Bundy D. A. P. 1981. The surface ultrastructure of the egg capsule of Transversotrema patialense (Transversotrematidae : Digenea). International Journal for Parasitology11: 19–22. Scanning and transmission electron micrographs show that the egg capsule of the digenean Transversotrema patialense bears thread-like extensions 3 μm long and 0.12 μm in diameter at a density of one per μm?2. These extensions trap bacteria and detritus against the egg capsule surface. The ultrastructural topography of the egg capsules of this species differs from the forms previously described for other parasitic platyhelminths. It is suggested that the capsular sculpturing arises as an incidental consequence of moulding effects at the egg capsule-reproductive tract interface during ovogenesis.  相似文献

Egg capsule morphometrics of the ectoparasitic digenean Transversotrema patialense are examined. Capsule width, but not length, shows age-dependency over the ovigerous life span of the fluke at 24°C. Capsule length is normally distributed. A comparison between 7 species of the family Transverso-trematidae indicates that the published data on egg dimensions are inadequate for statistical analyses. Simple methods for strengthening the role of egg capsule dimensions in numerical taxonomy are suggested.  相似文献

Kuris A. M. 1980. Effect of exposure to Echinostoma liei miracidia on growth and survival of young Biomphalaria glabrata snails. International Journal for Parasitology10: 303–308. Exposure to miracidia of Echinostoma liei resulted in increased mortality and reduced growth of 1–2 mm albino Biomphalaria glabrata snails whether or not the snails became infected. Growth rates for infected and exposed but uninfected snails were significantly more variable than growth rates of unexposed snails. Retarded growth and increased mortality were detected as rapidly as seven to nine days after exposure. Neither growth nor survivorship of 4–6 mm snails was altered upon exposure to or infection by E. liei.  相似文献

Rau M. E. 1979. The frequency distribution of Hymenolepis diminuta cysticercoids in natural, sympatric populations of Tenebrio molitor and T. obscurus. International Journal for Parasitology9: 85–87. Natural, sympatric populations of Tenebrio molitor and T. obscurus were examined for cysticercoids of Hymemlepis diminuta. The distribution of cysticeroids in both species and both sexes conformed to the negative binomial. Cysticeroids were more prevalent and the mean intensity of infection was higher in T. obscurus than in T. molitor. No differences in the intensity of infection were detected between the sexes. Larvae of both beetle species were always very lightly infected. The significance of these factors in the transmission of the infection to the rat definitive host is discussed.  相似文献

Parasites may have large effects on host population dynamics, marine fisheries and conservation, but a clear elucidation of their impact is limited by a lack of ecosystem-scale experimental data. We conducted a meta-analysis of replicated manipulative field experiments concerning the influence of parasitism by crustaceans on the marine survival of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). The data include 24 trials in which tagged smolts (totalling 283 347 fish; 1996–2008) were released as paired control and parasiticide-treated groups into 10 areas of Ireland and Norway. All experimental fish were infection-free when released into freshwater, and a proportion of each group was recovered as adult recruits returning to coastal waters 1 or more years later. Treatment had a significant positive effect on survival to recruitment, with an overall effect size (odds ratio) of 1.29 that corresponds to an estimated loss of 39 per cent (95% CI: 18–55%) of adult salmon recruitment. The parasitic crustaceans were probably acquired during early marine migration in areas that host large aquaculture populations of domesticated salmon, which elevate local abundances of ectoparasitic copepods—particularly Lepeophtheirus salmonis. These results provide experimental evidence from a large marine ecosystem that parasites can have large impacts on fish recruitment, fisheries and conservation.  相似文献

The genus Salmincola is an ectoparasitic copepod group commonly infesting the branchial and buccal cavities of salmonids. While negative impacts on hatchery fishes have been reported, their impacts on wild fish populations and distribution patterns are critically understudied. In the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan, we found parasites belonging to this genus on the branchial cavity of a stream salmonid, Southern Asian Dolly Varden Salvelinus curilus. All parasites recovered were identified as Salmincola edwardsii based on morphological characteristics and partial 28S rDNA sequences. Prevalence was highly heterogeneous even among neighboring streams (0–54.8%, < 10 km) with the mean intensity among streams being generally low (2.19 parasites/infeted fish). Despite the low intensity, quantile regression analysis showed negative trends between parasite intensity and host condition, suggesting that the infestation of S. edwardsii has a potential negative impact on the host salmonid. In addition, a single copepod was found from an anadromous fish, which could indicate some salinity tolerance of the copepods. It is important to evaluate the effects of Salmincola spp. on host species and determine the limiting factors on the parasite's distribution for proper management.  相似文献

Daily growth rings were examined in the otoliths of wild juvenile sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka to determine whether infection by ectoparasitic sea lice Caligus clemensi and Lepeophtheirus salmonis was associated with reduced host body growth, an important determinant of survival. Over 98% of the sea lice proved to be C. clemensi and the fish that were highly infected grew more slowly than uninfected individuals. Larger fish also grew faster than smaller fish. Finally, there was evidence of an interaction between body size and infection status, indicating the potential for parasite‐mediated growth divergence.  相似文献

1. Margaritifera hembeli is a threatened mussel limited to twenty-two headwater streams in the Red River drainage in central Louisiana, USA. This study evaluated intraspecific variation in density, growth, size and age structure and shell morphology among several isolated populations. This study also identified the host fish and considered the role that host fish distribution played in determining mussel recruitment. 2. Mussels were aggregated in beds and average densities differed among streams. However, maximum mussel densities in beds were similar in all streams; the observed maxima were among the largest for monospecific mussel beds in North America, often exceeding 300 individuals m–2. 3. The maximum size reached by individuals differed among streams, but all size distributions were skewed towards larger individuals. A repeated measures analysis of tagged mussels in four populations, over a 2-year period, indicated 2-fold differences in growth rates among streams, and significant variation among years. Growth rates were not affected by local population density. Maximum ages reached, determined indirectly by comparing growth rates, varied from 45 to 75 years. A canonical discriminant analysis also revealed significant differences in shell morphology across populations. 4. Half of the populations showed evidence of recent recruitment, and these sites had fish assemblages dominated by the host fish Noturus phaeus (Taylor). Host fish abundance appeared more important than adult mussel density in explaining recruitment patterns. 5. Considerable intraspecific life history variation suggests that management strategies for this species should be stream-specific, with emphasis on ensuring long-term habitat stability.  相似文献

The fungus Haliphthoros milfordensis is a known pathogen of cultured lobster (W. S. Fisher, E. H. Nilson, and R. S. Schleser, 1975, J. Invertebr. Pathol., 26, 41–45) and has been isolated also from gills of the white shrimp (T. P. Tharp and C. E. Bland, 1977, Canad. J. Bot.55, 2936–2944). Because of the potential impact of this fungus on culture of commercially important marine crustacea, a model laboratory system involving Artemia salina has been devised to study aspects of its biology. This report describes light and electron microscope observations of the infection process and the internal relationship between host and parasite. Following encystment of zoospores on the exoskeleton of larvae, infection occurs via germination of the spore and penetration of the exoskeleton and epidermis by vegetative hyphae. Growth of the fungus destroys first fat and body muscles and ultimately the gut. Electron-dense material at the host-parasite interface is likely a response of the shrimp to invading fungal hyphae. Histolytic activity by the fungus is evident by the dissolution of host cytoplasm along the growing hyphal tips. Following utilization of all host tissues, hyphae grow to the exterior and the process of sporulation is initiated.  相似文献

Hopkins C. A. and Barr I. F. 1982. The source of antigen in an adult tapeworm. International Journal for Parasitology12: 327–333. Although a primary infection of Hymenolepis diminuta is not rejected for 9–15 days by a mouse, it has been shown that a primary infection terminated chemically after only 3 days induces as good protection against challenge. This demonstrated that a scolex and 1–2 mm of neck tissue (all that is formed by day 3 post infection) are an adequate source of ‘protective’ antigen. Irradiated (350 Gy) cysticercoids which survive but show little growth immunize as effectively as normal cysticercoids which indicates actively growing neck tissue is not essential and hence the scolex alone is a sufficient source of ‘protective’ antigens. In the rat irradiated cysticercoids were found to establish, double their length over 3–6 days and then slowly shrink, but 14% of the worms were still present 49 days p.i. Although a primary infection of normal worms in a rat markedly depresses growth of a secondary infection administered 7 days after the chemical expulsion of the primary, irradiated scoleces induced no measurable protection. These results are discussed in relation to the source of antigen and the fundamental difference in the protective response of mice (an abnormal host) and rats (a normal host) to the tapeworm H. diminuta in the small intestine.  相似文献

Field studies on the transmission of the human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, in northeast Thailand: population changes of the snail intermediate host. International Journal for Parasitology16: 545–552. A natural population of Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos, snail vector of the human liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini was sampled for 3 years in a shallow reservoir in Khon Kaen Province, northeast Thailand. During the study period, the habitat experienced a 17-month drought followed by a surging flood. Snails suffered over 90% mortality during drying of the reservoir but died at an average rate of only 5% per month during aestivation. When water returned they migrated to new edge habitats, apparently on floating debris, and reproduced. Peaks in reproduction occurred following spring rains and after the fall monsoon flooding subsided. Normally, two generations are produced per year in seasonal habitats. The prevalence of O. viverrini infection averaged 0.11 % in adult snails over 8 mm in length; smaller snails were not infected.Control of opisthorchiasis through snail control does not appear practical because of the widespread distribution of the snails, their ability to survive in very unstable habitats, and for other reasons concerned with the existence of the fish host between snail and human hosts.  相似文献

The discovery of Transversotrema patialense cercariae in an aquarium harboring tropical fish triggered the present study. The purpose was to estimate the potential range of infection of local freshwater and fishpond populations by T. patialense. Experimental infection of T. patialense differed among 3 species employed: 76.5% for Tilapia zillii, 37.8% for Gambusia affinis, and none for 2 varieties of Cyprinus carpio. These patterns of infectivity are different from those published previously for T. patialense infections, and they may be attributed to the origin of the fish (temperate water vs. tropical and subtropical waters) and the size of their scales. In G. affinis, but not in the other species, worm load and fish length were closely related, and the left side harbored heavier worm burdens than the right side. Taken together, these results suggest that imported T. patialense may spread to various indigenous natural and cultured fish populations, with ensuing potential harm to these populations.  相似文献

The adult monorchiid, Postmonorcheides maclovini Szidat, 1950, digenean parasite of the Patagonian blennie Eleginops maclovinus (Cuvier) (Eleginopidae) from Puerto Deseado (47° 45′ S, 65° 55′ W), Argentina, was characterized and its life cycle elucidated. P. maclovinus is the only species of the genus Postmonorcheides, proposed by Szidat (1950) from Tierra del Fuego province (~ 54° S), Argentina. This digenean uses the Patagonian blennie as definitive host, and the intertidal bivalve Lasaea adansoni (Gmelin) (Lasaeidae) as both first and second intermediate hosts (metacercariae encyst inside sporocysts), being the first record of this clam as intermediate host of trematode parasites. The cercaria may, in addition to encysting in the sporocyst, emerge and presumably infect other intermediate hosts. This is the second report of a monorchiid species with metacercariae encysting inside the sporocyst. Adults were found parasitizing the fish stomach, pyloric caeca and intestine with a prevalence of 100%; sporocysts with cercariae and/or metacercariae were found parasitizing the gonad of the bivalve with a prevalence of 2.78%. The cercariae possess a well-developed tail and eye-spots are absent. The ITS1 sequence from the adult digeneans found in the Patagonian blennie, identified as P. maclovini, was found to be identical to the ITS1 sequences obtained both from sporocysts containing cercariae and encysted metacercariae found in L. adansoni.  相似文献

Little attention has been paid to the potential top-down effects of population ecology on metabolism. Because it is capable of a fast growth that dramatically modifies its blood environment, the parasitic protozoan, Trypanosoma evansi, is a promising model for the study of density-dependent metabolic processes. We assess the in vivo growth rate, doubling time, biomass yield, glycolytic flux, and enzyme expression of T. evansi. Then, we explore the metabolic changes likely occurring during its growth. At low T. evansi densities, most host glucose is used to produce energy, which results in the release of pyruvate. Part of glucose is used for NADPH production through the pentose phosphate pathway. At high T. evansi densities, fructose, mannose, and glycerol become additional energy sources. Part of host glucose is used for biosynthesis and for NADPH production through alternative metabolic pathways, which results in the release of succinate, alanine, and acetate. The ability of organisms to adjust to resource changes is crucial to their survival. Irrespective if the triggering mechanism is direct (nutrient limitation) or indirect (a pheromone-like factor), nutrient availability is necessarily the main evolutionary factor responsible for the density-dependent metabolic properties of trypanosome populations.  相似文献

Llewellyn J. and Simmons J. E. 1984. The attachment of the monogenean parasite Callorhynchicola multitesticulatus to the gills of its holocephalan host Callorhynchus milii. International Journal for Parasitology14: 191–196. C. multitesticulatus when juvenile (up to about 10 mm long) attaches itself by four pairs of clamps to the secondary gill lamellae of its host the elephant fish Callorhynchus milii. However, in adult parasites the haptor invades the host tissue and the stalk connecting the haptor with the body-proper becomes surrounded by a sleeve of fibrous host inflammatory reaction tissue. The stalk is provided with annuli with anteriorly-directed flanges which are pressed into the walls of the sleeve of host tissue when the diameter of the stalk increases as a result of the contraction of well-developed sub-tegumentary longitudinal muscles.  相似文献

Summary Density-dependent effects in Elaphostrongylus rangiferi, a parasitic nematode in the CNS and muscular system of reindeer, were studied in a laboratory population of the snail intermediate host, Arianta arbustorum. The rates in parasite growth, development and mortality were all affected by parasite density. The effects on growth and development were, however, much more marked, than the effect on mortality. All density-dependent rates were intensified by decreasing snail size, and by snail starvation. The snail host showed marked tissue reactions against infection, and the intensity of these reactions increased with increasing parasite density. The mechanism behind the observed density-dependent rates is discussed, and is tentatively concluded to be competition for nutritive substances in the host tissue. The importance of a density-dependent developmental rate in natural populations of this parasite is discussed, and it is hypothesized that this effect may counteract the strong temperature-dependent developmental rate of E. rangiferi In a more general context it is pointed out that density-dependent developmental rates, although common amongst animal populations, has been neglected in models of population dynamics. Developmental rates are usually represented by a constant time lag in such models, but should be treated as a density-dependent variable.  相似文献

Generalist parasites have the capacity to infect multiple hosts. The temporal pattern of host specificity by generalist parasites is rarely studied, but is critical to understanding what variables underpin infection and thereby the impact of parasites on host species and the way they impose selection on hosts. Here, the temporal dynamics of infection of four species of freshwater mussel by European bitterling fish (Rhodeus amarus) was investigated over three spawning seasons. Bitterling lay their eggs in the gills of freshwater mussels, which suffer reduced growth, oxygen stress, gill damage and elevated mortality as a result of parasitism. The temporal pattern of infection of mussels by European bitterling in multiple populations was examined. Using a Bernoulli Generalized Additive Mixed Model with Bayesian inference it was demonstrated that one mussel species, Unio pictorum, was exploited over the entire bitterling spawning season. As the season progressed, bitterling showed a preference for other mussel species, which were inferior hosts. Temporal changes in host use reflected elevated density-dependent mortality in preferred hosts that were already infected. Plasticity in host specificity by bitterling conformed with the predictions of the host selection hypothesis. The relationship between bitterling and their host mussels differs qualitatively from that of avian brood parasites.  相似文献

Beveridge I. &; Rickard M. D. 1976. The development of the rostellar hooks of Taenia pisiformis. International Journal for Parasitology6: 55–59. Growth and development of the rostellar hooks of Taenia pisiformis were examined in experimentally infected rabbits. Hook differentiation and the sizes of various parts of the hook were related to the age of cysticerci, the ability of cysticerci to resist the effects of digestive enzymes in vitro and their ability to infect dogs. Hook growth was completed 56 DAI though cysticerci were capable of evaginating in vitro 35 DAI and of infecting dogs 42 DAI. When 42-day old cysticerci were fed to dogs, no further hook growth occurred.  相似文献

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor is an invasive species of Western honey bees (Apis mellifera) and the largest pathogenic threat to their health world-wide. Its successful invasion and expansion is related to its ability to exploit the worker brood for reproduction, which results in an exponential population growth rate in the new host. With invasion of the mite, wild honeybee populations have been nearly eradicated from Europe and North America, and the survival of managed honeybee populations relies on mite population control treatments. However, there are a few documented honeybee populations surviving extended periods without control treatments due to adapted host traits that directly impact Varroa mite fitness. The aim of this study was to investigate if Varroa mite reproductive success was affected by traits of adult bee behaviours or by traits of the worker brood, in three mite-resistant honey bee populations from Sweden, France and Norway. The mite’s reproductive success was measured and compared in broods that were either exposed to, or excluded from, adult bee access. Mite-resistant bee populations were also compared with a local mite-susceptible population, as a control group. Our results show that mite reproductive success rates and mite fecundity in the three mite-resistant populations were significantly different from the control population, with the French and Swedish populations having significantly lower reproductive rates than the Norwegian population. When comparing mite reproduction in exposed or excluded brood treatments, no differences were observed, regardless of population. This result clearly demonstrates that Varroa mite reproductive success can be suppressed by traits of the brood, independent of adult worker bees.  相似文献

Acceleration of the growth of tetrathyridial populations of Mesocestoides corti (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) by splenectomy. International Journal for Parasitology4, 165–168. Experiments with LDF1 hybrid mice showed that splenectomy 7 days prior to infection, increases the total biomass of tetrathyridial populations of Mesocestoides corti in hosts of both sexes. This increase is accompanied by a decrease in the size of individuals, and by an increase in the percentage of two-suckered and acephalic forms. Splenectomy thus accelerates both the growth of the biomass of populations and the asexual multiplication of the tetrathyridia.  相似文献
