It ought to be easy to exchange digital micrographs and other computer data files with a colleague even on another continent. In practice, this often is not the case. The advantages and disadvantages of various methods that are available for exchanging data files between computers are discussed. When possible, data should be transferred through computer networking. When data are to be exchanged locally between computers with similar operating systems, the use of a local area network is recommended. For computers in commercial or academic environments that have dissimilar operating systems or are more widely spaced, the use of FTPs is recommended. Failing this, posting the data on a website and transferring by hypertext transfer protocol is suggested. If peer to peer exchange between computers in domestic environments is needed, the use of Messenger services such as Microsoft Messenger or Yahoo Messenger is the method of choice. When it is not possible to transfer the data files over the internet, single use, writable CD ROMs are the best media for transferring data. If for some reason this is not possible, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, 100 MB ZIP disks and USB flash media are potentially useful media for exchanging data files.  相似文献

Failing to open computer files that describe image data is not the most frustrating experience that the user of a computer can suffer, but it is high on list of possible aggravations. To ameliorate this, the structure of uncompressed image data files is described here. The various ways in which information that describes a picture can be recorded are related, and a primary distinction between raster or bitmap based and vector or object based image data files is drawn. Bitmap based image data files are the more useful of the two formats for recording complicated images such as digital light micrographs, whereas object based files are better for recording illustrations and cartoons. Computer software for opening a very large variety of different formats of digital image data is recommended, and if these fail, ways are described for opening bitmap based digital image data files whose format is unknown.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Customization of an inexpensive microcomputer and peripherals to produce hard copy outputs of electrophysiological data is described. The system uses any of the Apple II series computers and a common A/D+D/A card together with a digital plotter. For the 1–2 s recordings normally used in studies of insect chemoreception, this computer configuration can replace more laborious permanent hard copy production techniques. Additional analytical programs can easily use the three data files produced by the current sytem.  相似文献

Software for calculation of 6 diatom indices and diversity indices has been created for both Macintosh and IBM compatible computers. This software runs with the data base Omnis 5 under Windows 3.0. It includes three taxonomic files: families, genera and species, and an inventories file. Four types of data inputs are possible. It is always possible to operate simulations and to carry out investigations with simple or combined characters. All files and results of investigations can be listed in different ways. This data base is compatible with both word processing and spreadsheet systems.  相似文献

The single factor limiting the harnessing of the enormous computing power of clusters for parallel computing is the lack of appropriate software. Present cluster operating systems are not built to support parallel computing – they do not provide services to manage parallelism. The cluster operating environments that are used to assist the execution of parallel applications do not provide support for both Message Passing (MP) or Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) paradigms. They are only offered as separate components implemented at the user level as library and independent servers. Due to poor operating systems users must deal with computers of a cluster rather than to see this cluster as a single powerful computer. A Single System Image of the cluster is not offered to users. There is a need for an operating system for clusters. We claim and demonstrate that it is possible to develop a cluster operating system that is able to efficiently manage parallelism, support Message Passing and DSM and offer the Single System Image. In order to substantiate the claim the first version of a cluster operating system, called GENESIS, that manages parallelism and offers the Single System Image has been developed.  相似文献

Enhancing the resilience of corals to rising temperatures is now a matter of urgency, leading to growing efforts to explore the use of heat tolerant symbiont species to improve their thermal resilience. The notion that adaptive traits can be retained by transferring the symbionts alone, however, challenges the holobiont concept, a fundamental paradigm in coral research. Holobiont traits are products of a specific community (holobiont) and all its co‐evolutionary and local adaptations, which might limit the retention or transference of holobiont traits by exchanging only one partner. Here we evaluate how interchanging partners affect the short‐ and long‐term performance of holobionts under heat stress using clonal lineages of the cnidarian model system Aiptasia (host and Symbiodiniaceae strains) originating from distinct thermal environments. Our results show that holobionts from more thermally variable environments have higher plasticity to heat stress, but this resilience could not be transferred to other host genotypes through the exchange of symbionts. Importantly, our findings highlight the role of the host in determining holobiont productivity in response to thermal stress and indicate that local adaptations of holobionts will likely limit the efficacy of interchanging unfamiliar compartments to enhance thermal tolerance.  相似文献

Longitudinal exchange experiments facilitate the quantification of the rates of interconversion between the exchanging species, along with their longitudinal relaxation rates, by analyzing the time-dependence of direct correlation and exchange cross peaks. Here we present a simple and robust alternative to this strategy, which is based on the combination of two complementary experiments, one with and one without resolving exchange cross peaks. We show that by combining the two data sets systematic errors that are caused by differential line-broadening of the exchanging species are avoided and reliable quantification of kinetic and relaxation parameters in the presence of additional conformational exchange on the ms-μs time scale is possible. The strategy is applied to a bistable DNA oligomer that displays different line-broadening in the two exchanging species.  相似文献

A number of different types of computers running a variety of operating systems are presently used for the collection and analysis of image cytometry data. In order to facilitate the development of sharable data analysis programs, to allow for the transport of image cytometry data from one installation to another, and to provide a uniform and controlled means for including textual information in data files, this document describes a data storage format that is proposed as a standard for use in image cytometry. In this standard, data from an image measurement are stored in a minimum of two files. One file is written in ASCII to include information about the way the image data are written and optionally, information about the sample, experiment, equipment, etc. The image data are written separately into a binary file. This standard is proposed with the intention that it will be used internationally for the storage and handling of biomedical image cytometry data. The method of data storage described in this paper is similar to those methods published in American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Report Number 10 and in ACR-NEMA Standards Publication Number 300-1985.  相似文献

The Internet is a global network of computers with a broad variety of services and options. Electronic mail (email) is the most frequently used service. For a plastic surgeon, this mode is the fastest and the most cost-effective way of transferring data of any kind. The critical aim of this study was to assess the transfer of confidential data by means of e-mail and to present general conditions for the use of e-mail. Therefore, experiences with this means of communication are described to point to the possibilities, but also to indicate problems and weak points of this medium. Some rules should be obeyed for the transfer of confidential patient data by means of e-mail to satisfy the demand for data-security standards. Also, medicolegal aspects must be considered. These recommendations or rules and aspects will be discussed to offer a guideline to plastic surgeons for their e-mail applications.  相似文献

A mathematical formalism is presented for use with digital computers to permit the routine fitting of data to physical and mathematical models. Given a set of data, the mathematical equations describing a model, initial conditions for an experiment, and initial estimates for the values of model parameters, the computer program automatically proceeds to obtain a least squares fit of the data by an iterative adjustment of the values of the parameters. When the experimental measures are linear combinations of functions, the linear coefficients for a least squares fit may also be calculated. The values of both the parameters of the model and the coefficients for the sum of functions may be unknown independent variables, unknown dependent variables, or known constants. In the case of dependence, only linear dependencies are provided for in routine use. The computer program includes a number of subroutines, each one of which performs a special task. This permits flexibility in choosing various types of solutions and procedures. One subroutine, for example, handles linear differential equations, another, special non-linear functions, etc. The use of analytic or numerical solutions of equations is possible.  相似文献

An algorithm is presented for the calculation of metal ion concentrations from given total metal concentrations (and vice versa) in physiological media containing metal-chelating compounds. In such media, conditions differ from those used for stability constant determination of metal-chelator equilibria; therefore calculated metal ion concentrations are incorrect. We recompute stability constants to reflect the effects of ionic strength and temperature of physiological solutions. Twelve different equilibria can be considered per metal-chelator pair. The computer program also calculates the contribution of ionized species of metals, chelator, complexes and pH buffers to ionic strength. Measurements with a Ca-selective electrode and with fura-2 show that calculated ionic Ca2+ concentrations are correct from 10 nM up to the millimolar range. The importance of the correct calculation of metal ion concentrations in physiological experiments is demonstrated by data, and derived kinetic parameters, on Na+/Ca2+ exchange and the ATP-dependent Ca2+ pump of enterocyte plasma membrane vesicles. The program is written in Turbo Pascal and will run on IBM-compatible computers. It is menu-driven and supports the use of a Microsoft mouse.  相似文献

GEPASI is a software system for modelling chemical and biochemicalreaction networks on computers running Microsoft Windows. Forany system of up to 45 metabolites and 45 reactions, each withany user-defined or one of 35 predefined rate equations, onecan produce trajectories of the metabolite concentrations andobtain a steady state (if it does exist). When steady-statesolutions are produced, elasticity and control coefficients,as defined in metabolic control analysis, are calculated. GEPASIalso allows the automatic generation of a sequence of simulationswith different combinations of parameter values, effectivelyscanning a hyper-solid in parameter space. Together with theability to produce user-defined columnar data files, these featuresallow for both very quick and systematic study of biochemicalpathway models. The source code (in C) is available on requestfrom the author, and while the user interface is dependent onhaving MS-Windows as the operating system, the numerical partis portable to other operating systems. GEPASI is suitable bothfor research and educational purposes. Although GEPASI was writtenwith biochemical pathways in mind, it can equally be used tosimulate other dynamical systems.  相似文献

Using a computerized phylogenetic analysis of the Isopoda (Crustacea: Peracarida) as source of typical errors and misunderstandings, problems that may occur in computer cladistics are reviewed. It is concluded that in addition to the errors that are possible in a conventional Hennigian analysis some specific methodological problems exist in computer cladistics. It is recommended that the OTU be replaced by the groundpattern concept. Tree statistics are not useful for comparing different competing hypotheses. Arguments ought to concentrate on the hypo-thetico-deductive steps of the analysis, i.e. on character analysis. The use of computers does not add objectivity to character analysis. Single outgroup taxa should not be used in assessing the character states of ingroups. Concerning isopod phylogeny, it is argued here that the tail fan of the Isopoda can probably be derived from the eumalacostracan groundpattern and did not evolve de novo within the Isopoda.  相似文献

Simulating protein folding thermodynamics starting purely from a protein sequence is a grand challenge of computational biology. Here, we present an algorithm to calculate a canonical distribution from molecular dynamics simulation of protein folding. This algorithm is based on the replica exchange method where the kinetic trapping problem is overcome by exchanging noninteracting replicas simulated at different temperatures. Our algorithm uses multiplexed-replicas with a number of independent molecular dynamics runs at each temperature. Exchanges of configurations between these multiplexed-replicas are also tried, rendering the algorithm applicable to large-scale distributed computing (i.e., highly heterogeneous parallel computers with processors having different computational power). We demonstrate the enhanced sampling of this algorithm by simulating the folding thermodynamics of a 23 amino acid miniprotein. We show that better convergence is achieved compared to constant temperature molecular dynamics simulation, with an efficient scaling to large number of computer processors. Indeed, this enhanced sampling results in (to our knowledge) the first example of a replica exchange algorithm that samples a folded structure starting from a completely unfolded state.  相似文献

HAMOG is a computer graphics program written in C for personal computers. Clear menus and a contextsensitive help option make the program easy to operate for occasional users. HAMOG provides a flexible environment for displaying and manipulating molecules and molecular systems. Special functions allow the investigation of structure-activity relationships of biologically active molecules. These include the calculation of molecular electrostatic potentials and fields, the superposition of molecules and the calculation of steric accessibilities. The visualization and manipulation of protein structures immediately readable from the Brookhaven Protein Data Bank files are also possible using HAMOG. The construction of any peptide or protein structure is very simple.  相似文献

1. A method for transferring data from liquid-scintillation counters to automatic punched-card read-out is described. 2. A method of calibration of an external standard is presented that supplies sufficient information for the correction of quenched data by computer. 3. A computer programme in FORTRAN IV is described that calculates the data from one isotope, or two isotopes counted simultaneously, and that incorporates features for examining the reproducibility of the input data. 4. With the methods described, quench correction of samples containing either (3)H or (14)C was accurate until samples were quenched 70%. When the two isotopes were both present in one sample and counted simultaneously, the correction was accurate until the samples were quenched 60%. When quenching was greater than either 70 or 60% respectively, its correction was still possible but with slightly diminished accuracy and with greater variability.  相似文献

This article proposes specific areas of computing competence and illustrates how these skills can be acquired as an integral part of the curriculum of medical genetics. Geneticists are at the forefront in the use of computers for medical care, because of the driving force of the Human Genome Project. Computer searching of international data bases is the most efficient method to keep current with the explosion in molecular genetics data and with its immediate relevance to clinical care. The use of computers in genetics education could go far beyond the use of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) to show how to use computer systems to assist with clinical decisions. The proposed basic computer skills can be obtained using genetics software. The six proposed skills include the use of (1) microcomputers, (2) productivity software, (3) CAI, patient simulations and specific application programs, (4) remote computers, (5) data bases and knowledge bases, and (6) computers to improve the clinical care of patients.  相似文献

The development of electronic computers has made it possible to transfer to them a number of the "intellectual" functions of man. At present such machines are being employed to model broader and broader regions of man's psychological activity. One of the most important problems in this connection is the building of "perceptive machines," such as reading machines, "the printing phonograph" and so forth. Perceptive machines are a necessary element in the development of automatic equipment to operate in complicated environments.  相似文献
