted in 71.3, 42.3, 52.7, and 71.0% spore germination, respectively. There were no morphological differences among gametophytes grown under white and blue light. Elongated or filamentous but multiseriate gametophytes developed under red light, whereas under far-red light gametophytes grew as uniseriate filaments consisting of mostly elongated cells. Different light spectra influenced development of antheridia and archegonia in the gametophytes. Gametophytes gave rise to new gametophytes and developed antheridia and archegonia after they were transferred to culture flasks. After these gametophytes were transferred to plastic tray cells with potting mix of tree fern trunk fiber mix (TFTF mix) and peatmoss the highest number of sporophytes was found. This study aimed to investigate the influence of illumination with different light spectra on growth and stress response in pearl gourami Trichopodus leerii Bleeker, 1852. Fish (6.35 ± 0.43 cm, 5.69 ± 0.67 g) were reared in 8 glass aquaria each with 25 fish under one of four different lighting conditions: yellow (max 546 nm), red (max 605 nm), blue (max 470 nm) and white (control). Experiments lasted for 90 days. The stress response was evaluated by measuring cortisol levels. No significant effect was observed on final body weight, length and specific growth rate of fish. However, best values for these characteristics were achieved for fish reared under yellow light. A significant higher weight gain, condition factor was found in fish reared under yellow light compared with fish reared under blue or red light. In contrast, a lower final body weight, specific growth rate and weight gain were achieved for fish reared under red light. Feed conversion ratio was significantly lower in fish under yellow light compared with red or blue light. Stressed fish showed lower cortisol levels under yellow light compared with other light exposures. The study indicates that, pearl gourami grows better under yellow light and that yellow light lowers the stress-induced cortisol response.  相似文献

罗汉果试管苗在不同波长的LED(半导体)蓝(475±5nm)、黄(585±5nm)、红(660±5nm)及普通日光灯下培养,25d后观测发现,其外观的优劣依次为:蓝光>白光>红光>黄光;植株重量:蓝光>红光>黄光>白光;蓝光和白光下的植株叶大、色绿,植株矮壮,侧芽多;红光和黄光下的植株叶小、色黄绿,植株高、细、弯曲、节间长。测定罗汉果成熟叶片的吸收光谱,发现在波长380~500nm及660~680nm处有较强吸收。不同的光质下测定成熟叶片光合速率,大小依次为:红光>蓝光>白光>黄光。上述的各项试验表明,蓝光对罗汉果幼苗生长发育最好;红光和蓝光为成熟叶片光合作用的最佳光源。  相似文献

The predation potential of a generalist predator Rhynocoris marginatus (Fab.) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) against three important mealybug pests of cotton, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, Maconellicoccus hirsutus Green, and Coccidohystrix insolita Green (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) was evaluated under laboratory conditions. The specific objective of the study was to determine the prey capturing time, prey handling time, and prey preference among the three mealybug species for different developmental stages of R. marginatus. The number of prey consumed/predator/24 h by R. marginatus was dependent on the mealybug species and the predator developmental stage. Rhynocoris marginatus showed a decrease in prey capturing time and handling time as the predator grew older. After evaluating the prey stage preference, results indicated that the developmental stages of R. marginatus preferred adult mealybugs over the younger stages. In a choice-test bioassay including the three mealybug species, no significant difference in prey species selection was observed for the various R. marginatus developmental stages. However, the mortality of P. solenopsis was observed to be highest among the mealybugs, followed by M. hirsutus and C. insolita. This supports the idea that R. marginatus can be effectively utilized for the management of one of the most destructive mealybug pests of cotton, P. solenopsis. Results from this study are important for the development of a knowledge-based management program for cotton agroecosystems affected by various mealybug pests.  相似文献
