In 12- to 13-year-old children, inhabitants of regions of Ukraine with high levels of industrial contamination, we found higher contents of lead and calcium, as compared with the upper limits of the norm, in samples of biologically stable tissues (hairs). Concentrations of strontium were within the limits of reference values. Correlation analysis of the EEG frequency components vs levels of the above-mentioned metals demonstrated the existence of significant (or close to significant) relations between normalized spectral powers of the rhythms of background EEG recorded at different functional states (eyes open/closed, solving an arithmetic task) and concentrations of these elements. According to the number of the correlations found and their strength, the order of significance of the effects of the above elements with respect to the pattern of EEG activity was the following: Ca > Sr > Pb. The intensity of significant correlations varied from mild to moderately strong (0.41 < r < 0.70). The tightest correlations with the levels of all elements were observed under conditions of cognitive loading (solving an arithmetic task). High-frequency EEG components (β1 and β2 rhythms) were found to be the EEG components most sensitive to the contents of the mentioned elements.  相似文献

During the past decade, spectral analysis has become indispensable instrument for different kinds of EEG processing. With the development of dedicated computer system, investigation of shifts in human EEG rhythm under various conditions has improved considerably. However, it is difficult to make general conclusions from this line of research, since a large number of studies are carried out using the ambiguous experimental approaches and different methods. Present paper aims to evaluate a modern state of the art in the field of human EEG rhythmical structure investigation. The results from recent relevant articles are briefly reviewed according to the universal scheme (EEG rhythm--experimental condition--observed effect). Due to such presentation, the obtained results have been summarized and some tendencies of modern investigations have been revealed. The extension of studied frequency range of rhythmical EEG components to both high (> 35 Hz) and low (< 1 Hz) frequencies, the shift to a more detailed spectral structure analysis simultaneously with ignoring the fixed boundaries of traditional EEG rhythms, the growing attempts to reveal EEG rhythmical structure correlates of cognitive activity, and a wide utilization of dynamic approaches for the analysis of brain electrical activity are discussed in some detail. The observed data are indicate of high functional significance and perspectives of human EEG rhythmical structure investigation.  相似文献

The functional characteristics of the frequency components ofalpharhythm was studied in schizophrenic patients. The frequency components of the alpha-range EEG were elicited by spectral analysis with FFT-transform. In 80% cases of the patients, the power spectra EEG have multimodal distribution in alpha-range. Spectral analysis from the left and right occipital leads have revealed multimodality in spectral EEG in 20 out of 25 patients. The hyperventilation test in the patients revealed a decreased multimodality and increased unimodality.  相似文献

In a group of 80 adults of both sexes, we studied the correlation between the characteristics of aggressiveness of the individual (diagnosed using the Buss-Durkee questionnaire) and parameters of the frequency components (rhythms) of EEG recorded in the resting state from leads C3 and C4 according to the 10–20 system. Despite the natural high interindividual variability, the higher spectral powers of nearly all EEG frequency components (δ-, θ-, α-, and β rhythms) and coefficient of reactivity of the α rhythm corresponded in general to lower indices on the scales of the Buss-Durkee questionnaire and smaller values of the index of aggressiveness and index of hostility. These correlations probably reflect a significant dependence of both characteristics of aggressiveness of personality and amplitude parameters of the EEG rhythms on hereditary factors. Both these aspects of the neurodynamic constitution of the individual are to a significant extent determined by the specificity of organization and functioning of a few neurotransmitter (in particular, aminergic) and neurohumoral systems. ObjectiveThe aim was to use a new method to analyze the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the multi-kinetics neural mass model. We hope that this new method can be as an auxiliary judgment tool for the diagnosis of brain diseases and the identification of brain activity states.MethodsWe apply the Lorenz plot to analyze the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from the multi-kinetics neural mass models. The standard deviations in two orthogonal directions of the Lorenz plot are further used to quantify the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of EEG signals.ResultsThe results show that the normalized signal frequency power spectrum may not be able to distinguish normal EEG signals and epileptiform spikes, but the Lorenz plot can distinguish the normal EEG signals and epileptiform spikes effectively. For EEG signals with multi-rhythms, the Lorenz plot of all the simulated signals are oval, but the value of SD1/SD2 increases monotonically when the multi-rhythm EEG signals change from low frequency to high frequency.ConclusionThe Lorenz plot of EEG signals with different rhythms presents different distribution. It is an effective nonlinear analysis method for EEG signals.  相似文献

We studied correlations between the frequency of background impulse activity (BIA) of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons of the ventral tegmentum (VT) and spectral power (SP) of the frequency components of EEG samples recorded in awake cats. The EEG was recorded monopolarly (electrodes were fixed in the cranial bones) from the frontal, occipital, and right and left temporal regions of the cortex. In a great majority of the cases, the BIA frequency of VT DA-ergic neurons demonstrated significant positive correlations with changes in the SPs of the alpha and beta EEG rhythms. The closest correlations of the spiking frequency of DA-ergic cells with the SP of the alpha rhythm was observed in the occipital region, while those with the beta SP were found in the frontal area. Correlations of the activity of DA-ergic neurons with the SPs of the alpha and beta rhythms in the left temporal cortical zone were closer, as compared with those in the symmetrical right zone. Correlations of the SPs of the delta, theta, and gamma EEG components with the discharge frequency of VT DA neurons were of opposite directions, and in most cases such correlations did not reach the level of significance. The results of this study show that, in some cases, specific EEG patterns can be considered indicators of the state of the cerebral VT DA-ergic system. In a group including 65 adults of both sexes, we examined correlations of the internal/external personality type (locus of psychological control diagnosed by the Rotter questionnaire) with parameters of the EEG frequency components (rhythms). Multichannel recording of ongoing EEG was carried out in the resting state; leads were located according to the 10-20 system. Despite natural high interindividual variability, the subgroup of internals was, in general, characterized by higher spectral powers (SPs) of the δ, θ, α, and β1 rhythms and a lower SPs of β2 and γ oscillations recorded in the resting state with the eyes closed. In internals, the modal frequencies of practically all EEG ranges were, on average, somewhat lower. In this subgroup, reaction of EEG activation related to opening of the eyes was stronger, while the interhemisphere asymmetry was weaker.  相似文献

In a group of 70 adult subjects of both sexes, we estimated the levels of the need for achievement and its motivation (interpreted as generalized characteristics of the state of the motivational sphere of a personality and diagnosed using questionnaires of Orlov and Mehrabian) and examined the correlations of these estimates with spectral powers (SPs) of the frequency components (rhythms) of the current background EEG (С3 and С4 leads according to the 10–20 system). Despite the fact that naturally high interindividual variability exists, high estimates of the need for achievement correlated with medium values of the SPs of most EEG frequency components (δ, θ, α, and β1 rhythms), low SPs of the β2 and γ rhythms, and higher values of the coefficient of reactivity (CR) of the α rhythm. A high level of the need for achievement corresponded to higher SPs of the θ and γ rhythms and high CR of the α rhythm, a medium SP of this EEG component, and lower SPs of the δ and β rhythms. The coefficient of interhemisphere asymmetry of the α rhythm was the highest at low values of the studied psychological indices. Interrelations that we found in our study can be explained as follows: both the characteristics of the need for achievement and motivation typical of a certain personality and the amplitude parameters of the EEG rhythms observed in this individual depend significantly on genetically determined factors (in particular, on neurochemical ones). These peculiarities of neurodynamic constitution of the individual are, to a considerable extent, due to the specificity of organization and functioning of a few neurotransmitter (aminergic, in particular) and neurohumoral systems. To explore the effects of manual acupuncture (MA) on brain activities, we design an experiment that acupuncture at acupoint ST36 of right leg with four different frequencies to obtain electroencephalograph (EEG) signals. Many studies have demonstrated that the complexity of EEG can reflect the states of brain function, so we propose to adopt order recurrence quantification analysis combined with discrete wavelet transform, to analyze the dynamical characteristics of different EEG rhythms under acupuncture, further to explore the effects of MA on the complexity of brain activities from multi-scale point of view. By analyzing the complexity of five EEG rhythms, it is found that the complexity of delta rhythm during acupuncture is lower than before acupuncture, and for alpha rhythm that is higher, but for beta, theta and gamma rhythms there are no obvious changes. All of those effects are especially obvious during acupuncture with frequency of 200 times/min. Furthermore, the determinism extracted from delta, alpha and gamma rhythms can be regarded as a characteristic parameter to distinguish the state acupuncture at 200 times/min and the state before acupuncture. These results can provide a theoretical support for selecting appropriate acupuncture frequency for patients in clinical, and the proposed methods have the potential of exploring the effects of acupuncture on brain activities.  相似文献

We studied changes in the power spectra of EEG in the course of sessions of feedback by EEG characteristics (neurofeedback sessions) and estimated the effects of neurofeedback on psychological and EEG correlates of voluntary attention. Indices of the latter were estimated using Bourdon’s test (a correcture test) and Schulte’s tables. Twenty-nine reasonably healthy 10-to 13-year-old children took part in the study; they were divided into two groups, an experimental group (n = 12) and a control group (n = 15). The results obtained support the statement on noticeable changes in the functional state of the brain both immediately in the course of a neurofeedback session and after a course of such trainings. Changes in the ratios of the spectral powers of the beta1 vs theta rhythms and the low-frequency beta vs theta rhythms were found in EEG recorded from the sensorimotor zone of the right hemisphere (C4). The observed changes in the spectral characteristics of EEG induced by the course of neurofeedback sessions were accompanied by the improvement of a few indices of voluntary attention. We studied changes in the frequency pattern of EEG related to a single session of biological feedback by the EEG characteristics (neurofeedback, NFB) directed toward an increase in the ratio of α/θ spectral powers (SPs) (an experimental group; 30 subjects) and to a session of the supposedly indifferent acoustic influence (listening to a musical background; 30 persons). A standard technique of EEG recording was used; the loudness of white noise overlapping the musical background served as an NFB signal. EEG was recorded from the C3 and C4 leads. Within the examined experimental group, an NFB session elicited a trend toward statistically insignificant decreases in the SPs of δ, α, and β rhythms and increases in the SPs of θ and γ EEG components. Listening to a supposedly neutral musical background by the control group, with no attempts at self-control of the SPs of EEG rhythms, was followed by rather clear unidirectional (partially significant) decreases in the SPs of θ, α, β, and γ components; the δ activity in the left hemisphere decreased, while in the right hemisphere it increased. In general, results of the single NFB session were characterized by a high interindividual variability, which can be related mostly to the specificities of psychophysiological characteristics of the personality of the tested subject. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was used for 19-channel resting EEG analysis 111 patients at early stages of depressive disorder and 526 age-matched healthy subjects. Comparison of independent components power spectra in depressed patients and healthy subjects in two states: Eyes closed and Eyes open, has revealed significant differences between groups for three frequency bands: Theta (4-7.5 Hz), Alpha (7.5-14 Hz), and Beta (14-20 Hz). Increased power of alpha and theta activity in depressed patients at parietal and occipital sites may be caused by decreased cortical activation of these regions. Diffuse enhancement of beta activity level can correlate with anxiety symptoms which take an important place in clinical picture of depressive disorder at early stages. Using of ICA method for comparison of spectral characteristics of EEG in groups of patients with different brain pathology and healthy subjects gives a possibility to localize more precisely the discovered differences as compare to traditional analysis of EEG spectra.  相似文献

The EEG effects of intake of the mean therapeutic single dose of cholinomimetic amiridin (20 mg) or cholinolytic amizyl (2 mg) were studied in 7 healthy subjects. After the intake of the drugs with agonistic and antagonistic action, significant opposite changes in the EEG spectral density were observed in the frequency ranges of 0.6-6.7, 7.7-11.4, and 24.8-29.7 Hz. Amizyl produced an enhancement of the spectral density of the delta-, theta- and beta 2 activity and reduction of the alpha-rhythm power, while under the action of amiridin the spectral density of these rhythms changed in opposite directions. The oppositely directed changes in the alpha range were most pronounced. The peak frequency of amiridin-induced shift was equal to 9.8-10 Hz, and the same value of the spectral change induced by amizyl was 10.8-11.4 Hz. It is suggested that the spectral power density of the alpha-rhythm is an EEG index of the level of cholinergic activation.  相似文献

We studied characteristics of the EEG activity and psychophysiological indices in healthy persons and patients with opiate addiction (in the states of abstinence and remission) before and after peroral introduction of 200 mg sulpiride. In the initial state, spectral characteristics of EEG in patients with opiate addiction differed from those in the control (in healthy tested subjects) by higher relative powers of low- and high-frequency components (delta and beta waves) and a considerable depression of the alpha rhythm. Treatment with sulpiride evoked changes in the spectral characteristics of EEG, which showed a significant intergroup specificity; intensification of alpha oscillations was a general effect in all groups. We conclude that the effects of sulpiride on the EEG activity comprised components typical of both neuroleptics and antidepressants; in the group of patients in the abstinence state, the pattern of effects of sulpiride was close in its profile to the effect of anxiolytics. Dynamics of the indices of psychophysiological testing after sulpiride treatment demonstrated that the drug exerts mostly positive regulating effects on the state of higher nervous functions in patients with opiate addiction.  相似文献

The functional interrelationships of the brain structures of freely moving cats in generation of rhythmic EEG activity during the states of drowsiness and light sleep were evaluated using the claster analysis of mean values indexes of rhythms in different structures as well as correlation coefficients between them in time. It was shown that according these parameters visual cortical areas and lateral geniculate body appeared in different clusters. Lateral geniculate body suggested not to be the only pacemaker of EEG rhythms in visual cortex. The wide convergence of subcortical inputs to the visual cortex and possibility of autonomic generation of EEG rhythms at the cortical level are discussed as putative mechanisms of dissociation of EEG activities in visual cortex and thalamus.  相似文献

In a group including 72 adults of both sexes, we studied correlations between the estimates of the so-called coronary-prone personality type (type A) diagnosed using the Jenkins questionnaire and the spectral powers (SPs) of the frequency components (rhythms) of background EEGs recorded in the resting state (leads C3 and C4 according to the 10-20 system). Despite natural high interindividual variability, estimates that characterized the subject as belonging to the behavioral type A corresponded, on average, to relatively low SPs of the δ, θ, and α EEG components, intermediate values of the β1 rhythm SP and coefficient of reactivity of the α rhythm, and higher SPs of the high-frequency (β2 and γ) rhythms. Estimates characterizing type B personality corresponded to significantly higher δ-rhythm SPs, intermediate SPs of the θ and α rhythms, and smaller SPs of the β and γ rhythms. The interhemisphere asymmetry coefficient for the α rhythm was usually negative in type-A individuals and positive in the cases of types B and AB. The peculiarities observed are probably determined, to a certain extent, by the fact that both the characteristics of the behavioral types of the personality and the amplitude parameters of EEG rhythms depend significantly on inherited (in particular neurochemical) factors. Such peculiarities of the neurodynamic constitution of the individual are determined, to a considerable extent, by the specificity of organization and functioning of a few neurotransmitter (in particular aminergic) and neurohumoral systems.  相似文献

Nonlinear dynamic properties were analyzed on the EEG and filtered rhythms recorded from healthy subjects and epileptic patients with complex partial seizures. Estimates of correlation dimensions of control EEG, interictal EEG and ictal EEG were calculated. The values were demonstrated on topograms. The delta (0.5–4 Hz), theta (4–8 Hz), alpha (8–13 Hz), beta (13–30 Hz) and gamma (30–40 Hz) components were obtained and considered as signals from the cortex. Corresponding surrogate data was produced. Firstly, the influence of sampling parameters on the calculation was tested. The dimension estimates of the signals from the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital regions were computed and compared with the results of surrogate data. In the control subjects, the estimates between the EEG and surrogate data did not differ (P > 0.05). The interictal EEG from the frontal region and occipital region, as well as its theta component from the frontal region, and temporal region, showed obviously low dimensions (P < 0.01). The ictal EEG exhibited significantly low-dimension estimates across the scalp. All filtered rhythms from the temporal region yielded lower results than those of the surrogate data (P < 0.01). The dimension estimates of the EEG and filtered components markedly changed when the neurological state varied. For each neurological state, the dimension estimates were not uniform among the EEG and frequency components. The signal with a different frequency range and in a different neurological state showed a different dimension estimate. Furthermore, the theta and alpha components demonstrated the same estimates not only within each neurological state, but also among the different states. These results indicate that the theta and alpha components may be caused by similar dynamic processes. We conclude that the brain function underlying the ictal EEG has a simple mechanism. Several heterogeneous dynamic systems play important roles in the generation of EEG. Received: 10 December 1999 / Accepted in revised form: 8 May 2000  相似文献

Olfactory testing was performed in two groups of young men aged 18–22 years with and without sexual experience. Multichannel EEG was recorded at rest and upon the presentation of 45 natural body odors of young women in different phases of the menstrual cycle. The odors were either intact or mixed with J’Adore L’Absolu perfume (Christian Dior) with or without a female pheromone. Changes in spectral power within narrow frequency ranges in response to olfactory stimulation were estimated by multivariate analysis of variance. It was found that background electrical activity of the brain in young men with regular sex life had lower spectral power in all frequency ranges. The EEG responses to the intact olfactory stimuli in all young men were associated with a decrease in spectral power in the majority of the frequency ranges and especially in the θ2 and high- and low-frequency α rhythms. Presentation of female odors masked with a perfume resulted in bidirectional EEG responses; i.e., the spectral power in the θ1 and β1 ranges increased or decreased depending on the sexual experience of men and the menstrual cycle phase of a female donor as compared with an intact odor. The comparison of the EEG responses to intact or perfume-masked odors showed that individual odor remains dominant.  相似文献

The pecularities of EEG changes in the rats with geneticaly different level of anxiety was studed after ethanol injection. The biopotentials spatial synchronization and entropy in the "high anxious" rats (strain MR) did not increase under low dose; on the contrary the above changes were characteristic for the rats without anxiety signs (strain MNRA). After injection of middle and high ethanol doses the "high anxious" rats as compared with "low anxious" ones had the "simplification" of reaction type--the increase of narrow frequency coherence (i.e. linear biopotentials relationship) and spectral power of theta-activity (5.75-7.25 Hz), which was combined with the decrease of nonlinear biopotential characteristics. This fact is interpreted as the predominance of subcortical mechanisms of the brain functional state regulation over cortical ones. The significant decrease of high frequency EEG components in "high anxious" rats takes place under more high ethanol doses, presumably reflecting the increase of the anxiolytic level of ethanol effect.  相似文献

Dramatic changes in neocortical electroencephalogram (EEG) rhythms are associated with the sleep–waking cycle in mammals. Although amphibians are thought to lack a neocortical homologue, changes in rest–activity states occur in these species. In the present study, EEG signals were recorded from the surface of the cerebral hemispheres and midbrain on both sides of the brain in an anuran species, Babina daunchina, using electrodes contacting the meninges in order to measure changes in mean EEG power across behavioral states. Functionally relevant frequency bands were identified using factor analysis. The results indicate that: (1) EEG power was concentrated in four frequency bands during the awake or active state and in three frequency bands during rest; (2) EEG bands in frogs differed substantially from humans, especially in the fast frequency band; (3) bursts similar to mammalian sleep spindles, which occur in non-rapid eye movement mammalian sleep, were observed when frogs were at rest suggesting sleep spindle-like EEG activity appeared prior to the evolution of mammals.  相似文献
