Summary The angioarchitecture of the hypophysial portal system of the White-crowned Sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, was investigated by electron microscopy in conjunction with light microscopy of serial thick sections.The small arteries or arterioles supplying the primary capillary plexus of the median eminence have the typical form of arterioles.The vessels of the primary capillary plexus, on the surface of the median eminence, with their many fenestrations and pinocytotic vesicles, are typical of the form of capillary usually found in other endocrine organs.The portal vessels in the pars tuberalis have wide perivascular spaces between the basement membrane of the endothelium and that of parenchymal lobules of the pars tuberalis. These perivascular spaces are occupied usually by the perivascular cells, but sometimes contain erythrocytes.The endothelial cells of the portal vessels often protrude into vascular lumen giving the appearance of valve-like structures. These may have a role in the regulation of blood flow.The endothelial cells of the portal vessels are invested by a definitive basement membrane and by the cytoplasm of pericytes which are oriented spirally to the longitudinal axes of the vessels. The fine structure of the parvocellular tuberal nuclei and that of the ependyma bordering the third ventricle in the basal hypothalamus of the White-crowned Sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, have been investigated. Photoperiodically stimulated birds have been compared with birds held on short days. The perikarya of the neurons of the basal infundibular (tuberal) nucleus, and in part, of the more dorsal layers, contain dense-cored granules (1000-1500 A). The granules in the anterior part of the nucleus are somewhat larger than those of the posterior part. The synapses and the synaptic relationships of these cells are described. The single-layered ependyma of the third ventricle in the basal hypothalamus may be divided into the dorsal typical ependyma, the ventrolateral "glandular" ependyma, and the ventral "glandular" ependyma. Cells of the ventral ependyma lack apical cilia but bear a few microvillous processes. They have well-developed Golgi apparatus, conspicuous polysomes, and frequently dense, irregularly-shaped granules. Basal cytoplasmic processes extend ventrally to the outer surface of the median eminence. Photoperiodic stimulation appears to increase the numbers of apical protrusions of the cells in the ventral glandular ependyma and to cause an increase in size of the nerve cells of the basal infundibular nucleus.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Der Verlauf der Sehbahn und die Lokalisation der optischen Zentren wurden bei Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii (nordamerikanischer Ammernfink) nach einseitiger Augenexstirpation mit den Techniken von Nauta-Fink-Heimer, Bodian und Bielschowsky erforscht. Die Untersuchungen erstreckten sich über einen Zeitraum von 3 bis zu 120 Tagen nach der Operation. Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii besitzt ein für Vögel typisches visuelles System. Die Hauptmasse der Optikusfasern endet im Stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale des Tectum opticum. Weitere zentrale Endgebiete sind: Nucleus geniculatus lateralis, Nucleus lateralis anterior, Nucleus superficialis synencephali, Nucleus externus, tectales Grau und Nucleus ectomamillaris als Kern der basalen optischen Wurzel. Alle Fasern werden im Chiasma opticum total gekreuzt, auch der Tractus isthmo-opticus, ein efferentes Bündel, dessen Ursprung im Nucleus isthmo-opticus zu finden ist. Dieses efferente Fasersystem läßt sich im Stumpf des durchtrennten N. opticus noch 120 Tage nach der Operation gut versilbern. Eine direkte Verbindung von Retina und Hypothalamus war lichtmikroskopisch nicht nachweisbar. Neurosekretorisch aktive Zellen des Hypothalamus können zwar einen engen räumlichen Kontakt mit den optischen Fasern haben, Synapsen sind aber an diesen Stellen nicht zu erkennen. Es werden passagere Opticusfasern beschrieben, die auf dem Weg zum Nucleus lateralis anterior und Nucleus superficialis synencephali den Hypothalamus durchsetzen.
Neurohistological and experimental studies of the visual system in Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii
Summary The course of the optic pathways and the positions of the optic centers have been investigated with unilaterally enucleated white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, using the techniques of Nauta-Fink-Heimer, Bodian, and Bielachowsky. The investigation involved birds examined 3–120 days after enucleation. The white-crowned sparrow has a typically avian visual system. The major bundles of optic fibers terminate in the stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale of the tectum opticum. Further terminal areas are the nucleus geniculatus lateralis, nucleus lateralis anterior, nucleus superficialis synencephali, nucleus externus, the tectal gray, and the nucleus ectomamillaris of the basal optic root. There is a complete crossing of all fibers in the chiasma, including those of the tractus isthmo-opticus, an efferent bundle with its origin in the nucleus isthmo-opticus. This efferent fiber system can be well impregnated in the stump of the sectioned optic nerve up to 120 days after the operation. No direct connection between the retina and hypothalamus could be demonstrated by light microscopy. Hypothalamic neurosecretory cells can occur in close contact with optic fibers but no synapses have been recognized. Some optic fibers pass through the hypothalamus enroute to the nucleus lateralis anterior and the nucleus superficialis synencephali.

Summary We have demonstrated a bundle of fibers, immunoreactive to an antiserum against gonadoliberin (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone), that projects into the pineal stalk of photostimulated male Z. l. gambelii, a photoperiodic passerine species. These fibers have their origin in the dorsal division of the column of gonadoliberin-positive perikarya that extends caudodorsally from the ventromedial preoptic area to the level of the anterior commissure. After entering the habenula these fibers can be traced into the pineal stalk. This bundle is of interest because it apparently has not previously been reported in birds, and further, because the pineal body of this species is not known to have a role in the photoperiodic induction of increased rates of release of gonadotropins. Relationships of this bundle to other components of the gonadoliberin system are described briefly.  相似文献

Summary The structure of the pineal organ of Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii, as revealed by light- and electron-microscopy, resembles that of Passer domesticus (Oksche and Kirschstein, 1969; Ueck, 1970). The typical cellular element is the pinealocyte with certain basic structural features of the pineal photoreceptors of lower vertebrates (see Oksche, 1971). However, instead of the characteristic, cone-like outer segments, there are, as in other species of birds, only bulbous cilia with ectopic whorls of lamellae. This structure of the outer segment is, in a sense, contrary to the demonstration of synaptoid contacts, numerous unmyelinated, and occasional myelinated nerve fibers by electron microscopy. In Nissl preparations it was possible to demonstrate typical nerve cells. The pinealocytes of Z. l. gambelii are secretory; their Golgi complex forms granulated vesicles (800–1,400 Å in diameter) that belong to the group of granular inclusions characteristic of monoamines. Autonomie nerve fibers course within the connective tissue capsule of the pineal organ. In many pinealocytes of Z. l. gambelii, the granular endoplasmic reticulum contains extensively expanded cisternae that are filled with a flocculent material and closely associated with bundles of filaments. In a number of cases such loop-like structures are selectively stainable with aldehyde fuchsin. It was not possible to demonstrate specific secretory activity in the supporting cells. Extirpation of the pineal organ in Z. l. gambelii had no definitely detectable influence on the photoperiodic control of testicular growth.Aves, Passeriformes, Fringillidae.Supported by grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft to Professor Oksche and by the National Science Foundation (GB 11905) to Professor Farner. We investigated the intraspecific variation in basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total evaporative water loss (TEWL) in the omnivorous passerine Zonotrichia capensis from two populations inhabiting regions with different precipitation regimes and aridity indices. Values of TEWL in birds from the semi-arid region were significantly lower than those found in sparrows from the mesic region. TEWL in birds from the semi-arid site was 74% of the expectation based on body mass for passerines from mesic areas and similar to the allometric expectation for passerines from arid environments. In sparrows from the mesic area, TEWL was higher than predicted by their body mass for passerines from arid environments (133%), but very close (97%) to the expectation for passerines from mesic areas. BMR values were 25% lower in sparrows from the semi-arid region. The lower TEWL and BMR of birds from the semi-arid region may be a physiological adjustment that allows them to cope with fewer resources and/or water. We propose that the lower endogenous heat production in birds from the semi-arid environment may decrease their water requirements.  相似文献

Summary The lamellate cells of amphioxus have round nuclei, and cytoplasm with many mitochondria and a large amount of glycogen. Each of these cells projects a highly modified, branched cilium into the central canal, where it characteristically forms lamellar structures. Primary branches and secondary lamellae often contain accessory microtubules that are not derived from the axonema. The functional and evolutionary significance of this cell type is discussed in relation to the ciliary photoreceptors found in other chordates.This work is dedicated to Professor A. Summary The differentiation of the secretory cavities of Ginkgo stem and the structural organization of the epithelial cells were followed by light and electron microscopy. The mode of formation of the cavities is schizo-lysigeneous. Functional complexes of leucoplasts and associated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes are assumed to be the site of synthesis and translocation of the lipophilic secretory product. Most of the endoplasmic reticulum membranes are paired. The content of the cavities was directly collected and analysed by low- and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The cavities contain anacardic acids and cardanols, which are long-chain phenol lipids not characteristic of Ginkgo. The relationship between the plastid/ER complexes and the production of these secondary metabolites is discussed.  相似文献

Summary In the pineal organ of the lovebird, Uroloncha domestica, bulbous, cup-shaped and elongated outer segments of photoreceptor-like pinealocytes are demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy. These scarce outer segments, 4–11 m in length, extend into the pineal lumen. The present structural observations speak in favor of photosensitive pinealocytes in the pineal organ of Uroloncha domestica. The relation of the photoreceptor-like pinealocytes to acetylcholinesterase-positive nerve cells and a nervous connection between the pineal and the brain indicate that the pineal organ of this passeriform species may be the site of neuroendocrine and photoreceptive functions.Supported by a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science to M. Summary Ultrastructural aspects of the natural degeneration of a group of six motor neurons in the fourth abdominal ganglion of Manduca sexta are described. These motor neurons innervate intersegmental muscles that degenerate and disappear immediately after adult eclosion. The first detectable changes in the cell bodies appear 12 h after eclosion and include disruption of the endoplasmic reticulum and an increase in the size and number of lamellar bodies. At 32 h the nuclear membranes rupture, and the membranous and granular cytoorganelles segregate in different parts of the cell. At that stage the surrounding glial cells participate in the digestion of material from the degenerating neurons. From 72 h onward the remaining neuronal structures become disrupted, and are finally transformed into a single, large lamellar body (residual body) within the glial profile. The degeneration pattern differs significantly from that of embryonic vertebrate neurons.  相似文献

Summary The structure of the two integumental layers comprising the carapace of female D. magna was examined at several points through the molt cycle. The epicuticle and procuticle are simple in organisation; pore canals are absent but intracuticular fibres are present, forming complexes with invaginations of the epidermal plasma membrane similar to such complexes described in the literature for other arthropods. The epidermis consists almost entirely of cuticle-secreting cells. Secretion of the new cuticle begins when 50–67% of the instar has elapsed by which time the epidermal cells have increased in height and their nuclei have become more rounded. However, other presumed secretory phenomena observed viz. the formation of dense core vesicles by Golgi bodies, and the occurrence of these and coated vesicles near the apical plasma membrane are not restricted to any particular period during the molt cycle. This suggests that the mechanisms of cuticle secretion do not undergo marked changes in activity as they do in decapods; presumably this relative continuity is related to the much shorter molt cycle of cladocerans.The technical assistance of G.A. Summary The structure of granular amoebocytes of the intertidal sea anemoneActinia fragacea (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) has been investigated using the electron microscope. Cells from the gonads of large, intact individuals were studied in most detail, but other regions of the anemone were also examined. The amoebocytes are cells of variable appearance which are widely distributed both in the mesogloea and in the epithelial cell layers. They contain numbers of characteristic dense granules, which may enclose spherical cores of greater or lesser electron density. They also contain rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and a range of inclusions, some of which may have lysosomal origins. They may contain extensive deposits of glycogen, and usually smaller quantities of lipid droplets. They may take on a variety of forms, depending partly on their location within the various types of mesogloea and epithelia. The amoebocytes appear to be motile and phagocytic, and may also be involved in the storage and transport of glycogen. They are involved with gametogenesis, both during the development of the oocytes and spermatogenic cysts and during the resorption of degenerating gametes. Their possible role in the secretion or maintenance of the mesogloea remains uncertain. No evidence of amoebocytes differentiating into other cell types was obtained.  相似文献

Summary Tissues from the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the ceca of Gambel's quail and domestic fowl were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Cellular and subcellular structures, including epithelial cell height, mitochondrial volume fraction, microvillous surface area, proportion of goblet cells, and junctional complex characteristics, were quantified by a variety of stereologic procedures and other measurement techniques. The mucosal surface of quail cecum shows a much more highly developed pattern of villous ridges and flat areas than that of fowl cecum. The fowl has significantly greater cell heights than the quail in all cecal regions. The mitochondrial volume fraction does not differ significantly with species or region, but mitochondria are concentrated on the apical side of the nucleus. In both species, the proximal cecal region has the greatest microvillous surface area. All 3 components of junctional complexes, including zonula occludens, zonula adhaerens, and macula adhaerens, are quantified. When all factors are considered, the quail cecum appears to have morphological characteristics consistent with a greater potential capacity for absorption than the fowl cecum.  相似文献

Summary Tarsal glands are located in the 6th tarsomere of adult honeybee queens, workers and drones. Their structural features are not cast or sex specific. The glandular epithelium is lined by a thin endocuticular layer. A cuticular pocket is formed from a postimaginal delamination of the cuticle secreted by the glandular epithelium. The apical plasma membrane of the glandular cells shows numerous cristae and microvilli lining large crypts that communicate with the subcuticular space. Pinocytotic vesicles, multivesicular bodies and residual dense bodies are present in the apical part of the glandular cells. The RER is well developed in perinuclear and basal parts of the glandular cells, but the Golgi apparatus is a discrete organelle without secretory granules. No exocytotic secretory structures were observed. To reach the glandular pocket, the non-proteinaceous secretory product must pass across the subcuticular space, the cuticular intima, the space between the intima and the cuticular wall, and the cuticular wall of the glandular pocket.  相似文献

We present the first study of the warbler family Acrocephalidae based on one mitochondrial and three nuclear DNA loci, in total 2900 bp, including most or all of the species in three (Acrocephalus, Hippolais and Chloropeta) of the four genera and one species in the fourth genus (Nesillas) in this family. All three genera were suggested to be non-monophyletic, although the non-monophyly of Acrocephalus is not fully convincingly demonstrated. Six major clades were found, which agreed largely with the results from two earlier mitochondrial studies, and for which the names Hippolais, Iduna, Acrocephalus, Calamocichla, Notiocichla and Calamodus have been used. However, the results also revealed some new constellations, due to better resolution of deeper nodes and the inclusion of more taxa. The taxonomic implications are discussed.  相似文献

The distribution of VIP-like perikarya and fibers was determined throughout the chick brain. The most rostral immunoreactive perikarya were found to be cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons in the pars medialis of the lateral septal organ. Additional data were presented supporting the idea that the lateral septal organ is another circumventricular organ within the brain of birds (Kuenzel and van Tienhoven 1982). A large group of immunoreactive perikarya was found in the lateral hypothalamic area and appeared continuous with immunoreactive neurons in the anterior medial and ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei (n). A few perikarya were located in the paraventricular hypothalamic n. A number of immunoreactive neurons were found within and about the infundibular and inferior hypothalamic n., none however was immunoreactive cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons. Immunoreactive perikarya were found predominantly in laminae 10–11 of the stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale. A few scattered perikarya were found ventromedial to the n. tegmenti pedunculo-pontinus pars compacta and locus ceruleus. Some of the immunoreactivity was unusual, being very homogeneous within the cell body with little evidence of the material in the axon or dendrites. Perikarya were found in the central gray, n. intercollicularis, and area ventralis of Tsai. The most caudal structure showing immunoreactive neurons was the n. reticularis paragigantocellularis lateralis. Brain areas containing the most abundant immunoreactive fibers, listed from the rostral-most location, were found in the ventromedial region of the lobus parolfactorius and the lateral septal n. Continuing caudally, there were immunoreactive fibers within the periventricular hypothalamic n.; some of the fibers were found to travel for some distance parallel to the third ventricle. Dense immunoreactive fibers were found in the tractus cortico-habenularis et cortico-septalis, medial habenular n. and posterior and dorsal n. of the archistriatum. A number of areas had what appeared to be baskets of immunoreactive fibers (perhaps immunoreactive terminals) surrounding non-reactive perikarya. Brain areas containing terminals included the piriform cortex, area ventralis of Tsai, interpeduncular n., and specific regions of the stratum griseum et fibrosum superficiale. A very dense immunoreactivity occurred within the external zone of the median eminence, the dorsolateral parabrachial n., and n. tractus solitarii. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide appears to be a useful peptide for defining the neuroanatomical constituents of the visceral forebrain in birds.  相似文献
