We quantified the predation of Acanthocyclops americanus from the shallow Mediterranean lake Albufera, using gut contents from field collections and laboratory feeding tests. For functional response studies, we used Brachionus plicatilis (at 6 concentrations, 400–4000 ind. 40 ml−1) and Diaphanosoma mongolianum (at 2–20 ind. 40 ml−1). Copepod feeding rates were also estimated using different proportions of rotifer prey and lake seston (0–67.5% of seston + 40 individuals of B. plicatilis). Prey selection studies were conducted using five zooplankton species: Brachionus angularis, Brachionus plicatilis, Keratella tropica, Daphnia magna and Diaphanosoma mongolianum. Gut contents of field-collected adult Acanthocyclops contained filamentous algae and cyanobacteria and 16 zooplankton species (Keratella cochlearis, unspined and spined forms, K. tropica, Brachionus plicatilis, Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus angularis, Brachionus variabilis, Asplanchna girodi, Polyarthra vulgaris, Synchaeta pectinata, Lepadella rhomboides, unidentified bdelloids, Alona rectangula, Chydorus sphaericus, Bosmina longirostris, D. magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia and copepod nauplii). When fed B. plicatilis or D. mongolianum, female A. americanus had higher prey consumption rates than males. Increased proportion of lake seston caused reduced consumption of brachionid prey. Our data suggest that A. americanus is omnivorous in nature.

17 species of rotifers have been recorded from Lake Surinsar, Jammu (J & K), India of which some are either exclusively limnetic (Brachionus angularis, Hexarthra sp., Filinia opliensis), or littoral (Brachionus patulus, M. ventralis, Trichotoria sp., Platyias quadricornis, Lecane (Monostyla) decipiens, L (M), bulla and Lecane sp.) and others (Keratella tropica, Anuraeopsis fissa, Brachionus quadridentatus, B. calyciflorus, Trichocera sp., T. similis, and Polyarthra sp.) seem to be wandering species. Seasonal maxima for both littoral and limnetic zones are reported. Most population maxima are contributed mainly by one or at best two species.Physico-chemical factors like temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, calcium, magnesium, and total alkalinity have been studied and their infuence on these rotifer species are discussed. On their thermal responses, the available rotifer species have been classified as warm stenothermal, cold stenothermal or eurythermal. The importance of Mytilina ventralis as a biological indicator for dissolved oxygen in this lake has been pointed out.  相似文献

The Albufera of Valencia is a large oligohaline hypertrophic lagoon, regulated by sluice gates according to the needs of the surrounding rice field cultivation. It is in a turbid state with permanent cyanobacterial blooms. A slight improvement was detected after diversion in the 1990s of part of the sewage flowing into it. After sewage diversion, we found that: (1) Chlorophyll concentration and rotifer densities decreased; (2) Rotifer proportions declined, due mainly to a relative increase in cladocerans; (3) Rotifer diversity increased. The two dominants of the 1980s, Polyarthra spp. in the colder period and Brachionus angularis in the warmer one, reverted after sewage diversion to a more diverse assemblage reminiscent of the 1970s, with a higher number of dominant species. In the summer of 1998, both Brachionus calyciflorus and its predator Asplanchna brightwelli, dominant in 1973, became abundant again. In 1998, an increase in the number of dominant species was also observed during water renewal periods, some of these species were new or seldomly found before in the lagoon (Proalides tentaculatus-digitus, Trichocerca pusilla at the end of rice culture, Brachionus variabilis at the end of winter flooding). Another change that indicates an improvement of water conditions is a more distinct and longer clear water phase, which occurs in the water renewal period at the end of winter and involves a Daphnia magna peak. The increased importance of this phase, promoted the flourishment of Brachionus variabilis, a facultative Daphnia epibiont never found before in the lake.  相似文献

Behavioural Reproductive Isolation in a Rotifer Hybrid Zone   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
A hybrid zone between two Brachionus plicatilis rotifer mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) lineages was recently described in the Iberian Peninsula between a pond (Santed 2) and a lake (Gallocanta). The patterns of mitochondrial and nuclear genetic variation observed suggested that gene flow is mainly male-mediated from the lake to the pond. Here we test two hypotheses: (a) that male-mediated gene flow occurs through assortative mating between individuals from these ponds, (b) that behavioural isolation occurs between the two mtDNA lineages. We isolated, reared and genotyped rotifer clones from resting eggs collected in the sediments of these and two other distant ponds. We devised a quick, inexpensive RFLP method to discriminate between B. plicatilis and its sibling species B. ‘Manjavaeas’ and between both mtDNA B. plicatilis lineages. Behavioural no-choice tests using new-born, virgin males and females were performed between five clones. B. ‘Manjavacas’ and B. plicatilis were reproductively isolated. B. plicatilis clones did not show evidence of reproductive isolation, regardless of their mtDNA lineage, except Santed 2 males, which discriminated strongly against Gallocanta females. These results could help to explain the discrepancies between mitochondrial and nuclear genetic variation reported in the two populations.  相似文献

24 plankton samples, collected in different parts of the Republic of Senegal (W. Africa) were examined for their rotifer content. Seventy taxa were identified to species level, some of which were present in different forms. Thirty three taxa and forms are new to Senegal, three species are new to Africa. Attention is paid to a cruciform population of Asplanchnella sieboldi and to a Brachionus quadridentatus population of very small dimensions. Two new taxa are described: Brachionus cf. angularis and Brachionus bidentatus senegalensis Koste & De Ridder.  相似文献

Background  

Small vagile eukaryotic organisms, which comprise a large proportion of the Earth's biodiversity, have traditionally been thought to lack the extent of population structuring and geographic speciation observed in larger taxa. Here we investigate the patterns of genetic diversity, amongst populations of the salt lake microscopic metazoan Brachionus plicatilis s. s. (sensu stricto) (Rotifera: Monogononta) on a global scale. We examine the phylogenetic relationships of geographic isolates from four continents using a 603 bp fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene to investigate patterns of phylogeographic subdivision in this species. In addition we investigate the relationship between genetic and geographic distances on a global scale to try and reconcile the paradox between the high vagility of this species and the previously reported patterns of restricted gene flow, even over local spatial scales.  相似文献

The present commentary deals with the diversity of rotifers from three different habitats that include a river, lake and an irrigation canal from Manipur, India. Using the samples (n = 288) spanning over a 2-year period the species richness and the abundance of rotifers were assessed. A total of 34 species of rotifers from 11 families were observed with varying relative abundance, with the diversity indices (Shannon–Wiener, H’) ranging between 2.98 and 3.23. The species composition of the three habitats differed considerably, as evident from the multivariate analysis. In the lake habitat, the dominant species was Brachionus calyciflorus (7.9%), while in the irrigation canal the dominant species was Brachionus ruben (10.4%), and for the river habitat the dominant species was B. calyciflorus (11.5%). Using relative abundance of the rotifer species as explanatory variables, the ordination of the 34 species yielded significant differences based on the similarity in the abundance over the sampling period. On the basis of the overall differences in the species composition of rotifers, the three habitats could be segregated significantly (P < 0.05) based on the discriminant function analysis. Although the species composition of rotifers remained similar to other freshwater bodies of the this geographical region, the diversity and community analysis suggested considerable differences with reference to the three habitats, implying significance for limnological management.  相似文献

Clear Lake, Iowa, USA is a shallow, agriculturally eutrophic lake that has changed drastically over the past century. Eight macrophyte surveys since 1896 were pooled and examined to characterize long-term impacts of eutrophication on macrophyte community composition and relative abundance. Surveys in 1981 and 2000 revealed few submergent and floating-leaved species and a dominance in emergent species (Scirpus, Typha). Over the past century, however, species richness has declined from a high of 30 species in 1951 to 12 found today, while the community composition has shifted from submergent-(99%) to emergent-dominated floras (84%). Potamogeton praelongus was the first emergent species to disappear but was followed by several other clear water Potamogeton species. Several floating leaved and emergent genera increased in relative abundance with eutrophication, notably Nuphar, Nymphaea, Phragmites, Polygonum, Sagittaria, Scirpus, and Typha. P. pectinatus was present over the entire century due to its tolerance of eutrophic conditions. Macrophyte growth was generally light-limited, with 93% of the variance in relative abundance of submergent species explained by changes in water transparency. Clear Lake exhibits signs of alternative stable states, oscillating between clear and turbid water, coupled with high and low submerged species relative abundance. The maximum macrophyte richness occurred as the lake oscillated between submergent- and emergent-dominated states. Changes in the water level have also impacted macrophyte growth since the area of the lake occupied by emergent macrophytes was negatively correlated with water level. Strongest correlations indicated that macrophytes respond to water level variations with a 2-year time-lag.  相似文献

Summary Coefficients of interspecific association of three rotifer species (Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus rubens, Asplanchna brightuelli) of 314 plankton samples from about 100 ponds in South Germany were determined: two coefficients basing on present-absent data (Table 2: C 7, C 8), one coefficient regarding population density (Table 2: C 9), and one coefficient of partial interspecific association taking in mind the presence or absence of the third species (Table 3: C p). Some of the computed coefficients are significantly positive or negative indicating that joint appearances are sometimes more and sometimes less frequent than expected by chance. Most of these results cam be interpreted by the knowledge of interspecific relationships, vz. competition between Brachionus calyciflorus and B. rubens, and predator-prey relationships between Asplanchna brightwelli and B. rubens which had been detected in former studies. In each case the association between two of the species is modified by the presence of the third. The causes (alternative prey, destruction of the competitors etc.) are discussed.  相似文献

A four-year study showed a clear seasonal succession of species within the cladoceran community of the large, oligotrophic Sainte-Croix reservoir (S.E. France). Diaphanosoma brachyurum and Ceriodaphnia pulchella were strictly limited to the warm stratified period (July to October), whereas Bosmina longirostris and Bosmina coregoni were dominant during spring and autumn. Daphnia longispina was the only species to occur throughout the year with higher densities in spring.In spring and late autumn, the discharge of the inflowing river Verdon was high and the abundance of all species showed a gradient over the whole lake with lower densities close to the inflow. During the stratified period, water inflow was very low and species showed different patterns. Densities of the small form Ceriodaphnia pulchella were similar all along the long axis of the lake, whereas Daphnia densities were significantly higher near the dam. The distribution pattern of Diaphanosoma, an intermediate-sized species, showed similar trends to that of Daphnia. The only planktivorous fish in the pelagic zone, the bleak (Alburnus alburnus), fed mostly on large-bodied species (> 1.0 mm) and was more abundant close to the inflow current. A comparison between the length frequency distributions of cladocera upstream and downstream provided a clear demonstration of the effects of size-selective predation on prey populations. Finally, the interactions between spatial heterogeneity and long-term development of the zooplankton community and the indirect effects of predation are discussed.  相似文献

Protein, carbohydrate and lipid amounts were determined for several rotifer species collected directly from the field. Brachionus calyciflorus was the most abundant species; therefore making possible more data for it. An increase in protein content of this species occurred when its concentration in food (µg protein/ml) also increased. Keratella tropica showed a similar pattern, but Asplanchna brightwelli did not.Carbohydrate proved to be the main form of storage in rotifers. In Brachionus calyciflorus females bearing no egg, 8% of the total biomass was carbohydrate; in females bearing one egg, 15% carbohydrate was found. Lipid does not appear to be used for storage since no increase in the amount of lipid was detected in females bearing eggs or embryos. This suggests that lipid has a structural function. Finally, a relationship between rotifer body volume and protein content at a given food concentration was obtained. The cladoceran Daphnia magna follows the same pattern.  相似文献

Burbot Lota lota L. is one of the endangered freshwater fish species in western Europe for which the development of controlled larval rearing procedures could produce enough material for stock enhancement. The suitability of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus as a start food for larviculture of burbot was investigated. After yolk‐absorption, the larvae were stocked in 40‐L tanks under different feeding conditions: clear water rearing conditions with rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) for 10 days (R), green water conditions (Chlorella sp.) with rotifers offered for 10 days (MALR), green water conditions (Chlorella sp.) for 3 days followed by clear water in combination with rotifer feeding for 7 days (AL3R), and clear water conditions with Artemia nauplii offered for 10 days (Art). After the 10‐day feeding, all groups received Artemia nauplii up to 35 days post‐hatching. Larval survival was counted at day 10 and at the end of the 35‐day rearing experiment. At day 35, a significant survival difference was noted between the groups where rotifers were supplemented with algae vs only Artemia. At the end of the experiment, the highest survival rate (69.20%) was obtained with larvae receiving only algae in the first 3 days of feeding. Lowest survival rate (24.90%) was obtained with larvae receiving only Artemia for 35 days. This indicates that smaller prey are essential for burbot at first feeding. Larval length and wet weight were measured at the time of mouth opening, at days 7, 10, and 21, and at the end of the experiment (day 35). On day 35, mean length of the larvae varied significantly between the treatments. However, the final wet weight of the larvae did not vary significantly between the treatments.  相似文献

Species composition, abundance, and spatial distribution of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were studied in Lake Ziway from late April to early July 2004. A total of 49 rotifer species was recorded, with Anuraeopsis fissa, Brachionus angularis, Filinia novaezealandiae, and Trichocerca ruttneri being numerically dominant. Variation in abundance was extremely high, ranging from 2 to 1000+ individuals per litre. There was no significant difference in the distribution of rotifer species between inshore and offshore regions. Crustacean species richness was low, with only five cladoceran and three copepod species occurring in the open water. Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma excisum dominated the cladoceran community, whereas Thermocyclops decipiens was the dominant copepod. Although numerically dominant (75%), rotifers accounted for less than 30% of mean total zooplankton biomass. Peak abundance of crustaceans was observed in May and June, following the onset of the rainy season and increased phytoplankton production. Variation in the spatial distribution of crustacean species was neither observed horizontally between inshore and offshore areas nor vertically in the highly turbid and wind exposed deeper part of the lake. On the other hand, Moina micrura varied significantly in size between inshore and offshore areas. Adult M. micrura dominated offshore, whereas juveniles were more abundant inshore, suggesting a predominantly littoral selective predation on large and adult crustaceans by fish. Tolerance to low oxygen concentrations is expected in Brachionus plicatilis, a rotifer adapted to live in saline warm waters. The population dynamics of a clone of this species, isolated from an endorreic saline lake, was studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Although their growth and metabolism is extremely reduced, B. plicatilis populations are able to maintain relatively high-density populations (a mean of 35 ind ml–1) in oxygen concentrations below 1 mg 1–1, for more than one month. 1. We examined 60 clear, stained and glacial lakes in Alaska to quantify the relative importance of climate setting, morphometry, transparency, and lake typology influences on various thermal characteristics including duration of growing season, water temperature, mixing depth (MD) and heat content. We used analysis of variance (ANOVA ) to test for differences in thermal characteristics in association with lake type and employed simple and multiple regression techniques to determine functional relationships between variables. 2. Latitude accounted for 60% of the total variance in length of growing season. Although the date of maximum heat content was consistent among lake types, stained lakes had longer growing seasons compared with clear and glacially turbid lakes. 3. Maximum water temperatures were approximately 3 °C higher in stained lakes and 3 °C lower in glacial lakes compared with clear lakes. Mean water column temperature was significantly lower in glacial lakes (5.9 °C) compared with clear lakes (7.4 °C), but there was no statistical difference between clear and stained lakes (7.2 °C) or between stained and glacial lakes. Maximum surface temperatures were positively related (r2=0.51) to colour (humic stain), but negatively related (r2=0.40) to inorganic turbidity (glacial silt). 4. Only about half of the lakes in our data set underwent summer stratification. None of the glacial lakes developed a distinct thermocline, but stained lakes had shallower MDs (mean 8 m) than clear lakes (mean 12 m). Thus, the MD to total depth ratio for glacial lakes was unity compared with mean values of 0.66 for clear lakes and 0.34 for stained lakes. Fetch explained a significant fraction (51%) of the total variance in MD. Considering all lakes, MD was inversely related to transparency (Secchi depth). In contrast, considering only stratified clear and stained lakes, MD was positively related to Secchi depth (SD), the fraction of the total variance explained was 23%. The sign of the slope was dependent on the mixture of lake types. 5. Despite significant (ANOVA ) differences in water temperatures, growing season, and MDs among the three lake types, there were no statistical differences in the summer heat budget associated with lake type. In addition, heat budgets were poorly correlated with lake area, depth and volume. In contrast, mean water column temperature was strongly and inversely related (r2=0.77) to mean depth. 6. Potential explanations for the similarity in summer heat budget among lake types and weak correlation with morphometry were attributed to different patterns in vertical heat distribution associated with lake typology (colour and turbidity) differences. 7. Multiple linear regression including climatic (latitude and altitude), morphometric, and lake typology (colour and turbidity) factors demonstrated a hierarchical (climate–morphometry–typology) regulation of growing season characteristics, water temperatures, stratification and heat retention. A regional and hierarchical framework for lake thermal characteristics adds to our understanding of potential responses to climatic change and may be important for regional management objectives for fisheries.  相似文献

Tentatively dated, the Plio‐/Pleistocene origin of the ancient Lake Ohrid on the Balkan Peninsula makes it the oldest ancient lake in Europe. Given the surface area of the lake and the adjusted endemicity rate, it may be also defined as the most diverse of all the ancient lakes in the world. From all the animal groups endemic to this lake, gammarids are amongst the most scarcely known in terms of their diversity and phylogenetic relationships. Partial DNA sequences of two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (cox1) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) of eight known endemic Gammarus species from the Lake Ohrid valley were analysed. Phylogenetic analyses showed that endemic Gammarus species comprise an ancient species flock, with Gammarus sketi from the feeder springs being their sister taxon outside the lake. Amongst the species inhabiting the lake, Gammarus solidus and Gammarus salemaai are morphologically and molecularly well defined. By contrast, Gammarus ochridensis, Gammarus parechiniformis, Gammarus lychnidensis, and Gammarus stankokaramani revealed high discrepancy between morphological and genetic data. None of these morphospecies form a monophyletic clade and a significant degree of apparent gene flow occurs between them. This could be caused by incomplete lineage sorting and/or hybridization events. Two novel mtDNA lineages were found within the lake, possibly constituting two new species (Gammarus sp. 1 and Gammarus sp. 2). Molecular clock analysis showed that the split between G. sketi and the Gammarus species flock from the lake occurred approximately 5–7 Mya, whereas within the flock there were at least two intralacustrine radiations: one estimated at 2–3 Mya and the second at less than 1 Mya. Between 1991 and 1993, samples were collected upstream and downstream of the industrial basin and urban centre of Liège. Rotifers and crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were identified and counted. Their population dynamics were related to physical and chemical factors (temperature, oxygen, ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates) and to phytoplankton biomass. The zooplankton was dominated by rotifers; crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were less abundant. There was a succession of groups and species, some thriving in the spring and others in summer or autumn. The dominant rotifer species were Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas, Brachionus angularis Gosse, Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) and Synchaeta spp.; B. calyciflorus and B. angularis are spring species. K. cochlearis was present between May and November. Crustacean biomass was important in summer and autumn, but the faunal spectrum and biomass also varied with sampling location. Low spring and summer discharges allowed the phytoplankton to develop significantly. The zooplankton development followed a similar pattern. During low flow, when plankton populations become established, some declines in phytoplankton could only be explained by sedimentation and grazing pressure by zooplankton. Although these factors provided a good explanation of the longitudinal variation, some local conditions (e.g. oxygen deficit, high level of phosphate) also induced changes (e.g. industrial and municipal waste water discharge).  相似文献

Batch cultures and continuous flow cultures were used to study the growth rates of zooplankton species from Shira lake, the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis Muller and calanoid copepod Arctodiaptomus salinus Daday, which were fed on phytoplankton and bacterioplankton from the lake. Analyses of the birth and survival rates were used to demonstrate that the lake phytoplankton, consisting mostly of cyanobacteria and diatomaceous algae, is inadequotes for optimal realisation of the reproductive potential of B. plicatilis when compared with the bacterial diet. The study revealed that the kinetic growth characteristics of the two zooplankters were similar: B. plicatilis r max, 0.120 d–1; S 0, 0.253; and K s, 0.114 mg dry mass l–1; and for A. salinus r max, 0.129 d–1; S 0, 0.240; and K s, 0.171 mg dry mass l–1. Fluctuations in natural food concentration reduced the growth rate of both species. Even though the threshold concentration of food for B. plicatilis and A. salinus were quite similar, the copepods were less sensitive to food limitation.  相似文献
