Selective extraction and morphological evidence indicate that the phycobiliproteins in three Cryptophyceaen algae (Chroomonas, Rhodomonas, and Cryptomonas) are contained within intrathylakoidal spaces and are not on the stromal side of the lamellae as in the red and blue-green algae. Furthermore, no discrete phycobilisome-type aggregates have thus far been observed in the Cryptophyceae. Structurally, although not necessarily functionally, this is a radical difference. The width of the intrathylakoidal spaces can vary but is generally about 200–300 A. While the thylakoid membranes are usually closely aligned, grana-type fusions do not occur. In Chroomonas these membranes evidence an extensive periodic display with a spacing on the order of 140–160 A. This periodicity is restricted to the membranes and has not been observed in the electron-opaque intrathylakoidal matrix.  相似文献

The recently published complete DNA sequence of the bacterium Thermotoga maritima provides evidence, based on protein sequence conservation, for lateral gene transfer between Archaea and Bacteria. We introduce a new method of periodicity analysis of DNA sequences, based on structural parameters, which brings independent evidence for the lateral gene transfer in the genome of T.maritima. The structural analysis relates the Archaea-like DNA sequences to the genome of Pyrococcus horikoshii. Analysis of 24 complete genomic DNA sequences shows different periodicity patterns for organisms of different origin. The typical genomic periodicity for Bacteria is 11 bp whilst it is 10 bp for Archaea. Eukaryotes have more complex spectra but the dominant period in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is 10.2 bp. These periodicities are most likely reflective of differences in chromatin structure.  相似文献

Several parameters of meiosis have been studied in cultured anthers of Trillium erectum. The accessibility of labeled substrates to meiotic cells and the fate of these substrates in relation to meiotic stage have been determined. Evidence has been adduced for the synthesis of RNA and protein during the meiotic cycle well after chromosome duplication. The effect of interfering with systems directly or indirectly connected with protein formation has been studied by means of chloramphenicol, 8-azaguanine, 5-methyltryptophan, and ethionine. Administration of these reagents at different intervals in the cycle elicits correspondingly different responses thereby indicating a periodicity in the activities of different systems. The following processes have been shown to be affected in these experiments: chromosome segregation, chromosome morphology, cytokinesis, wall synthesis, and enzyme appearance. The possibility of experimentally altering the normal sequence of events has also been shown.  相似文献

The axostyle of the flagellate Saccinobaculus is a motile ribbon composed of microtubules, cross-bridged to form interconnected rows. We find a centriole-related row of dark-staining tubules near the nucleus at the anterior end of the axostyle. Other tubule rows bind parallel to this primary row, acquire ordered relationships, and become the tubules of the axostyle proper. The number of tubule rows is constant in Saccinobaculus lata from the region near the nucleus to within a few micrometers of the posterior tip of the cell. In Saccinobaculus ambloaxostylus a few tubule rows are added to the axostyle posterior to the nucleus, giving this axostyle a leaf spring construction. The tubules of S. lata are held in rows by links with a 140 Å periodicity along the tubule axis; bridges between rows of tubules are also seen but are not apparently periodic. Each tubule in S. ambloaxostylus shows an axial periodicity of 150 Å due to pairs of arms, one of which is always part of the intrarow link. Interrow bridges in this species run either from tubule to tubule or from tubule to the free arm, but as in S. lata they do not display an obvious axial periodicity. An average unit cell is presented for the axostyle of each species, and the relation of the intertubule links to the microtubule substructure is discussed.  相似文献

Microfilarial periodicity of Dirofilaria immitis (the dog heartworm) was determined at two hr intervals for 72 consecutive hrs in 10 naturally infected war dogs, 3-9 years old, in Korea to facilitate harvest of the microfilariae for possible use in laboratory works and to elucidate further the periodicity of the microfilaria depending on geographic location. Although the periodicity had been observed as being low-grade nocturnal, maximal microfilarial counts were found at 21:00 hr and minimal at 11:00 hr, giving rise to an evident peak in fluctuation of the larval counts. This is the first record of the periodicity of the microfilariae identified as D. immitis in Korea.  相似文献

Lunar periodicity has been thought to influence the onset of the spawning migration of anguillid eels. In this study, we measured daily locomotor activity of 8 silver-phase Japanese eels Anguilla japonica in outdoor tanks to examine the effect of lunar periodicity on their activity and the following seaward migration. The activity of silver eels was highest around the new moon during the early part of the experiment, which is the ordinary season of seaward migration in Japan. The observed patterns of activity may reflect the importance of the lunar cycle for the onset of the spawning migration in anguillid eels.  相似文献

Many studies of biological sequence data have examined sequence structure in terms of periodicity, and various methods for measuring periodicity have been suggested for this purpose. This paper compares two such methods, autocorrelation and the Fourier transform, using synthetic periodic sequences, and explains the differences in periodicity estimates produced by each. A hybrid autocorrelation—integer period discrete Fourier transform is proposed that combines the advantages of both techniques. Collectively, this representation and a recently proposed variant on the discrete Fourier transform offer alternatives to the widely used autocorrelation for the periodicity characterization of sequence data. Finally, these methods are compared for various tetramers of interest in C. elegans chromosome I.  相似文献

The effect of high-frequency x-ray irradiation in prolongation of the larval stage of Drosophila melanogaster has been studied further, and evidence presented of the attainment of a maximum effect followed by a decrease to an almost level plateau in the course curve of average (median) prepupal period (φ) as a function of the period of irradiation (t) under otherwise fixed conditions. The variation of effects of the experimental treatment with age of the larvae at the time of irradiation has been demonstrated in both control and irradiated lots, and a strikingly decreased effect observed when ventilation was not supplied as usual. Means of employment of a living system of this type as an indicator of effectiveness of radiation as in phantom depth or other distributional experiments have been presented and their use illustrated.  相似文献

Four new circadian clock mutants of Neurospora crassa have been isolated that alter the period length of the circadian conidiation rhythm. Three of these are at the frq locus on linkage group VIIR, where four other clock mutants are located. In contrast to wild type, which has a period length of 21.6 hr, frq-6 has a period length of 19 hr, while frq-7 and frq-8 have period lengths of 29 hr and represent the largest effects of any single gene mutants on circadian periodicity. Thus, seven mutants have now been isolated that map to the frq locus, with period lengths ranging from 16.5 to 29 hr, and each mutant alters clock periodicity by an integral multiple of 2.5 hr. In addition, all frq mutants show incomplete dominance in heterokaryons. The large percentage of clock mutants that map to this locus, coupled with their unique properties, suggests that the frq locus plays an important role in clock organization.—The fourth mutant, designated chrono (chr), has a period length of 23.5 hr, shows incomplete dominance and is unlinked to either of the previously identified clock loci, frq or prd (formerly called frq-5). Double mutants between various combinations of clock mutants show additive effects and indicate no significant gene interaction among mutants at these three loci.  相似文献

Through the history of ecology, fluctuations of populations have been a dominating topic, and endogenous causes of fluctuations and oscillations have been recognized and studied for more than 80 years. Here we analyzed an historical dataset, covering more than 130 years, of European lobster (Homarus gammarus) catches. The data shows periodic fluctuations, which are first dampened and then disappear over time. The disappearance of the periodicity coincided with a substantial increase in fishing effort and the oscillations have not reappeared in the time series. The shifting baseline syndrome has changed our perception of not only the status of the stock, but also the regulating pressures. We describe the transition of a naturally regulated lobster population into a heavily exploited fisheries controlled stock. This is shown by the incorporation of environmental and endogenous processes in generalized additive models, autocorrelation functions and periodicity analyses of time-series.  相似文献

PRECIPITATION of collagen from solution in the presence of chondroitin sulphates (or certain other glycosaminoglycans), followed by dialysis against water, leads to the formation of the fibrous long spacing (FLS) polymorphic form of collagen. Electron microscopy shows this to consist of banded fibrils with a periodicity in the range 1200–2400 Å and a symmetric intraperiod structure, in contrast to the 600–700 Å periodicity and polarized fine structure characteristic of native collagen fibrils. FLS was originally reported by Highberger et al.1–3 and has been observed in three principal modifications, FLS I, FLS II and FLS III, differing in periodicity and arrangement of dense bands4–6. An extended conformation of sodium and calcium hyaluronate with helical parameters n (number of residues per turn) = 3 and h (axial rise per disaccharide) = 0.95 ± 0.01 nm has been found to pack in a number of two-dimensional arrays. Each of the structures exhibits a variant of a motif consisting of six chains surrounding a “vacant” site. The distribution of chains around this site, together with certain aspects of the periodicity, suggests that there might be a special relationship between this conformation of hyaluronic acid and water.  相似文献

Low concentrations of ethyl alcohol stimulate the respiration of mammalian erythrocytes in vitro. Low concentrations of ethyl urethan remain without effect on, or tend slightly towards depressing the respiration of mammalian erythrocytes in vitro. It is suggested that this may be due to the oxidizable nature of alcohol, and the non-oxidizable nature of urethan, properties which come into evidence only when these narcotics are present in such low concentrations that the threshold of inhibition (narcosis) has not been reached.  相似文献

The CAM has been tested in six species of the Aeonium genus by studying the diurnal fluctuation of organic acids, pH and night fixation of CO2. The existence of a mesophyll structure able to support this metabolism has been shown as well as a congruent periodicity in the pool of cell starch. We have calculated the S, ES and Sm indices in the six species. A series of regression equations of different grades and types were calculated and shown to have correlation coefficients statistically significant. This allows us to confirm the suitability of the Sm index as a rapid test to establish the CAM as postulated by former authors.  相似文献

A hemagglutination-inhibitory mucoprotein from human urine has been studied with the electron microscope. It consists of filaments, with diameters of 40 to > 240 A, composed of smaller fibrils. In the two-dimensional projection of the electron micrographs, the single fibrils often show a zig-zag course with a periodicity of 100 to 140 A; the single branch of a zig-zag measures about 60 A in length and either 20 or 40 A in width. Still thinner fibrillar elements are observable with diameters of 10 A or less. In three-dimensional aspect, the zig-zag structure might be a helix. The fibril-bundle (or filament) reveals a complicated configuration. Heat treatment at 70°C shows some indication of denaturation (e.g. filaments are shorter), whereas at 80°C almost complete degradation of the protein into individual zig-zag elements or smaller pieces is attained. The interaction between influenza virus particles and inhibitory mucoprotein consists of the attachment of a fiber molecule to the virus projections at several sites and frequently on more than one virus particle.  相似文献

Exonuclease III has previously been shown to pause about every 10 nucleotides along the 3' strands while it invades the nucleosome core. Here, the exact periodicity of this digestion, i.e., the spacing of the pauses, was determined. Results showed that the exonuclease digests the first 20 nucleotides at the edge of the nucleosome core with a periodicity of approximately 11 nucleotides; in contrast, DNA closer to the center of the particle is digested with a smaller periodicity of about 10 nucleotides. These figures differ from the known periodicity of DNase I digestion, approximately 10 and 10.5 nucleotides at the edge and in the center of the nucleosome, respectively. Moreover, as shown by sedimentations in sucrose gradients, the structure of the nucleosome does not appear to be significantly altered by the gradual destruction of its DNA moiety by the exonuclease. Such stability of the nucleosome, along with other complementary observations, indicates that the transition in the digestion periodicity of the exonuclease may not be the consequence of a structural rearrangement of the particle upon trimming. This transition may rather be ascribed to the properties of the native nucleosome and to the intrinsic mechanism of action of the enzyme. Finally, evidence is presented which suggests that the exonuclease 10-nucleotide periodicity of digestion of the inner region of the nucleosome reflects a 10 base pair/turn pitch of the DNA in that region.  相似文献

The mechanisms underlying polyandry and female mate choice in certain taxonomic groups remain widely debated. In elasmobranchs, several species have shown varying rates of polyandry based on genetic studies of multiple paternity (MP). We investigated MP in the finetooth shark, Carcharhinus isodon, in order to directly test the encounter rate hypothesis (ERH), which predicts that MP is a result of the frequency of encounters between mature conspecifics during the breeding season, and should therefore increase when more time is available for copulation and sperm storage. Female finetooth sharks in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) have been found to reproduce with both annual periodicity and biennial periodicity, while finetooth sharks from the northwestern Atlantic Ocean have only been found to reproduce biennially, allowing us to compare mating opportunity to frequency of MP. Our results show high rates of MP with no significant difference in frequency between females in the GoM (83.0%) and Atlantic (88.2%, p = .8718) and varying but nonsignificant rates of MP between females in the GoM reproducing annually (93.0%) and biennially (76.6%, p = .2760). While the ERH is not supported by this study, it remains possible that reproductive periodicity and other physiological factors play a role in determining rates of MP in elasmobranchs, with potential benefits to individuals and populations.  相似文献

An earlier reported method for revealing latent periodicity of the nucleotide sequences has been considerably modified in a case of small samples, by applying a Monte Carlo method. This improved method has been used to search for the latent periodicity of some nucleotide sequences of the EMBL data bank. The existence of the nucleotide sequences' latent periodicity has been shown for some genes. The results obtained have implied that periodicity of gene structure is projected onto the periodicity of primary amino acid sequences and, further, onto spatial protein conformation. Even though the periodic structure of gene sequences has been eroded, it is still retained in primary and/or spatial structures of corresponding proteins. Furthermore, in a few cases the study of genes' periodicity has suggested their possible evolutionary origin by multifold duplications of some gene's fragments.  相似文献

To obtain a reliable climate reconstruction from coral skeletons it is first necessary to understand the way these grow and incorporate information. Thickness of skeletal elements (exothecal and endothecal dissepiments, costae, septa, and theca-wall) as well as the spacing between exothecal and endothecal dissepiments of the four extant Atlantic species of Montastraea (M. annularis, M. faveolata, M. franksi and M. cavernosa) were measured through high and low density bands. Our results show that growth periodicity, controlled by the effect of temperature, is expressed in changes in thickness of costae and exothecal dissepiments in the four studied Montastraea species, with no changes in endothecal elements and theca-wall thickness which, in turn, has implications for research on inclusive records using these species. Spacing between both exothecal and endothecal dissepiments resulted without changes along the high and low density bands, and we found evidence that there is a rhythmical formation of these structures linked somehow to lunar cycles.  相似文献
