Changes in a grayling spawning population are described that occurred in relation to both natural and man-induced events. The spawning population was monitored from 1982 to 1987 with a trap on a fishway on the Beaverlodge River, Alberta. Most of the spawning run in each year was tagged with recaptures noted in subsequent years. Male grayling grew slightly faster than females. Growth rates were variable and appeared to be quite low in years of low water flow. Grayling first spawned at 2 to 6 years of age. The majority of tagged grayling would have returned to spawn a second time after a delay of one to two years were it not for the high adult mortality. It is hypothesized that the variable time to first maturity and the delay in the second spawning is a response to highly variable juvenile recruitment. Annual mortality rates increased with age, suggesting an increased vulnerability of larger fish to angling. The population appears highly sensitive to over-exploitation, because of the high mortality rates and the delayed time to spawning of the adults.Deceased.Deceased.  相似文献

Synopsis The migration of grayling was studied in Lake Mjøsa and 13 of its tributaries in which grayling spawn. The study demonstrate that grayling spawn in creeks in May/June and leave for Lake Mjøsa shortly after spawning to return the next spring. Once mature, the grayling spawn every year. Grayling mix in the lake and are found at a mean distance of 11.9 km from the estuary of their spawning creek in September. Grayling embryos hatch in June and the juveniles stay in the tributaries until September/October. Grayling spend the winter months in the lake. Out of 1599 grayling tagged in tributaries during the spawning season, 240 of 284 recaptures (84.5%) were made in subsequent spawning seasons in the same tributary in which they were first tagged. Forty-four grayling were recaptured in adjacent tributaries. These results demonstrate that, despite the fact that all grayling leave the tributaries and mix in the lake, there is a high precision of homing. It is suggested that the grayling population in lake Mjøsa is composed of stocks using specific tributaries for spawning.  相似文献

We show that European eels infected with the rhabdovirus EVEX (Eel Virus European X) virus, developed hemorrhage and anemia during simulated migration in large swim tunnels, and died after 1000-1500 km. In contrast, virus-negative animals swam 5500 km, the estimated distance to the spawning ground of the European eel in the Sargasso Sea. Virus-positive eels showed a decline in hematocrit, which was related to the swim distance. Virus-negative eels showed a slightly increased hematocrit. Observed changes in plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total protein and aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) are indicative of a serious viral infection. Based on these observations, we conclude that eel virus infections may adversely affect the spawning migration of eels, and could be a contributing factor to the worldwide decline of eel.  相似文献

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) and aspartate aminotransferase activities in cellular fractions of thyroid gland in rats after hypophysectomy and TSH treatment were investigated. MAO and aspartate aminotransferase activities in thyroid mitochondria were decreased after hypophysectomy and significantly increased after daily injection of TSH during five days to hypophysectomized rats. In microsomes after hypophysectomy a similar decrease of MAO activity was found but TSH was without effect on this activity. In conclusion: it is evident that MAO and aspartate aminotransferase in thyroid mitochondria the enzymes which could be a source for hydrogen peroxide to catalyze thyroid hormone synthesis are under the regulatory influence of TSH.  相似文献

The concentrations in plasma of total protein, urea-N, Ca, Mg, Na and K and the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) in plasma were studied in 20 sows from one week before weaning until four weeks after weaning. Ten of the sows resumed ovarian activity within 10 days after weaning, while in the other 10 sows the resumption of ovarian activity was delayed. Plasma glucose was studied in 10 sows from one week before weaning until two weeks after weaning, five of these sows had delayed resumption of ovarian function. After weaning the concentration of total protein and the ALAT activity increased, while plasma glucose and Mg decreased. Concerning ASAT, Ca, Na and K no changes were observed. A transient increase in urea-N level took place after weaning in sows with prolonged weaning-to-ovulation period. In sows with normal weaning-to-ovulation period no change in urea-N was observed. This was the only difference in blood chemistry observed between sows with normal weaning-to-ovulation period and sows with prolonged weaning-to-ovulation period.  相似文献

In the Fond du Lac River, adult male Arctic grayling defend territories on the spawning ground for up to 7 days. Females do not defend territories and do not exhibit agonistic behaviour during the breeding season.
The behaviour patterns exhibited by Arctic grayling during spawning are virtually identical to those exhibited by European grayling. The characteristic large dorsal fin of the grayling is of major importance during the spawning act.
Less than 50% of all spawning attempts proceed to completion. Interference by other fish or the improper orientation of one fish may result in one member of the spawning pair moving away. Most often however, incomplete acts are the result of the female moving away for no apparent reason. Females may initially 'test' males or may simply not be ready to spawn when approached by males. Homosexual spawning attempts were rarely observed.  相似文献

Few data are available on enzyme activity in amphibian plasma or erythrocytes. We measured the activity of several blood enzymes in the urodele amphibian Pleurodeles waltl reared under standard laboratory conditions. In subsequent experiments, we will estimate and compare the physiological and biochemical conditions of P. waltl when reared under extreme temperature or microgravity conditions. The enzymes selected were glutamate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, isocitrate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. In fresh plasma samples, enzyme activity in females was higher than in males, except for aspartate and alanine aminotransferases, which were equivalent in females and males. Glutamate dehydrogenase activity was higher in males than in females. In female erythrocytes, the activity of all enzymes was higher than in male erythrocytes. We have also studied the storage conditions of samples and observed that for most enzymes, the activity in freshly isolated plasma and erythrocyte preparations decreased after storage at -18 or +4 degrees C.  相似文献

Various proteases (proteinase K, subtilisin, trypsin and chymotrypsin) were used to study the selective inactivation of the aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1) isoenzymes of grey mullet (Mugil auratus Risso; Osteichthyes). The cytosolic isoenzyme was significantly inactivated by proteinase K, subtilisin and chymotrypsin, while the mitochondrial isoenzyme was sensitive only to proteinase K and to high doses of trypsin. Further identification of the aspartate aminotransferase isoenzymes was based on their discrete sensitivity toward chymotrypsin. Chymotrypsin (1 mg/ml) successfully inhibited purified cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase as well as cytosolic isoenzyme from plasma, whereas the mitochondrial form persisted unaffected. Similar results were obtained when examining liver and red muscle homogenates. This method revealed that the increased total activity of aspartate aminotransferase in fish plasma with induced acute liver injury, was partially a result of the mitochondrial isoenzyme leakage from damaged tissue.  相似文献

The streptozotocin diabetic rat was selected as a model to study how insulin deficiency alters vitamin B6 utilization by focusing on pyridoxal phosphate levels and aspartate aminotransferase activities in liver tissues. Diabetes of 15 weeks' duration lowered plasma pyridoxal phosphate levels by 84%. Normal plasma pyridoxal phosphate was 480 pmole/ml. Fractionation of liver into mitochondrial and extramitochondrial compartments demonstrated that diabetes caused a 43% diminution in mitochondrial pyridoxal phosphate per gram of liver. There was no cytoplasmic change in these diabetic rats. Mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase activity was decreased 53% per gram of diabetic liver and cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase activity was elevated 3.4-fold. Damage to diabetic mitochondria during preparation procedures could not account for the rise in cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase activity. Electrophoresis showed that in the diabetic cytoplasm both cathodal and anodal forms of the enzyme were elevated. Speculations concerning mitochondrial loss and cytoplasmic gain of enzyme activity as well as those on the reduction of plasma pyridoxal phosphate in the diabetic rat are presented.  相似文献

Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of chemically mediated liver injury. Since glycosaminoglycans possess antioxidant activity, the aim of this work was to assess the protective effects of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin-4-sulphate treatment in a model of carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury. Liver damage was induced in male rats by an intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride (1 ml/kg in vegetal oil). Serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, hepatic malondialdehyde, plasma TNF-alpha, hepatic reduced glutathione and catalase, and myeloperoxidase, an index of polymorphonuclear infiltration in the jeopardised hepatic tissue, were evaluated 24 h after carbon tetrachloride administration. Carbon tetrachloride produced a marked increase in serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities, primed lipid peroxidation, enhanced plasma TNF-alpha levels, induced a severe depletion of reduced glutathione and catalase, and promoted neutrophil accumulation. Intraperitoneal treatment of rats with hyaluronic acid (25 mg/kg) or chondroitin-4-sulphate (25 mg/kg) failed to exert any effect in the considered parameter, while the combination treatment with both glycosaminoglycans (12,5 + 12,5 mg/kg) decreased the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, inhibited lipid peroxidation by reducing hepatic malondialdehyde, reduced plasma TNF-alpha, restored the endogenous antioxidants, and finally decreased myeloperoxidase activity. These results suggest that hyaluronic acid and chondroitin-4-sulphate possess a different antioxidant mechanism and consequently the combined administration of both glycosaminoglycans exerts a synergistic effect with respect to the single treatment.  相似文献

The effect of pyridoxal depletion and supplementation on the intracellular level of mitochondrial and cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase in cultured chicken embryo fibroblasts was examined. No apoenzyme was detected in cells grown in the presence of pyridoxal, and the specific activity of total enzyme did not vary profoundly from primary to quaternary cultures. Under pyridoxal depletion, up to 40% apoenzyme was found in tertiary cultures which was entirely due to the mitochondrial isoenzyme. Cytosolic apoenzyme was never detected. Total aspartate aminotransferase relative to total protein was increased 2-fold in secondary cultures; only the mitochondrial isoenzyme contributed to the increased specific activity. The cytosolic isoenzyme decreased steadily and was below the limit of detection in quaternary cultures. The changes are attributed to an increased and decreased synthesis of mitochondrial and cytosolic isoenzyme, respectively. No induction of either isoenzyme was observed after incubating the cells with different hormones and substrates. In secondary cultures, no degradation of mitochondrial isoenzyme could be detected under pyridoxal deficiency or supplementation during 4.4 days, an interpassage duration. The cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase was degraded initially with an apparent half-life of approximately 0.9 day under both sets of conditions. The pronounced stability of mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase, even though one-third of it was present as apoenzyme, excludes the formation of the apoform to be the rate-limiting step in its degradation. The present results show that pyridoxal affects the synthesis of mitochondrial and cytosolic aspartate aminotransferase, but differently.  相似文献

1. In order to assess whether the potential ability of heart ventricular muscle and liver to metabolise substrates such as alanine, aspartate and lactate varies as the sheep matures and its nutrition changes, the activities of the following enzymes were determined in tissues of lambs obtained at varying intervals between 50 days after conception to 16 weeks after birth and in livers from adult pregnant ewes: lactate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.27), alanine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.2), pyruvate kinase (EC 2.7.1.40), pyruvate carboxylase (EC 6.4.1.1), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (GTP)(EC 4.1.1.32), malate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.37), aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1) and citrate (si)-synthase (EC 4.1.3.7). 2. In the heart a most marked increase in alanine aminotransferase activity was found throughout development. During this period the activities of citrate (si)-synthase, lactate dehydrogenase and pyruvate carboxylase also increased. There were no substantial changes in the activities of aspartate aminotransferase, malate dehydrogenase or pyruvate kinase. Pyruvate kinase activities were five times greater in the heart compared with those found in the liver. No significant activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (GTP) was detected in heart muscle. 3. In the liver the activities of both alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase increased immediately following birth although the activity of alanine aminotransferase was lower in livers of pregnant ewes than in any of the lambs. As with alanine aminotransferase the highest activities of lactate dehydrogenase were found during the period of postnatal growth. No marked changes were observed in malate dehydrogenase or citrate (si)-synthase activities during development. A small decline in pyruvate kinase activity occurred whilst the activities of pyruvate carboxylase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (GTP) tended to rise during development.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the properties of wild boar semen and their changes in annual cycle. During a 14-month study period, 167 ejaculates were sampled from 3 mature boars. In each ejaculate the volume of liquid fraction, percentage of spermatozoa motility, spermatozoa concentration and the total number of spermatozoa were determined. The activity of acid and alkaline phosphatase, and aspartate aminotransferase in the fresh semen plasma was also measured. It was shown that wild boar ejaculates did not differ from those of domestic boars, and the semen of the highest volume, concentration and number of spermatozoa was produced in late autumn. The spermatozoa motility was the lowest in summer. The activity of aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase in the semen plasma increased with shortening of the light period.  相似文献

1. Anadromous salmon transport marine‐derived nutrients and carbon to freshwater and riparian ecosystems upon their return to natal spawning systems. The ecological implications of these subsidies on the trophic ecology of resident fish remain poorly understood despite broad recognition of their potential importance. 2. We studied the within‐year changes in the ration size, composition and stable isotope signature of the diets of two resident salmonids (rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss; Arctic grayling, Thymallus arcticus) before and after the arrival of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) to their spawning grounds in the Bristol Bay region of southwest Alaska. 3. Ration size and energy intake increased by 480–620% for both species after salmon arrived. However, the cause of the increases differed between species such that rainbow trout switched to consuming salmon eggs, salmon flesh and blowflies that colonized salmon carcasses, whereas grayling primarily ate more benthic invertebrates that were presumably made available because of physical disturbances by spawning salmon. 4. We also observed an increase in the δ15N of rainbow trout diets post‐salmon, but not for grayling. This presumably led to the observed increase in the δ15N of rainbow trout with increasing body mass, but not for grayling. 5. Using a bioenergetics model, we predicted that salmon‐derived resources contributed a large majority of the energy necessary for growth in this resident fish community. Furthermore, the bioenergetics model also showed how seasonal changes in diet affected the stable isotope ratios of both species. These results expand upon a growing body of literature that highlights the different pathways whereby anadromous salmon influence coastal ecosystems, particularly resident fish.  相似文献

1. Butan-1-ol solubilizes that portion of rat liver mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1) that cannot be solubilized by ultrasonics and other treatments. 2. A difference in electrophoretic mobilities, chromatographic behaviour and solubility characteristics between the enzymes solubilized by ultrasonic treatment and by butan-1-ol was observed, suggesting the occurrence of two forms of this enzyme in rat liver mitochondria. 3. Half the aspartate aminotransferase activity of rat kidney homogenate was present in a high-speed supernatant fraction, the remainder being in the mitochondria. 4. A considerable increase in aspartate aminotransferase activity was observed when kidney mitochondrial suspensions were treated with ultrasonics or detergents. 5. All the activity after maximum activation was recoverable in the supernatant after centrifugation at 105000g for 1hr. 6. The electrophoretic mobility of the kidney mitochondrial enzyme was cathodic and that of the supernatant enzyme anodic. 7. Cortisone administration increased the activities of both mitochondrial and supernatant aspartate aminotransferases of liver, but only that of the supernatant enzyme of kidney.  相似文献

Untrained rats were subjected to a single intense physical effort. In the plasma the activity of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and the concentrations of amino acids: glycine, cystine, alanine and leucine with isoleucine were measured. The results were compared with the data obtained in a control group. Despite lack of statistically significant differences in the activity of aminotransferases and concentration of amino acids between these groups a correlation was found between the activity of AIAT and alanine concentration in the animals after exercise. The concentration of alpha-amino nitrogen was decreased statistically significantly in the group of animals subjected to intensive exercise.  相似文献

Activity of aspartate aminotransferase, an enzyme which catalyzes the interconversion of the excitatory transmitter candidates, glutamate and aspartate, has been measured in fiber tracts of rat, with an emphasis on sensory and motor systems of the brain. Most tracts had significantly higher activities than the cholinergic facial nerve root, consistent with the possibility that a component of aspartate aminotransferase activity might serve as a marker for neurons using glutamate and/or aspartate as neurotransmitter. Highest activity was in the auditory nerve root. On the other hand, a close correlation was found between aspartate aminotransferase and malate dehydrogenase activities in the fiber tracts, raising the question whether aspartate aminotransferase activity may be more closely related to energy metabolism than to transmitter metabolism.  相似文献

The plasma electrolytes, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl- and osmolarities had high values in capture-stressed big gamefish. Blood metabolites measured after stress showed glucose and lactate elevations. The activity of the plasma enzymes alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase suggested tissue disruptions following severe capture stress. Haematocrit values and methaemoglobin were high in capture-stressed gamefish. The plasma chemistry of resting and capture-stressed snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) was studied for comparison. Specific differences in plasma biochemistry appeared to be the result of different strategies of fish behaviour during capture.  相似文献
