1. The net-winged midges (Diptera: Blephariceridae) are a highly specialized group whose morphological characteristics and specific habitat requirements suggest a limited potential for dispersal. Levels of genetic variation were examined within streams, between streams in the same range and between mountain ranges in larval populations of Elporia barnardi in the south-western Cape of South Africa. The aim was to examine the hypothesis that population structure would reflect the poor potential for dispersal.
2. Significant deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in 17 of the 57 individual comparisons indicate a non-random mating population. Given the swarming behaviour and life history traits, larvae sampled may reflect the product of limited matings.
3. Analysis of population substructuring revealed significant levels of differentiation among geographically proximate populations. Large differences between streams within Table Mountain, similar in magnitude to those between mountain ranges, suggest that movement of individuals out of the stream catchment is rare. Observed FST values are more similar to those of fully aquatic species than other lotic insects with winged adult stages.

1. Larval net-winged midges (Diptera: Blephariceridae) possess six ventral suckers that enable them to inhabit swift streams. Each sucker consists of a suction disc and a cavity with a piston. Large muscles are inserted within the piston, as well as at the base of the suction disc. This structure infers that both attachment and release of the sucker is achieved by vertical movements of the piston.

SUMMARY 1. Monthly patterns of diatom ingestion by Blepharicera magna and B. similans (Diptera: Blephariceridae) larvae were examined to determine whether dietary attributes fluctuate within the final-instar stadium. The two species are isolated temporally: B. magna diets were examined from October to December, and B. similans diets were examined from June to August. Each month, the diatom assemblage of larval diets was assessed and compared with that of the forage base. In addition, total diatom ingestion was estimated.
2. Larval gut samples were ordinated on the basis of relative abundance of common diatom taxa, and month–month comparisons of larval diets were made, which revealed that (i) B. magna dietary assemblages did not vary significantly from October to December; (ii) diatom species composition of B. magna diets generally resembled that of the forage base; and (iii) B. similans dietary assemblages varied significantly from June to August, with few changes attributable to seasonality of ambient diatom flora.
3. Total diatom ingestion by B. magna was relatively stable from October to December. For B. similans , total diatom ingestion was greatest in July, when larvae were midstage of instar IV. ABSTRACTThe Caribbean blepharicerid fauna comprises three described species: Paltostoma palominoi Hogue and Garces, 1990, found in eastern Cuba; P. agyrocincta Curran, 1927, widespread in Puerto Rico; and P. schineri Williston, 1896, which occupies most major islands of the Lesser Antilles. In this paper, we describe P. portoricensis Hogue and Courtney, sp. n., a second species from Puerto Rico. We also provide keys to adults, pupae, and larvae of known Caribbean species, re-describe P. argyrocincta and P. schineri, and present a brief discussion of the bionomics and phylogenetic affinities of the net-winged midge fauna. 相似文献

- 1 The streams of French Polynesia contain several species of Neritidae and Thiaridae (Mollusca: Gastropoda). The neritids are dioecious and amphidromous with a freshwater adult stage and a poorly known, marine larval stage. The thiarids are parthenogenetic and viviparous, and rely on passive dispersal for colonisation of new habitats.
- 2 Populations of the neritid Clithon spinosus and the thiarids Melanoides tuberculata and Thiara granifera were analysed using mitochondrial DNA sequences from COI to compare the population structure of the snails at three different scales: between streams (N = 9), between islands (N = 4), and between age and distance of paired islands.
- 3 The amphidromous C. spinosus showed no evidence of genetic isolation at any of the scales tested (Fst values 0.02). Parsimony analyses resulted in two haplotype clusters separated by a three‐step segment, which were not linked to geographic isolation. The larval phase of C. spinosus is most likely a long‐lived planktotroph and a very effective disperser.
- 4 Two haplotypes of M. tuberculata, separated by 16 base pairs, were found. Both haplotypes were found in snails on all islands, and individuals representing both were often collected in the same habitat. One haplotype of T. granifera was found. M. tuberculata has the characteristics of the ‘general‐purpose genotype’ of clonal population structure and although it relies on passive dispersal, it has colonised nearly all freshwater habitats on the islands.

Genetic variation and population structure of the Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) in Hokkaido Island, based on mitochondrial D-loop sequences 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D -loop region sequences (602 bp) from 141 samples of the sika deer Cervus nippon collected from Hokkaido Island of Japan were investigated to elucidate population genetic structure. All animals possessed seven repeat units (38 or 39 bp each) in the sequences. Comparison of the 602-bp sequences showed four sites of transitional mutations (A↔G or C↔T). Based on combination of the substitutions, six D -loop haplotypes (a–f types) were identified in the Hokkaido population, suggesting the occurrence of at least six maternal lineages. Distribution maps of the haplotypes constructed using the Geographic Information System showed that the distribution patterns differed from haplotype to haplotype. In particular, distribution of the major three types (a-, b-, and c-types) almost overlapped with three main areas of coniferous forests in Hokkaido. These results suggest that expansion of the sika deer population could have occurred through the habitat of coniferous forests after the historical bottleneck in Hokkaido. 相似文献

Genetic differentiation among populations of Anopheles jeyporiensis was examined using 76 mtDNA COII sequences from 16 sites throughout southern China and northern Vietnam. The COII sequences are AT-rich (74.58%) and reveal high levels of diversity with 39 of 685 sites polymorphic and 50 different haplotypes present. Genetic variation is high within populations and significant geographical structure was detected at both population and regional levels. In the larger samples, the distributions of haplotypes suggest recent population expansion. 相似文献

【目的】探讨我国雷氏按蚊Anopheles lesteri的群体差异和分化程度。【方法】采用PCR方法, 从分子水平鉴别了采自我国和韩国的雷氏按蚊共9个群体139个样本, 扩增其线粒体DNA细胞色素氧化酶亚基Ⅰ基因, 并进行序列测定和分析。【结果】本研究共获得49个单倍型, 各单倍型呈高水平的平行演化, 来自云南群体的单倍型显示是扩张的源头。分子变异等级分析(AMOVA)的计算结果显示, 群体内变异占总变异的比例(64.95%)大于群体间(35.05%), FST值为0.3504, 各群体间出现遗传分化。Mantel检验结果显示基因流水平与地理距离呈负相关关系(R2=0.1322), 群体遗传结构符合距离隔离模型。【结论】雷氏按蚊韩国和辽宁群体与其他分布地群体间差异大, 已出现明显分化, 我国其他分布地群体间的遗传差异小。 相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Fourteen populations of Liponeura cinerascens minor from different sites in the Swiss Alps were investigated. Our goals were to describe the life history of this blepharicerid species and to analyse how it was influenced by temperature and food availability. 2. Temperature regimes and periphyton density at the sampling sites varied considerably. Mean annual temperature ranged from 3.8 to 6.5 °C, with annual amplitudes (i.e. the difference between the mean of the coldest and the warmest month) between 3.7 and 12.0 °C. Averaged periphyton density, which was assessed semiquantitatively on a scale from 0 to 5, ranged from 1.1 to 3.3. 3. Larvae or pupae of L. c. minor were found between January and October. Presence of larvae or pupae at individual sites ranged from 100 to 224 days and appeared to be mainly a result of hatching patterns. Individual larval development required between 7 and 20 weeks. Our findings suggest that L. c. minor is univoltine and undergoes an extended (≥4 months) egg dormancy during late summer, autumn and winter. 4. Development of L. c. minor was observed from <1 to 15.8 °C, indicating it is a cold‐stenotherm. Its geographical distribution seems to be constrained by high summer temperatures. Within the tolerated temperature range (0–16 °C), however, temperature had no apparent effect on hatching, larval growth rate or pupal size. 5. Larval growth rate and size of pupae were significantly correlated with food availability. Completion of larval development required 300–400 degree‐days at sites where periphyton was readily available, but >800 degree‐days where periphyton availability was low. 6. No evidence for intraspecific food competition was found, whereas food competition by other blepharicerid species, mainly Hapalothrix lugubris, appeared to be a major reason for the observed food limitation. However, as L. c. minor is much more widespread than H. lugubris, food competition between these two species is likely to occur infrequently. We therefore contend that variations in the life history of L. c. minor are mainly a consequence of its thermal constraints. 相似文献

We analysed 131 common impala (Aepyceros melampus melampus) samples from two provinces in South Africa (Limpopo and KwaZulu‐Natal) that are separated by the Drakensberg Mountain Range using sequences of the mitochondrial control region and seven polymorphic nuclear microsatellite loci. In line with earlier studies on bovid species, we found very high values of genetic diversity, particularly at the mtDNA locus with an overall nucleotide diversity of 3.6% and an overall haplotype diversity of 0.98. All statistical approaches confirmed a significant population differentiation between Limpopo and KwaZulu‐Natal, suggesting that areas of unsuitable habitat caused by the presence of the Drakensberg Range and the Indian Ocean coastal belt act as a barrier to gene flow. Only few individuals with signs of admixed origin were indicative of translocations or rare migration between the two provinces. Combination of our mtDNA data set with those of previous studies on impala from south‐western, southern and eastern Africa revealed the highest diversity in South Africa. This is in line with the hypothesis of a southern glacial refuge from which various African ungulate species spread northeast during the Holocene, although in the case of impala further analyses based on larger data sets will be necessary to definitively settle this question. 相似文献

Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is widely distributed from intermediate latitude to equatorial regions. Here, we examined its genetic structure and diversity based on a 627 bp region of the mitochondrial COI gene. We then estimated its demographic changes over the past 30 000 years. We observed 22 haplotypes in 339 individuals from 29 sites in Japan and Taiwan. The 22 haplotypes were integrated into two haplotype groups: one group exists at higher frequencies in lower latitudes (22–26°N), whereas the other group appears at higher frequencies in higher latitudes (30–37°N). The effective population size of the group that predominates in higher latitudes increased from 15 000 to 10 000 years before present. In contrast, the size of the lower-latitude group has remained constant for 30 000 years. These data suggest that C. sexmaculata might have expanded its distribution northwards and could be increasing its population size since the last glacial period. 相似文献

Oreochromis aureus was imported from Israel into South Africa in 1959 but data on its current status in South Africa are lacking. Genomic DNA was extracted and the COI gene amplified at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity. The identity of the sequences and specimens was determined using the Barcode of Life Data Systems and GenBank. Morphological and genetic assessment demonstrated that 11 specimens collected from two farm dams in the Eerste River System, Western Cape province, were Oreochromis aureus. A MaxEnt model compiled using global distribution, rainfall and temperature data predicted that large areas of southern Africa were climatically suitable for this species, indicating considerable invasion debt in southern Africa. As a result, surveys to assess for the extent of the invasion in South Africa and eradication of existing populations, if feasible, are recommended management actions. 相似文献

The genetic structure of a population provides critical insights into patterns of kinship and dispersal. Although genetic evidence of kin structure has been obtained for multiple species of social vertebrates, this aspect of population biology has received considerably less attention among solitary taxa in which spatial and social relationships are unlikely to be influenced by kin selection. Nevertheless, significant kin structure may occur in solitary species, particularly if ecological or life history traits limit individual vagility. To explore relationships between genetic structure, kinship, and dispersal in a solitary vertebrate, we compared patterns of genetic variation in two demographically distinct populations of the talar tuco-tuco (Ctenomys talarum), a solitary species of subterranean rodent from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Based on previous field studies of C. talarum at Mar de Cobo (MC) and Necochea (NC), we predicted that natal dispersal in these populations is male biased, with dispersal distances for males and females being greater at NC. Analyses of 12 microsatellite loci revealed that in both populations, kin structure was more apparent among females than among males. Between populations, kinship and genetic substructure were more pronounced at MC. Thus, our findings were consistent with predicted patterns of dispersal for these animals. Collectively, these results indicate that populations of this solitary species are characterized by significant kin structure, suggesting that, even in the absence of sociality and kin selection, the spatial distributions and movements of individuals may significantly impact patterns of genetic diversity among conspecifics. 相似文献

为了掌握云南省各地中华按蚊种群间的遗传变异和种群结构特征,测序并分析了采自云南9个样本点5个种群组的89头中华按蚊的线粒体COII基因。结果表明这些中华按蚊种群的COII基因序列平均单倍型多样性指数和核苷酸多样性指数分别为h=0.933,π=0.00406,共有51个变异位点,占分析的739个碱基总数的6.9%;定义了39个单倍型,有2个频率最高的单倍型H1和H9,分别占个体序列数的20.2%和12.4%;系统发育分析表明单倍型与地理位置没有明显的对应关系,单倍型网络图显示大部分单倍型分布没有明显的亲缘地理格局,主要以单倍型H1、H9、H4、H33和H2为中心呈星状分布,但元江和元阳构成的种群组(YU)单倍型存在明显地域分布特征;AMOVA结果表明种群组间遗传变异为12.58%,达到显著水平(P=0.04888),地理种群组间具有明显种群遗传结构。不同地区两两种群组间的Fst值和Nm值显示大部分种群组间存在基因交流,没有形成明显的遗传分化,但YU种群组和其他种群组间缺乏明显的基因交流,这主要是因为哀牢山的阻隔,使云南东西部形成两种不同的气候,产生了明显的遗传分化;歧点分布图显示为明显单峰分布,中性检测结果均为显著负值,说明云南省的中华按蚊种群在近期经历过复杂的种群扩张事件。掌握中华按蚊遗传多样性及分化特征,对中华按蚊及疟疾控制具有重要的作用。 相似文献

Phylogeographic structure was determined for the yellow mongoose, Cynictis penicillata , using mtDNA RFLPs and control region sequences. The RFLP analysis revealed 13 haplotypes which showed weak geographical patterning consistent with a recent range expansion from a refugial population(s). An analysis of molecular variance ( AMOVA ) revealed no correspondence between mtDNA phylogeography and subspecies delimitation, nor between matrilines and areas characterized by a high incidence of the viverrid-type rabies, of which the yellow mongoose is the principal vector. The lack of structure was also shown by control region sequences although four of the maternal lineages shared a near-perfect 81 bp repeat. We speculate that regional hot spots of the viverrid rabies biotype reflect population density differences in the yellow mongoose that are not underscored by genetic partitioning, at least at the level of resolution provided by our analyses. 相似文献

The morphological variation of adult Parochlus steinenii (Gerke) is described from measurements of two populations from the South Shetland Islands. Morphologically, the population from Ardley Island is significantly larger than the population from Livingston Island, and in both populations variation in forefemur length is generally greater than variation in either antennal or wing length. The final instar larva of P. steinenii is described in detail. A consideration of the species' distribution in three geographically isolated areas, as well as of the greater morphological variation in polar as opposed to temperate populations, indicates that a flexible life history strategy in the larval stage may be important for survival in extreme environments. 相似文献
