Leaf size and inflorescence size may be allometrically related traits   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Summary Corner's rules for plant form relate the degree of branching to branch diameter, and branch diameter to leaf or inflorescence size. We report the first interspecific test of these rules for inflorescence size and branch diameter. We derived a simple corollary of Corner's rules; since leaf size and inflorescence size are both correlated to branch thickness, they may be correlated to each other. This corollary holds for Leucadendron and Protea (Proteaceae), and in certain other taxa in the Asteraceae, Bruniaceae and Pinaceae which also have leaves and reproductive structures on the same shoot. For such taxa this implies that selection for aspects of floral display (inflorescence size, pollination type) may also be expressed at the level of leaf size and vice versa. This has implications for many aspects of botany and also points to the importance of the co-ordinating role of plant architecture for aspects of plant form.  相似文献

Populations exposed to different ecological environments should diverge for phenotypic traits that influence survival and reproduction. This adaptive divergence should reduce gene flow between populations because immigrants become less fit than residents and because hybrids perform poorly in either environment (i.e., ecologically-dependent reproductive isolation). Here I demonstrate adaptive divergence and the evolution of reproductive isolation in populations of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) introduced from a common ancestral source into a new lake system (Lake Washington, Washington). The introduced fish founded several new populations, two of which experience very different environments during breeding and early development (Cedar River v.s. Pleasure Point beach). Over 13 generations, the two populations diverged for adult traits (female body size, male body depth; measured in the wild) and embryo traits (survival to hatching, development rate, size at emergence; measured in a common environment). The rates of divergence for these characters were similar to those observed in other examples of rapid evolution, and can best be attributed to natural selection. Partial reproductive isolation has evolved in concert with adaptive divergence: the rate of exchange of adults between the populations (determined using natural tags) is higher than the rate of gene flow (determined using DNA microsatellites). The demonstration that adaptive divergence can initiate reproductive isolation in less than 13 generations suggests that the first signs of ecological speciation may appear soon after new environments are first colonized.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of mammalian type I interferon (IFN) genes showed: (1) that the three main subfamilies of these genes in mammals (IFN-, IFN-, and IFN-) diverged after the divergence of birds and mammals but before radiation of the eutherian orders and (2) that IFN- diverged first. Although apparent cases of interlocus recombination among mouse IFN- genes were identified, the hypothesis that coding regions of IFN- genes have been homogenized within species by interlocus recombination was not supported. Flanking regions as well as coding regions of IFN- were more similar within human and mouse than between these species; and reconstruction of the pattern of nucleotide substitution in IFN- coding regions of four mammalian species by the maximum parsimony method suggested that parallel substitutions have occurred far more frequently between species than within species. Therefore, it seems likely that IFN- genes have duplicated independently within different eutherian orders. In general, type I IFN genes are subject to purifying selection, which in the case of IFN- and IFN- is strongest in the putative receptor-binding domains. However, analysis of the pattern of nucleotide substitution among IFN- genes suggested that positive Darwinian selection may have acted in some cases to diversify members of this subfamily at the amino acid level.  相似文献

The effects of basal media, growth regulators and gelling agents on the morphogenetic response of eleven Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus and inodorus genotypes were examined. Regeneration was achieved from cultured cotyledons of all genotypes and the morphogenic response was affected by the genetic background. Trigeneric hybrids between the (Triticum aestivum ×Agropyron michnoi) F1 (CM, 2n=5x=35; ABDPP) and two winter rye (Secale cereale L., 2n=2x=14; RR) cultivars, Wugong 774 and AR-132, were synthesized. Such trigeneric hybrids could be used to transfer resistance genes for powdery mildew from rye to CM and subsequently to common wheat and to identify (1) the effects of the P genome ofAgropyron on the self-fertility of the hybrids and (2) the differences in genetic background between rye cultivars with marked differences in pollinating habit. The trigeneric hybrids varied widely in morphology and showed a high level of resistance to such diseases as barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), stripe rust, leaf rust, stem rust, and powdery mildew. Selfed and many backcross derivatives were obtained from the trigeneric hybrids. The results indicated that rye cvs Wugong 774 and AR132 arose from different gene pools and that the P genome ofAgropyron carries gene(s) responsible for chromosome segregation, leading to functional gamete formation and self-fertility of the hybrids. The F2 and BC1 plants could be obtained in two ways — fusion of the unreduced gametes and the assumed apomixis of unreduced female gametes in the trigeneric hybrid plant II-4 — which indicates that this trigeneric hybrid may be a special genetic stock. Chromosome pairing in the trigeneric hybrids and ways of producing wheat/rye and wheat/Agropyron translocations are discussed.  相似文献

The shoot apex development during the life cycle of Crocus sativus L. was characterized by light microscopy and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Using silver staining of polyacrylamide gels, numerous quantitative and qualitative changes in the populations of polypeptides were observed during transition from vegetative to prefloral and from prefloral to floral stages. Using 80 g protein, we were able to detect 352 polypeptidic spots. In comparison with the vegetative apex, 89 new polypeptides were identified in the prefloral meristem and 29 polypeptides were missing. In the reproductive meristem, 94 new spots were identified and 44 spots were missing. Thus, substantial quantitative and qualitative changes in the populations of polypeptides occurred during the prefloral stage, a point of no return in plant development, i.e., and before floral primordia initiation.  相似文献

The effect of the selective breeding of mice for high or low antibody production to complex immunogens is largely nonspecific, since it modifies the responsiveness of high (H) and low (L) lines to many antigens unrelated to the selection antigen. However, the nonspecific effect of the polygenic control operating in these lines is not a general feature. For example, the group of genes in selection IV, carried out for responsiveness to somatic antigen of Salmonella, does not modify the responses to sheep erythrocytes (SE). Despite equivalent responses in H and L mice of selection IV, a large variability was found in individual responses of F2 interline hybrids, which demonstrates the presence of alleles with high or low effect on responses to SE. A selective breeding (Selection IV-A) was therefore initiated from this F2 population for responsiveness to SE. A progressive interline divergence occurred during the first seven generations of selection; the interline separation was due to polygenic regulation (about four independent loci from a preliminary estimate).Equivalent responses to the s antigen of Salmonella are observed in the two lines. This constitutes additional evidence for distinct polygenic regulation of responses to SE and to somatic antigen. Summary The oval pore plates (approx. 17 m long) are separated from the antennal cuticle by a furrow, the inner wall of which is flexible. The thin perforated plates are strengthened by an encircling and a middle ledge, the latter of which branches into about 100 almost parallel rims. Each pore plate is innervated by about 20 sense cells. The dendrites fork into numerous branches occupying the outer receptor lymph cavity below the perforated plate. Each pore plate is associated with one thecogen cell, two trichogen cells, one tormogen cell and one envelope cell 4. A so-called additional cell surrounds the sensillum in the imaginal stage. The envelope cells in the later of the two pupal stages examined, have reached an arrangement which immediately precedes the secretion of the cuticulin layer. The surface of the duplicate trichogen cells is almost equal in area to the completed perforated plate. A dendritic sheath, entirely reduced in the imago, protrudes into the exuvial space, where it encloses a single dendrite.In the younger pupal stage the Sensillenanlage forms a crater, whereby envelope cell 4 overtops the other envelope cells. In insect-pollinated plants, floral characters are expected to play an important role in paternal and maternal reproductive success. Bateman's principle states that male reproductive success increases with more mating opportunities, while female reproductive success is limited by the amount of resources available to produce progeny, thus there should be greater selection on male floral characters than on female. In the case of the dioecious plant Silene latifolia, floral characters are likely to be influenced by its association within its native European range with moths of the genus Hadena, which serve as both pollinators and seed predators. The present study addresses relationships between male and female reproductive success, spatial location and floral characters (corolla, calyx and claw) over a 2-year period in two Spanish populations of S. latifolia in the presence of Hadena moths. A maximum likelihood paternity analysis using genetic variation at six allozyme markers showed heterogeneity in male reproductive success. There was much less variation in female reproductive success. When this analysis was extended to include interplant distance as a causal factor underlying variation in male success, we found that successful pollination tended to be limited to nearby females, in accordance with exponential decay of pollen dispersal with increasing distance. When the paternity analysis included floral characters as a causal factor underlying variation in male success, our data showed little evidence for directional selection, but there was stabilizing selection in one of the two years for calyx diameter. Selection on female characters varied widely between sites and years, in most of the site/year combinations there was little selection on female floral characters; however, in one site/year there was evidence for selection on all three floral characters. We conclude that pollinators visit flowers that are close together, and that while floral characters are important for the attraction of pollinators, larger flowers do not necessarily attract more pollinators at all sites and that variation among sites and years makes difficult any conclusions about the long-term importance of the predictions suggested by Bateman's principle.  相似文献

Environmental fluctuations can in theory allow the coexistence ofecologically similar species by time-sharing a niche, as envisioned by Hutchinson. The evolution of this situation is studied in a competition model, using as an example the evolution of seed germination strategies. Coexistence occurs via the evolution of low-risk and high-risk strategies for dealing with the variability by different species. Coexistence is promoted by intermediate levels of variability or disturbance, and by a trade-off between seed yield and seed survivorship. These results may be applicable also to other low vs. high risk life history options in unpredictably varying environments, such as: stress resistance vs. potentially rapid growth, high adult survivorship vs. high reproductive output. The model's predictions differ from those obtained without consideration of life history evolution in response to environmental variability, and are consistent with some recent studies of plant strategies in intermittently stressed communities.I thank A. Cat gene expression has been investigated following PEG-mediated plasmid uptake into barley protoplasts. The uptake conditions optimised for transient expression were employed for stable transformation. Transformed protoplast-derived calli of the cvs. Dissa and Igri, were selected on medium containing G418 at 40 g ml–1 or kanamycin sulphate at 250 g ml–1. Absolute transformation frequencies of 28.9×10–5 and 21.3×10–5 were recorded for Dissa with kanamycin sulphate and G418 selection, respectively. The frequency for Igri was 11.5×10–5 with G418 selection. Evidence is presented for complexation of guanosine 5-monophosphate 2-methylimidazolide (2-MeImpG) with polycytidylate (poly(C)) at pH 8.0 and 23°C in the presence of 1.0 M NaCl and 0.2 M MgCl2 in water. The association of 2-McImpG with poly(C) was investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy as well as by monitoring the kinetics of the nucleophilic substitution reaction of the imidazole moiety by amines. The results of both methods are consistent with moderately strong poly(C) · 2-McImpG complexation and the spectrophotometric measurements allowed the construction of a binding isotherm with a concentration of 2-McImpG equal to 5.55 ± 0.15 mM at half occupancy. UV spectroscopy was employed to establish the binding of other guanosine derivatives on poly(C). These derivatives are guanosine 5-monophosphate (5GMP), guanosine 5monophosphate imidazolide (ImpG), and guanosine 5monophosphate morpholidate (morpG). Within experimental error these guanosine derivatives exhibit the same affinity for poly(C) as 2-McImpG.  相似文献

The variation in two sets of morphological characters of the flowers of the highly inbreedingScleranthus annuus (Caryophyllaceae) was assessed using 15–20 plants from each of 20 natural populations from the southernmost region of Sweden. The stamen fertility data set consisted of 10 characters describing the degree of fertility of the ten stamens/staminoids, while the sepal/gynoecium data set comprised 10 sepal characters, together with style and stigma length. Substantial variation was found in both the degree of development and the fertility of the stamens, the degree of variability in stamen fertility being related to stamen position within the flower. Considerable variation was found in the characters of the sepal and the gynoecium. Hierarchical analyses of variance indicated that 29% of the variation in total male reproductive effort was distributed among populations, 28% among plants within populations and 43% represented within-plant variation. The corresponding averages for the characters from the sepal/gynoecium data set are 26, 38, and 35%: a greater proportion of the total variance in female reproductive characters is accounted for by among individual variation than is the case with the male reproductive characters. Significance tests of Mahalanobis distances derived by canonical variate analyses indicated that all populations were significantly separated using the sepal/gynoecium data set, while only 50% of the pairwise comparisons on the basis of the stamen fertility data set were significant. Cluster analysis did not reveal any aggregation of the populations. The incongruence of the two data sets and their ability to discriminate between the populations is discussed.  相似文献

Variations at three flight-related enzyme loci, -glycerophosphate dehydrogenase (-Gpdh), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6pd), and phosphoglucomutase (Pgm), ofEpiphyas postvittana (Walker) moths were investigated using starch gel electrophoresis. Among the three enzyme loci, -Gpdh andG6pd were found to be monomorphic, butPgm was polymorphic, with a total of seven different genotypes and five alleles identified in this study. Comparisons of allozyme variability at thePgm locus showed significant differentiation among five natural populations sampled from geographically distinct localities in New Zealand and Australia and between laboratory populations differentiated by artificial selection on flight capacity. ThePgm polymorphism was shown to be associated with the variation of flight capacity, but the role of the enzyme locus in the evolution of flight behavior is to be demonstrated in this species.This work was supported by the research scholarship of the University of New England.  相似文献

The genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships of Gasterosteus aculeatus around Japan were investigated for 15 populations of the Japan Sea and Pacific Ocean forms previously detected by allozyme analyses. PCR-RFLP analysis of mtDNA ND5/6 gene indicated two major divergent clades: (1) Alaskan population and (2) Russian and Japanese populations. Japanese populations were clearly subdivided into G. aculeatus populations and hariyo (G. aculeatus leiurus). However, the relationships among Japanese G. aculeatus populations did not support the genetic divergence between Japan Sea and Pacific Ocean forms shown by allozyme analyses. This suggests that mtDNA genetype similarity between the two forms could have resulted from complete replacement of mtDNA from one form to the other. MtDNA introgression is possible in two direction: from Japan Sea form to Pacific Ocean form and the reverse. The haplotype composition of each population observed in the present study suggests that the second direction is more likely. The migrant number of females per generation (Nm) between populations of the two forms was remarkablely large (9.083–infinite), suggesting that gene flow is taking place between the populations at the present time or might have occurred until recent years.  相似文献

Summary In isolated condition, the sperm cells ofSpinacia oleracea are no longer arranged in pairs as in the pollen grain. The vegetative membrane, which surrounds a sperm cell pair in a mature pollen grain, is lost during the isolation procedure. The sperm cells become spherical in shape.The isolated sperm cell is surrounded by an intact plasma membrane. The heterochromatic or euchromatic sperm cell nucleus is located in the cell center. Mitochondria are round to oval and have distinct cristae. Often they are clustered in groups of 5 to 10 mitochondria. Dictyosomes are present in the cytoplasm and consist of 4 to 5 cisterns. Endoplasmatic reticulum is mostly situated at the sperm cell periphery, as single cisterns very near the plasma membrane.From diameters of sectioned sperm cells in electron micrographs, it is possible to calculate the average diameter of the whole sperm cell. This average diameter is 3.66 m with a variation of 3.0 m to 4.2 m, resulting in an average volume of 25.6 m3. The nuclear volume is 12.8 m3 (50.0% of the whole cell) and the mitochondrial volume is 0.7 m3 (2.5% of the whole cell). The frequency distribution of the isolated sperm cells diameters shows only one peak with a normal distribution, indicating that there is no dimorphism in volume.  相似文献

Summary When testing census data of insect populations for regulation, and/or for overall density dependence in the course of numbers over years, certain conditions, which follow from the testing models, should be fulfilled. Even if the series of densities may be considered a piece of first-order Markov chain (a necessary condition) significant test results need not obviously point to regulation of numbers by dominant density-dependent processes. Such a case is presented by the pine looper population at Hoge Veluwe studied by Klomp. A drastic drop in density from 1952 to 1953, which takes 78–97% of the log-density range (LR) over all years, most probably wrongly causes significant test results. This is supported by some simulation experiments. Moreover, we cannot be sure that the population was sufficiently isolated, i.e. that dispersal of adults from surrounding populations did not importantly influence population numbers. Among 6 Panolis-populations studied by Schwerdtfeger during 17 years a single one scored significantly with all tests. This resulted, however, from such a drastic drop in density that it covered the entire log-density range (LR=9.39), which therefore is wider than in any of the other (non-significant) populations. Another Panolis-population that maintained itself during 60 years, and which also scored significantly, most probably was kept within limits by supplementation of very low densities with immigrants, on the one hand, and by restriction of high densities by defoliation caused by other species, on the other. It is discussed whether this can be considered regulation, or results from spreading of risk. It is concluded that the range stability of particular populations must be considered generally to be the result of stabilization by both internal and external processes among which both density-dependent and density-independent processes play a significant part, and from which the contribution of the density-dependent processes need not be separated. The expression of neutral glycosphingolipids (GSLs) and gangliosides was investigated in cryosections of normal mouse skeletal muscle and in muscle of mice with neuromuscular diseases using indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. Transversal and longitudinal sections were immunostained with specific polyclonal antibodies against lactosylceramide, lacto-N-neotetraosylceramide, globoside, GM3(Neu5Ac), GM3(Neu5Gc) and GM1(Neu5Ac) as well as monoclonal anti-Forssman GSL antibody. In normal CBA/J mouse muscle (control) the main immunohistochemically detected ganglioside was GM3(Neu5Ac) followed by moderately expressed GM3(Neu5Gc) and GM1. The neutral GSLs lactosylceramide and globoside were stained with almost identical, high fluorescence intensity. Low amounts of lacto-N-neotetraosylceramide and trace quantities of Forssman GSL were immunostained. All GSLs were detected in the sarcolemma, but also in considerable amounts at the intracellular level. Mice with neuromuscular diseases were the A2G-adr mouse mutant (a model for human recessive myotonia of Becker type), the BL6-wr mutant (a model for motor neuron disease) and the BL10-mdx mouse mutant (a model for human Duchenne muscular dystrophy). No changes in GSL expression were found in the A2G-adr mouse, while muscle of the BL6-wr mouse showed increased intensity of immunofluorescence in stainings with anti-lactosylceramide and anti-GM3(Neu5Ac) antibodies. Muscle of BL10-mdx mice showed the most prominent changes in GSL expression with reduced fluorescence intensity for all antibodies. Major differences were not observed in the intensities of GSLs, but there were significant differences in the patterns of distribution on plasma membrane and at the subcellular level. The exact nature and pathogenesis of these changes should be elucidated since such investigations could furnish advances in understanding the functional role of neutral GSLs and gangliosides in normal as well as in diseased muscle. Summary Changes in the density of nuclear chromatin in the shoot apical meristem ofSinapis alba L. during floral transition (floral evocation) are described using Feulgen-stained 2 m thick semi-thin sections and scanning cytophotometric techniques. In both G1 and G2 nuclei the chromatin becomes less heterogeneous and less dense in evoked meristems compared to vegetative meristems. When chromatin is resolved into two fractions the dispersed fraction increases relative to the condensed fraction at evocation. This decondensation process occurs earlier in G1 than in G 2 nuclei. These chromatin changes are presumably closely related to the dramatic stimulation of biosynthetic activity and cell division during floral transition.  相似文献

Summary DNA sequences of the human, mouse, and rabbit immunoglobulin kappa-gene (J-C regions) are compared with respect to various DNA patterns, including dyad symmetry pairings, runs of nucleotides, repeat clusters, and repeats that occur with unusually high frequency. The significant dyad symmetry pairings within each of the sequences emphasize the two control-enhancer elements of the J5-C intron. Dyad symmetry pairs between the J-C region and a number of kappa variable (V)-gene domains suggest differences in the affinities between the V and J segments. It is the consensus heptamer rather than the consensus nonamer that embodies the longest V-J dyad symmetry combinations. In the rabbit there are long runs and repeat clusters of the sequences that identify regions of high duplication; these regions are absent in the human and mouse sequences. High-frequency oligonucleotides feature the consensus nonamer 5 to the J segments, especially in the mouse sequence.  相似文献
