In this paper, we demonstrate that two characteristic properties of mammalian brains emerge when scaling-up modular, cortical structures. Firstly, the glia-to-neuron ratio is not constant across brains of different sizes: large mammalian brains have more glia per neuron than smaller brains. Our analyses suggest that if one assumes that glia number is proportional to wiring, a particular quantitative relationship emerges between brain size and glia-to-neuron ratio that fits the empirical data. Secondly, many authors have reported that the number of neurons underlying one mm2 of mammalian cortex is remarkably constant, across both areas and species. Here, we will show that such a constancy emerges when enlarging modular, cortical brain structures. Our analyses thus corroborate recent studies on the mammalian brain as a scalable architecture, providing a possible mechanism to explain some of the principles, constancies and rules that hold across brains of different size.  相似文献

We have studied in vitro the morphology of two populations of dopaminergic neurons from mouse embryos: the periglomerular interneurons from the olfactory bulb (DOBI) and the efferent neurons from the substantia nigra (DENN). The intrinsic potential of both neuronal types has been studied by comparing process outgrowth in a predominantly neuronal environment or in a glial environment that is endogenous or from other brain regions. Both populations exhibit in vitro different characteristics that reflect their phenotype in situ. In addition they greatly differ in their response to glial signals. DOBI maintain a constant stellate morphology with short processes under all culture conditions tested, whereas DENN exhibit a great plasticity and in particular respond to olfactory bulb glia with a striking increase in neurite length. The olfactory bulb glia differs from other brain region glia in two aspects: (a) in addition to type I astrocytes, common to all the glial monolayers that we have studied, it contains a population of fusiform astrocytes (GFAP+) that might represent the superficial glia (Raisman, 1985); and (b) both astrocytes and fusiform cells produce large amounts of laminin that is secreted in a thick extracellular matrix. DENN outgrowth on olfactory bulb glia, however, is not blocked by antilaminin antibodies that block outgrowth on a laminin substrate. Our results demonstrate that two neuronal populations sharing the same neurotransmitter present intrinsic differences in the control of cell shape. The fact that glia harvested from different brain regions supports varying extent of DENN neurite outgrowth suggests a heterogeneity of environmental signals throughout the developing brain.  相似文献

The authors summarized the EEG findings and defined the nature of intercentral EEG relationships in different functional states of healthy subjects and patients with organic cerebral pathology based on coherence analysis. The EEG features typical of healthy subjects were identified: an anterior-posterior gradient of the mean coherence and the character of cortical-subcortical relationships in the anterior cerebral structures. Right- and lefthanded subjects showed the frequency and regional differences in EEG coherence, which reflected, mainly, specific intracortical relationships. Development and regression of pathologic signs in right- and lefthanded patients with organic brain lesions are thought to be determined by these differences. As distinct from cortical pathology, lesions of regulatory structures (diencephalic, brainstem, and limbic) were shown to produce more diffuse changes in intercentral relationships with a tendency to reciprocity. Intercentral relations, including their interhemispheric differences, varied with changes in the functional state of healthy subjects (increase and decrease in the level of functioning). A certain time course of changes in intercentral relationships was also revealed in patients with organic brain lesions during recovery of their consciousness and mental activity. Changes in the dominance of activity of individual regulatory structures are considered to be one of the most important factors that determine the dynamic character of EEG coherence.  相似文献

Abstract

The role of Saccharomyces cerevisiae flavohemoglobin (Yhb1) is controversial and far from understood. This study compares the effects of nitrosative and oxidative challenge on the yeast mutant lacking the YHB1 gene. Growth of the mutant was impaired by nitrosoglutathione and peroxynitrite, whereas increased sensitivity to reactive oxygen species was not observed. Increased levels of intracellular NO? after incubation with NO? donors were found in the mutants cells as compared to the wild-type cells. Deletion of the YHB1 gene was found to augment the reduction of Fe3+ by yeast cells which suggests that flavohemoglobin participates in regulation of the activity of plasma membrane ferric reductase(s).  相似文献

Summary The fine structure of the neural sheath, glial cells and nerve cells in the brain of adult male houseflies is described. The neural sheath is composed of neural lamella and perineurium. The neural lamella consists of an external lamina and collagen-like fibrils which are embedded in an amorphous matrix. The perineurial cells form a continuous layer around the brain. On their inner surface, perineurial cells form junctional complexes with glial cell processes. A cortical cellular layer composed of neurons and glial cells surrounds the centrally located neuropil. Three types of glial cells are identified. Glial cells differ in size and in relative development and distribution of organelles. Thin processes of glioplasm completely surround the cell bodies of the neurons. Five types of neurons are described. The arachidonic acid (AA) cascade involves the release of AA from the membrane phospholipids by a phospholipase A(2), followed by its subsequent metabolism to bioactive prostanoids by cyclooxygenases coupled with terminal synthases. Altered brain AA metabolism has been implicated in neurological, neurodegenerative, and psychiatric disorders. The development of genetically altered mice lacking specific enzymes of the AA cascade has helped to elucidate the individual roles of these enzymes in brain physiology and pathology. The roles of AA and its metabolites in brain physiology, with a particular emphasis on the phospholipase A(2)/cyclooxygenases pathway, are summarized, and the specific phenotypes of genetically altered mice relevant to brain physiology and neurotoxic models are discussed.  相似文献

The work is aimed at the study of correlations between the measures of spectral power and cortical interactions of EEG rhythms in healthy subjects and schizophrenic patients ("acute" and chronic cases). All brain rhythms in healthy subjects appeared to be symmetrical and synchronous both in phase and frequency. In "acute" schizophrenics, opposite to healthy subjects, the distribution of cortical activity is asymmetrical, and in the chronic cases, the spectral power of most cortical rhythms is decreased as compared to healthy subjects. In the "acute" patients, interhemispheric connections are absent in all rhythms but alpha. In the chronic patients, the number of cortical connections is slightly higher than in the acute patients; and they are located in the posterior areas in the gamma rhythm. These neurophysiological aberrations evidently underlie the multiple mental activity disorders in schizophrenic patients. Thus, the correspondence between the brain rhythms and their synchronization is a necessary condition for normal perception, emotions and cognition evidently influencing behavior and consciousness.  相似文献

We have isolated mammalian neural crest cells using a monoclonal antibody to the low affinity NGF receptor, and established conditions for the serial propagation of these cells in clonal culture to assess their developmental potential. This analysis indicates that, first, single mammalian neural crest cells are multipotent, able to generate at least neurons and Schwann cells like their avian counterparts. Second, multipotent neural crest cells generate multipotent progeny, indicating that they are capable of self-renewal and therefore are stem cells. Third, multipotent neural crest cells also generate some clonal progeny that form only neurons or glia, suggesting the production of committed neuroblasts and glioblasts. Manipulation of the substrate alters the fate of the multipotent cells. These findings have implications for models of neural crest development in vivo, and establish a system for studying the generation of cellular diversity by a multipotent stem cell in vitro.  相似文献

A systemic approach to the pulmonary lobule in health and disease is attempted. There are emphasized the lobule definition, structure and functions (respiratory, metabolic, defensive), the program of lobular structures, their relation ways, their capacity of growth and regeneration, all contributing to the relative independence and autonomy of pulmonary lobules and to their behaviour as wholes. Taking into account the characters of pulmonary lobules in health, their pathological involvement is analysed on human and experimental materials, pointing out the importance of the aerogenic component of pathogenesis in determining the first phases of lung diseases, and of the true pulmonary characters of lesions, in comparison with those induced by the parenteral penetration of agents.  相似文献
